First Things First: Greetings To Use On Arrival

Knowing how to greet people is the most basic thing you can learn in a foreign language. And yet its importance shouldn't be underestimated.

Even if you aren’t fluent enough to hold a long conversation, a simple ¡Hola! ¿Qué tal?  (Hello, how are you?) can make all the difference.

You'll be able to use these expressions as soon as you arrive at your destination, whether it's at the airport, the train or bus station, or the hotel.

People appreciate it if you make an effort to speak their language when you visit their country, even if it’s only a few words.

Spanish-speaking countries are especially polite and greeting people correctly will go a long way towards endearing you to the locals, be they friends, people you meet in shops or on the street.

  • ( BWAY-nos DEE-as)
  • (BWAY-nas TAR-des)
  • (BWAY-nas NOH-chays)
  • (KOH-moh eh-STAH)
  • (KOH-moh eh-STAHS)
  • (bee-EN  GRA-thee-as [Spain] / GRA-see-as [Latin America])
  • (KOH-moh te YA-mas?)
  • (May YA-moh… )
  • (MOO-choh GOO-stoh)

And of course, let’s not forget common courtesy!

  • (por fa-BOR)
  • (GRA-thee-as [Spain] / GRA-see-as [Latin America])

If you get stuck in your Spanish conversation, you can always fall back on these next two phrases to get you out of trouble.

  • (yo no en-tee-EN-doh)
  • (Ab-la in-GLAYS)

Get What You Want On Your Trip With The Verb Querer

Once you’ve finished greeting someone, you’ll need to be able to move on to the crux of your conversation and to do that you’ll need to learn a couple of common verbs.

There are hundreds of Spanish verbs to learn and, to make your life more difficult, these verbs conjugate (change form).

This means learning a verb is never as simple as learning one word; you have to learn multiple different forms.

Having said that, you might be surprised by how far you can get only knowing one simple verb: I want .

It may not make you the most sophisticated Spanish speaker but 9 times out of 10 it will get you what you, well, want .

The verb in question is querer (to want) and in the first person form, it becomes quiero (I want).

Let’s take a look at how you can use it:

  • (yo kee-EH-ro oon me-NOO)
  • (YO kee-EH-ro oon taxi)
  • (yo kee-EH-ro OO-na ser-BAY-za)

If you’d like to be a bit more polite (which is usually a good idea), you can also use:

  • (kee-see-EH-ra…)

Asking For & Understanding Directions On Your Trip

Whether you’re looking for the toilet in a restaurant or trying to find a hotel to stay at, you’ll inevitably need to ask for directions at some point during your trip.

The simplest way to ask where something is, is to use ¿Dónde está? followed by the noun you are looking for:

  • (DON-day es-TAH el BAH-nyo?)
  • (DON-day es-TAH el BAN-koh?)
  • (DON-day es-TAH la KA-yay de al-cal-AH?)

When travelling in a foreign country, if you're asking someone on the street for directions, don’t forget your manners! To get someone’s attention, start by saying:

  • (Dis-KUL-pay)
  • (Con per-MEE-soh / Per-DOH-nah-may)
  • (eh- stoy per-DEE-doh)

Asking for directions is one thing but it’s pretty pointless if you don’t know how to understand the directions that are given to you!

Memorise these phrases to help you understand what the friendly locals are trying to tell you when you ask for their help:

  • (A la de-RE-cha)
  • (A la iz-kee-ER-da)
  • (De-RE-cho)
  • (En la es-KEE-nah)
  • (a OO-na KWAD-rah)

Getting Around Spanish-Speaking Countries

If you’re not keen on walking everywhere, you'll need to be able to find out about local transport options to find your way around wherever you are.

Here are a few simple phrases you can use to locate a bus, train or taxi and get to wherever you need to go:

  • (DON-day PWAY-doh en-kon-TRAR oon taxi?)
  • (DON-day eh-STAH la pa-RAH-dah de ow-to-BOOS mas ser-KA-nah?)
  • (DON-day eh-STAH la es-tah-see-ON de ferro-carr-EEL mas ser-KA-nah?)
  • (KWAN-to KWES-ta oon bee-YET-ay PA-ra …)
  • (oon bee-YET-ay PA-ra … por fa-BOR)

At A Restaurant On Your Travels

Each Spanish-speaking country has its own unique flavours and cuisine for you to try when you travel!

Food is definitely one of the big attractions to cities like San Sebastian in Spain and Buenos Aires in Argentina , so you'll need to make sure you have a basic grasp of food vocabulary ahead of your journey!

To start with, you need to be prepared to hear and understand certain questions in restaurants, such as:

  • (kee-EH-res AL-go PA-ra koh-MER?)
  • (kee-EH-res AL-go PA-ra beh-BER?)
  • (KAY kee-EH-res koh-MER?)

When you read the menu, you'll see the available food grouped into different categories, just like in an English menu:

  • (oo-na en-TRA-da)
  • (oon PLA-toh prin-si-PAL)
  • (oon POS-tray)
  • (OO-na beh-BEE-da)

When you're ready to order, use either  quiero (I want) or  quisiera (I would like) with the items on the menu to tell the waiter what you'd like. For example,  quiero…

  • (OO-na SOH-pah)
  • (OO-na en-sa-LA-da)
  • (el POY-oh)
  • (la CAR-nay)
  • (oon AG-wa)
  • (oon BEE-noh TIN-toh / BLAN-koh)
  • (OO-na ser-BAY-sa)
  • (oon ka-FAY)

So, for example, to order that ice-cold beer you're looking forward to at the end of a long day, you'd say  quiero una cerveza.

Spanish vocab pack

If you're not sure what to try, you can always ask your waiter for a recommendation:

  • (kay may re-kom-ee-EN-dah?)

In most restaurants in Spanish-speaking countries, the staff will be more than happy to suggest a particularly tasty local dish for you to try.

If you're a vegetarian or you have dietary complications, these next two phrases are essential:

  • (soy be-he-tah-ree-AH-noh/nah)
  • (TEN-go al-ER-hee-ah a las noo-EH-ses)

Finally, let's learn a couple of quick phrases you can use to ask about prices and pay the bill.

  • (KWAN-to KWES-ta? )
  • (la KWEN-ta por fa-BOR)

Key Spanish Question Words For Your Trip

Over the course of your journey, you'll almost certainly find yourself asking lots and lots of questions.

You might not have a huge Spanish vocabulary to draw on, but if you know the basic question words, you'll be able to get by in almost any common situation you might find yourself in.

Here are some key Spanish question words you need to know:

  • (KWAN-doh?)
  • (A kay AW-ra?)
  • (KWAN-toh?)
  • (KWAN-tohs)
  • (kah-dah KWAN-toh?)
  • (por KWAN-toh tee-EM-poh)

Once you’ve got these question words in your memory bank you’ll start noticing the patterns in Spanish grammar which will help you to move away from the basic Spanish phrases every tourist is using.

As you learn new words on your trip, you'll be able to combine them with these question words to start forming your own sentences and questions!

If you are going on vacation in Spain, Latin America or any Spanish-speaking country then you should know at least some Spanish for your trip. When traveling to these countries you will be immersed in Spanish as soon as you leave the touristic areas. Our course is designed to assist you with communicating with the local Spanish speaking population.

Traveler in Peru with children

Here are some advantages of learning travel Spanish.

  • You can communicate directly with the locals much more easily and it is much easier to make new friends when you can speak the local language.
  • Cost of items: When paying for an item or bartering you need to understand what a sales person is telling you or negotiate a price.
  • Counting: You can tell someone a quantity of goods or ask how many kilometers to the next town. This course will help you to use numbers in Spanish in a variety of situations.
  • Directions: Left or right at the corner? When traveling to new places you will invariably have to ask for directions and be able to understand them. So with travel Spanish this is also a large focus area during study. Up, down, around the corner, we cover all the basics.
  • Interpreting conversation: With our personal Spanish classes you get to practice with a native teacher honing your Spanish, so you can feel confident when you step off the plane!
  • Safety: Some areas of Latin American countries are not suitable for tourists, so when a local tells you "No vayas en esa dirección, ¡es peligroso!" you can understand what is being said to you ("Don't go in that direction; it's dangerous") and make an informed decision.
  • Our travel Spanish course option focuses less on the rules of grammar and more on the basics of what you need to know to make your vacation a memorable one.

Not everyone needs to have many classroom hours learning to spell in Spanish correctly when all they really want is to know enough to get by, travel Spanish is just that!

To put it in a nutshell our travel Spanish option gives you the language skills you need for your holiday without unnecessary grammar or irrelevant words to complicate matters. Our course is designed for absolute beginners to accommodate their needs quickly and easily. With our personal teachers you have a great source of information to answer all your questions, so you can get on with enjoying your vacation in Latin America.

Speak "Travel Spanish" From Day One--Without Learning any Grammar Rules, or Memorizing Hundreds of Words!

travel spanish class

HERE'S WHAT YOU GET INSIDE

Take a look at what you’ll learn and how it'll guarantee you'll be speaking real Spanish in time for your trip--without any grammar!

Have more fun. Be less stressed. Don't be just a normal tourist.

TRAVEL situation #1 asking directions

travel spanish class

Never be lost again! Learn how to ask directions to anywhere in the Spanish-speaking world with The 3 Questions --made of seven words. When you can ask directions, you'll waste less time being lost. Less time being stressed. And less time fighting with your travel partner. That's more time to see the stuff you went to see!

The 3 Questions just work. But if you want to keep going, there are additional lessons called Helpful Words #1 and Helpful Words #2 . The words and phrases in these videos will add to your asking direction powers, and help you get better directions, faster.

Things don't always go perfectly, so in the lesson called When Things Don't Go Perfectly , you'll see how to handle that. You can still get your directions, even if the other people don't play nicely.

In the video on this page, the example you saw was quite simple. But The 3 Questions work even when your destination is far away. In Looking for La Reina Sofia --you'll a more complex example. I start on side of Madrid, and want to go to the other side.

TRAVEL situation #2 transportation

travel spanish class

With just five simple steps, you can easily handle all public transportation: trains, buses, metros, trams, taxis and airports.

Do you want the fastest train? The cheapest bus? In Get Information , you'll see how to quickly ask questions to get what you want. Avoid annoying all the impatient people behind you because you have no idea what you're doing.

In Find Your Vehicle , you'll learn how to make sure you're on the right bus or metro car--and you're going the right direction. One simple question will do the trick.

When people first see the lesson called Get Off , they sometimes laugh. Get off? How hard can it be? Most of the time, not very. But on local buses (within a city) -- it's really pretty hard. There are no signs or announcements, and the stops usually aren't labeled. But don't you worry. There's are two ways to make sure you don't miss your spot. The easy way. And the guaranteed way.

TRAVEL situation #3 hotels & hostels

travel spanish class

Just get off the plane? Tired and hungry? In Check-In , learn the few words you'll need to calmly check-in, so you can go get some food or take a nap IMMEDIATELY.

Do you want the WI-FI password? An extra towel? What time is checkout? Learn to ask for all this and much more in Asking Basic Questions .

Know what you're getting! If you're looking for a hotel when you get there, wouldn't it be nice to make sure it's not nasty? With just one short question, you'll know EXACTLY what the room is like before you pay anything.

TRAVEL situation #4 ordering food

travel spanish class

Eat in better, more authentic restaurants where only the locals eat. Be the only tourist in the place.

With the Ingredient & Preparation Systems , you'll be able to try new foods. Know basically what you're ordering, and how it's going to be prepared. But with the Safety Questions , you'll be 100% certain you're not getting anything you can't or don't want to eat.

Don't be nervous!  See HOW bars, cafes and restaurants work before you go anywhere.  Don't waste the first half of your trip getting acclimated.

travel spanish class

The Travel Spanish Crash Course is 100% online.

You can access everything immediately.

There's nothing to wait for, and no software to download.

And you're not limited to one device.

Use your computer. Tablet. Phone. iOS. Android. Windows Phone. All of the above!

You can even download the videos to watch on the plane.

You can watch them offline, when you're in a foreign country.

Or in your home country, to save money on data.

You can watch the videos wherever you are, whenever you want.

travel spanish class

Anytime you have five minutes, you can make progress

The course is modular, organized, color-coded and easy to find what you're looking for.

You'll know exactly where to go, depending on what you want to learn.

Go in any order you want.

If you want to order food, go directly to the Ordering Food module.

Prefer to be told exactly what to do, in what order?

The 1-Week, 2-Week and 1-Month Action Plans do exactly that.

If you leave in one week--the 1-Week Action Plan tells you the best order (and schedule) to do things.

The average video length is five minutes.

So you can be using your new Spanish skills within minutes.

Even within a module, watch only the videos that'll help you.

If you're not looking for hotels as you travel, don't watch those videos (check-in and checkout are still helpful).

Learning Spanish doesn't have to be this daunting, scary thing.

You don't have to set aside hours at a time.

If you have a spare five minutes, you can make progress.

Watch one video.

As long as you have your phone (or any device), you can learn a new Spanish trick instead of wasting that time.

DON'T MISS OUT!

Special low price of only $47.

If you like my style--you'll love the Travel Spanish Crash Course.

If you don't. Well. You might not.

but Don't Take My Word For It...

travel spanish class

And that's just a small sample!

This is for you if....

  • You speak zero or little Spanish and are going to Spain or Latin America. This is perfect for you. It's made for you.
  • You took Spanish in high school or college, but forget most of it. This is a great refresher. Everything will come rushing back to you.
  • You're just getting started with Spanish, but aren't traveling anytime soon. You'll learn tons of words and phrases you can use in everyday life. Plus, these methods and tactics truly are the best way to get started.
  • You speak decent Spanish, but have never been to Spain. You'll see how everything works. Be more confident with your Spanish from the start. You won't waste the first few days getting comfortable.

This is not for you if...

  • You already know Spanish AND Spain pretty well.
  • You have to pass some kind of exam or test. Don't count on this for that.

free, extra module #1: five bonus situations

travel spanish class

Buy a SIM Card -- Get a local SIM card for your phone. Use the internet. Navigate. Find good restaurants. Without buying an international SIM or paying expensive international roaming charges!

The Pharmacy -- Tell the doctor or pharmacist what's wrong or what medicine you want. Don't sit in your hotel room sick, when just a couple words will get you what you need.

Postcards & Stamps -- Your family and friends back home will appreciate a postcard. See how and where to get postcards and stamps. No need to hunt them down, you'll know exactly where they are.

Renting a Car -- The fastest way off the beaten track is to rent a car. With a car, you have complete freedom--go where you want, when you want. See things most tourists won't ever see.

Buy a Phone Card -- Normal phone cards are still very handy, even in a mobile phone world. Phone cards are usually the cheapest way to call family or friends back home.

free, extra module #2: numbers, time & money

travel spanish class

Don't waste time on complex numbers.  Almost all numbers you hear when traveling are between zero and 999.

See and hear the numbers how they're used in real life.  It's much easier than what's taught in most courses.

Four Practice Rounds give you the practice you'll need to recognize the numbers when they're said. Hear the numbers from real Spanish people and Latinos.

Don't feel like a complete idiot saying "Huh?" when there are six people waiting behind you in line.

quick summary of the travel spanish crash course:

While traveling in Spanish-speaking countries it’s necessary to know the numbers and dates . Even if you know how to ask “ How much does it cost? ” – it doesn’t mean that you will understand the answer (yes, I’ve been there).

For this reason, we have created a complete post for Numbers in Spanish . If you have difficulties with long numbers or find yourself frustrated with 5, 15, 50, and 500, then you should definitely check it out.

Franko is a Great Teacher!

I studied with Franko in 3 groups as well as in private lessons. Franko is a very cool teacher. Not only he is brilliant and articulate, but he also makes even difficult exercises fun and memorable. Franko provides almost miraculous motivation to complete homework and practice between lessons.

He is also technically savvy, so studying over Skype is not a problem. He builds the student community by organizing events and parties where students of different levels can meet for practice and fun.

Spanish Lessons - Jarred M.

Franko Made Learning Easy!

I took classes with Franko back at USF as part of a conversational component with our Spanish classes that varied from 1 to 2 times per week. I have always been drawn to learning Spanish and had a passion to learn. Franko made learning easy and enjoyable.

All of his classes were filled with valuable content that helped me to expand my understanding of the language. The biggest reason why I enjoyed it, was his ability to make his classes fun and engaging to all students. I highly recommend Franko if you’re interested in learning Spanish and want to do so in a fun environment!

Jeremy G.

Franko’s Approach is Dynamic!

Combining his passion for language and his deep knowledge of Latin culture, Franko’s approach to teaching is dynamic and effective. His experience in the field allows him to deliver quality results for seasoned Spanish speakers and novices alike.

Along with delivering the material concisely and effusively, Franko is very friendly and available to provide learning opportunities outside of the classroom – even being a tour guide for some of his students on a trip to his native Peru. If you want a full Spanish language immersion – look no further.

Tony Y.

Juan is an amazing instructor.

Kasa de Franko Spanish School is an incredible program to learn and improve your Spanish skills. I did not learn Spanish as a child, but instead began learning as a young adult. I was often struggling with my confidence when speaking to Spanish-speakers, as I was embarrassed when communicating incorrectly.

This is where Kasa de Franko Spanish School came in and helped tremendously. I have been working with Juan and the Learn Spanish Speaking program. Juan is an amazing instructor and always makes me feel comfortable as I struggle and learn with my Spanish-speaking skills. Juan takes his time and never has a problem repeating what he says when I am unable to understand. I have never once felt uncomfortable and embarrassed when speaking with Juan, and this in turn has helped boost my confidence when speaking to fluent Spanish-speakers. I highly recommend Kasa de Franko Spanish School, especially if you are struggling with your confidence in speaking Spanish!

The Top 6 Destinations in Baja California, Mexico

travel spanish class

When a place has earned its spot on our Top Places to Travel in 2019, you know it's good. The Baja California Peninsula has clear blue waters, fresh design, and seriously good guacamole.

Never miss a beat: Sign up for our wanderlusty newsletter .

Punta Lobos beach in Todos Santos.

Todos Santos

What’s to Love: A hippie, happy eco-chic town 45-minutes north of Cabo San Lucas on Mexico's Baja California Peninsula. This hidden treasure has long been a haven for travelers, surfers, artists, and bohemians seeking tranquility away from the hustle of Cabo. The infamous surf break of Playa Cerritos beach is a great place to ride the cerulean-blue waves — rent a board or arrange a lesson from Mario Surf School . Pescadero or Punta Lobos are also great beaches to stroll: Pitch an umbrella in the sand and allow the vitamin D to soak right in. For dry land explorers, walk the cobblestone streets of tiny artisanal boutiques, or hit the trail above Punta Lobos for breathtaking views of the old fishing port, home to a sea lion colony. Don’t miss Restaurant Bar Bahia — a super-casual corner spot in Todos Santos with awesome fish tacos and ceviche (cash only).

Where to Stay: Hotel San Cristóbal , a beachside desert oasis by Texas hotelier Liz Lambert of Bunkhouse Group , and the perfect place to relax by the pool, sip mezcal in colorful-chic kimonos, and simply sleep in. On a budget? La Bohemia Baja is an eight-room boutique bed-and-breakfast hideaway among a lush tropical garden and steps away from the center of town.

Baja Beans, Pescadero.

What’s to Love : A few miles south of sister town Todos Santos, Pescadero is an abundant and shockingly green oasis in the dry Baja desert, its roads filled with palm groves leading to the endless golden beach. Just off the main road is Baja Beans , serving the best coffee and community in town. It’s your chance to hang with locals, check your email (if you must...), and enjoy live music on Sundays, when they host a farmers market with produce and arts and crafts. (Pro tip: Try the chocolate cake.) Enjoy a few meals at Hierbabuena in the middle of a garden surrounded by farmland: It’s the most popular restaurant in the Todos/Pescadero area for good reason.

Where to Stay : Rancho Pescadero is an adults-only hotel with a relaxed vibe and the very best Mexican hospitality. Expect fresh coffee and pastries brought to your door in the morning. (Though the huevos rancheros are not to be missed.) Hotel Punta Pescadero Paradise is the top spot along the East Cape for fishing, diving, and the adventurous getaway.

Cabo San Lucas

What’s to Love : The southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, commonly known as Los Cabos, refers to the adjacent towns of Cabo San Lucas on the Pacific Ocean and San José del Cabo on the Sea of Cortez (also where the international airport is). While the infamous Zona Hotelera (hotel zone) used to dominate the college spring break scene, Cabo San Lucas has officially graduated, with new high-design boutique hotels, romantic seaside villas, Hakkasan restaurants Casa Calavera  and  Herringbone Los Cabos , and nary a tequila shot in sight. Good to know: Cabo is best for pool loungers, as swimming is prohibited on most beaches due to the strong ocean undertow.

Where to Stay : Las Ventanas al Paraíso , a fabulous Rosewood Resort halfway between San Jose and Cabo, specializes in service and luxury. (Case in point: They have an entire department devoted to creating romantic experiences for guests.)

View from the Presidential Suite pool at Montage Los Cabos.

San José del Cabo

What’s to Love : Less of a party town than Cabo San Lucas, with a more laid-back, small-town lifestyle. It’s best for artists, foodies, and travelers looking for a little more culture and authenticity than the all-inclusive resorts that Cabo is known for. Take a stroll to the quaint center square, where colorful shops, galleries, and restaurants populate the streets.

Where to Stay : Montage Los Cabos , a relaxation haven located in a quiet cove on one of the only swimmable beaches in the area (read the full Fathom review here ). Los Cabos newcomer Solaz Los Cabos is the ultimate tranquil winter escape on the tip of the peninsula. One&Only Palmilla , a 1950s beachfront Spanish-style landmark, offers a private yacht for sunset cruises and guided fishing adventures. Drift San Jose is a little urban oasis in the center of San Jose and perfect for independent travelers seeking peace, quiet, and comfort in a tranquil and private setting. Once you step inside the  Viceroy Los Cabos , you’ll be lost in an otherworldly escape. The architectural masterpiece by prominent Mexican architect Miguel Ángel Aragonés incorporates water, sand, and sea breeze into its very foundations. A dining experience at  Nido  is not to be missed — think inspired ceviche, creative cocktails, and live music inside the coolest hive ever. (Read the full Fathom review  here .)

Whale shark in La Paz.

What’s to Love : A chance to swim with whale sharks , as Fun Baja's crew are experts in spotting the wild creatures. Take a day trip to the natural sanctuary of Isla Espíritu Santo and snorkel or scuba dive with the sea lions of Los Islotes. Those interested in whale watching should travel to Baja between December and April.

Where to Stay : CostaBaja Resort & Spa is La Paz’s original five-star resort surrounded by a private marina — a complete oasis where the desert meets the sea. Sleep under the stars at the luxury glamping site Camp Cecil in beautiful and ultra-chic safari tents overlooking the Sea of Cortez on Espíritu Santo Island. Vena Cava winery.

Valle de Guadalupe

What’s to Love: Drive two hours south of San Diego, and you'll discover one of the world's most interesting and up-and-coming wine regions. Yes, in Mexico. Valle de Guadalupe is special and limited, as most wineries are small in production and have very little distribution outside the country. Tres Mujeres is an all-female collective of wine producers where you’re likely to hear their stories and meet one of the owners as she pours your flight. If you only do one thing, drink three kinds of Mexican bubbly and eat everything at Conchas de Piedra , where everything is prepared on a wood fire in the outdoor kitchen.

Where to Stay : There are no chain hotels in the Valle de Guadalupe. (Yet.) Of the luxurious, modern boutique hotels, Encuentro Guadaloupe has stunning views and individual, modern cabins hanging off the cliffs. La Villa del Valle is a pretty Tuscan-style country retreat by the Vena Cava group. Finca la Divina is a four-bedroom inn run by beloved local chef Javier Plascencia near his restaurant, Finca Altozano . Villas El Cielo is a lovely and modern option on the El Cielo winery. Hacienda Guadalupe is a nice mid-range option.

Calling all 'tortured poets': Colorado State University offers new Taylor Swift course

travel spanish class

“Verano Cruel"?

Not for Taylor Swift fans.

It won’t be a “Cruel Summer” for them.

At least not for those taking “Spanish for Swiftie Purposes (Taylor’s Version),” an online course at Colorado State University tailored around the megastar’s success.

The class, “LSPA 380A5,” as it’s listed in the course catalog, is an introductory class in Spanish linguistics, designed and taught by self-professed “Swiftie” Alyssia Miller De Rutte, an associate professor at CSU.

“In language education now, we’re at a turning point, and we need to be offering courses that students are interested in that are relevant to the time we’re living in,” Miller De Rutte said Friday. “… It’s a great time to do it. (Swift) has traveled to several Spanish-speaking countries with her 'Eras Tour,' and she’s going to Spain this summer.

“The impact she’s had on those countries is enormous, the cultural phenomena that is Taylor Swift. It’s the perfect time to think about that in Spanish.”

Miller De Rutte teaches graduate-level Spanish courses in applied linguistics and specializes in medical Spanish. Students in this course, she said, will study corpus linguistics and perform thematic analysis, "which is where we will systematically track her word choice, the structure of her songs throughout time to see how it evolves, and how that all works in Spanish."

The course will touch on cultural and political differences between Spanish-speaking countries and the United States and the relevance of the messages in Swift’s lyrics to her audiences in those countries.

She hasn’t yet completed the course syllabus.

“Like any good Swiftie, I was waiting for the album that came out today to see how that can play a role,” Miller De Rutte said, noting the release of "The Tortured Poets Departments" on April 19. “I have some objectives, and I want to see how I can incorporate this new album and its 31 songs.”

Simple word-for-word translations from one language to another generally don’t work well in music, Miller De Rutte said. Sentence structures are different, as are idiomatic expressions. So, one of the challenges students will face, she said, is to choose words that fit both the message and melody of Swift’s songs.

“I don’t know if we’ll do a full song or a chorus or two of a couple songs,” she said. “But we’ll be kind of walking through that and see what we get. How students do that individually and see what choices people made and work through those."

Miller De Rutte said she also wants to incorporate "the different varieties of Spanish."

"In one dialect, you’re going to say it one way, and in another, you’re going to say it in another way, especially idiomatic expressions and colloquialisms," she said. "Who is your audience? And to think about your choices that you’re making then, too.”

Registration for the course has been open for about a month, she said. It’s an eight-week class, worth three college credits, that is open to anyone. Those not already enrolled at CSU will have to apply through the university's non-degree student admissions process. The course will be taught online asynchronously, beginning June 10. Students will be able to proceed at their own pace, for the most part, but there will be live online discussions at various points, Miller De Rutte said.

Right now, there’s just one section planned, for a maximum of 20 students. But if there’s enough demand, an additional section could be offered.

The idea for the course, Miller De Rutte said, came out of discussion over dinner with some other faculty members. Talking about Swift-themed courses being offered at other universities across the country, “we were joking that we should do a Taylor Swift course in our department,” she said. “And I was like, ‘No, we actually should.’ It just kind of grew from there.”

Miller De Rutte, who said she is a “little bit younger than Taylor,” has seen the megastar in concert twice. The first time was on her “Fearless Tour” in 2009 at Penn State, where Miller De Rutte was an undergraduate student. The second was last summer at one of the Denver shows of “The Eras Tour.”

“I’m a big fan,” she said.

The 5 Best Airlines For First Class In 2024

  • Airlines are still focusing on premium products, including first class.
  • Air France, Lufthansa, Etihad Airways, and Singapore Airlines have quality first class experiences.
  • However, All Nippon Airways could be the best first class experience to discover in 2024.

Despite airlines shying away from first class seating during the past few years, especially before the pandemic, there has been a resurgent focus on premium products in 2023 and 2024. Demand for first, business, and premium economy class seating has driven airlines to innovate and refresh their top-of-the-line products, with several carriers introducing new first class seats and suites.

If you were to look to tick off a few bucket list-worthy first class seats to fly on in 2024, several airlines have introduced or are planning to introduce new first class cabins during the year, indicating that the crème de la crème of airline seats is not going away anytime soon.

Air France’s La Première

Announced in: may 2022.

Aircraft available on:

  • Boeing 777-300ER

While the cabin is not available yet, Air France has promised that it will be during the upcoming winter season, which starts in October 2024. The carrier announced that it was redesigning its La Premiere cabin, exclusively deployed on its 777-300ERs, in May 2022.

At the time, Air France said that La Premiere would be the longest on the market, offering up to three modular configurations that can be fully privatized, including transforming the seat into a sofa or a bed. Furthermore, the carrier promised that it would appear on more aircraft than previously.

Benjamin Smith, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Air France, said that La Premiere represents the best of French excellence and is a vital part of the airline’s DNA. The executive noted that even at the peak of the pandemic, the airline saw the importance of a first class cabin, especially on routes across the Atlantic Ocean.

Lufthansa allegris, announced in: february 2023.

  • Airbus A350
  • Boeing 787-9
  • Boeing 777X

While Lufthansa teased the new designs of its first class cabins in October 2022, the German airline officially introduced the new Allegris cabins, including new first class seats, in February 2023. The seats will feature on Airbus A350, Boeing 787, and 777X aircraft, upon their delivery to the German airline.

At the time, Lufthansa said the new Allegris seats would be introduced with its latest Airbus A350-900 aircraft in 2024. However, two of its most recent Airbus A350-900 aircraft were straight sent to the desert, reportedly because supply chain issues derailed the airline’s plans to introduce the new cabins on the two aircraft, which is why they are now parked at Teruel Airport (TEV), Spain.

Why Lufthansa Has Flown Two Brand New Airbus A350s Straight To Storage

Nevertheless, while they might be delayed, the first class cabins will still have plenty on offer, including unprecedented privacy for the German airline’s top-of-the-line seats. For example, Lufthansa said that customers can warm or cool their seats in the suite according to their needs.

Lufthansa Pushes New Cabin Launch To 2024 Due To Delivery Delays

Etihad airways the residence, announced in: may 2014.

  • Airbus A380

While ‘The Residence’ is not a new product, the fact is that with the return of the airline’s Airbus A380 aircraft, passengers once again can enjoy ‘The Residence,’ an even more luxurious cabin than first class on the UAE-based Etihad Airways flights.

The one new development with the self-advertised three-room suite in the sky is that starting April 2024, the airline will deploy its Airbus A380 aircraft to fly between Abu Dhabi Zayed International Airport (AUH) and New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). When the aircraft returned to service in July 2023, the airline deployed it only on the AUH – London Heathrow Airport (LHR) route.

A380 Return: The Fleet Of Etihad Airways In 2024

Singapore airlines first class, announced in: july 2013.

While it has been more than a decade since Singapore Airlines first unveiled its newest first class product, the cabin still has been one of the top-rated cabins globally as the airline has managed to provide an unparalleled experience to its customers.

Unfortunately, the carrier’s Boeing 777-300ER only welcomes four first class passengers since its other long-haul aircraft, including the Airbus A350-900, A350-1000, A380, and Boeing 787-10, only have business class seats. The only exception is the Airbus A380, with the airline offering the ‘Suite’: a similar experience to Etihad Airways ‘The Residence.’ When Singapore Airlines announced the cabin in July 2013, it said that the seat would introduce a new industry benchmark for premium air travel, including redesigning its business and economy class seats.

5 Reasons Flying Singapore Airlines Is Worth It

All nippon airways the suite, announced in: july 2019.

All Nippon Airways (ANA) announced its new first class seats in July 2019 . The airline, which also publicized its newest business class seat on the same date, described the then-new suite as designed by combining Japanese heritage and Western design.

While Skytrax rated Singapore Airlines’ first class as the superior product in 2023, maybe ANA, whose first class was ranked as the third-best seat in the world, will have what it takes to take it to the next level. After all, Air Frances’s La Premiere, voted second-best, is getting a refresh, which could go either way and provide a potential opportunity for ANA.

The Japanese carrier offers its first class product on two aircraft, its iconic ‘Flying Turtles,’ the Airbus A380s, and the Boeing 777-300ER. When it introduced the new suites, ANA said that this was the most spacious fully enclosed seating ever seen on an ANA aircraft, adding that features include privacy-enhancing doors and a 43-inch monitor, which also showed entertainment in a 4K resolution.

Which US Airlines Still Have First Class In 2024?

The 5 Best Airlines For First Class In 2024

Etihad's mammoth Airbus A380 has returned to the US after nearly retiring. Take a look at its exclusive $24,000 'The Residence' first-class suite.

  • Etihad Airways has returned its beloved Airbus A380 to New York amid booming demand.
  • The decision comes after the airline nearly retired the quad-engine superjumbo during the pandemic.
  • Etihad's A380 boasts the world's only three-room suite, complete with a bedroom and shower.

Insider Today

Eithad Airways' popular Airbus A380 has returned to the US after the pandemic nearly forced it into retirement .

On Monday, the mammoth plane took off from Abu Dhabi's Zayed International Airport at about 3:20 a.m. local time and landed at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport more than 14 hours later, just after 10 a.m. ET.

This is the first time Etihad's quad jet fleet has flown the route since 2020 and represents its official re-entry into the US market after four years. The superjumbo also flies between Abu Dhabi and London.

According to Etihad, the A380 will boost capacity between the two metropolitan cities as it takes over one of the two flights presently serving New York-JFK — the second operated by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

"Our North American portfolio has continued to exceed expectations with the second daily JFK flight introduced last year performing well," Etihad CRO Arik De told Business Insider in December when the route was first announced.

With its return, deep-pocket US travelers once again have access to the A380's crown jewel: The Residence.

Take a look at what up to $50,000 gets you on a roundtrip flight between New York and Abu Dhabi in Etihad's one-of-a-kind first-class suite.

Exclusively installed on its mammoth A380, The Residence is the world's only three-room suite on a passenger plane.

travel spanish class

The entire suite can accommodate up to two passengers and is located on the second level of the superjumbo .

Other carriers like Singapore Airlines offer first-class cabins with a separate bed , but Etihad takes luxury to a new level.

According to De, the Residence is only available by upgrading a first class ticket. Fares were priced at over $20,000 one-way pre-pandemic.

travel spanish class

When booking on Etihad's website in December for a flight between New York and Abu Dhabi in mid-May, its first-class apartments were priced between roughly $9,000 and $10,000 each way, with another $3,000 per leg on top for the Residence, totaling about $24,000 .

Looking again on Monday, it appears the Residence is already booked up on most days for May, as it cannot be added to first-class bookings .

Demand for The Residence is booming — helping make Etihad's A380 an 'overall commercially profitable venture in New York.'

travel spanish class

"We had our first bookings within minutes of the announcement that the A380 was coming to New York," De told BI. "It's a famous experience, and there are plenty of people out there who want to sample it, either as a dream one-off or as part of their overall travel mix."

The first space in The Residence is the livingroom with a giant flatscreen television and a multi-person couch.

The living room has a sliding door to ensure full privacy from the rest of the aircraft.

The space is designed to accommodate up to two people.

A dedicated cabin crew team serves The Residence passengers. They will set up the dining table and serve meals, as well as prep the space for sleeping.

Passengers will be served luxury meals, including things like caviar, steak, champagne, and wine.

However, the butler service formerly offered in The Residence will not return, aviation journalist Andreas Spaeth said on X in mid-November after an interview with Etihad CEO Antonoaldo Neves.

Etihad confirmed to BI that a butler would not be onboard.

Down the hall from the living room is The Residence's private bathroom, complete with a shower.

"[The Residence] is a great experience for everyone, whether they are flying for business or pleasure or both," De told BI. "Flights between Abu Dhabi and New York are over 13 hours long, and people flying for business want to arrive refreshed and relaxed."

Monday's flight took a northern route across Russia, putting the trek at more than 14 hours, according to FlightAware.

Showers are rare onboard airliners because the water adds extra weight, with Emirates as the only other carrier offering one.

Like Etihad, Emirates has a first class suite complete with a shower spa. The rival UAE carrier is so loyal to its A380 that it recently announced a $1.5 billion investment to keep them flying.

The last room of The Residence is the bedroom.

The double bed is another rarity onboard commercial jetliners.

Qatar Airways famously flies a double bed in its QSuite business class, voted the best in the world by Skytrax last year.

Considered one of the most luxurious airline offerings in the sky, travelers were worried when Etihad's A380 nearly retired.

The A380's poor economics and fuel-hungry quad-engines make it an expensive jet to fly, and many carriers have ditched it for more efficient twinjets like the Boeing 787 and the Airbus A350.

Fortunately, the surge in demand for air travel in 2022 prompted Etihad to add it back to the fleet.

"We are entering a new phase of sustainable growth to meet the demands of our customers, and the A380 is the right aircraft to meet capacity demands on very select routes," De told BI. "We brought it back on our London services earlier this year, and saw tremendous commercial success, with guests loving the experience."

Etihad's new A380 route will be the second in its network following the return to London in July 2023.

According to Cirium data, Etihad has been flying three of its A380s between Abu Dhabi and London as of October, but one was plucked to serve the New York-JFK route.

De told BI that Etihad has a total of four planes in service and, in the short term, "will deploy them where it makes the most sense."

De told BI that the decision to add the A380 to NYC came after the second frequency proved commercially successful.

"Given the commercial performance, and the popularity of the aircraft with our guests, we feel now is the right time to bring the A380 on to our service to New York," he said.

Although some of its A380s are flying again, six of Etihad's 10 superjumbos are still parked but remain 'in reserve.'

travel spanish class

The six jets are sitting in airports across France and Spain, according to Planespotters .

"We are focused on sustainable expansion going forward, and having the option of drawing on our A380 fleet is an element of that," De told BI, noting Etihad plans to double its fleet size to 150 planes and carry 33 million passengers by 2030. "We will make sure we choose the right aircraft to achieve that, and the A380s will be part of that mix for a while."
