How To Apply for an Australian Tourist Visa as a Group
Group application can be made if you are traveling as a group (e.g. traveling with relatives or friends).
However, please note that each member of the group traveling to Australia must lodge/submit a separate visa application. This includes children and family members.
Including the person in your group application does not mean that the person has already applied for a visa. Again, they need to lodge their application separately.
Fortunately, you can use your ImmiAccount to apply for you and for your friends or other members of your family traveling with you. This way, you can apply on their behalf without the need to create multiple accounts.
Australian Tourist Visa Group Application: A Step-by-Step Guide
The steps in lodging your application via ImmiAccount is the same, except on the following:
a. On Page 2 of the 19 pages on Group Processing, click “Yes” on the question “Is this application being lodge as part of a group of application?” (see screenshot below).
A pop-up screen will appear asking you to create a group name and group type (e.g. Group Name: Dela Cruz family, Group type: Family).
You will also be given a group ID. When other members of the group will lodge their application, they can link up the group ID.
b. On page 5/19, click “Yes” on the question “Are there any other persons traveling with the applicant to Australia?”
A pop-up screen will appear asking you to write the names of the person traveling with you to Australia.
c. Once you are finished filling out your own application and submitting/attaching your supporting documents, you can now create another application by clicking “New Application” ( see step 2 of the online application process ) in the home page and repeat the process all over again until all the applications of the group are lodged/submitted.
For paper-based applications via VFS Global , all members of the group should submit their applications at the same time.

Australian Visa Information
Unless you are an Australian citizen, you will need a valid Australian visa to enter the country. New Zealand passport holders can apply for a visa upon arrival in the country. All other passport holders, regardless of age, must apply for a visa before leaving home. You can apply for a range of Australian visa types, including tourist visas and working holiday visas, via the ETA app or on the Department of Home Affairs website.
There are different Australian visa types available for travellers to Australia. Knowing which Australian visa to apply for depends on the length of your stay, your passport and the purpose of your visit. You’ll also need to meet certain financial and medical requirements, be outside of Australia when applying and maintain health insurance for the duration of your stay.
Electronic Travel Authority visa (subclass 601) This visa allows you to visit Australia as many times as you want, for up to a year, and stay for three months each visit. This visa is available to passport holders from a number of countries and regions, who live outside Australia. A step-by-step guide on how to apply is here .
All ETA-eligible passport holders must apply for an ETA using the Australian ETA app. Agents can assist you in the application process, but you must be physically present as a live facial image is required.
eVisitor (subclass 651) This is a free visa for multiple visits to Australia for tourism or business purposes for up to three months at a time within a 12-month period. This visa is available to passport holders from a number of European countries and it cannot be extended.
Visitor visa (subclass 600) The Visitor visa allows you to visit Australia, either for tourism or business purposes. It is open to all nationalities. Generally, a period of stay of up to three months is granted, but up to 12 months may be granted in certain circumstances. Applicants will have to pay a fee to submit their application.
The application process may differ depending on which visa you need.
You can only apply for the Electronic Travel Authority visa (subclass 601) through the Australian ETA app. A step-by-step guide on how to apply is located here .
For other visas, you can apply online by creating an ImmiAccount and completing the application process. Be sure to submit your application well in advance of your travel date to allow enough time for processing. You may be asked to provide further supporting information. You will be notified in writing if your tourist visa is approved and it will be digitally linked to your passport. For more information on different visa types, and Australian visa requirements including how to apply for an Australian visa, visit the Department of Home Affairs website.
If you are already in Australia and hold a valid Electronic Travel Authority visa (subclass 601) you can extend your stay by applying for another visa, such as a Visitor visa (subclass 600). An eVisitor (subclass 651) cannot be extended.
See the Department of Home Affairs website for details.

Updated: February 7, 2024

Australia no longer accepts paper applications for the visitor visa. All applications must be lodged online through the Australian Government Immi Portal.
The Visitor Visa has subclass 600 in Australia’s visa documentation and the subtype we’re interested in is the “Tourist stream (apply outside Australia)”.
Quick summary:
- Eligibility: All nationalities are eligible
- Validity: Valid for 6 months, 1 year or 3 years with single or multiple entries
- Duration of stay: Generally, 3 months allowed stay, but up to 6 or 12 in some cases
- Visa fee: Visitors visa fee is 190 AUD
- Processing time: 50% of applications are processed in 7 days and 90% in 21 days.

Visitor (subclass 600) visa in the Tourist Stream
Visitor (subclasses 600, 651, and 601) visas.
- Travel to, enter, and stay in Australia for up to 12 months;
- Study in Australia for up to 3 months;
- Engage in business visitor activities; and
- Apply for another visa to remain in Australia (such as a Partner visa).
- Visitor (subclass 600) visa in the Tourist Stream;
- Visitor (subclass 600) visa in the Sponsored Family Stream;
- Visitor (subclass 600) visa in the Business Visitor Stream;
- Visitor (subclass 600) visa in the Approved Destination Status Stream;
- Visitor (subclass 600) visa in the Frequent Traveller Stream;
- eVisitor (subclass 651) visa; and
- Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601) visa.
Overall, the Visitor (subclass 600) visa is for tourists, people who wish to visit their family in Australia, and people who wish to visit Australia for business purposes.
The Visitor (subclass 600) visa is divided into 5 different streams:
Each different stream has different eligibility criteria. You need to know which stream to apply for, depending on the reasons for, and the circumstances surrounding, your visit to Australia.
The Department of Home Affairs will only decide your Visitor (subclass 600) visa application based on the eligibility criteria of the selected stream. You will not be considered for another stream. For example, if you don’t meet the eligibility requirements of the Visitor (subclass 600) visa in the Sponsored Family Stream, no other stream will be considered, and the visa application will simply be refused.
Therefore, you must be careful about which stream you lodge your Visitor (subclass 600) visa in.
If you wish to visit Australia for tourism purposes, or to see an Australian citizen or permanent resident who is your parent, spouse, de facto partner, child, brother or sister, the Visitor (subclass 600) visa in the Tourist Stream may be an option for you.
You could also apply for the Visitor (subclass 600) visa in the Tourist Stream if you wish to:
- Visit friends, or other relatives,
- Study for less than 3 months, or
- Stay in Australia for more than 3 months.
However, you will not be eligible for the Visitor (subclass 600) visa in the Tourist Stream if the visit is for:
- Business purposes, or
- Medical treatment.
Can I apply for the Visitor (subclass 600) visa in the Tourist Stream?
You meet the genuine temporary entrant criteria.
Visitor visas are primarily for allowing you to stay in Australia temporarily, for reasons such as:
- Visiting friends and family in Australia;
- Touring Australia;
- Entering Australia for business visitor purposes; and
- Studying for less than three months.
You cannot do the following things while on a Visitor visa:
- Live in Australia long-term; or

Therefore, the Visitor visa has what is called Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) criteria. The GTE criteria requires the applicant to show that they have a genuine intention to stay in Australia temporarily for the purposes for which the Visitor visa was granted.
The Department of Home Affairs will consider a range of factors to decide whether you are a Genuine Temporary Entrant.
Many Visitor visas are refused on grounds that the applicant did not meet the GTE criteria.
I want to migrate to Australia permanently. Can I apply for a Visitor visa?
You could still be granted a Visitor visa to enter Australia even if you intend to apply for a further visa once arriving onshore, to eventually migrate permanently. An intention to apply for another visa after entering Australia on a Visitor visa does not necessarily disentitle you from lodging, or being granted, a Visitor visa.
For example, you may have already stated an intention to apply for a further visa after arriving in Australia in a previous travel exemption application. You may have already lodged a Partner visa or Work visa but want to lodge a Visitor visa so that you can enter Australia while it processes.
However, you should be cautious about what you write in your Visitor visa application. You will need to use specific language that carefully addresses the GTE criteria, to ensure that your Visitor visa application is not refused.

I am truly thankful that I found Visa and Citizenship Lawyers online
I am truly thankful that I found Visa and Citizenship Lawyers online via a Facebook group when my partner and I were separated for over two years during the border lockdowns. My partner and I decided to engage Adam and his team in July 2022. Right from the start, our lawyer was very engaged in our case. He always answered our questions promptly, clarified issues for us patiently, and most importantly, he guided us around the insufficient relationship evidence we had due to our long separation and pointed out errors we had written down inadvertently. The entire process of gathering over countless documents to prove that our relationship is genuine and ongoing has been arduous, stressful, and emotional too. But through the entire journey, I am comforted by the fact that we have a capable lawyer guiding us and standing behind us to ensure that we were on the right path. I was at peace knowing that we have a capable, confident, and experienced team to ensure that our application is as watertight as possible and that we did not make any mistakes. I always knew that the visa grant is not in our lawyers’ hands. But the Visa and Citizenship Lawyers team helped us put together the best and strongest possible application, and they did an excellent job. I am grateful for them and I recommend them highly.

AUSTRALIA VISA GROUP APPLICATION
A vacation is always more enjoyable when you are traveling with friends or family, which is why you may be interested in a visa group application . Now, if you choose Australia as your destination, the first thing you need to check out is which type of travel document you need to be able to cross the border . While multiple types of visas are available, we suggest that you look into whether or not you are eligible for an electronic visa. It would be a lot easier when it comes to the application process.
And to complement the whole information, we brought you this article so you can know what to do before applying.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How many tipes of australian e-visas are there.
When we say ‘electronic visa’ we are either referring to an [Australia e-Visitor] or an Australia ETA . Which one you can apply for depends on your nationality. While some nationalities are eligible for one or the other, it is possible to qualify for both, in which case you choose the one that is most convenient for you.
How do I check if I'm elegible to apply for an Australian visa?
To check out if you and your friends or family qualify for an electronic visa, you can use iVisa’s Visa Checker Tool . You can find it on the homepage. Access the tool, and you will see two drag-down menus. In the one on the left, you have to select your country of origin while in the one on the right, you have to choose Australia. If you are eligible for an Australia e-visa, you will be redirected to the application page. If not, you will be provided with contact information for the nearest Australian embassies.
As far as the Australia visa group application goes, iVisa allows multiple applicants on the same application. However, you need to keep in mind that each applicant is analyzed separately. Just because you and your friends apply using the same application process, it does not mean all of you will be approved. The requirements are checked for each individual. Not for all of you as a group.
What is an Australian ETA?
This is the type of visa that offers Australia, and is based in the ETA system, which was introduced in 1996. It provides you authorization to travel to Australia and is electronically linked to your passport.
What are the requirements to apply for the Australian ETA?
If you are not familiar with iVisa, you should know that we provide a smooth and fast application process. But before you engage in that, you should make sure that you and your travel companions meet the requirements. We assure you that there is nothing to be concerned about since they are all easy to get your hands on. Here is what you will need:
- Valid passport – each applicant needs to have a valid passport that maintains its status for at least another 6 months from the date of arrival in Australia. Failure to comply leads to a denied application.
- E-mail address – you will receive a copy of you Australia e-visa in your e-mail inbox, which is why you need to submit a valid address. Even if you undergo an Australia visa group application process, one address will suffice.
- Means of payment – you need to pay for your visa and for iVisa’s services using one of the approved methods. You can use a credit or debit card, but PayPal, Alipay, and WeChat are accepted as well. Again, one set of payment details is enough.
After you and your travel companions make sure that you fulfill all the requirements, you can move on to the application form . This process is not very different than the one for a single applicant. The only different is that you must push the ‘Add applicant’ button and then insert the personal information of your travel companion. The bigger the group, the more applicants you have to add.
What are the processing times and cost for this Visa?
As you might know, getting a visa from a consulate takes a lot of time, acquiring one online is faster than ever.
