Great Rail Journeys

Switzerland boasts several of the world’s most scenic rail journeys including the Bernina Express . The highest railway in the Alps, crossing the 2,253m Bernina pass, it tackles gradients as steep as 1 in 7 between Chur in Switzerland and Tirano in northern Italy.

Also breathtaking is the train journey from Oslo to the mountain station of Myrdal, crossing Norway’s high plateaus before linking with the famous Flamsbana ‘Corkscrew’ railway to take you deep into the fjords.

In New Zealand, you can sample several train trips in one holiday, combining the Taieri Gorge Railway and Glenbrook Vintage Railway with the legendary TranzAlpine , which crosses the breadbasket of the Canterbury Plains before climbing into the Southern Alps above the milky-blue meltwaters of the Waimakariri River.

One of the world’s most iconic rail journeys, the Ghan crawls nearly 3,000km across the Australian Outback between Darwin and Adelaide – an unforgettable four-day trip. Equally epic, the Indian Pacific crosses Australia from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific.

Another trans-continental odyssey, the Trans Canada Rail Adventure traverses North America, from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic. Shorter, though no less dramatic, the Rocky Mountaineer weaves through the Canadian Rocky Mountains between Vancouver and Jasper.

In Alaska, we offer year-round adventures on the  Alaska Railroad . Imagine the thrill of boarding a train in Anchorage bound for Denali National Park, the Kenai Fjords or Fairbanks! A great alternative to self-drive, you’ll see Alaska at a different pace and – like Canada’s Rocky Mountaineer – some carriages have glass roofs, providing wonderful views of the forests and mountains.

Via Railway Experience|5-Day Vancouver to Rockies Railway Full Experience Tour Departure

We enjoyed our tour very much, the sights were beautiful, staff we well informed. A highlight for us was the optional evening photographic tour. The only thing stopping me from giving five stars was the last day felt very rushed, especially at the Banff gondola as the queue to get on took half an hour and not enough time allocated to our lunch at the Lake Louise Chateau, we had to ask the waitress to bring out the dessert while we were eating the main as we only had 15 minutes until the bus left. Allocate a bit more time for those things and you will get five stars.

Truly stunning mountain scenery through the Rockies to Vancouver with guest appearances from bears, elk, eagles and gophers! A well paced and organised trip led by an excellent guide Sibylle. Travelling in style on the Rocky Mountaineer was a memorable experience, even though we were in Silver Leaf. A class operation. A minor gripe that there was so little time at the end of the tour in Vancouver and Vancouver Island, luckily we added a couple of extra nights in Vancouver to explore the city.

This has been the tour I dreamt of doing. Along the route, the Rocky Mountaineer was the best in service! They know how to wow the client and are good at it. I have glowing accolades for them. Everything in Alberta was amazing. Jasper, Lake Louise, Banff ... all those stops were incredible. We will arrive home on Saturday at about 3 pm. While there’s no place like home, our journey with Canada Rail Vacations was where it all began in September 2017. Thank you Martin, for operating a tour company that fit our needs....and then some. You gave us options to customize this trip to meet our wishes. Thanks to your staff who know their stuff and coddled me along the way, especially Spencer. And a huge shout out to our Tour Guide Julian. Absolutely knowledgeable about the routes we took and of the trains going through the spiral tunnels. Julian really made those four days of private tours so worth it for us. You have in us four happy clients who will now recommend Canada Rail Vacations to others, plus we have amazing memories. Thanks Martin! Lori, Brian, Ruby and Rudy, Virginia, USA (The Canadian Adventurer)
We just returned home from our recent trans-Canada train adventure and wanted to pass along our thoughts on the holiday. We arrived in Vancouver and stayed at the Fairmont, which was lovely. All of the Fairmont accommodations were outstanding. The Rocky Mountaineer was exceptional! The aesthetic, the staff, the food... everything was amazing. The staff in particular on the train were outstanding, I was so touched, as a vegan they went out of their way to accommodate me and went so far above and beyond (I never would imagine that level of service!). We were also so pleasantly surprised by the Delta Kamloops, our room was gorgeous and the location was great. Of course, the scenery in Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper was incredible, and we so often found ourselves speechless. Both of our tours in Banff and Lake Louise with Julian were outstanding. He was so knowledgeable and kept us entertained every moment of the tour! All in all, an incredible experience from booking to the actual trip. Thank you for a memorable holiday! Stephanie, Hovan & Doris K., Toronto, Canada (The Canadian Adventurer)
Now safely back in Cyprus and settled in again after a great holiday with you in August. Big thanks to Canada Rail Vacations for leaving the excellent wine at the Sutton Place Hotel in Vancouver, it certainly dampened down the trail dust! Shame you couldn't join us to drink it! You have a great team from the ladies who sorted us out before we left the hotels in Vancouver and Banff, to the staff waving us off and those welcoming us at each stop. The entire trip was memorable on so many levels, but an understated highlight for me was standing at the water's edge of Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park, and gazing in wonder at the Walcott Quarry/Burgess Shale! I read about and studied the fossils but to see it in real life was awesome! Anthony, Cyprus (Rockies Circle Essentials)
Now that my wife and I have rested after our very enjoyable tour of Canada and are back into our normal routine we would not like the time to pass without passing on to Canada Rail staff our sincere thanks for making all the reservations and organizing the itinerary.  Suffice it to say that things went like clockwork obviously due in large part to the experienced and dedicated Canada Rail Vacations staff. We will happily refer you to any of our friends and acquaintances who are considering travelling in Canada and will look to you next time we choose to travel in Canada. Many thanks to all! Doug & Norma L, Farrer, Australia (The Canadian Trip of a Lifetime)
Thanks for helping make this a once-in-a-lifetime experience for my daughter and myself. We had many planned, and unplanned, adventures and have many memories. Cannot say enough wonderful things about the staff on both VIA and Rocky Mountaineer. There were some hiccups with scheduling but the graciousness of the staff was superb. Our hotels were very good and thanks for the special gift in Vancouver. We also used your suggestions for touring the city, spot on! Will most likely never tour Canada again as my husband and I toured from Toronto East, but I am recommending Canada Rail Vacations to my family and friends. Thanks again. Train strikes in May 2024: Full list of dates and lines affected

Rail lines are set for disruption in the week following the first May bank holiday as train drivers at 16 rail companies strike on different days.

Thursday 25 April 2024 10:29, UK

train travel holidays

Train drivers will stage a fresh wave of strikes and overtime bans in May, causing disruption to the rail network.

The strikes are part of a long-running dispute over pay.

Members of Aslef union at 16 rail companies will walk out on different days from 7 to 9 May.

Additionally, all members will refuse to work any overtime from 6 May to 11 May.

Here is a full list of the services affected by strikes and when.

Rail strike dates

Tuesday 7 May

Strikes will affect c2c, Greater Anglia, GTR Great Northern Thameslink, Southeastern, Southern, Gatwick Express and South Western Railway.

Wednesday 8 May

Strikes will affect Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Great Western Railway and West Midlands Trains.

Thursday 9 May

Strikes will affect LNER, Northern Trains and TransPennine Express.

Overtime ban dates

From Monday 6 May to Saturday 11 May union members will not work overtime.

Overtime bans, an action short of a strike, means some services may not be running or may be reduced as drivers refuse to work their rest days.

People are advised to check before they travel, as some areas may have no service.

How do strikes and overtime bans affect services?

Strikes tend to mean services on lines where members are participating are extremely affected or cancelled entirely, whereas overtime bans often lead to reduced services.

An underground train pulls into Leicester Square station in central London February 11, 2014. A planned 48-hour strike this week by staff on London's underground rail network which threatened to bring travel misery for millions has been suspended to allow further talks, unions said on Tuesday. REUTERS/Neil Hall (BRITAIN - Tags: POLITICS TRANSPORT BUSINESS EMPLOYMENT)

Are there strikes on the Tube too?

There have been regular strikes on London Underground too recently, and while there aren't any planned walkouts for drivers, customer service managers are set to walk out on Friday 26 April in a dispute over terms and conditions.

There will also be an overtime ban for the customer service managers on the following days:

Monday 29 April

Tuesday 30 April

Wednesday 1 May

Tuesday 2 May

Wednesday 3 May

Thursday 4 May

Friday 5 May

The Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA) says the action by its members is likely to cause Tube stations to close at the last minute, including on the Saturday following the strike (27 April), while TfL has said on its website "some stations may need to close at short notice".

Despite the warning, a TfL spokesperson has said they aren't expecting significant disruption.

This action follows strike action taken by the same workers on 10 April, which the TSSA said had a "real impact" with "many stations shut at short notice".

They say they are "extremely concerned" about TfL's 'Stations Changes' proposals.

"We have made it clear that our union will not accept the continued threats to our members' roles, locations, terms, and conditions to stand unchallenged," a TSSA spokesperson said.

"We will continue to take sustained action until London Underground is prepared to negotiate with us in good faith."

Commenting on the impending strikes, a TfL spokesperson said: "We are disappointed that TSSA is continuing with this strike action following a consultation process.

"While we don't expect this action will cause significant disruption, we urge TSSA to continue to work with us to help find a resolution.

"There are no planned job losses as part of these vital changes which will improve the service we provide to customers at our stations."

How can I stay in the loop?

Why are the strikes still happening?

Aslef rejected a two-year offer of 4% in 2022 and another 4% this year, saying it is way below inflation, and is linked to changes in terms and conditions.

Aslef said train drivers have not had an increase in salary for five years, since their last pay deals expired in 2019.

The union said after its members voted overwhelmingly in February to continue taking industrial action, it asked the train operating companies to hold talks.

General secretary Mick Whelan said the year-old pay offer of 4% and another 4% was "dead in the water".

May bank holiday travel chaos feared as people warned to plan journeys now

NEWS [subcat: UK] May bank holiday travel chaos feared as Brits told to plan journeys now (SEO)

Travellers are set to face mass journey disruptions over the May Bank Holiday next weekend.

London ’s Euston Station will be closed next Sunday to all but London Overground passengers.

People looking to travel are therefore advised to check for the latest updates before planning their routes, especially if they’re headed to Scotland .

From Saturday to Monday, May 4 to 6, engineers will also be carrying out major railway upgrades across the North West of England .

Those wanting to travel between Crewe, Liverpool, Warrington, Runcorn, Wigan, Bolton, Manchester, Preston and Carlisle are therefore advised to check well in advance of setting off.

The Bank Holiday misery comes after the Easter break was marred by three days of motorway and train line chaos , when severe congestion and planned works choked many of the nation’s most crucial motorways, A-roads and rail routes.

James Dean, passenger director for Network Rail’s North West and Central region, said: ‘We know there is never an ideal time to shut the railway but bank holidays continue to be the least disruptive time for us to carry out this essential maintenance.’

NEWS [subcat: UK] May bank holiday travel chaos feared as Brits told to plan journeys now (SEO)

‘With Euston closed our advice is once again to check before you travel over the long weekend, and to plan ahead by checking National Rail Enquiries to see how your journey could be impacted.

Engineering work will further see buses replace trains between Doncaster and Darlington.

In the capital, other constructions and repairs will also cause disruption between Farringdon and Loughborough Junction, between Blackfriars and Herne Hill, and between Battersea Pier and Factory Junction.

On Sunday 5, there will be no Thameslink services running from either Wimbledon or Sutton.

The Sevenoaks service will also run from London Victoria instead of London Blackfriars.

Meanwhile, repair work between Shepherd’s Bush and Watford Junction will see the Southern service suspended between 8pm on the Saturday and noon on Sunday.

Trains along that route will then be suspended again from 9pm that evening.

Travel bug hits millions as Golden Week kicks off in Japan

THE ASAHI SHIMBUN

April 28, 2024 at 13:24 JST

Photo/Illutration

Millions of Japanese started their Golden Week holidays by crowding train stations and airports as they headed to their holiday destinations and hometowns.

Overseas travel was out of the question for many people due to the weak yen.

Predictably, JR Tokyo Station was packed to the rafters as people started fleeing the capital April 27 to spend the holiday period with family members and friends.

Travel departures are expected to reach their peak on May 3, with return trips hitting their busiest on May 5 and 6, according to  Japan Railway group companies. The Nozomi trains on Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines will operate with all seats reserved until May 6.

The platform of the Hokuriku Shinkansen Line, which was extended in March from Kanazawa Station in Ishikawa Prefecture to Tsuruga Station in Fukui Prefecture, was crowded with families holding souvenir bags and other items.

Makiko Awano, 45, a self-employed woman from Tsukuba in Ibaraki Prefecture, and her 7-year-old son were off to visit her eldest son, who is attending senior high school in Kanazawa.

“We will visit a library and a museum, and enjoy delicious food,” she said, adding that she hoped her sightseeing trip would contribute to reconstruction efforts in areas devastated by the Jan. 1 earthquake.

A passenger walks past a closed platform at Liverpool Street station during a strike by the Aslef train drivers in September 2023

Aslef drivers to hold more train strikes in early May

Rolling 24-hour walkouts to halt many services on c2c, Thameslink, Southeastern, LNER and more

Train drivers will strike again in early May in a series of rolling 24-hour walkouts that will bring many services around Great Britain to a halt.

The Aslef union has called a set of strikes from 7 May to 9 May across all the national rail operators contracted to the Department for Transport (DfT), falling within a six-day overtime ban that is also likely to cause severe disruption on some networks.

The industrial action is part of the long-running pay dispute , with some train drivers now going five years without a pay increase.

Most operators will not run any trains on strike days. Although the strikes are at the English operators under the DfT, cross-border services to Wales and Scotland will also be hit on relevant days.

Aslef members voted overwhelmingly in February to continue industrial action.

The union’s general secretary, Mick Whelan, said: “It is now a year since we sat in a room with the train companies – and a year since we rejected the risible offer they made and which they admitted, privately, was designed to be rejected.”

Drivers were offered a two-year deal worth 4% annually, but with changes to working conditions attached. The rise was less than that offered to other parts of the industry in percentage terms.

Whelan said the government’s argument that the offer should have been put to members was disingenuous, given the repeated strike votes.

Drivers will first strike at c2c, Greater Anglia, Great Northern, Thameslink, Southeastern, Southern/Gatwick Express and South Western Railway on Tuesday 7 May.

It will be followed by a 24-hour walkout at Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Great Western Railway and West Midlands Trains on Wednesday 8 May; and at LNER, Northern and TransPennine Express on Thursday 9 May.

The wave of action is the fourth week of rolling strikes staged by Aslef since December, after it altered its tactics in a dispute that has lasted almost two years.

A spokesperson for the Rail Delivery Group, representing train operators, said: “This wholly unnecessary strike action called by the Aslef leadership will sadly disrupt customers and businesses once again, while further damaging the railway at a time when taxpayers are continuing to contribute an extra £54m a week just to keep services running.”

Fresh travel disruption will impact rail passengers in May as train drivers at rail companies across England will stage a new series of strikes in a bitter, long-running dispute.

Members of the Aslef union will walk out on 7–9 May over pay, and ban overtime for six days from 6 May – the early May bank holiday Monday.

Drivers at c2c, Greater Anglia, Great Northern, Thameslink, Southeastern, Southern, Gatwick Express and South Western Railway will strike on 7 May.

On 8 May there will be strikes affecting Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Great Western Railway and West Midlands Trains.

Most operators will not run any trains on strike days.

Although the strikes affect train companies in England, cross-border services to Wales and Scotland are likely to see some knock-on effects.

The union said that after its members voted overwhelmingly in February to continue taking industrial action, it asked the train operating companies to hold talks. Aslef said train drivers have not had an increase in salary for five years, since their last pay deals expired in 2019.

General secretary Mick Whelan said: “It is now a year since we sat in a room with the train companies and a year since we rejected the risible offer they made and which they admitted, privately, was designed to be rejected.

“We first balloted for industrial action in June 2022, after three years without a pay rise. It took eight one-day strikes to persuade the train operating companies [Tocs] to come to the table and talk. Our negotiating team met the Rail Delivery Group [RDG] on eight occasions – the last being on Wednesday April 26 last year.

“That was followed by the Tocs’ ‘land grab’ for all our terms and conditions on Thursday April 27 – which was immediately rejected. Since then train drivers have voted, again and again, to take action to get a pay rise.

“That’s why Mark Harper, the transport secretary, is being disingenuous when he says that offer should have been put to members. Drivers would not vote to strike if they thought an offer was acceptable.”

Mr Whelan said the year-old offer of a 4 per cent pay rise followed by a second 4 per cent increase was “dead in the water”.

The Independent has contacted the Department for Transport for comment.

A spokesperson for the RDG, which represents the train operators, said: “This wholly unnecessary strike action called by the Aself leadership will sadly disrupt customers and businesses once again, while further damaging the railway at a time when taxpayers are continuing to contribute an extra £54m a week just to keep services running.

“We continue to seek a fair agreement with the Aslef leadership which both rewards our people, gives our customers more reliable services and makes sure the railway isn’t taking more than its fair share from taxpayers.”

The latest industrial action comes after thousands of trains were halted during a string of rolling strikes in early April .

Before that, an overtime ban and rolling regional walk-outs hit for nine days from 29 January to 6 February .
