After exiting, follow the signs to Soldier Field. Keep in mind that traffic can be heavy on game days or during events, so allow extra time for your commute.

The Chicago Bears 2022-2023 season begins Sunday at home -- Soldier Field, along Chicago's lakefront. But physically getting to the Chicago Park District owned venue is a complicated playbook of sorts.

Yes, parking a vehicle is possible, if money is no object. But there are less expensive options for wallet-conscious fans, in the form of trains and buses and rideshares.

Chicago Bears season ticket holders have access to the best parking lots on Museum Campus . However, if you're not one of those fans, you may be looking for a 'Single Game Pass' to display in your vehicle. Those passes are good for the Grant Park North Garage, and the Millennium Garage (enter off of Columbus and Monroe). The advantage of these garages? A free shuttle bus straight to the stadium. Soldier Field. Those lots start at $42.

Other nearby garages, including at McCormick Place, Grant Park and more have parking available as well, but without the perk of a shuttle. Prices vary. Here's more information .

How About Someone Else Driving You?

Attention rideshare customers: There are only a couple of drop-off points, and one pick-up location after the game, at East Balbo Drive and South Columbus Drive.

Those turnarounds are highly managed by traffic management. And, you can expect to walk a bit to get to your driver, or to the gate.

In terms of timing, here's what the team says: "Taxi cabs, limousines, and buses will not be allowed to enter Soldier Field Campus starting 90 minutes after kick-off. The campus will re-open 1 hour after the game is over."

Your Best Bet? Public Transit

The best financial bargain is the CTA .

Bears fans can take the Red, Orange, and Green Line trains to the Roosevelt Station. It's a hefty walk from there -- but game goers can transfer to the #146 bus at the Roosevelt Station to get a lot closer.

The CTA also works with Metra Commuter Rail on the #128 Solider Field Express bus. That bus picks up Metra riders at the Ogilvie Transportation Center and Union Stations, taking those customers to the venue with no stops.

The #128 starts running 2 hours before game time.

If you're coming to the game from the suburbs, the PACE Suburban Bus System runs a 'Soldier Field Express Route' from different Suburban pick-up spots to the Museum Campus.

Finally, Northwest Indiana fans can use the South Shore Line to the McCormick Station. Soldier Field from there is a rather quick walk.

The Chicago Bears kick off their 2022 regular season against the San Francisco 49ers at Soldier Field on Sunday, Sept. 11.

This is the Bears' first game back at Soldier Field since last season, and if you're planning to attend a game in person, it will take some preparation to maximize your fan experience.

Plus, Soldier Field and the Bears have made plenty of headlines lately, as the team considers a potential move to the suburb of Arlington Heights .

A proposed plan released by the team this week included renderings and more information on the Bears' vision for a potential stadium district at the site of the former Arlington International Racecourse that includes a hotel, restaurants, offices, parks, open space and a dome stadium, giving the team the opportunity to host big events like The Super Bowl and the Final Four College Basketball Tournament.

Meanwhile, the city of Chicago and Mayor Lori Lightfoot haven't given up on keeping the team in Chicago at Soldier Field , and the Bears aren't officially leaving just yet.

Here's what to know before heading to Soldier Field, from parking to the stadium's announcement about how to pay for concessions this year.

Cash-only parking lots are run on a first come, first served basis and are not guaranteed to all patrons who desire to park there. Adler Planetarium and Burnham Harbor are the only cash-only lots at the stadium. Prices of parking in these lots are subject to change. 

All lots around Soldier Field open four hours before the start of each home game. All fans must depart the parking lot two hours after the game. Gates open to the stadium two hours before kickoff. 

Can I tailgate in the parking lots?

Tailgating is allowed in the parking lots, if patrons follow the rules and regulations .

The South Lot, North Parking Garage and Adler Planetarium Lot — and the top deck of the Waldron Deck garage are allowed for open-air tailgating. McCormick Place 31st Street Parking Lot will also be available, with a shuttle transporting fans to the game from Lot B. 

Private spaces can be rented to host tailgating events with friends and family. People who do not have tickets to the game are not permitted to tailgate and can be requested to leave by authorities if the person cannot provide valid ticketing to the game. 

How can I get to the stadium via public transit?

The common way to get to Soldier Field via public transit is through the Roosevelt CTA train stop. Roosevelt holds red, orange and green line trains. The station is about a 20-25 minute walk to the stadium. 

By bus, the No. 128 bus goes directly to Soldier Field from the Union Station and Ogilvie Transportation Center. The No. 146 Inner Drive/Michigan Express can be used from Roosevelt station to get to the stadium. 

What are the bag policies for entering Soldier Field?

For every Bears game, bags must pass the NFL's clear bag policy. Based on Soldier Field’s website, here are the standards for bags cleared for entry at Soldier Field . 

• Bags that are clear plastic and do not exceed 12"x6"x12"
• One-gallon clear plastic freezer bags (Ziploc bag or similar)
• Small clutch bags, which cannot exceed 4.5" x 6.5" in size, with or without a handle or strap can be taken into the stadium with one of the clear plastic bags.

Some examples of bags not allowed into Soldier Field include: backpacks, leather purses, briefcases, fanny packs, coolers, computer bags, camera bags, etc. 

The Bears are going completely "cashless" this season

The team announced on Thursday they will be going completely cashless for this season. 

“Visitors can expect to exclusively use a credit, debit or pre-paid card or mobile payment for all purchases in the facility, including all Bears Pro Shop retail locations, concessions stands and all roaming food and beverage vendors,” via the team's announcement. 

Remember to bring a form of payment to the games that isn't cash to purchase items from inside the stadium.

Within Chicago’s city limits, fans can take the Soldier Field Express bus, CTA #128. It picks up passengers at both Ogilvie Transportation Center and Union Station. Another option is the #130 bus, which drops off passengers just a short walk from Soldier Field at the Museum Campus. Most of the parking areas in the Museum Campus are only available to Bears season ticket holders. Public parking garages are typically a mile or so away from the stadium. Depending on the distance, prices range from about $15 to as much as $85, with the average lot space costing about $35 for the duration of the game.

Soldier Field visitor guide: everything you need to know

First built in 1924, Soldier Field has been the home of the NFL's Chicago Bears since the 1970s and has been an iconic fixture along Chicago’s lakefront. While it’s primarily the home of the Chicago Bears, the stadium welcomed the Major League Soccer club Chicago Fire FC to the lakefront. Soldier Field frequently hosts major concerts like The Rolling Stones , Beyonce , Metallica, and more. 

While Soldier Field’s history stands out among the NFL’s other stadiums, the place looks anything but historic after its remodeling some 20 years ago. The stadium's unique (and controversial with locals) architectural design combines its historic neoclassical façade and colonnades with a modern “semi-dome” that rests over the older structure. 

Nestled between Chicago’s bustling downtown “Loop” and the city’s gorgeous lakefront, Soldier Field’s superb location makes it an incredible place to see a show or game. The expansive greenspace around the stadium also features museums, paths, and parks to enjoy (when the weather cooperates). 

If you’re heading to the game from the airport or find yourself with a bag larger than Soldier Field’s bag policy allows (see below), you’ll need a place to stash your belongings while you cheer on the Bears. The best luggage storage service in Chicago is easily Bounce, which has dozens of locations around the city , including near the best attractions like Soldier Field. Don’t get stuck with your bags before the game!

Soldier Field bag policy 

All events at Soldier Field don’t allow bags that exceed 4.5" x 6.5" (with or without a handle or strap). The rule of thumb is that anything larger than a clutch bag will not be permitted inside Soldier Field. That includes briefcases, backpacks, and, of course, luggage of any kind. 

There are plenty of luggage storage locations available in the area if your bags don’t adhere to the Soldier Field bag policy, especially in the Loop.

Soldier Field food policy

As per the Soldier Field food policy, fans are allowed a single 12"x6"x12" one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (such as a Ziploc bag) filled with snacks. There are no bottles allowed into the stadium. 

These rules do not apply to tailgating, which is a very popular pastime at Soldier Field. While there are rules regarding tailgating in the parking lots, alcohol consumption, grilling, and other activities are allowed (if fans are of legal drinking age). 

The concessions on offer at Soldier Field have fallen behind its neighbors, Wrigley Field, Guaranteed Rate Field , and the United Center, all of which have partnered with local businesses to bring authentic flavors to their fans. Still, you’ll find perfectly serviceable stadium food onsite, including limited options for vegetarians. Because of its proximity to downtown Chicago, there are plenty of amazing dining options to try out before heading to Soldier Field. 

Soldier Field transportation

Soldier Field is located just south of downtown in the Museum Campus . It’s relatively easy to reach, but you’ll want to plan ahead to make sure you get to your seat in time for kickoff. Here are options to use to get to Soldier Field:

Public transportation

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has a thorough public transportation system consisting of ‘L’ Trains and public buses. Roosevelt Station is located nearby and serves the Red, Orange, and Green lines, with transfers to other routes nearby in the Loop. The station is about a 20-minute walk to Soldier Field. It’s important to note that these trains fill up on gameday, so you’ll want to leave plenty of time to get to the stadium. 

If you’re driving into the city, the stadium is conveniently located near highways I-55 and the scenic Lake Shore Drive, but there will be traffic (and lots of it). There are parking lots available near Soldier Field, and the game day tailgating is a fun part of attending a Bears game. It’s advisable to research and arrange parking ahead of time.

Taxis, Ubers, and Lyft

Services like Uber and Lyft are widely available in Chicago and can drop you off near the stadium. Taxis are common in hotspots like the Loop but are harder to plan for. There are designated ride-share pickup and drop-off points as well as a taxi stand, but this can be inconvenient with the larger crowds.

Chicago has a vast network of bike lanes, and bike-sharing programs like Divvy make it easy for short one-way trips. Soldier Field offers bike racks, and the surrounding lakefront is amazing to cycle through during summer and fall.  

If you’re staying in a hotel downtown, walking to Soldier Field may be an option, but the walk can be pretty long, and the weather coming from the lakefront can make it uncomfortable. Still, the museum campus is delightful during the summer and absolutely worth exploring.

Soldier Field camera policy

The Soldier Field camera policy is fairly lenient in that cameras and video recorders are allowed in, but the lenses cannot exceed 6" when fully extended. Tripods and other equipment aren’t allowed in the stadium.

Permitted items .

Banners, flags, and signs are permitted so long as they do not include offensive language or imagery. This designation is up to the discretion of park officials. Foam fingers and other fun items are allowed, so long as they will not be intrusive to other fans. 

There is a box office where Will Call pickups and ticket issues can be worked out with stadium officials. The stadium is open two hours prior to kickoff or the start of a performance. All patrons are required to go through security screening upon entry. 

Like other stadiums, Soldier Field’s concessions and merchandise have recently gone completely cashless. Credit cards, mobile payments, and online ordering have all been implemented and must be used according to Soldier Field policies.  

Chicago’s Soldier Field is one of the bucket-list sports stadiums to see a game at. If you’re heading into town for a game, the fun doesn’t have to end at the final whistle. Perhaps the weather isn’t cooperating for your concert or game, there’s still plenty to do around Chicago . If you’re spending a weekend in the city around the event, you can fit plenty of bucket-list attractions into a short trip .

Best Local Transportation To Get To Soldier Field

For locals traveling to Soldier Field for tailgating purposes, it's important to utilize the public transportation system in Chicago. While driving to the stadium from Chicago's neighboring suburbs can sometimes be tricky due to construction delays and general traffic, local residents around Soldier Field have more options for getting to the stadium. Whether it's coming from a residence or wanting to know how to reach the stadium from the allotted tailgating parking lots, local transportation services can accommodate without much difficulty. Before heading to the game, make sure you know what your route will be to make your tailgating outing go as smoothly as possible.

CTA Trains   There are 11 Metra Commuter Trains that run from the Chicagoland suburbs into downtown Chicago. Of these rail lines, there are four downtown stations: LaSalle Street Station, Union Station, Ogilvie Transportation Center and Millennium Station. The CTA "El" Trains have the red, orange and green lines that stop at the Roosevelt Station. The Roosevelt Station is roughly half a mile west of Soldier Field, so it's the main stop for those looking to get to the game. CTA Buses   From Ogilvie Transportation Center or Union Station, catch the #128 express bus. For those at Union Station, the #128 Soldier Field Express Bus boards on Jackson, east of Canal Street. For those at OTC, buses board on Madison Street. Both stations offer the express bus two hours before and 30 minutes after kickoff. El train users can take the #146 Inner Drive/Michigan Express bus. You can catch the #146 on Jackson and State, which is about half-mile walk, but will take you towards the Museum Campus lot.

Taxi   For local residents willing to take a taxi in to Soldier Field, there are only a few areas that taxi drop-offs are allowed: the McFetridge Drive turnaround on Lake Shore Drive, the southbound exit on 18 th  Street, the northbound entrance ramp on 18 th  Street and the staging area on 11 th  Street and Michigan Avenue. However, taxis are prohibited to enter the Soldier Field Campus after 90 minutes after kickoff. Those looking for taxi pickups after the game can use the staging area, the East Monroe Street Garage or the Museum Campus. However, those using the Museum Campus must wait at least one hour after the game ends in order to utilize taxi service.

Red ,  Green  and  Orange  Lines The stadium is a few blocks east of the Roosevelt stops on the CTA  Red ,  Orange  and  Green  Lines (about a 15 minute walk or a short bus ride).

You can walk from the ‘L’ stops by heading east on Roosevelt Road from State Street until you cross Columbus. To your left will be a walkway that gently slopes down through the Museum Campus to a pedestrian underpass to get to the other side of Lake Shore Drive.  Then, turn right to head south past the Field Museum and on to Soldier Field.

To get to the  Roosevelt stop  from the north (including downtown) and West Side, take a Red Line train toward 95th, a Green Line train toward Ashland/63rd or Cottage Grove or an Orange Line train toward Midway. From the south and southwest, take a Red Line train toward Howard, an Orange Line train toward the Loop or a Green Line train toward Harlem/Lake.

You can also use CTA bus  #128 Soldier Field Express , which serve Union Station and the Ogilvie Transportation Center (Metra). From downtown, you can use the  #146 Inner Drive/Michigan Express , all of which connect with Red, Orange and Green Lines on Roosevelt. All of these bus routes stop in front of the stadium.

Chicago Blackhawks hockey and Chicago Bulls basketball

Blue Line The stadium is just a few blocks north of the  Illinois Medical District stop  on the CTA  Blue Line . The shortest walk is by exiting the station to Damen Avenue (western-most exit) and walk north on Damen to Madison.

To get to the Illinois Medical District stop from the west (including the far West Side and the communities of Forest Park and Oak Park), take a Blue Line train toward O’Hare. From the east and north (including downtown, the Northwest Side, northwest suburbs east of O'Hare and directly from O'Hare Airport), take a Blue Line train toward Forest Park.

Green  and  Pink  Lines The stadium is two blocks south and three blocks west of the  Ashland/Lake stop  on the CTA  Green  and  Pink  Lines.

To get to the Ashland/Lake station from the west, take a Green Line train toward Ashland/63rd or Cottage Grove, or a Pink Line train toward the Loop. From the east (including downtown or the South Side portions of the Green Line), take a Green Line train toward Harlem/Lake or a Pink Line train toward 54th/Cermak.

You can also use CTA buses  #9 Ashland ,  #19 United Center Express ,  #20 Madison ,  #50 Damen  or  #126 Jackson  to get to, or within a few blocks of, the stadium.

Chicago Cubs baseball

Wrigley field.

Red Line The ballpark is just a half block west of the  Addison stop  on the CTA  Red Line .

To get to the Addison stop from the south (including downtown), take a Red Line train toward Howard. From the north, take a Red Line train toward 95th.

The ballpark is also just a couple of blocks south of the  Sheridan  stop on the CTA  Red Line .

Purple Line Express

Before weekday night games, rather than run express from Howard to Belmont, regular Loop-bound  Purple Line Express  trains will make an additional stop at Addison.  

Linden-bound Purple Line Express trains will not make special stops at Addison. Purple Line Express service operates only during weekday rush periods. For service back north after the game, use the Red Line from Addison or Sheridan (where you can transfer to Purple Line local service and Yellow Line trains at  Howard ).

You can also use CTA bus routes  #8 Halsted ,  #22 Clark  or  #152 Addison  (connects to the  Brown  and  Blue  lines) to get to, or within a few blocks of, Wrigley Field.

Chicago White Sox baseball

Guaranteed rate field.

Red Line The ballpark is just a block west of the  Sox-35th stop  on the CTA  Red Line .

To get to the Sox-35th stop from the north (including downtown), take a Red Line train toward 95th/Dan Ryan. From the south, take a Red Line train toward Howard.

(During rush hours, certain Red Line trains run to Ashland/63rd and can get you to the ballpark via the 35th-Bronzeville-IIT stop on the Green Line.)

Green Line The ballpark is just three blocks west of the  35th-Bronzeville-IIT stop  on the CTA  Green Line .

To get to the 35th-Bronzeville-IIT stop from the north (including downtown and the West Side), take a Green Line train toward Ashland/63rd or Cottage Grove. From the south, take a Green Line train toward Harlem/Lake.

You can also use CTA buses  #1 Bronzeville/Union Station ,  #4 Cottage Grove ,  #24 Wentworth ,  #29 State ,  #35 35th  (connects with  Orange Line  and Green Line),  #39 Pershing  (connects with Orange Line and Green Line) and  #44 Wallace/Racine  to get to, or within a few blocks of, the ballpark.

DePaul Blue Demons basketball

Green Line The station is just 3 blocks east of the Cermak-McCormick Place station on the Green Line. Exit toward Cermak Rd from the station and walk east.

To reach Cermak-McCormick Place from downtown Chicago, the West Side of Chicago, Oak Park or River Forest, take a Green Line train toward either Ashland/63rd or Cottage Grove. From the South Side of Chicago, board a Green Line train toward Harlem.

Red Line The station is about 5 blocks (a 12-15 minute walk) east of the Cermak-Chinatown station on the Red Line. Exit toward Cermak from the station platform and walk east. You can also transfer to #21 Cermak buses toward Mercy Hospital from this station.

To reach Cermak-Chinatown from the North Side and downtown Chicago, take a Red Line train toward 95th/Dan Ryan. From the South Side, take a Red Line train toward Howard to reach Cermak-Chinatown.

Wintrust Arena is also reachable by  #1 Bronzeville/Union Station , #3 King Drive ,  #4 Cottage Grove , #21 Cermak and #29 State buses.

Northwestern Wildcats football

Purple Line  / from Evanston or Wilmette The stadium is just west of the 'L' on Central Street, with the main entrance on the west side at Central/Ashland.

From Purple Line stations elsewhere in Evanston, including Downtown Evanston, take a Purple Line train toward Linden and exit at Central. From Linden, take a train toward Howard or the Loop and exit at Central.

Purple Line Express / from Chicago During weekday rush hours, Purple Line service is extended south of Howard Street, near the border between Chicago and Evanston to/from downtown Chicago, via express. You can ride a Purple Line Express train toward Linden from downtown directly to Central in Evanston.

At all other times from Chicago (midday, nights, weekends, holidays, etc.), use Red Line  local service to Howard where you can change for a Purple Line shuttle train to Linden for continuing service that will take you to the Central station for Ryan Field.

Ryan Field is also served by CTA  #201 Central/Ridge  buses.

Driving from I-55

• Take I-55, the Stevenson Expressway, northbound to Lake Shore Drive/Highway 41 North.
• Take LSD north to the 18th Drive exit.

Driving from I-290

• Take I-290, the Eisenhower Expressway, east to Congress Parkway.
• Take Congress Parkway to Columbus Drive.
• Turn right and take Columbus Drive south to the 18th Drive exit.

Driving from I-90/94

• Take I-90/94, the Dan Ryan Expressway, north to the Lake Shore Drive/22nd street exit.
• Stay to the right and exit to LSD.
• Take LSD/Highway 41 north to the 18th Drive exit.

Driving from I-94

• Take I-94, the Kennedy Expressway, south to the Congress Parkway exit.

Guests of the Museum Campus may park in several open lots on non-event days. The North Parking Garage, East Museum Lot and Adler Planetarium Lot are all open. No overnight guest parking is permitted.

Event Parking

There are several options for parking around Soldier Field. The North Garage, Waldron Deck and the South Parking Lot are reserved for those with season coupon parking for Bears Event Days. All other events are open to cash parking and pre-purchased parking at www.SoldierFieldParking.com .

Parking lots will open approximately four (4) hours before kickoff for Bears and Fire games or before the event begins. Parking lots will close one (1) hour after the conclusion of the event for night events. Rates vary for all events. Please check the event listing under “Events” pages to parking rates for each event.

Fans without full Bears season coupons can park at the Southwest Parking Facilities at McCormick Place Lot B or in the Millennium Park Garage and utilize the free shuttles to the stadium. The parking shuttles only operate on Chicago Bears game days and the drop-off and pick-up area is located on 18th St., just west of Lake Shore Drive. Both shuttles continue until 2 hours after the game.

There is also cash parking available at McCormick Place Lot C - Lakeside and 18th. Shows at McCormick Place may limit the amount of cash spaces available on gameday.

Bear game day parking coupons must be visibly displayed on the rear-view mirror of all vehicles. Coupons are required to park in the North Garage, Waldron Deck and South Lot. Cash will NOT be accepted at these parking entrances. For cash parking, go to the Adler Planetarium or Burnham Harbor lots.

Taxi & Ride Share – Major Events

Ride Share drop off is located at the 18th Drive turnaround located just west of the exit ramp at 18th Drive. Ride Share pick-up is located at Columbus and Balbo just North of the stadium.

Directional Apps

It is encouraged that fans do not use directional apps like Google Maps, Waze or Apple Maps when approaching the stadium on event day as they do not take into account special road closures, traffic patterns and access routes allocated to specific carparks. In the end, using these apps will result in a longer commute.

Soldier field is easily accessible by the CTA Red, Green, and Orange Lines at the Roosevelt Station (3/4 mile walk to stadium entrance) CTA bus route #146 Inner Drive/Michigan Express also provides a connection from Roosevelt Station to the stadium entrance on McFetridge Drive From Memorial Day to Labor Day, CTA bus route #130 Museum Campus provides service from downtown Metra stations to Soldier Field, Adler Planetarium, and Northerly Island

For fans coming from the South Side or south suburbs, Metra’s Soldier Field stop is the 18th Street Station, a short walking distance from Soldier Field. Please visit www.Metra.com for train times and stations.

Pick up & Drop Off

ADA Drop-Off & Parking

Disabled patrons may be dropped off on the circle drive (east side of the stadium) on Museum Campus Drive outside Gate 14. An ADA placard or license plate must be visible to the police and parking attendants, and the person to whom the placard or license plate is registered must be an occupant of the vehicle in order to access the Gate 14 drop-off. Due to traffic congestion after events, please do not attempt to return with your vehicle to the Gate 14 drop-off; you may take the courtesy cart from the Gate 14 drop-off to your vehicle. All parking lots on campus have ample ADA parking spots.

Party Buses & Limousines

Limousines will not be allowed to enter Soldier Field Campus starting 90 minutes after kick/main act/event start until one hour after the game is over. Violators are subject to ticketing, towing and prosecution.

Buses may drop-off and pick-up guests on Columbus Drive, north of Balbo. Buses cannot drop off or pick up guests on any other area roadway.

Oversized Vehicles / Limousines: Cash parking is located at the Adler Planetarium Lot, on a first-come, first-served basis for $160 . Oversized vehicles (bus, camper or any vehicle that does not fit inside the lines of one designated regular-size parking space) can be reserved at the Adler Lot for $160 plus a $5 transaction fee by visiting www.SoldierFieldParking.com . When available, buses and RVs can also park at the 31st St. McCormick Place Lot B for $85 drive-up, $90 prepaid. Rates subject to change.

Take Metra to the Game

Pro and college sports are back, and Metra can make sure you don’t miss a minute of the action. Whether it’s football, hockey or hoops, here’s how Metra can get you to the game.

Getting to Soldier Field is easy. If you’re coming from the south, take the Metra Electric Line and exit at the 18th Street Station, just a short distance from the stadium. Fans coming into downtown can catch the No. 128 Soldier Field Express bus at either Ogilvie Transportation Center or Union Station. The bus starts two hours before the game and runs for an hour afterward. Bear Down!

To catch the Bulls or Blackhawks, catch the No. 19 United Center Express Bus  that connects with our Millennium Station, Ogilvie Center and Union Station. Bus service begins 90 minutes before game time and runs for up to an hour after the game.

To see Big 10 football and men’s and women’s basketball, take the Union Pacific North line up to Northwestern’s Ryan Field and Welsh-Ryan Arena. Both are just a short walk from our Evanston Central Street station. Go Cats!

Chicago Bears fans garbed in jerseys and other orange and blue memorabilia flocked to Soldier Field in anticipation of Sunday afternoon’s Week 1 matchup against the Green Bay Packers. For some, the trip required crossing continents.

Arturo Rivas, 31, traveled from Spain with his parents for the game — his first visit to the United States. A lifelong football fan who grew up playing the “Madden NFL” video game and watching the Bears with his dad, Rivas got to the stadium about three hours early to tailgate and drink beer. He called Chicago “one of the top three cities” in the country, saying the Field Museum and Lincoln Park Zoo were two of his other favorite attractions so far.

Despite last year’s disappointing 3-14 record, Rivas is hopeful the Bears will be playoff contenders this season. He’s particularly looking to third-year quarterback Justin Fields to improve offensive productivity. It’s the team’s second season under coach Matt Eberflus.

“There’s a lot of talk that they finish at the bottom of the NFC, but I don’t think so,” he said. “I think they could battle for playoffs.”

Rivas wasn’t the only international fan at the game. Sabrina Jones, Kyla Reis and Courtney Hiscox, a trio from Alberta, Canada, attend a baseball and football game in a new city every year for a girls trip. It’s their fifth year of the tradition, and they said they’ve already gone to two Cubs games and are planning to catch a White Sox game before they leave.

They aren’t die-hard Bears fans yet, they said, but they think the city is a great place for live sports.

“We usually buy a shirt when we get here, and support the team while we’re here,” Jones, 42, said.

Of course, many avid local fans secured seats for the much-anticipated rivalry game. The Bears and Packers, the two oldest teams in continuous operation in the National Football League, have a rivalry spanning more than 200 regular season games and two playoff contests. The Packers hold a slight lead in the series.

Juan Salazar, who helps run the group First and Ten Tailgate, started tailgating at 7 a.m. with his younger brother. He said it’s all part of being a dedicated fan. This year, he’s expecting at least nine or 10 wins for the team and a playoff berth.

“Right now marks the change in the Bears-Packers rivalry,” Salazar said.

Salazar took his outfit seriously. The 44-year-old East Chicago resident wore a face covering emblazoned with the Bears logo and a jersey covered with colorful patches. One labeled him as a “superfan” and another had a block of cheese — a symbol for Green Bay — crossed out. He even had blue and orange sneakers.

As the Bears search for a new stadium site, albeit with few conclusive decisions, Salazar said he has “mixed emotions.” On one hand, he said Soldier Field “will always be home,” but he also would like a bigger stadium with more parking for tailgating.

“We definitely do need an upgrade,” he said. “The Bears do need a new area where parking will allow us to tailgate and we don’t have to find a separate location a 30-minute walk away from here.”

For Mike and Chrissey Thompson, a couple from Milwaukee, the rivalry hits close to home. Chrissey, who was born in Illinois, is rooting for the Bears, while Mike showed up in a Packers T-shirt. He said he wants the Bears to keep losing this season, adding that Sunday’s game was a big test for the Packers and quarterback Jordan Love after future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers was traded.

“I’ve never been to (Soldier Field) before, so I’m excited,” Chrissey Thompson, 44, said. “I root for the Packers if they’re not playing the Bears. If they’re playing the Bears, not happening.”
