The trip was amazing...
The guides were informative and made interesting stops along the way during our transfers. We added the tour of the Sacred Valley and saw the Temple of the Sun, which was a highlight after being at Machu Picchu the previous day. We saw even more of the Inca's amazing architecture and terraces.

Nature in Peru
Peru is a megadiverse country, and the sanctuary of many of the world’s species of animal, bird and plant life, including a large number of endemic species. From the Altiplano to the Amazon Basin , the country’s diverse geography and accompanying wildlife makes it a paradise for nature lovers. The Amazon Rainforest in Peru, known for its heavy rainfall and tropical, humid climate, is home to a plethora of weird and wonderful animals species such as the pink river dolphin, found in the Amazon River , jaguars, giant otters, and primates, along with an impressive one-third of the worlds bird species. The national bird is the bizarre Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, whilst the mighty Andean Condor is the highlight of Peru’s Colca Canyon , a deep river canyon in the south of the country where viewpoints such as the Cruz del Condor allowing onlookers to watch the flight of huge Condors , the largest flying bird in the world. The uninhabited Ballestas Islands, located off the coast of the port city of Pisco , is home to large populations of sea lions, pelicans, Peruvian boobies, and Humboldt penguins, and is a popular day-trip destination for travelers on a vacation package to Peru. Aside from the country’s rich wildlife, Lake Titicaca stands out as an incredible natural attraction, owing to its immense size and altitude, securing it the title of the world’s highest navigable body of water and the largest lake in South America. Tour packages to Peru all-inclusive offer travelers a chance to discover the great variety of the country’s bountiful nature in one exciting trip.
History of Peru
Peru’s history can be traced back to the 4th century BC and to the ancient societies of the Chavin, Moche, and the Nasca. The most well-known era of Peruvian history came later, in the 15th century with the enigmatic Inca civilization, which emerged as a powerful state in this period. Growing out of their capital in Cusco , this revered civilization started as a small ethnic group of Quechuas , but soon their influence expanded and incorporated their neighbors under the great Emperor Pachacuti . The Inca Empire eventually controlled most of the Andean region, stretching into modern-day Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina, and are thought to have had a population of approximately 16 million inhabitants, who were encouraged to worship the Sun God, Inti and practice human sacrifice as a means to appease the gods. This mysterious civilization did not last for long, as by 1532, Spanish conquistadors had captured the Inca Emperor in the Battle of Cajamarca , marking the beginning of the end for the Incas. The emperor was later killed and a long conquest ensued, resulting in many deaths for the indigenous community, caused by both disease and warfare. Spanish victory came in 1572 , with colonization and the destruction of much of the culture, monuments, religion, and heritage of the Incas following shortly afterward. Spanish language, culture, and Catholicism replaced the indigenous beliefs and way of life, although even today, populations continue to speak in their native languages, such as Quechua. Most travelers on a Peru vacation are excited to discover the lost ruins of the Inca Empire , such as Machu Picchu, and to understand the values and traditions of this iconic civilization.
Culture in Peru
With a population of approximately 32 million, made up of a variety of ethnicities, Peru has a diverse culture, ranging from Spanish influences, as seen in the language and architecture, to indigenous traditions as demonstrated in the varied folklore and musical styles and dances, which often include references to ancient beliefs surrounding spirits and the Sun God. The indigenous communities are also well known for their arts and crafts, such as the brightly colored Andean clothing, with their intricate embroidery and vibrant patterns. The different regions of Peru possess their own unique influences and traditions; in the highlands of the Andes you can expect to see folklore displays with flute and drum music, ritualistic dance, and masks, whilst down in the Amazon , tribal influences are more evident. In the coastal cities, there is an obvious Spanish character, both in the cuisine, terraced cafes, and architecture. In contrast, travel through the Sacred Valley and you may feel as if you have been transported back in time, as you pass through the traditional villages of Pisac and Ollantaytambo, with their authentic markets, artisan textile weavers, Quechua- speaking communities and monolithic temple ruins, considered sacred to the inhabitants. Despite the modern feel of the coastal capital of Lima, you are never far from making contact with the ancient traditions and culture of the country’s earliest civilizations.A trip to Peru will allow you to walk in the footsteps of the Inca’s, get up close to some of the world's most diverse and unique wildlife, uncover the secrets of Machu Picchu and the Nazca Lines and realize your dreams of navigating Lake Titicaca. A paradise for the most intrepid travelers, a tour of Peru is a must-do bucket list experience.

Best time to visit peru.
Peru is a fascinating country with four distinct geographical regions. Not many countries can offer beaches, mountains, rainforests and deserts on one visit. These distinct regions offer something for everyone, which is why most Intrepid tours operate all year round.
June, July and August are considered the driest months in the Highlands and Amazon basin and are optimal for hiking and river journeys. However, even during the rainy season in the Amazon, the rains only fall for a few hours at a time. In the Andes, the rainy season can sometimes just mean a bit of overcast weather.
Remember that the Inca Trail is closed for maintenance in February, although there are other treks to Machu Picchu which are available at this time.

Culture and customs
Like many other South American nations, contemporary Peru is a rich mix of the modern and the ancient. In the highlands, where most of the population is Quechua or Aymara (descendants of the Incas), people speak their local language, wear traditional clothes, follow Inca traditions and chew coca leaves. Most lead agricultural lives and there is a great deal of poverty.
This is a stark contrast to the European -influenced coast, which is considerably wealthier and mixed with Europeans, Mestizo (mix of Spanish and indigenous), Afro-Peruvians, Japanese and Chinese immigrants.
Cultural festivals offer fascinating insights into the ancient customs of Peru that have been carried on from Inca times, with centuries-old food, clothing, song and dance playing an integral role in these celebrations.
What unites the country is a reverence for religion and family, as well as a love for soccer, or futbol , as it’s called here.
Eating and drinking
Peruvians take their food seriously. Whether you’re in a village or a large city, your taste buds will thank you for visiting this South American nation.
Peruvian cuisine draws on a mix of Andean, Spanish, African and Asian influences. Stews and soups made with potatoes (Peru grows more than 4,000 varieties!), corn and quinoa are common, particularly in the highlands. Japanese-inspired seafood dishes and chifas (Peruvian-Chinese fusion) restaurants are also popular along the coast.
The cuisine is meat-heavy, but vegetarian options aren’t hard to come by - particularly dishes featuring avocados which grow abundantly throughout the country.

Foods to try in Peru
Peru's national dish is made with fish marinated in lime juice, onions, salt and chili peppers. It's typically served with chunks of corn on the cob and sweet potato. Cevicherias in Lima do it best.
Adventurous eaters should add cuy (guinea pig) to their must-try list. Roasted and usually served whole, it’s a popular staple in the highlands.
3. Lomo saltado
This beef or alpaca stir-fry is a popular chifa dish found across Peru.
4. Pisco sour
Made by mixing pisco, the national brandy, with lime juice, egg whites and sugar, this creamy and zesty cocktail goes down a treat.
5. Coca tea
Rumored to help with altitude sickness, this tea made from coca leaves is drunk by locals all over the Andes region and is hailed for its 'medicinal' properties.

Geography and environment
Peru is home to a diverse range of landscapes, including parts of the Amazon Basin, the Andean mountain range and Lake Titicaca. Not to mention areas of tropical savanna, desert, cloud forest and mangroves. Peru also has a long stretch of coast along the Pacific Ocean.
The Pacific Coast alternates between narrow bands of desert and fertile valleys, while the Andes cut through the center of the country, separating the coast from the jungle. Machu Picchu, Cusco and Puno are all located in the Highlands region.
History and government
Early history.
Archaeological evidence indicates that early life in Peru started up to 11,000 years ago, with nomadic people living a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. Organized civilizations based on land cultivation appear to have been established sometime around 6000 BC.
Over the centuries, Peru has seen many different civilizations rise and fall, grow and decline and evidence of these ancient civilizations can be found all around the country today, with the Nazca Lines being one of the most enigmatic examples.
However, the Incas lay claim to being one of the most famous and revered empires of all. Spanning from 1438 to 1532 AD, the audacious Inca Empire was responsible for one of the world's most impressive archaeological ruins – Machu Picchu.
Recent history
Military coups and regional disputes have dominated Peru's more recent history. The period between 1960 and 1990 saw lots of political instability and economic difficulty. With world commodity prices leveling out, Peru's agriculture-based economy suffered, as did its population who were largely reliant on farming.
New leadership in the 1990s and beyond has led to economic reforms and trade promotion, which has driven economic growth.
Celebrating the centenary of the re-discovery of Machu Picchu in 2011, Peru continues to enjoy widespread international attention for its cultural and historical riches.

Peru's capital is home to unexpected treasures. Dig beneath the city's surface to uncover pre-Columbian temples, a touch of elegance and a huge dose of modern distractions; like the cafe-rich district of Miraflores. Lima is also world-renowned for its incredible food scene.

6. Arequipa
The White City, as it's affectionately known, is spectacular. Surrounded by canyons, volcanoes and deserts, the location is perfect for exploring Peru's wild side. But the true beauty of the city is in its buildings, built from white volcanic rock.
7. Colca Canyon
While the canyon is a dramatic sight (it's twice as deep as the Grand Canyon), it's a glimpse of the elusive Andean condor that will really get your heart racing. With a wing span of 3.2 meters, this bird doesn't just glide, it soars.

Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are much more fun.
Pedal along Lima’s incredible coastline, making your way through local areas and go on a cycling adventure to the epic Sacred Valley.
Spot exotic flowers, birds and mammals while enjoying a canoe ride down the mighty Amazon River.
Everyone gets a window seat while riding on the Vistadome train. The clear roof and windows allow maximum viewing for all.
Will I experience altitude sickness in Peru?
Most people can start to feel the effects of altitude at over 6561 feet (2000 m) regardless of age, gender or fitness level. While our leaders have basic first aid training and are aware of the closest medical facilities, it is very important that you make yourself aware of the cause and effects of traveling at altitude, monitor your health and seek assistance accordingly. It’s important to take it easy, drink plenty of water and speak to your group leader at once if you feel unwell.
We recommend seeing your doctor if you have any health concerns before undertaking the trip. Particularly if you have a pre-existing medical condition or take any medication.
Is Peru a LGBTQI-friendly destination?
While it might be common to see rainbow flags displayed throughout the Andes, this is in fact the flag of the Inca Empire and not a gay pride flag. Peru is a conservative, Catholic country where LGBTQI-rights are still developing. Many members of the LGBTQI community don’t publicly identify themselves and generally Peruvians will tolerate homosexuality on a ‘don’t-ask-don’t-tell’ basis. While Lima may be more tolerant towards LGBTQI-travelers, it’s advised that you should exercise discretion when traveling in country areas.
For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.
Does my trip to Peru support The Intrepid Foundation?
Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Peru directly support our foundation partner, Awamaki.
Awamaki empowers indigenous women in Peru with education and job opportunities. They offer lessons in quality control, product development and technical skills training for women artisans in rural Andean communities. Donations from our trips support the growth and development of their programs to lift more women into financial independence.
Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.
Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?
Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Our top 5 things to do in Peru
Our Peru guided tours will reveal the best of Peru, from the mysteries of Machu Picchu to ancient Andean weaving and vibrant local markets.
Larco Museum
Located in an 18th-century vice-royal building in Lima, the Larco Museum houses an excellent collection of pre-Columbian artefacts. You’ll take a journey through Peru’s history, with chronological galleries that display 5,000 years of pre-Columbian history, including ceramics, jewellery, crowns, masks, garments and gold vases.
One of the top museums on the continent, Museo Inka is an incredible showcase of the Inca Empire. You can spend hours immersing yourself in the world of the Incas, with rooms full of crockery, textiles, jewellery, goldwork, models, ancient mummies and the world’s largest collection of queros (ceremonial wooden drinking vessels).
Gold Museum of Peru
The Gold Museum of Peru is a fantastic display of Peruvian gold craftsmanship. There are thousands of items from centuries of Peruvian history, including the earflaps and bracelets of the Vicus, the belts and earrings of the Frias, the masks and wristbands of the Nazca and the crowns of the Chancay.
Best museums in Peru
Our guided trips to Peru will reveal the country’s rich history through the top museums, from ancient Peruvian goldwork to the wondrous world of the Inca Empire.
Chifa is a Peruvian word used to describe a Chinese and Peruvian fusion style of cooking. Influenced by a wave of Chinese immigration in the late 19th century, chifa is now one of the most popular types of food in Peru. We recommend trying Pato Cuarto Tiempos and Arroz Chaufa.
Anticuchos can be traced all the way back to the Inca Empire, and today they’re one of the most beloved dishes found in street stalls and restaurants all over Peru. They’re a tasty meat skewer usually made with beef, and they’re served with bread or boiled potato on the end of the skewer.
Causa Rellena
A traditional potato dish of Peru, causa rellena is made from layers of spiced yellow mashed potatoes, tuna, chicken, avocado, black olives, mayonnaise and hard-boiled egg. This delicious dish was first made by women for the soldiers during the Pacific War in 1879, when food was hard to come by.
Best food in Peru
Peruvian cuisine is wonderfully diverse and our Local Specialists will show you the best places to try everything from traditional meat skewers to Chinese style chifa.

Ancient, Intriguing, Amazing!
Peru is one of South America’s premier destinations and not just because of its status of the land of the ancient Incas, the ruins of Machu Picchu and the Peruvian Andes; it’s also full of many cultural, historical and archeologically significant sites. But it is also known for its world-renowned food scene. Higher end restaurants are popping up everywhere with cuisine influenced by Latin America, Europe and even the Amazon and everyone is taking notice.
Destination Must-Sees
Machu Picchu:
Peru’s impressive 15th century Inca ruins are located high in the stunning Andes Mountains. Much is still unknown about this site that is the most well-preserved evidence of the urban Inca Empire. The Incas were without a written language, therefore, there are no records left behind on how it was created, its uses or why it was abandoned.
Lake Titicaca & the floating islands:
This area is home to the Uros people, a group of indigenous people (pre-dating the Incas). They live on breathtaking Lake Titicaca’s 42 floating islands. They believe that the lake was where the world was created and consider it sacred. Recently a large temple was discovered submerged in the lake, and the Uros people are fighting exploration for fear of the effects of disrespecting the temple will bring.
This capital of the republic of Peru was originally named the ‘city of kings’ after the three wise men of the Bible, and later changed to Lima. You’ll find ancient sites and colonial architecture in this now modern city. The people are warm and hospitable and the food is delightful. The city has been awarded the world’s top food travel destination four years in a row.
The former capital of the Inca Empire, and was considered at that time to be the center of the world. The city is now an urban center of religion and government with charming streets, historic buildings and bustling squares. The most fascinating building in Cuzco is the Coricancha, known as the golden enclosure and the most sacred of all Inca sites.
Destination Must-Dos
Ollantaytambo:
A little, ancient town in the western end of the Sacred Valley, it is the best surviving example of Inca town planning. The town is divided into blocks of homes with only one entrance that leads to a central courtyard. This town was a great feat for ancient times as the stones used to build the town came from the opposite side of the river, requiring massive efforts from the people.
Sacsayhuaman:
Located on the outskirts of Cuzco, these ancient ruins sit atop a mountain leveled by the people of the period. Massive walls surround this sprawling complex. In the center lies a mysterious circular stone structure thought to be a solar calendar. The complex surprisingly has a water reservoir, storage cisterns, ramps, citadels, and underground chambers. Experts believe it was a fortress or former home of royalty.
The Sacred Valley:
Also known as Urumbamba Valley, the Sacred Valley of the Incas contains many intriguing remains of Inca villages – including mummies! Its climate and fertile plains have drawn settlers to this rare fruitful location in the high Andes since ancient times. This former route to the Peruvian jungle was also a buffer zone protecting settlers from incursions from the Antis jungle tribes.
Plaza de Armas:
In ancient times, this city square was home to an Incan palace and a venue for festivals and religious ceremonies. After the Spanish took over in the 16th century, the palace was demolished and two churches were erected here flanking the square, which was then used to conduct military exercises. Now, it holds a historic charm as most of the buildings you will see here date back to the 1700s.
Expert Advice
Go shopping in the world renowned Pisac Market. Open every day, you will find hundreds of individual vendors from the local villages who sell everyday products and unique handmade items you won’t find anywhere else.
Taste the amazing ceviche. This popular Latin American dish of marinated fresh raw fish spiced with varied peppers and seasonings is “cooked” with citric juice (lemon or lime). Simply divine!
Sit down for a traditional meal. At a Pachamanca (earth oven) dinner that was popular with the Inca people, the food is layered, placed over hot stones and buried in the ground to cook for hours. It is a true cultural experience.

Land of the Incas. Start your Peru tour in the coastal capital, Lima, and see the upscale districts Larcomar and Miraflores, visit the colonial Plaza de Armas and Lima Centro, tour the Larco museum’s collection of pre-Columbian art, or try a pisco sour and fresh ceviche in hip Barranco. Outside of Lima, head to the Sacred Valley in the Andean Highlands, the center of the ancient Inca Empire, to explore key archaeological sites such as Ollantaytambo, Maras salt mines, and the terraces of Moray. The Incan capital, Cusco is known for its Spanish colonial architecture built over Inca stonework, in particular Santo Domingo Convent, built on top of the Incan Temple of the Sun. From Cusco explore the mystical Incan citadel of Machu Picchu, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. In the south, stay in the town of Puno to discover the world’s highest navigable body of water, Lake Titicaca. On the west coast stay in Paracas, and cruise out to the Ballestas Islands, a marine national park, then take a scenic flight over the enigmatic Nazca Lines—only visible from the air.

What to see in Peru
From coastal deserts, to the Andes Mountains, to the Amazon Rainforest Peru is filled with wonders. Hidden Incan ruins on terraced mountaintops, mysterious Nazca Lines, unique animals, and breathtaking landscapes await you.
Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the icon of the Inca Empire, and “New World Wonder” found in Peru. A 15th-century stone citadel nestled in the cloud forests of the Andes Mountains, a trip to Peru isn't complete without seeing this historical site for yourself.
Amazon Rainforest
Your eyes will widen as you step into the largest jungle in the world. The Amazon Rainforest houses countless species of plants, birds, fish, mammals, and insects. Stay in a comfortable all-inclusive lodge near the Tambopata Research Center in Puerto Maldonado or take a cruise on the Amazon River from Iquitos as you explore the sights and sounds of pristine nature.
The Inca Trail
The Inca Trail is one of the most famous trekking routes in South America. From Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley to the Sun Gate at Machu Picchu, the Inca Trail takes you 26-miles along 500-year old pathways once reserved for spiritual leaders and royalty. The trail only permits 500 people per day (including guides, chefs, and porters) so Inca Trail permits can sell out 6-months in advance.
Cusco is the gateway to Machu Picchu and was the capital of the Inca Empire. Impressive archaeological ruins like Sacsayhuaman, Qorikancha, and various Inca temples surround the area offering endless opportunities for exploration. The monumental Inti Raymi festival is held in Cusco every year in June.
Lake Titicaca
As the highest navigable lake in the world, Lake Titicaca offers some of the world's most stunning sunsets while its waters make for panoramic views of the otherworldly Uros and Taquile floating islands. Believed to be the birthplace of the mighty Inca civilization, Lake Titicaca is a cultural and natural wonder in Peru.
Sacred Valley
The aptly named Sacred Valley is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful landscapes you'll pass through on your Peru tour. Adventurers can zip line or thrill in white water rafting tours. Visit the multi-hued Maras salt mines, explore the Ollantaytambo ruins and Pisac market, or embark on the Classic Inca Trail. Rest easy in scenic Sacred Valley hotels overlooking the mighty Andes Mountains before moving onwards to Aguas Calientes and a tour of Machu Picchu.
The capital city of Lima is the ultimate destination for foodies. Alongside modern skyscrapers visit pre-Incan ruins like Huaca Pucllana, explore award-winning food, the Basilica and Convent of San Francisco, government palaces, the historic UNESCO World Heritage city center, a boardwalk overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and artsy bohemian districts. Shop, eat and enjoy a Pisco sour in this lively city.
The Nazca Lines
The Nazca Lines are gargantuan geoglyphs and geometric shapes carved into the arid desert landscapes. They draw in travelers with their grand scale and mystery. Predating the Inca Empire, the Nazca Line geoglyphs are an example of prehistoric art and archeology. Make your own interpretations of their purpose as you soar over, or get a birds-eye view from the observation tower of these magnificent artifacts that reveal stories of civilizations long gone.
Colca Canyon
Colca Canyon is one of the deepest canyons in the world and offers spectacular views and stunning photos. The lush valley, terraced mountains, natural hot springs, and larger-than-life Andean condors soaring overhead make this a worthwhile stop on your tour of Peru.
Arequipa is a charming colonial town that doesn't feel like the second-largest city in Peru. Nicknamed the white city after the white volcanic stone used in the construction of the city. Arequipans are proud of their unique regional cuisine and invite you to taste the difference. Stone carvings, early cave paintings, and perfectly preserved mummified remains call to lovers of history while views of El Misti Volcano, the white-stone basilica Cathedral in the historical center, and gardens in the city of Santa Catalina Monastery intrigue lovers of beauty.
Paracas National Reserve
Paracas National Reserve is a unique coastal desert ecosystem brimming with migratory birds, ocean-kissed rock formations, and sea lions resting on every imaginable surface. Choose from activities like ATV rides, bike tours, and boat trips to the Ballestas Islands or lay on the restorative beaches overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Visit intriguing museums with some of the most well-preserved artifacts of the Paracas culture. As one of the first National Reserves in Peru, this protected park is an emblem of Peru's beautiful coastal landscape.

Do Inca Expert tours have specific start dates?
No, our Peru tours can start any day of the year. Our trips are fully customizable; you can choose the start and end date of your trip, the specific destinations you want to see, the hotels you prefer, and the tours you want for a unique experience.
How much time do I need to see Peru?
Give yourself at least 4 days in Peru to avoid being affected by altitude sickness when visiting Machu Picchu. Most visitors exploring the iconic sites of Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu spend between 7 - 10 days in Peru. If you want to add destinations like the Amazon Rainforest, Lake Titicaca, Arequipa, or the Nazca Lines, allot 2-4 days for each destination depending on the destinations and tours you want.
How do I get to Machu Picchu?
After arriving at Lima's Jorge Chavez International Airport, take an hour and a half flight from Lima to the city of Cusco. In Cusco, a scenic train ride will transfer you 3 hours and 15 minutes to the quaint town of Aguas Calientes at the base of Machu Picchu. A 30-minute shuttle bus ascends you to the main entrance of the Machu Picchu citadel. You can also opt to hike one of the famous treks to Machu Picchu from Cusco or the Sacred Valley like the Inca Trail, Lares Trek, or Salkantay Trek instead of the train.
We recommend you pace yourself and arrive at Machu Picchu gradually to avoid being affected by altitude sickness. Spending one or two nights in Cusco will acclimate your body to the high altitude and result in a more enjoyable experience at Machu Picchu.
When is the best time to travel to Peru?
The best time to visit Peru is during Peru's winter months between May and September. This is the dry season in the Andes which offers favorable weather patterns for the most popular sites in Peru like Machu Picchu, Cusco, the Inca Trail, and the Amazon Rainforest in Puerto Maldonado. The prime time to visit coastal Lima is during Peru's summer months between December and April to enjoy the warm summer sunshine and coastal beaches.
Do I need a visa to enter Peru?
Travelers from the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the European Union, and select other countries do not need a tourist visa to enter Peru. Do note that all travelers must have a passport that is valid for more than six months after your departure date. Upon arrival at Lima's Jorge Chavez International Airport, Peruvian Immigrations will stamp your passport and mark the number of days you are permitted to stay, typically 90 days.

Is Peru safe?
Yes, Peru is a safe tourist destination to travel to. Travelers should exercise regular caution by keeping expensive items in your hotel safety box, keeping an eye on personal belongings, and being aware of your surroundings in crowded areas like markets.
Our Top Pick hotels are all located in safe, convenient locations and come equipped with safes for storing your valuables.
For safety information regarding Covid-19, please review our updated post about coronavirus in Peru.
Consult your doctor and visit the CDC Peru website for more information about vaccination recommendations and requirements in Peru.
Should I go to Lima?
We think - yes! Lima houses something for every kind of traveler, world-renowned gastronomy that brings travelers specifically to Lima, a UNESCO downtown historic center, top museums like Larco Museum, art galleries, shopping malls overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and adventure activities like paragliding over the Lima skyline or surfing. Since you'll be landing at Lima's Jorge Chavez International Airport anyway, why not add on an extra day in Peru's capital?
Contact an Inca Expert travel advisor to see if Lima would be worth adding to your Peru trip.
What language do Peruvians speak?
Spanish is the primary language spoken in Peru as a result of being colonized by Spain in 1533. The indigenous languages of Quechua and Aymara are also official languages of Peru that can be encountered more often in rural areas. Even though English is not widely spoken in Peru, your guides, hotel personnel, and the use of a language translator like Google Translate will make your time in Peru easy.
All Inca Expert tours are done in private with English-speaking local guides.
Can you drink the tap water in Peru?
No. Tap water in Peru is not safe to drink unless purified or boiled. Travelers should purchase bottled water. You can also utilize refill stations with boiled or filtered water often available in your hotel lobby. Boiled drinks like coffee and tea are safe to drink.
What is transportation like on Inca Expert's Peru tours?
Inca Expert prearranges all transportation for your Peru tour to give you complete peace of mind. Private, clean, and roomy H1 or Sprinter vans will meet you at your hotels or airport and bring you from A to B. Choose between the Luxury Hiram Bingham train or Vistadome Train to Machu Picchu. If traveling from Lima to the Nazca Lines or Paracas, a VIP bus with large seats and ample leg-room will be reserved in your name.
Do I need to buy a voltage converter/plug adapter for my Peru trip?
You may need to bring a voltage converter and electrical plug adaptor for your electronics when traveling in Peru. Peru uses 220-volt electricity, instead of 110-volts. If your device does not have built-in dual voltage (110V/220V) you will need an adaptor so your electronics do not surge. Most mobile phones, laptops, and cameras have this built-in, but be sure to double-check before plugging in. Most electrical outlets, like the ones in top-rated hotels, are now designed to support both the American flat-pronged plug and the European round-prong plug, but if you plan to charge your devices offsite from your hotel, it will be handy to have a Type C plug adapter just in case.
Can I use ATMs and credit cards in Peru?
Yes. ATMs are abundant in major cities but generally charge a $3-$6 fee to your debit card to use the machine. Locations include BCP, Scotiabank, Interbank, BBVA Continental, and more. Credit cards are widely accepted in Peru with VISA being the major credit card provider. Always keep some Peruvian soles on hand because some locations offer discounts for cash, and local markets and street vendors only accept soles.
How much do I tip?
It is customary to tip in Peru for exceptional services as you'll receive on a tour with Inca Expert. The exact amount is up to your discretion, but we recommend:
Guide: Half-day private tour - 30-35 soles ($8-$10 USD) Full-day private tour - 50-60 soles ($14-$16 USD)
Driver: Half-day private tour - 5 soles ($1.50 USD) Full-day private tour - 10 soles ($3 USD)
4-Day Inca Trail/ Multi-day Trekking tour: Guide: 60-80 soles per person ($16-USD 22) Chef: 115 soles collective tip (USD 30 collective tip) Porters: 100 soles per porter collective tip (USD 25 per porter collective tip)
Servers: 10% of the total bill
What is the exchange rate?
The exchange rate for US dollars (USD) to Peruvian Soles (PEN) is currently $1 USD to 3.77 PEN. Money can be exchanged at an exchange house (casa de cambio) in any destination in Peru though bigger cities like Cusco, Arequipa, and Lima will have more options to find the best rates.
Will I experience symptoms of altitude sickness on my Peru tour?
40-50% of travelers experience minor symptoms of altitude sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness, like shortness of breath, fatigue, and dizziness when traveling in high altitude destinations in Peru such as on the Inca Trail, in Cusco, Arequipa, and Lake Titicaca. Symptoms of altitude sickness generally alleviate after 24-48 hours in altitude. Best practices for minimizing its impact on your trip include taking the time to acclimate, drinking lots of water, resting, avoiding alcohol, and eating light non-fatty foods upon arrival at altitude.
Consult with your doctor before traveling to high altitude destinations.

Peru travel & tours
Cradle of ancient empires.
Cradle to the vast Incan Empire, the largest in pre-Colombian America, Peru's power and gold attracted the Spanish conquistadors who used it to fund their own vast empire in the Americas. As a result, colonial gems like magnificent Cusco were built on Incan foundations, making for a fascinating hybrid culture. Peru is peppered with Incan sites, but none so famous as the "lost city" of Machu Picchu, whose breathtaking image seems to grace every brochure and travel book. Peru has been blessed with natural gifts as well: a huge chunk of Amazon rainforest falls within its bounds, and visitors can hike through jungle, trek in the Andes, and surf the northern beaches all in the same week. Cap it off with Lake Titicaca, one of the highest lakes in the world, and you've only just begun to scratch the surface.

Since 2005, Planeterra has been working with the Ccaccaccollo community to develop a women’s weaving cooperative. G Adventures groups are able to visit this community as part of the Sacred Valley Tour. Here they meet the women and learn about all the stages of the weaving process: hand-spinning the wool, dying the wool using natural dyes, and participating in a weaving demonstration. Travellers are also given the opportunity to purchase high quality textiles directly from the women who made them. Today, more than 55 women are part of the association, constantly learning new methods of production to make items that our travellers find useful for their trips, while also maintaining the traditional weaving methods to produce textiles made from llama and alpaca wool.
Parwa is a restaurant owned by the Huchuy Qosqo Association, a community-based tourism enterprise developed by Planeterra and G Adventures with co-financing from the Multilateral Investment Fund of the Inter-American Development Bank Group. All income earned by the restaurant is used for investment in social projects for the community. The ingredients used in the restaurant are bought directly from the local farmers, providing a local market for direct sales. Parwa Restaurant opened in March 2014 and has an average of 1,500 travellers per month, mostly from G Adventures. Employees have monthly salaries, health insurance, pension funds, and other labor benefits. Over 25 micro entrepreneurs received technical assistance and funds to establish new businesses to supply the Parwa restaurant or sell their goods to our travellers who visit the Huchuy Qosco community.
The best ways to pay for services in Peru
It’s common to pay with card, but cash is more widely accepted and probably your best bet. You can take out money at ATMs — they’re easily accessible, open on weekends, and allow you take out local currency (Peruvian Soles) and USD. We recommend using local currency so if you’re looking to exchange cash, it’s better to do it in the big cities rather than towns or tourist attractions because they generally have better rates. We also recommend using credit cards in restaurants, department stores, and supermarkets. If paying with a card, VISA is more generally used but Mastercard is accepted too.
Tips on tips
Some reasonable suggestions on how to tip the staff
When leaving a tip for your server in a restaurant, the standard 10-15% is fine.
Bar Service
People in Peru normally do not tip in bars, but if you’re feeling a little generous, anywhere between 5-10% is acceptable.
Tour guides
$ 5 usd/day.
When tipping the tour guides, it is recommended that each passenger contributes $5 USD/day or roughly $15 USD - $25 USD for treks that are three to four days long.
Trekking guides, porters, drivers, cooks
It is recommended that every passenger contributes about $50 USD towards the trekking guides, porters, drivers, and cooks.
Hotel concierge / cleaning / staff
$ 2- $ 5 usd.
Tipping hotel service is also not a common practice in the hotels we use, but anywhere between $2 USD and $5 USD is fine.
The price of a cab ride is normally negotiated before the trip starts, and the tip would be included in the agreed upon rate.
Other services
$ 1- $ 3 usd.
Drivers for included tours can be tipped typically between $1 and $3 USD.
Packing for Peru
Most people automatically assume that the weather is hot in South America, but because of the higher altitude in the Andes, the temperature can feel quite cold, especially at night. We recommend using a backpack for your convenience, or a medium-sized suitcase if you prefer. A daypack is also essential for carrying everyday items. Space is limited on transportation, so there is a limit of one main piece of luggage per person. You will be responsible for carrying your own luggage.

Electricity and power supplies in Peru
The entire country of Peru runs on 220-volt currents and uses two types of electrical outlets — one that accepts two-pronged plugs with flat, parallel blades (Type A), and another that accepts plugs with two round prongs (Type C). However, many Peruvian electrical outlets are designed to accept both types. If your appliance has a different plug attachment, you can buy a universal plug adapter that’s inexpensive and easy to carry around with you. Before you plug in any appliance that you’ve brought from home, make sure it can handle it. A great way to kill a 110-volt appliance is to fry it at 220 volts.

Luxury Cruises to Peru
The breathtaking country of Peru is a land of vast coastline, steep mountains in shades of green, buzzing cities, and extraordinary antiquities. A luxury cruise to Peru will take you to the cosmopolitan capital of Lima, sprawling along a long line of cliffs pounded by the Pacific, with intriguing ruins to explore within easy reach.
Pisco, sandwiched between the jagged Andes, the desert, and the ocean, is rich in wildlife, from the sea lions, boobies, and pelicans of the Ballestas Islands to the diverse bird life of the beautiful Paracas National Reserve, a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site.
Choose an extended expedition to the Galapagos Islands with Celebrity, and you could also explore the wonders of Machu Picchu, the glorious old city of Cuzco and the beautiful Sacred Valley, in the shadow of the serrated, snow-capped Andes. Discover Peru on a luxury South American cruise with Celebrity Cruises.
Peru Cruise Highlights
Cutting-edge cuisine.
Peruvian chefs offer a fresh, exciting approach to food, using ingredients that have been in the country’s cuisine for millennia. Don’t miss a chance to try ceviche, fresh sea bass marinated in lime juice with salt, onion, and hot chilies. You’ll also find rich, meaty dishes, from spiced beef skewers to roast guinea pig, a delicacy here. Everywhere you go, you’ll be offered a Pisco Sour, the national drink, which is Peruvian brandy with lime, sugar syrup, frothy egg white, and bitters.
Incredible Antiquities
Peru is rich in spectacular man-made wonders, from the incredible desert drawings of the Nazca Lines to the mysterious “candelabra” carved into the bleak cliffs of the Ballestas Islands, near Pisco. There are archaeological sites to admire close to Lima, from the temples and pyramids of the pre-Columbian Pachacamac Oracle Temple to the seven-story adobe pyramid of Huaca Pucllana, an astonishing remnant of the sophisticated pre-Inca culture that thrived here between 200 AD and 700 AD.
Machu Picchu, Cuzco, & the Sacred Valley
The snowy Andes tower over the lush Rio Urubamba Valley, known as the Sacred Valley; this was once the heart of the Inca empire. Even higher in the mountains, at a dizzying 11,200 feet, is the glorious old city of Cuzco, a maze of cobbled squares and lavishly decorated cathedrals. It’s the gateway to Machu Picchu, which is the prize of travel to Peru for many. Hemmed in by sheer cliffs and often draped in ethereal mist, this Inca citadel is surely one of the most captivating places on earth.

Good to know
Faqs - booking peru flights, do passengers need a visa to travel from new york to peru.
Yes, U.S. citizens entering Peru do need a tourist visa. However, it is issued for free at the port of entry into Peru; passengers do not need to obtain one prior to leaving the United States. They are required to have a valid passport that doesn’t expire within six months of the entry date.
Are there non-stop flights from New York to Peru?
Yes, there are year-round direct flights making this route, operated by LATAM Airline. These flights depart out of John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and arrive at Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM). There are also seasonal direct flights operated by United Airlines out of Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).
Which is the best airport to fly into to go to Machu Picchu?
Machu Picchu is one of the most visited sites in Peru, a 15th-century Inca citadel high up in the Andes mountain range. The closest airport is Cusco Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ). Nonetheless, most of the flights coming from New York have a layover in Lima before going to Cusco.
Which is the best way to get to the city center from the main Lima Airport?
The most common area to stay in when visiting the city of Lima is generally the neighborhood of Miraflores. To get to Miraflores from Jorge Chavez International Airport (LIM), there is a bus company operating direct routes, the Airport Express Lima. Passengers can expect to pay about 32 PEN (8 USD). There is also a public bus that goes to the airport; however, it can be difficult to navigate, especially with a lot of luggage. For a taxi to the city center, passengers can expect to pay more or less 70 PEN (18 USD).

What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care when looking for a flight from New York to Peru?
Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you all the options when flying to Peru from New York up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. You can then pick the flights that suit you best.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Peru
- Morning departure is around 9% cheaper than an evening flight, on average*.
- When booking flights from New York to Peru, look to fly into the main Peruvian hub, Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM) in Lima, the country’s capital. There are more route options and it’s somewhat centrally located in Peru.
- If you’re visiting the south of Peru, it may be more convenient to take a flight to La Paz in the neighboring country of Bolivia. It’s near the border of Peru and is famous for housing Lake Titicaca.
- When planning a trip to Peru, you’ll have to count on exchanging some USD into the local Peruvian sol (PEN). You can do this at the currency exchange desks at the international arrivals halls of the main airports, including Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM).
- Even though there are direct flight options between New York and Peru, there are plenty of routes that tend to be more affordable with one layover. These flights depart from either LaGuardia Airport (LGA) or Newark Liberty Airport (EWR) and are operated by Spirit Airlines.
- Some airports have services to help passengers relax ahead of long hauls, including the one from New York to Peru, which can be considered stressful. For instance, passengers can loosen up with a massage or spa visit before their flights out of John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).
Top 5 airlines serving from New York to Peru
I'm a larger, athletic guy (6'2", 260lbs powerlifter) and I found the seats incredibly uncomfortable with minimal leg room, especially in a window seat. Now, I full understand that being smaller may change my view but even if I was 80lbs less, my legs would be the same size and I was sandwiched between my seat and the seat in front of me.
Seat back monitors and outlets were dead and not working.
The crew, food, and entertainment were all good. But my screen had some sort of bug where if I turned it off, it would turn back on after 2-5 minutes. At full brightness. It made it very hard to get any shut-eye on the overnight flight. Also, the older Boeing plane, while nicely cared for (and no doors fell off 😅👏) doesn't have the nice air quality of newer planes. So I felt a bit greasy by the time we landed in Sweden.
Service was good for such a short flight. Small plane but smooth flight.
The flight was delayed but we got to our final destination.
Uncomfortable seats on 14 hour flight. Mediocre food. On time and great crew.
The helpful attitude of the staff, and being a wheelchair passenger everyone was helpful and understanding. The trip was made comfortable by the upgraded seat which was given without my request, that was a great surprise. Thank you Delta.
Everything went well with the flight. But one of the flight attendants had on inappropriate pants. She had on an old worn out pair of sweat pants. The back seam was unrivaled and should not have been worn for work. If I had not seen her in the airport with the standard type of luggage, I certainly would not have thought she was working for Delta. Not a good look at all for representation.
Great!! I haven’t had a bad experience with them.
The plane was one hour late cause they were doing some reparations with us on the plane no mention I was in the first seat and the door was open the entire time with 8 degrees! The plane was totally dirty no mention old ! The staff was nice but no put together, the attention to details and passenger experience is missing and i always travel first !!! Is better the lounge than the plane! KLM/air France every details is taken care maybe you need a creative creator or experience client need asap was terrible and not memorable for the price that I payed very dissatisfied
Copa performed as expected for the amount of money I was willing to spend for the flight; it wasn’t exceptional but it was not bad in any way either. The crew was good; friendly and straightforward. The food was airplane food, so no expectations there and the entertainment was lacking but that was my fault for owning an IPhone with a charging port that’s not compatible with the rest of the world. I’d fly Copa again.
Left my bags in origin city on a business class ticket , spent about 2-3 days in the same clothes plus the flight .
the planes are not modern there are no phone chargers
As usual, the flight with normal legroom was not very comfortable, but the second flight was much better because we had paid for extra legroom. It was very nice to check our bags without an extra fee.
LOCKED MY BAG WITHOUT CONSENT. Had to have my zippers cut upon arrival in Costa Rica.
No air in the middle rows. Had a hard time breathing. Was dying of heat.
Not very good, they nickel & dime you for better seats & pay extra for the checking in bag, bad service all the way around
Flight from Lima to São Paulo didn’t have USB plug to charge the cellphone.
It was a good experience, the flight was a little too long & the food was ok
Check in of my luggage which needed to be paid for was excellent. Thanks to Nora
As usual, LATAM tried to rip me off as a Gringo. They ignored the fact that having paid for my assigned seats, I was entitled to one free luggage per person, up to 10kg, and tried to charge me USD40 per item. While they ripped me off by $160 on my outbound flight (4 luggage pieces, which should have been free), I vehemently protested this time around. Note that they only request this from gringos, not from Spanish speakers. LATAM behaves like a racist extortion organization.
This airline is full of junk fees. After paying to get my kids to sit with me, we were asked at the gate to check in our roller bags and pay $40 for each one. Peruvian passengers all took their roller bag in the plane. I don’t appreciate airlines who spot the gringos to tax them more.
No water for a 5 hour flight entertainment not working seats with little room for knees when person in front of me reclined kept bumping my knees.
I don't think anyone actually reads these comments, so I won't spend much time on this submission. If you want to talk, you know how to reach me. The D/FW manager of Avianca (self-identified), Juan Calderon, insisted I buy an onward ticket from San Salvador even though I have diplomatic status in El Salvador and live here. It cost me $1,393 and Mr Calderon would not let me make the ticked flexible so I could get a refund. He went out of his way to be rude to me. He gave me seat 32K -- windowless window seat in the last row and did not offer to let me upgrade even though there were plenty of seats. I have flown well over a million miles in my life and this is the worst experience I have ever had. I would like a refund on the ticket I was forced to buy. Just awful!
This is the Spirit of Latino travel. And don’t even get me started on customer service.
Awful. I checked in online and there was no option to pay for baggage, at the airport when I checked in my baggage was received and Iwas not charged. When I got to LA during the boarding process I was told I didn't pay for baggage, the crew resolved I was let in the plane. When I got to my final destination my baggage was not there. It took me two days to receive my baggage. Bad service ever!
There was no food or drink service, couldn’t even get a glass of water for free. It was a long and expensive flight to not offer food or beverage on the plane.
It is better at the jfk than my home country. It was very easy and everything was on time.
There is no food. There is no in-inflight entertainment. The seats are cardboard. The airline is a living hellscape.
My experience was amazing! They helped my elderly mother board on early through a wheelchair and were accommodating to have us sit together since our seats were in different locations. When landing at the airport in GUA they were very helpful with full of hospitality.
No complimentary snacks food, beverage (not even water), pillow and blanket on a 6 hours long flight (including economy comfort). A low form of nickeling an diming. Lost a recurring passanger over a soda. Avianca never again.
Flight departure late. Got late in Colombia making us take a different flight next day. Avianca airport crew messed up my ticket so when a I got in Brazil I didn’t have a ticket for my destination. Had to buy a new ticket out of my pocket.
flight delays, staff only communicating when pushed, food service lasting a grand total of 7 minutes, stuck in seat from 45mins into flight until landing
Nice flight, nice crew but no cookie or napkin with my seltzer.
The flight was canceled. Got rebooked to Chicago and when we arrived our luggage where to there. They were going to our original destination the day after. They would not deliver them to our house. We had to go pick them up.
EWR terminal C United Club is great. Flight and everything else mediocre
737 Max was leaking water into the cabin through the windows. Overhead bins opened on landing. Bad bad plane.
Very bad , airplain had problem with engines , had to evacuate, had a delay on my trip for almost 4 hours , lost my rental car in london..
Other than the two hour delay, it was fine. Of course they were very professional and kept us informed throughout the whole delay..
Easy boarding in group 2. Landed 1/2 hr early. Delicious cookie snack.
Good. The wife was not working but then it got resolved.
Missed this flight due to delays from my previous flight

An amazing but very full on adventure. From day one, right through to the end it was very eventful, busy, challenging but most of all extremely rewarding. We had no expectations we we began the tour but our expectations were exceeded. We were blessed with mostly great weather, amazing scenery, fabulous fellow travellers and fantastic and very supportive guides.
PERU EXPRESS - 10 days (Lima- Cusco & Puno) with Domestic Flights
When I inquired about the hikes to Humanitay Island & Rainbow mountain, I was given the impression it was easily doable as there is plenty of time & horses could be hired. No mention was made about the problems that could arise due to the high altitude & that there were steep sections that we would have to navigate ourselves. Assurances should not have been so easily given without mentioning the specific difficulties of altitude acclimatisation and the inability to depend on horses for the whole trip. Otherwise well planned and reliable.

Southern Divide
This was my second G Adventure trip. And compared to my first one, five years ago, this was a huge step backward. Every single day it became obvious that the main business of G Adventure is not providing travelers unique holidays with in-depth cultural experience anymore, but rather motivating travelers to spend as much money as possible at their local offices and partners. As a result, in the Planeterras as well as in most hotels, restaurants and activities promoted by G Adventures one tour group followed the others - total mass tourism! An absolute no-go in my eyes was, when our CEO recommended us to join him for the restaurant in Uyuni because the next three days through the Salt Flats there were no doctors and no hospitals and he was worried about us getting food poisoning. Then, he brought us to the lowest rated restaurant in Uyuni. Two of us (including me - although I just ate two spoons of my dish) got diarrhea afterwards, one got an allergic reaction and the vegan in our group got pasta with cheese! How worried G Adventure really is about the health of the travelers proofed also the following night in the Planeterra in the middle of the Salt Flats. They even wanted money for soap! The price wasn't high at all, but still, making money with the hygiene and therefore the health of the travelers is in my eyes a shame! In general the hotels were mainly good located, but tiny (as expected) and especially very dirty (worse than expected). The optional activities were mainly overpriced. Just the Rainbow Mountain tour and the city tour in La Paz were worth the money. Though, I also have to admit that the itinerary was great. Machu Picchu, Rainbow Mountain (optional activity), Floating Islands, the Teleferico in LaPaz and (my absolute highlight) the Uyuni Salt Flats were just amazing! ... So, while I can highly recommend you going to Peru, Bolivia and Chile, I cannot recommend G Adventure anymore.
Really good tour! I enjoyed it a lot, I also travelled around Peru without tour. Comparing both these experiences tours take away stress and organise everything for you but are definitely more expensive and less flexible. However it was really well done
Real Peru to Bolivia
They were awesome! We were looked after from start to finish. Guide was brilliant!
Cultural and Nature Experience in the Andes
The tour was well organized by Eurolatino (located in Germany) and its local travel operators. We had asked to add 2 days in Puerto Maldonado in the Peruvian Amazon region and skip the last day in Santiago de Chile, which was smoothly accomodated by Eurolatino. Although we never received any vouchers for hotels, tours or transfers, all local guides and drivers were always on time at the designated locations (except for a taxi that our local guide had ordered for the transfer from the pier to Copacabana after our return from Sun Island) and were fully briefed about our itinerary and the booked services. The local guides were very knowledgeable and accomodating to our needs. When our inbound flight from New York was delayed and we therefore arrived in Lima in the afternoon instead of the morning, our local guide managed to still show us the highlights of Lima in one hour instead of the half-day tour originally scheduled. Our local guide in Puno was aware that the Peruvian Migration Office in Yunguyo at the Bolivian border was still closed on the day of our visit (in late April 2023) after the protests in January and February of 2023 and had arranged for us to receive our exit stamp at the Migration Office in Puno harbor before transferring to the border. The only inconvenience was that we received the information about the pick-up time for our morning tour in San Pedro de Atacama at 3am on that morning. We had only tentatively booked the tours in San Pedro, as Javier Cordero of Eurolatino had suggested, and confirmed them 3 days before our arrival in San Pedro. Apparently that caused the schedule to be finalized in the last minute only. For anybody interested in a variety of landscapes and unique features I recommend booking the tours in San Pedro from the beginning. We liked all components of our trip. The big cities Lima, La Paz, Santiago de Chile, in some respects similar but in many respects different and distinct. The djungle tours in Puerto Maldonado. The Inca and colonial history in Cuzco, Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. The overland tour to the Altiplano from Cuzco to La Paz. The Salt Flats at Uyuni and the lagoons and mountain deserts all the way to San Pedro de Atacama. With hindsight, the only change I would make is rather than carrying our overnight necessities (you can leave the rest of the baggage in the car) up the hill on Sun Island (a higher ascend than on Machu Picchu) for a (certainly very nice) sunset, I would opt to visit the Floating Islands near Puno and then transfer directly to La Paz. The only reason for not giving a 5 star rating is that after we had paid the full price for the trip Javier Cordero tried to sell us an upgrade for the visit to Puerto Maldonado, indicating that the originally booked accomodation was not available. Only after I reminded him that the German law on packaged travel services requires the seller of the travel package to provide the services as described in the itinerary or substantially similar services, he confirmed that the itinerary would be provided for the price paid. Except for this irritation he provided an excellent service.
The Best of Peru and Bolivia
The tour was amazing. All thanks to Raphael. He organized it very well and is very reachable whenever you need him. Would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to visit all these countries without wanting to worry about any planning.

Amazon, Incas & Titicaca - 13 days
This trip was amazing and included one of the best travel experiences of my life so far. Peru is a vibrant, exciting, fun and diverse place to visit. Im a solo traveller - plus gay man,and felt completely safe walking around solo in Lima, Cusco, and all the small villages and towns. I made great friends on this tour - including other solo travellers. This trip included all the highlights Peru has to offer, Machu Picchu, Cusco, Lamas and Alpacas, history, Local Food, amazing landscapes, Lake Titicaca and the floating island, cities, towns, villages, and of course The Amazon Jungle - my travel highlight. The Amazon accommodation was beautiful, located in the jungle. I would wake up to the sounds of Howler monkeys communicating outside my cabin each morning. Listening to the wildlife, while sitting on my fly screen covered balcony listening to the animals at sunrise and sunset - plus the fall of the rain in thenight time - was truly awesome. We took an amazing walk over suspension bridges elevated above the jungle canopy - with the tress filled with sloths and their babies. We did a boat night safari spotting the animals, and one day took a guided canoe ride into an inland lake - filled with fish, so our guide threw bits of food in the water and out came the piranhas to eat it - SOOO COOL. Machu Picchu is overwhelming. All those years seeing pictures and documentaries on Tv - to then be there and see it with your own eyes - such a overwhelming experience... and i mean that in the best way. The place is so much bigger in person. The train up and back is very comfortable with big windows - toilets and bar service in each cart. Great scenery rides heading up in the morning. Coming back - our cart turned into the party area and it was fun. There is quite a variety of altitude elevation in parts of Peru so you may at times feel dizzy - I was totally fine, I drank the Cocoa Tea supplied (helps with altitude sickness) everywhere we went and felt good - but others were sometimes feeling off. There are lots of Stairs and Slopped paths throughout Peru - so if you want 'buns of steel' by the end of the trip - you will get them visiting here. The tour itself was well paced - we would typically see sights in the morning and then return to our hotel to do our own thing for the rest of the day - great balance. Our Tour Leader John was wonderful - along with all our local guides in the different areas we visited - top notch. Really loved Peru and would recommend for everyone to go with ON THE GO.

Essential Peru and Bolivia
My family and I traveled to Peru and Bolivia w/ Indus Travels. Everything was fantastic! The hotels, tour guides (especially Elvis in Bolivia), drivers, and support staff were superb. We will definitely travel with Indus Travels again. Claudia S.

10 Day Peru Express - Lima, Ica, Machu Picchu, Cusco & Puno + Titi-Kaka Lake with Domestic Flights with Waman Adventures was an amazing trip. Waman Adventures ran this tour smoothly and professionally. All accommodations, transportation, and most of the food were good. Every second of this trip was carefully thought out. A very informative, entertaining, and pleasant tour. You don't need to worry about anything. We learn a lot about Peru, nature, the ancient Inca civilization, and the current tribes. The tour guides Gido and Will are very professional, caring, punctual, and accurate. The hiking trips might be challenging ( for me, I have asthma) but there is an option to take a horse or bike with the driver. We highly recommend Waman Adventure Tours to everyone.
Fantastic tour! Perfect mix of activities and down time. All must do’s included with great optionales. Very well organised by G Adventures with the best tour guide! Absolutely recommend.
