In southern Italy,  Naples is the third-largest city in the country, trailing only  Rome and fashion-forward  Milan , and continues to be a hive of activity. The city is full of vibrant  artistic scenes , historic hotspots and some of the best beaches in the region. It's also played supporting roles in many  Hollywood hits . But, maybe most importantly, it is the birthplace of pizza. The hotels are equally as charming – tip-to-toe in Pompeiian mosaic tiles and gallery-esque walls against the azure blue waters right outside your window. From boutique boltholes in Rione Sanità to revitalised grande dames in Centro Storico, these are the best hotels in Naples.

Duomo House, Centro Storico

Best for: Neapolitan fun

With his wry Neapolitan wit, Richard Glenn Kiley (whose father is American) likes to shrug himself off as a charlatan hotelier; ignore him. Alongside best friend Roberto Mastrangelo he has opened five acclaimed B&Bs since 2014 across  Naples  injecting some pep into a dull accommodation scene. In each, they worked around the historical quirks of abandoned apartments, repurposing equally quirky antique finds. A Bourbon cot becomes a brass installation at the new Duomo House, overlooking Naples Cathedral, where a Roman-era pillar juts at the centre of the velvet banquettes of reception. Cheeky humour abounds: at Dante House wooden ceiling lamps are inspired by  scarabottoli  the boxes in which unnamed skulls were adopted in the cult of the Pezzentelle.

Artemisia Domus, Centro Storico

Best for: bedroom views

Peering down from a former Bourbon brothel into the paradisal orange gardens of Santa Chiara cloister, Artemisia Domus’s eight rooms (including four spa suites) are named after the female protagonists of Neapolitan baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi. Cleopatra displays suitable drama with distressed Egyptian gold walls, regal velvets and a corner treatment bath. But the woman who really defines the space here is Isabella Amato, who offset her son and owner Sebastiano’s renovations two years ago with pink Verner Panton S chairs, an art  library  and her own paintings. Her homemade cakes are served for breakfast on gold plates matching the morning light on Capodimonte Hill.

Primo Piano Posillipo, Posillipo

Best for: new design

Architect Giuliano Andrea Dell’Uva grew up in the grand clifftop villas of Posillipo, the Roman seaside resort that came to epitomise La Dolce Vita in the mid-20th century. And it is to this period – and the Seventies – that he returned in 2018 for the design of four-bedroom B&B Primo Piano, set up by friends Francesca and Alessandro on the first floor of a Liberty-style 19th-century palazzo. Italian design pieces and uplifting Vietri reissue tiles in banana yellows and peacock blues create the retro maritime feel for aperitivos at Bar Moccia in the 15th-century Palazzo Donn’ Anna and fried octopus and rock-bathing at Marechiaro lido. SuperOtium, Rione Sanità

Best for: art

Naples is 'muse and stage' to the contemporary art scene, that lifelong friends Nicola Cancio and Vincenzo Falcone connect their B&B guests to. They host a permanent artist in residence and in-house shows by names such as Simona da Pozzo and Blasepheme. A few years ago, they transformed this tiled Bourbon apartment opposite the Archeological Museum into a high-minded B&B and modernist haven with Pompeiian mosaic drapes, Hockney-swimming-pool blues, giant light bulbs (for big ideas) and intelligentsia-worthy bistro chairs, some purloined from their parents’ houses.

Grand Hotel Vesuvio, Santa Lucia

Best for: opera and old-school luxury

Once the Naples home of Oscar Wilde, Émile Zola, Pablo Picasso and Igor Stravinsky, this coat-tailed veteran of the grand-hotel scene has stood like a maestro on the waterfront conducting the bay since 1882. Enrico Caruso was a permanent resident: his pharmacy cabinet and piano are still in his suite (531 & 2). Inside Umbertine-era Naples is immaculately preserved, a time of white-glove service, red-carpeted ballrooms, gold silk brocade walls, walnut writing desks and Murano chandeliers the size of cherry trees. (A few doors down, time stands still in 1953 on the preserved Gio Ponti-designed floor of the Royal Intercontinental).

Atelier Inès Arts & Suites, Rione Sanità

Best for: design

Opened in early summer 2021, this small hotel (just six individually designed rooms) serves as a showcase for artist Annibale Oste, whose works from the 1960s onwards are collected here. The building itself has an interesting back story, a family home on the site of an open-air cinema and theatre dating back to 1900, in the middle of the Vergini neighbourhood. The ground floor was home to Oste's art studio, but it evolved under his son Vincenzo, who has now decided to open it up to guests. Nearby is Ciro Oliva, the Michelin-starred pizza restaurant, and Pasticceria Poppella – both of which will be involved in culinary experiences for those staying here, and landmarks such as the city's opera house and catacombs.

1. Palazzo Caracciolo

On the edge of the centro storico, the 145-room Caracciolo, in a 13th-century palazzo, was once home to Gioacchino Napoleone Murat, the controversial king of Naples from 1808 to 1815. These days, it has less of a regal and more of a business feel, but for vacationers, there’s a courtyard bar that’s buzzing at aperitivo time, plus an in-house spa — a rarity in this city — for an evening soak. An independent restaurant, the Cloister, focuses on Neapolitan classics; the gnocchi with salt cod is excellent. Rooms are simply styled — indulge in an upgrade to the grand Partenope suite, with its ornate ceilings and funkier feel.

The design-led Dante House, along with the Bellini and the Foria House, is part of an albergo diffuso project (literally “scattered hotels” — restored rooms in historic buildings repurposed for tourism). The Dante is a six-room B&B close to the Sansevero Chapel, where Giuseppe Sanmartino’s extraordinary marble sculpture, The Veiled Christ , lies. The bedrooms in this 18th-century Naples palazzo are on the piano nobile — the soaring “noble floor” where reception rooms once stood — and are funky in style, furnished with upcycled antiques, handcrafted headboards and statement lighting. All have wrought-iron balconies and fragments of fresco on the walls, along with barrel-vaulted ceilings and original terrazzo floors. Room No 5, the deluxe family suite, sleeps six. There’s a kitchen-diner with chairs in jewel-coloured suede where guests can sit and watch the world go by in Piazza Dante.

3. Grand Hotel Vesuvio

The grandest of all the city’s grandes dames, Vesuvio has an illustrious history (notable residents include Picasso, Zola, Stravinsky and Caruso, whose piano remains in his former suite). Its knockout Santa Lucia seafront location overlooks the Castel dell’Ovo, while inside there is a faded-luxe atmosphere with silk-brocade walls, walnut writing desks, huge potted palms and Murano chandeliers. The 160 bedrooms (21 of which are suites, some with ample terraces) are classic Umbertino-style, with parquet floors, traditional furnishings and marble bathrooms, though modern beds are cloud-soft and sheets, pleasingly, linen. A sunset negroni at the tenth-floor Sky Lounge will reward you with outstanding views of the Gulf of Naples.

4. Atelier Ines Arts & Suites

£££ | Best for original art

This tiny hotel (just six individually designed rooms and suites) in edgy Rione Sanita is a showcase for the work of artist Annibale Oste — and therein lies a tale. The Ostes built their family home in 1947 on the site of an open-air theatre and cinema: Annibale’s ground-floor studio has now been turned by his son and daughter-in-law, jewellers Vincenzo and Ines, into a gallery for his art and an exhibition space, while his sculptures, furniture and mirrors decorate the bedrooms above. Opt for the Pulcinella junior suite, with its dinky terrace, or Marea, its dramatic design influenced by the sea. From here, it’s just two minutes to Ciro Oliva’s Concettina ai Tre Santi — one of the finest pizzerias in the city.

Architect Kenzo Tang’s high-tech glass and steel hotel down by the docks is a masterclass in industrial design. The open-plan public areas provide wall space for the owner’s phenomenal collection of contemporary art, which jostles with a furniture gallery that’s a checklist of mid-century Italian greats. The 79 bedrooms and suites, in soothing dark woods with sea-green accents, have floor-to-ceiling windows with views out across the Bay of Naples to Vesuvius. On the tenth floor, the Michelin-starred Il Comandante restaurant serves Neapolitan cuisine with a modern twist. 6. Duomo House

£ | Best for being at the heart of the action

Some of the most exciting B&B projects in Naples come under the umbrella of alberghi diffusi . Duomo House, in a palazzo still owned by an order of nuns and overlooking the city’s flamboyant cathedral, is one such example. It’s part of a bigger project by Richard Glenn Kiley and Roberto Mastrangelo (this house is their fifth), who have created a quirky five-room hideaway in an elegant shell and filled it with cheeky antiques: a brass Bourbon cot becomes an art installation, while a Roman pillar holds up the ceiling in reception. The delightful Via San Gregorio Armeno, with its shops dedicated to handmade Christmas nativity figures, is just five minutes’ walk from here.

7. Eurostars Hotel Excelsior

£££ | Best for seafront views

One of Naples’ original grand hotels, the seafront Excelsior has had a serious facelift and emerged substantially refreshed. Down on the pedestrianised Lungomare, where Neapolitans gather for the evening passeggiata , this belle époque beauty’s 100 rooms and 22 suites have had their parquet floors repolished, rose damask walls retouched and antique furnishings restored, while the public areas’ marble hallways, glittering chandeliers and grand staircases are as glamorous as ever. 8. Primo Piano Posillipo

In the steep seaside neighbourhood of Posillipo, architect Giuliano Andrea dell’Uva has gone back to the 1970s in his designs for this four-bedroom B&B on the first floor (Primo Piano) of a Liberty-style 19th-century palazzo. The vibe here is thoroughly retro: a little bit Gio Ponti, a little bit Charles and Ray Eames, offset by maritime highlights in blues, greens and yellows on tiles and stained glass for that vintage beach-club feel. Opt for the airy Donn’Anna suite for blistering sea views and don’t miss the wonderfully hospitable Francesca and Alessandro’s top-notch breakfasts.

9. Hotel San Francesco al Monte

This former monastery from the 16th century, on the road up to leafy Vomero, is now an hôtel de charme in every sense: 45 rooms, some in once-spartan cells, with vaulted ceilings, terracotta floors, white walls, dark woods and wrought iron. The original frescoed refectory and chapel of San Giovan Giuseppe della Croce remain intact, but best of all are the magnificent roof gardens with a pool gouged out of the rock, the open-air Il Vigneto restaurant (the monks cultivated grapes up here), and the great views. The wine theme continues with vinotherapy treatments in the spa, too.

What was once a Bourbon brothel in the centro storico has been transformed by mother and son Isabella and Sebastiano Amato into an eight-room B&B named after Neapolitan baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi. Bedrooms (four of which are spa suites) look down onto the cloister of Santa Chiara, one of the loveliest spots in the city, and are named for Gentileschi’s heroines; Cleopatra, with its timbered ceiling and exposed plaster walls, is particularly dramatic. Isabella’s own paintings are on show throughout — and her homemade cakes are a highlight for breakfast.

If the high-end shopping streets of Chiaia are where you plan to spend your time — and money — in Naples, the 35-room Palazzo Alabardieri is an excellent base.
