WESTERN AUSTRALIA’S PERTH & SURROUNDS

Perth & surrounds.

Perth is the gateway city for most visitors to Western Australia, set on the banks of the broad Swan River. This modern city is often described as the most isolated city of its size in the Western World. A fun city where the Mediterranean climate allows for plenty of outdoor activities.

The whole region around Perth has been likened to one big holiday resort with so many attractions, great climate, miles of clean beaches and waterways, theatre, fine dining and sports of every kind and accommodation to suit every budget. A World class Casino and entertainment complex right in the heart of the city, tours, cruises, self-drive options and a year round programme of special events.

Perth and Surrounds

Discover the Best of Perth and Surrounds

My name’s Dylan Alcock. I’m a travel and lifestyle photographer working around Perth and surrounds. I grew up as a third-culture kid moving away from South Africa when I was three to live in Romania, Japan, Malaysia, Spain, Australia, and the UK, before ending up in Perth as a 25 year old.

This constant travelling as a kid made me love exploring new cultures and new countries. However, it wasn’t until I picked up a camera for a trip to Zimbabwe that I fell in love with the art of photography. Since then, my camera hasn’t left my side. I’ve continued to travel, explore and document.

Put Perth and Surrounds on your Bucket List

Perth is best characterised as the happy medium between nature and city. If you wander a couple of minutes out of the city you find yourself on a coastline of endless beaches. If you stay in the city you are surrounded by the magnificent Swan River . There’s something for everyone in Perth.

What I love most about Perth is the ability to escape – be at the beach, on a road trip, visit a winery or go on a hike. Since it is one of the most isolated cities in the world there is plenty of space to wander and get lost.

Western Australia (WA) is by far the ultimate region of Australia. There is no place in the world quite like it. If you go to the south of WA you are blessed with some of the whitest beaches in the world. Head up the coast to the north of WA and you’re surrounded by incredible red soil.

WA also has some of the best sunsets. You can enjoy a sunset spectacle almost every night, something which other states can’t boast. To me, though, the biggest attraction is the ability to go on epic road trips. With endless destinations to explore – there’s something for everyone to see.

South Perth

My Favourite Place – Margaret River

My favourite place that I have explored (so far) is Margaret River. With beaches like Meelup in Dunsborough and the surf at Surfers point, there is so much to see and do here. In addition, there is a hidden oasis along some of the beaches that allows you to swim, sheltered from the waves.

A close second favourite in Perth and surrounds would have to be Rottnest Island . I’ve been there countless times over the past two years and I still can’t get enough of it. The second anyone mentions a trip to Rotto I’m in!

Margaret River

10 Best Things To Do in Perth and Surrounds

Perth is the sunniest region of Australia which blends the best of the city with natural beauty. The city is regarded as one of the most liveable on earth – combining a laidback lifestyle with modern sophistication. Discover a region of beaches, food trucks, street art, wineries and remote islands.

1. Watch the Sunset on Cottesloe Beach

Cottesloe Beach is one of the most iconic beaches of Perth. Here you can enjoy swimming, snorkelling, surfing and sunbathing. I recommend spending the evening at Cottesloe watching the sunset over the Indian Ocean with ice cream and the company of birds singing as it sets.

Perth and Surrounds

2. Explore Point Peron and Penguin Island

Point Peron is the perfect spot to go snorkelling and explore the shallow waters. This long stretch of land at the southern end of Cockburn Sound is a popular getaway for families and friends looking for adventure. The nearby Penguin Island is a fantastic addition to Point Peron.

Perth and Surrounds

3. Relax at the Beautiful Scarborough Beach

Drive 20 minutes from Perth and discover Scarborough Beach. It’s a fantastic spot for all the usual activities such as sunbathing, swimming and surfing. Plus there are some great cafes and bars overlooking the ocean. Spend the day at the beach and enjoy a few drinks.

Perth and Surrounds

4. Day Trip out to the Awesome Rottnest Island

What’s not to love about an island paradise sitting off the coast that’s only a 40-minute trip away. Take the ferry to Rottnest Island for the day and explore the entire island. Discover quokkas, pristine beaches and plenty of amazing snorkelling spots. There’s something for everyone on Rotto!

Sunrise Rottnest Island

5. Come to Elizabeth Quay for Dinner

Elizabeth Quay is the ultimate place to have dinner in Perth. Find a world-class restaurant, enjoy the delicious cuisine and stay for the lightshow around the bridge. Located on the Swan River, this amazing destination is transforming the foreshore into a hub of activity and atmosphere. Enjoy!

6. Grab a Bite to Eat at South Perth Food Trucks

During the warmer summer months (November to April) some of the best food trucks in Australia pop up all over the South Perth Foreshore on Sir James Mitchell Park. Grab a bite to eat from one of the amazing food trucks/trailers and watch the sunset over the city on the foreshore.

7. Kayak along the Swan River

Experience the majesty of the Swan River whichever way you choose – be it on a paddle-board, kayak or catamaran. This is a great summer activity and who knows you might even run into some dolphins on the way! You can choose to experience the river by yourself or join a tour. It’s up to you.

8. Visit Kings Park and Botanic Garden

Set your alarm for an early morning wake up call. Grab a coffee and watch the sunrise at Kings Park . Afterwards, you’ll have the whole day to explore everything this area has to offer. Enjoy an afternoon picnic, take in the epic views of Perth and go shopping at the unique retailers in the park.

9. Have Lunch at Hillarys Boat Harbour

Hillarys Boat Harbour is one of the premier destinations in Perth. It’s home to Hillarys Yacht Club, AQWA (Aquarium of Western Australia), a thriving shopping district, beautiful apartments and fantastic dining options. Have lunch at one of the a la carte restaurants with gorgeous views.

10. See the Sea Lions of Carnac Island

The nature reserve of Carnac Island is a thriving habitat for the precious Australian sea lion. It’s also home to many seabirds, penguins and in the surrounding waters bottlenose dolphins. Enjoy a range of activities on the island such as wildlife spotting and fishing on the sheltered eastern side.

Perth and Surrounds

Bonus Experiences: More Day Trips from Perth

Perth is the ultimate city to base yourself for exploring Western Australia. There are so many day trips to enjoy in Perth and surrounds. Below are my favourite day trips in addition to the Top 10 Experiences I just mentioned.

  • Lancelin Sand Dunes
  • Stirling Range
  • Wave Rock, Haydn
  • Bells Rapids Park
  • Lake Clifton

Albany

Favourite Memory in Perth and Surrounds

One of my favourite memories was swimming with the sea lions off the coast of Perth at Carnac Island. The water was perfect with no hint of wind and the sea lions were in a playful mood. They wanted to play with us and so they came up really close to say hi. It was such a unique experience.

They really are remarkable animals. Definitely the puppies of the sea!

Burgeoning Food Scene of Perth and Surrounds

The food scene in Perth is definitely making waves. My favourite places are the international food trucks that can be found around the city in summer. The local cafes along the beaches are great too. If you haven’t been to Yelo in Trigg , then you are certainly missing out! I highly recommend this joint.

Best Places to Stay in Perth and Surrounds

I would recommend staying in Airbnb’s when you travel through Perth and surrounds. I’ve had some incredible hosts who often recommend experiences and hidden gems that you can’t find on travel websites. That being said, there are some amazing luxury glamping spots too.

Tips for your Visit to Perth and Surrounds

The best tip I can give anyone who is travelling to Perth and surrounds is to give yourself more time than you think you need. With so much to see and do here, a lifetime truly isn’t enough. So pick and choose where you want to go and add a day or two on the end so you have plenty of leeway.

A smaller tip would also be to not underestimate the driving time. The distances in Western Australia can’t be underestimated. Expect long road trips that take longer than you might expect. Above all, have fun and embrace the natural wonders of Perth and surrounds.

You’ll love every minute spent here in this wonderful region of Australia!

A local’s guide to things to do in Perth

Perth camel rides

Image: Tourism Western Australia

Perth is Australia’s sunniest capital city and famous for its clear blue skies, pristine beaches and casual vibe.

Here’s a local’s guide on the best things to do in Perth that make the most of the city’s natural attractions, relaxed lifestyle, as well as a few urban adventures too.

Table of Contents

Stroll around Kings Park

Things to do in Perth

Kings Park is Perth’s most famous landmark and offers the best vantage point to get acquainted with Perth city and surrounds.  Bring your walking shoes, as the 400-hectare large park is one of the largest inner-city parks in the world.

Take a walk around the Botanic Gardens for a trip around West Australia’s diverse and unique flora and fauna. Be sure to view the huge 750-year-old Boab Tree that was specially transported from Australia’s Kimberley Region.

If you’re still feeling energetic, climb the 101 steps up the DNA tower for panoramic views stretching all the way to the Indian Ocean and the Perth Hills. Find out more things to do in Kings Park here .

Perth Street Art

Perth has an increasing and vibrant street art scene that’s transforming our inner suburbs into urban art centres. Taking in the Perth street art scene is a great way to experience some of the inner city centres such as Mount Lawley, Claremont, Leederville and Fremantle and is also one of the best free things to do in Perth.

New street art scenes are constantly evolving around the city centres and some of the world’s most renowned graffiti artists have left their marks on Perth streets.

See for more on Perth Street Art for a detailed-self-guided tour that will take you to all of the best spots around the city.

Discover Perth’s beaches

Perth's best beaches

One of the best free things to do in Perth is to visit the myriad beaches along the coastline. Perth local’s boast that Perth has the best beaches in the world and it’s hard to disagree.

Some of the more popular beaches are Cottesloe, Trigg, South Beach, Leighton Beach, City Beach and Scarborough. These are all accessible by public transport, have cafes, shops and restaurants in the vicinity and offer shady areas.

Mettam’s Pool on the Sunset Strip is the next best thing to the Basin on Rottnest Island. Calm, clear waters are perfect for swimming and families with young kids. Slightly further north, 5km of sandy beach and turquoise waters await at the stunning Mullaloo Beach.

Click here for a full guide on Perth’s best beaches.

Swan Valley Wine and Food Trail

The Swan Valley is Australia’s second oldest wine growing region and makes for an indulgent day out. The region cradles the picturesque Swan River and is home to an ever-growing number of wineries, breweries, cafes, gourmet food shops, local produce and galleries.

Follow the 32km long Swan Valley Food or Wine trail and be spoilt for choice about where to stop. Even better, let someone else make the decision and take a tour instead.

Here’s a guide on how to have the perfect day out in the Swan Valley .

Dine out in Leederville

For the best things to do in Perth at night, head to the inner-city suburbs. Leederville is a vibrant inner-city suburb that makes for a perfect night out. The strip along Oxford Street comes alive with hip cafes, bookshops, pubs, bars and is a foodie’s paradise with a diverse range of international cuisine.

Highly recommended options are Ria Malay Kitchen, Duende for Spanish Tapas and Kitsch Bar.

Bar crawl in Northbridge

Perth used to be all about pubs and full-strength beer in stubbies. That all changed with new licensing laws and now Perth is increasingly spoilt for choice when it comes to stylish small bars.

For a fun thing to do in Perth at night, go bar hopping in Northbridge and discover the city’s hidden bars. Bring a map as some bars are well hidden down laneways and other urban nooks and crannies.

Try old faves like the Pica Bar at the Cultural Centre, Frisk Small Bar, Alabama Song Bar or Sneaky Tony’s – that’s if you can find the peep-hole and have the secret password.

Explore historic Fremantle

Fremantle is definitely the best thing to do near Perth. To get the most out of a visit to ‘Freo’, head to the old port town between Friday and Sunday. This is when the markets are open and the streets are alive with buskers and other street entertainment.

Take a stroll along the Cappuccino Strip, stop at a pub and have fish and chips at the Fisherman’s Wharf.

Not to be missed is a walk along the historic West End, where you’ll discover why Freo is one of the best preserved 19 th -century port towns in the world.

Find a list of things to do in Freo here .

Watch the sunset over the Indian Ocean

The sunsets are the absolute best thing about living on the west coast and come completely free. There are endless spots all along the coastline where you can enjoy the views of the sun setting over the Indian Ocean.

Do like a local, bring a picnic or fish and chips and sit on the lawn at City Beach, Cottesloe or at one of many picnic spots scattered along the coastline and enjoy nature’s daily spectacle. If you don’t want to bring your own picnic, head to Fremantle’s South Beach on Saturday evening during the summer months for the excellent sunset markets .

Paddle in the Swan River

For a fun thing to do in Perth hit the Swan River.  There are plenty of ways you can enjoy this aquatic playground. Rent a catamaran, kayak or Stand Up Paddle and see the city sights from the river.

Rental gear including catamarans is available from Coode Street Jetty in South Perth during the summer months.  About Bike Hire at Point Fraser on Riverside Drive hires kayaks and Stand Up Paddle Boards. If you prefer to stay dry, rent a bike instead and explore the city along the fantastic cycle paths along the river.

Alternatively, you can skipper your own boat on these awesome picnic boats with GoBoat.

Meet Perth’s cutest locals at Caversham Wildlife Park

Caversham Wildlife Park offers a close-up experience with Australia’s favourite native animals.

Along with the many animal displays, there are daily attractions, including the farm show where you can see sheep shearing, watch a cattle dog muster his herd, crack a whip and bottle feed a lamb.

Caversham also has daily animal feeding sessions, along with close-up encounters with wombats, koalas, pythons and an interactive farm.

Spend the day in nature at John Forrest National Park

Grab your walking shoes and hit one of many great walking trails, including the12km long Eagle View Trail. There are two waterfalls, an old railway tunnel and plenty of scenic spots, along with plenty of native birds and animals.

Bring a picnic or enjoy lunch or dinner at the Tavern. This is also where you’ll find Perth’s friendliest kangaroos. Look for them in the beer garden at the back of the tavern.

Click here for full details on John Forrest National Park.

Explore Rottnest Island

Rottnest day trip

As soon as you glimpse the aqua waters on Rottnest Island you won’t regret the price of the ferry ticket. Rottnest is home to some of the most spectacular beaches in Australia, including Instagram favourite, The Basin.

Explore the island on two-wheels and get acquainted with the cute and friendly local residents – the Quokkas. Swim at one of many stunning beaches or coves, go snorkelling and observe the entertaining seal colony at the West End.

For practical tips on how to get the most out of your day trip to Rottnest, read on here .

Hit the local music scene

Catching a live music show is one of the best things to do in Perth at night. Perth has a vibrant music scene that has produced some of the best bands and musicians in the country. Think Tame Impala, Birds of Tokyo, San Cisco, the John Butler Trio as well as the Farris Brothers from INXS and AC/DC’s Bon Scott.

That should be enough reason to catch a live show at some of Perth’s iconic music venues. These include the Rosemount Hotel in North Perth, Mojos Bar in North Fremantle, The Fly By Musicians Club in Fremantle and Amplifier Bar in Perth to name just a few.

Have brunch with a view

Locals know that going out for breakfast is as good as going out for dinner, if not better. It’s not just about eggs and bacon either. These days brunch is as diverse as the cafes serving them.

For brunch with stunning beach views head to Bib and Tucker at Leighton Beach, Odyssea or The Hamptons overlooking City Beach or The Shorehouse at Swanbourne.

Discover Penguin Island and Shoalwater Marine Park

things to do in Perth

On a sunny summer’s day, Shoalwater Marine Park located 50km south of Perth offers a great outdoor escape. Shoalwater Bay is beautifully located and is a good spot for watching wildlife including dolphins, seals, stingrays, seabirds and fairy penguins.

Rockingham Wildlife Encounters run several great tours, including swimming with wild dolphins and eco-cruises.

There’s also a ferry service to Penguin Island , which is home to the smallest penguins in the world. The island also has a nice sheltered swimming beach and is a good spot for snorkelling. See more on Penguin Island here .

What a great summary of WA. I have lived here for 35 years and perth really has some of the best outdoor activities in Australia. Our coast if breathtaking, our sand and beaches immaculate compared to many places in the world. All residents should get out and enjoy what WA has to offer.

Thanks for the great comment. Yes, we are very fortunate and there’s plenty to explore. Even for locals, there’s always something new to discover.

Best Time to Visit

One of the (many) things I love about Perth is that you can visit all year round!

Perth winters are generally fairly mild – which can mean sometimes you luck out with sunny days and 20 degrees Celsius high (or more).

However, as many of the best things around Perth are nature-based activities, the most popular time to visit is during the summer months of December – February.

tourist map perth and surrounds

Personally, I think the shoulder months of March-May and September – November are a great time to explore Perth. Prices and crowds are lower (although, it’s worth noting a “crowded” Perth is still miles behind what you would consider crowded in other cities across the country and the world!).

One thing to be aware of is the Australian school holiday periods, which can be found here .

In particular, the Christmas and New Year period, and the Easter school holidays in April, are exceptionally busy times of the year to travel in Perth. If visiting during these times, make sure to book your accommodation in advance.

How to Get Around Perth

Getting around the Perth CBD and neighbouring suburbs is fairly easy using public transport, including the free inner city network of CAT buses .

Taxis, Uber and other rideshare services are also plentiful in Perth. For my 3 and 5 days Perth itinerary, a car is not strictly necessary to get around.

However, if you’d like to explore beyond Perth, or go for a self-drive road trip to places like the Lancelin Sand Dunes, the Pinnacles Desert or even the Margaret River Wine Region, then a car will be required to get around.

For car rental hire, I recommend Discover Cars to browse and compare the best prices from different companies across Perth.

Where to Stay in Perth

If it’s your first time in Perth, I recommend staying in or near the Perth CBD for easy access to the main attractions.

  • Budget – Citadines St Georges Terrace
  • Mid Range – Art Series the Adnate
  • Apartment Hotel – Quest Mounts Bay Road
  • Luxury – Ritz-Carlton Perth

If you plan on hiring a car, parking is limited in the CBD and can be expensive. Consider staying across from the CBD in picturesque South Perth, or the inner CBD suburb of Subiaco.

  • Mid-Range – Tribe Subiaco
  • Apartment Hotel – Quest South Perth Foreshore
  • Luxury – Vibe Hotel Subiaco

I’ve included a few of my favourite hotel options above, or check out my full guide for the best places to stay across Perth .

3 Day Perth Itinerary

Day 1 – explore perth cbd and kings park.

Spend your first full day in Perth exploring the Perth CBD and the nature haven of Kings Park Botanic Garden.

This itinerary is very walkable. You can also buy a 24-hour hop-on hop-off bus ticket . This service does a loop around the Perth CBD and King’s Park every hour during the day, stopping at the main attractions and reducing the amount of walking.

Start your day with a coffee from one of Perth’s stellar coffee shops, such as La Veen King St, Standing Room Only or Smooth Operator (only open Monday – Friday).

Spend the morning wandering around Elizabeth Quay , which offers a great viewpoint looking back at the city skyline from Elizabeth Quay Bridge. You’ll also spot the distinctive arched Spanda sculpture.

Walk across the bridge to the Bell Tower – you can head up into the bell tower to admire 360-degree views from the observation deck and take part in an interactive bell chiming experience.

Book skip-the-line tickets here

Elizabeth Quay Art Trail

From here, make a beeline to Hay St Mall via London Court.

London Court is a little slice of old-English vibes, reminiscent of Diagon Alley, in the heart of the Perth CBD. Wander along and browse the small boutiques, and often you’ll find seasonal displays lining the open-air alleyway above.

At this end of London Court, keep an eye out for the clockwork display when it reaches the hour on the clock. You’re now standing on one of the Perth CBD’s two main shopping streets, Hay Street Mall.

tourist map perth and surrounds

Spend some time browsing the shops on Hay Street and Murray Street Malls.

For a guided tour of the city, I highly recommend a walking tour with Oh Hey WA. I’ve had the pleasure of joining Adie, the owner of the business, on both her Perth City and Perth Small Bar tours.

What I loved about these small group tours is that, even as a local who has lived in Perth my whole life, I discovered new things about my city!

Adie and her team of guides are very personable, friendly and informative. Their walking tours are a great way to get acquainted with Perth and discover what the city has to offer – that you won’t find in a normal guidebook!

  • Ultimate Perth Walking Tour: History, Architecture, Art + Local Insights (morning)
  • Perth Bar + Street Art Tour: Hidden Secrets, Laneways + Good Times (afternoon/ evening)

Save your feet from all the walking and join a segway tour around the river.

You’ll zoom past the Bell Tower, through Elizabeth Quay and explore one of the inner city parks with a hidden waterfall on this 1-hour guided tour.

Read the glowing reviews of this fun tour here .

In the afternoon, you can have a few options.

You could walk across to Northbridge and spend a few hours at the WA Museum Boola Bardip (tickets $15/adult), the Art Gallery of Western Australia or play a game of mini golf at Holey Moley.

Northbridge is a great spot for an afternoon drink in the sunshine – check out the range of locally brewed beers at Northbridge Brewing Co or the tucked away rooftop bar at Mechanics Institute.

Holey Moley Northbridge

Alternatively, walk or catch the free CAT bus to East Perth.

Walk across the Matagarup Bridge to Optus Stadium. Some fun activities to do include a zipline over the Swan River from the bridge or a guided behind-the-scenes stadium tour .

Matagarup Bridge over the Swan River

I’ve done the bridge climb and zipline twice now, and it’s such an exhilarating experience. You can watch a video from my experience below and book tickets here .

@tessomewhere Take 2 at Matagarup zip + climb! This time we did the express zip which has a shorter climb but still the same adrenalin pumping zip line over swan river! $99 for 90 mins #perthactivities #adrenaline #zipline #bridgeclimb #perthsummer ♬ original sound – Tess | Adventure Travel

You’ll also find the Perth Mint in East Perth, where you can learn about Western Australia’s gold rush, view the largest gold coin ever made and watch molten gold being poured into a gold bar.

Book your entrance tickets to the Perth Mint here .

In the late afternoon, make your way to Kings Park Botanic Garden . One of the world’s largest inner city parks, Kings Park is an iconic destination in Perth. Over 400 hectares in size, it is a biodiversity hotspot with untamed native bushland as well as cultivated gardens with large grassy areas.

I like to start by walking along Fraser Avenue, admiring the sweeping view of the Perth CBD and Swan River before reaching the State War Memorial that stands testament to Australians who have given their lives for this country.

tourist map perth and surrounds

Meander along past the giant boab tree, and wander across the Lotterywest Federation Walkway, a glass walkway suspended among the treetops.

The lawn near the State War Memorial and Frasers Ave is a great spot to watch the sunset. Alternatively, head down to Elizabeth Quay for a drink at The Reveley or The Island to celebrate the end of a great day out exploring the city.

A popular tourist attraction is the iconic Blue Boat Shed located on the banks of the Swan River near Kings Park. You’ll often see a line of visitors wanting to take a photo in front of the cute over-water building. Visit before or after exploring Kings Park. Discover more Instagrammable locations around Perth here.

Where to Eat

  • Petition Kitchen: Petition is one of the many dining options in the beautiful restored heritage State Buildings complex. Long Chim (Thai) and Post (Italian) are also popular options.
  • La Cholita: a funky, lively restaurant serving up some of Perth’s best Mexican in Northbridge
  • The Standard: A hip bar and restaurant in Northbridge with a delightful 2-level garden bar
  • Meat & Wine Co: sophisticated steak house in the heart of Perth’s CBD
  • Angel Falls Grill: a small restaurant serving up delicious Venezuelan cuisine in a tucked-away alleyway
  • Hifumiya Udon Noodle House: this hidden restaurant transports me back to Japan. They hand-make their udon noodles and are always buzzing at lunchtime (open for lunch only).

Day 2 – Discover the Port Town of Fremantle

Today you’ll be exploring the vibrant hub of Fremantle, about a 30-minute drive from the Perth CBD.

You can jump on the train, with the Fremantle line departing from Perth station, or take a scenic cruise along the Swan River to arrive at the historic port town of Fremantle.

Wander along the “cappuccino strip” of Market Street until you reach Fremantle Markets .

This bustling indoor market dates back to 1897 and is filled with stalls selling everything from jewellery and clothes, handmade local wares and art to fresh food.

tourist map perth and surrounds

After browsing the stalls and maybe a bite to eat, you could visit the Fremantle Prison for a tour of the culturally significant convict prison, or walk to Esplanade Park. Here you’ll find a large playground, shaded grassed areas and the distinctive bright red Ferris wheel.

This area is also home to the famous Little Creatures Brewery , an industrial brewery with a quirky and vibrant atmosphere. Try one of their many beers, or book a behind-the-scenes brewery tour.

tourist map perth and surrounds

Other things nearby worth checking out are the WA Shipwrecks Museum, the Round House (a former convict prison) and Bathers Beach House, Australia’s first alfresco beach dining (literally, dining and drinking on the beach with your feet in the sand).

tourist map perth and surrounds

From here, navigate to High St which is a hub of heritage buildings, quirky boutiques (including a record store and map shop) and many drinking and dining options.

tourist map perth and surrounds

If you’re looking for the best sunset spot in Fremantle, Gage Roads Brewery is my pick. Next door to the WA Maritime Museum, Gage Roads Brewery is a massive, industrial-style brewery serving up fresh brewed beers and delicious modern Australian bites.

You can watch the cargo ships and ferries cruise into the port while you watch the sun sink below the Indian Ocean.

tourist map perth and surrounds

  • Tonic & Ginger: delicious Southeast Asian share plates in a multi-storied venue that used to be a synagogue
  • Emily Taylor: Funky bar and kitchen serving up dumplings and other Asian fusion
  • Bread in Common: this popular restaurant is housed in an industrial warehouse space and serves modern Australian cuisine alongside artisanal bread
  • Republic of Fremantle Distillery : an urban distillery serving fresh, local produce alongside specialty cocktails

Day 3 – Visit the Rottnest Island Quokkas

Rottnest Island is one of Perth’s best day trips. Catch the ferry from Barrack St in the Perth CBD or catch the train to Fremantle for the trip across to Rottnest Island.

Read all you need to know about planning a day trip to Rottnest Island in my detailed guide here .

5 Day Perth Itinerary

Day 4 – sample the delights of the swan valley .

After a long day exploring Rottnest yesterday, today will be more relaxed but still packed with adventures. Today you’ll be exploring the Swan Valley, a region with world-class wineries and a smorgasbord of dining options located only 30 minutes east of the Perth CBD.

If you have a car, you can choose to do a self-drive tour of the Swan Valley, otherwise there are plenty of options for tours that include transport. I’ve included a few of my favourite options below.

  • Ultimate Swan Valley Food and Wine Day Trip: Indulge in some of the best wines and food the Swan Valley has to offer. Include lunch, wine tastings, a brewery stop, cheese board and chocolate tasting on this all-day tour from Perth.
  • Half Day Swan Valley Wine Tour: Visit four wineries with a cheese platter at one, as well as a stop at a boutique chocolate factory
  • Swan Valley River Cruise and Wine Tasting Trip: Travel to the Swan Valley in style with a scenic river cruise from the Perth CBD. Sample a range of local wine, cheese, beer and chocolate plus enjoy a delicious lunch at a local brewery while enjoying live commentary from your tour guide on board the vessel.

tourist map perth and surrounds

If you’re joining a tour, you don’t need to worry about planning the stops as this will all be organised by your guide. If you’re doing the self-drive option, these are some of my favourite wineries, restaurants and shops.

  • Old Youngs Distillery: this award-winning gin distillery has an incredible restaurant featuring native cuisine and unique dishes – book ahead!
  • Lancaster Estate: cheese and wine tastings in a casual rustic setting right next to the vineyard
  • Mandoon Estate & Homestead Brewery: one of my favourites in the Swan Valley, with a cellar door for wine tastings, a separate brewpub and a fine dining restaurant on a beautiful estate
  • Bailey Brewing : This popular brewpub has a fun, large kids playground – it gets very busy on weekends so book ahead if possible!
  • Sandalford Wines: One of the prestigious wine estates, and one of the oldest in the Swan Valley
  • House of Honey: you’ll find a honey shop with both honey and mead tastings in a beautiful garden setting, plus a casual cafe
  • Funk 2.0 Cidery : Casual cidery with a large range of ciders and outside tables

Day 5 – Day Trip to Lancelin Sand Dunes and the Pinnacles Desert

Time to experience another of the best day trips from Perth. Here’s a quick summary of the day, or read my dedicated Perth to Pinnacles Road Trip guide .

You’ll be driving (or joining a tour) to visit the sprawling Lancelin Sand Dunes , about 90 minutes north of Perth near the small seaside town of Lancelin.

Ride the dunes on a sandboard, or hop aboard a quad bike and cruise the dips and crescents of the dunes.

Aerial view over the rolling sand dunes at Lancelin

For lunch, head to the Cervantes Lobster Shack for a delectable lobster lunch. You can also join a tour of the Lobster Factory before or after your meal (no bookings required).

tourist map perth and surrounds

Finish the day with a stop at the otherworldly Pinnacles Desert , famous for its towering limestone structures. Explore this national park on foot, or on the loop drive that circles the Pinnacles.

Keep an eye out for kangaroos and emus!

tourist map perth and surrounds

There are two highly-rated tours that I recommend that include stops at both Lancelin Sand Dunes and the Pinnacles:

  • Pinnacles Desert Sunset and Star-Gazing Tour: Join this bus tour which first stops at Lancelin Sand Dunes for sandboarding. You’ll then head to the Pinnacles, enjoying a barbeque dinner in the middle of the desert, while sipping on local wine. See the sunset before marvelling at the clear night sky with the help of astro binoculars and a telescope.
  • Pinnacles, Koalas & Sandboarding Tour Day Trip: Your first stop will be Caversham Wildlife Park, where you can see koalas and hand-feed kangaroos. Next, travel to Cervantes for lunch and a tour of the lobster factory. The next stop will be the Pinnacles Desert, before driving over the Lancelin Sand Dunes in a custom-built 4WD vehicle. This will be an adventurous day to remember!

7 Day Perth Itinerary

Day 6 – relax at one of perth’s many beaches .

Have a relaxed day exploring some of Perth’s many beaches.

The most iconic beach in Perth is Cottesloe Beach which is a favourite for locals and visitors alike. Stroll along the picturesque coastline on Marine Parade, before taking a dip at the beach in front of the Indiana Tea House (now home to the trendy restaurant Indigo Oscar).

Spend a day enjoying the sun and sand, before watching the sunset while enjoying takeaway fish and chips on the beach.

Sunrise over Cottesloe Beach from Indiana

Another local favourite is Scarborough Beach , which hosts local markets on a Thursday night in summer and has a range of relaxed dining options along the coast.

tourist map perth and surrounds

Another great beach near Perth is Coogee Beach around 40 minutes south of Perth.

This one is a bit trickier to get to (easiest to drive or get an Uber). It’s worth the effort to get to though, as it is home to the Omeo Shipwreck, a unique snorkelling spot. Trigg Beach (north of Perth) is another popular snorkelling beach in Perth.

If the weather is looking gloomy, consider taking another day trip from Perth or spend the day exploring the sights around the CBD that you might not have had time for on Day 1.

Day 7 – Venture to the Perth Hills

The Perth Hills is an underrated region that isn’t often on the itinerary of first-timers to Perth.

However, only a short drive from the CBD, you’ll find brilliant local wineries and restaurants, serene hikes, gushing waterfalls and more.

There are so many things to do in the Perth Hills, and hiring a car is the best way to see them in a day. Otherwise, this Small-Group Bickley Valley Wine Tour is a great option that includes transport (although just note tours usually only run on weekends).

tourist map perth and surrounds

Other things to do in the Perth Hills include:

  • Stroll along the Mundaring Weir and go for a bush walk to South Ledge Lookout
  • Visit Lesmurdie Falls and hike to the base of the falls (best in winter and spring)
  • Enjoy lunch at one of the Perth Hills cideries
  • In autumn, visit Raeburn Orchards to see the stunning autumn foliage
  • Go for a wine tasting at a boutique winery (Fairbrossen is one of my favourites)
  • Watch the sunset from the Zig Zag Scenic Drive
  • Immerse yourself in nature at the beautiful Araluen Botanic Park
  • Pack a picnic and go for a hike on one of the many trails in John Forrest National Park

tourist map perth and surrounds

Alternative Option: Drive to Margaret River

Consider spending a couple of nights in the Margaret River Region exploring the many wineries, natural attractions and stunning beaches in the area. It is a 3-hour drive from Perth to Margaret River, so it’s worth spending at least two nights.

For more ideas on things to do in the Margaret River Region, check out my guide here .

It is possible to visit on a day trip on an organised tour from Perth , seeing the main sights like Busselton Jetty, an underground cave and a brewery visit. It’s a long day but at least someone else is doing the driving, meaning you can sit back and relax!

Hey! I have found your blog SO helpful in planning my honeymoon to Australia, specifically our time in Perth and Rottnest Island. Thank you so much! I have one question maybe you can help with, do you know if there is anywhere reliable we can store our bags for a few hours while we check out Fremantle? We are planning to spend our last few days in Rottnest and would love to check out Fremantle as a pitstop on our way to the airport. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi Bre! So glad to hear my guides have been useful – your honeymoon sounds like it will be incredible! The Perfect Perth Itinerary – How To Spend 5 Days in Perth, WA

If you’re visiting Perth for the first time and wondering how to plan your days, we’ve got you covered! This epic five day Perth itinerary will take you through all of the best attractions in and around the city, ensuring you don’t miss a single highlight.

Located on the coast of Australia’s south west, WA’s capital city is often overlooked by tourists who favour the bigger east coast cities like Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. I’ve been lucky enough to call this beautiful city home for the better part of a decade and let me tell you, there’s no where else on earth I’d rather live.

Life is easy in Perth. The beaches are incredible, the weather is sunny and warm (for most of the year), and the natural scenery is simply stunning. There’s also an infinite number of attractions and natural landmarks within close proximity to the city; think world-class wine regions and a paradise island only 30 min from the CBD!

Best Time to Visit Perth

For sunny and warm weather I would recommend planning your trip to Perth during the summer, from Nov – Feb. Perth sees very little rainfall throughout these months and you’re pretty much guaranteed to have blue skies and sunshine. This is ideal for hitting the beach which is one of the best things to do in Perth !

The summer can also see some extremely hot days of temperatures in the high 30’s and even 40’s. If you’re sensitive to heat, visiting Perth during the shoulder season in October or March would be a better idea.

Getting Around Perth

Perth and its surrounding suburbs are fairly spread out. If you’re spending five or more days in Perth, I would highly recommend hiring a car . This will give you much more flexibility and allow you to explore further afield as well as take day trips. Check prices and availability for your car rental here .

In terms of getting around the city, travelling to Fremantle, going to the beach, and visiting Rottnest Island, this is all easy to do via train, bus or ferry. Find more info about planning your journey and booking your tickets on the official Transperth website .

You might be interested in purchasing tickets for the hop-on-hop-off sightseeing bus. This ticket lasts for 48 hours and includes unlimited access to the double decker bus that stops at all of the city’s top attractions. It also covers your entry to the Bell Tower which includes a guided tour and the chance to ring one of the bells yourself!

Swan River Cruise

Enjoy the picturesque scenery of Perth from a different perspective. Sit back and relax with a drink and take in the amazing views as you cruise along the Swan River listening to the captain’s commentary. Taking a Swan River Cruise is a must when visiting Perth!

Cruises depart at multiple times throughout the day from either Barrack Street Jetty in Perth or Fremantle. I recommend booking this activity online in advance during peak season. Check cruise times and ticket availability here .

If you don’t get a chance to do a river cruise, a stroll along the Swan River is also a great way to take in the scenery. Make your way to the river and follow the path that takes you along the river’s edge. You can choose to walk, cycle or roller skate here. The full Swan River Loop is 10 km, you can easily do a short section and then continue on with your sightseeing. See this map for more info.

A visit to Perth is not complete without spending some time in the one of the world’s largest inner city parks. Perched high on a hill, overlooking the city and Swan River, the views from King’s Park truly couldn’t get any better.

Getting to King’s Park is pretty easy as it’s conveniently located close to the city. Catch the 950 bus from the city centre or walk for 25 minutes to reach the entrance of the park.

The Ultimate Perth Itinerary - 5 Awesome Days in Perth WA

Enjoying a spectacular sunset picnic in Kings Park

There are many awesome lookouts, walking trails and beautiful scenery making Kings Park a popular place for both locals and tourists. Here are some of the top things to see and do while visiting:

  • Go for a walk – With no shortage of walking and cycling paths to choose from, Kings Park is an excellent place to get in your daily step count. The bonus is that you’ll have a beautiful view to look at as you go. Two of my favourites are the “Law Walk” and the “Bushland Nature Trail”, see the official site for a map and more info.
  • Botanic Gardens – Showcasing the unique flora of Western Australia, this huge garden features beautiful collections of flowers and plants from all over the state. You’ll see plants and flowers growing year round but the best time to visit is during spring when the wildflowers are in full bloom. The Botanic Gardens are free and open 24 hrs per day.
  • Catch a view – One of the very best views in Kings Park is undeniably found at the Lotterywest Federation Walkway. This amazing arched bridge is suspended through the tree tops of the Botanic Gardens. It’s one of the most popular attractions in the park and an the perfect spot to capture a memorable photo.

Kings Park War Memorial

  • State War Memorial – At the top of Kings Park, this war memorial features an obelisk and a continuously burning flame. It was built in 1929 to honour all Australian soldiers who fought and died in the service of their country.
  • DNA Tower – Don’t leave Kings Park without a quick climb up the spiral staircase for yet another panoramic view. It’s the highest view point in the park and it can be reached by walking about 15 minutes from the War Memorial.
  • Festivals/Events – Through the summer there is always something fun happening at Kings Park. From outdoor concerts and movies to festivals and seasonal events, find an upcoming Kings Park event here .
  • Sunset picnic – Kings Park is hands down one of the best spots for a romantic sunset picnic in Perth . It’s been one of our go-to picnic spots for years, the scenery and views here just never get old!

In the middle of the city, between Hay Street Mall and St George’s Terrace is one of the best heritage listed attractions in Perth. Dating back to the 1930’s, this quirky alley is lined with buildings that were inspired by Tudor England.

Take a step back in time as you make your way through London Court, browsing the shops and perhaps grabbing a coffee along the way. It won’t take long to see it but it’s definitely worthy of a quick stop.

Blue Boat House

Not far from Kings Park is yet another classic Perth icon. The Blue Boat House has become an increasingly popular photography location in recent years. It’s no surprise that it happens to be one of the best Instagram spots in Perth ! At any given time of day, you’ll find people lining up to snap their very own “I’ve been to Perth” shot.

Insider’s Tip: Everyone takes photos here during the day. Visit the boat shed during sunrise or sunset to capture a more unique and dramatic scene. See our own version of the famous Blue Boat House photo below!

Heirisson Island

Located in the middle of the Swan River, Heirisson Island is an awesome spot to meet some local wildlife. This is where you’ll come face to face with the many kangaroos who call the island home. It’s also lovely spot to go for a peaceful nature walk practically in the middle of the city!

The good thing about visiting  Heirisson Island  is that it’s very close to the city centre making it easy to reach. Simply hop on the 960 bus from the Perth Busport and get off at Victoria Park Transfer Stn, Heirisson Island is a short walk away. An added bonus is that it’s free to visit!

Perth Cultural Centre

If you have some time left in the day and still keen to explore a bit more, make your way over to the Perth Cultural Centre. This open space is only a short walk from the city centre. You’ll often find various events and exhibitions held here, see their website for up to date info.

It’s also home to the WA Museum and the WA Art Gallery, both of which will give you a great insight into WA’s history and culture. The museum has a number of permanent collections to see but also hosts temporary exhibits from other countries. For example, if you visit from June – November 2021, you’ll find the fascinating “Ancient Greek History” on display at the WA Museum.

Tickets: Free entrance to both attractions however donations are welcomed.

Opening Hours: WA Museum 9:30am – 5pm daily, WA Art Gallery 10am – 5pm Tuesday – Monday

Day Two – Wildlife Park/Beach Day

Caversham Wildlife Park

You simply can’t visit Perth without getting up close to some of Australia’s most iconic animals. Perth has a few wildlife parks to choose from but Caversham Wildlife Park is without a doubt the best one. It is more expensive to visit this park, but knowing that they have extremely high standards when it comes to the animal’s care makes it all worthwhile.

Caversham is located in the eastern suburbs of Perth. It’s easy to get to from the city centre by car or Uber however public transportation is also possible, it just takes longer. If you catch the bus from the CBD, it will take just over an hour to get there and involves changing buses along the route. See Google Maps to plan your journey.

See this tour if you wish to be taken to Caversham on an organised day trip, hotel pick up is also possible with this option.

Feeding the kangaroos at Caversham Wildlife Park

The park is divided into different sections that represent each part of Australia and the animals that live there. You’ll find pretty much every type of animal that’s native to Australia: exotic birds, crocodiles, dingos, wombats, emus, Tasmanian Devils, penguins, snakes and so much more!

It’s quite a big wildlife park and easily takes half of a day to see the entire thing. Get a feel for the park and plan out your visit by checking out this map  before you go.

Caversham provides many opportunities to interact with the animals, this is where you can feed and pet kangaroos, hold koalas, and take selfies with wombats. There are also a number of daily shows and feedings to watch, check out their website for more info on events and times so you don’t miss out.

Opening Hours:  9:30am – 4:30pm daily (last entry at 3:30pm)

Tickets: $32/adult, $25/student, $15/child

C ottesloe Beach

Once you’ve finished up at Caversham Wildlife Park, make your way straight over to the beach. Spend the rest of the day relaxing in the white sand and taking a refreshing dip in the ocean. Located in the western suburbs, Cottesloe is one of the best beaches in Perth and a great place to spend a chilled out afternoon.

Cottesloe Beach is a popular spot for swimming, snorkelling, and surfing. There are plenty of restaurants and bars near the beachfront so it’s easy to grab lunch or dinner without having to return all the way to the city. You should definitely plan to stay here to watch the sunset, after all Perth is the only Australian city where you can watch the sunset over the ocean!

Make sure to bring a picnic mat with you as there is a large grassy area where you can relax and eat without sand getting in your food. Head to one of the fish and chip shops near the beach to grab some dinner and you’re set for the perfect evening! Just watch out for those sneaky seagulls who are never afraid to hop over and steal your chips.

Fremantle Prison

The only UNESCO listed building in WA happens to be located in Fremantle! Fremantle Prison dates back to the year 1850 when it was built as a maximum security prison to hold convicts from the UK. It was used continually until 1991. During that time, many fascinating and shocking things unfolded at the prison.

Learn the chilling tales of the events that took place at Fremantle Prison by taking a tour. There are several tours to choose from but the best one is the Torchlight Tour. Esplanade Park

As you make your way toward the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour, you’ll pass by the large green space that separates the city and the waterfront. Besides being a nice place to relax and have a picnic in the grass, there are a number of things to see and do here.

The Skyview Ferris Wheel is one of Fremantle’s most iconic landmarks. Take a ride in one of the enclosed red gondolas for epic views over Fremantle, Perth, and even Rottnest Island in the far distance! The Skyview Ferris Wheel runs daily until 9pm and costs $12/adults, $10/children, $10/couples.

Esplanade Park is also home to a large shaded playground, perfect to let the kids blow of some steam while you take a break in the shade. This is also where a number of events and festivals take place throughout the year. One of the most popular events is the Fremantle BeerFest which runs every year in November.

Spend the day tasting from a huge selection of WA’s best craft beer producers. There are also many amazing food trucks, live music and even ciders and cocktails (for those who aren’t into beer). Find more info and get your ticket to the next Fremantle BeerFest here .

Little Creatures Brewery

Located along the popular strip of restaurants that lines Fremantle’s waterfront, this is arguably the most popular place to dine for lunch or dinner in Fremantle. If you’re a fan of craft beer, you won’t want to miss this gem!

Little Creatures Brewery has established a name for itself, not just in WA but people all over Australia enjoy their brews. It’s such a popular spot for locals that if you visit during the weekend, it’s often hard to find yourself a table to sit at. They operate on a first come first serve basis and bookings cannot be made.

In my opinion, the beer and food (especially their pizza) is worth the potential waiting time. For those fascinated by the beer brewing process, a guided brewery tour is available to be booked online . An expert will show you around the brewery and you’ll get a chance to taste their amazing range of beers. Check tours times and availability here .

The unique wildlife on Rottnest Island is one of the things that makes this place so special. More specifically, it’s the quokkas! These tiny marsupials are completely unique to Rottnest Island and cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

Quokkas roam free all over the island and aren’t afraid to approach people hoping for a hand out. Taking a “quokka selfie” is ok but it’s important to remember that touching or feeding them is not allowed.

There are fines in place for anyone who breaks the rules and the rangers won’t hesitate to enforce this if they catch you. You can get up close to them, take photos with them but please respect them, this is their home after all!

PERTH IN 10 DAYS The Ultimate Perth Itinerary

The jewel of Western Australia gets more daylight than any other Australian capital city, with the sun out for at least 8 hours a day.

Summers are hot and winters are fairly mild in this Mediterranean climate. Perth is famous for its uncrowded beaches, where you don’t have to fight for space. White sand contrasts with aquamarine water that’s so transparent, you can see through it. This is the west coast, so the sun sets over the ocean – a sight you won’t soon forget.

Enchanting as this is, there’s so much more to appreciate than sun and sea. Perth ranks as one of the most liveable cities in the world and it’s a hot destination for visitors.

Hopping into a car and driving around Perth is the best way to sample its treasures. There are so many options, how do you narrow it down? If you’re feeling spontaneous, you could print out a map, put on a blindfold, grab a handful of pins and leave it to fate. Or you could follow our guide that we’ve carefully prepared!

Ready for the ride? Buckle up.

TOUR ITINERARY Here's how our itinerary works

You can follow our guide by driving to each location and staying there for the night. We’ve made sure you’re not driving for more than an hour from one location to the next. Click here to see all 10 days.

Alternatively, you may wish to remain based in the CBD and drive back and forth to select destinations. This is possible because the wineries, beaches and nature reserves aren’t far from the city. One of the reasons why people are drawn to Perth!

We’ve provided two distance measurements for every destination. The first measures the distance from the previous location (A to B to C). The second measures the distance from Perth city to each location (A to B and back to A).

The Aquarium of Western Australia (AQWA) shows off Western Australia’s spectacular sea creatures, by taking you on an underwater journey. You don’t have to go to the Great Barrier Reef to behold the beauty of coral. AQWA offers one of the largest living coral reef exhibits in the world! Located on Hillarys Boat Harbour, the privately-owned Aquarium is open daily from 10am to 5pm. Expect to spend around four hours at AQWA, if you want to visit all of the exhibits and unwind at the licensed cafe. There are also free activities and events during the school holidays.

MUST READ itinerary guide: Aquarium Of Western Australia (Hillarys Boat Harbour)

Day 5 Overview :

Fremantle is known for its maritime history, Victorian architecture, Australian football team (the Dockers) and remnants from Australia’s days as a British penal colony. Fremantle Prison, which housed convicts from the 1850s to 1991, now features re-created cellblocks. Take a trip back in time to see what life was like for convicts locked away in Fremantle Prison during the 1800s. Thousands of men built their own jail, after being shipped to Australia from Great Britain. The solitary cells and gallows set the scene for an unbearable system of punishment that lasted for around 140 years.

Rottnest Island

We doubt you’ll regret taking a day trip to Rottnest Island (nicknamed “Rotto” by locals) for a snorkelling tour. There’s nothing like exploring the turquoise bays to appreciate the colourful marine life that call this underwater playground home. Expect to come face to face with coral fish, lobsters, octopus, eagle rays, moon wrasse and other sea creatures. If you prefer to snorkel without a tour, you can catch a ferry, hire snorkel gear and go at your own pace. This guide highlights the best snorkelling spots, depending on your experience level. Exploring the island by bicycle is also great!

Day 7 Overview :

Penguin island.

Imagine spending the day feeding penguins, meeting rare sea lions and drifting over limestone reefs in a glass bottom boat. Sounds good, right?   If you have young children, this is the best way to explore the glistening waters of Shoalwater Islands Marine Park. In fact, it’s perfect for aspiring David Attenboroughs of all ages! The protected area hosts the world’s smallest penguins (the largest number in Western Australia). But these tiny birds aren’t the only star attraction here. You can expect to encounter sea lions, nesting pelicans, ospreys and other sea life too.

Day 8 Overview :

Cottesloe Beach

It’s sacrilegious to visit Perth without strolling down the white sandy shore at Cottesloe beach. For more than a century, locals have spent their weekends soaking in the sun while swimming in the calm, aquamarine sea. This is an ideal snorkelling spot, since the coral is close to the shore. If you simply want to appreciate the ocean breeze, throw down your towel in the elevated grassy area and enjoy a picnic in the shade. You can also enjoy copious amount of live music, cycle the track from Cottesloe to HIlarys, dine at many awesome cafes and restaurants, and try your hand at surfing.

MUST READ itinerary guide: Take A Dip At Cottesloe Beach

Day 9 Overview :

Exploring Perth Zoo is a great way to spend the final day of your road trip. Not only will you see lions, orangutans and other animals, but you’ll get the chance to learn about conservation and sustainability. Put aside some time to check out their award-winning breeding program for threatened native Australian animals too. Aim to get there early, so you can visit all the exhibitions. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes, because you’ll be doing a lot of walking. Perth Zoo also features some of the most beautiful gardens in Western Australia.

Getting Around Perth Without a Car: Locals Advice

' src=

As a tourist, getting around this picturesque city is an essential aspect of making the most of your visit. In this guide, I’ll take you through various transportation options, providing valuable information to help you explore Perth easily.

This post may contain affiliate links (of companies I book through). This means I may receive a small commission if you book through them. You can read the disclaimer for more information.

Get Around Perth by Public Transport

Public transport is an easy and reliable way to get around Perth without a car. Transperth buses and trains offer accessibility features to accommodate passengers with mobility challenges.

Transperth Buses offer a convenient way to explore the city. To start, check the route maps, plan your trip, and hop on board. Don’t forget to have your SmartRider card ready to tap on and off.

Navigating Perth has never been easier, thanks to the reliable and efficient Transperth train system. With a network spanning the city and its outskirts, you can explore Perth and its stunning surroundings conveniently and comfortably.

Fremantle Line

This line connects Perth city to the popular tourist port town of Fremantle. It stops at Claremont (for shopping) and Cottesloe, one of Perth’s best beaches .

Mandurah Line

The Mandurah Line takes you on a scenic journey, connecting Mandurah to the heart of Perth.

Joondalup Line

For those in the northern suburbs, the Joondalup Line offers an excellent route into the city. Leederville is on this line, and you can get to Scarborough Beach with a bus connection from Glendalough station.

Armadale/Thornlie Line

The Armadale Line connects the southeastern suburbs to Perth’s city centre. Catch this line for the Crown Metropol & Towers Hotels Perth (Burswood station).

Midland Line

The Midland Line takes you eastward from Perth, stopping at Guildford .

Airport Line

Perth’s newest line runs from Claremont to High Wycombe, stopping at Perth Station. This is the easiest public transport option to and from Perth Airport .

Train Frequency and Timings

Transperth trains run at varying frequencies depending on the time of day and the specific line. During peak hours, early morning and late afternoon, trains operate more frequently to accommodate the higher volume of commuters.

Check the official Transperth website for up-to-date schedules, station information, and service announcements.

Public Transport Tickets

The easiest way to get around Perth on public transport is by using a SmartRider card, or you can buy a cash ticket from the bus driver or at a train station machine. However, you need the correct amount of money as no change is given. Follow these steps to buy your SmartRider card and begin your journey around the city:

  • Locate a Retail Outlet: Visit one of the many authorised retail outlets where SmartRider cards are available. These outlets include Transperth InfoCentres, train stations, and other participating retailers .
  • Choose Your Card Type: There are two types of SmartRider cards: standard and concession. If you are eligible for a concession fare (e.g., students, seniors, or pensioners), choose the appropriate card type.
  • Provide Identification: If purchasing a concession card, ensure you have the required identification documents to prove your eligibility. This may include a valid student ID, concession card, or other relevant documents.
  • Load Credit: Decide how much credit you want to load onto your SmartRider card initially. You can choose from various amounts based on your travel needs. Remember that this initial credit will be available for use on public transportation.
  • Activate and Use: Once you have your SmartRider card, activate it before using it for travel. To activate the card, touch it to a SmartRider reader on a bus or train. Follow the instructions displayed on the reader to complete the activation process.
  • Top-Up: When your balance gets low, you can easily top up your SmartRider card with additional credit. This can be done at Transperth InfoCentres, online, or at designated SmartRider top-up machines.

With your SmartRider card, you’re ready to explore Perth with ease. Tap on and off the SmartRider readers on buses, train stations, and ferries to pay for your fare.

Transperth Zone & Line Map

This Transperth map shows where the lines run, what zone the stations are in, and where the stops are in relation to Perth city and suburbs.

Perth’s Free Transit Zone (FTZ)

Travel by bus and train within the FTZ is free – The Free Transit Zone logo on bus stops identifies the zone’s boundaries. However, if you travel outside the zone, you must buy a ticket.

Peth’s Free CAT buses

The free CAT (Central Area Transit) bus services provide a convenient mode of transportation within the city’s central area. With several well-planned routes covering key attractions, shopping districts, entertainment hubs, and business centres, the free CAT buses have become integral to Perth’s public transportation network.

Five CATs operate in the city, three in Joondalup and one in Fremantle.

First Sunday Free

Travel on Transperth is free on the Sunday of every month for all SmartRider users. However, it does not apply to late-night services after midnight on Saturday.

Getting around Perth

With free public transport within the city centre, getting around Perth is quick and easy.

By Mark Sariban

Perth is an easy city to get around via public transport, and the city’s great weather means walking and biking are options all year round. Here’s how to get around Perth with ease.

Transport in Perth

Tourists enjoying Rottnest Cruises, Rottnest Island, WA © Tourism Western Australia

Rottnest Cruises, Rottnest Island, WA © Tourism Western Australia

  • Airport Transfers
  • Accessibility

Perth has an extensive public transport system of buses, trains and ferries. To use the network, it’s recommended that you purchase a Transperth SmartRider card . You can purchase a SmartRider card at Perth Airport, Transperth InfoCentres and SmartRider retail outlets . Your SmartRider card entitles you to a fare discount and a daily maximum spend.

  • Before using Perth’s public transport options, you’ll need to load the SmartRider card with some money to cover your fares.
  • To start your ride, tap your card on the reader when you board your selected mode of transport and be sure to tap again when you disembark.

Perth is serviced by Perth Airport (PER) to the east of the city centre. There are several options for reaching the city from the airport’s T1/T2 and T3/T4 terminals.

  • From the T1 and T2 terminals, take the Airport Line train from Airport Central Station to the city. You can use the SmartRider card to pay for this airport service.
  • From the T3 and T4 terminals, take the Route 292 bus to Redcliffe train station. Then take the Airport Line train or a Route 940 bus to the city. You can use the SmartRider card to pay for this airport service.
  • You’ll find taxi ranks and rideshare pick-up areas at the front of each terminal – simply follow the signage. The journey from the airport to the city takes around 20 minutes.

In Australia, airlines, trains, buses and ferries have accessible options for people using mobility devices, as well as services for hearing and vision impaired travellers.

  • Perth Airport provides special assistance for people with disabilities and can help with baggage, getting around the airport, and getting on and off the plane.
  • The majority of buses, trains and ferries have accessible options – check the Transperth website for information on using public transport before your trip.

Getting around Perth on public transport

Perth’s rail network is a great way to visit attractions across the city and reach the surrounding suburbs. Within the city centre, there is a Free Transit Zone for trains travelling in the area between City West, Elizabeth Quay and Claisebrook stations. To take advantage of the free fares, you must tap on and off with a SmartRider card.

You can also use bus services without paying a fare in the Free Transit Zone. Be sure to tap on and off with your SmartRider card. Use the Transperth JourneyPlanner to map your route.

  • You can also use a free Central Area Transit bus to get around the city.

With a SmartRider card, you can catch a public ferry across the Swan River. From Elizabeth Quay Jetty, a ferry departs for Mends Street Jetty every 15–30 minutes. This is a great way to get to Perth Zoo .

Getting around Perth by car

High St, Fremantle, Perth, WA © Tourism Western Australia

High St, Fremantle, Perth, Western Australia © Tourism Western Australia

Driving in Perth is easy and safe, but you may find it’s easier to use a combination of taxis, rideshares and public transport to get around town.

If you do opt to rent a car at the airport or in the city, you may want to check whether your hotel charges a daily parking fee.

  • The City of Perth operates numerous off-street car parks across the city.

Perth is serviced by several major taxi companies, including Swan Taxis , 13cabs and Black & White Cabs .

  • You can hail a taxi on the street or at taxi ranks in built-up areas.
  • Supervised taxi ranks operate on Friday and Saturday night on William Street in the city centre, and on Melbourne Street in Northbridge.
  • You can also book a taxi by phoning individual companies, downloading their apps or using the GoCatch app.

Some major ridesharing platforms operate in Perth, including Uber and Ola , as well as local operator GoCatch .

Tip: Female travellers can also book a ride with Shebah , a rideshare service with all-women drivers catering to women. (Adult men can use the service if they need to transport a child who requires an approved child safety seat.)

  • Cycling & scooting

The Perth Explorer hop-on, hop-off bus is another great way to see Perth’s attractions. You can purchase a one-day ticket or two-day ticket.

The Little Ferry Co runs a regular electric private ferry service along Swan River between Elizabeth Quay, the On the Point dining and entertainment precinct and Optus Stadium.

  • You can also travel to Rottnest Island from Perth via two private ferry services, the Rottnest Express or the SeaLink ferry .

A great way to see Perth is on a cruise on the Swan River , a beautiful waterway winding its way through the city centre.

  • Captain Cook Cruises operates scenic cruises on the Swan River as well as longer journeys to the nearby port city of Fremantle.
  • Wild West Charters offers daily Swan River tours as well as cruises to Carnac Island, off Fremantle.

With separated bike paths and a network of routes along the banks of the Swan River and through the city centre, it’s easy to get around Perth by bicycle.
