How to Travel More for Less Money

travel more for less by travelling off season

You’d love to travel more, but you don’t have enough money! That was my situation fresh out of university with $198 in my bank account and $28,000 in student loans.

Table of Contents

But I still managed to travel – for 2 1/2 years to be exact! Here’s how:

Admittedly, I haven’t been to university for quite some time, but for the last 20 years or so, I’ve been accumulating and testing tips that allow me to travel more while paying less. I may not be as thrifty as I once was but still, I love a bargain and hate throwing money away.

Here are my top tips for travelling more for less money:

1) reconsider what you really want from a vacation..

Maybe you really want to go to Australia. Now Australia, while lovely, is not exactly the cheapest destination, especially if you consider the cost of airfare.

Ask yourself why you really want to go to Australia. Is it for the beaches, or because you want to learn how to surf? If so, then perhaps you can find a cheaper destination that has nice beaches and great waves – like Costa Rica.

Your money will last much longer in Costa Rica and I’d bet you could very easily surf in Costa Rica for at least 3-4 times as long as you could in Australia, allowing you to travel more for the same price or less. Too often, what we think we want, is not what we really want.

choosing a cheaper destination can let you travel longer for less money

2) Be flexible when you fly.

I love Skyscanner ‘s  Find Cheapest Month and Whole Month search feature. Take a look at how much a flight from Munich, Germany to Calgary, Canada costs in July – anywhere between $520 and $930.

travel more for less money by being flexible as to which date you fly

This can make a huge difference for saving on hotels.

travel more for less money by being flexible as to which date you fly

4) Consider alternative accommodation.

Here’s where the savings can really add up! Let’s go back to our example of Banff, an expensive summer destination in the Canadian Rockies. You can book a cabin in the town of Canmore, just a 20-minute drive away, AND with a mountain view for €98! That’s a saving of €172 off the cheapest option for the Buffalo Mountain Lodge. Often, just staying slightly outside of your target area can result in huge savings.

You can often save even more by staying in an Airbnb property, especially if you’re willing to just book a bedroom, and don’t mind sharing the rest of the place with a host.

I found one private room in a shared apartment directly in Banff for €59! Alternatively, or at the same time, you can consider renting out your place on Airbnb while you’re on vacation, helping to offset your costs and enabling you to travel more!

Staying in this mountain hut in Bavaria, Germany cost us €40 for 2 people, helping us to travel more on weekends for a relatively low cost.

5) Don’t skimp on travel insurance, but don’t pay a fortune either.  The last time I didn’t have travel insurance, I ended up paying over $2500 for a hospital visit in Bangkok.

That was at a time when I was an intern at the Thai-Canadian Chamber of Commerce and made $12,000 a year! It was a very expensive lesson I learned early on in my travels, and it’s a mistake that I’ve never repeated. Kanetix.ca , is a great site that lets you compare insurance from different providers, and could result in up to 66% savings!

6) Check out the days when museums are discounted and or free.

Despite London being an expensive city, many of its museums are free all the time. That way you can splurge on afternoon tea!

In Munich , where I live, many museums only cost €1 admission on Sundays, saving over €5 on each admission ticket, then if you went on a different day!

purchase a city card to receive discounts on attractions, allowing you to travel more for less money

7) Consider a City Tourist Card. You’ll find these in many major cities around the world on the tourism page for that city. For a fee, you’ll receive either a free entrance or a discount at major tourist attractions and free public transportation.

They’re often a good deal and can you save you a lot of money, but you need to do your research first. It’s also important to be realistic about which of the free/reduced fee attractions you’ll actually visit.

8) Use a free or cheap walking tour app instead of a guided tour.

Many cities have free or very reasonably priced walking tour apps. In addition to saving you money, you’re free to explore on your own, and if you’re not interested in a particular attraction, you can simply bypass it.

I often find these preferable to large guided group tours of 20+ tourists where it’s difficult to hear the guide. This can easily save you over $10 per person.

9)Travel Slightly Off-Season.

Now, I’m not suggesting that you visit Europe in the dead of winter, although the Christmas markets are lovely, travelling slightly offseason can save you hundreds of dollars on flights and hotels.

In addition, it’s often a much more pleasant experience. Many travellers visit Europe in August. That’s the worst possible time in my opinion.

That’s when many Europeans take a vacation, especially Italians and the French. As a result, many small mom and pop stores are shut down in August, and these are often some of the most charming places, which tourists end up missing out on.

Not only that, but everything is so busy. Lines to popular attractions can easily be several hours. I think Europe is most beautiful in either spring, April through June or in fall, September and October.

You’ll still benefit from the hopefully nice weather, but flights and hotels will be a LOT cheaper. Depending on your vacation, travelling slightly offseason could easily save you $1000 per person!

Greece in fall - a great time to visit and to save money since it's off season!

10)Travel longer by travelling less.

You can save a ton of money by staying in one place. I’m not suggesting that you stay home, but by staying in one place, you may easily be able to extend your stay by several months or even by several years.

One way to do so is by volunteering. In exchange for your labour, many places will give you free room and board and 1-2 days off a week to explore. helpStay is one site that lists a lot of worldwide opportunities, including helping out a camel farm in Australia! WWOOFing is another great opportunity in which you will work on an organic farm in exchange for room and board.

You may even be able to extend your stay to a couple of years as I did by teaching English as a Second Language, first in S. Korea, then in Thailand, followed by an internship in Bangkok.

a business that you can run from a laptop means you can travel longer

Having a location independent business has led me to live in Munich, Germany for over 8 years so far.

Alternatively, you could start your own location independent business and choose a low-cost place to base yourself for a few months or years at a time, such as Chiang Mai, a popular destination with digital nomads.

As a travel blogger , I can work from anywhere but choose to make Munich my base. After living here for eight years, I’m still grateful that I’ve been able to find a way to travel more without the high costs of a vacation!

I’d love to hear what your tips are for travelling more for less money! Let me know in the comments below!

22 Ways to Travel More—Even On a Small Budget

Jessica Spiegel

Jessica Spiegel

September 19, 2023

There are plenty of people who wish they could travel more, and dozens of reasons why those same people may think that’s an unachievable goal. The phrase, “I’d like to travel more” is very often followed by, “but…”

Sure, some trips may be on the once-in-a-lifetime end of the scale, and if you’re struggling to pay bills, travel may not be in your immediate future. But if you’re looking to maximize the amount of travel you can do with limited vacation time, a busy schedule, or a tight budget , you’re in luck. We’re living in the golden age of travel, and exploring the world has never been easier, more accessible, or cheaper.

Here are 22 ways to get more travel in your life.

1. Take shorter trips more often.

When you have a limited number of vacation days from your job, using them all at once means you’ll spend the rest of the year waiting for new vacation days to kick in. Using a few here and there means you’re traveling more often throughout the year. And when international flights often cost less than traveling across the US (like NYC nonstop to Madrid for $275 roundtrip, or Los Angeles to Shanghai for $313 roundtrip), it’s easier to justify a week-long trip to Asia or a weekend jaunt to Europe.

2. Take advantage of long weekends and holidays...

This tactic has drawn criticism—and for good reason. In order to  maximize your PTO using this  specific plan, you need at least 40 days of PTO and the company you work for must observe federal holidays. So maybe you can’t do this exact plan, but by scheduling even one or two of your trips around holidays, you can get some bonus days to extend what you already have. And if you’re not big on a major holiday that gives you extra time off at work (such as Christmas or New Year’s), use that opportunity to take a trip. You can also maximize your time in the destination by departing for your trip after work and returning late in the evening the day before you’re due back in the office.

For example, by taking off May 28–31, four days of vacation becomes nine days off work, given the weekends and Memorial Day. Rather than a long weekend, you’d then have plenty of time to head for, say, Europe.

Speaking of weekends, don’t underestimate the power of a good weekend trip! Often, it requires little to no PTO, and as  our research has shown us , having further-out trips planned produces the most joy. More, shorter trips planned throughout the year = more happiness.

Note that flight and accommodation costs are known to spike around the holidays, so unfortunately this is not going to be the best way to help you  travel more on a budget .

3. ...And shoulder seasons...

Shoulder season —the period between peak season and off season—is the perfect storm of good prices, decent weather, and slightly smaller crowds. Every part of the world has its own shoulder seasons, generally based on weather. In many regions, though, spring (roughly March–April) and autumn (roughly September–October) are considered shoulder seasons. Cut down on airfare, accommodations, and activities during these times, and you could put the savings toward another shoulder-season (or even peak-season) trip.

4. ...And 2-for-1 tickets and long layovers.

Our job isn’t to make you love  layovers , but as they are sometimes inevitable, we’re here to show you how to use them to your advantage. Picture it like a whole other city that you get to explore on the way to your final destination. Nowadays, airlines have built itineraries for the sole purpose of enabling travelers to see a new city on the way, with  2-in-1 tickets and  stopovers . We send quite a few of these deals to our members; two of the most recent include LAX to Rio de Janeiro with a stop in Lima, and Detroit, NYC, or Baltimore to tons of European cities with a stop in Iceland.

Once you see that layovers don’t  have  to be a burden, you open up a whole new world of possibilities. And who knows, maybe you’ll fall in love with that layover destination, and it will become your next final destination.

5. Go where—and when—the deals dictate.

Most people decide where they want to go, pick their dates, and then look for flights. We recommend flipping that script. If you’re open to a range of destinations, keep an eye out for deals and book when you see something you like. Having some wiggle room around dates can also help; sometimes the price can be significantly lower if you change your dates even by a single day. By being flexible, you can save big.

>> Read our guide to using the Google Flights Explore map to find the cheapest place to go.

6. Prioritize inexpensive destinations.

We’ve all got those lists of places we’ve dreamed of going for ages, but those aren’t necessarily budget-friendly destinations. If money is what’s holding you back from more trips, help each dollar go farther by heading to places that are cheaper to travel in. Places in South America, Southeast Asia, and Eastern Europe, for example, tend to be on the less expensive end of the spectrum.

>> Check out our list of the world’s cheapest destinations

7. Work remotely when possible.

woman working from a cafe.

You don’t have to turn into a digital nomad in order to work remotely. Find out whether your company would be amenable to the idea and, if they’re open to it, give it a test run or two to prove your efficiency. The ability to work remotely, even occasionally or for part of your trip, can help you stretch out limited vacation days. Yes, you’d be working part of the day, but when you turn off your computer you’re still on vacation.

Companies like Remote Year offer programs, spanning from one month to a year, that fix you up with accommodations, professional coworking spaces, and support to make your remote work experience a little easier.

>> Read our guide to combining work and travel .

8. Examine your prioritizes and eliminate expenses.

This takes a little soul-searching and a lot of honesty, but it can be worth it. Consider the things you spend your disposable income on, and then examine whether those expenses reflect how important each thing is to you. Maybe you can swap your daily coffee shop run for coffee you make at home. You might be able to do more second-hand shopping, stretch out the time between salon visits, or cut down on ordering takeout. And perhaps you don’t really need Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, and HBO. Cutting out even $80-$100 per month could quickly add up to an extra trip.

9. Stay focused on goals.

Once you’ve decided you’re going to travel more, it’s important to reinforce your commitment to that goal—especially if it requires changes to your routine. Think of any potential expenses in travel terms (this season’s must-have boots might be another night in a budget hotel, for instance). It may even help to put out visual reminders, like a guidebook or photo of the place you’re planning to visit, so you don’t lose sight of how sacrifices you’re making now will pay off later.

10. Try house sitting or home exchanges.

While house sitting (or pet sitting) means someone else’s travel schedule is dictating when and where you go, it also means you’re not paying for accommodation when you get there. And, if you own your home, doing a home exchange can be a fun way to explore another place on a budget and get someone to take care of your house while you’re gone. Sites like Trusted Housesitters connect homeowners and house and pet sitters. (Going members save on a Trusted Housesitters membership; log into Going and head to our Membership Perks page to redeem.)

11. List your own place when you’re away.

Anytime you’re out of town, listing your home on a home sharing site like Airbnb means you could make money while you’re traveling. While it can be a big undertaking to make sure you and your home are equipped for guests, it could pay off. More money in your account means more trips in the future, and more opportunity to earn while you’re away, so it’s a self-perpetuating cycle.

12. Get a side gig.

If you’ve got talents beyond what you do from 9-to-5—or if the skills you use in your day job are in demand on the freelance market—consider taking on some extra work to fill your travel fund. The ever expanding gig economy means there are dozens of options, such as selling handicrafts (like woodworking or sewing), driving for a ride-sharing company, walking dogs, tutoring, or even running errands or being a virtual assistant.

13. Use a budgeting app to save.

Financial apps can help you with just about any budgeting challenge. You Need a Budget helps you figure out how much you can spend on travel, while Acorns rounds up your purchases so you can save with minimal effort. If setting aside money for a trip feels like too much of an abstract concept, there’s an app for that, too. Albert lets you move money into a specific budget when you’re saving so you can see your money grow in a more tangible fashion.

14. Find a travel buddy or group...

group of travelers taking selfie on the beach.

When you’re not comfortable traveling alone, you’ve got options. Maybe your book group wants to plan a trip to the setting of a favorite novel, or your best friend is interested in the same trip you’ve been planning. There are lots of group tours that offer built in companionship as well. Companies like Intrepid, Contiki, and Globus offer tours based on age group, travel, style, or whatever you’re into, from river cruises to long-distance biking.

>> Get tips for traveling with friends

15. ...Or go solo.

If your friends and family aren’t into traveling and you don’t want to do a group tour, you still don’t have to turn into a homebody. There are lots of resources to make solo travel easier, from the above-mentioned tours and cruise lines (many of which don’t charge an extra fee for a single room) to virtual communities of other solo travelers sharing tips.

>> Check out some tips for solo travel from our Travel Community.

16. Negotiate for more vacation days.

Just because your company offers a certain number of vacation days doesn’t mean that’s set in stone. You may be able to get a few extra days, or work out a flex-time arrangement so that when you work overtime you can “bank” some of those hours to take additional days off. The best times to ask: when negotiating a new job, receiving a promotion, or during your annual review.

>> Get tips for negotiating more vacation time here.

17. Extend work trips.

If you’re fortunate enough to travel for work even occasionally, turn your business obligation into a fun experience by adding a day or two to your trip after you’re done with work. Even if it’s not a place you’ve always wanted to visit, part of the fun is discovering what to do there—or figuring out what side trips you can take. Depending on where you’re going, you may be able to easily and cheaply hop from your business trip destination to another spot with more personal appeal.

>> Read our tips for getting around cheaply in Europe .

18. Be sure your credit card earns rewards.

Credit card rewards can go a long way toward enriching your travel budget, so long as you don’t carry a balance. If you pay off your credit card bill each month, look into a card that offers frequent flyer miles, hotel points, or the ability to “erase” travel expenses. Then, everything from groceries to gas to a doctor’s visit can help offset the cost of your next trip; once you’ve racked up enough points, you can use those to pay for part or all of your next flight, so it’s basically nothing out of your pocket.

>> Here’s how to  get started with points and miles if you’re new to the game.

19. Explore close to home.

No matter where you live, there are trips you could take from home, whether it’s for a weekend or just an afternoon. Pack a picnic and go for a scenic hike with your family. Go to a museum or gallery. Check out tours on Viator or Airbnb to find new things to do in your city. If you approach your own backyard with the same curiosity as a foreign place, you don’t even have to get on a plane to have an adventure.

20. Lose the “once-in-a-lifetime” mindset.

travel more pay less

It’s worth repeating. We’re in the golden age of travel, and international flights can often be had for just a few hundred dollars. Yet, people still often put off their dream trips because they want to wait until they can “do it right”—whether than means splashing out on a lavish hotel or going for more than two weeks. But since they can’t “do it right” at the moment, they don’t end up doing it at all. Forget about doing it right and focus on doing it now ; it may not be the exact dream trip you envisioned, but it may turn out to be exactly what you wanted.

21. Change how you define “travel.”

Using every second of your allotted two-week vacation from work in one fell swoop to take an epic overseas adventure is fantastic, but if that’s the only thing you consider “traveling” then you’re only going to get one of those per year. When the word “travel” encompasses being anywhere that’s not home for any length of time, suddenly a world of possibilities opens up.

22. Join Going.

We search dozens of websites, airlines, and OTAs to find the best deals and and when we find a cheap flight departing from you home airport, we send an email with everything you need to know to book the deal. Our members save an average of $550 per ticket with deals like $98 roundtrip to Hawaii, $486 roundtrip to Tahiti, and $270 roundtrip to Barcelona.

We search dozens of flight booking sites every day, so you don't have to. Our members save an average of $550 per ticket off average prices.

How to Travel More for Less Money

Photo of author

If you’re wondering how to travel more for less money, you’re not alone. There are so many beautiful places to explore in this world! Unfortunately, it costs money to get yourself to these places. (Darn it!)

Hang with me though, and I’ll show you ways you can travel more and pay less so you can start booking those trips!

Where would you go if money wasn’t an issue? What bucket list trip would you take? When we say “travel more” what does that mean to you?

Do you want to:

  • Simply travel more in 2023 (don’t we all??)
  • Figure out how to travel more with a full time job?
  • Travel more luxuriously?
  • Travel for free or travel the world on a budget?
  • Be able to travel more with kids?
  • Get free hotel stays and free airline tickets?

Whatever your goal is, I want to encourage you that it can be done!

How I Learned How to Travel More While Spending Less Money

Let me share a bit of our story and how I got into researching how to travel more often and pay less. We all have a story, don’t we? I mean, you didn’t land on this page willy-nilly, so I’m sure there’s a reason you’re here. Maybe your story sounds like mine.

Rodney and I have traveled a good bit, and some of our destinations have been pretty amazing. We’ve also been to some places while adopting four of our children that we would never have imagined going to.

Visiting the Great Wall of China

However, one of the places I always wanted to go and never seemed to get to was Hawaii.

We were going to go for our honeymoon (34 years ago!), but he was in the military and couldn’t get enough time off for us to go after the wedding.

Then, we were going to go for our 5th anniversary, but by then, we were pregnant with our first child, both working full time and working on our degrees at night.

Yet again, we were going to go after he graduated with his Masters Degree, but decided to adopt a child and traveled to Russia instead.

Why Don’t People Travel More Often?

There’s always something, isn’t there? Good, bad, or otherwise, something like a bucket list destination can be hard to actually make happen.

We did finally get to Maui for our 25th anniversary. It was wonderful and magical and everything I ever hoped it would be. I loved it so much!

We both agreed we wanted to come back, but since it was pretty expensive, we decided to wait for our 30th anniversary.

Is There a Way to Travel More and Pay Less?

It was on that 2nd trip I started thinking, “I wonder if there’s a way to travel more and pay less?” We were in a beautiful condo, literally right on the beach, but it came with quite a price tag.

I came home and started researching and was super excited to learn it is totally possible to travel more for less! There are definitely ways to book hotels for free, get free flights, take advantage of travel deals, and travel more often for less money. It can be done!

There’s a stunning fact that states the average American has only been to 12 states and has never left the country.

Friends, there’s a big, beautiful world out there, just waiting to be explored! If money is keeping you from exploring it, I’m here to show you some ways to remove that hurdle.

Ready to get started? Read on, because that’s exactly what this blog is about…sharing ways you can travel more for less.

Where Would You Go if You Could Travel for Free?

  • Do you want to take a bucket list destination vacation? Visit that once-in-a-lifetime place you never thought you’d actually get to go to?
  • How about planning several fun family vacations a year? Places like Hawaii and Disneyland, and the Grand Canyon?
  • Maybe you want to get the whole family together for Christmas, but airline tickets have always seemed out of the question.

How to Get Free Hotel Stays

Until I started researching, I had no idea it was possible to get free hotel stays. Here are some of the most straightforward ways to stay at hotel for free.

Credit Card Sign Up Bonuses (see our best recommendations here)

One sure way to get free hotel stays is to sign up for a hotel branded credit card and receive points as part of the sign up bonus. You can then use the points to either stay two or three nights in an upscale hotel, or you can use it for lower point properties that could get you a week or more of free hotel stays.

Here’s just one example of the kind of bonus you can get. As of this writing, Chase’s IHG Rewards Club Premier Card has a 140,000 points sign up bonus. Here are some examples of what you could do with those points.

Want to take the kids to Disneyland? You could stay at the Holiday Inn & Suites in Anaheim for only 12,500 a night!

Stay at a hotel for free when you use points to book. The Holiday Inn in Anaheim is a great way to travel more for less money. #freehotel

How about a trip to Europe? You could stay four nights at the Holiday Inn Lyon- Vaise for 12,500 points a night and three nights in London for 22,500 points, totaling 117,500 points.

travel more pay less

That’s seven nights of free hotel stays for a European vacation that you didn’t have to pay for, my friends. You simply signed up for a credit card, met the minimum spending requirements and earned your bonus points.

Hotel Sales

Stay plugged into sites like this, and make sure you don’t miss out on sales like Fairmont’s BOGO sale. They’ve run this one twice in the past year. The next time I see it, I’m going to jump at the chance to stay a night at the Fairmont Empress in Victoria, BC, and get a second night free!

Fairmont-Inn-Victoria

Get Your 3rd, 4th or 5th Night Free

Familiarize yourself with different hotel programs so you’ll know which ones can give you the most value. For example, if you’re staying four nights in the same place, IHG, Hyatt and Marriott each offer a fifth night for free. You can even redeem that if you’re using points for your stay. This is a great way to stretch either points or dollars so you can travel more for less money. We used this feature to book four nights in Oahu with points and got the fifth night free . That’s ZERO out-of-pocket money for us for five free nights in Oahu!

Timeshare Presentations

There’s another way to stay for free at hotels I want to share with you. There are many properties that sell timeshares that use free hotel stays as part of their marketing plan. In exchange for getting a free hotel stay for several nights, you sit through their 90-120 minute sales presentation. If you’re not interested in buying in (most people aren’t), then you simply say no thanks and walk out at the end of the presentation. That’s it!

Here’s an example of how we stayed three nights for free at Tahiti Village in Las Vegas. This was an advertised rate of $750 for three free nights at a hotel that more that fit our needs. Totally worth sitting through a two-hour presentation.

How to Get Free Plane Tickets

Not only can you get free hotel stays, you can also get your plane ticket for free. This can be a huge saving when you’re traveling, and it can absolutely be done! If you can’t get your flight for free, there are also some ways to find cheap airfare.

Here are some of the easiest ways to get started:

Credit Card Sign Up Bonus (see our recommendations here)

Not only can you use credit card sign-up bonuses to pay for hotels, you can often get an even better deal by using those points for plane tickets. As of this writing, the Chase Sapphire Preferred has a signup bonus of 60,000 points.

That’s enough for two round-trip flights depending on how far you’re flying and what airline you redeem your points with.

Southwest Airlines Companion Pass

Southwest offers one of the best deals around when it comes to free flights. I’ve written a complete guide on how to earn the SW companion pass . Read that so you can learn how to fly a buddy with you anywhere you go for FREE.

Alaska Airlines Companion Pass

There’s so much that I love about Southwest Companion Pass that is hard to beat. Alaska does offer a companion pass as well, though. However, it’s only good for one free flight per year. Alaska has a much bigger coverage area than Southwest, so that’s a plus in its favor. Pick the right flight and you can really save big on your free companion pass. Alaska also occasionally has BOGO sales.

Watch for Low Point Flights

Get more bang for your buck by booking when points are lower than normal. This works especially well if you can be flexible with your plans. That might mean flying on a different day than originally planned. It might also mean being open to vacation in a new place because you got a heck of a deal on a low points flight!

Although finding ways to travel for free is my favorite way to travel, sometimes you can find a deal on a flight so good it makes more sense to pay cash for it. That way, you save your points for more expensive trips you otherwise wouldn’t have gone on.

Our goal is to travel more for less money, and knowing where to look can make this much easier to accomplish.

Airline Loyalty Programs

Be sure to sign up for any airline loyalty programs you think you may fly with. This way, you won’t miss out on sales that might make sense for you to take advantage of. As I mentioned, Alaska Airlines occasionally has BOGO flights that could be a huge savings for your family.

Other Ways to Travel More While Spending Less Money

Groupon deals.

You can find some incredible deals here, if you’re willing to take the risk, because they are almost always non-refundable  For example, here’s a room for four in Kissimmee, Florida, for $38/night. Check the reviews to be sure you’re comfortable with what you can expect to get. Also, be sure to check the fine print of the deal for any extra charges. If it looks good to you, you can get a decent hotel for cheap and then spend the money you saved on excursions instead!

Groupon has last minute deals for cheap hotels so you can plan a vacation for less money.

Booking Portals

Always, always compare booking sites when paying cash. Also, learn how to stack deals so even when you pay cash up front, you’ll be getting something (cash or points) back.  Expedia is probably the most well-known, but think outside the box and look for sites like Southwest Airlines Vacation Deals or Chase Ultimate Rewards Travel if you have any Chase credit cards.

Here’s an example of a deal you can find that’s a great way to combine air and hotel for a cheap vacation package:

3 nights at Anaheim Marriott, plus airfare on Southwest Airlines from Seattle for only $261/person. Depending on how many people you’re traveling with, this could be a great way to save money on your vacation!

Checking sites for vacation deals can save money so you can travel more for less.

One of the best travel sites is the Chase Travel Portal. You can redeem points at a rate of 1.5 cents per point if you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve. That one comes with a hefty annual fee but has loads of benefits that make up for it!

You can still get 1:1 cents per point with the Chase Sapphire Preferred which has a much lower annual fee, plus you get miles for using the card itself. (If this seems confusing, be sure to sign up for my newsletter so I can send you money-saving info on how to travel more for less money.)

More Tips on How to Travel More and Save Money

Believe it or not, there are plenty more ways to save money on travel. Here are a few ideas for you to consider.

Book a Hotel or Vrbo With a Kitchen

I’ll admit, there are some vacation destinations where cooking is absolutely not on my agenda. Any time we’re staying at least several nights, though, having the option of coming back to the room and fixing our own easy meals saves significantly on the overall cost of the trip. Especially if the kids are with us!

Save money traveling by getting a hotel with a kitchen. This is one way how to travel more for less money.#freetravel #travelforfree #budgettravel #familyvacation

Stay in a Hotel That Offers Free Breakfast and Free Dinner

Many hotels offer free breakfast, but did you know some also offer free dinners , too? It’s usually Monday – Thursday, and they may call it “evening appetizers”, but it’s usually plenty for dinner.

We stayed at Homewood Suites in Anaheim near Disneyland and took advantage of this each afternoon when we came back to let the kids rest for a bit. We’d nap, eat a quick free dinner and head back to the parks. Not only did it save money , but it saved quite a bit of time as well! Embassy Suites is another hotel that offers free breakfast and free dinner.

Staying at Homewood Suites is a great way to save money while traveling. Their free breakfast and free dinner make it easier to travel more for less money.

How Do You Save Money So You Can Travel More While Spending Less?

There are even more ways to travel free and to travel more for less money, but hopefully, this list gave you new ideas to get started.

Happy Travels!

10 Ways to Travel More and Pay Less

Travel is a great way to broaden your horizons, meet new people and get real-life education and experience. Let’s face it, sometimes it’s nice to escape every day life and experience something new. It’s a little miracle when you walk onto an airplane in snowy, cold weather and step off a few hours later in a land of sunshine and palm trees. And who doesn’t want more miracles in their life? Many people would like to travel more, but they’re limited by budget and time. Here are ten suggestions for how you can travel more, use less vacation days and pay less.

There are affiliate links in this post. If you make a qualifying purchase through one of these links, Wander Woman Travel Magazine may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Table of Contents

Travel More with Travel Points

If your grocery store offers a free travel rewards program, sign up. In Canada, Sobeys and Safeway stores use the Airmiles reward program . It’s completely free to sign up and you earn points that can help you travel more every time you shop for groceries and other items at participating stores. You might also consider getting a credit card that helps you earn travel points or dollars. If you make basic purchases on the points credit card and pay it off every month, you’ll get ahead. If you run a balance on the card, the interest charges will eliminate the benefits of the travel points. Pay off your credit cards and you’ll have more money to travel.

Sign up for Rewards Programs

If you’re staying at a hotel or flying with an airline that has a free rewards program, sign up. After a few hotel stays or flights, you might earn a free stay or flight. With some programs, points never expire. With other programs, you need to stay active in some way or your points expire. If you’re on top of it, you can keep your points active.

Start a Travel Fund

Start saving for your next trip. Whether it’s a special savings account or a piggy bank, saving regularly can help you travel more. Think about how you’re spending your money and figure out where you might reduce expenses. You can put the savings into your travel fund. How much do you spend each week at your favorite coffee shop? Even a few dollars each week can add up.

Escape for a Weekend

If you struggle to get time off work or other responsibilities, make use of long weekends. There’s a lot to explore right in your own backyard. Take a day trip and go for hike, explore a local attraction or try out a new restaurant. Take the whole weekend and enjoy an escape in the country or in another city. Be a tourist in your own backyard.

Visit Friends and Family

Visiting friends and family lets them know you care about them. It also saves money on accommodations and meals. Locals usually know the best restaurants and unique attractions to visit. They might also have inside knowledge for using public transportation. Be sure to take them out for a nice dinner, to a local attraction or leave a small gift to thank your friends and family for their hospitality.

Sign up for Deal Alerts from Travel Providers

Sign up for the e-newsletters from airlines, travel agencies and hotels. That way you’ll always know when there is a deal or a sale. Spending less lets you travel more.

Ever Heard of Bleisure Travel?

Combine the words “business” and “leisure,” you get “bleisure.” Combining business with leisure is a hot new travel trend. If you’re visiting a great destination for work, just add a few extra days before or after your business to explore and enjoy the destination. Bring someone special and they can enjoy the hotel while you’re working.

Volunteer or Work Abroad

If you want to travel for an extended period of time, look at work or volunteer opportunities in other destinations. Living in a destination is a great way to really experience local culture and challenge yourself by stepping outside your comfort zone. Many countries have agreements in place with select other countries that can make it easier for you to get a work visa.

Your Dream Destination on a Budget

Big ticket trips to far flung destinations can be expensive, but there are ways to reduce the costs. Check out our post about a self-drive safari in Namibia, Africa . Rates for a self-drive safari start at a fraction of the cost of a fully guided experience and we loved it. Consider an island hopping trip in the Galapagos Islands instead of a cruise. Island hopping is a less expensive way to experience this incredible destination. We loved that too. Whatever your dream trip is, take at look at options that might cost a little less. You might be able to get there sooner than you think.

Look for Free Things to Do

Look for free things to do in the destination you’re visiting. Some museums and attractions have times when they are open to the public for free. Download a free walking tour app instead of paying for a guided tour. We know whereof we speak. Check out our post 10 Free Things to do in Madrid .

How to Travel More and Pay Less: An Introduction

travel more pay less

  • You need to have a good credit score. I would say 700+ to be safe.
  • You need to be OK with temporary 30-50 point dips in your credit score. If this is your biggest fear, you need to GET OVER IT. I was holding 5-6 credit cards at the time I got approved for a mortgage with a low interest rate. In addition, increasing your credit limit but keeping your expenses the same (i.e. your credit utilization ratio) will contribute to an overall higher credit score.
  • You will need to earn the minimum individual or household income for the more premium travel cards. This is typically $60,000+ for individual and $100,000+ for household, however different banks have different requirements. American Express is typically the most lenient when it comes to individual/household income.
  • You need to have enough ORGANIC spending on credit cards that can meet the minimum purchase required for the welcome points. This is usually $1,000 to 1,500 in the first 3 months, and sometimes even higher depending on the card.
  • Since award availability fluctuates, your schedule and vacation timing needs to be flexible, and that goes for anyone traveling with you.
  • Most importantly, you need to be organized and pay your bills on time! Traveling is a luxury and you should not get into ANY credit card debt because of it. Oftentimes one card isn't enough to achieve your flight or hotel goal, so you will have to be able to manage tracking and paying off multiple cards. I do not recommend churning if you are not able to pay your bills on time.

Our Travel Moments

It's all about the adventure, 5 tips to make travel affordable — travel more, pay less.

travel more pay less

Would you love to travel more but just don’t know how to pay for it?  5 Tips to Make Travel Affordable — Travel More, Pay Less, will outline things you can do right now to make travel happen.  It will take a little bit of work, but the effort you put in will be worth it.  As a consultant, it was easy to rack up frequent flyer and hotel points.  Since I got off the road, I needed to come up with more creative ways to continue to travel.  These 5 tips to make travel affordable made all the difference for us, especially since it increased our ability to travel more cost effectively.  It’s all in the planning.

Tip #1 — Plan Ahead

In order to plan successfully, first decide where you want to go.  We plan 3 major trips and 15 mini trips per year.  For our major trips, we start planning those a minimum of 6 months in advance, especially since we tend to go places like Hawaii or Mexico.  At the same time, look at where you want to stay and activities you want to participate in during your stay.  This will give you the opportunity to find the best way to get your flight, your hotel, and your activities at much more affordable rates.  A little planning goes a long way to save money and make travel more affordable.

Tip #2 — Hotels & Airfare Rewards Make Travel Affordable

How would you like to get free or almost free hotels and airfare?  Silly question right?  Let me give you a little hint, use your monthly bills.  You already pay monthly bills, why not use those to earn airfare and hotel stays.  The key is to find the right credit card and use it to pay your monthly bills.  There are a lot of different types of rewards cards out there.  The trick is to find the ones that will meet your travel needs.

Airline Rewards Card

I looked at a lot of different rewards cards only to find that they didn’t produce enough points to fit my travel needs.  My next step was to focus directly on the airlines I booked most often.  Airline rewards cards tend to offer anywhere from 40,000 – 85,000 miles.  All you need to do is spend a certain dollar amount on the card in a specific time.  Most times, it is $1,000 – 3,000 in a 3 month period.  That’s why I say use your monthly bills!  For us, it was easy to meet this criteria.  A word of caution, make sure to pay it off at the end of every month.  Carrying a balance is going to defeat the purpose.  The goal is to rack up miles, not more bills!  Also, be sure to read the fine print because not all airline cards are equal.  Here is a great link to learn more about the different kinds of reward cards www.airfarewatchdog.com

Perks & Drawbacks

First thing I did was evaluate the perks and drawbacks of each card.  Look for things that are important to you when traveling.  The most important perks for me are:

  • free checked bags;
  • club room options;
  • offset annual fees; and
  • priority boarding.

Annual fees can really be a drawback if the airline doesn’t offer a perk to offset it.  As an example, United charges an annual fee of $95 but they offer two complimentary club room passes per year.  It is well worth the cost because sometimes we have long layovers and club room passes are a great perk.  The club room has complimentary papers, food and beverages plus very comfortable seating.  If you don’t have the passes, club rooms can cost upwards of $50 per person if they even let you buy a day pass.  If the drawbacks outweigh the perks, keep looking you will find what works for you.

Hotel choices are endless so we narrowed the field to ones that are favorites.  Once again, they will offer hotel points for dollars spent in a specific time.  Here I watch closely because sometimes the amount of points will vary depending on the promotion.  The nice thing about hotel credit cards, they rarely have an annual fee.  Make sure to review all the perks and drawbacks before signing up.  Hotels tend to give better perks to travelers with higher status.  If you don’t spend your life in hotels, reaching those status levels will be tough.  So I look for hotel cards that give me instant status.  As an example, we just stayed at a Holiday Inn in Portland and received welcome points, access to the club room, early check-in and drink coupons.  All that just for being a IHG Platinum Elite — oh, by the way, we were staying on points.  Most cards will offer a free night on your card anniversary which is a nice perk.

Tip #3 — Transportation Options Make Travel Affordable

Once you land at your destination, you need to be able to get around.  Sometimes you can get good deals on rental cars but there are a lot of restrictions.  Before you go check out public transportation.  Bigger cities tend to have very good options to move people around.  We love the light rail in both Seattle and Portland for getting around.  Plus, you don’t get caught in all the crazy traffic.  I prefer to see the sights rather than sit on a freeway.  The cost for a two day pass, is significantly cheaper than renting a car.  We do have frequent renter cards for the all car options but find that they don’t add up very quickly.  These are not credit cards, just frequent renter cards.  If you don’t like public transportation, renting a car may be beneficial for you.  Be sure to look for coupons, discounts and those kind of things to try to reduce the cost.  I found that Groupon  will sometimes have deals.  Another thing to check out is whether or not the hotel shuttle will take you where you need to go.

Tip #4 — Shop Around

When you plan ahead like we do, it gives you a chance to shop around for the best deals.  If you want to use airline miles to gain free airfare, you need to book pretty far in advance as they have limited “free” seats.   There are a lot of ways you can be informed about great deals.  One of the best ways is to subscribe to apps that will alert you to discounted travel.  Sometimes it just doesn’t make sense to use miles when I can purchase tickets cheaper.  Save the points for the trips like Hawaii because the ticket cost is so high.  I subscribe to Airfarewatchdog and Hopper  because they watch airfare costs and alert me when they have a good deal.  Once you have the hotel and airline cards, you will get plenty of notifications about sales, discounts and additional ways to earn free nights.  If you find yourself short a few points or miles, it is cheaper to purchase additional points.  They also run specials on those as well.  Check out Groupon because they will have deals as well.

Tip #5 — Outside the Box

We have a timeshare and sometimes it works well, however I don’t recommend getting caught up in one.  The maintenance fees are often more than if you planned and paid for the vacation outright.  What they are good for, is leverage to trade for a location that you may want to go.  We let ours roll over into RCI and then book a vacation wherever we are going that year.  They tend to have more options and the points go farther.  Another good way to save money is to stay out of the commercial sites.  Check out Airbnb and HomeAway for rentals that will give you more for your money.  One thing you can try to do is find a location and then check into house sitting.  I know it sounds crazy but there are a lot of people who own homes in exotic areas and need someone to watch their home while they are gone.  Think outside the box when looking for travel deals, you never know what you will find.

Final Thoughts – 5 Tips to Make Travel Affordable

I’ve spent quite a bit of time trying to find ways to be able to travel.  The 5 tips to make travel affordable are some of the things that I do regularly.  Last year we went to Hawaii for a week, stayed at a hotel close to the beach, went all over the island, did several activities all for less than $500 per person.  If we would have had to pay outright for everything it would have easily been at least $1500 per person.  Our upcoming trips to Birch Bay, WA; Palm Springs, CA; and Puerto Vallarta are all on hotel points and airline miles.  It can be done with planning, preparation and creativity! Be sure to  SUBSCRIBE to my YouTube Channel  to keep up-to-date on our adventures.

The FTSE 100 has ended a long wait to achieve a new record high.

The index, which comprises the 100 most valuable companies on the London Stock Exchange, closed Monday's session on 8,023 points after a jump of 128 points or 1.6%.

That was the highest closing sum since February last year when the 8,000 barrier was breached for the first time in its history.

The previous record stood at 8,012.

The performance today was driven by a strong showing for companies across the board, particularly financial and consumer-linked stocks such as those for retailers.

The index has been gaining ground in recent weeks on growing hopes for a cut in UK interest rates as inflation eases - with strong evidence that the economy has turned a corner after the recession during the second half of last year.

Analysts credited the push for a new high on two main factors; confidence that a major escalation in the Middle East conflict will be avoided and a weakening in the value of the pound against the US dollar.

Sterling is trading at five-month lows against the greenback at just $1.23 and was half a cent down on the day.

This is a consequence of dollar strength as opposed to pound weakness as expectations are growing across the Atlantic that the Federal Reserve's expected interest rate cuts are further down the track than had been predicted.

Higher interest rates tend to be supportive of a currency which, in this case, is the world's reserve currency.

A weaker pound helps FTSE 100 constituent companies which make money in the United States.

That is because it boosts their bottom line when those dollar earnings are booked back in the UK and converted back to pounds.

The typical price of a property coming on the market across Britain increased by £4,207 month-on-month in April, according to Rightmove.

The property website said a jump in new sellers and the sales of bigger family-sized homes are a key factor behind the growth.

It means the average price tag for a home is only £570 short of the record-high reached in May 2023.

The average new seller asking price across Britain is now £372,324.

This month, the average asking price for a "top of the ladder" home is £682,661, up by more than £18,000 from £664,422 in March.

The first four months of 2024 have been an improvement on last year, the website said, with the market witnessing boosts in both buyer and seller activity this spring.

First-time buyers are facing the most expensive conditions for more than 70 years, according to a report by the Building Societies Association.

The report said taking the first step on the property ladder is increasingly dependent on help from relatives and the need to have two incomes that are higher than the average.

Written by housing market analyst Neal Hudson, the report calls on the government to commission an independent review with the aim of providing solutions that increase the number of true non-returner first-time buyers, both now and in the future.

Mr Hudson also says building societies need more flexibility to help them to support more first-time buyers.

Tesla - owned by billionaire Elon Musk - has cut the price of some of its electric car models after reporting a fall in sales.

The revamped Model 3 car fell by 14,000 yuan (£1,500) in China, putting the price tag at just under £26,000 for the car that upgrades the interior and exterior styling of the original 2017 model.

It comes as Tesla grapples with competition from China, the world's largest automobile market, which is rolling out cheaper electric car models.

"Tesla prices must change frequently in order to match production with demand," Musk posted on X this weekend.

There have also been price cuts in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, a Tesla spokesperson said.

In Germany, the price of the Model 3 rear-wheel-drive is now showing as €40,990 (£35,357), down from €42,990 (£37,000), where the price had been since February.

It follows cuts in the US of the Model Y, Model X, Model S and the full self-driving driver assistant software.

Earlier, this month, the company reported a decline in its global quarterly deliveries for the first time in nearly four years.

Musk also announced that more than 10% of the company's global workforce will be laid off as it braces for its first annual drop in deliveries.

A council that oversees many popular tourist towns on the Kent coast has said it is considering implementing a tourism tax as a way of maximising income from visitors.

A new report by Thanet District Council - which includes the towns of Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate - highlights the negative impact of tourism in the area and puts forward a number of recommendations to help with this.

One of those recommendations is levying what it calls a "modest tourism tax" on those staying overnight.

The report also proposes levying additional council tax on second homes that may be being rented out as short-term holiday lets.

Justifying the recommendations, the report says: "We want a booming visitor economy but we are acutely aware of the additional costs visitors bring, so we need to make every effort to secure income for the council to set against those costs."

Conservative district councillor John Davis welcomed the proposed changes during a meeting of the overview and scrutiny panel on 16 April.

"It's an important initiative," he said.

"I would like to welcome costs on Airbnbs and the like, because in Ramsgate we have 866 homes for short-term let and 21 flats.

"This is absolutely obscene."

Thanet has seen the biggest growth of tourism enterprises over the last five years.

According to 2024 analysis by Kent County Council , 4.4% of these enterprises are accommodation for visitors.

Train drivers who are members of the Aslef union at 16 companies have announced fresh strike dates as part of their long-running dispute over pay.

Drivers at different companies will walk out on various dates between 7 May and 9 May.

They will also refuse to work non-contractual overtime from 6 May to 11 May.

NatWest, Barclays, Accord, Leeds Building Society and HSBC have all announced rate increases today - amid concern interest rates may not fall as much as expected this year.

Swap rates - which dictate how much it costs lenders to lend - have increased in the past week after US inflation came in higher than expected. Economists are divided about what this means for UK interest rates - with some pointing out that the UK economy is struggling far more, and therefore cuts are still imminent.

The London Stock Exchange Group is still pricing in a June cut and two further cuts before the end of the year. Analysts at Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs Group, Capital Economics and Bloomberg Economics all concur.

However, some economists have suggested we may have to wait until November for a first cut from the 16-year high of 5.25%.

Lenders, it seems, are growing more cautious.

Responding to today's hikes, Elliott Culley, director at Switch Mortgage Finance, told Newspage: "The rate rollercoaster rolls on.

"Just when the market appears to be picking up some momentum, there is a sharp change of direction.

"We are now seeing the spike in swap rates last week filtering through to the public as lenders raise their rates in response.

"The volatility we are experiencing currently really amplifies how important it is to secure a rate as soon as possible, as this could save you hundreds of pounds, especially for existing homeowners."

Simon Bridgland, broker/director at Release Freedom, added: "This morning, I have been calling clients who have been sitting on the fence urging them to proceed as this increase is potentially going to be with us for several months.

"Inaction will weigh heavily on household purses so don't delay, there is a finite amount of hours left to get deals done before the increases take effect, pick up the phone to your broker immediately or you will be paying more money for years to come."

The UK's biggest water company has put forward an investment offer that could increase customer bills even more than the 40% rise it already requested.

Thames Water, which serves 16 million customers in the south of England, has suggested an additional £19 a year bill increase on top of its plan for bill payers to be  charged 40% more .

The optional extra increase could fund £1.9bn in environmental protection investment, Thames Water said, if approved by regulator Ofwat.

Under the utility's proposed business plan, for the five years to 2030 bills will rise to £608 a year - a 40% rise.

The average bill is currently £432.60 a year.

But if the extra investment takes place customers will have to pay 44% more instead - £627 a year by 2030.

An investment of £18.7bn had already been proposed but under revised plans, an extra £1.1bn has been offered to go into "projects benefiting the environment", Thames Water said.

Regulatory approval is required for the plans and Ofwat is due to publish its draft view on 12 June.

Despite the retaliatory strikes between Israel and Iran, the oil price has fallen to $86, down from the $91 dollar highs seen earlier this month.

A barrel of the benchmark Brent crude oil now costs $86.41, down from $88 on Friday.

It's a good day for the hundred most valuable companies that make up the Financial Times Stock Exchange (FTSE) 100.

The index is up 1.31%, led by grocers Ocado, Sainsbury's and Marks and Spencer.

It's also a big day for Asda as it reported profits rose 23%. As the company is privately owned, its share price is not tracked on the London Stock Exchange.

The larger FTSE 250 index is also up, just a smaller 0.87%.

A pound buys $1.2359 and €1.1591.
