My goal is to give you a list of the best and most popular travel social work companies I have come across and some tips on how to become a travel social worker.

What is travel social work?

Travel social work involves social workers taking on temporary assignments in various locations, often to fill staffing shortages or address specific community needs. These assignments typically last for a minimum of 13 weeks and can extend past that if there is still a need for extra help.

The most common travel assignment is at a hospital, but you may be able to find some assignments at schools or behavioral health centers.

Travel assignments often come with competitive compensation packages, including higher pay rates, housing stipends, and travel allowances, which can provide financial stability and flexibility!

15 Popular Travel Social Work Companies

These are in no particular order! I curated this list by exploring various travel social work resources, groups, forums, and websites.

1. GHR Healthcare (merged with Meelo)

2. aya healthcare, 3. brundage group, 4. medovent solutions, 5. amn healthcare, 6. magellan health.

9. GreenKey Resources

11. Maxim Staffing

12. cynet health.

14. Marshall Healthcare

15. lrs healthcare, 16. adn healthcare, 17. totalmed, 18. genie healthcare, how to become a travel social worker.

While I try to give you some helpful info below on how to get started, it is not comprehensive. There is so much to travel social work and I am just scratching the surface with the info in this post.

I highly recommend this book that goes into everything you need to know about travel social work from what documents to prepare for traveling to showing you example contracts.

Money to Prepare to Travel

Having at least 3-6 months in savings before starting your travel contract is strongly recommended. Many agencies will require you to pay upfront for things like airfare and lodging, and you won’t get reimbursed until your first paycheck.

You’ll also need money to afford other things like food and miscellaneous items until you get your first check!

You might also be counting on a certain assignment that ends up getting canceled — in this case, your emergency savings will support you while you work on landing your next assignment.

Assignments and Experience

There are travel assignments all over the country.

The MOST popular travel assignment type is discharge case management in a hospital. Those who have traveled recommend getting 1-2 years of experience doing in-patient case management before traveling.

This experience before traveling is highly recommended because travelers often get limited training and are thrown into the work quickly. You will need to have a good base of knowledge and confidence in yourself to handle this work.

You may also be able to find assignments for schools and behavioral health hospitals, but these are more rare.

When you find an assignment you think would be a good fit, apply! You will then be matched with a recruiter to help you through the process.

Sometimes people get recommendations for awesome recruiters, so if this happens to you, you can just reach out to them directly.

Clinical or Non-clinical License?

There are contracts where you may need a license and some where you may not. Of course, you have more negotiating power when you are licensed, but it is not always necessary. Some agencies will help you with the process of getting the licensure needed for a state or reimburse you if you already started the process.

The assignments where you don’t need a clinical license tend to go quickly, so you have to jump on those opportunities if you’re not interested and/or don’t have the ability to get licensed.

Contract Agreements and Benefits

It is important to understand the terms and conditions of the contracts, including assignment duration, cancellation policies, renewal options, and most importantly, your pay and benefits!

Absolutely ask questions and don’t sign anything you’re not comfortable with!

Things that will likely be included in your contract (and most you can negotiate):

  • Sign-on bonus
  • Hourly rate
  • Housing/meal stipend
  • Completion bonus (e.g. if you stay 13 weeks you will be given $2,000)
  • Weekly gas reimbursement
  • Licensure reimbursement
  • Increase your rate if you extend a contract

Other benefits agencies may offer:

  • Retirement benefits
  • PTO/sick days

Compensation

On top of your hourly rate you will receive a stipend for housing and meals/incidentals.

To find the stipend/per diem rates for the city and state you want to travel in, check out the General Service Administration site.

The stipend you receive is typically where people are able to maximize their income by finding lodging that is cheaper than the amount you receive for your stipend. This stipend is not taxed.

Some travel agencies provide insurance but this can be tricky if you don’t stay with that company for multiple contracts. When your assignment ends, your insurance ends.

If you don’t want to worry about the headache of getting insurance through the company providing your contract, you can get your own insurance.

A few options include:

  • Marketplace plan
  • Getting on a spouse’s insurance
  • Private insurance plan

Agencies will sometimes pay for your hotel/lodging, but then you won’t get money for a housing stipend. Sometimes this can be helpful if you are overwhelmed with finding housing.

Some other places to consider for housing:

  • Hotels — many people like hotels because you don’t need a security deposit and they can be all around more convenient than working with a landlord. If you plan on being there for an extended period of time, inquire if you can receive a discounted rate.
  • Extended stay hotels
  • Furnished Finder — Like it sounds, these housing options are furnished. This platform was first developed for travel nurses and now is widely used by many healthcare professionals, non-healthcare professionals, and students.

There are a lot of scammers out there, so be careful! Some travelers like to stay in a hotel for the first few days they get there so they can see these longer term rental places in person.

Personal Considerations

Pursuing a career in travel social work offers the opportunity to experience other work settings and travel to states you may not have otherwise seen.

This process can be very overwhelming, but just remember you will gain a lot of first-hand knowledge with every contract you take. You may not know everything now, but you will get more comfortable knowing what to look/ask for as you grow to become a seasoned traveler.

You may also find that this venture is not for you — that’s okay, too!

Good luck out there!

What’s it like being a Travel Social Worker?

We talk a lot about our travel nurses but did you know AB Staffing also places travel social workers? We sat down with Jennifer to discuss what her experience has been like working with Indian Health Services as a Clinical Social Worker in Northern Arizona, Montana, and Minnesota. She admits there are pros and cons, but that overall it has been a good experience. She has been able to utilize her education, expand her skills, impact community, and experience new cultures.

Like so many of our medical professionals, the timing was right for Jennifer to take a contract as a travel social worker.

“My husband had lost his job and the position I had at the time was not going to cover all of our expenses. Just after I had gotten my license in the state of Arizona, a recruiter reached out and the opportunity presented was a great fit for our family. I never thought about traveling but now realize I travel to learn things I didn’t know I needed to know.”

Since that time, Jennifer has begun working with AB Staffing recruiter, Norma, who placed her in a contract with Indian Health Services in Northern Arizona.

Not only has Jennifer been able to provide for her family and travel to new places, she was able to put her social work skills and experience into action.

“I have worked in social services for 10 years with experience in schools, mental health, medical, long-term care, home health, crisis, and as a first responder in a fire department. I have a Master’s Degree in Social Work and am currently a Doctor of Social Work candidate. My dissertation focuses on non-tribal clinician’s ethical decision making processes and clinical practices when working with Indigenous populations. I also create 5-minute podcasts about traveling, have hosted a twitter chat for #MacroSW, and am currently writing a feature for the New Social Worker Magazine.”

Jennifer is working at an IHS facility in Montana. While the area is somewhat rural, she says it isn’t as remote as her contract in Northern Arizona.

“We are currently doing summer programming that has a lot of flexibility. We are provided tools and serve the community all summer so that when school is in session, we have already built a rapport with the people.”

The flexibility of working in behavioral settings is what she likes most because there is always an opportunity to learn, grow, and observe. What she likes least is that the weather is heating up and her current home doesn’t have air conditioning.

We asked what advice she would give to social workers considering travel contracts and she said,

“Be flexible. Never assume you know everything. Be open to learning. Travel social workers who are successful are able to work independently, and are highly motivated, and charismatic to a degree.”

If you’re considering working with Indian Health Services, Jennifer offers this advice,

“Similar to accepting a general travel social worker contract, working with IHS is hard work. I recommend not taking work home. It is better to give yourself breaks. Go on adventures. Pick up a new hobby. Stay active. Don’t rely on a standard routine.”

Like so many of our travel medical professionals, Jennifer loves to enjoy the outdoors.

“As a graduate student, I need to find a balance between travel social work jobs , school work, and self-care. I have started hiking in national, state, and provincial parks. Over the Fourth of July weekend, I drove to Calgary and then spent a day in Canmore and Banff. Alberta, Canada is a beautiful place. I highly recommend taking adventures and seeing new places while on assignment.”

She loves the opportunities and experiences of being a travel social worker. Thank you, Jennifer, for sharing your experience with us!

It’s interesting to know that a social worker will have experience working with schools, long-term care facilities, and other various departments. I want to be a social worker someday so that I can help people with their problems. If I were to choose, I’ll go to a licensing service once I’m ready so that I can become one.

I’m definitely considering in becoming a traveling social worker next year. I just don’t know how or where to start from to take that initiative. This is great information thus far.

Metalation of metal–organic frameworks: fundamentals and applications.

Metalation of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) has been developed as a prominent strategy for materials functionalization for pore chemistry modulation and property optimization. By introducing exotic metal ions/complexes/nanoparticles onto/into the parent framework, many metallized MOFs have exhibited significantly improved performance in a wide range of applications. In this review, we focus on the research progress in the metalation of metal–organic frameworks during the last five years, spanning the design principles, synthetic strategies, and potential applications. Based on the crystal engineering principles, a minor change in the MOF composition through metalation would lead to leveraged variation of properties. This review starts from the general strategies established for the incorporation of metal species within MOFs, followed by the design principles to graft the desired functionality while maintaining the porosity of frameworks. Facile metalation has contributed a great number of bespoke materials with excellent performance, and we summarize their applications in gas adsorption and separation, heterogeneous catalysis, detection and sensing, and energy storage and conversion. The underlying mechanisms are also investigated by state-of-the-art techniques and analyzed for gaining insight into the structure–property relationships, which would in turn facilitate the further development of design principles. Finally, the current challenges and opportunities in MOF metalation have been discussed, and the promising future directions for customizing the next-generation advanced materials have been outlined as well.

‘Conan O’Brien Must Go’ Is a Keeper: TV Review

Legendary talk show host and hot wing evangelist returns to television with hilarious new Max travel show

Conan O'Brien tries Thai boxing with predictable results.

The key to understanding Conan O’Brien’s comedy is knowing that it comes from a point of kindness. Yes, I know in this age of comics punching down , this kind of compliment may leave you with a neon “Must Avoid!” sign flashing in your bleary eyes — but stay with me.

Popular on Variety

Conan’s three-decade run as a talk show host ended in 2021 under less-than-optimal circumstances , as he wound down his TBS show during the pandemic year. He talked to longtime sidekick Andy Richter , who sat among dozens of cardboard cutout fans. O’Brien quipped that they were last in line for the vaccine because the CDC had looked at the shows and “they said ours is the least essential of pretty much all the non-essential shows.”

There was some truth in that, but Conan had already started his move to other outlets , starting with his “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast in 2018.

The podcast is funny and sweet, especially the pre-interview segments with longtime associate Sona Movsesian and producer Matt Gourley. Conan mocks Sona’s legendarily bad work habits. and Gourley’s flea market predilections, but any kind of comedic acid is reserved for the self-lacerating O’Brien. (On a recent episode, Conan runs down his own looks, and it is cruel and hilarious, but part of me is thinking, “Dude, cut yourself a break.”). The only time things get contentious is when Conan visited by longtime friend Kevin Nealon — perhaps the podcast’s best episodes.

The podcast had an offshoot called “Conan O’Brien Needs a Fan,” on which O’Brien would talk to a fan, often in a faraway land. That led to O’Brien traveling to Norway, Thailand, Ireland and Argentina to meet them. Why? Well, a dour and ominous narrator, aka Werner Herzog, offered this rationale at the beginning of each episode: “Once a proud talk show host, he’s been driven by a changing ecosystem to a drier and harsher climate: the weekly podcast. Here , without the nourishment of his studio audience, this clown with dull , tiny eyes, the eye of a crudely painted doll , is forced to feed on that meagerest of morsels: the random call-in fan. Unhinged by the feral scent of their mild enthusiasm. He scavenges in distant lands uninvited, fueled by a bottomless hunger for recognition , and the occasional selfie.”

It’s a self-deprecating bit, but it’s also the truth. Conan has been doing travel shows for years, most notably one to Movsesian’s native Armenia , as well as a chaotic trip to Finland where O’Brien is treated as a god because of his physical resemblance to the Finnish president who happens to be a woman. He clearly loves the journey. And he loves the comedy set piece–see his classic “Old Timey Baseball” opus — which has always been an essential part of his appeal.

The encounters work because O’Brien doesn’t treat his new friends as fools — rather , he revels in the fact that he is the fool. (See his instant-classic appearance on “Hot Ones,” the show where interviews are conducted while the celebrity consumes increasingly acidic chicken wings. Conan rhapsodizes on comedy being all around us as green-yellow mucus drips down his nose.) Of course, there are exceptions made for old friends. Conan goes out for asada in Buenos Aires with the effete and erudite Jordan Schlansky, a longtime producer and frenemy. Schlansky and Conan are the Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon of American cable , and on his TBS show and podcast the two have tangled over Japanese customs, Conan hosting Schlansky’s bachelor party in his own office, and Schlansky hiding an expensive Espresso machine in an inaccessible part of their offices. (As with the Courtney Thorne-Smith segment, Conan’s visceral malice toward Schlansky works because it is so out-of-character).

During the Argentina episode, they get into a fierce argument about the proper pronunciation of the word “tango,” Conan then licks Schlansky’s favorite cut of meat — wait, that came out wrong. After, they go on an ill-fated trip to the Pampas, where both fail spectacularly at gaucho life.

Not everything works. O’Brien does a self-referential bit about the expensive drone he is using on the first show , and for the next four episodes I am distracted every time I see a beautiful shot thinking about the drone’s specifications and capabilities. Some of the stuff goes on a bit long, but so does my writing.

These are minor quibbles. If you’re a Conan fan, you’ll treasure the trips, just like his completists treasure encounters with a masturbating bear. The series ends with Conan tracing his family’s roots in Ireland. He comes across his ancestor’s land, makes a few jokes, but then looks at the land, clearly moved. Conan O’Brien has played the fool long enough; we grant him this moment of humanity with all our hearts.

All four episodes of “Conan O’Brien Must Go” are now available on Max.

Focus Staff Travel Social Work Agency

Focus Staff travel social work agency prioritizes quality over quantity when it comes to its contract offerings.

Most of their assignments pay well, and they offer a robust set of benefits. However, you should keep in mind that they only list travel contracts for LCSWs.

So, if you’re an LCSW, let’s explore the upsides and downsides of working with this company. This way, you can learn if travel social work with Focus Staff may be right for you!

Table of Contents

Why choose travel social work with focus staff, 1. high-paying job opportunities, 2. great benefits, 3. tax-free reimbursements, 4. quick application, cons of travel social work with focus staff, focus staff travel social work agency reviews, is focus staff travel social work agency right for you, explore travel social work opportunities.

Focus Staff travel social work agency stands out for its commitment to offering high-paying job opportunities. With most positions offering salaries exceeding $2,000 per week, this company positions itself as a leading provider of lucrative travel social work assignments.

Furthermore, their comprehensive benefits package, including immediate health insurance coverage and a 401k plan, highlights their dedication to the well-being of their employees.

The convenience of tax-free reimbursements for travel and licensing costs adds an additional layer of support for social workers transitioning to new states, making the logistical aspects of moving less burdensome.

Moreover, Focus Staff’s streamlined application process reflects their understanding of the busy lives of social workers, offering a quick and efficient way to connect with potential job opportunities.

Despite the challenge of a limited number of job openings, Focus Staff’s regular updates and specialized focus ensure quality over quantity. Overall, this provides a tailored and supportive experience for Licensed Clinical Social Workers looking to travel.

Pros of Travel Social Work With Focus Staff

One great aspect of working with Focus Staff travel social work agency is that they offer a number of high-paying contracts. In fact, most of the gigs currently listed on their job board pay over $2,000 per week as of this writing.

The highest-paying opportunity was for an LCSW travel social worker in Worthington, MN and pays $2,739. We also found other contracts paying $2,635 and $2,506 in Spokane, WA and New Haven, CT, respectively.

While there are a few lower-paying jobs, like in Jackson, MI for $1,173 and Austin, TX for $1,853, the majority of contracts pay between $2,000 and $3,000.

Another nice thing about working with Focus Staff is that they offer a host of great benefits.

Most notably, they provide medical, dental, and vision insurance through Blue Cross Blue Shield. According to the agency’s website , BCBS is one of the biggest health insurance networks available in the nation.

Better yet, insurance coverage begins the day you start your assignment. However, we should note that you lose benefits at the end of your contract if you don’t start your next contract within two weeks of the previous one ending.

Focus Staff also offers a 401k once you complete 90 days of employment. They “match 100% on the first 3% deferred, and 50% on the remaining 4% deferred.”

Finally, this travel social work agency will help you find housing. While they don’t explicitly state if this is through their own housing or reimbursement, they do note that you’ll have lots of accommodation options when you work with them.

Focus Staff will reimburse you for your travel expenses to get to your assignment, including car travel and airfare.

Additionally, since social work licensing is done through each state independently, you’ll need to obtain state-specific licensure before you can begin working in a new state. This means you may need to complete additional requirements, and you’ll incur costs to obtain your new license.

Fortunately, this agency will reimburse you for the costs associated with your new state social work licensure.

The company also makes special note of other tax-free reimbursements, so be sure to ask your recruiter about other ways you can save.

Finally, if you don’t feel like taking the time to fill out a full application, you can opt to complete Focus Staff’s Quick Application .

You can finish the quick application in just a minute or two, unlike the full application requiring your work history, resume, and references.

This way, you can get in touch with the company to see if you may be a good fit, saving you the hassle of filling out an entire application for potentially nothing.

Once you fill out the quick application, Focus will also ask you to complete a quick skills self-evaluation . This should only take a few minutes, and will give the recruiters a good feel for your skillset. This will help you and the agency determine if you may be a candidate for any of their job openings.

The biggest downside we found to working with Focus Staff travel social work agency is the lack of job openings. In fact, as of this writing, there were only 11 jobs across 9 states.

While this is more travel social work listings than some other companies, there are certainly a few bigger agencies with more opportunities.

However, it’s worth noting that the company does update the listings regularly. For example, when we sat down to write this article two days ago, there were only 10 listings. This means they added at least one new contract opportunity in the last two days.

Additionally, Focus Staff only has listings for Licensed Clinical Social Workers. Depending on your licensure and experience level, this may mean you won’t find any contracts you qualify for. To be fair though, the bulk of travel social work assignments are for LCSWs, which is why we recommend you pursue this level of licensure if you want to travel.

Unfortunately, we were unable to find any reviews specifically from social workers for this agency. However, we did find reviews of other traveling professionals, like travel nurses.

One travel RN on Indeed rated the agency five stars, saying:

“Highly recommend Focus Staff. Every agency has hiccups, and their downsides. But my recruiter was honest, communicative and respectful whenever I interacted with her and I cannot say that for every agency. They’re on my list to accept assignments with if offered.” -Travel RN from New York, NY (September 3, 2023)

Another travel nurse on Indeed wrote:

“I use focus staff as my agency for travel nursing, my recruiter is GREAT! on top of everything and everyone who covered her were just as amazing and helpful. Would recommend them to anyone!!” -Travel RN from Connecticut (May 12, 2023)

If you’re an LCSW looking for high-paying travel social work assignments, Focus Staff may be right for you.

With an array of day one benefits and tax-free reimbursements for travel and licensure, this agency provides a limited number of high-quality opportunities..

The streamlined application process and the specific focus on LCSWs showcase an agency tailored for professionals seeking efficiency and relevance in their job search.

However, the limited number of job openings highlights the importance of timing and flexibility in securing a position.

Remember, it’s always a good idea to explore your options so you can find the most fulfilling assignments possible.

If you’re looking to find the right travel social work opportunity for you, fill out this form and we’ll help you get started!
