Egyptian Visits for Schools

Invite Cleopatra and her priest into your school and be transported back in time to the year 31BCE.  Cleopatra is the famous Queen of the Nile and this exciting Egyptian day promises to add learning and wonder to your topic.

The Egyptian School visit can also be delivered by King Ptolemy the Saviour as an alternative!

The Egyptian school visit can be booked for one or several classes for a full day or a half day. We have worked with up to four classes before.

Below is an outline of a typical Egyptian Visit.

Introduction

The Living Isis (usually) introduces herself and provides a general background on the time.

Every day clothing, objects and way of life are discussed as well as Egyptian Gods and Goddesses.  The introduction usually features the Creation Myth also.

The Mummy Maker

Mummification.

In this session, children will meet our specially made life-size Mummification dummy.  It also features a ready made 6ft Mummy; a coffin and all the equipment needed for mummifying, as well as the opportunity for children to create their own replica artefacts from clay.

The priest (or Cleo!) takes the children through the complicated process of Mummification, using his recently dead friend for the children to practise on.  The corpse dummy is designed to allow for children to take out organs for storage in the appropriate canopic jar etc.

Volunteers are asked variously to join in with aspects of the process, wearing various masks and even to stand in as a sacrificial bull – all will become clear.  By the end, the mummy should be ready to place in its sarcophagus.  This session incorporates art/DT skills.

Work Along The Nile

This session is structured in three sections and offers an amazing opportunity to handle many authentic objects most of which are of museum quality.  In groups, children are asked to problem-solve, working together to figure out clues as to which countries to trade and barter with for goods.

Then, they must pause their ordinary lives, as Egyptian citizens are asked to help to build pyramids as part of their taxes.  Using fantastic kits, sourced internationally, children either build a pyramid or take part in a traditional artistic challenge.

Finally, groups handle a remarkable collection of replica artefacts, discussing each object to learn its use and the work role (or job) that matches it.

This session helps children to understand ordinary working lives of Egyptians and incorporates art/DT skills.

egyptian school trips london

Egyptian Scribe

Children craft their own papyrus from strips of paper (to be provided in school, as well as glue and black paint, please) and then leave to dry.

Egyptian Hieroglyphic Writing is explored, with an explanation of

its decoding via the Rosetta Stone (if teacher-led) and/or its use in schooling of important children for official positions in society.

Children use our (highly coveted) class set of Egyptian Hieroglyphic Stencils to learn about hieroglyphs’ correspondence to individual letters and write their own name.

Various tools including an authentic Scribe’s Writing Set are displayed and children use similar reed pens and paint to draw up an official document of their choosing (ideally on their papyrus if it is dry) – name and address is suggested.  This session incorporates art/DT.

egyptian school trips london

Pastimes, Toys & Games

Egyptian pastimes are discussed and authentically reproduced toys are shown.  Cleopatra teaches the children some Egyptian dancing.

Children will have the opportunity to play with old Egyptian toys such as whipping tops and to try some games (with teachers’ permissions) eg. leapfrog and tug of war.  We bring a class set of solid wood Mancalas for children to challenge each other at “the oldest game in the world” which has been found by archaeologists carved into the stone of the Great Pyramid at Giza.

Storytelling

Egyptian myths & storytelling.

egyptian school trips london

We always end the day with storytelling as a whole group, ideally fitting in a myth, told traditionally as well as one of our much-appreciated “silly stories” when all can join in together.

We, Greg and Lisa, work fully in role as Egyptians.  This means that we use our subject knowledge to respond to questions as Egyptians would do.  This historical interpreter’s commitment to authenticity is tempered with a teacher’s sense of appropriateness though – so we do not swear (as some reenactors will in school, claiming that this was the way it was!).  Our focus is on the educational experience for the children and what serves them best, so the sessions are interactive and involve everyone.

The day is fully risk assessed and this can be emailed upon request.  Confirmation of booking is taken as a contract between the school and The Specialists and acceptance of our T & C’s .

Greg and Lisa McCarthy have many years of experience working with children. Greg is a teacher and Lisa a former Occupational Therapist in learning disabilities. Both have DBS  and public liability insurance.

Replica resources are meticulously researched and as authentic to the period as possible; many of museum standard.  We will bring real animal hide and animal bone objects.  We understand if anyone is sensitive to this (Lisa is a vegetarian in real life!) but please be prepared.  Our bone replica artefacts really are made of bone – not plastic!  Whilst the day features a real African Gazelle skin, for obvious reasons, the leopard “skin” for the Mummification session is faux fur!

Egyptian school visits for education.  We provide a living history and reenactment service as historical interpreters focusing on the  What can we find out about Ancient Egypt from what has survived topic.  As re-enactors, we use storytelling/Egyptian myths,  dance, writing using reeds and artefacts such as toys and games, full mummification kit etc. to bring the excitement of real history to your classroom.

Some of the locations we travel to for our Egyptians workshops are:

East-Midlands, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Leamington, Leicester, Hinckley, Nottingham, Coventry, Birmingham, Tamworth, Derbyshire, , Chesterfield, Ilkeston, Swadlincote, Nottinghamshire, Derby, Mansfield, Worksop, Newark, Loughborough, Melton Mowbray, Coalville, Lutterworth, Corby, Kettering, Wellingborough, Nuneaton,  Solihull, Warwick, Rugby, West Midlands.

A happy return in 2022 to in-person courses

2022 saw BSS returning to in-person teaching at UCL at last! 14 fascinating courses across the spring and summer, most of which were also live-streamed, were enjoyed by over 235 participants from more than 15 countries. We are ever grateful to our team of Course Directors: Dr Elizabeth Baquedano, Prof. Aidan Dodson, Dr Sarah Doherty, Dr Iwona Kozieradzka-Ogunmakin, Dr Claire Malleson, Dr Robert Morkot, Mr Jack Neighbour, Prof. Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones, Dr Bill Manley, Dr José-Ramón Pérez-Accino, Dr Luigi Prada, and Mr Matt Szafran.

Dr Sarah Doherty and Mr Matt Szafran delivered a fascinating hands-on course on stone tools and technologies. Picture above on the balcony of the UCL Institute of Archaeology, clockwise: Geoff Phillipson, Tracey Gill, Barbara Pentlow, Alison Bone, Arthur Farrow, Sarah Dohery, and Mick Oakey.

BSS 2021 as successful as ever

We were thrilled to welcome some 300 attendees from over 20 countries at our events in 2021. We convened 16 spring and summer courses - more than ever before! In addition to a fascinating study day delivered online, some of you attended our exhibition tour of "Epic Iran" at the Victoria and Albert Museum - our first face-to-face meeting since the pandemic began. Our programme was a tremendous success thanks to our team of dedicated Course Directors: Dr Elizabeth Baquedano, Prof. Aidan Dodson, our former BSS Director Ms Lucia Gahlin, Dr Iwona Kozieradzka-Ogunmakin, Prof. Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones, Dr Bill Manley, Dr Lidija McKnight, Dr Franziska Naether, Dr José-Ramón Pérez-Accino, Dr Luigi Prada, and Dr Campbell Price, who also delivered our study day. Although we missed such highlights as classes taught in the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology, we enjoyed a fabulous virtual object handling session facilitated by Campbell – another first for BSS! We also enjoyed seeing many of you at our Zoom evening receptions.

BSS in Egypt

We are proud to have organised at least one course in Egypt every year since 2009 (apart from during the pandemic). This is a very special learning opportunity: a programme of lectures and visits to archaeological sites, some usually closed to visitors but opened specially for BSS by the The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. Daily visits to ancient monuments, accompanied by a renowned Egyptologist, enhance this learning experience.

Monday 15 to Monday 22 April

This year we will be returning to Luxor for a brand new reading hieroglyphs course. This will be a unique opportunity to engage in a 10-session course taught by Dr Bill Manley on location in Egypt. Daily visits to ancient monuments enhance the learning experience. Our Course Director accompanies the site visits, and is on hand throughout to answer questions, discuss, and socialise with you.

This year we will be returning to Amarna after more than a decade. This will be a unique opportunity to engage in a 10-session course taught by Dr Anna Stevens, Assistant Director of excavations at the site of Amarna, on location in Egypt. Daily visits to ancient monuments enhance the learning experience. Our Course Director accompanies the site visits, and is on hand throughout to answer questions, discuss, and socialise with you.

The Tutankhamun Exhibition has become recognised by schools from over much of England, as a major resource in the study of Ancient Egypt. School children can experience the mystery and wonder of the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb first hand. The Exhibition - the most comprehensive and innovative on the boy pharaoh outside of Egypt - actually recreates the tomb, treasures, and mummy of Tutankhamun.

A fantastic trip (we come every year) and as always children have found very informative. Enjoyed by all! Thank you. St Mary's First School, West Moors

Schools

The Tutankhamun Exhibition was created in 1987 in the footsteps of the famous 1972 London exhibition at the British Museum. However, because the Exhibition uses unique, accurate and perfect facsimiles of the king's treasures, it has been possible to recreate the ante-chamber and burial chamber of the tomb exactly as it was when it was discovered by Howard Carter in 1922; thus capturing a moment in time forever. The Tutankhamun Exhibition is a permanent exhibition situated in the centre of Dorchester, the county town of Dorset. The Exhibition has a thriving schools programme.

The Exhibition starts with a wealth of information on various aspects of Ancient Egypt including the Rosetta Stone and Mummification; the historical & political background to the life of Tutankhamun; and the search for, and discovery of, his tomb. Next is a unique recreation of Tutankhamun's mummy. The body has been replicated using special techniques to exactly re-create the original, which now lies out of sight in the sarcophagus in Tutankhamun's tomb in the Valley of the Kings.

The children learnt so much! The introductory talk gave a really useful context, and the worksheets provided an invaluable focus. Thank you. Marshwood School

Schools

The reconstruction of the Ante-Chamber is filled with its treasures just as it was in 1922 and even the pleasant odours of the unguents & oils have been reproduced. The Burial Chamber depicts the coffins being raised from the sarcophagus and offers school pupils an unparalleled experience. These unique factors have made The Tutankhamun Exhibition famous in its own right. It has been extensively featured on numerous national and international television programmes.

With the inclusion of Ancient Egypt in the National Curriculum, and in particular the emphasis on Tutankhamun, the Exhibition has become a 'must' for schools, a wonderful resource to which children can really relate. For those thinking of bringing a party, it is advisable to book well in advance, otherwise it may not be possible to obtain the dates you require.

Ancient Egypt In London: 10 Places

Will Noble

Ah London. Land of sphinxes, pyramids and obelisks. Home of hieroglyphics. Final resting place of great pharaohs. Nope, we haven't gone off our rocker. Since the late 18th century London has been gaga for all things ancient Egyptian. In fact, we reckon it's the best place to see Egypt outside of Egypt. Here's why.

egyptian school trips london

1. Richmond Avenue

Nelson trounced Napoleon's navy in the 1798 Battle of the Nile. This roused the first wave of Egyptmania in London, which would never truly fizzle out. Go to Richmond Avenue in Islington and you'll find many of the villas here guarded by miniature sphinxes and obelisks. Joseph Kay — surveyor for Islington's Thornhill Estate — had these cute Egyptian touches installed in 1841, that's 43 years after Nelson's victory. A certain Anthony Blair looked out on this Egyptian scene from his former home at Richmond Crescent, which is possibly what imbued him with a pharaoh-like sense of power.

2. Crystal Palace

Joseph Paxton's glass-terpiece the Crystal Palace went and burned down in 1936. Not much survived the blaze but six sphinxes did, and they're still standing their ground in Crystal Palace Park today. The sphinxes added extra bling to the Crystal Palace in 1854 when it relocated from Hyde Park to Sydenham. They're full-sized copies of properly ancient sphinxes housed in the Louvre, Paris.

3. British Museum

The British Museum provides a double header of delights for aspiring Egyptologists. Firstly there's the museum itself, laden with poems on papyrus, hefty blocks pilfered from pyramids and the wooden coffin of a priest called Nesperennub . It's the biggest collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities outside Cairo.

The museum's link with Egypt doesn't stop there. The disused platform of the former British Museum Tube station is said to be haunted by a mummy sporting a headdress and a loin cloth. Allegedly, while the station was still open, a national newspaper offered a cash reward to anyone brave enough to spend a night alone there. No one was. The British Museum has popped up in many a curse-driven B-movie, including the 1935 comedy Bulldog Jack . The museum's Egyptian heritage is now referenced inside nearby Holborn station (pic below).

egyptian school trips london

4. Carreras Cigarette Factory

The  redoubtable faux Egyptian facade of the Carreras Cigarette Factory could easily be a Bond villain's lair. It is flanked by two jumbo black cats, which you half expect to whack you with a massive paw as you sidle past. Built in 1926, the factory is a prime example of 20th century Egyptian revival, prompted by people like Howard Carter, who was busy digging up pharaohs at the time. At the factory's opening ceremony, heaps of sand were piled in front of the building, while actors from a production of Aida launched into song. Today, the former fag factory calls itself Greater London House and is somewhat ironically occupied by the British Heart Foundation. By the way, you can pay your tributes to Howard Carter at Putney Vale Cemetery (where there are also some Egyptian revival mausoleums).

While most Art Deco architects pulled off Egyptian chic with aplomb, it's debatable whether the same can be said for the Egyptian Hall and Escalator at Harrods. London's notorious Egyptian Mohammed Al Fayed commissioned both these Vegasesque features complete with busts of pharaohs, some of which bear a striking resemblance to him. But who are we to scoff? Both the Egyptian Hall and the Escalator are now listed by English Heritage.

6. Petrie Museum

The Petrie Museum — named after Egyptologist extraordinaire Flinders Petrie — stockpiles 80,000 ancient artifacts. Here, and for free, you can ogle huge chunks of hieroglyphic-covered stone down to intimate personal items like combs, toys and musical instruments. The Petrie's calendar is chocka with everything from pottery making to sand dancing classes.

egyptian school trips london

7. Cleopatra's Needle

New York's got one, Paris has got one, and London's got the third. Cleopatra's Needle is another Battle of the Nile token, gifted to England in 1819 by Muhammed Ali (nope, not that one). Unfortunately, Ali's gift didn't include postage, and the 21 metre high red granite stone remained in Egypt until 1878. It was eventually erected on the Victoria Embankment following a disastrous voyage in which six men drowned. When you're next at Cleopatra's Needle, check out the accompanying cast iron camel benches . During the London 2012 Games, an Egyptian Wenlock mascot stood close by. It was even more baffling than the normal Wenlock.

8. Magnificent Seven Cemeteries

The Egyptians knew a thing or two about shuffling off this mortal coil in style. And the Victorians knew a thing or two about copying them. In Highgate Cemetery, the column flanked Egyptian Avenue is the final resting place of the fortunate few who could afford a mausoleum at this salubrious address. Meanwhile, the Egyptian revival entrance lodges of Abney Park in Stoke Newington are decorated with the likes of lotus flower heads and sepals. And if you go to Kensal Green Cemetery, you'll find it peppered with Egyptian style mausoleums.

egyptian school trips london

Eatery decor doesn't get much quirkier than LMNT in Hackney . It's a screwball hodgepodge of ancient Roman, Greek and Egyptian. The latter is represented by hieroglyphic panels, fake mummy coffins nailed to the wall and sphinx shaped fireplaces. The whole lot must have been tacked together for a fraction of the price of Harrods' Egyptian Hall, yet LMNT's tongue in cheek touch makes it infinitely more tasteful. Whether the archaic erotica in the toilets is tasteful, we'll leave up to you.

10. They sphinx it's all over...

London is dripping with so much Egyptian history and influence, the final place on this list is actually another list of places. Deep breath then. The facade ( and gaudy clock ) of the former Daily Telegraph building on Fleet Street, the Hoover Building in Perivale, the Egyptian treasure trove at the Soane Museum (including the Sarcophagus of Seti I), the tableau above the entrance to 35 New Broad Street, Piccadilly's Egyptian Hall (no longer with us). And let's not forget Canary Wharf, surely London's most famous pyramid.

Interactive learning for KS1, KS2 and KS3

egyptian school trips london

Following in the investigative steps of Howard Carter you will have the chance to explore more Educational Resources than you could pack into a pyramid.

Familiarising yourself with some of the famous Ancient gods and hieroglyphics as well as weapons-handling, archaeology and training with sword and shield make this a school day with enough packed in until it is time for your mummy. This mummy won’t be waiting at the school gate though.

Unique Educational Resources

Mummification or embalming, as it is also known, was something that the Egyptians were famous for. From bulls, to cats, to princes to monkeys the Egyptians embalmed just about everything. Normally the embalming process was given 70 days – we have mastered a way of doing it in a much shorter time, but we don’t cut any corners; all the organs still need removing and the heart replaced carefully.

But before the Egyptians made it to the afterlife or had need of a sarcophagus, they often had battles to fight and for that they made sure they were masters of the bow and arrow. In one of our demonstrations we can use safety arrows to demonstrate the power of our Egyptian recurve bow to see how Egyptians fought and won at epic battles like Kadesh in 1274 BC.

““The children learnt so much and were buzzing all day. The writing the children produced the following day was of a very high standard. We also had feedback from parents saying how excited their children were and how much they talked about it at home.”

– Teacher, Yr 3 and 4

This walk considers the spaces and places in which women lived, worked and campaigned. From Victorian prostitution and charitable missions to the daily life for women, this walk takes in a range of women's experiences in the East End and offers an alternative perspective on the area.

Riots, Reggae, Muruls and Markets: Brixton

Once London's premier suburban shopping centre with a unique surviving set of arcaded markets and early picture palaces, Brixton was transformed in the mid-twentieth century by the vibrant Caribbean community. This walking tour follows its changing fortunes and recent transformation which has brought a wonderful series of public murals, cafe culture, and even a new currency.

Cosmopolitan London: Brick Lane

The East End has always been known for its diversity and has attracted numerous immigrant groups. On this tour we will discover how each group has contributed to the area.  French street names, old synagogues, a soup kitchen and an exotic indoor market building built by Jews from eastern Europe; Mosques, textile businesses and restaurants run by the current Bangladeshi Community.

London Royal Courts Of Justice

Royal Courts Of Justice

  • View on Map

The Royal Courts of Justice, commonly called the Law Courts, is a court building in Westminster which houses the High Court and Court of Appeal of England and Wales. Located in the Strand, it is reminiscent of a cathedral in both style and scale. Soaring arches and beautiful stained glass windows ornamented with the coats of arms of Lord Chancellors and keepers of the Great Seal, combined with a mosaic marble floor leading to a maze of enchanting corridors to create a majestic setting or exciting visit to one of London’s best-kept secrets.

What to expect during your visit

The Royal Courts of Justice delivers fantastic tours for schools, which can be tailored to meet individual needs, however, they do not provide ‘Workshop Sessions’ for Schools nor ‘Moot Court Sessions’.

Highlights of student tours include:

  • The Great Hall
  • Viewing of original court documents relating to Guy Fawkes from the year 1605 (subject to these being on display)
  • Exhibition of legal costumes
  • History of the fabulous art, including works by Wright, Lawrence and Shee
  • History of the RCJ’s famous cases and Inquiries

Old Bailey Insight Tour

Immerse yourself in one of Britain’s most famous courts, with centuries of history and still actively hearing cases to this day.

A trip to the Old Bailey will promise a combination of historical information, tours of the local area, and the chance to sit in on trials happening that day.

For students interested in British history, criminology or sociology, this is an unmissable experience.

Tour itinerary

This tour starts in the Viaduct pub opposite the Old Bailey in Newgate Street where, as part of the package, you will be able to visit an original Newgate prison cell that now forms part of the pub’s cellar. There is also a talk covering the history of the Old Bailey and places of interest connected to the court, such as the site where public hangings were carried out – and the pub where the wealthy rented rooms to get the best view of the executions.

At the end of the talk, each visitor is provided with a run-down of what is on in all the Old Bailey’s 18 courtrooms. This includes details about the cases on that day so you can make an informed choice about which court to enter. If there is an interesting trial taking place, you will know about it; if one of the country’s top criminal barristers is in action, you can be there to witness advocacy at its best. As the court is a high-security building, please note that visitors are only given access to the public galleries from which a trial can be viewed. It is a bit like being in the balcony seats of a small theatre looking down on the court. Members of the public are not allowed to wander around the court.

Planning support for your Old Bailey trip

For schools, colleges and universities, we can provide a special teachers’ information pack as part of the service. This is sent out before your visit and gives all the information you need to prepare a lecture or class, so students come to the court properly informed and knowing what to look for. The pack includes significant dates in the court’s 1,000-year history; an outline of the English Justice System and how it compares with legal systems in other countries; what sentences criminals can expect if convicted of certain crimes, and a guide to the layout of the court.

Israel-Gaza latest: Netanyahu has blood on his hands, says family of Israeli hostage killed in Gaza

Ceasefire talks are starting up in Egypt this weekend, and pressure is building on negotiators as the six-month anniversary of the war approaches. Elsewhere, the US has said it is on high alert over the possibility of an Iranian strike within Israel.

The kibbutz where killed hostage Elad Katzir lived has paid tribute to him in an emotional statement.

Kibbutz Nir Oz said the 47-year-old had suffered "months of torture" while he was held hostage by Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

"Elad was a man of laughter, hugs and happiness, fields and land," the kibbutz said, referencing his job as a farmer.

"He was especially loved by the kibbutz's children, members, and residents.

"May his memory be a blessing."

We've been reporting today on the death of Israeli hostage Elad Katzir, whose body was recovered by the IDF overnight.

The Israeli military has estimated he was killed by his captors in mid-January, according to The Times Of Israel.

This would have been not long after Palestinian Islamic Jihad published a video of him being held in captivity.

The IDF learned of the whereabouts of his body about a week ago and received final confirmation of the location last night.

Turkish authorities say they have detained 48 people suspected of being tied to Islamic State.

The detentions are in connection with a shooting at an Istanbul church in January, Turkey's interior minister Ali Yerlikaya said.

One Turkish citizen was killed when two gunmen stormed the Italian Santa Maria Catholic Church in Turkey's largest city.

We reported earlier that ceasefire talks are starting up again in Cairo this weekend.

Hamas has now confirmed its delegation, headed by the group's deputy chief in Gaza, will head to Egypt tomorrow.

Negotiators will be discussing a deal aimed at securing a ceasefire in Gaza and the return of Israeli hostages.

US President Joe Biden earlier penned a letter to the leaders of Egypt and Qatar calling on them to up the pressure on Hamas to "agree to and abide by a deal".

We just reported a few moments ago that Israel's military has recovered the body of hostage Elad Katzir from Gaza.

His sister, Carmit Palty Katzir, announced his death in a social media post - and said she blamed the Israeli government for not acting to save him.

"Elad was brought to Israel last night, after being murdered in captivity," she wrote on Facebook.

She said the IDF would announce the "brave rescue operation" but "will not tell you that the prime minister, the cabinet and the IDF have no idea where most of the kidnapped, the alive and murdered are held".

"They won't tell you either that they have no way to protect the kidnapped, even when they know where they are," she added, saying her brother "could have been saved if a deal would have happened on time".

Ms Katzir described the Israeli government as "cowardly" and said her brother had been "abandoned".

"Look at yourselves in the mirror and say if your hands didn't spill that blood. You have 133 more kidnappers to redeem, worlds to save," she said.

The IDF has said it has recovered the body of hostage Elad Katzir overnight from Gaza.

His body was taken from the southern city of Khan Younis and returned to Israeli territory.

The IDF said it had intelligence that Mr Katzir was "murdered in captivity" by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group.

Mr Katzir was taken by the militant group from Kibbutz Nir Oz during the 7 October attacks.

His mother, Hanna, was also abducted and subsequently released in November, while his father was killed on 7 October.

He had previously been seen alive in a propaganda video published by Islamic Jihad in December, and again in early January.

The operation to recover Mr Katzir's body was carried out by the Commando Brigade following intelligence provided by the Shin Bet security agency and the IDF's Military Intelligence Directorate.

The IDF and Shin Bet both said they "express their deepest condolences to the family".

The Palestinian ambassador to the UN has accused Israel of deliberately targeting the aid workers killed in a military strike this week.

Seven volunteers working for the World Central Kitchen were killed when IDF strikes hit their convoy in Gaza.

"The killing of the aid workers from the World Central Kitchen is not an isolated incident," ambassador Riyad Mansour said.

"Israel knew very well who it was targeting, hitting three cars in three locations, despite the fact that they were identifiable and had gotten coordinated with Israel."

He said it had taken "the deaths of foreigners" for the international community to take notice of what is happening in Gaza.

Israel has said it made a "grave mistake" and had mistakenly believed it was targeting Hamas operatives in the convoy.

An Iranian journalist is back on TV just a week after he was stabbed outside his home.

Pouria Zeraati, a 36-year-old presenter at London-based broadcaster Iran International, said "the show must go on" a week after he was attacked in London.

He was stabbed in the leg by three unknown assailants as he approached his car in Wimbledon, southwest London, on 29 March.

Mehdi Hosseini Matin, the Iranian charge d'affaires in the UK, said "we deny any link" to the knife attack.

Iran International editor Niusha Boghrati previously told Sky News that the station was guarded by armed police, saying in February that "the threats have turned into a reality of terrorism".

The broadcaster temporarily shut down its operations in London early last year and moved to studios in Washington after what it described as an escalation of "state-backed threats from Iran".

You can read more on this story below...

The country's foreign minister has said Australia has "not yet received sufficient information" about the death of one of its citizens, Laizawmi 'Zomi' Frankcom.

Ms Frankcom was killed along with six other aid workers in an Israeli military strike in Gaza.

Foreign minister Penny Wong said she had written to Israel about this, telling her counterparts: "We have not yet received sufficient information to satisfy our expectations."

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese previously spoke about how Ms Frankcom had volunteered to help during the bushfires in Australia before trying to help those "suffering tremendous deprivation" in Gaza.

Israel released the findings of an initial investigation into the deaths yesterday, saying a "grave mistake" had been made.

Two senior officers have been dismissed over the incident.

UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres has said he is "deeply troubled" by reports Israel is using AI in its war against Gaza.

Online news outlet +972 Magazine recently published an investigation alleging the IDF was using AI to help identify bombing targets in Gaza.

It cited Israeli intelligence officials said to be involved in the programme.

Mr Guterres wrote in response to the report: "I am deeply troubled by reports that the Israeli military's bombing campaign includes AI as a tool in the identification of targets, resulting in a high level of civilian casualties.

"AI should be used as a force for good to benefit the world; not to contribute to waging war on an industrial level, blurring accountability."

A spokesperson for the IDF didn't dispute the existence of the tool but denied AI was being used to identify suspected terrorists.
