Author image: Woman in blue dress with sunglasses traveling.

If the pandemic has taught us one thing, it’s the importance of traveling. Getting out of your comfort zone, exploring new cities and eating different types of food can change everything. Don’t believe us? We’ve rounded up 28 totally transformative life changing trips, from visiting the Grand Canyon to gorilla trekking in Rwanda. So, if you’re daydreaming about the day you get to leave your pod and explore the rest of the world (or country), start here.

7 U.S. Trips That Will Reinvigorate Your Soul After a Very (Very) Long Year

a ryokan in japan

1. Go Zen At A Ryokan

Staying at a ryokan (a traditional Japanese guesthouse) is an immersive experience rooted in simplicity and heritage. Guests don yukata, relax in onsen, savor kaiseki meals and slumber in tatami-matted rooms. After such a serene overnight trip, you might start to question whether modern conveniences are actually necessary.

the grand canyon

2. Witness The Grand Canyon

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but seeing the Grand Canyon IRL will leave you speechless. The sheer enormity of this jaw-dropping natural wonder is incomprehensible at first glance. As you walk around the rim—stopping at various viewpoints—geological history will unfold before your eyes.

a suspension bridge on the trail to everest base camp

3. Trek To Mount Everest Basecamp

Unlike summiting Everest—which, yeah, we’re not planning on doing—hiking to basecamp requires no crampons, ropes or any technical equipment or skills. But this nearly two-week trek to the foot of the highest mountain in the world is still a feat in and of itself.

sea lions hanging on a beach in the galapagos

4. Observe Endemic Species In The Galapagos Islands

In the eastern Pacific Ocean, 621 miles off the coast of Ecuador, lies a volcanic archipelago so incredible, it inspired Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. Today, the Galapagos Islands continue to draw scientists and wildlife enthusiasts. Where else can you glimpse endemic species like the marine iguana? And now that sea glamping’s an option, you can Galapagos in style. Just be sure you have your vax card or negative COVID-19 test 72 hours prior to travel.

a zebra seen on an african safari

5. Go On An African Safari

A safari is the epitome of #travelgoals. Whether you choose the Serengeti or South Africa as the setting for your game drive, expect scenes straight out of National Geographic. Elephants will pause for a thirst-quenching drink at a watering hole while leopards chase gazelles across the savanna, all right before your eyes.

life changing trips tuscany

6. Wine Taste In Tuscany

We’re going to catch a lot of flak from French wine lovers, but there’s something extra special about Tuscany with its rolling hills, olive groves, vineyards and fairy-tale castles. The chance to sip Chianti straight from the source (aka barrel) will spoil you forever. Saluti!

hot air balloons flying over cappadocia

7. Hot-air Balloon In Cappadocia

There are many sensational spots for a hot-air balloon ride , though few (if any) compare to Cappadocia. Imagine floating over fairy chimneys, pinnacles, hills, valleys and rock-cut churches. Sounds pretty magical, huh? Yep, this sort of aerial escapade is bound to shift your perspective on things.

machu picchu

8. Hike Machu Picchu

With its famous agricultural terraces and mortar-free construction, it’s no wonder Machu Picchu is a must-see for travelers. Though it dates all the way back to the 15 th century, the Lost City of the Incas remains intriguing as ever. A journey to this mountaintop archaeological site will take your breath away (and not because of the altitude).

an active volcano in hawaii

9. Visit An Active Volcano In Hawaii

Waking up in the wee hours of the a.m. to watch the sunrise from atop a volcano is one of those distinctly Hawaiian experiences. Stack the deck that you’ll see lava by planning a guided trip to Kilauea on the Big Island. Not much of a morning person? Book an after-dark excursion!

stargazing in the sahara

10. Stroll Through Arashiyama Bamboo Grove

Envision lying on a blanket, surrounded by pristine sand dunes and gazing up at the midnight sky studded with twinkling cosmos. Just broach the topic of stargazing in the Sahara and we’re ready to buy a ticket to Morocco. Glamping at a luxury desert camp is an added bonus.

the northern lights

11. View The Northern Lights

Regardless of your penchant for astronomy (or lack thereof), it’s impossible not to nerd out over the swirling dance of magenta, violet and green. Your best bet for viewing the northern lights ? Travel to the Arctic Circle or hop aboard Alaska Railroad’s Aurora Winter Train between late September and late March.

someone selling food off a boat in bangkok

12. Explore The Opulence Of Bangkok

In Bangkok , culture and tradition come alive through cuisine, magnificent palaces and sacred temples. Visit the Reclining Buddha, Grand Palace or Wat Arun to get full sense of the grand architecture this beautiful city has to offer. While Thailand’s capital is world-renowned for its delicious street food, proceed with caution if you’re going to sample local cuisine. Some of the delicacies—like luu moo and larb leuat neua, both made with uncooked animal blood—could cause a bacterial infection if you aren't used to eating it.

gorillas in rwanda

13. Gorilla Trek In Rwanda

A safari isn’t the only way to get your animal fix while in Africa. For a primate-centric expedition you’ll never forget, head to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Sure, it’s expensive (in the ballpark of $1,500 per person), but can you really put a price on peeping endangered apes?

red rocks in sedona

14. Explore Sedona’s Red Rocks

Sedona is a deeply photogenic place. Its most distinguishing and dramatic feature? Stunning red rock formations. Of course, hiking (or, in some cases, scrambling) tops our list of must-do activities. We’d put traversing the rust-tinged trails in the category of a religious awakening.

life changing trip victoria falls

15. Visit The Victoria Falls

Located on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, this majestic body of water is a sight to behold. Nicknamed “The Smoke that Thunders,” Victoria Falls is a UNESCO heritage site and it’s been cited as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

life changing trips table mountain

16. Soar To The Top Of Table Mountain

Complete your southern Africa trip with a stop at Table Mountain. The most photographed attraction in South Africa, Table Mountain boasts a breathtaking view of Cape Town and is home to over 2,000 plants. And it’s not just another crag that you trek in order to get to the top. The most popular way to get to the peak is by cable car, courtesy of the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company.

the great wall of china

17. Walk Along The Great Wall Of China

Sure, you’ve seen photos of the 13,000-mile Great Wall, which protected dynasties more than 2,000 years ago. But there’s nothing quite like walking from watchtower to watchtower on your own two feet. To avoid the throngs of tourists, drive about 90 minutes from the city to the restored Mutianyu section.

the sphinx and pyramid of chephren in egypt

18. Visit Egypt's Great Pyramids

Channel your inner Lawrence of Arabia and head into the desert on camelback to see the Great Pyramid of Giza. Built by a Fourth Dynasty pharaoh in 2560 B.C.E., this 481-foot structure is the oldest wonder of the ancient world. Let that settle in.

the ring road in iceland

19. Drive The Ring Road In Iceland

You’ll feel like you’re on another planet when you take the ten-day drive around Iceland’s Ring Road, passing thermal springs, volcanoes, waterfalls, fjords and glaciers. In the summer, the sun barely hits the horizon before rising again—and in the winter, well, we hope you like the dark.

the salt flats in bolivia

20. Stroll Bolivia's Salt Flats

You’re not walking on the clouds—although you will feel like it when you explore Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt flat in the world, where a desert of salt spans more than 4,500 miles. (While Bolivia has reopened its borders, some of its neighboring countries remain shut, so visiting in the near future might be difficult.)

life changing trips paris

21. Saunter The Streets Of Paris

Travel to this fashion capital of the world is open at the time of this writing. However, France, like many European countries has been stringent with COVID restrictions. Nonetheless, if you get the chance, put on your A-line skirt, rock a beret and gobble all the croissants as you tour the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum and the Arc de Triomphe.

life changing trips new york

22. Explore The City That Never Sleeps

They say if you can make it here you can make it anywhere. And while you’re not moving to the city that never sleeps, even spending a week in this busy metropolis will make you feel on top of the world. Take in the dizzying lights of Times Square, hop a ferry ride to the Statue of Liberty and channel your inner Jay-Z with a visit to Brooklyn Bridge Park.

life changing trips niagara falls

23. Savor The Serenity Of Niagara Falls

Avoid the chaotic New York City crowds by escaping to Niagara Falls instead. A trip to the Niagara Falls Observation Tower will give you an unbeatable view of the cascading falls.

life changing trips rome

24. Hit The Cobblestone Streets Of Rome

Indulge your inner historian and take a trip to Rome. Explore all the ancient ruins-turned-beautiful-Insta-ops, like the Colosseum, the Pantheon and the Trevi Foundation. Oh, and don’t forget to treat yourself to some pizza deliziosa and gelato decadente.

life changing trips bora bora

25. Take A Load Off In Beautiful Bora Bora

Don’t want to visit any of the wonderful attractions in this beautiful French Polynesian island? If you’d rather play hooky and skip Mount Otemanu, Leopard Rays Trench or Tupitipiti Point to spend the day lounging in your bungalow, we totally get it. After all the stress and anxiety of lockdown, you deserve it.

life changing trips santorini

26. Get Your Sip On In Santorini

You’ve never really experienced the color blue until you’ve overlooked the Aegean Sea at sunset while taking in the gorgeousness that is Santorini. What makes the experience that much better is sipping on a glass of the most pristine Assyrtiko this renowned wine region of Greece can offer.

life changing trips amsterdam

27. Bike Through Amsterdam

The Netherlands finally opened their boarders to tourists in June 2021, so if you always dreamt of biking through the dreamy streets of Amsterdam, now is the time. You can visit the Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum or give your legs a rest on a canal cruise.

life changing trips tulum

28. Let Loose In Tulum

Snorkeling in caves, archeological tours (hello, Chichen Itza) and boozy nights with friends blurred by tequila—if you had to cancel your girls’ trip to Mexico due to the pandemic, Tulum is the best place to (responsibly!) make up for lost time.

Chairs in low water pool

This year, perhaps greater than any other before it, the yearning to travel meaningfully is particularly pronounced. More than mere escapes from the mundanities of everyday life, we’re actively seeking getaways that have the potential to wholly transform the way we see the world. After all the obstacles to global travel over the last two years, it looks like 2022 will finally be the year to schedule the trips we’ve put on hold—the ones meant to celebrate a milestone, rediscover your sense of self, reconnect with family, or immerse yourself in fascinating cultures abroad. The one trip that could change our lives.

When you’re ready to lock in accommodations for that long-awaited trip, look no further than the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio of 30 extraordinary hotel brands to inspire incredible moments and experiences in unforgettable destinations around the world. With more than 100 Marriott Bonvoy member properties recognized in this year’s Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Award, and seven landing in the number one spot of their respective categories, the modern traveler agrees. Here are eight stunning RCA-winning hotels to book now that guarantee life-changing adventures in 2022.

Be enriched by immersive cultural experiences abroad.

The Cotton House, Autograph Collection — Spain

Housed in a striking 19th-century neoclassical building—the former headquarters of Barcelona’s Cotton Textile Foundation—The Cotton House has preserved many of its impressive original architectural features, including a spiral staircase that was constructed in 1957. Beyond design nods to the landmark’s storied history, The Cotton House offers guests immersive experiences tied to textile production, like artisanal shirt tailoring by the sartorial legends of Santa Eulalia, which takes place in the same atelier space frequented by guild members in the past.

The Romanos, a Luxury Collection Resort — Greece

The Romanos is a plush waterfront resort that brilliantly captures the magnificence of Greece’s lesser-traveled Peloponnese region. Through its curated catalog of authentic experiences developed with Costa Navarino’s Messinian Authenticity program, the property serves as a gateway to a rich cultural legacy that spans nearly five millennia. Access to three nearby UNESCO-designated sites is just the start. At The Romanos, you can partake in Messinian cooking classes, wine and olive oil tastings, guided art and philosophy tours, and more, gaining a new appreciation for one of Europe’s oldest cultures.

Retreat into wellness and harness the restorative benefits of travel.

Westin Maui Resort & Spa Ka’anapali — U.S.A.

Situated on Maui’s picturesque west coast, Westin Maui Resort & Spa Ka’anapali recently underwent an expansive renovation that touched nearly every corner of the beachfront property, including its public areas, guest suites, and a new luxury Hōkūpaʻa tower. The lavish 15,000 square-foot Heavenly Spa by Westin also received a facelift. It’s an unrivaled setting for an array of multisensory treatments and rejuvenating therapies, from soothing CBD facials to romantic couples massages. Skilled attendants employ authentic Hawaiian wellness principles and products from the spa’s custom Hualani line to promote relaxation and mind-body alignment.

JW Marriott El Convento Cusco — Peru

Staying at JW Marriott El Convento Cusco is certainly a pinch-me experience. Not only are you resting your head inside a former 16th-century convent surrounded by ancient artifacts, but with an exclusive spa rooted in Inca wellness traditions, you’ll return home renewed and refreshed. All spaces inside the JW Spa are designated quiet areas, with a special mindful spot located in an outdoor patio surrounded by herbs and spices. In addition to personalized experiences and treatments inspired by age-old Andean medicinal practices, arrival amenities are also connected to local rituals, including a kit to make an offering to Mother Earth.

Reconnect with loved ones and strengthen bonds with the entire family.

The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe — U.S.A.

When it comes to ensuring families have the trip of a lifetime, The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe means business. The luxury resort’s concierge provides a seamless introduction to the best of family-friendly Tahoe, from ski-in, ski-out access to Northstar Mountain and Burton Snowboard Academy in the winter to summertime adventures in nearby historic towns and on Northern California’s prestigious golf courses. Oh, and there’s also a heated pool open year-round for the kiddos—and you—to enjoy.

JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort & Spa — U.S.A.

JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort & Spa has all the trappings of an unforgettable family getaway: two 18-hole championship courses for dad, a full-service spa for mom, and the sprawling Tidal Cover Water Park for the little ones. The five-acre aquatic playground is home to a series of spiraling waterslides, plus freefall loops, gravity-defying raft rides, and a lazy river. The greatest highlights? A 60-foot seven-slide water slide and, for those looking to shred some gnarly surf, the first-ever Flowrider Triple wave machine. Back at the resort, the Turnberry Kids camp offers supervised arts and crafts, sports, and custom fitness classes.

Embrace your individuality and rediscover your passions.

W Doha — Qatar

Exploring one of the world’s most futuristic cities requires a home base that inspires creativity through daring design and run-ins with like-minded people. At W Doha, Qatar’s iconic lifestyle hotel, you’ll catch both guests and locals mingling surrounded by sweeping views of the city skyline in the buzzy lobby or at the outdoor lounge, Wahm. Food lovers will also be happy to learn that the hotel’s restaurants, Market and Spice Markets by Jean-Georges Vongerichten, COYA, and La Spiga by Paper Moon, are major hotspots on the Doha dining scene.

Moxy Times Square — U.S.A.

It says a lot when local New Yorkers, a group that notoriously eschews Times Square, will head to the frenetic entertainment district just to chill at the Moxy Hotel. Designed by powerhouse firm Yabu Pushelberg, the ultra-contemporary Moxy Times Square is a next-gen hospitality emporium with 612 calming micro suites outfitted with smart technology, four dining venues by TAO Group, and the city’s largest all-season indoor/outdoor hotel rooftop lounge. At its essence, the Moxy is Midtown Manhattan, elevated.

Whether you’re ready to unleash your wanderlust solo in new places—or see old mainstays in a new light with the entire family—now is the time to take those bucket-list trips that have so far remained inside the realm of daydream fodder. Partner with Marriott Bonvoy to discover the world’s most fascinating destinations and all the life-enhancing experiences that await.

Transformative Travel: Six Stories of Life-Changing Trips

travel and leisure 7 life changing vacations

By Esme Benjamin

This month at FTT we are exploring how travel influences our identities in ways both big and small. Sometimes it’s as simple as finally taking a bucket list trip and examining first-hand why you’ve always been inexplicably, deeply drawn to that particular place. Sometimes we set out on a physical journey hoping it will spark an interior journey, bringing us clarity, closure or a much-needed fresh perspective. Occasionally, travel sends our lives in a direction we never expected, leaving us profoundly changed and embarking on an entirely new chapter.

On the subject of identity-shaping travel, I’d be remiss not to highlight our podcast. Since The Trip That Changed Me launched two years ago, I’ve had the privilege of speaking with fascinating people – from founders to chefs and from writers to philanthropists – about a transformative travel experience that altered their life’s trajectory. Each guest’s story emphasizes just how significantly travel helps us to meet new sides of ourselves and figure out what’s truly important.

Below are six episodes to get you started, but there are 30 more on Apple podcasts or Spotify to inspire you. Listen while you’re driving/doing chores/cooking/taking a walk, and get excited for all the ways your own future adventures will shape the person you become.

Paris with New York Times -bestselling poet Atticus: fame, vulnerability, and the joy of skinny dipping

travel and leisure 7 life changing vacations

You might be familiar with the anonymous poet known as Atticus, author of three New York Times- bestselling books and a popular Instagram account with 1.6 million followers. What you may not know is how he made the move from disillusioned TV producer to one of the most successful poets of our time.

In this episode, Atticus reveals more of his backstory and artistic origins, including a meeting with Hollywood “bad guy” Michael Madsen ( Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill, Donnie Brasco ), who encouraged him to begin writing, and the fleeting moment in Paris that inspired his very first poem (spoiler alert: it involves an encounter with a beautiful woman). The trip highlighted a talent for words he didn’t know he had. One that would turn his new passion into a lucrative career and catapult him to fame without ever revealing his true identity.

Ethiopia with chef marcus samuelsson: cooking as a love language, cultural contrasts, and connecting to our roots.

travel and leisure 7 life changing vacations

It’s fair to say that Marcus Samuelsson is one of America’s most beloved and successful chefs. He's the youngest person ever to receive a three-star review from the New York Times and the winner of multiple James Beard awards, including one for his PBS show No Passport Required . He’s been a judge on the Food Network’s Chopped , authored several best-selling books and runs multiple restaurants around the world.

In this episode, Marcus shares the deeply personal experiences that shaped the man he is today. Marcus, who was adopted by a Swedish couple after his mother tragically died of tuberculosis , had a loving and happy upbringing. It wasn’t until he was an adult, settled with a career and a family, that he eventually returned to Ethiopia to meet his birth father for the very first time. His moving story speaks to the importance of establishing a connection with our roots – be it a person, a place, or an idea.

Cambodia with philanthropist Scott Neeson: making it in Hollywood, following your instincts, and the secret to a life well lived

travel and leisure 7 life changing vacations

As a young man living in an Australian town with a high unemployment rate, Scott Neeson managed to get an entry-level job as a movie theater projectionist. From there had one of those legendary ascents to the role of President of 20th Century Fox International in California. It was as glamorous as you’d imagine (think private jets with Hollywood’s biggest actors) but suddenly seemed insignificant after a trip to Cambodia in 2004.

Shaken by a visit to a landfill where he saw hundreds of children scavenging to survive, Scott left his Hollywood career, moved to Phnom Penh, and founded the Cambodian Children’s Fund , an organization that now educates almost 2000 children and supports families with community-based projects. In this episode, Scott discusses the celebrity tantrum that gave him the nudge needed to quit and pursue his calling in Cambodia, the meaningful milestones that make the sleepless nights worthwhile, and the real secret to a happy life well lived.

Bhutan with author eric weiner: karma, wisdom quests and the truth about happiness.

travel and leisure 7 life changing vacations

It was a good old fashioned mid-life crisis that sent Eric Weiner on a life-changing journey. Feeling unfulfilled and wondering if there might be more to life than his 9-6 routine, Eric came up with the idea for his first book: The Geography of Bliss .

The project took him on a tour of the world’s most contented countries, including Bhutan, a country famous for its Gross National Happiness index and laid-back pace. It was there he met Karma, a Buddhist monk and academic who changed how Eric saw the world and understood his own search for happiness.

Bucket List Trips with athlete Chris Pronger & his wife/business partner Lauren: wellness retreats, living your dreams, and the healing power of travel

travel and leisure 7 life changing vacations

Hockey fans will know Chris Pronger as a legendary NHL defenseman – winner of multiple awards including the Hart Trophy, the Norris Trophy, and two winter olympics gold medals. His wife Lauren is a graduate of the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and the founder of Well Inspired Travels, a boutique travel company (and family business) that curates 5-star trips with a health and wellness mindset.

Before launching Well Inspired Travels , Chris and Lauren each had brushes with injury and life-threatening illness that served to highlight the ways travel and quality time with the people you love can aid healing. In this episode, the Prongers discuss their health-driven travel experiences, the convergence of their individual passions, and how travel contributes to our sense of wellbeing.

Paris with baker/entrepreneur Jackie Kai Ellis: fighting depression, patisserie school, and why it’s never too late to start over

travel and leisure 7 life changing vacations

By society’s measures, Jackie Kai Ellis had an extremely successful life in her late-twenties. She was a designer living with her husband in the beautiful city of Vancouver, yet Jackie was struggling with depression and felt emptier than ever, trapped in a never-ending cycle of external validation.

On this episode, Jackie shares the circumstances that led her to enroll in a Parisian patisserie school – an experience that restored joy for life and, most importantly, her sense of self. Jackie went on to separate from her husband, launch her own bakery , write a cookbook and a memoir, and eventually relocate to Paris to start another business: The Paris Tours . Listen for Jackie's thoughts on how traveling forces you to be more present, the scariest part of making a massive life change, and why following your dreams, no matter how unrealistic they may seem, is the greatest privilege of all.

25 enriching travel experiences that will change your life.

From saving a species to expanding your skills (and your mind), there’s always a good reason to get away – and if you can’t think of one, read on as we round up the trips that may change your life…

1: Travel alone

Setting off on a solo adventure in Turkey (Dreamstime)

Setting off on a solo adventure in Turkey (Dreamstime)

No compromises, no limitations, no back-up. Travelling by yourself can be daunting but empowering; there is no greater freedom. You’ll have to rely on your own wits, but you can do whatever you want – and you might discover more about yourself along the way.

Where? Newbie solos can play it safe in regions well set up for travellers: English-speaking Australia and New Zealand; laid-back South-East Asia; South America’s ‘gringo trail’. Frenetic India or lesser-trodden West Africa or Central Asia provide bigger challenges.

Take our advice: Stay open to other people – put that book down, choose a seat at the bar, strike up conversations. Who knows what might happen? But remember to have fun.

2: Travel with strangers

Taking a punt on people you don't know: A group climbing Kilimanjaro (Dreamstime)

Taking a punt on people you don't know: A group climbing Kilimanjaro (Dreamstime)

Our best friends don’t necessarily make our best travel companions – it can be more fun and less fractious to join like-minded strangers instead. So sign up for a small-group trip, especially one with a clear focus. Sharing a particular interest or goal – whether that’s a physical challenge or a shared love of opera – will help you and your new travel-mates bond. You may even make new friends for life.

Where? Small-group trips probe all corners of the globe; they’re especially useful for taking the hassle out of travel to remote or bureaucratic destinations. Enjoy the team spirit of a Kilimanjaro climb, the cheerful camaraderie of a hands-on Outback camping trip (perhaps overlanding across the Kimberley in rugged Western Australia) or the mutual appreciation of an expert-led art tour in Italy.

Take our advice: Be ready to compromise – if you accept a group trip won’t be 100% perfect, you’ll definitely enjoy it much more.

3: Take a self-propelled journey

Feel the freedom of travelling under you own steam on a walk along the South West Coast Path (Shutterstock)

Feel the freedom of travelling under you own steam on a walk along the South West Coast Path (Shutterstock)

You experience a place differently when you travel more slowly. Travelling on foot, by bike or in a kayak, you see more, soak up more; you can access out-of-the-way places, meet more local people. There’s also a sense of freedom in being in charge of your pace, detours and destination. It’s more the kind of travel associated with early explorers, with a sense of discovery to match.

Where? A continuous long-distance hike delivers a big buzz, so maybe try England’s spectacularly undulating South West Coast Path or Patagonia’s W Trek. Novice cyclists should consider a flat, traffic-free ride such as France’s château-dotted River Loire or New Zealand’s Otago Central Rail Trail, or maybe channel Canada’s early gold-rush prospectors by canoeing the Yukon River.

Take our advice: Look into companies that transport your luggage while you undertake your adventure, so you can travel lighter.

4: Go epic on your doorstep

Plot big adventures close to home: Camping on the shores of Dunvegan Loch, Scotland (Shutterstock)

You can enjoy world-class experiences without even leaving the country. Not only is there plenty of great stuff here, there are ways of making even the everyday seem like an adventure. Add a twist or head a little out of your comfort zone and even the streets you know best can blow your mind.

Where? Your doorstep. Wild camp atop the nearest hill, take a hike after dark, paddle your local river, cycle the edge of your county – micro-adventures are everywhere!

Take our advice: Try something you’ve never done before – maybe your first wild swim, 50km hike or nocturnal wildlife stakeout.

5: Do something after dark

Challenge your senses by exploring at night by participating in a night dive searching for manta rays, Hawaii (Shutterstock)

Challenge your senses by exploring at night by participating in a night dive searching for manta rays, Hawaii (Shutterstock)

Whether you’re on a walk, dive, drive or safari, everything feels different when the lights go out. Your senses become more alert, familiar objects feel alien, different animals come out to play and you get a new perspective. It can also be a little bit scary – but it’s no bad thing to spook yourself.

Where? Night safaris in African game parks yield a different crew of creatures. Good spots for night dives include Hawaii’s Kona coast (for manta rays) and the Maldives.

Take our advice: If you’re afraid, look for guided activities – for example, the Sierra Club leads evening hikes in LA’s Griffith Park.

6: Don’t just visit, engage

Become part of the community by staying in a ger with Mongolian Nomads (Shutterstock)

By getting involved with local life – whether that’s signing up as a volunteer or spending time in a family home – you’ll be viewed less as a tourist, more as a fellow human being. This means gaining a more authentic cultural insight; you won’t learn only about a destination’s landscapes and architecture but also about the people who make it tick.

Where? Volunteering opportunities are worldwide, but it pays to seek a cause you’re passionate about and a project where your presence is helpful. Alternatively, trek with Berbers in Morocco, stay in a ger with Mongolian nomads or book into a casa particular (homestay) in Cuba.

Take our advice: If staying with a family, know the local rules – what you should wear, how to eat. It’s respectful to know the social norms, such as the local word for ‘thank you’.

Life-changing travel moments

 simon reeve.

“Glencoe in Scotland was my first real adventure after I left school. I’d never been anything like that distance on my own before. When I arrived it was too late in the day to go anywhere. But I thought I’d go for a quick hike. When I started my journey I was an insecure teenager. But the climb changed me. I passed hikers and climbers on the way. More than one eyebrow was raised. I reached the ridge in the dark, and stood there feeling euphoric and a bit brave. I made it down unscathed and spent a freezing night in the car, but I didn’t care. I was elated.”

Hilary Bradt

“In 1964, I went to see a production of Ibsen’s The Master Builder, but I’d muddled the dates and instead saw a new play called The Royal Hunt of the Sun, about the conquest of the Incas. I knew nothing about Peru but wanted to learn more. I found out that there were still Inca ruins there, so I took a job to earn money for a South America trip. Five years later, I stood gazing down on Machu Picchu; another five years on and I returned with my husband to write a backpacking guide to Peru that started Bradt Travel Guides.”

7: Join the crowd

While escaping from the masses is often a good thing, sometimes it’s better to join in. There’s nothing quite like being swept up in a great gathering – you’ll see the local people letting their hair down, performing old rituals, cooking up specialities and honouring their saints, relatives, spirits or samba bands. Noisy, hectic, messy mayhem? Quite possibly. Informative fun? Hell yeah!

Where? It’s best when you happen upon a local knees-up, but you might want to plan ahead to make sure you’re in the right place at the right time to ‘play mas’ (joining a masquerade band) at Trinidad Carnival, get paint-splattered at Holi in India or booze it up at Munich’s Oktoberfest.

Take our advice: Hook up with a local who can fill you in on the event dos and don’ts.

8: Eyeball an animal

Get up close to the most impressive species, such as polar bear in Svalbard (Shutterstock)

Get up close to the most impressive species, such as polar bear in Svalbard (Shutterstock)

Coming face to face with a big, beautiful, powerful creature will put you firmly in your place. Also, the best wildlife experiences often happen in the most beautiful spots. Prepare to feel awed, vulnerable and humbled – and maybe even question your responsibility to the planet.

Where? Head to Rwanda or Uganda to track mountain gorillas, spot tigers in India, look for jaguars in the Brazilian Pantanal, cruise Svalbard for polar bears or snorkel with whale sharks in Western Australia.

Take our advice: Appreciate little critters, too – a good guide will point out smaller, equally enthralling wildlife wonders.

9: Make a personal pilgrimage

Follow your passion, whatever it may be, like these pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago, Spain (Dreamstime)

Follow your passion, whatever it may be, like these pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago, Spain (Dreamstime)

For some, it’s saying a prayer in the Vatican’s St Peter’s Basilica. For others, it’s eating a peanut butter-and-bacon sandwich by Elvis’s Graceland grave. We all have our passions – follow yours.

Where? The Camino de Santiago is the classic pilgrimage trail, but you might find more spirituality on the UK’s St Cuthbert’s Way or the Via Francigena to Rome. Music fans might like to hit the Blues Highway from Nashville to New Orleans, while bookworms could follow in Phileas Fogg’s footsteps.

Take our advice: Don’t be dissuaded. If you really want to visit the childhood home of every Beatle, just go ahead and do it.

10: Learn something new

A sitar player in India (Shutterstock)

Studying while you’re overseas could change your life – maybe you’ll enjoy your PADI course so much that you’ll ditch your day job to become a diving instructor. Even if it doesn’t, it will give you new, potentially useful skills, whether they be conversational French, bread-making or salsa dancing. Chances are you’ll gain a deeper insight into everyday life, too.

Where? Learning a language in a country in which it’s spoken is more beneficial and fun – try Spanish lessons in Guatemala or a combination Portuguese-and-samba course in Brazil. Learn sitar-playing in India, cowboy skills in Montana or gelato-making in Italy.

Take our advice: Stay with a local family during your learning holiday, so you’re fully immersed in the language and culture.

11: Travel slowly

Relish rather than rush by planning a culinary break in Italy's Piedmont region (Dreamstime)

Relish rather than rush by planning a culinary break in Italy's Piedmont region (Dreamstime)

Heed the words of Carl Honoré, author of In Praise of Slow , who writes: “The Slow philosophy is… about seeking to do everything at the right speed. Savouring the hours and minutes rather than just counting them. Doing everything as well as possible, instead of as fast as possible.” Apply that to your travels: linger longer in one place rather than dashing from spot to spot; eat sustainably, regionally and seasonally; take the time to chat, absorb, walk and explore. It can lead to geographically limited but arguably more enlightening experiences.

Where? Plan a glorious culinary break in Italy’s Piedmont region, HQ of the Slow Food movement. Alternatively, cruise along Alaska’s Inside Passage, walk between villages in the Indian Himalaya or hire a city apartment for a fortnight to blend in locally.

Take our advice: Trust in serendipity – put the guidebook and smartphone down for a while and just see where life takes you.

12: Seek out a spiritual place

Visit a site that will succour your soul, like the temples of Kyoto, Japan (Dreamstime)

Visit a site that will succour your soul, like the temples of Kyoto, Japan (Dreamstime)

‘Spiritual’ means different things to different people. It might mean worshipping a deity at a temple or even immersing yourself in the wilderness, so that you feel a connection to nature. Some places just have a way of seeping into your being; of making you ask new questions about yourself, about others, maybe even human existence as a whole.

Where? Choose a site filled with devotees, such as the ghats (riverside steps) of India’s holy city of Varanasi or the temples of Kyoto, Japan. Or seek the spirituality of nature on a stroll around Tibet’s Mount Kailash or a camp-out at Australia’s Uluru.

Take our advice: Remain respectful. Don’t cross off-limits areas and ask if there is a dress code or if an offering is required.

Life-changing travel moments

Mark carwardine.

“I was just out of university and in California f or the summer when I went on a whale-watching trip. For the first two hours, there was nothing – I didn’t see a thing. And then suddenly, without any warning at all, a grey whale – it must have been 40 foot long – leapt out of the water. I was 21 at the time, but I still remember it in slow-motion: this whale appearing out of nowhere and falling back into the water with a huge splash. I remember thinking: this is what I want to do with the rest of my life! It all came from that one moment.”

Jonathan & Angela Scott

Jonathon:  “So what do the ‘Big Cat People’ do when they’re not tracking wildlife in Africa? We’re not divers but we love snorkelling. Angie, my wife, was born in Alexandria in Egypt but brought up on the coast of Tanzania. So, when we were in Tonga and our friend and fellow wildlife photographer Griet Van Malderen invited us to join her to swim with humpback whales, we were overjoyed.

“This was something Angie had always wanted to do, though I had a bit of a problem putting on a facemask because of my moustache – I basically swallowed a lot of ocean water. But we did have some unforgettable encounters. One moment in particular was absolutely sensational, and so different to the wildlife we normally encounter in the savannah – for both of us, it was life-changing.”

Angela: “I hadn’t been in the water for more than a few minutes when, looking down into the blue, this mother and calf materialised out of the depths towards me. It was as if time had slowed and all my senses were wrapped in that moment – one I will cherish forever. This photograph captures perfectly a kinder, more considerate and loving relationship between humans and their wild relatives.”

13: Go on a massive journey

Don't just settle for a quick getaway – extend your travels. Try exploring India by rail (Dreamstime)

Don't just settle for a quick getaway – extend your travels. Try exploring India by rail (Dreamstime)

A two-week trip provides a fantastic dose of otherness. So just imagine how much better it might be to go for longer: a month, six months, six years! Extended travelling doesn’t just mean covering more ground, it provokes an all-round attitude shift. You can ultimately move more slowly and take more detours; you’re also forced to cope with catastrophes and, at times, even boredom. Eventually, though, you will start to forget the stresses of home and sink into a different mindset. It’s the ultimate freedom.

Where? Everywhere! Maybe attempt a round-the-world trip, stopping off in Asia, Australia and the USA. Or perhaps focus on one region, such as India by rail, overlanding in South America or walking across the whole of Europe.

Take our advice: Don’t over-plan – things will always go awry in some way. Have a basic itinerary, but allow wiggle room for spontaneity and cock-ups.

14: Go far from anywhere

Travel somewhere truly off the grid like the Namib Desert (Dreamstime)

Travel somewhere truly off the grid like the Namib Desert (Dreamstime)

According to a 2018 Ofcom report, Brits spend an average of 24 hours a week on the internet. Just think how you could be spending that day. Take a digital detox by going completely off-grid; travel somewhere wild and remote to free yourself from the online world and enjoy engaging with the real world instead.

Where? Tourists aren’t allowed online in North Korea. Or feel your own insignificance in an enormous wilderness such as the Canadian Yukon, the high Himalaya, the Namib Desert or the Amazon.

Take our advice: You can find internet access in even the most unlikely places these days, so self-discipline may be required. At least disable social media and leave your phone for emergencies only.

15: Travel creatively

Turn your journey into a memorable piece of art, like making a video of a cycle trip across Asia (Shutterstock)

Turn your journey into a memorable piece of art, like making a video of a cycle trip across Asia (Shutterstock)

We all like taking holiday snaps, but how about taking your creativity a little further? Write a blog or travelogue, paint a picture, pen a song or make a video about your trip and it will force you to look at everything differently; to consider other angles and perspectives; to really look. Plus, you’ll have a unique souvenir at the end.

Where? Book a trip specifically focused on a creative pursuit, such as an art safari in Malawi or a travel-writing retreat in Spain. Or perhaps try making a short film of a long-distance cycle trip across Asia.

Take our advice: Don’t get hung up on quality, just create. Write, sketch or compose whatever comes into your head – you can edit it into perfection afterwards.

16: Be wowed by nature

Delight in the planet's most dazzling spectacles, such as the northern lights in Finland (Dreamstime)

Delight in the planet's most dazzling spectacles, such as the northern lights in Finland (Dreamstime)

For all humankind’s incredible inventions, there are many natural phenomena that knock them all for six. No movie special effect can match seeing first-hand the magical sky-dance of the aurora borealis (or aurora australis – if you’re in the southern hemisphere), the ethereal glow of bioluminescence, the flash and fury of a lightning storm or the rage of a tornado. Witnessing any one of these will make you bow down to Mother Nature.

Where? For aurora thrills, head to the light-pollution-free, less cloudy parts of the Arctic Circle – Abisko in Sweden, Finnish Lapland. For bioluminescence try visiting the lagoons in Puerto Rico and Tobago.

Take our advice: Increase your chances of sightings with planning and research: bioluminescence is brighter around a new moon; aurora regions issue forecasts predicting the likelihood of displays.

17: Follow an ancient trail

Feel the force of our forebears by cycling along the remains of the Berlin Wall (Shutterstock)

Feel the force of our forebears by cycling along the remains of the Berlin Wall (Shutterstock)

Tracing the routes of erstwhile explorers, emigrants, merchants, monarchs, pioneers and pilgrims offers a connection back to the past. Following their formative footsteps brings the history of the world to life, and can imbue your modern-day travels with greater meaning.

Where? Hike Hadrian’s Wall or the 15th-century paving slabs of Peru’s Inca Trail, or even cycle graffitied concrete remains along the Berlin Wall Trail. Plot an overland expedition along the Silk Road or from St Louis to the Pacific in the wake of Lewis and Clark, whose 1808 expedition first opened up the western USA. Or just bag a flight to the ultimate explorer homage: the South Pole.

Take our advice: Read up before you go, and know how to recognise a strip lynchet (earth terrace), Roman road, Neolithic tomb or a caravanserai (old inn).

18: Do something for the first time

Invigorate your travels by doing something for the first new, such as stand-up paddleboarding in Greece (Shutterstock)

Invigorate your travels by doing something for the first new, such as stand-up paddleboarding in Greece (Shutterstock)

Don’t go back to the same old places in the same old ways. Head to a country you’ve never visited, use a mode of transport you’ve never tried, eat a dish you can’t pronounce – and have the time of your life.

Where? The travelsphere is always dreaming up adventures. Try stand-up paddleboarding in the Greek Islands, fatbiking over the UAE’s dunes or using an app such as EatWith to join a dinner party in Paris.

Take our advice: These days it’s easy to find unique experiences. Follow local bloggers/ papers on social media to see what’s new.

Life-changing moments

Kate humble.

“My most formative life-changing experience was going to South Africa in the late 1980s. I went to a township called Alexandra and walked around with a young black man who took me to meet his family. All I’d heard about apartheid South Africa was that black people hated white people and vice versa. What I discovered was that could not have been less true, and that human beings have an amazing capacity for joy, even in difficult circumstances. It made me think: don’t just believe what you read – go and experience it for yourself.”

Simon Calder

“To my wide-eyed amazement, the Woodcraft Folk organisation volunteered to take a six-year-old from the streets of Crawley to the wonders of Westmorland (Cumbria) for a week’s camping. After one day exploring a landscape carved by rivers and dry stone walls, I became lost amid brooding fells and stormy skies, and I learned travellers can rely on the kindness of strangers. Decades later, I have been lost and rescued many times. I am no better at lighting a fire from twigs than I was when I was six. But I am always thankful for the Woodcraft Folk.”

19: Scare yourself

Push your limits for the most memorable experiences – you could walk one of China's glass suspension bridges (Shutterstock)

Push your limits for the most memorable experiences – you could walk one of China's glass suspension bridges (Shutterstock)

Leaving your comfort zone is how you learn and grow – you’ll be surprised what you’re capable of. Travel encourages such boundary pushing, and can build confidence. Embrace it!

Where? Arachnophobes could sleep in a hammock in the Amazon. Heights-haters could walk across a glass suspension bridges in China. You could even cage dive with great whites off South Africa.

Take our advice: There’s no need to utterly terrify yourself – pick a challenge that will ultimately give you a buzz, not a coronary.

20: Sleep under the stars

Stare up at the heavens to reset your world view in Jordan's Wadi Rum (Dreamstime)

Stare up at the heavens to reset your world view in Jordan's Wadi Rum (Dreamstime)

There’s nothing like contemplating the huge, dark unknowableness of the universe for putting us in our place. It’s a reminder of how teeny-tiny we are. It’s also healthy to get away from light-polluted civilisation, not to mention how magical it is to lie back and be dazzled by a billion stars.

Where? Official International Dark Sky Reserves – such as Jasper in Canada or Namibia’s NamibRand – are a good start. Wild camp on Exmoor, spend a night with Bedouin in Jordan’s Wadi Rum or splash out on a five-star safari lodge that has four-poster beds you can wheel outside.

Take our advice: Download an astronomy app such as Night Sky to help you identify the stars. Consider coordinating your sleep-out with the next meteor shower.

21: Abandon your inhibitions

Go on – throw caution to the wind! Try an onsen in Japan where no clothes are allowed (Shutterstock)

Go on – throw caution to the wind! Try an onsen in Japan where no clothes are allowed (Shutterstock)

Us Brits can be a reserved bunch. But away from the social conventions and judging eyes of our brethren, why not loosen up a little? No one knows you, after all. So go for that skinny dip, shake your stuff at the local festival, sing like no one’s listening in that packed karaoke bar. Set yourself free!

Where? Swim naked on the azure-lapped beaches of the Greek isles. Steam in a Japanese onsen (clothing not allowed). Dance outrageously at a Rio Carnival bloco (street party), learn how to haka (war dance) in New Zealand or hit Havana’s salsa clubs.

Take our advice: While it’s good to let go, be sure not to break any laws at the same time. Not all beaches welcome birthday suits...

22: Save a species

Help conserve wildlife by paying them a visit: Look for elephants in Africa (Dreamstime)

Help conserve wildlife by paying them a visit: Look for elephants in Africa (Dreamstime)

The rallying cry of many conservation organisations is that animals are ‘worth more alive’. Prove that’s true by going to see the species that need help. Your presence – and pounds sterling – can help convince local communities and governments that there is value in protecting habitats. Tourism can be a powerful force in providing the kind of incentives that may turn hardened poachers into potential tour guides and threatened landscapes into national parks.

Where? Spotting turtles in Tortuguero, on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, can have huge local benefits. One year of turtle-based tourism here can generate around US$6.5 million (£5m), says the World Wildlife Fund. Alternatively, spend your days looking for elephants in Africa. According to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, a live elephant is worth US$22,966 (£17,750) a year to the local economy through eco-tourism.

Take our advice: Do your research and use guides and companies that offer sustainable and responsible animal interactions.

23: Travel for the greater good

Put your money where it's needed, when its needed: visit earthquake recovering Nepal (Dreamstime)

Put your money where it's needed, when its needed: visit earthquake recovering Nepal (Dreamstime)

After a natural disaster or terrorist attack, an entire country is often struck off the travel map. Sometimes the Foreign Office (FCO) warns against returning – and these warnings should be heeded when in effect. But sometimes it’s only media hype that keeps travellers away, which can leave local people dealing not only with the initial disaster but loss of livelihood, too. By visiting such places, you might have to cope with a less-than-perfect infrastructure but you’re also assured the warmest of welcomes.

Where? Dominica, Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands hit by 2017’s devastating hurricanes; earthquake-recovering Nepal; rebounding Egypt and Tunisia, most of which is now off the FCO no-go list.

Take our advice: Don’t go back too soon – in the immediate aftermath of a disaster, your presence may be more of a hindrance.

Nick Baker

"On the Katmai peninsula in Alaska, a brown bear sauntered to within a couple of metres of me, gave a loud ‘harrumph’, as if utterly unimpressed by my presence, then strolled back to hooking salmon out of the river with his great paws. In that single moment, I not only felt more alive than I had ever done before, but my whole life and all the wildlife I’d experienced prior to this suddenly made sense. I finally understood what the true definition of ‘wild’ was, and also how it was missing from most of our lives.”

Michael Palin

“There was one voyage that changed the way that I looked at the world: going from Dubai to Mumbai on a dhow boat. It was in 1988, a time before sat nav and mobile phones, and as we made our way down the Gulf, through the Strait of Hormuz and across the Arabian Sea, we were entirely dependent on our crew of 16 Gujaratis, only one of whom spoke any English. But we struck up a rapport, and I was a different person after that journey. My guard was down and my fear of the unknown had begun to evaporate.”

25: And finally, travel more!

Get away as often as you can (Shutterstock)

Get away as often as you can (Shutterstock)

Nothing opens your mind, broadens your horizons and revives your body and soul quite like travel. Exposure to new sites, societies and experiences is formative in the best of ways, we believe, so do it as often as you can. Forgo buying designer shoes and fancy meals and save for trips instead – when you look back years later, you’ll surely have far fonder memories of your time spent abroad than of a half-forgotten pair of Gucci brogues. Find creative ways to carve out more time or money for travel, or simply squeeze in little microadventures where you can. Negotiate a four-day week, so you can set off on mini-breaks; stockpile holiday for a big trip; work out of a campervan while you’re on the road; or maybe housesit for locals when they go abroad. There’s always a way!

Where? Everywhere!

These 25 Couple Vacations Will Change Your Life!

One of the best parts of being in a relationship is having a built-in travel buddy and these are the best couples vacations to plan..

These 25 Couple Vacations Will Change Your Life!

One of the best parts of being in a relationship is having a built-in travel buddy, and one of the best parts of travelling with that built-in buddy is getting unobstructed one-on-one time while exploring different parts of the world. Whether domestic or international couple vacation, a trip with your significant other almost always guarantees sharing exciting experiences and learning something new about each other, like that your girlfriend gets a rush from cliff diving or your boyfriend can make friends with anyone despite only being able to say one phrase in the local language. By Claudia Fisher

It’s easy to uncover sides of your partner, and maybe even yourself, you haven’t seen before when you’re having many first-time experiences together. Plus, travel allows couples to access a different kind of closeness than that of regular daily life.

When deciding where to venture with your significant other, you’ll want to consider which components of a romantic getaway matter most to you, from interesting sites and adventurous activities to intimate settings and stunning views. Couples looking for a chance to fully unwind together might choose a beach vacation or spa weekend in a beautiful destination, while those searching for that once-in-a-lifetime experience may want to finally book that African safari or a trip to seek out the northern lights. Foodie couples will want to eat their way through Paris’s fine restaurants or sip through scenic Portugal, while active travellers might prefer a ski trip or snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef.

Whatever your travel style, here are 25 of the best couple vacations.

Bali, Indonesia

couple vacations

Bali , aka the “Island of the Gods,” is a versatile haven with something to offer every type of couple. If your version of romance is hiking through lush greenery, monkey forests, and rolling rice paddies, you’re in luck. If you think romance is dancing to DJ sets and light shows until the wee hours of the morning, Bali is also known for its nightlife scene. And if you’re all about beaches, the island’s bevvy of beaches range from white-sanded shores on the south coast to the more unexpected black sand you’ll see on the northern and western coasts.

In addition to the historic temples and shrines Bali is known for, the island is also home to high-end resorts, yoga classes, spas, and Australian-influenced cafes.

Santorini, Greece

Greece

Santorini is a cloud-like oasis that envelops travellers in an ethereal fantasy, so it’s no surprise it’s a popular choice among newlyweds looking for a picture-perfect honeymoon destination. The romance of the island pretty much sells itself; wandering the hilly, weathered streets, you’re surrounded by bright white walls and blue roofs, and in the evenings you have front-row seats to incredible sunsets. Once the sun is down, the city lights up and the houses, churches, and restaurants glow like stars.

Safari in Tanzania

couple vacations

Aside from travelling to Tanzania to hike the intimidating Mount Kilimanjaro, many visit the country because of the incredible wildlife conservation sites and national parks. Going on safari allows you and your significant other to share some firsts: the first time you see a lion, the first time you drive across the African plains dotted with baobab trees, the first time you meet someone from a local tribe. You’ll definitely want to visit Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest inactive and intact volcanic caldera. The bowl-like shape makes a natural border for the animals, boosting the chances safari-goers will be able to spot all of the Big Five — lion, cheetah, rhino, elephant, and buffalo — during a tour. Serengeti National Park is another popular safari destination because of the area’s mass seasonal migrations of wildebeest and zebra, large lion population, and diversity of habitats and animals.

Tulum, Mexico

couple vacations

Two core pillars of many romantic couple vacations are intimate settings and exciting experiences, and Tulum has a lot of both. You can rotate between lounging out on tropical beaches, snorkelling at the nearby “aquatic theme park,” Xel-Ha Park, swimming in a natural sinkhole (or cenote), and touring the Mayan ruins, which make up one of the most intact sites of their kind. After a day packed with leisure, adventure, or both, the cherry on top will be a drink at a bar that feels more like a jungle .

Whistler, Canada

Canada

A great way to bond as a couple is by getting active, and skiing on Whistler and Blackcomb mountains is great for both veteran and beginner skiers alike. You can take on the mountains, with numerous trails of varying intensity, enjoy an overhead view of the snow-capped trees from sprawling gondolas, break for lunch at the mid-mountain lodge, and top off the day with an après ski at one of the slope-side bars. If one day of skiing leaves you with wobbly legs and your fill of downhill action, there’s a lot more action at the base of the peaks. Whistler Village is a lively, pedestrian-only hub of bars, shops, and restaurants. The little winter wonderland is as charming as the inside of a snow globe, and what’s better for a romantic getaway than that?

Cappadocia, Turkey

couple vacations

For a fairy-tale couple vacation, there’s nothing more fitting than a landscape dotted with literal “fairy chimneys.” In addition to fairy chimneys, which are tall, thin rock cones dotting the rock sites of Cappadocia, cave churches, underground cities, and homes carved into rocks create a whimsical aura usually reserved for the fictional realm. Floating high above the rocky terrain in a brightly-designed hot air balloon, you’ll feel like characters wandering the pages of a Dr Seuss book or like astronauts discovering a civilisation on the moon — either way, the other-worldly experience will have you recapturing childlike wonder and awe together.

Paris, France

France

Most clichés became clichés for a reason, and so is the case with Paris’ romantic reputation. Looking at pictures of couples in the City of Light, you can practically see the cartoon hearts in their eyes as they embrace in front of the Eiffel Tower . Paris and romance go together like Valentine’s Day and chocolate, anniversary dinners and candlelit bistros, marriage proposals and world-famous landmarks… all of which Paris is not-so-coincidentally known for having.

Hakone, Japan

couple vacations

While not as romanticised for cherry-blossomed strolls as its nearby neighbour, Kyoto, Hakone is a day trip away from Tokyo that offers an intimate escape from city travel in the most relaxing way possible: hot springs resorts. Aside from relaxing in onsen (hot springs) at a traditional ryokan (Japanese inn), you can take advantage of the natural sites, like Lake Ashi and the volcano Mount Fuji, or tour the fire engine red Hakone Shrine and the open-air sculpture museum . The many transportation options also seem more like mini adventures than a straightforward means of travel, from boats and cable cars to rolling train routes through the mountains.

Northern Lights Seeking in Northern Norway

If you’ve ever considered stargazing a romantic experience, northern Norway really ups the ante with its unbelievable events in the sky. The region, which covers about one-third of Norway, is considered a top destination to see the northern lights from autumn to mid-April, while from May to July, the sun is still visible late at night in a phenomenon called the “midnight sun.” Venture even farther north — if you dare — to Svalbard, the northernmost inhabited region of Europe, to experience 24-hour daylight between April and August. On the opposite end of the light spectrum, Svalbard’s January and February months have “polar nights,” when the night lasts for around 24 hours, making the aurora borealis particularly visible.

If you do decide to take this trip together, beware: Looking up at the stars in your backyard won’t be quite so romantic anymore.

Porto, Portugal

couple vacations

Porto is a waterfront merchant city that transports you to an earlier time with its cobblestoned streets, baroque churches, and prevalence of family-owned businesses and port factories, the region’s most famous export. In the nearby Duoro Valley, you can visit the vineyards where the wine has been produced for 2,000 years, sample the wine, and participate in some harvesting practices like stomping on the grapes. In a city infused with the culture of wine making and drinking, you and your significant other can get tipsy on the energy alone.

Amalfi Coast, Italy

Italy

Known for its natural and architectural beauty, the Amalfi Coast is a prime choice for a romantic Mediterranean getaway. Travellers bask in the natural scenery, hike through small villages with picturesque sea views, and visit famous sites like the “Emerald Grotto” (Grotta dello Smeraldo), medieval churches, gardens, and museums. When you need some quiet time for just the two of you, there are a number of secluded hotels that offer oceanfront views and luxurious amenities.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

couple vacations

In Argentina’s bustling capital, you and your significant other will never run out of activities to try with lots of live entertainment and a multitude of restaurants and bars. For a day-to-night date, La Boca is a vibrant neighbourhood known for Tango dancing and a pedestrian walkway lined with crafts and houses and shops painted in bright primary colours.

Whitsunday Islands, Australia

Australia

At the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, these 74 islands off the coast of Queensland, Australia, will have you sailing into uncharted relationship territory with unbelievable sites to discover together. Whitehaven Beach is one of the most famous white-sanded beaches on the islands and despite being a tourist hotspot, it stretches for over four miles (6.4 kilometres), making it easy to find your own space. In addition to having blissful beach days, you can have some truly unforgettable and romantic excursions while visiting these islands, like flying over the Heart Reef in a helicopter, staying aboard a boat for a few days, and snorkelling at the Great Barrier Reef.

South Caicos, Turks and Caicos

couple vacations

While Turks and Caicos is certainly not a new destination for romantic vacations, most tourists flock to Providenciales, the first stopping point for travellers on the tropical archipelago. Far less popular (and far more secluded) are the pristine beaches of South Caicos, just a short, scenic connecting flight away. If you’re looking for something truly special — perhaps for celebrating an anniversary or another special occasion — Sailrock Resort is a luxury property nestled within natural brush along white-sand shores that lead into crystal-clear water. You’ll experience the type of picturesque serenity you thought was only accessible to movie stars — yet there the two of you will be, sipping colourful cocktails together on a hammock at the beach’s edge, with nothing but the open, beautiful horizon spanning ahead of you.

Barbados

The west coast of Barbados is home to several high-end resorts with various offerings to make your Caribbean escape extra memorable. Of course, you can arrange some classic island excursions, such as snorkelling, private boat trips with companies like Seaduced , and visits to local attractions like the spectacular Hunte’s Gardens and Rihanna’s childhood home. For a dose of the local cuisine and culture, enjoy an upbeat Friday night at Oistins fish fry or sample some of the island’s best rums at Mount Gay rum distillery. You could also kick back and make relaxation your number-one priority by simply enjoying the beautiful beaches and temperate water. No matter how active you decide to be, Barbados makes for one of the best vacation spots for couples. Some hotels offer unique experiences for couples wanting to up the romance even more. For a dinner you won’t soon forget, head to The Cliff , which overlooks the water in a sultry, fire-adorned setting.

Dalmatian Coast, Croatia

Croatia

For the ultimate romantic vacation, charter a boat and sail along the Dalmatian Coast in Croatia. If you start your journey in Dubrovnik and end up in Split, you’ll get a comprehensive look at the country, from nautical exploration to sightseeing in both small seaport towns and big cities. With a stopover in a new place every night, the transit is part of the fun, rather than merely a means to get from point A to point B. Travellers mainly book Turkish gulets (or small yachts) with separate quarters for the crew, and companies like Adriatic Holiday offer packages with a captain, chef, and one to two crew members who help curate not just your route, but everything else you do while on water or shore. The busy season is from June through early September, but trips set out into October — a great option if you want a bit more quiet and privacy on the Adriatic Sea.

Cotswolds, England

England

Step into a romantic period piece on a vacation in the picturesque English countryside. The rolling hills and fields are dotted with the most quaint towns you’ll ever find — popular stops include Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-Water, and Castle Combe. Grab a pint in a storied pub or tea in a cute cafe after spending the day exploring town after adorable town.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

couple vacations

What could be more romantic than snuggling up by the fire after a day out in the snow? At Jackson Hole, you can enjoy winter sports in a stunning setting just a short distance from Grand Teton National Park. Plus, you can book a stay at a luxurious property like Amangani or Four Seasons Resort and Residences Jackson Hole for a truly romantic trip.

Charleston, South Carolina

couple vacations

Charleston is a favourite city among Travel + Leisure readers, and once you visit, it’s easy to see why. Dine at delicious restaurants, take a sunset cruise in the harbour (where you may even spot a dolphin or two), and visit one of the nearby beaches. For romantic accommodations, we recommend staying outside the city on Kiawah Island — a little under an hour away — where you’ll find The Sanctuary , a beachfront luxury hotel.

Arizona Spa Retreat

couple vacations

Looking for a mindful way to connect with your partner? Consider booking a trip to a wellness resort with a spa and classes to deepen your relationship. Miraval Arizona is located in Tucson and offers an all-inclusive experience with fitness classes, wellness lectures, spa treatments, and more. Civana Wellness Resort & Spa near Scottsdale offers a serene escape amid the Sonoran Desert. And Sedona, with its red rocks and mysterious vortexes, is another popular destination among wellness travellers.

Kauai, Hawaii

Hawaii

Find paradise together on a trip to Kauai. The island combines the best of worlds with lush jungle and beautiful beaches , so you can spend days lounging on the shores and exploring its natural wonders by foot, boat, or helicopter. Resorts on the island include Timbers Kaua’i and Koʻa Kea Hotel & Resort at Poipu Beach.

Napa Valley, California

California

A romantic jaunt to California’s wine country might be the perfect getaway for couples looking for delicious vino, beautiful views, and world-class dining. Spend days touring vineyards and tasting different varietals while gazing out on the rolling, vine-covered hills. You can also opt for a ride on the Napa Valley Wine Train for more scenic views. Retire to one of the many beautiful luxury resorts in the area, like Auberge du Soleil , Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley , and Solage, Auberge Resorts Collection .

Sea Island, Georgia

couple vacations

This Georgia barrier island offers secluded, five-star luxury across several styles of accommodations, including The Cloister , located in the heart of the resort, and private cottages. In addition to the beach, guests can golf, lounge by the pools, get a spa treatment, and enjoy activities like tennis, horseback riding, and more.

New York, New York

New York

For some couples, taking on a big city is just as romantic as spending a week by the beach. And when it comes to city destinations in the United States, it’s hard to beat New York City . Every night is date night on vacation, so go to dinner and a Broadway show, enjoy extended evening hours at some of the world’s best museums, visit acclaimed restaurants and cocktail bars, and stroll through Central Park to soak in the sights and sounds of the Big Apple.

Palm Springs, California

couple vacations

Escape to the desert with a trip to Palm Springs, surrounded by picturesque mountains and lined with palm trees. Plan your visit in the spring, fall, or winter to avoid the intense summer heat, and admire the mid-century modern architecture and hit the links or the spa. The Ritz-Carlton, Rancho Mirage is a luxe pick for a pool with a view, and the Parker Palm Springs is a trendy choice.

18 Life-changing Couples Vacations

While some parts of the island have maintained a pre-modern look, the island is a popular tourist destination, so it’s well-equipped to accommodate international travelers looking for a romantic stay with comforts like high-end resorts, yoga classes, spas, and Australian-influenced cafes.

You’ll definitely want to visit Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest inactive and intact volcanic caldera. The bowl-like shape makes a natural border for the animals, boosting the chances safari goers will be able to spot all of the Big Five — lion, cheetah, rhino, elephant, and buffalo — during a tour. Serengeti National Park is another popular safari destination because of the area’s mass seasonal migrations of wildebeest and zebra, large lion population, and diversity of habitats and animals.

If you do decide to take this trip together, beware: Looking up at the stars in your backyard won’t be quite so romantic anymore.

These 18 destinations make for some of the best couples vacations — but don't blame us when your wanderlust is kicked into high gear.

15 Transformative Travel Experiences

Below you’ll find a list of travel experiences that can change your life. Whenever you embark on a new adventure, it’s important to remember what you get out of an experience is directly related to how you approach it. If you want to really “feel” something, you have to be open to it. Go into everything with an open mind. You may be surprised at how quickly the stresses of everyday life can morph into a feeling of child-like wonder!

1. Go on a National Park road trip.

There are few things more all-American than a cross-country road trip. Throw in a few stretches of Route 66 and some of America’s most spectacular national parks and you have the perfect recipe for the vacation of a lifetime! The United States is home to 424 national park sites including national parks, national historic sites, and national recreation areas. Regardless of whether you hit two parks or 20, a national park road trip gives explorers to learn more about the beautiful country we live in and can be a life-changing experience.

Adventurous travelers can go hiking, camping, kayaking, or rafting in many of the parks. Meanwhile, people looking for a more relaxing trip can go stargazing or sightseeing. The opportunities for outdoor activities are endless. While these adventures are certainly great for your physical and mental health, the confidence that you gain from completing an epic hike or overcoming something that really scares you can have a tremendous impact on you in the future.

If you’re traveling with kids, this can give them a chance to learn more about nature and their place in it. You can bestow a love of adventure and respect for our environment in these little learners that will last a lifetime. As a bonus, it can also give them lots of cool stories to tell their friends!

Expert tip: If you’re planning on visiting three or more national parks, make sure to pick up an America the Beautiful National Park Pass. Offered by the National Park Service, it costs just $80 per year and gives access to more than 2,000 different NPS-managed areas including the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, and Zion National Parks. Since many of these parks cost anywhere between $30 to $35 to enter, this could provide a very cost-effective alternative to buying expensive park tickets.

2. Take a journey through India.

India is one of those places that is exactly like you’ve read and heard while still being nothing like you expected. From the sounds, the smells, and the sights, it’s all-encompassing from the moment your flight touches down on this fabled land.

Most visitors will start their Indian odyssey in New Delhi. As the country’s capital, it has some of India’s most important buildings as well as some of the most fascinating ruins. The labyrinth of narrow streets in Old Delhi gives you a fantastic introduction to the chaos that awaits in this spellbinding country while also giving you an inside look at the daily lives of people in one of the world’s biggest cities.

Meanwhile, the surrounding area of New Delhi provides a glaring juxtaposition to Old Delhi’s chaotic streets with its wide avenues and meticulously maintained houses and yards. This is where most of the city’s British colonial-era buildings are located, and you may find yourself wondering if you’ve somehow been transported to London as you wander around!

From Delhi, you can head in virtually every direction and find something amazing. If you’re short on time, you can easily reach the breathtaking Taj Mahal from Delhi via an express train, or you can include Jaipur in your itinerary and travel along the famous Golden Triangle. While the overall experience is slightly less majestic than what thousands of Instagrammers and travel bloggers try to show, this doesn’t actually take away from the experience. Instead, it adds to it.

However, if you really want to experience incredible India, you need to venture off the beaten path a bit and visit places like the small town of Bundi, the ancient fort city of Jaisalmer, and the lakeside city of Udaipur. These very different cities can give you insight into how multifaceted the country is.

If you want to venture even further off the normal tourist itinerary, you can travel overland to Mumbai and then onwards to the beaches of Goa and Valkarna, the tropical backwaters of Kerala, or the bustling city of Bangalore. The southern section of India is much more laid-back than the bustling north, and this is a great alternative for people who find other parts of the country a little too overwhelming.

Expert tip: Train tickets tend to sell out really quickly in India thanks to the 1.4 billion people who all seem to want to ride the train at the same time. It’s also a little challenging to buy tickets with a foreign credit card as the main government train website doesn’t take international cards. Luckily, you can buy a special quota of tickets that are available only for foreigners. These can usually be purchased last minute. Although they’re a little more expensive than normal tickets, it’s definitely worth it!

3. Hike to Machu Picchu.

As one of the most famous ancient ruins in the Americas, it’s almost impossible to find a must-see travel list without this mind-blowing attraction included. Despite the impression that it’s in the middle of nowhere, Machu Picchu is surprisingly easy to get to. While it’s possible to take a train to Machu Picchu from Cusco, if you want to have a truly mind-blowing experience, we highly recommend following in the footsteps of the Incas and walking there via the ancient Inca Trail.

Most visitors start their trip to Peru in the capital city of Lima. You can then take a bus or flight to Cusco. It’s a good idea to spend a few days there getting used to the elevation before attempting anything strenuous. After you get acclimated to the altitude, you can begin your trip to Machu Picchu. The starting point for the Inca Trail is in Ollantaytambo. From there, it’s a four-day hike to Machu Picchu. With any luck, you’ll arrive early in the morning on the fourth day before any of the other tourists get there.

Expert tip: Hiking to Machu Picchu is on the travel bucket list of many people. As a result, the Inca Trail tends to sell out very quickly. If you aren’t able to get a booking on one of these hikes, don’t despair. The Salkantay Trail is there! The Salkantay Trail is a five-day hike that leads you through the beautiful Andes Mountains to the town of Aguas Calientes.

Rather than trekking along the old Incan pathways, you cover trails that lead through breathtaking passes and alongside meandering rivers. It’s a different experience than the Inca Trail but magical all the same!

4. Explore the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador.

The Galapagos Islands are one of the world’s most biologically diverse places on the planet. Hundreds of species of plants and animals call this Pacific island chain home. It’s one of the world’s best places for snorkeling and scuba diving thanks to the pristine waters and abundance of marine life.

Getting to the Galapagos Islands is much easier than you may think. First, you need to fly to Quito, the beautiful colonial capital of Ecuador. From there, you can take a short flight to one of the main inhabited islands. You can then travel between three of the biggest islands by public ferry and stay in local accommodation.

Alternatively, you can join one of the multi-day island cruises. These will take you to some of the smaller, more pristine islands that are only accessible by private boat. However, they do tend to be much more expensive than creating your own DIY experience. This could put them a bit out of reach for people traveling on a budget. Make sure to compare both options before making a final decision as this can have a huge impact on the kind of experience you have.

5. Snorkel in the Great Barrier Reef, Australia.

Even though I had wanted to go to Australia since I was a little girl, Finding Nemo is what made me really want to go snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef. And to be completely honest, it certainly didn’t disappoint!

The Great Barrier Reef stretches a whopping 1,400 miles along the northeast coast of Australia and is the largest coral reef system in the world. While you’re there, you can see schools of fish swirling around you and hear coral cracking. If you’re lucky, you may even see sharks and sea turtles as they glide on by.

You have a few different options when it comes to snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef. The first option is joining one of the daily snorkeling trips that leave from Cairns. The other option is to join a live aboard. These boats are much smaller than the day tours which makes being in the water at the reef much more enjoyable.

6. Spend a romantic week in Italy.

From the canals of Venice to the ornate details of Florence’s voluminous Duomo, there’s something about Italy that exudes romance. Whether it’s the cobblestone towns, the mouthwatering food, or the copious amounts of cheap wine available, a trip to Italy is bound to make anyone feel a bit amorous. Spending a romantic week (or a month!) in Italy could just be the life-changing experience you’re looking for!

If you aren’t in a relationship or have anyone to go with you, don’t worry. You can easily have a romance with yourself! Take this time to reflect on the things that you’re super proud of and the things that you love about yourself. Have that extra glass of Chianti or an extra scoop of gelato. This is the time to romance yourself, and you should take advantage of it. Besides, everyone knows that calories don’t count when you’re on vacation!

7. Journey through Tanzania.

There’s something about Africa that brings out a humbling and grounded feeling in many visitors. The rawness and beauty of life is up front and center here. There’s no denying how insignificant you, and your problems, are. Oddly, this is a very freeing experience. That bad work appraisal, the negative Facebook comments, the snide remarks from someone you’re about… these things all fall to the wayside, at least temporarily, and give you the mental space that you need to look at life a little differently.

My first trip to Africa was one of my most life-changing trips to date. Up until that point, I had a very two-dimensional view of the continent. I imagined vast grasslands and savannahs dotted with animals and a handful of cities. While this is exactly what I found in the two weeks that I spent there, I also realized just how little I knew of this amazing continent. I have now been back to Africa five more times, and it still continues to shape me in new ways during every visit.

For many first-time visitors, Tanzania is one of the best places to start your African odyssey. The country is safe, and it has decent infrastructure which makes getting around much easier than it is in other parts of the continent. You can begin your trip in the modern capital city of Dar es Salaam. From there, you can travel to Arusha. This rough-and-tumble city serves as the gateway to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. Most safaris depart from here. After a week of watching some of the world’s most amazing animals eat, sleep, and hunt in their natural environment, you can make your way back to Dar es Salaam.

From Dar es Salaam, you can board a flight or ferry to the Indian Ocean island of Zanzibar. This beautiful island was once an important commercial center on the African, European, and Asian trade routes, and the ancient city of Stone Town embodies this economic heyday. Today, it’s an important tourist destination, and it’s easy to find onward buses to the many beach destinations scattered around the island. After a few days spent relaxing in the white sand and turquoise water, you can make your way back to the mainland for your flight back home.

8. Take a cruise to Antarctica.

Penguins, seals, and whales… oh my! Tucked far down at the bottom of the earth, there’s something almost otherworldly about the continent of Antarctica. The gargantuan icebergs, the fascinating wildlife, and the seemingly endless sheets of snow and ice provide a year-round winter wonderland for anyone hoping to see something different.

Cruises to Antarctica generally include a few landings on the continent as well as Zodiac rides. These are great opportunities for wildlife spotting. You can see hundreds of penguins and seals and dozens of whales in just a few hours. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also opt for kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, and camping. I did the paddle boarding and can honestly say that it was one of the most unique experiences of my life!

Most people who visit Antarctica do so on a cruise from the Argentinian port city of Ushuaia. Cruises generally last anywhere between 10 and 14 days. If the high prices of these cruises make you weep, then you can always try your luck by going to Ushuaia and booking a last-minute spot on a cruise.

You can also opt for a cruise that includes the Shetland and South Georgia islands. These are usually around a week longer and are one of the only ways to reach these far-flung destinations.

Expert tip: When I went to Antarctica, I booked a last-minute, 14-day cruise with Quark for around $7,000. This was about half the normal price of the cruise, and I was given my own cabin since I was traveling alone. I booked online from New York City through a tour operator based in Ushuaia and was luckily able to get all the way down there in time for my departure.

9. Wander through the casbahs of Morocco.

Lying on the northwestern edge of Africa, the country of Morocco has long been a melting pot of African and European culture. The casbahs, or historic city centers, of Marrakech, Fes, and Essaouira are the epicenter of culture and history in these ancient cities. Taking a stroll through the markets, madrassas, and mosques gives you an almost bewildering look into a distant past that isn’t actually quite so distant here!

Morocco is a great option for first-time travelers to North Africa or the Middle East as it gives you a small taste of both regions. If you want to explore the Great Outdoors, you can always venture out into the High Atlas Mountains for breathtaking scenery and exhilarating trekking.

10. Have a walkabout in New Zealand.

When it comes to lands “down under,” New Zealand has pretty much everyone beat. Lying south of Australia in the Pacific Ocean, New Zealand is about as far away from the United States as you can get. Thankfully, the country is relatively compact, and it’s easy to see most of the main attractions within a few weeks. If you have the time to stay longer, you can go to some of the smaller, lesser-known, towns and cities. Here, you’ll be able to get a taste of what makes New Zealand tick.

Most visitors arrive in Auckland, the largest city in New Zealand. Auckland is situated at the northern end of the North Island. From there, it’s just a 3-4 hour drive to the touristy cities of Rotorua and Taupo. Here, you can get a glimpse into the local culture of the indigenous Maori through some interesting cultural experiences and see some of the country’s most unique geothermal wonders. You can then proceed about another six hours down to Wellington and take a ferry to the South Island. Otherwise, you can hop on a domestic flight and head to Christchurch or Queenstown. These two cities serve as the gateways for the myriad of outdoor activities and epic scenery waiting for you on the South Island.

Expert tip: New Zealand is highly developed with great infrastructure. It’s much safer than most of the United States. However, it can be very expensive. If you’re traveling on a budget and don’t mind missing out on some of the creature comforts of a hotel, we highly recommend renting a van that you can sleep in and touring the country that way. This is how many backpackers explore New Zealand, so there’s lots of information online about it.

11. Hike to Everest Base Camp, Nepal.

The Himalayas are one of the most impressive mountain chains in the world, and the incomparable Mount Everest lies at the heart of it. One of the best ways to see this incredible peak is by hiking to Everest Base Camp.

The hike to Everest Base Camp takes around 14 days round-trip and departs from the Nepalese town of Lukla. Along the way, you will pass breathtaking vistas, and experience local culture, and warm hospitality from the Nepalese people. It’s sure to be something that you’ll remember forever. Plus, it’s a feat that not many people can say they have accomplished.

Since it isn’t that strenuous in terms of elevation gain or technical skills, it can be accomplished by anyone with a decent level of fitness. However, it shouldn’t be taken lightly. The high altitude and cold air can make the hike seem extra exhausting. The peak climbing season runs from March to May and then again from September to December. You can hire local porters and guides who will make the ascent and descent easier.

12. Drive the coast of South Africa.

South Africa is famous for many things—magnificent wildlife, vibrant cities, beautiful beaches, and mouthwatering wines to name a few. While many people flock straight to Kruger National Park or Cape Town, a journey along the coast can give you a unique look into the beauty and unique culture of South Africa.

I personally did this journey from Durban to Cape Town, following the Wild Coast and the Garden Route, and staying in small guesthouses and glamping sites. It was an interesting experience to see how the cultural and geographical landscape changed as I made my way toward Cape Town. I always felt safe as a solo female traveler, and it completely changed my perception of South Africa.

Expert tip: While it’s very easy to rent a car in South Africa, you may find yourself paying a huge premium for an automatic transmission. Even if you’re relatively confident driving a manual, you may want to practice a bit before your trip. It can be a bit challenging driving on the opposite side of the road and shifting gears when you aren’t used to it!

13. See the Northern Lights.

Every winter, one of Mother Nature’s most spectacular celestial performances takes place. Across the skies of Scandinavia, Iceland, Canada, and Alaska, you can find a sea of colors dancing through the night sky. It’s an amazing sight and one that very few people get the chance to see.

Since the Northern Lights can only be seen in destinations in the far northern stretches of the globe, the best advice to see them is to go as far north as possible. They can only be seen on a dark, clear night, so there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to spot them. In a way, this makes it even more meaningful when you do!

14. Go on a Nile River cruise.

The civilization of Ancient Egypt has had an undeniable impact on the world. Luckily, many of the most amazing archaeological sites left behind by this fascinating civilization are easy to visit! River cruises ply along the waters of the Nile River between the cities of Luxor and Aswan, stopping at many ancient ruins along the way including Karnak, Edfu, Kom Ombo, and the Valley of the Kings. Most of the trips last between three and four days, so they’re a good option even for people who are short on time.

If you would prefer to travel by land, there are frequent trains that connect Luxor and Aswan. Traveling through Egypt can be a little tough if you aren’t an experienced traveler, so it may be worth it to fork out the money for the river cruise. This helps take away a lot of the normal stress of traveling and gives you more opportunities to enjoy the sites!

15. Fall in love with a beautiful stranger.

Yes, yes, we know it’s a bit cliche. And we’re sure you have visions of people strolling along the banks of the Seine or kissing under the Eiffel Tower. However, falling in love (or like) with someone from another country can be life-changing. Regardless if it’s for one week with a local you met in Tokyo, a month with a fellow traveler in Indonesia, or a lifetime with that perfect person you were lucky enough to meet while hiking the Camino in Spain, this time can completely change the way you look at a destination as well as relationships in the future. In many ways, it will also show you just how similar people are all around the world.

When you travel, make sure to be open to new experiences and to meeting new people. This doesn’t mean you should throw caution to the wind and make silly decisions like marrying a person you just met in Las Vegas. But it does mean that you keep an open mind and see where this road takes you!

Top 6 Destinations That Will Change Your Life

When is the last time you did something for the first time?

Whether you crave adventure, luxury or culture, at least once in your lifetime you should travel to a destination that simply blows your mind. Maybe it’s dining at an underwater restaurant surrounded by exotic marine life, kayaking in the jungle or taking an elephant back safari —whatever you choose the world is your playground.

Here are five life-changing trips worth the splurge:

Ithaa Undersea Restaurant in Maldives

Rated “the most beautiful restaurant in the world” by the New York Daily News in 2014, Ithaa sits five meters below the surface, offering 180-degree panoramic views of the vibrant coral gardens surrounding it and exotic creatures of the ocean.

While sitting five meters below the surface you can view panoramic views of the vibrant coral garden, sip a mid morning cocktail, indulge in a five-course lunch menu or caviar for dinner.

Walking Safari Tour

African Safari vacations  are typically regarded as the ultimate bucket list destination. Add a life changing experience such walking along sandy paths in search of giraffes or riding elephant back through Victoria Falls and your life will probably never be the same. Check out Travel and Leisure guide to planning a safari.

Egyptian Nile Cruise

After many years, people are still fascinated by the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Valley of the Kings (site of King Tut’s tomb), and the twin temple at Kom Ombo. But beyond these mysterious, 4,600-year-old structures lies the Nile River—which is nothing short of amazing.

The Oberoi Zahra , a luxury Nile cruise liner, features talks by Egyptologists and private temple tours.  And, G adventures provides packages where you can spend the night on a felucca, explore ancient temples and monuments, hunt for deals in the bazaars, gaze at the pyramids and mysterious Sphinx.

Tour the Artic and North Pole

If you’re looking to experience one of the world’s disappearing natural wonders, Icetrek offers an incredible opportunity to travel to the end of the earth. Icetrek offers  a flight, tour or expedition to the Arctic and North Pole, Antarctica and South Pole.

Volunteer in Haiti

According to Habitat.org, Haiti has experienced more t than 15 severe tropical storms or hurricanes in the last 14 years. And, in January, 2010 the people of Haiti experienced a horrific earthquake which resulted in over 200,000 deaths. Although its five year later, rebuilding continues.

Elevate Destinations; rated by National Geographic Traveler, as a tour of a lifetime, offers 11 day volunteer trips, which includes history, art and culture of Haiti. From touring the Ile-a-Vache, a beautiful island off the coast of Haiti’s southwestern peninsula to helping build a wind/solar system to supply electricity to the community, there are several ways to get involved.

Exotic Journey: Bhutan – Forbes, Top 10 bucket list trips of 2013

According to Forbes , Bhutan is the only Buddhist nation on earth and is also the only one that measures its success in terms of “Gross National Happiness.” Bhutan includes some of the highest peaks on the planet, where unique and welcoming monasteries cling to cliff faces, and is both culturally fascinating and an outdoor recreation wonderland for hikers and mountain bikers to explore.

It is one of the least visited non-hostile nations on earth, because it has been very careful about tourism development: to avoid sprawl and overdevelopment, Bhutan limits visas issued and requires visitors to have fully planned itineraries before arriving, and is one of just two nations with minimum required daily spending for visitors – but it’s worth it.

Two of the world’s best boutique luxury hotel chains, Aman Resorts and Como Resorts, have multiple lodges here set up for logistically easy – and decadent – explorations of Bhutan. Accessible only from Thailand or India, “The Land of the Thunder Dragon,” is one of the most uniquely individual places on earth, physically and culturally.

These 7 Lesser-known Destinations Have All the Fun of Popular Summer Travel Spots — at Better Prices

Travelers call them “a real gem.”

We independently evaluate all recommended products and services. If you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation. Learn more .

While so many of us have a bucket list of destinations just waiting to be checked off, sometimes the rising costs or sold-out hotel rooms, particularly during popular travel times (we see you, summer), can impede those plans. But that doesn’t mean you should put the brakes on planning your dream vacation. Instead, consider an alternative, but equally exciting, location that offers adventure and beauty for a fraction of the cost of more popular tourist spots.

To uncover these hidden gems, Expedia offers flight and hotel packages to places that may feel slightly off the beaten path, but offer just as much opportunity as their more well-known counterparts. If you’ve been eyeing a trip to sunny Cancun, consider Isla Mujeres ’ pristine beaches. Or for your active, hiking-centered vacation, Zion versus Yellowstone National Park offers plenty of top-rated hotel options for less. Check out more clever, money-saving swaps below.

Isla Mujeres vs Cancun

While Cancun remains one of the most searched-for summer travel destinations , its popularity can also come with a larger price tag than some lesser-known cities. Expedia offers packages for a variety of hotels in Isla Mujeres, which is gaining in popularity but on average offers less pricey hotel options, including the Ixchel Beach Hotel which is already selling out on select days over the summer. The hotel has outdoor pools, family-friendly activities, beach access, and much more, with prices starting around $140 per night, depending on your travel days. One traveler said the hotel is on the “nicest beach area” and that there are “tons of dining options and small shops” nearby.

Zion vs Yellowstone

Both locations boast hiking and cycling trails for an active vacation, but there’s no question that Yellowstone is a more visited spot over Zion National Park. If you’re looking for adventure, Zion is a must-see destination that also offers a considerably less expensive vacation with just as many sightseeing thrills. Expedia’s hotel options located near Zion Canyon include Flanigan’s Inn , which has restaurants, access to shopping, a spa, fitness classes, a pool, and many more amenities, including its close walking distance to Zion. One traveler said it’s in the “perfect location” and is “zen as promised.”

Malta vs Amalfi

The island located to the south of Sicily offers similarly stunning views compared to Amalfi, plus history and a vibrant (and equally relaxing) island feel for a lower cost. While a smaller island, Malta is still desirable for its beautiful, calm beaches and top-notch hotels, like the Corinthia Palace Malta . The family-friendly property has a tennis court, full-service spa, pools, fitness classes, and is located near the city’s major landmarks including Palazzo Parisio & Gardens, Grand Harbour, and The Malta Experience. Right now, you can find savings of up to 20 percent or more on select dates. One reviewer said the Corinthia Palace is a “relaxing respite,” while another called it “a real gem,” adding that they had an “incredible stay.”

Bruges vs Venice

Gautier Houba/Travel + Leisure

Both Bruges and Venice are known for their winding canals, but only one has a Lake of Love (hint: it’s not the more widely known destination). For a similar scenic experience, Bruges, Belgium (aka “Venice of the North”) has canals used solely for tourist boats. The four-star Hotel Navarra Brugge , located near bustling Bruges Market Square, is within walking distance to restaurants, has a sauna, and its “location is amazing,” according to one traveler. While it’s quickly becoming a popular tourist spot, you can still find more affordability within the center of the city as compared to Venice.

Barbados vs Hawaii

If you’re seeking a laid-back, restful vacation near clear blue water on white sandy beaches, consider Barbados. It’s a smaller island than Hawaii but still packed with water activities and beautiful Caribbean hotels, like The Crane Resort that’s currently up to 40 percent off on select travel days. The hotel’s amenities include five outdoor pools, five on-site restaurants, bike rentals, a spa, surfing, and even personal motorized watercraft available. Both destinations are highly desirable, but you’ll find more opportunity for the cost by visiting The Crane Resort in Barbados. Plus, travelers gave it rave reviews, with one sharing that the “property is a beautiful oasis with lush gardens and lovely views.”

Montreal vs Paris

The City of Light often tops many bucket list destinations, but planning a vacation there can make you see more dollar signs than you’d like. If you’re looking for a city vacation with sightseeing, culture, entertainment, and delicious restaurants, Montreal checks all of those boxes and more, at an overall lower cost than its French friend. Hotel Birks Montreal in the downtown area offers amenities like a full-service spa, restaurants and lounges, and is a walk away from the Montreal Convention Centre. One shopper called it their “favorite hotel,” saying the staff went “above and beyond,” and right now, you can book your summertime stay for less with their current deal on select dates.

Before you book your next bucket list trip, head to Expedia to discover lesser-known destinations that offer just as much, for less.
