Arizona Travel ID will be mandatory starting May 2023

PHOENIX — The Arizona Travel ID will be mandatory for travelers starting exactly one year from today.

Beginning on May 3, 2023, you will need a federally compliant ID in order to get through TSA checkpoints at airports for domestic flights, the Arizona Department of Transportation says.

The pandemic caused delays in the process and ultimately pushed back the date.

“Without the Arizona Travel ID or other form of federally-compliant identification such as a valid U.S. Passport, fliers risk missing an airline flight because the standard driver license will not be accepted at TSA checkpoints,” ADOT says.

Identification cards that are federally approved have a gold star in the corner.

You can walk in to get a Travel ID, but ADOT suggests making an appointment first .

You’ll need to bring proof of identity (birth certificate or US passport), social security number, and two documents proving your residency (rental or bank statements, credit card or phone bills) at your current address.

The ID costs $25.

Where Can I Get a Travel ID in Arizona?

Worried that you’re not compliant with the Real ID act that is about to take effect for Arizonians on May 3, 2023?

So far, Arizona has allocated approximately 1.7 million Travel IDs as of July 6, with 202,559 in 2022. And when the new requirements come into play next May, Real IDs will be a requirement in order for you to board any aircraft or enter secure federal buildings.

We know this all sounds a little intimidating, but don’t worry. We’ve got you covered. Keep reading because this article will tell you everything you need to know about getting a Travel ID Arizona, including the requirements and where to go.

What Is a Travel ID?

A travel ID is an identification document that allows you to travel both domestically and internationally. It contains your name, photograph, and other identifying information such as your date of birth, gender, and address.

If you plan to travel outside of the United States, you will need a passport. A passport is a travel ID that is issued by the federal government and is valid for 10 years. If you do not have a passport, you can apply for one at a passport acceptance facility.

If you are traveling within the United States, you may be able to use an alternative form of ID such as a driver’s license or state-issued ID card. However, some states now require that you have a travel ID to board an airplane.

Am I Required to Get an Arizona Travel ID?

If you plan to fly domestically, the answer is yes. The REAL ID Act was enacted by Congress and it set unique measures for the issuance of driver’s licenses and state-issued ID cards.

To board a domestic flight, you will need an ID that meets the requirements of the REAL ID Act. A driver’s license or state-issued ID card from a compliant state will work.

If your state is not in keeping with the REAL ID Act, you will need an alternative form of ID such as a passport. Arizona is not currently in keeping with the REAL ID Act, so if you plan to fly domestically, you will need an alternative form of ID.

Can I Still Use My Current License to Board an Airplane?

 The act set benchmarks for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards and required them to be more tamper-resistant and to include security features such as a digital photograph and Social Security number. The act also created a deadline for states to comply with the new standards.

Originally, that deadline was January 1, 2008. However, it has been pushed back several times, and the current deadline is May 2023 . This means that if your state is not compliant with the REAL ID Act by that date, you will need an alternative form of ID such as a passport to board a domestic flight.

Fortunately, many states are already compliant with the REAL ID Act, so the extended majority of Americans will not be impacted by this change. However, if your state is currently non-compliant, you should start making plans now to get an alternative form of ID. Otherwise, you may find yourself grounded come May 2023.

What Are the Arizona Travel ID Requirements?

The requirements for an Arizona travel ID are the same as the requirements for any other state-issued ID. Let’s look at them in more detail:

• You must be a U.S. citizen
• You must have a Social Security number
• You must have proof of your identities such as a birth certificate or passport
• You must have two forms of documentation that show your Arizona address such as a utility bill or bank statement
• You will need to provide proof of your name change if it is different from the name on your proof of identity documents

Now that you know the requirements for an Arizona Travel ID, let’s look at what it will cost you.

How Much Does an Arizona Travel ID Cost?

The cost of the initial application is $25, and it’s valid for eight years. If you need to renew your travel ID, the cost is reduced to $12.50. Keep in mind that you’ll also need to provide proof of identity and residency when applying for the travel ID.

If you don’t have a passport or other form of identification, be sure to bring along your birth certificate or naturalization papers. With everything in order, you can relax and enjoy your trip knowing that you’re properly prepared.

Where Can I Get an Arizona Travel ID?

You can get an Arizona travel ID at any GG&D office or authorized third-party provider. You will need to bring the required documents with you and you will need to pay the fee.

When you apply for your travel ID, you will have your photograph taken and your fingerprints will be captured. This information will be stored in a secure database and it will be used to verify your identity when you use your travel ID.

Coming to Alabama: Newsom’s Abortion-Access Ad, Depicting an Arrest

A woman nervously peers into her rearview mirror as a patrolman activates his car’s lights and sirens. She is less than a mile from leaving Alabama to seek abortion services, but it’s too late: The next thing she knows, she is being handed a pregnancy test and is handcuffed.

The encounter is depicted in an unvarnished new television ad called “Fugitive.” The Campaign for Democracy, a political action committee created by Gov. Gavin Newsom, Democrat of California, produced the ad.

It will appear on Monday in Alabama, where Republicans have called for prosecuting women who travel elsewhere for an abortion. The state’s abortion ban, one of the nation’s strictest, outlaws the procedure at all stages of pregnancy, with no exceptions for rape and incest.

“Trump Republicans want to criminalize young Alabama women who travel for reproductive care,” the ad’s narrator says.

The ad then shows the patrolman approaching the vehicle: “Miss, I’m going to need you to step out of the vehicle,” he says, tapping the kit on the driver’s side door, “take a pregnancy test.”

The ad is scheduled to run on broadcast and cable television, along with digital platforms like YouTube, for two weeks, according to the PAC. The cost of the ad buy was not immediately available.

Alabama’s attorney general, Steve Marshall, a Republican, has clashed with the Justice Department and abortion assistance providers over whether the state has the authority to prosecute individuals or groups that help women leave the state to have the procedure.

Last month, Republicans introduced a bill in the Alabama House that would make it a misdemeanor to harbor or transport a minor to seek abortion services.

Mr. Newsom has emerged as a key surrogate for President Biden while harboring future White House ambitions of his own. He has regularly skirmished with G.O.P. governors and Republican-led states over abortion access, immigration, crime and other issues.

While Republicans have seized on crossings at the southern border in their messaging, Democrats have harnessed the issue of abortion-access after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. It helped propel Democratic candidates to key victories during the midterm elections in 2022 and in races last year.

In February, the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos were people with rights, casting a cloud of uncertainty over in vitro fertilization. The state later passed a law giving I.V.F. clinics criminal and civil immunity, but it did not address whether embryos have the legal status of human beings.

In another seismic ruling, the Arizona Supreme Court this month upheld an 1864 law that bans nearly all abortions. The decision could have far-reaching consequences for women’s health care and election-year politics in the state, a critical political battleground.

Mr. Newsom said in a social media post at the time that California, which borders Arizona, would provide a refuge for women affected by the decision.

“Arizona wasn’t even a state — it was a territory — when this draconian abortion ban was passed,” he said. “That’s how extreme this is. California remains ready to help Arizonans access reproductive health care.”

Amazon to launch drone delivery in metro Phoenix. Here's how it works and how to sign up

The future of unmanned delivery services is closer than it may seem — and it’s right in one of Arizona’s backyards.  

Tolleson, a small city about 11 miles west of Phoenix, will serve as the third home base for Amazon’s experimental drone project , the delivery service powerhouse announced in a news release on Monday.  

"When you're a small town in the middle of an urban landscape surrounded by major buildings and major cities, it's always cool when you can be the partner on something so grand," Tolleson Mayor Juan Rodriguez said. 

Arizona is no stranger to drone delivery, between Walmart and companies like FlyBy Robotics , but here's what you need to know about Amazon's program.

When is Amazon beginning drone delivery in Arizona? 

No specific date or month has been set for the drone delivery to launch, according to the news release. However, Amazon noted that drone deliveries will start in the West Valley in Tolleson.  

Amazon is still coordinating with the Federal Aviation Administration and Tolleson officials to ensure everything is in place for the program to commence.  

Where will drone deliveries come from?  

Amazon has already established several same-day delivery sites across the Valley, and the drones will be situated near Tolleson’s site during the experimental period.  

“These smaller sites are hybrid — part fulfillment center, part delivery station,” Amazon’s news release noted. “They allow us to fulfill, sort, and deliver products all from one site so we can get packages out to our customers even quicker.”

Where in metro Phoenix can I receive Amazon drone deliveries? 

Once the program is clear to start, it will only operate within a 7-mile radius of the distribution center, Mayor Rodriguez told The Arizona Republic. Some west Phoenix and Avondale residents will be able to receive drone deliveries. 

Which cities have Amazon drone delivery?

Amazon first implemented this program in College Station, Texas, and Lockeford, California, in 2022. The Lockeford location will be closing, the news release said, promising more drone delivery locales in 2025. The College Station site will remain open.  

What time of day will drone deliveries be available?

Amazon uses drone delivery from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday through Thursday in California, and 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m., seven days a week in College Station, Texas, Amazon said on its website . However, drone delivery isn't available during certain weather conditions.

How do I sign up for Amazon drone delivery?

West Valley residents can register for drone delivery by inputting their email address into a form . Interested parties will be contacted as FAA processes move forward, according to Amazon.

Current operations in College Station require participants to prepare their yard, have an Amazon employee survey your yard and install a marker prior to their first drone delivery.

After that, users can identify products available for drone delivery and select "today: within one hour" as the delivery option in check out. Then place the QR code delivery marker on the mini marker in your yard. Users than receive an email confirming the purchase and estimated time of the drone's arrival.

What's new with Amazon's drone delivery program? 

New drones, capable of flying in more weather conditions and carrying up to five pounds at a time, will be introduced in Tolleson.  

Amazon reported that these MK30 drones will be operative in Italy and the United Kingdom soon, but no timeline was available at the time of publication.  

How much weight can an Amazon drone carry?

Amazon is debuting new drones that can carry up to five pounds at a time. The drones were set to operate in Europe soon, though the company did not specify when they would launch.

Status and strategies of electrolyte engineering for low-temperature sodium-ion batteries.

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have attracted extensive attention owning to the unique rich reserves, excellent low temperature performance, low cost and high safety compared with widely used lithium-ion batteries. However, the applications of sodium-ion batteries once applied in extreme low temperatures are severely limited ascribing to the increase in electrolyte viscosity, the stability of SEI (solid electrolyte interphase), and the rise of de-solvation energy for sodium ion (Na+). The novel designed electrolytes that could operate at freezing cold is urgent for the further promotion and the enhanced adaptability of sodium ion batteries in extremely low temperature environment. Herein, we summarize the development states of low temperature electrolyte for sodium ion batteries from the following components, such as co-solvents, sodium salts, and additives, and then propose several general strategies of electrolytes to provide a guidance for systematic design and further commercial application of low-temperature electrolytes for SIBs.
