A Complete Guide to Travel Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan in ‘One Go’

Planning a trip to the Himalayan countries Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan in ‘One Go? Here is a complete guide to help you plan the Himalayan single trip smoothly.

“Based on our experiences organizing Nepal Tibet Bhutan Tour packages for more than a decade, we present the most important things that you should know before traveling to these nations in a single trip.”

A trip to Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan as 3 Country Himalayan destinations that cover three different countries in a single tour allowing us to experience the culture, tradition, history, and religion of each country. From the magical city of Kathmandu including ancient temples & palaces to the roof of the world of Tibet including the Potala Palace & monasteries in Lhasa and Tibet Everest Base Camp to the last Shangri-La, Bhutan to explore the cultural cities of Paro and Thimphu with a hike to Tiger’s Nest . This can be the complete combo trip to the Himalayas and learn about the culture, history, and religion (Buddhism and Hinduism) that are being practiced differently in each country.

How to plan the 3 Country Himalayan tours (Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan)?

First of all, it is advised that you allow at least two weeks to explore these three beautiful Himalayan destinations and choose the best tour company that can help you plan all the arrangements including Visas and flights to and from Paro and Lhasa. 3 Country Himalayan Tours (Cross-Country) including Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan can be started from any city such as Kathmandu, Lhasa, or Paro . Depending on your flight, destination, and cheapest fare; you can choose the cities to start your journey of 3 Country Himalayan Tours. However, some procedures need to be followed before you book the tour. Your tour operator can organize everything including Visas, flights, etc and it is wise to know everything before you plan this trip.

3 Country Himalayan Tours STARTING from Kathmandu

Dhulikhel

Trip Starts: Kathmandu (Nepal)

Trip ends:  paro/kathmandu, itinerary in order: kathmandu (nepal) – lhasa (tibet) – bhutan, total no. of days suggested: 11-14 days.

“Currently, there is no direct flight available from Kathmandu to Lhasa. Instead, the flight must include a stopover in Chengdu, which contributes to the high cost of the airfare. Therefore, it is advised to initiate the journey from Beijing or another location in Mainland China and travel overland through the Kyirong border for a smoother travel experience. However, please note that this overland route will add an additional 3-4 days to the itinerary from Lhasa to Kathmandu. “

Starting the trip from Kathmandu could be the first choice for most travelers. It is much easier to plan the 3 Country Himalayan Tours including the flight and visa from Kathmandu. Tour agents based in Kathmandu are well experienced in organizing your tours professionally. However, it is important to select the best itinerary and tour company to have a hassle-free arrangement. Here are the point-wise suggestions that you can take into account before you plan a trip starting from Kathmandu.

  • First of all, make sure your visa is valid at least 6 months before the tour start date and obtain a multi-entry Nepal Visa either on arrival in Kathmandu or your hometown. Send the color-scanned clear passport copy to your tour agent whom you are looking to book the entire trip after you confirm the tour and price. It is advised to book all three destinations with the same company to have a better experience.
  • Allow at least 4 working days in Kathmandu to process the Tibet Group Visa (TGV) . Your original passport must be submitted to apply for the TGV at the Embassy of China in Kathmandu and your tour operator can process the visa on your behalf. Until TGV is issued, you can go for a tour around Kathmandu and its surroundings or take a half-day H elicopter tour to Everest Base Camp . If you are a fit hiker, you may go for Everest Base Camp Trek , Annapurna Base Camp Trek , Ghorepani Poonhill Trek , Kathmandu culture trek , or any other guided private day tours .
  • It is advised to pick Tibet first and then Bhutan . This helps save your time and the Bhutan Visa Clearance can be ready during the trip to Tibet. You can choose Tibet tours from 3-4 days to 7-8 days, depending on your holiday time and budget. If you are planning a budget tour for 7-8 days in Tibet, you can choose 7 nights 8 days Kathmandu to Lhasa overland Tour which starts every Saturday from Kathmandu or you can plan a tailor-made private tour.

Suggested Itinerary |  3 Country Tour Nepal Tibet Bhutan – 11 Days

3 country himalayan tours starting from lhasa -arrive from china (beijing/chengdu) .

Potala

Trip Starts: Lhasa, Tibet (3650m) – Arrive from Beijing or Chengdu via flight or train

Trip ends: paro/kathmandu, itinerary in order: lhasa – kathmandu – bhutan, total days suggested: 11-14 days.

The 3 Country Himalayan tour can be started from Lhasa – before you book the flight and tour; you should be aware of the permit and visa requirements for the Tibet tour. If you are entering from Beijing or Chengdu to Lhasa via flight or train; make sure that you have the original permit in hand before you leave for Lhasa. You can plan the Lhasa-only trip or take an overland tour to Kathmandu via Everest Base Camp.

  • To process the tour, you will be required to obtain a Chinese individual tourist visa in your home country and send it to your tour operator once you confirm the tour and price. Because only the tour company is allowed to take you around who issues the permit for you. So choosing a different company after getting permits is not possible.
  • If you are working or studying in China, you will need to send the visa copy along with the leave/no objection letter from your concerned employer or university.
  • Your tour operator will process the permits which take a minimum of 5-7 working days or it might take even longer during the peak season (July, August, and September).
  • After the permits are issued in Lhasa, the original permits should be couriered to the address in China where you will be staying for a night (It is advised to stay at least a night in China). Send your apartment or hotel address where the agent can send them safely,  grab your permits, and fly or train to Lhasa. However, in some routes, the color print of your permits is accepted.

After the trip to Tibet is over, you may fly into Kathmandu from Lhasa or take an overland tour to Kathmandu via the Kerung border . If you are traveling overland, there will be a guide at the border to receive you and take you to Kathmandu, it takes about 7-8 hours through the rough road to reach Kathmandu. Then, you can explore around Kathmandu and beyond before you fly to Bhutan.

Same as Kathmandu, you can plan 3 Country Himalayan Tours starting from Paro, Bhutan. You can land at Paro airport from several destinations such as Thailand (Bangkok), India (Delhi, Kolkotta Guwahati, Bagdogra) Singapore, Bangladesh (Dhaka), and Nepal (Kathmandu) . There are two flights ( Du rk Air and  Bh utan Airlines ) in operation, check the destinations and available dates before you confirm the date of your holiday to the Himalayas. After you complete the tour in Bhutan, you will fly to Kathmandu, a short flight from Paro to Kathmandu, you can enjoy the eye-level Himalayan vistas from the window – request for a left seat window for KTM to Paro and a right window seat for Paro to KTM. As described above, you will need to allow at least 4 working days in Kathmandu to process for TGV and fly to Lhasa or travel to Lhasa via border crossing.

3 Country Himalayan Tour BUDGET Plan

It is advised to travel in a group to minimize the tour cost as tailor-made private trips are expensive especially if you are traveling solo. Being two people & choosing 3 country tours for about 11-14 days with a 3-Star hotel stay with breakfast, guide, private transportation, and entrance fees; the budget would be between USD 3500-USD 5000 Per Person including flights and visas to/from Kathmandu. However, it depends on the package you choose, there will be varieties of budget to luxury versions and prices may differ accordingly.

The destinations Tibet and Bhutan DO NOT allow independent travel and it is a must to hire a licensed guide. The trip has to be booked through the local tour company or any international associates. There are some group tours available for the Tibet tour that you can check before you book the trip. However, if you are a couple or group of friends/family of three or more with similar travel interests, it is wise to book tailor-made private trips to have a better travel experience.

Best time to go

It is possible to travel to three destinations all year round and getting the perfect weather for each destination at the same time can be difficult sometimes. Tibet is on the high Himalayan plateau and has arid weather and long winter the best time to visit Tibet is in during summer (June, July, August, and September) whereas Nepal and Bhutan share sub-tropical climates with four seasons such as spring ‘pre-monsoon’ (March, April, May), Summer ‘monsoon’ (June, July, August), Autumn ‘post-monsoon’ (September, October, November), and winter (December, January, February). Exploring only cities on this trip, all seasons are suggested, however; if you wish to choose the best months for combining the trip for all three destinations, it is recommended to travel during April, May, September, October, and November to enjoy the best weather/climate of three places of Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan.

Client Reviews

Nepal tibet and bhutan tour with outfitter himalaya.

I did a solo tour of Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan in the month of May. The Tour was organized by Outfitter Himalaya, and I loved it. Even before I got to Nepal, Arjun always replied to my emails promptly and gave me all the information I needed for the travel. Everything promised by the company was delivered, from the airport pick-up to the quality accommodation in Kathmandu, Chitwan, Pokhara, Lhasa, Thimphu, and Paro.

I had an incredible time driving through the mountains from Kathmandu to Lhasa (Tibet), the Himalayas are something that you need to see if you haven't been there. The guide was flexible and stopped anytime I wanted a break or something to eat or take pictures. The hotels were great - particularly the delicious food that I'd get every day. When I go back to Nepal, I will be booking with Outfitter Himalaya again, and I highly recommend the company for tours in Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan.

Depart early this morning for your flight to Tibet. If the weather is clear, the flight from Chengdu to Lhasa will offer spectacular panoramic views of the eastern ramparts of the Himalayas. China’s highest mountain peaks, the 24,783’ Minya Konka, and the mighty Namche Barwa (25,439 ft.) loom majestically on the horizon, surrounded by countless snow-capped peaks and high alpine valleys, climbing vertiginously upwards to the high-altitude Tibetan plateau.

Your guide will meet you at the airport for the drive (1.5 hours) across the Yarlung Valley to Tsedang (11,152 ft.). On your way, enjoy the exquisite beauty of the mighty Brahmaputra River, known as the Yarlung Tsangpo in this part of Tibet. The Yarlung Valley is certainly one of the most beautiful parts of Tibet, and the historic town of Tsedang will be your day’s destination. You spend the rest of the day relaxing and enjoying the sights in Tsedang, nestled beneath the slopes of the sacred Gangpo Ri.

Tsedang was at the crux of Tibetan civilization until Lhasa emerged as the preeminent center of Tibetan society in the 7th century. InTsedang you will have the opportunity to visit the monasteries of Ganden Chökhorling and Ngachö, and the ancient castle of Yumbu Lakang, the oldest building in Tibet.

As this is your first day at a higher elevation, physical exertion is recommended to allow your bodies to acclimate to the altitude. Take a late afternoon walk through the bazaar, if you’re feeling up for it.

(Tsedang Hotel; B, L, D)

Tour image

Begin your day with a drive through the stunningly beautiful Yarlung Tsangpo Valley as you head toward the important monastery of Samye. Aside from its tremendous scenic beauty, the Yarlung Valley is also famed for its place of honor in the Tibetan mythological canon. According to tradition, it was in the Yarlung Valley that Tibetan civilization came into being. At Gangpo Ri, it is said that Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, descended to earth in the guise of a monkey, and together with an incarnation of the goddess Tara, was the progenitor of the Tibetan race.

To reach Samye, you must cross the mighty Tsangpo River by ferry to reach Surkhar on the river’s north bank. From here it is a short drive to Samye, Tibet’s first monastic institution, founded in the 8th Century CE by the fabled King Trisong Detsen. This monastery is closely associated with the legendary Padmasambhava, aka Guru Rinpoche, who established the Buddhist faith in this region of Tibet. Due to its close connection with Guru Rinpoche, Samye was originally tied to the Nyingmapa sect of Tibetan Buddhism, though it later came to be associated with the Sakyapa school. Samye is distinctive in that it is laid out as a mandala of theBuddhist cosmological vision. In its center rises the pivotal structure, the Ütse, which symbolizes Mt. Meru, the center of the Buddhist universe. Samye’s many temples, chapels, and chörtens are laid out around the Ütse in a circular pattern, signifying the oceans and continents of the Buddhist cosmos. After thoroughly exploring Samye, you will return through the Yarlung Valley to Tsedang.

Tour image

Take the old trade route over high passes and along the turquoise waters of Yamdrok Lake to Gyantse (13,050 ft.) Nomadic shepherds may be in this area and you may have the opportunity to visit them.

Yamdrok is known as the “scorpion lake,” due to its twisting shoreline, which, as the moniker suggestions, resembles a scorpion. Yamdrok is one of the four sacred lakes of Tibet and is a major pilgrimage site in its own right, with a kora path ringing its shores. The lake will be your companion for a good portion of your drive to Gyantse. From the rushing waters of the Tsangpo to the high mountain passes of Kamba-la and Karo-la, festooned with prayer flags, the drive from Tsedang to Gyantse is a breathtaking and photogenic journey.

Arriving in Gyantse, situated in the fertile and agriculturally productive Nyang-chu Valley with the impressive Gyantse Dzong (fort) sitting stolidly atop its lofty perch, you check in to your hotel and take in some sites in Gyantse. The highlight of your time in Gyantse will be a visit to the city’s most famous site, the sublime Kumbum chörten, located at the Pelkor Chöde Monastery. At one time, both the Gelugs and Sakya sects had monasteries at Pelkor Chöde.

As with most of Tibet’s great monastic institutions, Pelkor Chöde suffered greatly during the Cultural Revolution, but is nevertheless enjoying a period of revival. The Kumbum (which means “100,000 images” in Tibetan) is blessed with a plethora of amazing Buddhist murals, frescoes and statuary. You will also see many devout pilgrims completing the short kora around the Kumbum, spinning prayer wheels as they circumambulate themystical Gyantse Kumbum protected by the ever-watchful eyes of the Lord Buddha.

Traveling on the modern road that traverses the fertile green fields and dun-colored hills of the Nyang-chu Valley, you arrive in Shigatse (12,800 ft.), Tibet’s second largest city, and home to the monastery of Tashilhunpo, residence of the Panchen Lamas.

En route you have the option of stopping at Shalu Monastery and the small agricultural communities.

After checking in at the hotel, embark on a visit to Tashilhunpo. Founded in 1447 by another disciple of the great Tsongkhapa, Tashilhunpo was the resting place of the 1st Dalai Lama.Nevertheless, the institution has come to be identified with the Panchen Lamas, the second most important spiritual reincarnation in Tibetan Buddhism (after the Dalai Lamas). Although the original manifestation of the Panchen Lama was identified by the “Great Fifth” Dalai Lama, a rivalry between the two great figures developed over the course of the following centuries.

Tashilhunpo is an intriguing place to visit. It is a very large complex and, like Drepung, rewards the visitor who takes the time to explore the wander the monastery’s byways. Tashilhunpo is an active monastery with a fairly sizeable contingent of monks in residence. The highlight of a visit to the monastery is the massive, 75-foot-plus gilded statue of Maitreya.

Drive along the powerful Tsangpo (meaning The River) as you make your way through the beautiful countryside of Ü, the historically rich province of Central Tibet. Winding your way through the stunningly austere Tibetan landscape, you finally enter the environs of Lhasa, Tibet’s most populous city. There before you, standing imposingly upon its lofty precipice, is the staggeringly beautiful and instantly recognizable Potala Palace, its regal red and white façade and glittering golden gables towering over the Kyi-chu Valley.

The “forbidden city” of Lhasa will reveal its unique character and enchanting mystique as you visit many of its most significant historical and cultural sites.

(Shangri-La Hotel; B, L, D)

Tour image

Spend the next two days exploring the city’s most important sites.

Drepung Monastery, beautifully situated in the unpopulated hills west of Lhasa, is a remarkable place. At one time Drepung was home to 10,000 monks, establishing it as the largest monastic institution in the world. Drepung is a large establishment and it is worth the time to explore in depth. Drepung was founded in 1416, just prior to the establishment of Sera. Notably, Drepung’s Ganden Palace was home to the Dalai Lamas until the construction of the Potala by the Great Fifth Dalai Lama in the 17th century. Drepung’s many colleges, halls and temples extend up the hillside towards the peak of Gephel Ri, encouraging the visitor to wander the many byways that meander through the compound’s whitewashed structures. One of Drepung’s many attractions is the massive, two-story statue of Maitreya, the Future Buddha, which attracts pilgrims from throughout Tibet. Drepung’s dramatic location offers splendid views of the Kyi-chu Valley below, including the monastery of Nechung nestled at the foot of the hill below Drepung.

Jokhang is Lhasa’s sacred religious temple. While the Potala Palace played host to Tibet’s affairs of state, Lhasa’s second great historic site, the Jokhang temple, is the religious heart and soul of Tibetan Buddhism. The Jokhang, arguably Tibet’s holiest religious shrine, was constructed in the 7th Century CE under the guidance of the indomitable King Songtsen Gampo. As legend has it, Songtsen Gampo’s Chinese and Nepalese brides brought the Dharma to Tibet, as well as the holiest Buddhist relic in Tibet, the “Jowo Rinpoche.” This golden, bejeweled statue of the Buddha Shakyamuni is the highlight of any visit to the Jokhang. The roof of the Jokhang, with its wonderful golden gables and carvings, offers a magnificent view of the Potala and the busy Barkhor markets below.

The Barkhor, the maze-like warren of shops and stalls that surrounds the Jokhang, will beckon you to join the Tibetans who travel here to pay homage to the Jokhang as they circumambulate the sacred shrine.

Pilgrims journey from throughout Tibet to make prostrations and to complete this ritual kora. Join with these amazing pilgrims as they make their way around this venerable site, and lose yourself amongst the vibrant sites, fantastic smells, and distinctive sounds of the bazaars of the Barkhor.

Looming over Lhasa and the Kyi-chu Valley is the monumental Potala Palace. A visit to this amazing historical site is certainly a highlight of any trip to Tibet. Explore the many chapels, halls and tombs of the Red Palace. Based on the mythical Potala in South India, this more tangible incarnation of the palace was the home of Tibet’s god-kings, the Dalai Lamas. Begun by the 5th Dalai Lama in the 17th century, the Potala was the winter residence of the Tibetan spiritual leader from the time of “The Great Fifth” until the current and 14th Dalai Lama, His Holiness Tenzin Gyatso, occupied it. Now a museum, the Potala is a treasure trove of Tibetan history, its dark and mysterious chapels luring the visitor to discover its many secrets.

Visit Sera Monastery, located to the north of Lhasa, which is perhaps most famous for the always lively sessions that take place in the Debating Courtyard.

Sera was founded in 1419 by a student of the legendary Tsongkhapa and was once home to several thousand Gelugs monks. Although the monastery is populated by far fewer monks these days, Sera, like many other Tibetan monasteries, is reemerging as a prominent center ofTibetan Buddhist studies. After exploring the Main Assembly Hall and many colleges, it is arguably the highlight of any visit to Sera to relax beneath the shady canopy of the Debating Courtyard’s many trees and revel in the sights and sounds as Sera’s monks energetically argue the finer points of Buddhist philosophy.

Early this morning transfer to Lhasa Airport for your flight to Kathmandu. As Nepal is 2 hours 45 minutes behind Tibet time (all of China/Tibet is on Beijing time, some three time zones to the east), you actually gain time upon arriving Kathmandu.

The legendary locale of Kathmandu conjures images of the ultimate mysterious and exotic travel destination. Located in Central Nepal, the Kathmandu Valley is the center of Nepali cultural and political life. Indeed, the Kathmandu Valley has been a hub of civilization for over two millennia. Kathmandu is living history, where the modern and ancient continue to mingle. It is an unforgettable experience to wander the mysterious bazaars of old Kathmandu, and this afternoon you can take a walking tour of locales such as the Durbar Square, Hanuman Dhoka, theancient palace of the Gorkha Kings and, of course, Kathmandu’s incomparable bazaars. While in Kathmandu, you will be staying at the iconic Yak & Yeti Hotel, in the heart of Kathmandu. The hotel is built around the All Durbar, the old palace of the Rana Dynasty. Through the years it has been the place to stay for royalty, heads of state, Hollywood celebrities and many mountaineering expeditions bound for Everest and the high Himalaya.

These turbo-prop pressurized aircraft have been specially outfitted with large viewing windows (every passenger has a window seat) and follow a flight path that parallels the high Himalaya all the way to Everest and back. Your Sherpa guide will keep you informed of all the names and climbing routes of the peaks as you fly by them. On return to your hotel, have breakfast with the Sherpa Guide and get all your questions on climbing Everest answered.

Although Nepal is the world’s only Hindu kingdom, the Buddhist faith is prevalent throughout the country. Indeed, some of Kathmandu’s most renowned sites are Buddhist. The eyes of the Lord Buddha gaze serenely upon the Kathmandu Valley from atop the photogenic stupa at Swayambhunath, also known as the Monkey Temple, for reasons that will become apparent when you visit. Swayambhunath is steeped in mythology, linked to the bodhissatva Manjushri, with historical links back to the 5th century. You can climb the stupa’s 365 steps with Buddhist pilgrims and join them in their ritual circumambulation. Views of the Kathmandu Valley from Swayambhunath are spectacular.

The large Buddhist stupa at Bodnath, a World Heritage Site, is equally renowned. The stupa is one of the world’s largest, dating back to the 6th century. Located on the old trade route from Nepal to Tibet, Bodnath is also home to a sizeable Tibetan community and is a wonderful place to witness traditional Buddhist ritual, as well as to shop for Tibetan arts and crafts.

Kathmandu is also home to the great Hindu temple atPashupatinath, located on the banks of the Bagmati River. This is a major pilgrimage site for the followers of Shiva, drawing Hindu faithful from around the world. Although the temple is off-limits to non-Hindus, travelers can still visit the temple precincts and view the temple from the opposite bank of the Bagmati. From here, one can see the temple’s cremation ghats and witness firsthand the Hindu cycle of life.

Fly to Pokhara this morning. Nestled in the Pokhara Valley, the city of Pokhara is surrounded by the towering Himalaya, including several of the range’s legendary peaks – Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, the iconic fish-tail peak of Machhapucchare, and of course, the redoubtable Annapurnas. Spend the remainder of the day exploring Pokhara and walking around the bazaar.

Revel in the glory of the mighty Himalaya as you visit sites and go on hikes around Pokhara; your guide can discuss specific options with you. Early morning, row across the lake and then hike up to the World Peace Pagoda giving you a bird’s eye-view of Pokhara City and the Valley. A short (1- to 1.5-hour) strenuous hike, almost all of it straight uphill. There are a hundred Peace Pagodas built around the world and this one in Nepal was actually the 71st Pagoda that was constructed. This project initiated soon after World War II by Nichidatsu Fujii, a Japanese monk, who was greatly inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, to inspire World Peace. There are three Pagodas built in the U.S. – San Francisco; Grafton, NY; and Leverett, MA. On the way back across the lake stop at the very active Parahi temple, built on a small island in the middle of the lake.

Return to Kathmandu. Delve deeper into the history of the Kathmandu Valley, visiting the ancient temple city of Bhaktapur and nearby Patan, including the rug-weaving center of Refugee Tibetans. The evening is at your leisure.

Your flight to Bhutan is parallel to the Himalayan range and one can see Everest, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga if the weather is clear. As you enter the Paro Valley, you will sweep past forested hills with the silvery Pa Chu (Paro River) meandering down the valley below. Paro Dzong (fortress) and Ta Dzong (watchtower) on the hills above the town will be a fine sight. Your guide will meet you at Paro airport and will transfer you to Bhutan’s capital, Thimphu, an exciting blend of tradition and modernity. The afternoon is at your leisure.

(Zhiwaling Ascent; B, L, D)

Your full day of sightseeing starts of with a visit to the market, where everyone goes to buy fruits and vegetables, rice, grains, chilies and other fresh foods. The crowded stalls offer many colorful local items such as yak tail dusters, butter teacups, turquoise from Tibet and musical instruments.

Visit the Institute for Zorig Chusum (commonly known as Painting School), where students undertake a six-year course on the 13 traditional arts and crafts of Bhutan, and continue onto the Textile and Folk Heritage Museums. These museums, both of which opened in 2001, provide fascinating insights into Bhutanese material culture and way of life.

The third king, His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, as a monument to world peace and prosperity, envisaged the construction of the National Memorial Chorten. Completed in 1974 after his untimely death, it is both a memorial to the Late King (“the Father of Modern Bhutan”) and a monument to world peace. The paintings and statues inside the monument provide a deep insight into Buddhist philosophy.

Tour image

Begin your drive to Punakha via Wangduephodrang. You will drive by what remains of the Wangduephodrang (or Wandgi) Dzong, sitting atop a hill at the confluence of the Punakha Chu and Tang Chu rivers. It was the town’s most visible feature and suffered great damage in a fire in June 2012. You arrive Punakha early afternoon, and will visit Punakha Dzong, a massive structure built at the junction of two rivers. Punakha was the capital of Bhutan until 1955, and still serves as the winter residence of the monk body. The first King, Ugyen Wangchuck, was crowned here in 1907. The fortress has withstood several damages from fire, earthquake and flood. The latest flood of October 1994 caused great damages to the fortress but miraculously spared the statue of Buddha Jojampa.

After breakfast, you embark on a walking excursion to Chimi Lhakhang, situated on a hillock in the center of the valley, which is dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kuenley, who in the late 15th century used humor, songs, and outrageous behavior to dramatize his teachings. Due to this, he is also known as the “Divine Madman.” This temple is also known as the temple of fertility. It is widely believed that couples that do not have children are usually blessed with a child soon after praying at the temple. It is a 30-minute walk across a field from the road to the temple. The trail leads across rice fields to the tiny settlement of Pana, which translates as “field.” The trail then follows a tiny stream downhill to Yoaka and across more fields before making a short climb to Chimi Lhakhang.

In the afternoon you take a beautiful hike to the regal Khamsum Yuelley Namgel Chorten, which was built to remove negative forces and promote peace, stability and harmony in the changing world. The Chorten dominates the upper Punakha Valley with commanding views across the Mo Chu and up towards themountainous peaks of Gasa and beyond.

Tour image

After an early breakfast, you drive up to Dochu-la pass (3,088 meters/10,130 feet) stopping briefly here to take in the view and admire the chorten, mani wall and prayer flags that decorate the highest point on the road. If skies are clear, the following peaks can be seen from this pass (left to right): Masagang (7,158 meters), Tsendagang (6,960 meters), Terigang (7,060 meters), Jejegangphugang (7,158 meters), Kangphugang (7,170 meters), Zongphugang (7,060 meters), a table mountain that dominates the isolated region of Lunana, and, finally, Gangkar Puensum (7,497 meters), the highest peak in Bhutan.

After checking in to your hotel (which offers a view of Taksang Monastery), you leave to visit Ta Dzong, originally built as a watchtower, which now houses the National Museum. The extensive collection includes antique thangka paintings, textiles, weapons and armor, household objects and a rich assortment of natural and historic artifacts. Walking down the trail, you will come to Rinpung Dzong (“Fortress of the Heap of Jewels”), which has a long and fascinating history. Along the wooden galleries lining the inner courtyard are fine wall paintings illustrating Buddhist lore such as four friends, the old man of long life, the wheel of life, scenes from the life of Milarepa, Mount Sumeru and other cosmic mandalas.

Tour image

Experience the wonders of the Drukgyel Dzong, a ruined fortress where Bhutanese warriors fought Tibetan invaders centuries ago. The Dzong was destroyed by accidental fire in 1951 and left in ruins.

Explore the dzong and surrounding village, and on a clear day experience the spectacular view of the majestic Mt. Chomolhari (7,314 meters/23,990 feet). The snowy dome of sacred Chomolhari, the “mountain goddess,” is best seen in all her glory from the approach road to the Dzong. Along the way you will see the 7th-century Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the 108 temples built in the Himalayas by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. The building of this temple marked the introduction of Buddhism to Bhutan.

You will also take an excursion to Taktsang, the most famous of Bhutanese monasteries. It is said that Guru Rinpoche arrived here on the back of a tigress and meditated at this monastery, hence its moniker of the “Tiger’s Nest.” The hiking excursion to themonastery’s viewpoint takes about five to six hours round trip.

How to travel between Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan

travel to nepal tibet and bhutan

Traveling to Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan in one trip is an amazing adventure that covers three of the most stunning places in the world.

Tibet and Bhutan are predominantly Buddhist in terms of religion as well as culture. Despite Nepal being the birth country of Buddha, only nine percent is Buddhist, with Hindu taking a leading role. This leads to a diverse and beautiful journey.

Location of Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan

Tibet, Nepal, and Bhutan are the main Himalayan regions of Southeast Asia. The largest of the three is Tibet, which covers almost the entire Tibetan plateau, with the exception of some lower-altitude areas in Sichuan and Qinghai Provinces of China. Ringed to the west and south by the Himalayan Mountain Range, Tibet is a vast land at the roof of the world, on the highest plateau on the planet that attracts millions of tourists to come for Tibet tours .

To the west of Tibet lies Nepal, a relatively small country that has India on all its other sides. Slightly rectangular in shape, Nepal is a landlocked country that has the Himalayas on its northern border, shared with Tibet Autonomous Region of China.

To the south of Tibet, surrounded on it other borders by the Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh and West Bengal, lies the small, landlocked kingdom of Bhutan . The last true Himalayan Kingdom and known as the last Shangri-La in Asia, Bhutan is a small country with an even smaller population.

The most convenient entry

Getting around between Tibet, Nepal, and Bhutan is more usually done by flights, as this is the easiest way to travel between the capitals of the three places. While overland travel is possible between Tibet and Nepal or Nepal and Bhutan, the majority of tourists prefer the option of flying to save time.

Travel must be from Nepal

Traveling directly from Tibet to visit Bhutan and vice versa is impossible, despite sharing a border. Throughout history, since the flight of the lamas from many of the minor schools of Tibetan Buddhism in the 11th century, the border between Tibet and Bhutan has been closed, and Bhutan has remained a mainly isolated country.

There is also no flight to Bhutan from Tibet, as the Bhutanese government only permits inbound flights from five countries across Asia. In order to get to Bhutan from Tibet, one has to first get to one of those five countries, which includes Nepal , Singapore, India, Bangladesh, and Thailand. And since there are no direct flights to four of the five countries, the main option for getting to Bhutan after visiting Tibet is by traveling via Nepal.

Nepal – Tibet Flight

Flights between Tibet and Nepal run daily, several times a day, and take just 90 minutes to make the trip. Flights depart from either Tribhuvan International Airport in Nepal or Lhasa Gonggar International Airport in Tibet, depending on which way you are traveling.

Flights from Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, and Lhasa, the regional capital of Tibet, are run only by domestic Chinese airlines, such as Air China, Tibet Airlines, and Sichuan Airlines. Flights cost around US$ 250 per person for a one-way economy flight, and Nepal has the only international airport that provides flights to Lhasa.

Nepal – Bhutan Flight

As one of only five countries that are allowed to offer flights to Bhutan, Nepal is the closest to the Himalayan kingdom in terms of distance. However, getting a flight is not as easy as you might think. Aside from there only being two or three flights per week, it is not possible to book a flight without first having booked a tour to Bhutan with a registered tour operator.

All flights to Bhutan are done using either Druk Air or Bhutan Airlines, the only two air carriers in Bhutan and the only airlines permitted to travel into the Paro International Airport. Bhutan has very strict restrictions on entry to the kingdom, and these two airlines run all the flights to Bhutan the ten airports in five countries that have permitted flight plans.

Recommended Travel Route between Tibet Nepal and Bhutan

There are really only two possible routes to use to travel between Bhutan, Tibet, and Nepal that make sense. There is not much point in traveling to Nepal and then Tibet, only to have to travel back to Nepal to visit Bhutan or vice versa.

Route 1: Arrive in Bhutan – Flight to Nepal – Overland to Tibet

Route one starts with your tour of Bhutan. Since you can get to Bhutan from India, Singapore , Bangladesh, and Thailand, as well as Nepal, you can start your tour from any of the other four countries you wish, depending on the availability of flights from your home location and from the Asian country to Bhutan.

After your tour in Bhutan, the next step is to fly to Nepal, to start the Nepali leg of your tour. Flights to Nepal from Bhutan will cost from around US$ 200, depending n the date of your flight, the airline used, and the time of year. Off-peak travel is much cheaper than peak travel to Bhutan and back. The flight takes around 1 hour 15 minutes to reach Tribhuvan International Airport in Nepal from Paro International Airport in Bhutan.

From Kathmandu, you actually have two options, to fly to Lhasa and tour Tibet on your chosen itinerary or take an overland tour of Tibet that starts at the border with Nepal, and travel by road to the Tibetan capital of Lhasa. Overland travel is one of the most popular ways to get to Lhasa from Nepal and includes visits to Mount Everest, Shigatse, and Gyantse Kumbum along the way. From Lhasa, you then have the choice of taking a flight out of Tibet or traveling by train from the Tibetan capital to one of seven gateway cities across China.

Route 2: Arrive in Tibet – Overland to Nepal – Flight to Bhutan

The alternative route is pretty much the same, just the other way around. You can travel to Tibet from many cities in China by air or by train. The train is fast becoming a more popular option, as it is cheaper by far despite taking anything from 22 to 55 hours to reach Lhasa.

From Lhasa, after a few days acclimatizing in the stunning capital, you will travel overland to Kathmandu in Nepal, traveling via Gyantse, Shigatse, and Mount Everest, as well as many other places across the plateau. After crossing the border at Gyirong Port, you will get the bus to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, and begin your tour of Nepal. Nepal is well-known for its hiking trails in the Himalayas, especially around the areas of Mount Everest and the Annapurna Range.

Once you are done with touring Nepal and have seen the sights of the exotic city of Kathmandu, it is then off to the Tribhuvan International Airport to get the 1-hour 15-minute flight to Bhutan. You will not be able to book the flight without a booked tour of Bhutan with a registered tour operator, and it is a good idea to book early to ensure you can get the dates you want.

In Bhutan, you will get to visit the most popular and interesting places the kingdom has to offer, all under the caring hands of your local Bhutanese guide. Once you are finished in Bhutan, you can get the flight out with Druk Air or Bhutan Airlines to either Nepal or any of the other four countries that are served by these two carriers.

Get these travel documents before You Go

There are several documents that you will need to obtain before you even travel from your home country. These permits passes, visas, etc., are not readily available to independent travelers and must be obtained by tour operators on your behalf before you travel.

Tibet Travel Permit

The Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) is the primary permit needed to travel to Tibet , and without it, you cannot even board the train or flight to Lhasa. The permit cannot be obtained individually, and before being applied for, you need to have booked a tour with a registered tour operator such as Tibet Vista. Once you have booked your Tibet tour with us, we can make the application for the TTP, using scanned copies of your passport and Chinese Entry Visa. Processing takes around 15-20 days, so it is best to book your tour early to avoid disappointment.

travel to nepal tibet and bhutan

Chinese Visa

The Chinese Entry Visa is a requirement for all tourists traveling to Tibet, and which visa you need depends on where you enter Tibet from. If you are traveling from mainland China, then you need to obtain the visa before you leave your home country. China does not have a Visa on Arrival service, and all visas must be issued by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in your home or resident country.

You will need to have a valid passport with two blank visa pages that are valid for at least six months from the date of travel to China, two passport-sized photos, a copy of your hotel booking reservation, a copy of your return flight booking reservation, your expected itinerary in China (do not include Tibet in your itinerary for the Chinese Entry Visa), and the fee for the visa.

The fee varied depending on your country of origin, and for citizens of the United States , it can be as high as US$ 140, while for others it can be as low as just thirty dollars.

Bhutan Visa

A visa for Bhutan cannot be obtained personally from any Bhutanese embassy around the world, and since most countries do not have a Bhutan Embassy, it is actually a good thing. To get the visa, you first have to book a tour with a registered tour operator, which can also be done through a registered and approved travel agent, such as Tibet Vista. Once your tour is booked, we can have your visa processed in Bhutan with the Bhutanese immigration department.

The visa for Bhutan is not forwarded to you, however. On approval, you will be sent a letter of Invitation from the Tourism Council of Bhutan (TCB), which you will need to book your flight and get into the country. A copy of the Letter of Invitation is sent to the two Bhutanese airlines as well, so it is not possible to book a flight unless you already have the LOI.

Once you arrive at the Paro International Airport in Bhutan, you simply need to show the Letter of invitation to the immigration officials, along with your passport. Once you have been checked against the approved database, your visa stamp will be issued into your passport, and you will get any permits your itinerary says you require and be allowed into Bhutan.

travel to nepal tibet and bhutan

Nepal Visa (on-arrival)

Nepal has a very good system for the Visa on Arrival service, which can be used by almost any nationality in the world. Once you arrive at the land border or the Tribhuvan International Airport, you can fill out the visa application form and submit it to the immigration desk, along with your passport, photos, and fee. Once approved, which normally takes around an hour to process your visa application, you will be called forward to receive your passport with visa and allowed to enter the country.

Visas to Nepal on your arrival cost 30 dollars for a multiple-entry visa for 30 days, which must be paid in one of the major international currencies , such as US Dollars, Euros, Pounds Sterling, etc. While many currencies are actually accepted, the immigration officers prefer to have US dollars, and you must have the correct amount, as change will not be given.

Money is the key factor in traveling. Travelers can enjoy a diverse traveling experience according to their money expenses. By spending a hefty amount, travelers can enjoy luxury travel. Likewise, travelers can spend a minimum/limited amount and can do budget travel. Travel is greatly impacted by money. Budget travelers’ budget is a constraint, thus they have to make adjustments to all their amenities. On the other hand, one can get diverse amenities in luxury travel with all sorts of comforts while spending a large sum of money.

Luxury Travel vs Budget Travel differences are highlighted below:

Accommodation

Comforting Accommodation is the desire of every traveler. Budget Traveler has limited access to the best accommodation. Mostly they have to stay at teahouses/guesthouses with basic facilities. Sometimes, at hostels or even in tents.

Accommodation is the prime highlight of Luxury Travel. The accommodation is top-notch with all sorts of premium and well-furnished preferred suites. Travelers can experience a Royal Life while doing Luxury Travel and spending quality time with such classy accommodations. Travelers are accommodated with all luxury under one roof such as a gym, golf club, spa, swimming pool, private butler, and many more amenities. Travelers get fully pampered and majestic treatment.

Transportation

A relaxing journey on a spacious vehicle makes a tour pleasant and comfortable. But a budget traveler has to travel in shared vehicles which may not be spacious and comfortable. Mostly they traveled through economy transportation i.e. domestic buses. In European nations, they traveled by trains paying a low price. Budget travel is mostly done when the airfare price is low or offering special schemes. Or, they travel via economy class on a plane to reach their destination.

Luxury Travel uses luxurious transportation facilities. Travelers travel in business class on an airplane. Some even go for a private helicopter or domestic flight to reach on destination quickly. Travelers all wishes for a cozy ride on a comfortable and big spacious vehicle. Under Luxury Travel, travelers get a private comfortable vehicle along with a private driver.

Food and Drinks

Budget Travel food and drinks are simple, more economical, and self-catering. Even some travelers drink and eat street foods to remain on budget. These foods are also good but budget travelers don’t get to experience exotic cuisines. Some budget travelers eat food at places offering special discounts after 9/10 pm.

The foods and drinks are exotic, hygienic, classy, nicely presented, and highly expensive in luxury travel. Travelers can experience extravagant meals which they don’t eat in their daily life. The foods and drinks are prepared in the most unusual and unique way. Travelers get the experience of trying the most delicious cuisines while doing luxury travel. They also enjoy a large buffet with varieties of exotic cuisines and drinks at their travel destinations.

Quality of Travel

In comparison to Luxury and Budget Travel, the main difference is experienced in the Quality of Travel. Luxury Budget Traveler experience a complete, comfortable, hygienic, swift & efficient service, top-notch security, full privacy, and 24-hour private services in terms of accommodation, meals, drinks, transportation, along with a personal guide and a driver. The quality of travel experience by Luxury Budget Travelers is extraordinary. While the Quality of Travel in Budget Travel is very much limited. They experience basic and simple comforts, no private services, and most adjustments and sharing in accommodation, transportation, and meals & drinks.

In a nutshell, luxury travel is all about private traveling experiences in exotic destinations with exotic cuisines, and drinks. Moreover, people widely recognize Nepal as the birthplace of Buddha or Gautama Buddha/Sakyamuni Buddha. Although Hinduism is the main religion, Tibetan Buddhism heavily influences the scriptures, ceremonies, and beliefs of Nepali Hinduism, making it an exceptionally unique version of the faith.

Bhutan, situated in the Himalayas, is one of the most distinctive and exclusive destinations in Asia, thanks to its exceptional tourism policy, which aims to protect its unspoiled environment and preserve its ancient Himalayan Kingdom's culture. As a devoutly Buddhist nation. Bhutan has a huge number of monasteries, with the Taktsang Monastery being the most remarkable one, positioned at the midpoint of a cliff, providing a breathtaking view of the Paro Valley.

Huge Price Gap for Different Choices

When it comes to planning a trip, the cost is often a crucial factor in selecting your destination. In comparison to Nepal and Bhutan, the cost of a trip to Tibet falls in the middle. However, traveling to Bhutan is significantly more expensive than traveling to Nepal. The reason for this is that Bhutan prioritizes high-value and low-impact tourism, which requires maintaining eco-friendly tourism in the kingdom, resulting in higher costs. The Minimum Daily Package fee of 200-250 dollars per person per night in Bhutan is significantly higher than the minimal budget needed for backpacking in Nepal. Due to the high cost, many travelers are unwilling to take trips to Bhutan. To learn the exact cost of your visit, please don't hesitate to consult with our affable travel consultants.

Travel information for Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet

A tour that includes Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet offers a unique opportunity to visit three distinct destinations in one trip, providing a chance to witness the best sights, experiences, and cultures of each place. The tour takes you through Kathmandu and its famous Durbar Square, Bhutan's Paro Valley, and Thimphu known as the last Shangri-La where time seems to have stood still, and Tibet where you can explore the majestic Mount Everest, the sacred Jokhang Temple, and the historic Potala Palace in Lhasa.

Planning the trip

Planning a trip to three different countries can be challenging, especially when two of the destinations, such as Bhutan and Tibet, require travelers to have guides and prearranged permits. However, using a tour operator like Tibet Vista can simplify the planning process by taking care of the necessary permits and customizing the tour to meet your individual needs and preferences. While it's possible to visit Bhutan and Tibet with local tour operators and travel independently in Nepal, it requires a lot of careful planning to coordinate all three destinations.

Required Permits and Visas

  • Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) TTP is mandatory for visitors of any nation entering or exploring Tibet. To apply for the permit, a valid passport and Chinese visa are required and they can only be obtained through authorized tour operators, not individually. It is advisable to apply for the permit 2-3 weeks prior to the trip to ensure that it arrives on time.
  • Chinese Visa All travelers are required to have a Chinese Visa to enter any region of China or Tibet. The Visa cannot obtain upon arrival, so travelers must apply for it at the Chinese Embassy in their home country before departing for China

Due to restrictions on independent travel in Bhutan, all visitors must be on a pre-arranged tour with a guide. Luxury Asia can help you with arranging your Bhutan visa and send it to you at least 3-4 weeks before your trip. However, you will have to take care of the visa arrangements for Nepal or China, depending on where you are entering the region.

When it comes to Nepal, travelers have the option to get a visa upon arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport or apply for one through the embassy or online prior to their trip. Unlike Bhutan and Tibet, Nepal does not have any restrictions on independent travel within the country. When applying for the visa, it's recommended to get a multi-entry visa as the tour will involve multiple trips to Kathmandu.

How to get there

Traveling to the Himalayas from North America or Europe is not easy, with limited direct flights. A common route is to first fly to Thailand or China. From Thailand, you can fly to Bhutan and then go through Nepal to Tibet. From China, fly into Lhasa, Tibet, and then take an overland tour to Kathmandu in Nepal, and then on to Paro, Bhutan. After Bhutan, fly to Thailand or China and return home from there.

Bhutan and Nepal have air connections, while Nepal and Tibet have both air and land connections. However, Bhutan and Tibet do not have direct air or land connections. Therefore, the tour usually takes one of two possible routes.

Starting from Bangkok, Thailand, there are two daily flights between Bangkok and Paro, Bhutan, operated by Druk Air and Bhutan Airlines. These flights typically depart in the morning, so travelers need to arrive in Bangkok the day before. American, Canadian, and most European passport holders do not need a visa for Thailand for a stay of up to 30 days.

For entering Tibet, travelers can fly in from Tribhuvan International airport in Nepal, and several major airports in China, or take the famous Train to Tibet, which departs from seven cities across China, such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu. Nepal's Tribhuvan International Airport has limited international flights, so it's best to fly to Thailand or India first and then take a connecting flight to Kathmandu. There are also flights from Lhasa to Kathmandu, as well as the recently opened border crossing from Tibet to Nepal at Gyirong Port.

Best time to go

Also, there is no direct transportation from Tibet to Bhutan. So, one must fly from Lhasa to Kathmandu, and then from Kathmandu to Paro International Airport in Bhutan.

Best Travel Seasons for Tibet Tour Via Nepal: A Guide to Planning Your Adventure

Tibet and Nepal are popular travel destinations for adventure and cultural experiences in Asia. However, their climates differ significantly, with Tibet having a high-altitude plateau sub-tropical climate, while Nepal has a more varied climate dependent on season and altitude.

For an optimal trip to Tibet, travelers should visit from April to June and September to October, avoiding the rainy season. This period offers clear skies, mild temperatures, and excellent trekking conditions. The peak period for travel is from June to October. During these months, temperatures remain moderate, with no rainfall.

Nepal’s peak travel season is from October to May, during the dry season. However, weather conditions differ based on altitude. December to March is not ideal for visiting higher altitudes of the Himalayan Mountains due to heavy snowfall and intense cold. The best times to visit are during the spring and autumn seasons.

Nepal’s monsoon season occurs from June to late September, making it less ideal for travel to southern low-altitude areas. However, the dry season presents an opportunity to explore the plains and jungles of Nepal and experience various adventure sports.

In conclusion , while Tibet and Nepal share a region, travelers should consider the best time to visit based on climate and preferences. By carefully planning and timing trips, visitors can fully enjoy the natural beauty and excitement of these unique destinations.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Lhasa

When you arrive in Lhasa in the mid-afternoon, our guide will greet you warmly with the phrase, "Tashi Delek", which means 'wish you all the best'. Your tour guide will meet you at the exit of the station, and a private car will transport you to your hotel to allow you to rest and acclimatize for the rest of the day.

Stay overnight in Lhasa.

Day 2: Lhasa tour - Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street (B)

The following day your first stop will be the world famous Potala Palace , the winter palace of the Dalai Lama. Sitting atop Moburi (Red Hill), the palace looks down on the town of Lhasa from its 3,750-meter vantage point. The temple dates back to the 7th century, and houses artifacts and works of art from throughout Tibetan History. The palace also has the gilded burial stupas of the past Dalai Lamas, and below ground lies the ancient meditation cave of the 33rd King of Tibet.

After some lunch, you will head downtown to Jokhang Temple , the primary seat of the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. It was built by the 33rd King of Tibet in 647AD, and is the spiritual center of Tibet and the holiest temple in Tibetan Buddhism. Inside sits the most precious object in the temple, a life-sized statue of Buddha Sakyamuni when he was just 12 years old. Adorned with many precious gems, this gilded statue is the most sacred object in Tibet.

Running around the temple is the famed Barkhor Street . As well as the route of the holy kora, or reli-gious circumambulation, it is also the site of many sellers where you can buy authentic souvenirs from across the region. You can join the pilgrims on their clockwise walk around the temple.

Potala Palace, the religious center of Lhasa

Day 3: Lhasa tour - Drepung Monastery, Sera Monastery(B)

The next morning you will leave early for a trip outside Lhasa, first to Drepung Monastery , one of the Great Three monasteries of the Gelugpa sect. Sitting at the foot of Gambo Utse, 5 kilometers outside Lhasa, it was founded by Jamyang Choge, one of the disciples of Tsong Khapa, in 1416. The Ganden Potrang, sited in the southwest corner of the monastery, was the former residence of the Dalai Lama, until the move to the Potala Palace.

In the afternoon you will travel back across the city to the northern suburbs, to visit Sera Monastery , another of the Great Three monasteries. Founded in 1419, the name, Sera, means "wild rose" in Tibetan, and was named because of the roses that were in bloom on the hill behind it when it was built. The main attraction of the monastery is the colorful and animated debating of the monks, held under the trees in the debating field every afternoon. Definitely something to watch, even if you do not understand what is said.

Drepung Monastery was one of the “three greet” Gelug monasteries of Tibet.

Day 4: Fly from Lhasa to Kathmandu/transfer to hotel

In the morning, you will take the direct flight from Gonggar international Airport, in Lhasa to Tribhuvan International Airport, in Kathmandu. On arrival, your guide will collect you from the airport and take you to your hotel, where you can spend the rest of the day relaxing, or take in the local sights.

Stay overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 5: Day tour in Kathmandu: Kathmandu City, Swayambhunath and Pantan City (B)

The day starts with a tour of Kathmandu City, and takes in the famous Kathmandu Durbar Square . The most famous square in the city, the Durbar Square is the Royal Palace square in the city, and is surrounded by ancient buildings from the early 16th century. The magnificent architecture, exquisite decorations, and the intensity of historical items gives a great insight into Nepali culture.

You then continue the tour with a visit to the Swayambhunath Pagoda , which is one of the oldest Buddhist sites in Nepal. Swayambhunath is a huge golden stupa festooned with prayer flags that flutter in the breeze, on a hill that overlooks the entire city. Then it is on to Patan City , the second largest city in the Kathmandu Valley area. Patan City has one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Nepal that dates back to the 12th century, and is a great place to explore the Buddhist culture of Nepal.

Kathmandu’s Durbar Square is one of three durbar squares in the Kathmandu Valley.

Day 6: Day tour in Kathmandu: Pashupatinath, Boudhanath and Bhaktapur City

You will also get to go further afield in Nepal, to visit the ancient Hindu temple of Pashupatinath , and Boudhanath , one of the largest stupas in Asia, and a focal point for Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal. Set on the banks of the Baghmati River, Pashupatinath is one of Nepal’s famous UNESCO sites, and the sunset over the temple roofs is spectacular.

Another great place to see is Boudhanath, located on the ancient trade route. It is a place of meditation and part of the spiritual journey around Kathmandu. With one of the largest stupas in the world, it has been the site of many Tibetan prayers over the centuries. Bhaktapur Durbar Square is the last place to visit for the day, with its pagoda and shikhara temples strewn around the royal palace. The square really highlights the ancient building arts of Nepal.

Pashupatinath

Day 7: Arrival in Paro and Get Transferred to Thimpu (2300m) (2hrs’drive)

Taking the direct flight from Tribhuvan International Airport to Paro International Airport. Welcome to Bhutan, the land of the “Thunder Dragon”. We’re sure you must get amazed at the stunning vista of majestic Himalayas, esp. the lofty Mt. Jumolhari and Jichu Drake Peaks during your flight from Kathmandu. However, they are only a small appetizer. Upon your arrival in Paro internatonal airport, our Bhutan guide and driver will meet you at the airport.

Later, we will visit the Kyichu Lhakhang (also known as Kyerchu Temple), the oldest and most beautiful temple in Bhutan. Surrounded by the fields, flowers, and hills, Kyichu Lhakhang is home to the eight-year-old Buddha statue of Sakyamuni, historic relics, elaborate paintings, and numerous Buddhist scriptures, etc. And Later explore the Paro Rinpung Dzong . Located at the suburb of Paro City, Rinpung Dzong is a fortress built in the 17th Century to protect Paro valley, which offers you picturesque scenery and a sense of inner peace.

In the evening, we will head to Thimphu , the capital of Bhutan.

Stay overnight in Thimphu.

Kyichu Lhakhang

Day 8: Sightseeing in Thimpu and Travel to Punakha (1250m) (3-4hrs’drive) (B)

As the capital city of Bhutan, Thimpu is devoid of stereotyped skyscrapers and huge traffic. Bhutan vs Nepal vs Tibet: which is better for tourists, Nepal, Bhutan, or Tibet?

No documents found.

Bhutan, Nepal, and Tibet are three popular destinations in the Himalayas in Southeast Asia. Lying in the same region of the long mountain range, these three unique and stunning destinations are hugely popular locations for tourists from around the world, and see thousands of visitors each throughout the year. With stunning landscapes, high Himalayan Mountains, and amazing unique cultures in all three destinations, it can be hard to decide which to go to, especially if you are unable to combine all three together. So which of these spectacular destinations is the best to visit? That really depends on what you want from the trip and what you expect from each place individually.

Best for Everest Summit and Kailash Kora Pilgrimage - Tibet

When it comes to the famous mountains of Mount Everest and Mount Kailash, there is nowhere better than Tibet for stunning views and amazing experiences. Mount Everest, which lies directly on the border between Nepal and Tibet, has two base camps, though it is only from the northern base camp in Tibet that you can get a view of the summit of the world’s highest mountain. When it comes to views of the summit of Mount Everest, the better views are normally found in Tibet rather than in Nepal, which has views from further away from the summit than those at EBC in Tibet. And when it comes to traveling to the closest place to view the mountain, the roads from Lhasa, the Tibetan capital, to EBC are a much better option for tourists than the 12-day trek you need to accomplish to reach the closest viewing point in Nepal.

Mount Kailash Kora

Mount Kailash , in the western Ngari Prefecture of Tibet, is the most sacred mountain for four separate religions, including Buddhism and Hinduism, and lies wholly in Tibet, some distance from the border with Nepal. The location of the famous Kailash Kora, the ultimate pilgrimage destination in Asia, Mount Kailash is one of the most outstanding tourist and pilgrimage attractions in the Himalayas. The tourist trek around the mountain, which follows the pilgrimage kora route, is a three-day adventure the like of which can be found nowhere else in the world. A spiritual journey of self-discovery, even for those non-religious trekkers, this ultimate hike at high altitudes is an experience that will stay with you for a lifetime. >> Join our 15 Days Lhasa Everest Kailash tour to capture the superb views of the Mountains

Best for Independent Travelers and Budget Trekkers - Nepal

If you are traveling on a budget, or are preferring to make your own arrangements for touring around the Himalayas, then Nepal is the best option for you. Unlike Bhutan and Tibet, independent travel is permitted throughout Nepal, and there are no restrictions on where you can go or how you can get there. Traveling around Nepal was originally done mostly by backpackers, exploring the exotic locations of this previously untraveled destination by foot and by local bus, traveling on bumpy roads in hot and arduous conditions. While the buses are generally a little better these days, the roads are still pretty bumpy in most places, but the freedom of being able to go where you please when you want is a freedom that many still yearn for when traveling the Himalayas.

The long trek to EBC in Nepal

Nepal is also a haven for those trekkers that are traveling on a budget, as trekking in Nepal is not as costly as trekking in Bhutan and Tibet, which require you to be on a pre-arranged tour and with a guide present at all times. Such additions add up to the expenses when trekking, and in Nepal, you are not required to have any of them. Being able to travel around freely means you can arrive at your trekking destination at a low cost, and while there are certain permit requirements for trekking in Nepal, they are not expensive and are easily affordable for most budget travelers. There is also no requirement to hire expensive guides and porters for the treks, and you can even manage the long trek to EBC in Nepal without needing a guide, as the trail is well marked and there are teahouses all along the route.

Best for Exploring the Hidden Kingdom in the Himalayas - Bhutan

Bhutan has long been an isolated country in the Himalayas, cut off from the rest of the world by its remote location for centuries. Protected from the north by the range of the Himalayas, and around the other sides by the vast distances of the Indian states of Northeast India, Bhutan has remained isolated to such a degree that they have managed to retain their traditional values and culture without interference from outside influences that would have changed the culture and the people.

Exploring the hidden Himalayan kingdom - Bhutan

Bhutan is still a relatively isolated and hidden kingdom in the Himalayas, and is the last true bastion of ancient traditions in Southeast Asia. Often considered to be the last Shangri-La - the isolated valley of the legendary book, Lost Horizon - Bhutan still protects its traditions, values, and culture by limiting access to the country for tourists and requiring them to be on pre-arranged Bhutan tours which have pre-set itineraries, thus restricting where tourists can go and maintaining the traditional culture and infrastructure of this ancient Buddhist kingdom.

Best for Epic Lhasa Kathmandu Overland Expedition - Tibet and Nepal

When it comes to overland adventures, there is none as spectacular as the amazing journey across the Tibetan plateau from Lhasa to Kathmandu. An expedition of epic proportions, an overland tour that starts in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa and ends in the exotic Nepali capital of Kathmandu is one of the best and most exciting journeys on the planet.

Enjoy the panoramic view of the Himalayas in Gawula Pass

Traveling across the vast Tibetan plateau, through towns and cities where the unique Tibetan culture remains untarnished by external influences and where Tibetan monks walk the streets carefully, this is the best way to explore the twin capitals of these two popular Himalayan destinations. An expansive journey, you will travel to ancient Buddhist monasteries, pass spectacular lakes and pristine glaciers, crest the world’s highest passes through the Transhimalaya, and even stop off to take a look at the world’s highest mountain. When it comes to exploring overland journeys, there is no better adventure than the tour from Lhasa to Kathmandu in Nepal .

Best for Himalayan Trekking - Nepal and Bhutan

Trekking in the Himalayas is one of the most popular activities of tourists that head for these three unique destinations in Southeast Asia and when it comes to mountain treks and amazing hikes through the largest and highest mountain range on the planet, there are no better places than Nepal and Bhutan.

With Nepal lying on the southern edge of the higher western Himalayas, and Bhutan lying on the southern side of the eastern Himalayas, both destinations have an abundance of amazing Himalayan treks that make them ideal locations for avid mountain trekkers.

Nepal lies in the area of the western Himalayas which has the higher mountains of the range, and eight of the 14 highest mountains in the world lie in this landlocked Himalayan country. From Mount Everest and Cho Oyu to Manaslu, Annapurna, and many others, Nepal has some of the best mountain treks in the world . Small wonder it is often referred to as the mountain trekking capital of the world.

Tiger's Nest Monastery in Bhutan

Bhutan may not be the mountain trekking capital that Nepal has become, but its unique form of mountain trekking in the Himalayas does make it a popular destination for avid hikers. This unique destination offers some of the best treks in the Himalayas, from the stunning Jomolhari Trek to the awesome treks around the mountains of the Bumthang District in central Bhutan. And for those that want to try and tackle the ultimate mountain trek, the world-famous Snowman trek is rated as the hardest trek in the world, stretching across almost the entire northern edge of Bhutan and taking around a month to complete.

Why not visit Tibet Nepal Bhutan altogether?

With these three amazing destinations lying close together in the Himalayas, and with a variety of different aspects that are particular to each destination, the ultimate trip would be to visit all three together. With the ability to start in Tibet and travel overland to Nepal, explore the stunning mountain treks of the country, and then take the flight from Kathmandu to Paro for exploring the amazing mountains and Buddhist Dzongs of the last Himalayan Kingdom, a combined trip to Tibet, Nepal, and Bhutan is easily possible, and can be arranged without too much trouble.

With Bhutan and Tibet requiring tourists to be on pre-arranged tours, the arrangement and planning of traveling to these two destination is easy, and with Nepal being a simple place to visit for almost anyone, there is no reason why these three locations cannot be part of one giant tour of the best places in the mighty Himalayas.

Deciding on whether to visit Bhutan, Nepal, or Tibet can be a problem, as these three stunning destinations all have amazing aspects to them that you cannot find anywhere else in the world. And while it can be hard to choose between the three locations, you are best deciding on a single destination based on what you want to do on your holiday. However, if you are unable to come to a decision, a trip to Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan together would be the trip of a lifetime.
