Marinduque is a heart-shaped island province in the Mimaropa region that nestles between Tayabas Bay and the Sibuyan Sea. It is situated at the heart of the Philippines and is considered the archipelago’s geographic center. During the Lenten season, the island gets a bit crowded for the annual Moriones Festival, one of the oldest religious festivals in the Philippines .

Malbog Sulfur Spring is a natural hot spring at the foot of a volcano known as Mount Malindig. It is a stratovolcano in the Buenavista town with an elevation of 1,157 meters above sea level.

Malbog Sulfur Spring nestles within lush greenery surrounded by verdant flora and fauna. Its warm and bluish-white sulfuric water is believed to have therapeutic and healing benefits. The spring has two swimming pools, and both have medicinal properties that can cure skin diseases. 

The stream directly comes from the mountain and goes down into a spring pool where tourists can have a rejuvenating dip. Its water is safe to drink and is even believed to cure acute and chronic cases of skin ailments. Some tourists even bring bottles of sulfuric water on their way home.

Off the northeastern coast of Marinduque is Mongpong Island, a charming islet with striking rock formations and a pristine white-sand beach. It has clear blue waters where you can see through colorful reef fishes underwater.

Upon arrival on the island, the Ungab Rock Formation is the first thing that will pique your interest. The huge colossal rock sits on the island’s turquoise waters and white sand. Carved out of the base rock is a triangular hole that forms a land bridge connecting you to the other side of the beach.  

The giant boulder is a sight to behold and a perfect backdrop for your selfies and group photos. Plus, the water underneath the rock arch is shallow, making it a safe spot to swim for kids. The white sand is also a mixture of smooth pebbles and coral fragments.

8. Paadjao falls 

While Marinduque is famous for its scenic beaches, there is one enchanting waterfall that stands out from the rest of the Mogpog Marinduque tourist spots, the Paadjao Falls. Situated in Mogpog municipality, the Paadjao Falls is accessible via a 10-minute trek from the highway, which is only 5.5KM away.

The hidden cascade gently flows from a 15-feet tall rocky cliff down to a 6-feet deep basin with cold and jade-green waters. It majestically nestles underneath the cool shade of verdant greenery and tall trees, making you feel a lot closer to nature. Surrounding the falls are huge and edgy rocks, so be extra careful when crossing the river and falls.

Paadjao Falls is connected to the Mogpog River downstream. It is also an ideal picnic spot where guests can put up tents for camping. Aside from Paadjao Falls, there are other underrated waterfalls in Marinduque such as Norada Falls, Kawa Kawa Falls, and Bulusukan Falls.

7. Marinduque Wildlife Sanctuary

Up next is a piece of greenery that occupies nearly 9,000 hectares of land, the Marinduque Wildlife Sanctuary. It is home to several bird species such as the Zebra Dove, Serpent Eagle, Brahminy Kite, and Philippine Scops Owl. Adding to the lush green landscape are native trees such as Ipil, Narra, Yakal, and Molave.

Inside the wildlife sanctuary are caves that serve as a habitat for rare species, like the cave-dwelling freshwater shrimp. Some wild animals inhabiting the protected land are the Philippine warty pig, the Philippine deer, the cloud rat, and the green racket tail. 

The Marinduque Wildlife Sanctuary was declared as a protected land area in 2004 under Presidential Proclamation No. 696 . Its forest watershed encompasses the municipalities of Boac, Gasan, Buenavista, Torrijos and Sta. Cruz. The Marinduque Wildlife Sanctuary is a must-visit hiking, camping, and bird-watching spot for nature lovers and adventurous travelers.

6. Boac Cathedral

Built as a fortress in 1792, the Boac Cathedral became a relevant part of the Marinduqueños colorful history and culture since its construction in the Spanish era. The locals used it as a hiding place during a Moro attack in the 1800s. Consequently, it also served as the venue of the blessing of the Philippine Revolutionary flag in 1899.

Upon entering the church, you will see beautifully carved doors and exterior walls that are made of red bricks. Inspired by Hispanic Gothic architecture, the cathedral’s interior and ceiling showcase simple yet intricate carvings. Because of its cultural and historical significance, it is considered one of the must-see Boac Marinduque spots.

The cathedral’s grand facade and bell tower are composed of adobe stones and rough terra cotta. There are also massive buttresses that resemble the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Paoay Church in Ilocos. 

Another postcard-worthy spot in Marinduque, the Treys Reyes Islands, is nestled off the coast of Gasan municipality. The jump-off point is at Gasan port where tour boats await passengers before heading to the neighboring Three Kings islets, namely Melchor, Gaspar, and Baltazar.

The largest among the three is Gaspar Island, a tranquil paradise with crystal clear waters and fine white sand. Next is Melchor Island, featuring rock formations covered in lush vegetation. Among the must-see spots on Baltazar Island is a hilltop lighthouse, which was built during the American colonial period in 1910. Before capping off your island escapade, don’t forget to see the unique rock formations at Kulapnit Cave. Then, drop by the Kay Bungo Cave, a historical site where elongated skulls were found. 

Majestically standing on an elevation of 1,157 meters above sea level, Mount Malindig is a must-visit Buenavista Marinduque tourist spot and is considered the highest peak in the province. It is a stratovolcano situated at the island’s southern tip and west side of the Bondoc Peninsula on Luzon Island.

Because of its vast landscape and thriving ecosystem, Mount Malindig is comparable to Mt. Banahaw and Mt. Makiling in Quezon and Laguna provinces of Southern Luzon. At the base of Mount Malindig lies a therapeutic sulfuric spring called the Malbog Sulfur Spring. Many locals and tourists flock here to experience the healing powers of the spring.

Mount Malindig is a hike-friendly destination for mountaineers. Based on the Pinoy Mountaineer rating system, it has a difficulty level of 4, which requires a minor climb. Having a trail classification level 1 and 2, Mount Malinig has a well-established trail with somewhat rugged and steep paths.

For those who like to experience spelunking in the Philippines, you can check out one of Marinduque’s subterranean wonders, the Bagumbungan Cave. It is often compared to Sumaguing Cave in Sagada because of its stalactites and stalagmites in impressive shapes and forms. Bagumbungan Cave is a great spelunking spot that features magnificent rock formations.

Among the well-known attractions in Marinduque is the Poctoy White Beach, a long stretch of fine white sand lined with palm trees in the coastal municipality of Torrijos. Surrounding the powdery beach are crystal clear waters that are ideal for swimming and kayaking. There are beachfront huts and cottages with chairs and tables, perfect for spending laidback afternoons on the beach.

Imagine standing in a lush setting as thousands of colorful butterflies fly all around. That’s exactly how you will feel when you visit the Butterfly Garden, one of the famous tourist spots in Gasan, Marinduque. The town, in fact, is the butterfly capital of the Philippines.

2. Maniwaya Island

Maniwaya Island boasts one of the longest stretches of powdery white sands in the province. You’ll feel like you are in the famed Boracay when you come here.

Add to that a mesmerizing view of the crystal-clear waters that are so inviting. Because the surrounding seas teem with marine life, you can snorkel here all day long.

From here, you can also check out the stunning Palad Sandbar and the enchanting Ungab Rock Formations. You’ll never run out of things to do here. That is why it’s one of the most popular tourist spots in Sta Cruz, Marinduque.

3. Kawa-Kawa Falls

Have you ever thought of climbing from the top of a waterfall towards its deep pool? That may sounds scary but thrilling at the same time. So, if you want to have such kind of adrenaline-pumping experience, hike your way to Kawa-Kawa Falls.

Kawa-Kawa falls is only around 15 feet high with a circular and deep catch basin. Try climbing the cliff and plunge or dive your way to the pool. Just make sure you know how to swim and you hit the deep part. I do that always wherever waterfall I go.

The crystal-clear and cold waters will surely give you that soothing experience you’re after. Swim around the pool as you relish the lush surroundings.

4. Poctoy Underwater Museum

Poctor Underwater Museum is near the Poctoy White Beach. It’s a man-made attraction set on a natural setting. When you dive here, you’ll find a statue of the iconic Morion.

The project was realized through the initiative of Cong. Lord Allan Velasco together with Marinduque drivers.

5. Malbog Sulfur Spring

Aside from the powdery beaches, you might want to have a relaxing moment at the Malbog Sulfur Spring. The sulfuric waters emanate from the slopes of Mount Malindig, an inactive volcano.

Not only will you enjoy the sticky, thermal waters but also experience the healing properties. Research shows that sulfuric springs can cleanse one of skin illnesses as well as colds. The place is also a good hang out especially for families and friends.

• Entrance Fee: Php 50 per person, Php 30 for Senior, PWD, Children

6. Poctoy White Beach

Another ideal spot for relaxation is Poctoy White Beach. As its name suggests, it also features white sands that extends for more than a kilometer.

One could not also help it but just stare at the mesmerizing waters. I bet expert swimmers would eventually take the plunge upon seeing the turquoise waters.

From the beach, you can also view the towering Mount Malindig, one of the hiking tourist spots in Marinduque. It’s a public beach so expect large crowd especially during weekends and holidays. But don’t worry; you’ll enjoy the rustic sceneries here.

It is one of the best tourist attractions in Marinduque.

7. Mount Malindig

For adventurers like me, the journey is sometimes not enough when no hiking is involved. So if you’re like that, trek your way to the majestic Mount Malindig.

Because the trails run on mostly gently-sloping terrains, assaulting Mount Malindig works for newbie hikers.

Along the way, expect to see unique flora and fauna species as the mountain is a critical biodiversity area. As you reach the higher elevations, you’ll witness alluring mossy forests.

While atop, you’ll catch a panoramic view of the rolling landscapes, beaches, and islands of Marinduque.

Hopefully, ecotourism will help sustain the rich flora and fauna of Mt Malindig.

8. Mongpong Island

Mongpong Island is one of the farthest tourist spots in Marinduque. But that’s all the more reason to have a peek especially if you’re into less touristy destinations.

A known landmark here is Ungab Rock located on the eastern part of the island. The rock formation resembles the shape of an arch and it towers for almost 100 feet.

From where Ungab Rock stands, you’ll find a long stretch of creamy-white beach. Although it is remote, some people live here. You can have meaningful interactions with them, learn about their culture, and share stories.

9. Boac Cathedral

Boac Cathedral is one of the historical tourist spots in Marinduque. It dates back to the Spanish colonizers who initiated the construction of the Cathedral. It’s known for its Gothic inspired architecture with resemblance to the churches in Latin America.

During the revolution against the Spaniards, Filipino warriors would often come here to seek blessing before heading out for war. The church also saw the blessing of the Philippine Revolutionary Flag in 1899.

10. Bathala Cave

Chasing for a memorable spelunking experience? Don’t miss visiting Bathala Cave system where you’ll discover 7 caves in all. Only four of these, however, are open for tourism. These caves are: Church Cave, Cemetery Cave, Python Cave, and Secret Cave. Each of this has unique feature to offer.

My favorite is the Python Cave which is literally home to several pythons, one of the biggest snake species. You can spot them as you explore the cave. But don’t worry. They are harmless as long as you follow proper practice. The locals are experts so for safety, they’ve got you covered.

11. Tres Reyes Islands

If you’re chasing secluded tourist spots in Gasan, Marinduque, visit the Tres Reyes Islands. There are three islands composing it namely, Baltazar Island, Melchor Islands, and Gaspar Island.

Craving for an amazing snorkeling experience? Check out Baltazar Island which thrives with endemic marine species as well as colorful coral reefs. Want to try cliff diving or jumping? Visit the Melchor Island, known for its scenic cliffs along its shores.

Then there’s Gaspar Island which is the biggest but it has only limited beaches. Nevertheless, there’s just nothing like it staying here because of the incredibly tranquil setting.

12. Mang Illeol Sunflower Garden

That’s right! You’ll not only find beautiful sunflowers in Benguet or Baguio City. You catch sight of them at Mang Illeol Sunflower Garden. It’s not as big as those found in Benguet, however, it still pays off visiting it for a Benguet-feel like experience here.

13. Bagumbungan Cave

Another favorite spelunking tourist spot in Marinduque is Bagumbungan Cave. Inside, you’ll find a variety of fascinating stalactite and stalagmite rock formations. Some are so bizarre-looking that you’ll think you’re in another planet.

Aside from rock formations, the cave features small waterfalls and a brook containing multiple pools. Take a look at these pools and you’ll find different marine creatures such as eels, catfish, shrimps, and crabs.

You can also chance on owls and bats inhabiting the cave. That just goes to show that Bagumbungan Cave remains pristine, therefore, there is the need to protect it.

14. St Joseph Parish

Another ideal spot for prayer and reflection is at St Joseph Parish, now one of the most frequented tourist spots in Gasan, Marinduque. It’s a huge church that can cater to thousands of worshippers in a given Sunday.

Aside from its colonial design, the church’s ceiling showcases patterns of the Buri fan, a popular handicraft in the area. A few meters from the church, you’ll find a garden where you can have a tranquil retreat. You can also see here the old bells of the church.

15. Luzon Datum of 1911

The Luzon Datum is a stone marker, nestled on a site that is considered the very center of the Philippines. Also called Station Balanacan, the stone marker sits on top of a hill referred to as Mt Mataas or Mataas na Bundok.

Before visiting Luzon Datum, please proceed to the barangay hall first in courtesy of the local officials and to inform them of your visit. Then, you can follow a road and another trail to reach the site.

Luzon Datum is one of the emerging tourist spots in Marinduque.

16. Marinduque National Museum

To learn more about the rich culture and history of the province, check out Marinduque National Museum. Here, you’ll find mostly photos depicting the culture of the local people. There are also retrieved items from sunken ships dating back during the wars.

The building where the museum lies is considered historical having been built in 1887. It is now one of the most frequented tourist spots in Boac, Marinduque.

Marinduque is a small island province found in the central region in the Philippines (hence its monicker “Heart of the Philippine Islands”). Perhaps the most famous tourist attraction in Marinduque, Maniwaya Island boasts of white-sand beaches and peaceful atmosphere that makes it perfect for relaxation and unwinding. You can also rent a kayak, paddle board, or snorkeling gears to explore its surrounding waters.

There are several casual beach resorts in Maniwaya Island, most of which offer affordable rooms. As such, the island is popular among budget tourists.

We’d already been to Maniwaya Island , where we camped and then island hopped to nearby spots such as Palad Sand Bar and Mongpong Island. But my favorite part of our visit was the snorkeling area where various types of corals were clearly visible from the boat because of how clear the water was!

Ungab Rock Formation is an arc-like rock formation located in Mongpong Island. It can be visited as part of the island hopping tour, which includes Maniwaya Island and Palad Sand Bar.

Here you can take pictures of the rock formation, cliff jump, or just swim at the beach. There is also a resort nearby where you can relax for the day.

We’d been to Ungab Rock Formation, and as one of the popular tourist spots in Marinduque it can be crowded especially on weekends. So if you want to visit in quiet times, schedule your trip on a weekday.

Craving for some sun, sand, and sea? Look no further than Palad Sand Bar, one of the popular tourist spots in Marinduque.

This sand bar is situated off the coast of Maniwaya Island, about 20 minutes away by boat. It features a stretch of fine white sand, crystal-clear waters, and a breathtaking panoramic view of the azure sea. It is surrounded by shallow water, making it an ideal swimming spot even for children. And of course, don’t forget to take IG-worthy spots of the sand bar!

Remember, it’s a sand bar, so time your visit perfectly to coincide with the low tide.

As the locals would say, there’s no need to go to Boracay when there’s a white-sand beach right here in Marinduque! Poctoy White Beach features one kilometer of powdery white sand and clear waters, perfect for swimming and other watersport activities. It also offers a view of Mt. Malindig from afar.

Tres Reyes Islands (which translates to “Three Kings Islands”) is a set of small islands named Gaspar, Melchor, and Baltazar, the names of three kings in the bible. These islands are a perfect day trip or overnight camping – just remember to bring your own tent!

Gaspar is the largest islands, with a beautiful white-sand cove perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Melchor features high cliffs, turquoise waters, and abundant marine life. Lastly, Baltazar is a renowned diving destination, with access to an underwater cave! Whether you like beach bumming or adventurous activities like snorkeling and diving, there is something for you at Tres Reyes Islands.

For those who love hiking, a trek to the summit of Mt. Malindig is a must-do activity in Marinduque. Mt. Malindig is a dormant stratovolcano, as evidenced by the presence of sulfuric hot springs at its base. It’s considered the highest point in the province.

The trek to the summit takes about 3 hours, where you’ll cross various trails – including coconut plantations, open grasslands, and a mossy forest reminiscent of other mountains such as Mount Pulag. While there isn’t much view at the summit, it’s a great place to relax and congratulate yourself for a climb well done.

After conquering the mountain, you can visit the nearby Poctoy White Beach for a post-climb swim!

Kawa-Kawa Falls is one of the lesser visited tourist spots in Marinduque, popular among locals and those looking for a quick swim. The waterfall is composed of three cascades, which resemble a kawa (a large deep cooking pan commonly used in the Philippines). Take photos of the waterfall framed by lush surroundings and head to the topmost cascade for the best swimming spot!

This attraction may be simple but makes for a great nature trip. As it is located in Sta. Cruz, it is also accessible and the entrance fee is affordable.

Boac Cathedral is one of the landmarks of Marinduque. Built in the 16th century, this beautiful church boasts a mix of Baroque and Romanasque styles. It has distinct red brick exterior, intricate wooden doors, and an ornate colonial altar inside.

For the people of Marinduque, the cathedral isn’t just a place of worship but a part of their history. As local stories go, in the past, locals sought refuge at this site during a pirate raid. They prayed to their patroness, Our Lady of Immaculate Concepcion . They then saw an apparition of a beautiful lady, who drove the invaders away. After the incident, they called their patron “ Ina ng Biglang Awa ” to honor her. Today

This cathedral is located on top of the highest hill in the town of Boac, offering views of the town and river. Getting here requires a short but steep climb, but as anyone would tell you it is worth a visit.

Malbog Sulfur Hot Spring is a great destination for family outings. Situated in the rustic town of Buenavista at the base of Mount Malindig, this natural wonder is famed for its hot sulfuric waters believed to possess healing properties. People from far and wide visit Malbog Sulfur Hot Spring, seeking relief from various ailments particularly skin conditions.

There are two pools at this resort, which are naturally heated by underground volcanic activity. Though it has a distinct smell of rotten eggs, it nonetheless provides a soothing bath for the body and soul. These caves are more than just fascinating geological formations, they also hold significant cultural and spiritual importance, with the locals believing them to be the dwelling place of Amang Bathala , the Supreme God of the Tagalogs.

Among the caves, four have explored. The Church Cave , the largest among them, stuns visitors with its cathedral-like structure adorned with naturally formed stalactites and stalagmites. The Python Cave is home to pythons, which are said believed to be pets of Bathala. The next cave, the Cemetery Cave , is a burial site. Lastly, the Underground Cave features an underground river.

Want to discover off-the-beaten-path attractions in Marinduque? Then check out Bulusukan Falls, a multi-tiered waterfall located amidst a mountain forest in the town of Buenavista. Getting here requires about an hour of trekking depending on your pace and includes rough trails and river crossings.

Let’s explore another one of the hidden gems of Marinduque! Natangco Island is an 8-hectare islet located in the town of Mogpog, about 45 minutes away from the town proper.

It features a small fine, white-sand cove, said to be one of the finest beaches in Marinduque . Get your sunscreen ready for beach bumming and swimming at this tropical paradise. Underwater enthusiasts would love to hear that the islet is a part of a marine sanctuary, where various species of fish are found – as do occasional sightings of manta rays.

Snorkelers and freedivers can explore the 30- to 40-feet fringing shelf reef on the western side of the islet. Meanwhile, scuba divers can explore the reefs that continue into near-perpendicular submarine cliffs down to the sandy bottom.

For water babies and outdoor enthusiasts, especially those who love exploring off-the-beaten spots, Natangco Island is one of the must-visit Marinduque tourist spots.

Did you know that Marinduque is considered the “ Butterfly Capital of the Philippines ”? It is the major supplier of butterfly and pupae products in the country, which are exported to collectors and exhibitors abroad.

How to Get to Marinduque

There are different ways on how to get to Marinduque from Manila.

Cebu Pacific flies to Gasan Airport in Marinduque a few times a week. Travel time is 45 minutes.

• Option 1 : Take a direct bus (via Jac Liner) from Manila to Marinduque. Travel time is 8 hours.
• Option 2 : Take a bus to Lucena Grand Terminal or Dalahican Port. From either location, you can take a ferry or roro to any of the ports in Marinduque: Balanacan Port (Mogmog), Cawit Port (Boac), or Buyabod Port (Sta. Cruz).

Marinduque best tourist spots – Complete travel guide

Marinduque Island is often overlooked by foreign tourists which makes it the perfect place if you don’t like touristy destinations. Some local tourists visit the island on weekends and holidays, well aware of the island’s many treasures. Marinduque has a lot to offer, the vegetation is lush and the beaches white-sanded. It will please everyone’s taste, with many interesting tourist spots and activities available such as trekking through scenic landscapes, refreshing waterfalls, warming hot springs, adventurous spelunking, and picture-perfect island hopping. Read on to discover all of Marinduque’s tourist spots.

Here are some of Marinduque best tourist spots :

Paadjao waterfalls.

The most famous waterfall in Marinduque, Mogpog is the perfect place to escape from the heat. There are several pools large enough to swim and it’s usually quiet during weekdays. You can even get a free massage, sitting on the rocks under the strong stream.

There are only two jeepneys per day doing the trip from Mogpog and back. You might want to hire a tricycle.

Marinduque hot spring and resort

Like most islands in the Philippines, Marinduque is volcanic so you can visit some hot springs. Surrounded by nature, the resort is really nice and worth a stop if you’re not too hot. They have some cabins and you can also camp there. Spending a night could be fun as the hot springs are more enjoyable at night time. Take a warm bath and just gaze at the stars.

There are a couple of pools there, some can even be rented privately. To get there you’ll need to go to Buenavista and then hire a tricycle. The entrance fee is 50 pesos. Check their Facebook page for more information.

Poctoy White Beach

To get there you can take a jeepney from Santa Cruz or Torrijos. The last trip is around 5 pm. From the beach, you can hire a boat to take you island hopping to the Tres Reyes Islands: Baltazar, Malchor, and Gaspar.  You’ll find there some nice snorkeling spots as well as beautiful white-sand beaches.

Maniwaya island and island hopping

The island hopping on the east coast of Marinduque is really nice. You can either get to Santa Cruz pier in the morning and rent a boat for the day, or take a passenger boat to Maniwaya Island. There’s a daily boat leaving at 11 am, sooner if it’s full. The fare is 80 pesos. The return trip is at 7 am the next day. They also have a boat coming from General Santos directly to Maniwaya.

Maniwaya island has a beautiful white-sand beach and surprisingly a lot of accommodation options, mostly tents. Another surprise, it’s pretty crowded with local tourists, especially during weekends and holidays. You’ll easily find a boat or a group to join for island hopping if you’re not a large group. The island is a lot of fun, and Filipinos are usually really friendly, so if you’re solo traveling you won’t get bored there.

Marinduque Wildlife Sanctuary

Two areas in South Marinduque have been declared protected and the community is now organizing trekking through this area. Several levels and distances of treks are available. A guide is mandatory and the price varies according to the trek you choose to do. You can also arrange to camp there.

The views are amazing, the landscape impressive and you might spot some birds such as hornbills.

Bagumbungan Underground River Cave

This 2 kilometers deep cave is for true adventurers, you’ll have to crawl, you’ll have to hike and you’ll have to get wet. A lot of fun if you like to get down and dirty. Visiting the cave through and through takes about 4 hours. Another option is to only visit half of the cave and then go back on your steps.

You can take a jeepney from Santa Cruz to get to the cave.

Entrance fee: 300 pesos – mandatory guide included

If you don’t like « extreme » caving, you can visit Ka Amon Cave in Bonliw and Tarug Cave in Bocboc . For both, you’ll need to arrange for a guide to accompany you, but visiting these caves is way much easier than visiting Bagumbongan.

Don’t miss the Mariones festival

Each year, during Easter week, Marinduque holds its famous Mariones festival celebrating the life of Longinus. He was a Roman soldier who wounded Jesus during the Crucifixion. Jesus’ blood healed his blind eye. He converted and was later executed.

Most of the celebrations are held in Boac. Everyone is disguised as a Roman centurion and one of the major events is the chase of Longinus around the city and nearby fields.

If you cannot make it to the festival you can check out the Marinduque National Museum . They have a collection of Moriones masks as well as some explanations about the festival and its history. You can also visit Dick Malapote Workshop near Magpog. He’s one of the most famous Mariones costume makers and has been at it for more than 25 years.

How to get to Marinduque

There are daily boats leaving from General Santos and Lucena to the north of the island. Getting around Marinduque by public transportation is not easy, I recommend renting a motorbike in Lucena and taking it on the ferry, I’m not sure you’ll easily find bike rentals in Marinduque, especially for a couple of days.

Marinduque itinerary and where to stay

I would recommend staying at least 3 days, but you can pick and choose and only “do” one of the days listed below.

Day 1 – Visit the main island’s highlights

Assuming you have you’re own vehicle or have hired a driver, you can start the day heading to Station Balanacan to get a panoramic view of the island, then head to Paadjao Fall . You can also visit nearby Tarug Cave and Bagumbungan Cave . If you visit Bagumbungan, spend the night in Santa Cruz. If you don’t, you0ll have time to visit Poctoy White Beach , and you can spend the night at Marinduque Hot Springs and Resort .

Day 2 – Island hopping in Maniwaya Island and around

I would advise spending the night on Maniwaya if you have time and if you like the beach. Otherwise, one day is fine, and you can spend another night in Santa Cruz.

Day 3 – Trekking in Marinduque Wildlife Sanctuary

Spend your last day exploring inland, looking for wildlife and enjoying the stunning scenery.

It is said that there are a total of seven caves inside Bathala Cave but only four are allowed to be explored due to safety reasons. The first one is the Simbahan Cave which incredibly resembles that of an ancient church due to the beautiful rock formations that seemingly create an altar. Next, is the Python Cave which is guarded by a python and thousands of bats hanging from the ceiling. The Underground Cave on the other hand is said to keep a breathtaking underground river. Finally, the fourth cave is known as the Cemetery Cave because several buried remains of men were found inside it. It is believed that these are the remains of World War II soldiers.

Torrijos is 4 th -class municipality in the province of Marinduque , Philippines, with a population of 29,366 people as of 2010. Historically, an engagement during the Philippine-American War in Torrijos plotted Colonel Maximo Abad and American Devereux Shields’s forces, where Abad’s men annihilated the Americans, becoming one of the worst defeats suffered by the colonists during the war. History of Torrijos

The town of Torrijos was founded on May 25, 1880 with Matoya-toya, Bonleo, Buangan, Cabuyo, Mabucao, Tigui, Marlangga, Pacarcasan, Maranlig, Poctoy, Napo and Malibago as the 12 original barrios.

The place was the scene of heavy fight during the Philippine-American War in 1889 where the Americans suffered defeat.

ABOUT MARINDUQUE

Marinduque is part of MIMAROPA region in Luzon and best known for its solemn tradition held annually during Holy Week – the Moriones Festival.  This heart-shaped island is composed of 6 towns connected by a scenic road  –  Gasan, Buenavista, Torrijos, Sta.Cruz, Mogpog and Boac , its capital.

MARINDUQUE PRE-TRAVEL GUIDE

Best Time to Visit: Holy Week (around March or April) and Summer are the best season to visit, it’s the time of the year when Marinduque comes alive. But it is possible to explore Marinduque year-round, when it’s typically laidback. Just check the weather updates during the rainy season before proceeding.

Modes of Payment: Everything is on cash basis. Stack up cash before visiting.  There are 3 PNB ATMs and there’s also an RCBC ATM, but available cash may be limited as the entire island depends on them.

Mobile Signal and Data: There’s mobile signal and data for both Smart and Globe in Boac and Gasan, but if you’re visiting far-off destinations like Maniwaya Island, the mobile signal is intermittent and data is unreliable. So, best to pick a hotel with free Wi-Fi.

Electricity: Like the rest of the Philippines, Marinduque uses Type A socket. Electricity is 220V, 60Hz.

Marinduque Safety: Marinduque is safe for tourists, the province reportedly has zero crime rate. It’s one of the safest places for solo travelers in the Philippines. But of course, as in any other places, be careful with your valuables, don’t just leave them anywhere.

  WHERE TO STAY IN MARINDUQUE

  Boac, the capital of Marinduque, is a convenient base when exploring the island, as most old and new hotel, restaurants, shops, and ATMs are located here.

I highly recommend this hotel, as it is pretty clean and the staff are helpful.  Check-in process was slow though, but overall, I like my stay here.  My room was spacious, clean, with aircon, toiletries, towel, hot and cold shower, TV, and refrigerator.  My bed was comfortable too, so I had a pleasant sleep.  Breakfast is included in the room rate.

I stayed here during my first visit to Marinduque.  This is an old hotel in Boac, they have basic and cheap fan and aircon rooms. If you’re traveling on budget, you may want to consider this.

How to get to marinduque.

Marinduque Airport in Gasan has finally re-opened, making the trip to Marinduque from Manila faster.  The most convenient way is by flying via Cebu Pacific Airlines to Marinduque, that has 3 scheduled flights weekly – Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday.  The flight departs from NAIA Terminal 4, and travel time is about 45 minutes.

Here’s the Cebu Pacific flight schedule between Manila and Marinduque:

Manila – Marinduque:

Monday: (Departure) 3:25 PM, (Arrival) 4:25 PM

Wednesday: (Departure) 6:00 AM, (Arrival) 7:00 AM

  OPTION 1 (MANILA TO MARINDUQUE BY FERRY)

1.From Cubao, ride a bus to Marinduque. Jac Liner has daily direct bus trips to Marinduque from their Cubao Terminal. The bus departs at 4:00 PM from Cubao to Marinduque, but you need to board the bus by 3:00 PM. Meanwhile, the bus from Marinduque to Cubao leaves at 2:00 PM daily from Sta.Cruz, Marinduque. You can proceed to the bus stop of each town, like the bus stop in Boac where they will pick up passengers. Reservation in advance is required.

2.Alight at Boac or wherever town your hotel/resort is located. The bus onboard the ferry will arrive in Balanacan Port in Mogpog. It will then leave and continue to drop passengers at bus stops in other towns like Boac, Gasan, and Sta.Cruz.

Fare: ₱880 – $17 (covers bus fare, ferry fare + terminal fee)

Travel time: About 8 hours

OPTION 2 (LUCENA TO MARINDUQUE BY FERRY)

1.From Manila, ride a bus bound for Dalahican Port, Lucena. Jac Liner in Cubao Terminal has hourly trips daily from 2:00 AM – 10:00 PM and midnight trips from 11:00 PM – 12:00 PM. And they have 24 hours operation from Friday to Sunday. Fare is roughly PHP 228. If you’re coming from Alabang, proceed to South Bus Station, there are buses bound for Dalahican Port/Grand Terminal stopping there.

2.From Dalahican Port, ride a ferry (Montenegro or Starhorse Shipping Line) to Balanacan Port in Marinduque. You have to pay for the ferry fare + terminal fee.

3.Alight at Balanacan Port in Mogpog, Marinduque.

4.Ride a jeepney to Boac or wherever your hotel is.

(Adult): ₱228 (bus) + ₱260 – (ferry) + ₱30 (terminal fee) = ₱518 ($10)

(Student w/ ID): ₱228 (bus) + ₱221 (ferry) + ₱24.60 (terminal fee) = ₱518 ($10)

(Senior w/ ID): ₱228 (bus) + ₱186 (ferry) + ₱24.60 (terminal fee) = ₱518 ($10)

HOW TO GET FROM MARINDUQUE AIRPORT TO BOAC (MARINDUQUE TOWN CENTER)

  by tricycle.

  From Marinduque Airport, you can rent a tricycle to Boac. Fare is ₱150 ($2.90), good for 2 persons.

  By Jeepney

  From Gasan, you can ride a jeepney to Boac, fare is ₱25 ($0.48) per person.

  HOW TO GET AROUND MARINDUQUE

  A cheap way to get around Marinduque Island is by jeep. Depending on the destination, fare starts at ₱10 ($0.19) for short distance rides and inter-town trips can cost around ₱25 ($0.48) – ₱100 ($2). Take note that jeepneys around Marinduque only run until about 4:00 PM, your next option is to hire a tricycle if you miss the last trip.

BY TRICYCLE

  Fare starts at ₱13 ($0.25), within the town proper. Tricycles can be chartered, but it’ll be quite expensive for inter-town trips.

BY VAN RENTAL/TOUR PACKAGE

  If you are a large group and you want a hassle-free way to explore Marinduque, you can rent a van or avail of tour packages from Dream Favor Travel and Tours.  Van rental starts at ₱1,500 (good for 1-10 persons) within Boac or Gasan, rental depends on the destination you want to visit, of course if it is far, the price is higher.  I’ve tried their service and they are pretty reliable, so I highly recommend them.

For inter-island trips, you can ride a passenger boat, usual fare is ₱70 ($1.35) – ₱150 ($3).  Or you can charter a boat to your destination, chartered boat usually costs ₱1,000 ($19) – ₱1,500 ($29), good for 4-6 persons.

MARINDUQUE TOURIST SPOTS AND TOP THINGS TO DO

You’ll never run out of things to do in Marinduque as there’s a plethora of attractions here. Here’s a list of some of the top tourist attractions in Marinduque.

  BOAC MARINDUQUE TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

  moriones festival.

Marinduque is best known for  Moriones Festival, or Moryonan. It is not actually your usual festival, but a solemn religious tradition, held annually during Holy Week. You can witness Moriones in different towns in Marinduque like Boac, Gasan, Mogpog and Sta.Cruz. During Moriones, locals participate in the tradition wearing their own Moriones costumes and masks depicting angry Roman soldiers. They are typically sporting capes, sandals, and breastplates  while carrying their swords, shields, and spears.

During our recent Marinduque trip, we were blessed to meet some of the devoted locals still practicing ancient traditions that were passed down from the old generation.

We got to meet the Ladies in Papua of Gasan – sporting black clothes and crown created from Pupua vines.  During Holy Week, they join the procession barefooted and wearing their costumes and Papua leaves headdress. They practice this because of their panata , each Ladies of Papua have their own story to share on why they started their custom. Many of them, are thankful for the blessing they received.

There’s also Pataraka Boys who are wearing their own costumes – usually in white, red or blue.  They are fully covered from head to feet, you can only see their eyes.  The Pataraka Boys carry different instruments made from wood and bamboo, and during the procession on Lenten Season, they play this altogether. This age-old tradition was also handed down to them by their fathers or relatives.

I haven’t witnessed Moriones Festival yet,  but it sure is one on my list of things to do when I revisit Marinduque again in the future.

BOAC CHURCH

Constructed in 1792, Boac Cathedral is devoted to Our Lady of Biglang Awa.  It served as a refuge for the Filipinos and Spaniards when pirates attack. The age-old façade, the belfry, the body, the flying buttresses, the belfry and the altar are well-preserved, while the ceiling and other parts of the church seems new.

How to get to Boac Church: If you’re already in Boac town, walk or ride a tricycle to Boac Church. Fare is ₱13 ($0.25).

  This is the execution site of many Filipino revolutionaries. Boac Plaza is also the site where Col. Maximo Abad and his 300 Filipino soldiers surrendered during the Philippine-American War. Within the park is the Municipal Building, Rizal Statue, and Marinduque National Museum Branch.

How to get to Boac Plaza: If you’re already in Boac town, walk or ride a tricycle to Boac Plaza. Fare is ₱13 ($0.25).

MARINDUQUE NATIONAL MUSEUM BRANCH

The Marinduque Museum that is located in Boac Plaza is being renovated when we visited. The exhibits on display are mostly photos, but when I visited a few years back, most of the displays are artefacts excavated in Marinduque like pieces retrieved from sunk galleons, shells, antiques, old photos of the people of the island, costumes, and Moriones masks. Marinduque Museum is housed in an old historic building dating back to 1887 that served as the first boy’s school in Marinduque, a library, and a Municipal Trial Court Building.

Entrance Fee: ₱ 20 ($0.39) – adult, ₱ 10 ($0.19) – children

Open Hours: Monday to Friday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

How to get to Marinduque Museum: If you’re already in Boac town, walk or ride a tricycle to Boac Plaza. Fare is ₱13 ($0.25).

BOAC OLD HOUSES

Many Spanish-era houses are still standing to date at Boac town center. Some are well-preserved, others are sadly forgotten. It’s a pretty nice place for a leisurely walk late afternoon or early in the morning. Some houses here are declared heritage houses by the National Historic Institute, look for the marker. We entered one of the age-old houses here and it’s quite interesting to see it well-preserved, including some antique cabinets, tables, pianos, etc. and still being used by its owner until now.

How to get to Boac Old Houses: If you’re already in Boac town, walk or ride a tricycle to or near the Boac Plaza where most old houses are concentrated. Tricycle fare is ₱13 ($0.25).

GASAN MARINDUQUE TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

Gasan church.

One of the most beautiful churches in Marinduque is Gasan Church or St. Joseph Parish Church situated in Poblacion, built in 1609.  The church has a staircase leading to the main entrance. The ceiling is beautifully-adorned with fan-like carvings and the beams are designed with polished coconut shell tiles. There’s also a garden overlooking the blue bay of Gasan spinkled with the Tres Reyes Islands.  Here you can also find some ancient bells on display.

Entrance Fee: FREE

How to get to Gasan Church:

1.Take a jeepney to Gasan. Jeepney fare is roughly  ₱25 ($0.48).

2.Take a tricycle to Gasan Church.  Tricycle fare is ₱13 ($0.25).

GASAN OLD HOUSES

Gasan like Boac is also peppered with old houses, dating back to the Spanish colonial period. If Boac seems commercialized already, Gasan’s atmosphere exhibits a laidback provincial life.  Many of the old houses here though are in a state of despair, just like in Boac.  I hope the old houses in Marinduque get the much-needed restoration from experts.

How to get to Gasan Old Houses:

1.From Boac, ride a jeep to Gasan. Jeepney fare is roughly  ₱25 ($0.48).

2.Alight at Gasan town proper.

2.Walk around the town proper where Gasan Old Houses are situated.

GASAN SEAVIEW PARK

Gasan Seaview Park, also called Gasan Bay Walk, is a relaxing place to hang out. Fairs and events are usually held here, but on regular days, it’s quiet and relaxing and offers a great view of the blue sea and the Tres Reyes Islands.  A few meters away is the wooden suspension footbridge, that connects to Brgy. Dili.

Travel Tip: The  big passenger boat going to Pinamalayan, Mindoro dock here. I took this route going to Mindoro during my backpacking trip in 2012. As far as I can remember it leaves early in the morning and takes about 3 hours to Mindoro. Always check the weather before proceeding, avoid traveling during rainy season.

How to get to Gasan Seaview Park:

1.From Boac, take a jeepney to Gasan, fare is roughly  ₱25 ($0.48).

2.Alight at Gasan Proper.

3.Walk or take a tricycle to Gasan Seaview Park. Tricycle fare is around ₱13 ($0.25).

TRES REYES ISLANDS

The 3 islands off the coast of Gasan named after the 3 Kings: Gaspar, Melchor, and Baltazar are collectively called Tres Reyes Island.   During my first visit in Marinduque,  I went to Gasan Seaview Park where the islands are already visible.  But you can also see them from the shores of other Gasan beaches.  To reach the island, you can rent a boat for about ₱1,500 ($29), good for 3-4 persons. If you’ll only visit Gaspar Island, it should cost you around ₱ 1,000 ($19) (good for 3-4 persons).

  How to get to Tres Reyes Islands:

4.Rent a boat to Tres Reyes Island. ₱1,500 ($29)

Mang Illeol Sunflower Garden

  There’s a newly opened sunflower farm in Marinduque, and it is located near the Marinduque Airport in Gasan.  It’s open as early as 7:00 AM until dawn. The place is just small, don’t expect much, but it is peppered with sunflower and other small flowers.

Entrance Fee: ₱20 ($0.39)

How to get to Mang Illeol Sunflower Garden in Marinduque:

  1.Take a jeep to Gasan, tell the driver you are getting off at the Sunflower garden.

2. Alight at Mang Illeol Sunflower Garden. Fare is about ₱25 ($0.48).

TORRIJOS MARINDUQUE TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

Poctoy beach.

If you want to bask in a beach in Marinduque without emptying your wallet, head to Poctoy Beach in Torrijos. It’s one of the most popular beaches in the province because it is pretty accessible.  The beach has fine, cream sand hugged by denim blue water.  What makes it more dramatic is the view of Mt.Malindig from a distance. Cottage rental is ₱300 ($6).

Entrance Fee: ₱50 ($1)

How to get to Poctoy Beach:

  1.Ride a jeep to Torrijos. Alternatively, you may take a jeep to Sta.Cruz, and then from there, ride a jeep to Torrijos.  Fare is roughly ₱100 ($2).

Or, if coming from Boac or Gasan, if there’s no jeep to Torrijos, take a jeep to Buenavista and transfer to a jeep to Torrijos.

2.Tell the driver to drop you off at Poctoy Beach.

3.Alight at Poctoy Beach.

4.Pay the entrance fee of roughly ₱50 ($1).

  STA.CRUZ MARINDUQUE TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

  bagumbungan cave.

Bagumbungan Cave is classified as a Class II cave. Thus, some sections of the cave are off-limits for safety reasons and you can only explore it with a trained guide. It is located in the confines of the Brgy. San Isidro and Brgy.Punong in Sta.Cruz, Marinduque.

Bagumbungan Cave was actually discovered by the locals who used to collect the edible nest of swiftlet that is used for making bird’s nest soup. But when a spelunker tipped off the DENR about the grotto, an exploration to map the routes and wildlife inside the cavern went underway. In 2013, the cave was opened for tourism.

  Halfway (up to the falls) – ₱150 ($3) per person

All the way (up to Punong Exit) *recommended – ₱300 ($6) per person

  IMPORTANT:

  *Senior and student – 20% discount with valid ID

*Optional certificate – ₱ 50 ($1)

*Minimum number of guests is 2, so if you are a solo traveler, you will have to pay for 2 persons.

  How to get to Bagumbungan Cave:

1.Take a jeepney to Brgy.Lamesa in Sta.Cruz. Fare is about ₱50 ($1).

2.At Brgy.Lamesa, take the jeepney to Brgy.San Isidro. Fare is ₱20 ($0.38).

3.Alight at Brgy.San Isidro.

4.Register and pay the fees at Bagumbungan Cave.

Maniwaya island.

Maniwaya Island, a small, palm-fringed island off the coast of  Marinduque is as an ideal weekend getaway for urbanites. It’s a tropical cliché, where you can bask in the cream sand and swim in its azure water.

Palad sandbar.

This tiny speck of sandbar off the coast of Maniwaya Island only appears when the tide is low.  So, make sure you check the time of low tide on the day of your island hopping so you won’t get disappointed.

MOGPOG TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

  luzon datum of 1911.

  Luzon Datum of 1911 in Station Balanacan is a stone marker that serves as the geodetic center of the Philippines, the reference for all geodetic surveys in the country.  Since it is situated on top of Mt.Mataas in Mogpog, Marindqueu, you need to climb 468 steps to reach the marker.  Bring water to keep yourself hydrated. The best time to visit is during sunset, as it offer a great view of the sunset and the panoramic view of Tayabas Bay, Mongpong Pass, and  a portion of Tablas Strait.  But you need to make sure you hire a tricycle that will wait for you on your way back. I didn’t get to reach the top because I had an injury between my legs. I stayed at the jumping off point where I relished the sunset view. Do register at Brgy. Hinanggayon’s office before climbing.

1.Take a jeepney to Mogpog.

2.Hire a tricycle to Luzon Datum of 1911. ₱150 ($3)

BUENAVISTA MARINDUQUE TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

Malbog sulfuric hot spring resort.

If you happen to be in Buenavista, you can drop by at Malbog Sulfuric Hot Spring Resort. Its water are said to be therapeutic because of its volcanic origin.  This hot spring resort is situated at the foot of a mountain in Marinduque. It is a famous swimming place for the locals as it is believed that taking a dip in its sulfuric water will heal skin conditions and other ailments.  The place is also dubbed as “Mabaho”, because of its smelly odor due to the sulfur emission.

Entrance Fee: ₱45 ($0.87) – adult, ₱30 ($0.58)– kids, Senior Citizen, PWD

How to get there:

1.Ride a jeep to Buenavista. ₱50 ($1)

2.Alight at Buenavista.

3.Ride a tricycle to Malbog Sulfuric Hot Spring. ₱13 ($0.25)

MT. MALINDIG

The picturesque mountain of Mt.Malindig crowns Marinduque. Located in the confines of Buenavista, Mt. Malindig is the highest peak in Marinduque and can be done as a day hike. If you plan to summit this mountain, the jumping-off point is in Brgy. Sihi in Buenavista. Do register and hire a local guide for your safety.

₱500 ($10) – Guide fee (good for 4 persons)

  WHERE TO EAT IN MARINDUQUE

  café mamita.

  One of the popular places to dine in Marinduque is Mamita Café, situated at the ground floor of Boac Hotel. We had lunch here during our recent trip to Boac. The restaurant exhibits a vintage atmosphere because of its interior and the old photographs hanging on its walls. They served us some of their specialties including mamakla (a cross between lobster and prawn), bulalo and grilled blue marlin.

CASA DON EMILIO

Another popular restaurant in Boac, located in a chocolate-colored heritage house is Casa Don Emilio fronting the Boac Plaza.  The place is beautifully-preserved, dappled with vintage furniture and  musical instruments. We had dinner here with the Boac mayor Roberto Madla. And we really enjoyed the food like adobo, fish, fresh lumpia, and of course the Marinduque lechon, one of the best lechon I’ve tasted in the Philippines.

PALMS BY THE BEACH

This place has one of the best view of sunset in Marinduque.  Best to drop by here during sunset, the sunset over the cove is truly beautiful. We had dinner here and enjoyed their seafood.

REJANOS BAKERY

If you’re going to buy pasalubong in Marinduque, don’t miss the arrowroot cookies made from uraro or arrowroot plant. They are bite-size and looks like meringue.  The best place to buy arrowroot cookies is from Rejano’s Bakery in Sta.Cruz, Marinduque.  This family-owned business established in 1946 started the arrowroot cookies industry in Marinduque.  They are now exporting these healthy cookies in international market.

MARINDUQUE ITINERARY + BUDGET

Here’s a sample Marinduque itinerary with budget for a 5-days, 4-night stay. The sample budget doesn’t include accommodation, souvenirs, and transportation to and from Manila. Budget is per person if you are 2 people traveling.

Here’s the tourist attractions covered:

Day 1 Gasan Old Houses, Gasan Seaview Park, Gasan Church, Boac Church, Boac Old Houses, Boac Museum, Luzon Datum of 1911.

If you are not into spelunking, you can skip Bagumbungan Cave and replace it with Maniwaya Island. So, your Marinduque itinerary will be down to 4-days and 3-nights.

Take note that if you’re commuting, jeeps run until about 4:00 PM only, your next option is to hire a tricycle.

MARINDUQUE TRAVEL TIPS AND REMINDERS

•   Stack up cash before your visit as everything is on cash basis.
•   Large stores and groceries are available in Boac, Gasan and Sta.Cruz, even in Maniwaya Island and Poctoy Beach, stores are scattered, so you don’t really need to bring groceries from Manila.
• Bring dry bag if you plan to do island hopping and spelunking.
• Wear comfortable shoes as you may do a lot of walking.
• Bring your own water bottle, refill water to keep yourself hydrated.
• Leave no trace. Dispose your trash properly. . Anything left on the beaches end up in the ocean.
• Bring aqua shoes if you are going to snorkel.
• Electricity in Maniwaya Island runs from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM only, so make sure to charge your gadgets and camera batteries.
• If you are a solo traveler, you can ask the boat operator  in Maniwaya Island or your beach resort if you can join a group tour to save money
• Do not step, stand or kick live corals when snorkeling as they are super sensitive and you’ll end up killing them.  Do not take out the starfish from the sea for your Instagram photo.
• Leave the seashells alone, do not take them home as souvenirs.  They serve as natural habitat for some marine animals, and they play an important role in creating beautiful, sandy beaches. Admire them in their natural habitat.

7 Tourist Spots for Your MARINDUQUE ITINERARY

Marinduque is a popular summer, holiday and weekend destination because of its accessibility to Metro Manila. There are direct buses from Metro Manila to Marinduque. A ticket costs around P900-1000 per way. If you’re unable to catch that one, you have the option to board a bus bound for Dalahican Port. The fare is approximately P270. From the port, ride a boat going to Balanacan Port in Marinduque. The ticket costs P150 to P390, depending on which boat type you boarded. This heart-shaped island also has a number of attractions that will fill your itinerary.

One of the reasons the province is popular is because of the Lenten Season festivities of the Moriones Festival. During this time, you’ll see people wearing colorful costumes and masks. They parade around and reenact biblical events. This is a way for locals to display their faith and enjoy each others’ company. If you’re planning to go because of this occasion, make reservations beforehand because it gets busy during this time.

Relax and Unwind at Poctoy Beach

Marinduque has a couple of beautiful beaches worth visiting, and one of them is Poctoy Beach. This destination in Torrijos is an idyllic place to visit. The whitish shore, blue waters, and swaying trees create the perfect background for a relaxing day out. Wade in the waters, get a tan, have a picnic, play volleyball and other similar activities.

To see more of the province’s picturesque, natural beauty, be sure to include Ungab Rock Formation in your itinerary. This towering work of nature forms a natural bridge over the turquoise waters below it. Go swimming, take as many photos as you want and chill for a while before heading to your next stop.

The beauty of the province isn’t just in its beaches and landscapes, it also has a stunning subterranean world. Bagumbungan Cave has different chambers you can explore. These have stalactites and stalagmites and natural pools. You’ll have to walk through tight spaces to see these. The effort you put in is worth it.

The Bathala Caves is another place to go caving, it also has fetching subterranean formations and has several bats hanging on its ceiling. Locals also said that there are pythons lurking in it. If you’re up for an adventure, this is the spot to visit.

Island-hopping Escapade

Marinduque is another province where you can go on an island-hopping escapade. It has a handful of beaches where you can enjoy the sun, sand and warm waters. The islands of Baltazar, Gaspar, and Melchor, collectively known as Tres Reyes , are the places you’ll visit for this activity.

Gaspar Island is the biggest and most popular of the trio. Its shore is big enough for a crowd – visitors can relax and unwind and do beach-related activities. Melchor has stunning and picturesque rock formations, while Baltazar is an ideal spot for diving and visiting an underwater cave. Your starting point for this is Gasan where you can rent a boat from P1000 to P1500 for a day.

Visit Palad Sandbar and Maniwaya Island

Maniwaya Island and the nearby Palad Sandbar are possible stops you can add to your itinerary. Most visitors spend at least a night here because of the boat schedules and time it takes to reach. The island has a bucolic ambiance with its trees and scenic beach views. The soft shore is surrounded by cerulean waters that will entice you to take a refreshing dip.

After visiting the beaches and islands, get to know more about the province’s roots. A walk around the the town of Boac will provide you with a glimpse of how locals used to live. You’ll see a number of heritage houses in various states of repair and disrepair.

Where to Stay in Marinduque

If you’re looking for accommodation, your ideal base is Boac. The town has some affordable places to stay for those on a budget. It also has restaurants, small cafeterias, shops and markets where you can eat and buy food for day trips. There are regular vans, jeeps and other transportation to explore the island. You’ll also get to see heritage buildings and old churches in town.

If you want a place to stay near the beach, Poctoy Beach is a possible option for you. Here, you’ll get your fix of sun, sand and sea just outside your accommodation. There are also vans and jeeps that regularly pass by the entrance of the beach for easy access. Maniwaya Island is also an alternative place to look for accommodation. You can pitch a tent or stay at a nearby resort. If you haven’t booked any yet, here are some of the top resorts as rated by Agoda users (as of January 2019).

Poctoy White Beach Travel Guide

A different view of a beach.

Poctoy White Beach in Torrijos, Marinduque is definitely a must-see destination. We were amazed by its impressive sight. Imagine a long stretch of white sand beach and an astonishing Mt. Malindig as your bonus background?

Poctoy White Beach might be outshined by its more popular neighbor, Maniwaya Island in Sta. Cruz, an hour travel away. But, in Poctoy, you can have a better place for relaxation and sanctuary. We went here last, December 2, 2017 (Saturday) and we were surprised it’s not crowded though it was during late in the morning, there were number of visitors coming. What we really liked about Poctoy Beach is that you no longer need to rent a boat(which usually ranges from P2000.00 and above) unlike the other beaches in Marinduque. It is perfect for people travelling in small groups, or for couples with tight budget.

The water is clear and refreshing. If you prefer some water activities, they have kayaking and boating.

Kayak – P200/hour Boat – P400/hour

• Environmental Fee – P50/pax
• Cottage – P300/day, P600/overnight
• FREE pitching of tent (own) but you can rent their tent for P400 – P500
• Food – there are small canteens and eateries near the beach with P70 – P120 per meal

And when it comes to beauty, I would probably say Marinduque is one of my favorite destinations in Luzon, with all the beaches, adventure sports, and thrilling diving activities.

There’s also no need to worry about traveling solo in the province, as it was hailed as the Most Peaceful Province of the country in 2013.

Did you also know that the island resembles a human heart when seen from above? Interesting, isn’t it? But there’s more to Marinduque than meets the eye. Read the full article to make the most of your visit to the province!

Eat Kari-Kari at Casa de Don Emilio

Who would ever resist a savory and mouthwatering Kari-Kari, most importantly that it’s made at Casa de Don Emilio! Situated on the 2nd floor of a heritage house right across the Boac town plaza, this dining place serves local cuisine, which is an absolute must-try, including adobo sa gata and the famous Kari-Kari?

Surrounding its interiors are old musical instruments hanging on the wall bringing a more authentic vibe to the whole place.

Discover the Best Beaches of Marinduque

There’s no other way for the beach bums to appreciate the province than to explore Marinduque’s serene and best beaches . This coastal province has one of the best Instagram-worthy beaches to visit, so make sure you don’t miss it on your itinerary.

Such beaches you should see include the white-sand Poctoy Beach , the Palad Sandbar , Mongpong Island, Aroma Beach, and Maniwaya Island, to name a few. Don’t forget to bring your sunscreen!

Visit Kawa-kawa Falls

If you’re wondering where one of Marinduque’s most peaceful parts is, visit the Kawa-Kawa falls at Barangay Bangcuangan in Santa Cruz. It’s a very tranquil surrounding, and you can even rent a cottage to rest at. It got its name from the literal kawa because it resembles the butt-rounded pan. Definitely, a sight to behold.

Exploring the Bathala Cave

For those who want to visit the famous cave surrounded by natural rock formations and a church-like interior, you can see it here at Bathala Cave, situated at Barangay Ipil in Sta. Cruz. The cave is also said to be mysterious, a playground of the gods, and out of its seven caves, only four are allowed to be visited. Just a tip, don’t forget to keep your mouths closed because hundreds of giant bats hang in the ceiling.

Visiting Gaspar, Melchor, and Baltazar Islands

More water activities await at Marinduque, including visiting the Gaspar, Melchor, and Baltazar Islands collectively known as Tres Reyes Islands . Named after the three kings of the nativity, these three islands off the coast of Gasan are also considered a popular destination in the province. These islands can be reached in more or less half an hour by boat. It’s an ideal place for snorkeling, swimming, and even picnics.

Visit the Boac Cathedral

Make your Marinduque visit even more memorable when visiting the Boac Cathedral, situated at Barangay Mataas. Built in 1792, this church is a fortress that was home to locals during a Moro attack in the 1800s.

You can still see the high-bricked walls surrounding the churchyard when you visit. What struck me most about this church is its beautifully carved doors, the sun-like design on the ceilings, and the gothic architecture.

See the interiors of the Sta. Cruz Church

If you want to see old churches built in the Spanish era, you should check out the Sta. Cruz Church. Built in 1714, the church is more likely a literal work of art. You’ll see how they creatively painted the ceilings with the portrayal of the station of the cross and intricately-made altar.

Visit the Catholic Church of Gasan

Like other churches in the province of Marinduque, the Catholic Church of Gasan is located on top of a hill overlooking the town and the vast blue ocean. Also known as the St. Joseph Parish Church of Gasan, this massive church is located in an elevated area at the center of the Poblacion. The design of the ceiling is patterned after a Buri fan, a famous handicraft in the town of Gasan. The beams were covered with polished “bao” or coconut shells, apart from its beautiful white retablo. The church also has a garden where the old church bells are placed. The church also has a view deck that offers a panoramic view of the town.

Explore the Bagumbungan Cave

Those who seek adventure and wilderness should head to the Bagumbungan Cave , which spans 1.9 km. It is located at Sitio Puti Barangay in San Isidro, just discovered less than a decade ago. This cave is the next biggest cave in the province, next to the Bathala Cave.

Before you enter, there will be an orientation on what and what not and what to expect inside. Also, the Bagumbungan Cave is now placed by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) under its list of protected caves.

Experience Moriones Festival

If you want to discover the rich history of the coastal province, then witnessing the Moriones Festival should be on your bucket list! Held annually on Holy Week, the Moriones is a week-long celebration of the life and death of our Lord Jesus Christ. Local folks wear costumes and masks to resemble the biblical Roman soldiers. Visit the Butterfly Garden

Another fun thing to experience with the whole family in Marinduque is visiting the Barangay Uno in Gasan, the butterfly capital of the Philippines. Entering the garden is like walking into a well-kept Japanese garden. Local folks say that it will come true if you whisper your wishes to the butterfly before setting it free. Why not give it a try, right?

Hike Luzon Datum of 1911

This is one of the best tourist spots in Marinduque for those who love a little bit of adventure, as this requires a short hike. Here’s a fun fact: Did you know that when you hike the top of Luzon Datum, you’re now standing at the center of the Philippines?

It’s just a 1.8km hike from the jump-off, so beginners need not worry. If you love to see a panoramic view of the ocean while enjoying the sunset, this is the best place to visit in Marinduque! So, mountaineers and adventure seekers, you know where to go next!

Malbog Sulfuric Hot Spring Resort

Take time off and unwind at the Malbog Sulfuric Hot Spring Resort situated at Brgy. Malbog in Buenavista. The hot spring is said to have a sulfur content, perfect for skin treatment and internal problems such as menopausal symptoms and digestive disorders. There’s also a cottage available for rent if you visit huge groups.

See the beauty of Mount Malindig.

The sulfuric waters from the hot spring come from Mount Malindig, the province’s highest point. Both locals and tourists are interested in climbing the large active stratovolcano on the island of Marinduque. It is also home to wild orchids and rich flora, making this a must-hike destination.

Join the Putong Ritual and discover the local culture

We were amazed at how the locals of Marinduque welcomed their guests, just like what we experienced upon our arrival at our hotel during the Cebu Pacific event. The local women performed the putong ceremony, which is a song of thanksgiving, hope, and prayer for long life, after which we were showered with flowers as a sign of affection, and a crown was placed above our heads as part of the ritual. The Putungan originated from the Municipality of Gasan.

Dive with the Morions at Poctoy Underwater Museum

One of the newest attractions in Marinduque is the underwater museum at Poctoy white beach in the town of Torrijos. The underwater museum is one of the projects of Congressman Lord Allan Velasco in partnership with Marinduque Divers.

Eat local cuisine at Café Mamita

Foodies shouldn’t miss pigging out at Mamita’s Café beside the Boac Cathedral. This place exudes a very homey vibe and serves sumptuous local dishes from sisig, nilagang baka, laing, sizzling blue marlin, and tanigue grilled squid and Bulalo, to name a few. Don’t forget to sample their Ginataang Manakla, a local variety of crayfish abundant in Barangay Malinao, Bonliw, and Suha in Torrijos, Marinduque . Most locals drop by during lunch after visiting the church. Don’t miss out on their halo-halo!

Visit Maniwaya Island

Located in the Municipality of Sta. Cruz is the emerging beach destination, Maniwaya Island. It is famous for its kilometer-long stretch of fine white sand shoreline, where Mabuhay accommodation facilities with native cottages and watersports equipment are available along the beachfront.

How to get there

With its brand-new ATR aircraft, Cebu Pacific offers flights from Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 4 to Marinduque every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. The thrice-weekly flights will cut travel time between Manila and Marinduque to one hour from eight hours via land and Roro travel.

Getting to Marinduque

Marinduque is a small island province in the Mimaropa region of the Philippines. It is accessible by air and sea, with the most convenient way being a direct flight from Manila to Marinduque Airport or a ferry ride from Balanacan Port in Quezon Province.

Cebu Pacific Air operates daily flights between Manila and Marinduque Airport, with a flight time of approximately 1 hour. The airport is located in Gasan town, which is about 45 minutes away from the capital town of Boac. From the airport, passengers can take a tricycle or van to their respective destinations.
