The 4 Apps You Need For Bus and Train Trips in the US

Making long-distance bus and train trips easier and cheaper

travel app by bus

Long-distance public transport isn't always a great option in the US. Without the high-speed trains of Europe and Asia, covering such large distances can be time-consuming, and finding the right combination of routes is often laborious.

For shorter trips or those on a tight budget, however, these often-overlooked modes of transport offer a good alternative to flights or driving your own vehicle.

Download these four apps to make the process faster, easier and maybe even cheaper.

To get a good idea of the options you've got available, it's hard to go past Rome2Rio. The app asks for a start and end point, and shows any combination of flights, buses, trains, ferries and self-driving options you can take for the journey.

You'll get price information for each potential trip, along with its duration. Tap one that seems appealing, and you'll see the available schedule, map and a detailed breakdown of each step of the journey.

The app isn't perfect – prices and schedules change faster than they can be updated, and booking or schedule links don't always take you where they should. Still, to quickly discover which choices you've got and roughly how much they'll cost, it's always a useful place to start.

iOS  and Android

Dedicated solely to bus and train travel in North America, Wanderu is an essential part of the ground traveler's arsenal. The app covers over 2000 cities, with comprehensive information about carriers, routes and schedules in much of the United States and Canada, as well as key Mexican destinations..

Enter your start and end points, travel date and time and number of people, and the app quickly spits out a range of options.

On popular routes like New York City to Washington, DC, there are literally hundreds of choices. The app helpfully shows the cheapest, earliest, latest and shortest trips along the top of the screen, and tapping on any of them sorts the list that way. Longer and more obscure routes, unsurprisingly, have fewer options.

Selecting any trip shows detailed trip information, including start and end times and station address. Tapping the location icon loads that address into your favorite mapping app. Booking, too, is reasonably straightforward and done inside the app rather than pushing you out to the carrier's website – a nice touch.

Wandru is available on iOS and Android .

Given the lack of competition on the nation's rails, the Amtrak app is better than you might expect. You can book one-way, round-trip or multi-ride tickets directly, as well as update existing reservations.

Station information is available, along with trip details and information about any delays, and you can board using the barcode shown within the app. You can also check the current status of any train, if you're getting worried it's not going to show up on time.

The app is available on iOS , Android and Windows Phone .

With the biggest intercity bus network in the country, Greyhound can get you almost anywhere you want to go. The company's app has most of the features of the website, including booking tickets, checking schedules, and finding station locations and information.

Real-time bus status and location are also available. All bookings are stored in the 'My Trips' section, making it easy to see which trips you've got coming up. Discounts are shown in-app, and you can access your "RoadRewards" points if you're a member.

Note that it only works for Greyhound-branded services. If you want to use Bolt Bus, for example, it has its own app. Trips also need to originate within the continental United States to be bookable within the app.

The app is available on iOS and Android .

2. Travel during off-peak hours

Summer and holiday periods are when bus tickets tend to be highest. These are still ideal times to travel and prices will reflect that. Traveling by bus gives you great flexibility. There are often multiple daily departures, so if you can be flexible with your travel dates or schedule, choosing an overnight bus or traveling mid-week instead of the weekend will help you save on transportation costs. If you can only travel on weekends, bear in mind that Sunday afternoon departures are usually the most expensive. If you can leave on Sunday or Monday morning , you might be able to save a few bucks on your bus tickets.

3. Find cheap bus tickets for $1!

You’ve probably heard about $1 bus tickets – and they’re no myth. How can you find an intercity bus ride for just $1? Megabus and Greyhound Bus are known for their economical services and offer bus tickets for as little as $1 at random on some of their schedules, generally within the first handful of seats sold. To secure these seats, make sure you book early. The earlier you book your ticket, the greater your odds are of grabbing a seat for a buck.

4. Do your research

Much like airplane and train ticket prices, bus ticket prices vary from one bus company to the next. Be sure to do your research and compare companies and prices. Busbud can help you do that as we’ve collected all the info you need and put it in one place, so comparing prices, schedules, and providers is a breeze. You can sort the results by price, departure time, and ticket types and compare what each bus company has to offer in a single search.

Often neglected, the much improved Foursquare app which started out as a check-in game where users compete against friends to earn points for their check-ins has now turned into a far more useful, practical moneysaving app. Using the ‘explore nearby’ function and then checking ‘best nearby’ tab, you can find the best restaurants, shops within your current location based on your GPS location.

The ‘Specials’ tab allows you to find discounts and freebies within your vicinity.

20.  Expensify + Trail Wallet ( £1.99 )

It’s all too easy to overspend while travelling: estimating exchange rates as you shop, eating out several nights in a row, picking up the tab for friends. There are a range of apps to deal with exactly this problem and which allow you to record your expenses.

I’ve used the Expensify app previously and this handy, especially for business travellers, or for someone that likes to keep close tabs on what they are spending while they travel. With Expensify you can scan receipts, add hours you have worked, add expenses manually, add mileage and create invoices and expense reports. Drawback- If you have a lot of expenses to record, it can be time consuming to use this app and it takes a few seconds to record each item.

trail-wallet-preview

One of the best apps for tracking your daily expenditure and sticking to your budget while travelling is Trail Wallet . (Pictured above)

It’s simple and has an intuitive user-friendly interface. The app allows you to set a daily budget and then tracks your spending toward that. Trail Wallet has all has all the practicalities covered: supplies the current exchange rate ( 218 local currencies listed. Dependent on internet connection) , organises your spending by category, expenses tracking plus you can export your expenses via .csv file. The app also creates colorful pie charts to help visualise your spending.

Trail Wallet is one of the best expense tracking apps for the budget, rather than the business traveller. It is the only app here which isn’t free, but at £1.99, it’s well worth it.

To manage your travel budget effectively.

It features report management, receipt tracking in addition to mileage and time tracking. Moreover, you can snap a photo through SmartScan and it would be redirected to Expensify itself.

21. The National Trust

You can search by postcode or location and browse the interactive “favourites” list with hi-res images.

Why do we need it?

Thanks ever so much for this great post! The apps listed seem very helpful. I cannot wait to check out the last two. I am traveling to the UK for the first time in March, so the National Trust app will be super helpful for planning! Great job!

I would also add a decent navigational app Spyglass. It works great when offline, assuming that you pre-download the maps that you need in advance. It shows your accurate coordinates and your current position on a map, allows to mark locations and waypoints, share your locations with friends and much more. https://itunes.apple.com/app/spyglass/id332639548?mt=8&at=11lLc7&ct=c

Nice presentation, looks great! You should also check out the app Digitourist. You can find all tourist activities and spots in the UK on it and it’s for free. I use it a lot when traveling, i love it, it’s so easy!

I Was interested in JourneyPro until I read the poor reviews? Seems it has fallen from grace & is now outdated…… back to searching ?

Why is Digitourist not in this list? They have all tourist activities in Europe in one simple to use concept and you can save them for later use, also you can plan and save your routes in case you go by car.

Loved the post. There really are so many apps you did a great job. Just curious why there was National Trust but not English Heritage Days Out here? They both do the same thing but with different sites. I have both and use them depending on which area of the country I’m in. I don’t use AirBnB because I’ve planned prior to my trips and just don’t normally need it.

Another app I use is the Heathrow Airport Guide. Of course, GateGuru and other apps help with that as well. Some other apps I use are currency converter, tip calculator, and TripIt.

You opened my eyes to some new apps. Thank you very much!

Best Travel Apps To Download Before Your Next Overseas Trip

A mericans embark on approximately 93 million trips overseas each year, which would normally entail a lot of intense planning to ensure everything runs smoothly before diving into the unfamiliar. After all, there are so many things to consider before embarking on an international trip. You'll need to tackle how to communicate in a foreign language, how to calculate different currency values, and even just how to get around in a new place on a trip abroad . That's only the beginning, too.

Luckily, the international travel game was changed for the better forever with the emergence of smartphones. Travel preparations that once took months of planning can now be handled swiftly by hitting a few buttons and downloading an easy-to-use app. Planning for an international trip can feel daunting, but downloading the following convenient travel apps for your next overseas trip will make your adventure way easier, safer, and more efficient.

Read more: Tips For Protecting Your Passport When Traveling Abroad

One of the most immediate hurdles of traveling overseas is not speaking the local language. From the moment your plane touches the ground in a foreign country with a different language, you'll need to figure out a way to communicate. While it's smart to learn a couple of key phrases in your destination's language, you won't become fluent overnight unless you're a bona fide prodigy. That's why you need a good translator ready on your phone.

Many people will turn to Google Translate to help with translating on an overseas vacation, but the truth is that it's a pretty inaccurate translator with accuracy rates as low as 55% in some languages. That could lead to a lot of confused looks on an overseas trip. Instead, download the free app DeepL for more accurate translations in more than 25 languages. With DeepL, you can do things like save certain phrases to refer back to and use your camera to translate text. It's also been found to be more accurate than other translators out there.

Figuring out the best way to get from point A to B in a foreign country can be a little scary and confusing, but it's been made a whole lot easier with Rome2Rio. This handy little app allows you to input two different places, and it shows you every single way you can make the trip. You can input locations like countries, cities, tourist attractions, and addresses.

Rome2Rio will give you walking, train, bus, ferry, or plane directions depending on what's available for the route, so you'll know all your options and how much they cost. It'll tell you which route is the cheapest, quickest, and overall best choice for transportation. The app even provides a direct link to buy the tickets when you decide on a route and want to commit. You can plan out your entire route on an international trip with the assistance of Rome2Rio.

The biggest expenses of an overseas trip are usually booking flights, accommodations, and rental cars. It's a drag to shell out all that cash, but Hopper can save you a lot of money on these necessary travel expenses. Hopper is an app that tracks the price of flights, cars, and hotels across multiple providers, and lets you know exactly when to buy for the best price.

When you find a good deal on the trip of your dreams, Hopper lets you freeze the price for up to seven days to get the funds in order. The most noteworthy Hopper feature is its predictability model, which can tell you exactly when a flight, accommodation, or rental car is about to increase in price. Its predictions are said to be 95% accurate, too. Hopper is the smartest and cheapest way to make these big travel purchases and never fall victim to the price skyrocketing randomly.

WhatsApp is the third most-downloaded application in the entire world, with an insane 424 million downloads in 2022. There is a good reason that there are 2.78 billion active users on WhatsApp, and that number is growing every year. It's one of the most reliable encrypted messaging apps out there and allows anyone with an internet connection to send a message or make a call from anywhere in the world, making it perfect for an international trip where your provider from home might charge you an arm and a leg in roaming fees.

WhatsApp lets users securely message, call, and share media with anyone from around the world no matter where they go. It's no wonder that travelers have been downloading WhatsApp religiously for years. Users can adopt their regular phone number from home to sign up and even sync up the app with their contacts list. As long as you have Wi-Fi, WhatsApp is a free phone alternative that you can always count on overseas.

TimeShifter

Jet lag is that groggy exhaustion that comes with switching time zones, and when you're traveling overseas, it's practically inevitable. There is nothing worse than losing out on days of your short overseas vacation because you're too jet-lagged to do anything fun. Luckily, you don't have to worry about jet lag ruining your limited vacation time anymore thanks to the TimeShifter app.

TimeShifter uses the power of light exposure to shift your circadian clock and eliminate jet lag all by simply putting you on a timed schedule. It sounds simple, but it can completely transform your vacation experience, especially if you're only going away for a week or two. The TimeShifter app sends you prompt alerts of exactly when to sleep and when to wake up to get on the new country's time as fast as possible. It's actually a technique that's been used by NASA astronauts in space, and it's incredibly effective.

Google Maps

No matter which country you're visiting on an overseas trip, you'll likely need a little help to find your way around. Enter your new best friend: Google Maps. Google Maps is by far the most popular navigation app in America with 24 million downloads in 2022 alone, but it's just as useful internationally.

You don't want to be wandering aimlessly without Google Maps on your side to help you figure out where you're going. It's quite easy to get lost when you're exploring a new place, even if you're good with directions normally. Google Maps can keep you on track or save you with a quick reroute if you do end up getting turned around.

Google Maps has a ton of lesser-known features to help you on a trip, too. For example, it is a great way to remember the places you visit on your travels by dropping pins on the locations. You can also use this feature to remind you where you parked or where your accommodations are.

XE Currency

There are so many different things to get used to when you're traveling overseas to a foreign country, like using an entirely new system of currency to buy stuff. The currency rate is an important thing to consider before you start spending money. Otherwise, you could be easily ripped off because you don't know how much your money is worth in your vacation destination.

It can get extremely confusing to learn a new currency on a trip and figure out exactly how much you're spending every day. Instead of doing mad Google searches to figure out the daily exchange rate, download XE Currency and let it do the work for you. This is a very simple app that allows you to see the live currency exchange rates for 170 different currencies. Every second and cent the rate changes, it will be immediately updated in XE Currency for you to see.

When you're out in the allure of a foreign country, it's tempting to treat yourself to everything and go over budget if you're not careful. One good way to at least make an attempt at avoiding this, is by using the Tripcoin app. Tripcoin is a travel budget tracker that you can use to hold yourself accountable on a trip on the go. All you have to do is log your expenses into the app during your adventures and Tripcoin will do the rest from there.

The goal is to help you keep track of your spending habits and make sure you don't exceed your hard budget limit. Tripcoin allows you to track expenses in more than 150 currencies and doesn't require an internet connection. It lets you understand your spending habits while traveling so you can be on top of your budget and organize your finances, no matter what currency you're using.

It can be a struggle to remember everything on your packing list for a trip overseas. With electronics, clothes, toiletries, medications, travel documents, and more -- there is just so much stuff to think about before you head off to a foreign country. If just one crucial item slips your mind during the packing process, it can be a complete disaster before your trip even gets going. That's where PackPoint comes to the rescue.

PackPoint helps you build a comprehensive packing list based on what type of traveling you're doing, where you're going, the activities you're planning on, the weather, and more. Based on PackPoint's recommendations, you can add or remove things until you create the ideal packing list for your trip. As you put each item away into your luggage, you can easily check off each thing until the whole list is completed, which makes it a great solution for visual people. PackPoint is the only app you'll need to make sure you never forget something important in your suitcase again.

When you're going on an international trip, you usually have to juggle several different emails or websites to find all of your travel information. Think about it -- you have confirmations for your flight, hotel, your pre-booked tours, your rental car, and they're all randomly floating around in your emails somewhere. It can be pretty annoying to juggle between all these confirmations in the midst of a big travel day.

However, all of that stress is a thing of the past when you download the app TripIt. The premise of this app is pretty simple. It lets you effortlessly organize all your travel plans in one place, so you can just open the app and have your entire itinerary in front of you. All you have to do is email your confirmations to [email protected] every time you book something new. That's all there is to it, and from there, TripIt will develop an itinerary for your whole trip to keep everything tidy.

NordVPN Or Similar VPN Service

Most people don't really think about how vulnerable connecting to an unknown Wi-Fi network makes them. All it takes is one wrong click and you could be giving up all of your digital information. That's why connecting your devices to random Wi-Fi networks on a trip abroad is so sketchy. It can lead you to get your information stolen or way worse.

That's why it's so crucial to use a solid VPN. VPN stands for virtual private network, and it keeps your info protected on the World Wide Web by doing things like hiding your IP address and encrypting your data. It makes it way safer to connect to public Wi-Fi networks.

There are a lot of different VPN options out there, but one of the best is NordVPN. With NordVPN, you can use up to six devices at once, and it has some of the strongest encryption services with 5,000 servers from 60 countries. The other big benefit of having a VPN app while traveling abroad is that it'll allow you to watch streaming service content from other countries.

Uber, Grab, Cabify, Or Similar

Every region in the world has its own variation of a rideshare app, and you'll need to rely on it at some point during an overseas trip. Uber is the largest rideshare app in the world right now with 130 million monthly users and 7.6 billion trips carried out (and counting). It's also available in 72 countries, so if you're not sure which rideshare app to use, it's a safe bet that Uber will have your needs covered on a trip abroad.

However, there are also a few other options if Uber isn't available in the country you're visiting. For example, Grab is a popular rideshare app in Asia; Cabify is widely used in Latin America; and FreeNow is useful in many parts of Europe. Just make sure you figure out which rideshare app is the most widely used in your destination and download it before you arrive because it'll likely be very helpful at the airport .

AccuWeather

Weather can make or break your international trip, and you always want the most accurate information on the go. Lots of people just rely on their phone's weather app or just Google it every time they need an update, but downloading the AccuWeather app is a way better choice. There is real science backing up AccuWeather. More than 100 expert meteorologists work at AccuWeather to provide the most reliable results, and it's been proven that they're doing a really good job.

A study of 120 million weather forecasts over the past four years proved that AccuWeather was the most accurate out of all of them. The app's interface is neatly organized, and it offers a bunch of features you won't get on other weather websites or apps. AccuWeather even shows you when certain weather conditions are expected to stop or start down to the minute. So, you can plan to leave your hotel 10 minutes later to avoid a random rain shower.

It seems inconsequential, but the Flush app can completely save the day when you're traveling abroad and don't really know the terrain yet. Imagine how stressful it would be to try and find a bathroom in a new country overseas without speaking the language or knowing where to look on the streets. With the Flush app, though, you can pinpoint all the public bathrooms around you based on your exact location.

The app features more than 200,000 public toilets listed all over the world. Additionally, it includes important info about the restrooms, like if they have disability access, whether you need to pick up a key to use them, or if you'll need to pay a fee to use the bathroom. When you're out in the middle of a foreign city and desperate to find a bathroom fast, you'll be thankful that the Flush app is downloaded on your phone.

Getting familiar with a new country's public transportation system can be extremely confusing, especially if you're trying to navigate maps and routes in a foreign language you don't understand. The journey is a lot less daunting when you have the Transit app on your phone, though. Transit shows you exactly how to use a city's various public transportation options to get from where you are to your chosen destination.

The directions on Transit are very detailed, including information like how long you'll have to wait between stops, when the next train/bus/etc. is arriving, and telling you exactly when you need to get off at your stop. The app is updated live with incoming trains, so you always know exactly when you need to be ready at the platform or station, too. You'll even be alerted if your train or bus is delayed by a bit or if there are any route closures along your journey. Transit is already available in more than 300 cities across 18 countries so far and counting.

Phone companies charge insane amounts of money for using your phone overseas, but one way to get around those fees is by purchasing a local SIM card for cheap. The main drawback of this solution is that getting a SIM card and understanding the details in a foreign country isn't very fun on a vacation. Instead, opt for Airalo.

Airalo allows you to purchase a local eSIM card through their easy-to-use app without ever having to visit a store in person. The best part is it's super affordable. First, you choose the country you're visiting, then you pick a plan that fits your needs, and then you're good to go. Airalo offers eSIM cards for more than 200 different countries, and it's already used by more than 5 million people around the globe. You can even get a global eSIM that works in more than 130 different countries if you're a full-time traveler.

1 person airlifted, 10 others injured after school bus overturns in North Carolina

travel app by bus

One person was airlifted to a hospital, and ten others sustained non-life-threatening injuries after a school bus overturned in North Carolina on Tuesday morning, officials said.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol told USA TODAY the incident happened around 7:30 a.m. local time on Tuesday after the driver of the Burke County school bus "lost control, ran off the right side of the road, struck a ditch, and overturned," before coming to a rest on its top.

Nine children and two adults were on the bus at the time of the crash.

One of the adults on the bus became partially entrapped in the bus and had to be evacuated by a medical helicopter to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte in serious condition.

The nine kids were taken to various local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, and the driver was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries, NCSHP said.

Police said the 51-year-old bus driver was cited for failure to maintain lane control.

The bus operates as handicapped transportation and services multiple schools in the Burke County District. Burke County Public Schools did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for comment and more information.

In statements to local outlets , the school district said at least five of the students had been released after being evaluated or treated for injuries.

“We are grateful that except for some bumps and bruises, the students involved in this morning’s bus incident are doing well,” Burke County Public Schools superintendent Mike Swan said in a statement to WBTV. “We will continue to provide support to them as they heal physically and emotionally. We also are grateful that the bus driver’s injuries appear to be minor as well. Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to the bus monitor and her family.”

never never again

The application works correctly, but the company as a carrier is very bad. Last week I ran into such a problem when I bought a ticket from Philadelphia to New York. I came to the bus stop in advance , but by the appointed time the bus was not at the stop and several people had accumulated who also did not understand what was going on . Later it turned out that in connection with the marathon in the city , they decided to postpone the stop and did not notify the passengers who bought a ticket and thought that the stop would be at the old place . I contacted the support service and I had to stand in the cold for an hour figuring out all the circumstances of this case . Well, the only answer to all my requests was that I had to somehow guess myself that the stop would be postponed. The support service also informed me that all the information is indicated in my ticket , but I have a screenshot that there is a stop in the ticket at the old place where I was waiting for the bus . The company did not suffer any damage to itself , but I had to get to the train station and buy a train ticket . Next time I prefer not to use the service of this company . And I will prefer a company that cares about its passengers and tries to convey important information in a more vivid way . Anyone who wants to use the services of this carrier as a last resort, you know you can lose money and health hoping for not high-quality.

Developer Response ,

Hello Giocondala, We're very sorry to hear about your experience. Please, use the feedback section of our website: help.flixbus.com. If we can see the details like stop names and on which trip this happened, we can take care of it. Thank you! Best Wishes, Pia from FlixBus
The app is fine. This bus line is absolute garbage. I booked a ride from the 22nd to the 26th of December and they changed my bus ticket to the 24th without any compensation. On my ride to Vegas from Los Angeles, the bus supposedly had no heat and the entire bus felt like an ice chest. I got sick. Then on my bus ride back, I went to the address in my email but we didn’t see anyone over there. After I called customer service about 3 times I finally got an answer and they told me that the actual stop was a little over 2 blocks away from where I was supposed to be. I would have made it to my bus had they given me the correct address. I asked to speak to a supervisor since I was given an incorrect address and there was no way for them to rebook me on to the next bus ride home. I basically had to buy a whole new ticket. I am a young woman and the area they had me waiting at was less than safe. Anything could have happened. Luckily my brother was able to take me back to my mother’s house but I missed important appointments back home because of the unprofessionalism I experienced with this company. Just use Greyhound instead. Had I not had family here, I would’ve been in an even tougher spot, especially especially since I was 35 minutes away from where I was staying. I believe this bus line is a scam. Do NOT go through them especially if you’re a young woman traveling alone at night.
I would leave zero stars if I could. I was excited to try it out as it was fairly cheap to go to Las Vegas. I was even happy that it allowed you to reserve seats for an extra fee. I was nervous about our group having to separate on the bus so being able to do that seemed great. The bus arrived early and I thought everything would be ok. As soon as we boarded we saw that there was no numbers on the seats and the bus had already made a few stops before us so we were stuck with trying to get seats together. We had reserved seats at the front and we ended up in the back near the bathroom which we wanted to avoid. On the our trip back to LA, the bus was late. We received one notification that it would arrive at 8:50pm instead of 7:55 like it was supposed to but it did not arrive until past 9:30pm. It was not even a FlixBus it was a charter bus which had no WiFi, no outlets, and like the first ride, no numbered seating. So once again we had to scramble to get seats together. I have since sent several emails and even contacted them on their twitter accounts to get my money back for the seat reservations and I have been ignored. I would advise everyone to go with a more reputable bus company that you can trust. FlixBus will take your money and they don’t care if you even make it back in time as by the time we got to the station the regular buses and trains had already stopped running.

A new discount bus route from Toronto will help you explore Ontario

Latest Videos

Discount bus company FlixBus has expanded with a new route from Toronto to help residents better explore Ontario without breaking the bank.

Leading up to the province's prime hiking, camping and outdoor exploration months, the brand has just launched service between downtown T.O. and Sudbury, connecting the province's biggest city with its northeast (and everywhere in between).

Buses run twice per day, every day except for Tuesdays, starting at Union Station with stops at Toronto Pearson International Airport, Parry Sound, Port Severn, Waubaushene and two points in Sudbury.

The departure times from Toronto are at 8:30 a.m. (from Union) and 9:05 a.m. (from Pearson), and from Sudbury, at 2.30 p.m. (from the Ontario Northland Terminal) and 2:50 p.m. (from the Four Corners). Tickets for the four-to-five-hour trip run from $49 to $59 one-way.

New discount bus routes will let you explore Ontario for less than the average bar tab https://t.co/DZ5qWTv6H1 #Ontario — blogTO (@blogTO) August 2, 2022

For those coming to the big city from up north, FlixBus offers a ton of connections to places like Niagara Falls , the U.S., Alberta, B.C., Quebec and all across Ontario , with service to and from cities like London, Kitchener, Hamilton, Peterborough, Oshawa, Kingston, Ottawa, Windsor, St. Catharines and Mississauga.

Though it only recently arrived in Canada in 2022 , the low-cost travel line was founded in Germany in 2011 and has long been huge in and around Europe.

It now boasts more than 400,000 routes across 43 countries including Canada, the U.S., India, all over the EU, and more. Last year , it integrated its Flix North America arm with Greyhound, which it acquired in 2018.

Is it safe to drive during the solar eclipse?

travel app by bus

The upcoming solar eclipse will mean lots of folks looking to the skies on Monday.

That might raise a key question for you, especially if you expect to be on the road that day.

Is it safe to drive during the eclipse?

“Since they are such a rare occurrence, we don’t often think about how an eclipse might impact driving conditions due to the unique challenges it brings to roadway safety,” according to Katie Bower, director of the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning. “As the eclipse unfolds, and visibility decreases, drivers and pedestrians should be extra cautious, patient and alert to ensure everyone makes it home safely.”

Bower noted that “we’ve heard that many Michiganders are heading to Ohio to view the eclipse and we urge everyone who will be traveling to buckle up, slow down and drive for the conditions, so we can all enjoy this rare event safely with family and friends.”

Only a very small piece of Michigan, around Luna Pier , is expected to be in the so-called path of totality, but Michiganders elsewhere will still experience varying degrees of the spectacle.

It’s not safe to look at the sun with the naked eye , and for the vast majority of us it won’t be safe to watch any part of the eclipse without protective eyewear at any point.

But what happens when you’re on the road? For starters, do not try to watch the eclipse if you're driving.

What's the advice for driving during the eclipse?

Various agencies have been offering tips. Here’s what AAA Michigan recommends:

  • Keep your vehicle’s headlights on.
  • Put the sun visor down to block your view of the sun.
  • Don’t wear eclipse glasses while driving.
  • Don’t try to photograph or video the eclipse while driving.
  • Don’t pull over to the side of the road, highway or interstate to view the eclipse.
  • Exit the roadway and park in a safe area away from traffic to view the eclipse.
  • Be mindful of pedestrians who may be walking around with their eyes on the sky.

A group focused on rail safety even put out its own advisory for Monday warning drivers and eclipse watchers to “stay clear of railroad tracks and trains.”

Federal Highway Administrator Shailen Bhatt advised in a video safety message that “this rare event may be a once in a lifetime for some but could have widespread impacts on the traveling public, so please plan ahead to arrive early and if you can, stay put to avoid traffic congestion. … Don’t have an eclipse in judgment. Be safe.”

What's the data show?

There doesn’t appear to be a ton of data on how eclipses affect road safety. The data around what for Michigan was a partial solar eclipse in August 2017 showed a decrease in crashes based on activity for the same day two weeks before and afterward, according to the state Office of Highway Safety Planning.

But circumstances elsewhere were more directly affected by the event. Places that saw a total eclipse that year attracted lots of visitors and extra road activity as evidenced by a photo from the Wyoming Department of Transportation included in a Federal Highway Administration document about eclipse preparations. That photo showed bumper-to-bumper traffic on a rural highway.

A research letter posted on the Journal of the American Medical Association website highlighted national data for the 2017 eclipse, which would include those areas that experienced a total eclipse. It found an increase in fatal crashes at that time.

“In absolute terms, this averaged to 1 extra crash-involved person every 25 minutes and 1 extra crash fatality every 95 minutes,” according to the letter.

The study cited increases in traffic, travel on unfamiliar roads, speeding to arrive on time, driver distraction, viewing from unsafe roadside locations and drug- or alcohol-induced impairment related to eclipse celebrations beyond just changes in lighting as factors.

More than 200 million people are within driving range of the upcoming eclipse the letter noted, highlighting the potential for out-of-the-ordinary traffic safety issues next week.
