Trek Madone 5.9 SL “Project One” custom road bike

full OCLV-110 carbon fiber  frame + Race XXX Lite carbon fork = an EXTREMELY light frameset

frame size = 60cm

This bike was a special order from the Trek Factory Racing / Project One custom paint program–which added about $600 to the original $5000+ MSRP on this model.

The 2005 / 2006 / 2007 framesets for this model (Madone 5.2/5.5/5.9 “SL”) were all basically identical… only the factory paint schemes changed from year to year.  What differentiated the models (5.2/5.5/5.9) was the type of carbon fiber used in the frame (OCLV 120 or OCLV110)–and the “build kit” that was used; this includes the groupset / gruppo (Ultegra or Dura Ace), the wheels, the seatpost, the stem, the handlebars, etc (Race / Race Lite / Race X Lite / Race XXX Lite).  So, once you strip all the parts off, the the geometry and construction of the frames are identical.

When we bought the bike some knucklehead had built up the frame with some really shitty / random components.  And, not knowing these frames the way WE know these frames–from buying / selling–and riding–dozens of them over the years, they probably had no idea what they had.  So we had the bike boxed up and shipped down to us (from the midwest) and stripped it down to the frame and started over with top of the line Dura Ace parts from our inventory.  The wheels are basically brand new “take offs” from a 2017 or 2018 Trek Domane 5.9 that a friend of mine bought and immediately put $2000 carbon fiber wheels on.   About a year before that we sold him a REALLY nice Madone 6.9 SSL Pro–but that’s a straight up racing bike–Tour de France level–and he was just getting into cycling–and he really doesn’t ride that much, that far, or that fast.  We tried to talk him out of that bike–it was just too much bike for him–and the frame (58cm) was a bit long for his height–but he fell in love with the bike–and with the idea of being a bad ass cyclist–and (as a doctor) he has plenty of money… so, he bought it anyway.

After spending a fair amount of money on custom fitting and changing out a few parts on that bike–he could never quite get comfortable on it–but he had definitely been bitten by the biking bug–so he went into the local Trek dealer and bought himself a brand new Domane 5.9–in a 56cm–and sold the 6.9 SSL back to us–along with the take-off wheels from the 5.9 Domane… which we decided to use on this bike.  (The original factory wheels on this bike would have been Bontrager Race X Lite’s… which are decent wheels… if your bike is under warranty… and you’re under 175 lbs.  But to get those wheels super light, they have to shave every spare gram of material off the hubs and rims with CNC machines.  This obviously makes the wheels much more prone to failure since thinner / lighter = weaker.  And since they also reduce the number of spokes on those wheels to the bare minimum (typically 16 to 20 in the front and 18 to 24 in the back), the main points of failure are the spoke holes in the hubs and the spoke holes in the rims… because those have to be under tremendous tension to keep the wheel true.  (The more points of contact you have on the hubs / rims (i.e. the more spokes), the more evenly the stress is distributed around the wheel.)  If you bought the bike new and your wheel(s) fail within a year… two years… three years… etc–as long as they weren’t involved in a crash–Trek would generally replace them for free.  But if you’re not the original / registered owner–you’re out of luck.

The Bontrager Paradigm Comp TLR wheels that came on the new Domane are heavier than the Race X Lite’s… but also STRONGER.  And they are WIDER–to accomodate 25mm and 28mm tires more effectively–since that’s been the trend the past 10 yrs or so… wider rims and wider tires–even on racing bikes.  Also, the “TLR” in the name = “tubeless ready”… meaning you can opt for a tubeless set up on these rims if you prefer… particularly useful if you are reading in an area or conditions that are prone to causing puncture flats.  And if you DO run them tubeless… you’ll also bring the total weight down to pretty close to the factory Race X Lite wheels–which require tubes.  And both wider rims / bigger tires and tubeless set ups allow you to run lower air PRESSURE… which also results in a more comfortable ride–and better corning–since you have more rubber on the road.

The bottom bracket, chain, cables, housings, drop bars and bar wrap are all brand new.

For tires we special ordered a gorgeous pair of Continental Grand Prix 4 Season “Black Edition” 25mm’s that look amazing on the bike.  We’d never used this particular model before–but I ran across them online a while back and remembered them when I was ordering misc bits and pieces for this build.

Same with the bar wrap– SupaKaz Sticky Kush Starfade Bling Platinum (two-tone black & silver)–which was also special ordered just for this build.

As is, this bike is in excellent condition.  A bit of typical wear from normal use (a scuff here… a small rock chip in the paint there).    Perfectly tuned.  Wheels dead true.

From the factory these are very light bikes.  +/- 16 lbs stock.  Currently closer to 17 lbs–which is still a very light road bike relatively speaking.  But could easily be close to 15 lbs with some tweaks to the build kit and some lighter wheels.

The “flames” motif was first used by Trek in 2005 on Lance Armstrong’s special Discovery Team bike for the Tour de France (which he won… but was later stripped of for doping).

That bike got so much press at the time that Trek decided to duplicate the colorway for a special edition bike in 2006 called the SSLX… which–at $10,000–was the most expensive production bike ever at that time–and of course, Trek’s most expensive bike to that date.

Since then, the “flames” have been available from Trek / Project One in a variety of color options and variations that continues to this day.  This particular bike has a more subtle / muted version that is a combination of dark gray / charcoal / silver / white–all metallics / pearls that shimmer in the sunlight.  It’s really hard to capture in photos.

Great price for a bike with great Ultegra components. Frame takes a beating on the rough roads of PA - Very little play or vibration. Needs upgrade of stem, seatpost, handlebars, wheelset to lighten up considerably.

Geometry, handling and stiffness

Being a recreational rider first and foremost, I find this to be an excellent bike. Unlike many others I have also been happy with the Bontrager components although some them may contribute to the overall weight which I belive is a litte above average at this level. Still, the stiffness of the frame and the overall handling make this a very nice bike both for climbing and flat rides while it also feels comfortable after several hours of riding. If some of the componentry is replaced (which could be done fairly cheaply), you have in my opinion a bike just short of a top level racing bike although at an affordable price. Lastly, I replaced my Trek 2300 after one season in order to get a Madone basically because I wanted the full racing geometry. I have not regretted in for one second so far.

this is my first roadie, but working in a bike shop has given me a chance to demo alot of bikes and the new '08 madones, would have gotten a new one but the cost is pretty high for being 17 on a mechanic salery. but for the money i love my 5.0, sprinting and climbing is phenomenal, love the ultegra groupo. wish wheelset was a little, and higher end, want to upgrade to ksyrium elite. but by far best bang for the buck. great bike to get into, perfectly after being on a mtn. bike since i was ten

Great bike. I didn't want to seped so much but after riding this bike I realized that you get what you pay for. I really enjoy it. For $2000 it was a good deal and the bike is just amazing.

If not a lance fan it may sway your choice from buying a really great bike. Saddle Me Traditional straight top tube mightn't suit everyone. Tyres a bit slippery in wet. Painted finish could be better

What a great bike. Was initially looking at a Scott, but the equivalent was an additional $800. This came up on sale as a run out model when the new Madone was being launched. Best time to buy! The bike would have been good enough to win a Tour on a few years ago. Love the geometry, as soon as you get rolling you know it means business. Handling is point and shoot. Power transmission is great. Everything you put in to it you get a reaction from. I like the Bonty selection.This would have been pro level gear only a few years ago. The bike is really light, feels strong,nimble and forgiving.The only thing that limits you spending more time on it,is your schedule. Otherwise ride it all day, every day. I can't imagine the next level[5.5]to be signicantly better, unless you want to get into racing.Probably overkill for the average rec. cyclist. The bike feels like it wants you give it your very best every time you ride it, so keep an eye on your HR monitor! Comming from down tube shifters, i find the Ultegra STI amazing, seamless shifting, quiet and reliable. Select, and bang in it goes, even on standing accellerations.

Good frame, brand, and component package for the price.

Good bike overall. However(!), my left non-drive chainstay pulled out 1cm from the dropout after 4 weeks of riding- not good. The bike was warrantied, but Jax replaced the complete bike when the process was taking so long.

Good light bike, good carbon frame-MADE IN THE USA,good components (full ultegra), good geometry, and reasonably spec'd bike at a great price. I was looking for a bike I would not HAVE to upgrade parts on over a year. This is the lowest of the made in USA Madones. It rides well, did my first century on it, it's a bike I would recommend to others.

I`ve recently purchesed the trek madone 5.0, mostly because it was on sale far a great price, 1500 euro(aprox 2000$), what could beat that offer for a new bike!?!The first thing that striked me while riding it was, the cornering capability, most bikes i`ve ridden had problems at high speed turns. The geometry of madone frames is great indeed.The frame is very stiff in power transfer. The only weak part of the bike are the Bontrager cheap low end, wheels and parts (got rid of them, I`m using fsa carbon parts)

This is a great bike for the price. The geometry is full race and it lives up to the task. Tough to beat this price for a full carbon full Ultegra machine!!! Which is why I purchased it. This is my first road bike since 97' and I didn't feel like building one from the ground up and you can't beat this for the cost. Handling is superb since I got a complete retro-fit right away. it is very easy to lighten it up with a few simple upgrades. It absorbs road vibrations extremely well and accelerates fassst! so stiffness is great!

After much research I chose the Trek Madone 5.0 because of the quality and price. This is the first carbon frame that was stiff enough for my weight 250lbs. I have tried Felt, Bianchi, and Kona. To me this bike had the best ride quality and stiffness. It comes with full Ultegra drive train, Bontrager Race wheels, Bontrager Race bars, stem, seatpost and seat. The only parts I changed off the bat where the tires, and saddle. It's perfect for my commute and weekend rides. Also they had this model on sale with a program called hit the road it was like $300.00 off.

The growth in suburban house prices in 2021 can be as high as 15%. This prognosis was voiced by the participants of Moscow’s real estate market. Housing near Moscow has already gone up in value by 7%, and before the end of the year, this number is quite likely to rise by another 2–3%. The pandemic has changed the trends on the suburban real estate market – the current demand for detached houses is noticeably higher than before the global outbreak of Covid-19, and this naturally influences the cost of residential homes, say the experts. There you will find everything one requires for a comfortable life, at the price of 300 to 500 thousand US dollars for a residential home.
