18 Best Things To Do in Jamaica

Jamaica is a picturesque destination with sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters and breathtaking mountain views surrounded by an abundance of flora and fauna. But, there is more to this Caribbean destination than meets the eye.

The island has an

Dunn's River Falls and Park (Ocho Rios) Dunn's River Falls and Park (Ocho Rios)

If you're staying in Ocho Rios or just visiting Jamaica for the day from a cruise ship , travelers insist you allot a couple of hours to climb the Dunn's River Falls. You can take a guided climb of the waterfall, hike a trail alongside it or just recline and relax at the base of the falls.

Vacationers say that climbing along the rocks to the top of the falls isn't rigorous, but it can be slippery. Recent visitors said you can keep your footing by wearing water shoes. Given that you'll be splashed, then soaked by the cascading water on the ascent – and some say it's a bit dangerous – it's best if you leave your young kids (or any vacation buddies who aren't strong swimmers) at the foot of the falls. The attraction recommends allotting about 60 minutes to climb the falls.

Seven Mile Beach (Negril) Seven Mile Beach (Negril) free

Crystal-blue waters and coral sands await you at this western beach in Negril. As its name suggests, Seven Mile has plenty of space for you to find a spot, but you'll share the area with a few adults-only resorts and those who like to sunbathe in the nude. The sandy spread becomes a popular party spot when the sun goes down.

Recent travelers said Seven Mile features the clearest water they've ever seen, with others calling it perfect. Still, similar to a lot of Jamaican beaches, Seven Mile sometimes has vendors who can often be persistent in hopes of selling everything from crafts to beer to fresh lobster. A simple "no, thank you" will often suffice, but don't be surprised if a vendor is unrelenting.

Blue Hole (Ocho Rios) Blue Hole (Ocho Rios)

Named for its deep turquoise, crystal-clear water, the Blue Hole is located a little over a mile from the heart of Ocho Rios. Past visitors have said a trip to this natural wonder is a must-do experience.

Nature lovers may enjoy the breathtaking views or the hikes to visit the various waterfalls found throughout the site. Travelers who want to get their adrenaline pumping can swing like Tarzan into the waters below or cliff dive.

Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park

Along Jamaica's eastern edge, you'll find the majestic Blue and John Crow Mountains, the fountainhead of the fragrant Blue Mountain Coffee and a scenic masterpiece for nature lovers. In fact, in 2015 it was named a UNESCO World Heritage site. Most vacationers' experience with the Blue Mountains is limited to sipping the coffee, but if you have the time and the stamina, journey to the area to behold the mountains or to hike through them.

Hiking and camping in Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park is strenuous and not for the faint of heart. Most hikers prefer to climb the mountain early to catch the sunrise. The most challenging part of the trail to the top, known as Jacob's Ladder, is the narrowest and steepest of the hike. The peak of the range rises to an altitude of 7,402 feet, and the higher you climb, the craggier the terrain and the cooler and more humid the weather. Remember to dress in layers for your hike, and bring plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Green Grotto Caves Green Grotto Caves

Named for the green algae that covers its walls, the Green Grotto is a natural wonder. Located between Ocho Rios and Montego Bay near Discovery Bay, the caves are filled with stalactites and stalagmites.

The caves are believed to be the dwellings of the first inhabitants of the island – Arawak Indians also known as the Tainos. The grounds also served as a hiding place for colonial-era Spaniards, runaway enslaved people and smugglers. In recent years, the caves were even a nightclub.

Boston Beach (Port Antonio) Boston Beach (Port Antonio)

Sitting less than 10 miles east of Port Antonio's town center, Boston Beach is known for its clear waters' surfer-friendly waves and the shore's soft, powder-white sands. But even more prominently, Boston Beach is renowned for its delicious Jamaican eats. This beach claims to be the birthplace of jerk seasoning, so come hungry and ready to taste-test at nearby eateries, which feature jerk foods.

The water here can get a bit rough, which is why it's a favored spot among surfers. But for that reason, it's not the best beach for young children.

The lagoon is temporarily closed for rehabilitation. It is expected to reopen June 1.

Travelers recommend this central Port Antonio lagoon for its breathtaking water and surrounding gardens. Like its name suggests, the Blue Lagoon is a vibrant cobalt color that's worth snapping a few pictures and swimming a few laps around. The water is cool, very deep (approximately 200 feet, according to some reports) and a mix of saltwater and freshwater fed by a nearby mineral spring. Throughout the day as the angle of the sun changes, the water appears to be different shades of blue. You'll find the lagoon about 5 miles east of Port Antonio.

Treasure Beach Treasure Beach free

Located on the southern coast of Jamaica, Treasure Beach provides a photogenic backdrop featuring serene crystal-clear waters, rocky shorelines and fresh seafood. Past beachgoers say it's a hidden treasure.

The six-mile stretch of land comprises of five bays (Billy's, Frenchman's, Calabash, Fort Charles and Great Bay) and four public beaches (Calabash Bay, Old Wharf, Great Bay and Frenchman's). While the area may not be plentiful in amenities as other beaches in Jamaica, the area is ideal for swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing. There are plenty of eateries located around the area.

Doctor's Cave Beach (Montego Bay) Doctor's Cave Beach (Montego Bay)

Doctor's Cave is one of the most visited beaches in Montego Bay. It does charge an entry fee, which can serve as a deterrent for some. Many, however, are willing to fork over the dollars to enter Doctor's Cave, play in the quiet waves, appreciate the safety of lifeguards and have ready access to the available water sports, changing rooms and beach bars. The beach's popularity means that you're likely to encounter crowds (especially on days when cruise ships are in Montego Bay's port) and high food prices.

A trip to Doctor's Cave means you'll have the opportunity to rent equipment for snorkeling, kayaking, riding water scooters and other aquatic activities. Umbrellas, towels and beach chairs are also available for rent. Some travelers were upset by all the nickeling and diming, even though they admit to having a great experience.

White Witch Golf Course (Montego Bay) White Witch Golf Course (Montego Bay)

The 18 holes of the White Witch Golf Course sprawl across 200 acres of the Rose Hall Estate . Designed by revered course architects Robert von Hagge and Rick Baril, White Witch is praised for its stunning landscape and helpful staff. In fact, 16 of its holes feature ocean views. If you're a beginner or moderate golfer, White Witch will likely be challenging for you -- its hilly terrain has been described as a "roller coaster" by some travelers.

Some golfers recommend scheduling early tee times to beat the heat. The golf course does not normally have tee times beyond 1 p.m. Travelers should note the Rose Hall golf courses (White Witch Golf Course and Cinnamon Hill Golf Course) switch annually on seasonal closures. Check the website to learn more.

Croydon in the Mountains Croydon in the Mountains

Located on the foothills of the Catadupa Mountains, the Croydon Plantation is surrounded by breathtaking views of the Jamaican countryside and an abundance of fruit and coffee beans grow on the land.

The plantation was also the birthplace of one of Jamaica's heroes: Samuel Sharpe. Sharpe led the 1831 Slave Rebellion. This revolt eventually led to the 1834 Abolition Bill, passed by the British Parliament. Slavery was abolished in 1838.

Take some time out of your sunning and swimming to pay homage to a musical legend. Located in Kingston, this museum occupies the former home of Bob Marley. Inside, you'll see personal artifacts, Marley's personal recording studio and his bedroom, among other highlights. Be sure to snap a few photos by the surrounding fence, decked out in Rastafarian "ice, gold and green" (or, red, yellow and green).

Keep in mind that this site can get very busy, which made the experience disappointing for some. Still, others said their tour guides made Marley and his music come alive.

Tryall Club Golf Course skirts the coastline of Montego Bay. Recent guests agreed that it is one of the most challenging courses in the area. This course is an 18-hole, par-71 championship green designed by architect Ralph Plummer. Recent travelers recognize it for its beauty alongside the Caribbean Sea. Some also highlight the fantastic golf clinics that the course offers.

As evidence of the green's notable landscape and challenging holes, Tryall has been host to several golf championships, including The Johnnie Walker World Championship and the Mazda Championship.

YS Falls YS Falls

YS Falls is a scenic natural attraction located in southwest Jamaica. The area touts a seven-tiered waterfall surrounded by lush gardens and natural swimming pools. The estate where the falls are located on was once a working sugarcane farm. When sugar production dwindled, the land was turned into a stud farm – raising and breeding thoroughbreds, which remains today.

In 1992, the estate opened the falls as a tourist attraction. Guests can climb the stone staircase to the main waterfall or rope swing into one of the natural pools created by the cascading waters. YS suggests travelers bring water shoes because the rocks can be slippery. For adventure-seekers, explore the YS Falls by zip lining 40 feet above the area.

Rose Hall Great House Rose Hall Great House

The Rose Hall Great House is a restored 18th-century historic dwelling located in Montego Bay. The house is just one of the many attractions sprawled across the nearly 6,660-acre former plantation. It's here you'll also find the White Witch Golf Course .

The historic property has an intriguing backstory. Rose Hall was once the home of Annee Palmer, given the nickname "White Witch of Rose Hall." Local lore rumors Palmer killed three of her husbands and took several enslaved lovers, one of which may have betrayed and ultimately killed her. The fabricated story was enshrined in Herbert Delisser's book "White Witch of Rose Hall," but it hasn't deterred tourgoers from learning more about the great house. In fact, past visitors say the tour is intriguing and educational.

Appleton Estate Appleton Estate

Jamaican rum production began in the 1650s when the English fermented sugar cane to create the versatile liquor. Appleton Estate began distilling rum about 100 years after the first rum production. Located in Siloah, the company chose the Nassau Valley area for production because of its karst landscape, which includes limestone hill formations, caves and underground water sources. What does the landscape have to do with rum production? Everything. The water that flows through this area is filtered by limestone, which helps to soften the liquid. The filtered water plus molasses used in fermentation helps create the unique flavor found in Jamaican rum. Today, the company produces about 10 million liters of rum annually.

Travelers can tour the distillery through the Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience. Named after Joy Spence – Appleton's master blender and the first female master blender in the spirits industry – the 75- to 90-minute tour takes guests through the rum-making process. There is also a rum tasting included during the visit. A restaurant and gift shop are also on-site. Past guests said the tour was informative and fun.

Trench Town Culture Yard Trench Town Culture Yard

"Bob Marley did not make Trench Town, Trench Town made Bob Marley." That is the motto of the community of Trench Town, located in Kingston. The more than seven-block area is considered the birthplace of reggae music.

To deal with the rise in squatter settlements around Kingston, Trench Town was built as a public housing project in the 1940s by the British as a way to solve the problem, but that wasn't the case. The poor living conditions of the neighborhood helped birth the sounds of reggae and ska, as musicians who lived in the community (including Marley, Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh) wrote and sang about these circumstances. Music lovers will recognize the area mentioned in the songs "Trench Town Rock" and "No Woman, No Cry."

Luminous Lagoon Luminous Lagoon

The Luminous Lagoon is a one-of-a-kind natural phenomenon. Located in Falmouth (home to one of the island's cruise ports ), the lagoon once served as a dock for English ships carrying Jamaican exports such as sugar and rum.

Today, the marshlands are famous for millions of dinoflagellates: microscopic organisms that glow in its waters. The saltwater from the Caribbean Sea and the freshwater from the Martha Brae River combine in the lagoon to create an environment where the dinoflagellates thrive to produce a spectacular nighttime light show. It is one of four places in the world where this bioluminescence occurs in the water and is reported to be the largest of them all.

The 8 Best Places to Visit in Jamaica

trip in jamaica

Stuart Stevenson Photography / Getty

One of the largest islands in the Caribbean, Jamaica is renowned for its rich cultural history and diverse natural beauty. The island is the homeland of jerk chicken, Blue Mountains, and Bob Marley, and it is an unrivaled destination for visitors looking to experience Caribbean culture. There’s no shortage of activities for the adventurous traveler when visiting Jamaica, and navigating where to visit during your trip can be overwhelming. From the beaches of Montego Bay to the waterfalls of Ocho Rios , read on for the eight best places to visit during your next vacation to Jamaica.

Douglas Pearson

Whether you’re interested in sunbathing, snorkeling, or scuba diving, there’s no better place to appreciate Jamaica’s famous coastline than Negril in western Jamaica . For active travelers, we suggest exploring the town by going horseback riding , a popular activity on the island that allows equestrians to trot or gallop along the coastline. For travelers of all stripes, consider a visit to Rick’s Café for cocktails at sunset—and perhaps a refreshing cliffside dip—to commemorate your Jamaican vacation.

During the sugar rush of the 1700s, the "Paris of the Indies" was considered the most cosmopolitan city in the west. Though the sugar rush is over, the historic and ornate architecture remains, earning Falmouth its designation as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations, as well as a Jamaican National Monument. Sign up for a walking tour of the historic city, and opt for a Falmouth Swamp Safari to acquaint yourself with the wilder environs of the region—which you may recognize as the setting for the classic James Bond film “Live and Let Die.”

Montego Bay

Jio Mei Zuo M / Eyem / Getty

There's more to Montego Bay than gloriously picturesque beaches. Visit the Montego Bay Cultural Center (home of the National Museum West and the National Gallery West) in Sam Sharpe Square for a taste of the region’s history. When it comes to the beach, consider seaside horseback riding with Chukka Caribbean Adventures or dining at sea on the HouseBoat Grill . Travelers looking for luxury have come to the right place, as Half Moon Resort—located on the former Rose Hall Sugar Plantation—and Round Hill Hotel and Villas are sure to satisfy even the most discerning of travelers. Visitors should spend an evening dining al fresco at The Sugar Mill .

Cockpit Country

Christopher P Baker / Getty

Spreading across three parishes in Jamaica, Cockpit Country was an 18 th -century Maroon stronghold; due to its hilly, inhospitable environs, Africans who escaped slavery were able to successfully evade capture by the British. The establishments they settled, including Accompong Village, are rich with history and open to tours. Explore Rockspring Cave with Cockpit Country Adventure Tours , drink rum at Appleton Estate , and order jerk chicken at Good Hope . A sugar estate established in 1774, Good Hope has since been turned into a luxury attraction, complete with an infinity pool overlooking a breathtaking vista of the Jamaican countryside.

Douglas Pearson / Getty

The Jamaican capital of Kingston is one of the most well-known destinations on the island, though it’s less frequently visited than Montego Bay. Pay your respects to Jamaican legends by dining at Usain Bolt’s Tracks and Records (the city houses the first outpost of the popular chain) and touring the Bob Marley Museum . Spend an afternoon exploring the celebrated heritage site of Devon House before heading to the historic Strawberry Hill resort in the Blue Mountains. Speaking of those iconic Blue Mountains, the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park is located eight miles north of Kingston and is a majestic site just waiting to be explored. Whether you are into drinking coffee, biking, or hiking, the view from the top of the Blue Mountain range is not to be missed.

Port Antonio

 Rick Elkins

Because Port Antonio is the birthplace of river rafting in Jamaica, we recommend signing up for a traditional bamboo rafting tour. The city also offers a lot for travelers looking to laze beside the country’s abundant ocean and rivers. Frenchman’s Cove Beach is routinely considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Active vacationers can go snorkeling at the Blue Lagoon, or search for rare fossils in Nonsuch Caves, home to ancient stalagmites and Taino relics. Additionally, travelers should also do a Port Antonio Walking Tour to explore such historic landmarks as the 18 th- century British cannons of Fort George and the still-majestic Folly Ruins, the site of a turn-of-the-century 60-room mansion.

Radius Images

Only nine miles away from Port Antonio is one of the most beautiful beaches in the entire nation: Boston Beach. Boston has more to offer than just sandy coastline, though: The region is considered to be the birthplace of the jerk cooking technique that is so popular throughout the country. Pay a visit to Boston Jerk Center to sample jerk in all of its forms (including chicken, of course) and sign up for a Country-Style Community Tour. These tours, which include farm visits, homestays, and other culturally immersive programs, are offered in small villages throughout Jamaica.

TripSavvy / Anna Haines

Head to Ocho Rios to visit such lush and spectacular natural environs as the Dunn’s River Falls . Adventurous travelers will enjoy climbing these breathtaking waterfalls, as well as bobsledding at Mystic Mountain . Opt for some delicious, home-style cooking at  Miss T’s Kitchen before boarding your return flight home.

Getting to Jamaica

You can get to Jamaica by air or by sea. It all depends on where you’re coming from and which method you prefer.

If you’re arriving by water and not on a cruise ship, you’re probably one of the lucky sailors and yachters who are in Jamaica for a week or more.

If you’re arriving by plane, there are three well-run international airports on the island. These are found in:

  • Montego Bay – MBJ – Donald Sangster International
  • Kingston – KIN – Norman Manley Internationalx
  • Ocho Rios – OCJ – Ian Fleming International

Montego Bay is the largest airport and gets the most flights. This is where most visitors to the island will land.

Click here to check airfare prices and schedules. Book as early as you can, because fares increase as the date of departure approaches.

Where to stay for this Jamaican itinerary

Jamaica’s rhythm pulses through your soul from the moment you touch down. Lush rainforests sway to reggae beats, turquoise waters whisper secrets to hidden coves, and friendly locals greet you with warm smiles. To experience it all, base yourself in Montego Bay. The city is lively and energetic, and it’s also Jamaica’s tourism capital.

Montego Bay boasts every type of accommodation, from vacation rentals to hostels, hotels and all-inclusive couples resorts.

These spots come highly recommended:

  • $$$ — Round Hill Hotel & Villas
  • $$$ — Half Moon Resort
  • $$ — Castlevue B&B
  • $ — Seacastles apartments

ⓘ PRO TIP: If you’re looking for other places to stay in Jamaica, don’t waste time searching different booking sites. Use Trivago’s price comparison tool to find the best value for your money.

Getting around Jamaica

One week in Jamaica is going to see you traveling between the cities and smaller towns quite a bit. The locations are a bit far to walk, so here are various transport options.

Buses

Buses in Jamaica offer an affordable way to get from point A to B. They’re often crowded, and can sometimes be used by pickpockets, but they provide a real look into local Jamaican life.

If you’re going to take public transport, be sure to check schedules and maps. It can be a bit disorientating once you’re on the bus so plan your routes beforehand and know where you’re going.

Taxis are a great way to get around the island. They’re quite affordable and are driven by knowledgeable locals who know the roads.

Just be sure that you only hire licensed taxis. These are recognizable by their red license plates, which all have ‘PP’ on them.

If you’d prefer to drive yourself, you can easily rent a car on the island. Just be warned that driving in Jamaica can be tricky, as locals drive quite aggressively, and they often speed. Worse, the roads are not well-marked and some are poorly maintained.

ⓘ TIP: If you plan on enjoying a sunset cocktail, know that the legal alcohol limit is extremely low. If you want to avoid any hassle, be sure to have a designated driver.

Jamaica in 7 days

Here’s a suggested one-week itinerary for your time on the island. We left it loose, so you have plenty of time to see what you want at each place. Keeping to a strict schedule goes against our idea of a vacation!

To save time and hassle, you’ll stay in Montego Bay for the week and see the rest of Jamaica on day trips. There’s no reason to change hotels if you don’t have to, right?

Day 1: Montego Bay

It make sense to explore what’s around your home base before heading too far out. Here are some things to do in Montego Bay:

Tour the city

You might visit Montego Bay Cultural Center, which has unique old slavery items, go shopping, try the local cuisine, or just check out area viewpoints and attractions like Rose Hall Great House. If you’re in the market for souvenirs, you can get great deals on Jamaican coffee, rum, and other novelty items here as well.

Head to the beach

There are some great beaches in the city. Top options include Doctor’s Cave Beach , Tropical Bliss, and One Man Beach.

Do some snorkeling

Montego Bay is the best place to go diving or snorkeling . Marvel at the blue lagoons and the world of natural wonders beneath the surface.

Enjoy the nightlife

This is what Montego Bay is best known for. Go out, have a drink or two, and mingle with the locals.

Day 2: Negril

A scenic 1.5-hour drive from Montego Bay will see you in Negril, a coastal town best known for its stunning ocean waters. It’s the perfect place to head out to sea on a boat tour and enjoy the ocean air.

Walk down Seven Mile Beach

Seven Mile Beach offers miles and miles of beautiful views, pristine sand and clear, turquoise waters. You can grab a Jamaican patty or ice cream from one of the local vendors and enjoy a slow stroll along the water.

Take a glass-bottom boat tour

Take advantage of Negril’s clear and calm waters and head out on a transparent glass-bottom boat. You’ll catch sights of the fish and coral beneath the surface, which really is a sight to behold.

Head to Rick’s Cafe

Located atop a 35-foot cliffon the far west end of Jamaica, Rick’s Cafe is one of Negril’s best-loved spots. This longtime bar/eatery serves Caribbean grub and cocktails, plus a pool and live band music to accompany your meal.

Rick’s Cafe has some of the most breathtaking views of the Caribbean, especially at sunset. But if you’re there earlier in the day and you’re brave enough, you can join the hordes of adventure-seekers as they jump off the restaurant’s cliff face into the warm waters.

Day 3: Nine Mile

The birthplace of Bob Marley, Nine Mile is around 2 hours from Montego Bay. It’s a small town, though, so you can easily explore it in a few hours.

Small vendor cart saying Joe's shell shack

Bob Marley Museum

The Bob Marley Museum is the main attraction in the tiny village, and it welcomes thousands of tourists each year. This is one of the most important historical places to see in Jamaica, and the tour guide inside the museum will share all of their knowledge about Marley and his legacy.

For the rest of your trip, simply enjoy the town and its sights. The drive is picturesque and the village offers a quaint look into Jamaican history.

Day 4: Kingston

Jamaica’s capital city is about 2.5 hours from Montego Bay, and it’s a must on any Jamaica itinerary.

See the museums and galleries

There are quite a few galleries and museums in the city, so make a list and explore Kingston’s highlights. The Bob Marley Museum, Devon House , and the National Gallery of Jamaica are some unmissable options.

Rockfort Mineral Bath

The mineral baths on the outskirts of Kingston offer a revitalizing visit. Spend up to 40 minutes in one of the several pools and see for yourself if the rumors of healing powers are true.

Learn about pirates at Port Royal

An hour from Kingston, you can visit this tiny port. There’s a museum and other landmarks that show why this town was once known as ‘ the wickedest city in the world ’. As well as Jamaican naval history. See cannons, fort remains, and many items recovered from the sea.

Day 5: Ocho Rios & Dunn’s River Falls

Ocho Rios (“eight rivers”) is arguably the most beautiful place in Jamaica. There’s a ton to do here, so it’s a good thing the drive will only take about 1.5 hours.

tourists climbing Dunn's river falls

Walk the town

Once you’ve arrived, spend an hour or two seeing what the town has to offer. There’s an art gallery, a craft market, and many other local gems. You can also visit one of the city’s beaches for some sea air.

Lunch at Scotchie’s

This spot is famous for its jerk chicken, making it the obvious choice for a lunch break while exploring Ocho Rios.

Turtle River Falls

This 15-acre tropical garden offers a welcome spot to catch your breath and take in the serenity around you. Enjoy the waterfalls, tropical swimming pool, and variety of tropical bird species found in this area.

Dunn’s River Falls

On your way back to Montego Bay, we’d highly recommend a stop off at Dunn’s River Falls to enjoy the view and natural beauty. There is an entrance fee, but it’s worth it.

Day 6: Discovery Bay

Believed by some to be the place that Christopher Columbus first landed, Discovery Bay is just an hour’s drive from Montego Bay.

Columbus Park

This open-air museum is a must-see, especially for history and archaeological enthusiasts. Spend some time wandering through the historic items, such as a cannon, an old water wheel, and a corn-husker.

Puerto Seco beach park

Take some time out of sightseeing to enjoy this fun beach park. This is great if you have kids, or if you’re a big kid yourself. There’s an inflatable water park, clean pools, and ample space to laze in the sun.

Green Grotto Caves

Located between Discovery Bay and Runaway Bay, this underground site offers a geological and historical lesson. The caves were used by the Spaniards to hide from the invading English, but today they’re a popular site for tourists.

Day 7: Falmouth

Drive about 40 minutes from your accommodation, and you’ll reach Falmouth, a picturesque port town located between Ocho Rios and Montego Bay.

small island of the coast of falmouth

Heritage Walk

The best way to get a feel for the town is to go on a heritage walk. Book a local for a guided walk, or head out on your own with Google Maps as your guide. Find historic landmarks and points of interest, and learn more about the town.

Lunch and shopping at the port

One of the cleanest ports in Jamaica, the historic port of Falmouth deserves a couple of hours’ worth of exploring. Browse the shops, find souvenirs to take home, and then take your pick of restaurants to sit down and enjoy a traditional meal.

Optional: Martha’s Brae Bamboo Raft Trip

Before heading back, take a 10-minute trip to Martha Brae Rafting Village . Here, you’ll be taken on a bamboo raft down a calm river. The ride is about 1 hour long, and you’ll hear the story of The Legend of the Martha Brae as you go.

More Jamaica day trips

If you’re looking for more easy and relaxing places to spend the day, here are a couple of day trip options from Montego Bay.

man on the street in a jamaican hat

Boat to Booby Island

Just a short boat trip from Negril, this is a popular spot for locals and visitors alike. Come here to enjoy the waters, go snorkeling, or have a lobster barbeque. This is probably best done with a group of locals who can show you around.

Black River & YS Falls

Travel along the south coast of Jamaica to Black River, one of the country’s longest rivers. Visit YS Falls, swim in the natural pools, and take a river safari to see some of the natural splendor along the riverbanks.

Take a river cruise to see some of the fascinating bird species and alligators that live in and around the water.

Quick travel tips for your trip to Jamaica

With your itinerary sorted, you’re almost ready for your week in the Caribbean. Here are a few more tidbits of information to take with you.

3 Jamaican foods to try

Jamaican cuisine has many influences, including Indian, Chinese, Spanish and British. This makes for an interesting selection of local foods. Aside from the country’s well-known and expensive coffee , here are some meals and snacks you should look out for.

1. Jerk chicken

To make Jerk chicken, the meat is dry rubbed with a hot spice mixture and then smoked to create a divine meal. Jerk chicken is a local favorite and can be found almost everywhere in Jamaica.

2. Ackee and saltfish

This may be strange for some tastes, but this dish is actually served at breakfast. It’s made up of salted codfish and the ackee fruit . They’re sauteed with onions, tomatoes, peppers, and spices to make an interesting flavor.

3. Jamaican patty

Much like a turnover, this snack consists of a flaky crust and a mouthwatering filling. The traditional filling is beef, but nowadays you can choose to have chicken and fish, among others.

3 phrases you’ll hear on the streets

English is Jamaica’s official language , but the locals definitely have a different way of saying things at times. Here are some sayings that you may not understand – even if they are being spoken in English.

sunset on a resort in montego bay

1. ‘Small Up Yuhself’

This is likely to be heard in the buses or other cramped spaces. It simply means that the person is trying to move past you and is asking you to ‘small up yourself’ and give them space.

2. ‘Weh Yuh Ah Seh’

Loosely translated, this means ‘what you saying’, but it’s used more as ‘how you doing?’ So if you hear this from a local, they’re not asking you to repeat yourself, they’re just asking how you’re doing.

3. ‘Ya Mon’

This is one of the best phrases to learn for your 7-day trip to Jamaica. It’s the equivalent of ‘no problem’ in English and often used as an agreement.

ⓘ TIP: Looking for cold weather travel ideas? We have a list of the best winter getaways in New England. And if you’re in Europe, we’ve also got a story about the best Greek islands to visit.

Final tips for your Jamaica trip

Jamaica’s culture is rich, and its history runs deep . From slaves and pirates to notable people in history. It’s now a fascinating tropical island, attracting loads of travelers from all over the world.

There’s no doubt that whether you’re in Jamaica for a day or a week, the island will make you fall in love with it. So, pack your bags and get ready for a memorable trip.

7 of the best road trips in Jamaica

trip in jamaica

See more of Jamaica with these top driving routes © Ralf Liebhold / Shutterstock

It's no secret that Jamaica   excels at white sand beaches and sensual, apricot-colored sunsets. What travelers often overlook is the island's road-trip appeal.

Whether you’re after mountain views, a ride along the coast or a cruise through quaint neighborhoods, the largest English-speaking island in the Caribbean   can be slowly and comfortably traversed by car within a week. Here are our favorite driving routes in Jamaica.

1. Falmouth

Best historical road trip Montego Bay–Falmouth, Trelawny; 34km (21 miles)

For the history buff, a trip to Falmouth is a must. A quick 45-minute drive from Jamaica’s second city  Montego Bay   will take you to one of the best-preserved Georgian towns in the Caribbean, with a paved two-way highway covering much of the journey.

Despite its age, much of Falmouth’s 18th-century Georgian architecture remains intact. Drive through the historic town along Market St, stop by St Peter’s Anglican Church , and visit the former post office, a stunning yellow building from 1832.

Detour : On the outskirts of Falmouth is Glistening Waters (known locally as Luminous Lagoon), home to bright bioluminescent life that lights up the water in a cool neon blue. Drive there and book a night tour to experience one of the rarest and most magical water phenomena.

Distant view of two people taking a selfie on Negril Beach while others swim in the water

2. Negril sand and sunset trip

Best romantic road trip Montego Bay–Negril; 80km (50 miles)

With four miles of white sand beach  (yes, despite the name) and sensual sunsets, Negril   is the romantic getaway road trip. Located about an hour-and-a-half drive from Montego Bay, the roads are smooth and well-maintained due to the town's popularity with  tourists .

Yet, Negril still maintains a laid-back charm with lush tree-lined streets, local restaurants and independent boutique hotels.  Continue to the West End community for stellar limestone cliffs, and watch daredevils dive off the cliffs into the clear blue Caribbean Sea.

Next, drive to the most western end of Jamaica to visit the bright-white Negril Lighthouse, built in 1894.

There are great sunset views from both the cliffs and the lighthouse, and Negril is often touted as one of the best places in the world to watch the sun go down.

Arrive early on the multi-layered cliffs at  Rick’s Cafe  – one of the top spots to watch the sunset – because it can get crowded very quickly.

Detour: Visit Barney's Flower & Hummingbird Garden to see an abundance of exotic plants and flowers. The garden is also home to the unique Jamaican swallowtail hummingbird.

3. South Coast Treasure Beach

Best off-the-beaten-path trip Kingston–Treasure Beach; 138km (86 miles)

Travel along the rugged southern coast of Jamaica from the bustling capital city of Kingston to the eco-friendly beach town of Treasure Beach . This trip takes you through many small communities and across five parishes.

Unlike the north coast, the roads are less developed with potholes of various sizes – some large enough to swallow a small vehicle – so drive with caution.

Make a pit stop in Mandeville, which has cooler temperatures and some 18th-century Georgian architecture. Check out its historic courthouse too.

Cross over to another parish and continue to Lover’s Leap  restaurant in St Elizabeth, which at a dizzying 518m (1700ft) up, offers splendid panoramic views of Jamaica. The elevated spot is also an ode to Jamaican folklore about star-crossed lovers who jumped the cliffs to escape their enslaver.

Carry on down to Treasure Beach, a relaxing haven situated right on Jamaica’s southern coastline that's known for its farm-to-table culture and tight-knit community.

Although it’s located beachside, be careful of the waves at Treasure Beach because there are many rip tides. Heed all “no swimming” signs and advice even if the water seems shallow.

Have a cooldown at YS Falls , one of Jamaica’s top natural attractions about an hour north of Treasure Beach. The seven-tiered waterfall flows into natural swimming pools surrounded by lush vegetation and towering trees.

Planning tip : Plan your trip to align with the annual turtle-hatching season (most hatch from August through October) to watch hawkbill sea turtles return to the sea in droves.

4. Ocho Rios to Port Antonio

Best road trip for beach views Ocho Rios – Port Antonio; 102km (63 miles)

This trip prioritizes the beach, taking you along the coastline from touristic  Ocho Rios to unspoiled Port Antonio. Leave the tourist bustle of Ocho Rios in your rearview mirror and continue east along the gently meandering road that hugs the oceanside.

Take the A3 road and drive through St Mary Parish, then connect to the A4 road that will lead you towards Annotto Bay and finally Port Antonio .

This is one of the more languid drives in Jamaica. The road is paved but has a few potholes, and it passes along small seaside communities and slowly slopes through the panoramic hills of St Mary.

As you drive through the quiet village of Oracabessa, be on the lookout for the famous Goldeneye Hotel – once the home of author Ian Fleming and the birthplace of his most famous character, James Bond.

The journey descends into Port Maria, welcoming banana fields and a short spurt through the mountains inland before returning to the seaside at the A4 road exit.

The A4 road from St Mary takes you straight to Port Antonio in Portland parish, meandering along the northeast coastline. Pass through Annotto Bay and Buff Bay, the first major towns you’ll meet in Portland, and continue east.

You’ll arrive at Port Antonio, Jamaica’s friendly, unspoiled, gorgeous seaside. Have a meal at the marina and sip on Jamaican Red Stripe beer while listening to the lapping waves at Trident Castle .

Detour : Goldeneye is exquisite, but Firefly touts the best view in all of Jamaica. Take a stop at this national heritage site, which English playwright Noel Coward used to call home. Firefly’s sprawling views across the Spanish Main and the old pirate look-out is a breathtaking pause worth every minute.

5. Papine to Newcastle

Best road trip for scenic delights Papine, Kingston–Newcastle; 23km (14 miles)

This enriching one-hour drive to Newcastle glides through the UNESCO-listed  Blue and John Crow Mountains   but is often overlooked by both locals and visitors.  Once a British Army military hill station, Newcastle is now a training facility for the Jamaica Defense Force.

To get there, take the route from Kingston to Papine and onwards to the sleepy but charming village of Irish Town, before continuing along the main road.

Along the route, pause to take pictures of the mesmerizing ridgelines or try some iconic Blue Mountain coffee, such as at Cafe Blue or Mavis Bank Coffee . This trip is a fantastic way to spend the day.

Though you may depart Paine in light, summer clothing, Newcastle is often chilly and misty, so be sure to bring a jacket.

Detour: Pack your lunch and visit Holywell National Park for a picnic in the Blue Mountains. The park is located en route to Newcastle and offers generous views of Jamaica’s landscape. There are cabins to rent if you want to stay over, and you can go on a guided hike to a waterfall.

6. Treasure Beach to Negril

Best road trip for rugged landscapes Treasure Beach–Negril; 99km (61.5 miles)

The beauty of this road trip is that it explores some of Jamaica’s most untouched landscapes. Vegetation flourishes here, where the sights and sounds of fauna in their natural habitat coincide peacefully with the local community.

Spot crocodiles in the Black River and drive through the picturesque Bamboo Avenue – a 4km (2.5-mile) stretch of bamboo canopy forming an elegant arch on both sides of the road.

Bamboo Avenue is pockmarked with a few potholes. Be careful when driving, as the shade from the bamboo causes the potholes to look like shadows. Stop by the Border community to eat fried fish from roadside stalls along your way.

From Border, continue to Bluefields, a small community in Westmoreland parish with one of the best public beaches you can find.  The next major town is Savanna-la-Mar, known locally as “Sav” or “Sav-la-mar,” where you can replenish and stock up on personal items. Sav, the capital and main commerce town in Westmoreland, has excellent infrastructure for renting vehicles, finding mechanics, banking, etc.

Detour:  About 20km from Treasure Beach, you'll pass  Parottee Bay. From here, book a boat ride to Floyd’s Pelican Bar ,  a rustic and charming bar on stilts in the middle of the Caribbean sea that sells the freshest seafood. If you’re lucky, you might spot a dolphin or two on your way.

7. Buff Bay

Best off-road trip Kingston–Buff Bay, Portland; 64km (40 miles)

Buff Bay is located in the parish of Portland on the northeast side of the island, known for its high vegetation and rainfall. If you like off-roading, then this is the road trip for you. Driving from Kingston to Buff Bay offers a breathtaking experience through the winding mountain roads of Jamaica.

There is a relatively clear route that’s almost a singular road.  However, the roads are rough, and corners are sharp and winding, making it difficult to see oncoming traffic; drive slowly and carefully.

While you can certainly use a normal car, it’s best to take a 4WD to navigate the bumpy unpaved roads that cut through the Blue Mountains , Jamaica’s highest mountain range .

Before you arrive at Buff Bay, stop by Newcastle to admire dreamy, misty views of the famed peaks. Continue east along the Portland coastline if you fancy soaking up rays on some of Jamaica’s most pristine beaches .

Local tip: The best time to take this trip is during the dry season. The area experiences landslides during the rainy season and roads can sometimes get blocked.

Tips for driving in Jamaica:

  • Always drive on the left.
  • Jamaica has a compulsory seatbelt law.
  • Speed limits range from 50km/h (30mph) to 80km/h (50mph) and vary from place to place across the island.
  • Carry ID and all relevant car-rental paperwork at all times, since police may pull you over.
  • You can expect any road with the designation "A" to be in fairly good condition. "B" roads are generally much narrower and often badly potholed but still passable in the average rental car. Many B roads are not shown on maps.
  • Minor roads, particularly those in the Blue Mountains and Cockpit Country, can be tough going. If you plan to drive off the major routes, it’s essential to have a stalwart 4WD.
  • Signage on main roads is good, but directional signs are few and far between as soon as you leave them.
  • On B roads, what may appear on a map to be a 30-minute journey may take several hours.
  • More often than not, there are no signs to indicate sharp curves, steep ascents or work in progress.
  • Road are often poorly lit at night, if at all.
  • Jamaica has some of the world’s most dangerously aggressive drivers. Cars race through towns, play chicken with one another and cut across the opposite lane on blind corners. Use extreme caution and drive defensively, especially at night when you should be prepared to meet oncoming cars that are either without lights or blinding you with high beams.
  • Use your horn liberally, especially when approaching blind corners, and watch out for pedestrians and livestock.

Jamaica Travel Guide: Where To Stay, Eat, Drink And Visit

Set to become one of the hottest travel destinations of 2024, a trip to Jamaica is one not to miss.

There are a whole host of reasons to visit Jamaica, not least for the delicious local cuisine, unbelievable beaches, rivers and deep valleys. From the lively music scene and hospitable culture to the soaring temperatures, the Caribbean island is the perfect escape from the gloomy British weather we're accustomed to.

Six hours ahead of the UK, Jamaica's long-haul flight time from London is around nine to eleven hours, which may seem lengthy, but it's definitely worth getting through an extra couple monotonous in-flight films, snacks and a bit of (attempted) shut-eye.

In 2023, Jamaica saw an increase of tourists holidaying there by 17.8%, as discovered by Travel And Tour World . Even more so, it's expected that a total of 250,000 tourists from UK and Ireland will visit by 2025, which is why we're adding Jamaica to our ever-growing bucket list destination list, pronto.

If you want to get ahead of the commotion of what it set to be one of travel's newest trending destination, here's a first-timers guide to Jamaica :

What To Do During A Day Trip

Dunn’s river falls and park.

a man walking through ocho rios dunns river and waterfall

Quite possibly one of the top sights that Jamaica has to offer is Dunn's River Falls and Park. Home to the island's tallest waterfall, which stands at 600ft, it flows directly into the Caribbean Sea. Make a day of it and spend time swimming and relaxing in the water. For the thrill seekers, this waterfall is climbable - just make sure you're wearing water shoes and clothes that you won't mind getting wet. Although the journey to the top may seem intimidating, you'll soon find that it's very safe and worth it.

Doctor’s Cave Bathing Club

Ranked as the number one beach in Montego Bay, this bathing club is the closest spot to paradise in this corner of the island. Enjoy numerous restaurants on the beach front, or service straight to your lounger, you'll leave your worries at the entrance of this world-famous bathing club.

Bob Marley Museum Tour

If you're still reeling from the One Love film and are keen to know more about the legend that is Marley, adding a museum tour of his house in Kingston should be a must on your list of things to do. You'll be taken around by a well-educated guide and learn more about the cultural icon's life and the legacy he left behind.

Martha Brae Rafting

martha brae bamboo rafting

Can you really say that you’ve been to Jamaica if you haven’t tried the infamous (and incredibly Instagrammable) river boat-rafting? There are a couples of places to go, but Martha Brae is top of our list. Hop on a handmade bamboo raft, and soak in the serenity as your guide steers you down the river and teaches you about the surrounding areas. Sit back, relax and and let the flow of the river put you at ease in minutes, whilst listening to, and looking out for a variety of exotic birds. If you’re feeling adventurous, try your hand at steering (an unexpected amount of elbow grease is needed) or even take a dip in the water.

Horseback Riding

Calling all horse lovers! No matter your experience level when it comes to horses, this is an inclusive activity for everyone. There are several sites across the island for horseback riding in the ocean, but we suggest doing it by Salmon Point fishing village, just before sunset. As you'll be in the water, wear clothes you won't mind getting wet as well as water shoes to ensure a safe and comfortable grip.

9 of the best things to do in Jamaica

J amaica may best known by tourists for its beach resorts and white sand beaches, but this beautiful Caribbean island offers so much more for the intrepid traveller.

The island’s wealth of natural sights is perhaps its most remarkable feature, with the soft sands and azure waters of its beaches complemented by unique array of inland waterfalls like Dunn’s River Falls, the towering summit of Blue Mountain Peak and the rainforest-fringed waters of the Martha Brae River.

The towns and cities are mesmerising too. The capital, Kingston, acts as the beating heart of the country and its cultural centre, while seaside towns like Ocho Rios or the famed Montego Bay provide a dose of the laid-back Caribbean vibe that Jamaica is renowned for.

In between is a glut of outdoor adventures, cultural activities and Jamaican jewels to discover, from the wonders of Reggae to Jamaica’s culinary exports. Below, we’ve rounded up the best things to do in Jamaica to help you make the most of your visit.

Take a tour of the capital

As the capital, Kingston is the ‘centre’ of Jamaica and the cultural heart of the country. It is a stark contrast to the relaxed resorts and tranquil coastline of much of the rest of Jamaica, but its lively energy has provided much of what has made modern Jamaica great, from arts and music to a diverse culinary scene.

Reggae fans will want to start by exploring the life of one of Jamaica’s sons at the Bob Marley Museum (where the artist lived from 1975), while anyone wanting to cover more of Jamaican art and culture should carry on to the National Gallery of Jamaica – showcasing everything from indigenous carvings to 18th-century British works – before finishing at the Devon House estate, home to gardens and a collection of antiques once belonging to George Stiebel, the country’s first Black millionaire.

Other historical sites include the 17th-century Fort Charles and Liberty Halls, the headquarters of one of the founders of Pan-Africanism, Marcus Garvey.

Kingston has earned itself a reputation for high levels of crime, so make sure you plan any trip to the city carefully and avoid areas that are known to be dangerous.

Visit Ocho Rios

Ocho Rios is one of several seaside resort towns on the island. While Montego Bay and Negril are worth visiting, Ocho Rios is a great place to spend a couple of nights due to the range of interesting sites nearby, as well as a more relaxed, less high-end resort vibe than that of ‘MoBay’.

Dunn’s River Falls, the Blue Hole and Konoko Falls (more on them below) are all within 30 minutes’ drive, while locals and tourists alike mix at some ofJamaica’s best beaches, including Mahogany Beach, Fisherman’s Beach and Ocho Rios Bay. There’s plenty of character to the town itself too though, from the stalls of the Craft Market or Island Village to the tropical gardens of Shaw Park. The Clock Tower marks the centre of the city, and the surrounding area, filled with Caribbean architecture, is lively both day and night.

See the best waterfalls

Jamaica has a wealth of waterfalls to explore, and Dunn’s River Falls is undeniably the most popular for tourists. They lie around two miles from Ocho Rios, and remain an exceptionally beautiful natural wonder despite the large number of visitors. The falls themselves are idyllic; they stand at 180 metres tall and consist of giant limestone rocks covered with several cascades and surrounded by tropical rainforest. Visitors can climb to the top, but it gets busy so aim to visit outside of peak times.

Konoko Falls is another, less grandiose option near Ocho Rios, with a similarly picturesque setting and far fewer crowds. On the east coast, Reach Falls is one of the more remote options, where swimming in emerald pools and hiking up to Mandingo Cave are both popular. Mayfield Falls are a great option for those looking to swim among achingly beautiful surroundings, as are the waters of the Ocho Rios Blue Hole, where a smaller waterfall complements the turquoise waters below.

Explore the lagoons

The Blue Lagoon and Luminous Lagoon are two of Jamaica’s most striking natural sites, both situated on the northern coast and sitting along different points of the Martha Brae River.

The former lies in the east, where the waters of the Martha Brae funnel through to those of the Caribbean Sea. The lagoon is 55 metres deep and changes colour regularly – between shades of blue, emerald and turquoise – thanks to the mixing of freshwater and seawater. It lies in a protected cove among cliffs and dense greenery, and offers both wild swimming and boat tour opportunities.

The Luminous Lagoon sits further west, not far from Falmouth, and was once an important location for ships arriving to Jamaica. Though surrounded more by buildings than rainforest, this lagoon has become famous due to the microorganisms called dinoflagellates that populate it. When disturbed, they produce a glowing light that makes the lagoon a striking sight (access is only via boat tours, but you can swim as part of the tour).

Hit the beach

Like any Caribbean island, Jamaica is home to a slew of pristine beaches, where white sands are fringed by palm trees and lapped by the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. These beaches range from beautiful secluded spots to much-loved resort areas like Montego Bay.

For something a little more private, opt for Frenchman’s Cove, Boston Bay, Lime Cay or Parrottee Beach. Areas like Half Moon Beach, Seven Mile and James Bond Beach are are little busier – with more restaurants and activities – while some of the most popular beaches on the island include Doctor’s Cave, Winnifred Beach and Reggae Beach. Ocho Rios Bay and Puerto Seco are the most popular resort beaches.

Explore Montego Bay

Montego Bay has formed a reputation as one of the most popular tourist destinations in Jamaica, offering luxurious accommodation options, stretches of fine white sands, lively nightlife and activities that range from water sports to hiking, golfing and enjoying the array of bars and restaurants. In reality, the city is split into two parts – the charming, if sometimes chaotic, local life of the city proper and the pristine beaches and fancy hotels of the touristy suburbs (and Ironshore in particular).

In the city, you can discover Jamaican history and culture, from the National Museum West to the Montego Bay Cultural Centre, as well as landmarks like the impressive St James Parish Church and bustling Sam Sharpe Square (slightly outside the city also lies the Indigenous Rastafarian Village). On the coast, visitors can spend days relaxing on beaches like Doctor’s Cave, enjoying a game of golf at Cinnamon Hill, hiking and rafting at Montpelier Jungle Outpost, or whiling away the afternoons and evenings with cocktails on the Hip Strip.

Like Kingston, some aresa of Montego Bay are known to be dangerous, so plan a city trip carefully and avoid any known crime spots.

Take a trip on a bamboo raft

Jamaica’s answer to the gondola trips of Venice is an even more relaxing affair. These trips take place on long bamboo rafts, with two or three people at a time taken along the waters of the Rio Grande or Martha Brae River by a local guide, floating through thick rainforest and green tunnels before stopping off for optional wild swims.

Tours set off from ‘Rafter’s Village’, a horseshoe-shaped island near the town of Falmouth on the northern coast, and start from around $99 USD (£77) for a two-person trip.

Try some local delicacies

Like many other Caribbean islands, Jamaica has taken influences from several countries and regions to produce the cuisine that is seen on the island today. African, Asian and European touches have mixed with native ingredients (and those introduced from elsewhere) to produce a culinary scene as varied and unique as anywhere in the region.

Popular dishes on the island include curry goat, ackee and saltfish (a local fruit prepared with salted codfish) and variations of jerk pork (slow-cooked pork marinated in chilies, thyme, allspice and garlic), with street food dishes such as beef patties (almost like a Jamaican version of Cornish pasties) and fried dumplings also found throughout the country, from street food vendors to restaurants. Rum is the alcoholic drink of choice here, and some of the best can be sampled with a tour of the Hampden Great House Estate.

Ascend Blue Mountain Peak

Blue Mountain Peak is Jamaica’s tallest mountain, standing at an impressive 2,256 metres tall. The ‘classic’ trail to the summit covers almost six miles over the course of around four hours – though some routes cover up to 10 miles – with many choosing to set off in the night to catch the sunrise at around 6am (a stay at Whitfield Hall allows you a later start time). Along the way you’ll pass through dense jungle vegetation that turns to pine trees and evergreens as the altitude increases, eventually giving way to a clear view the misty hills as the sun comes up.

I Went on a Girls Trip to This Luxury, Adults-only Resort in Jamaica — Here's Why It Made Me Love All-inclusives

A few days catching up with my best friend over frothy drinks completely changed my mind about all-inclusive resorts.

trip in jamaica

Courtesy of Lauren Breedlove

I was lounging in the Jamaican sun, my face tipped to the sky in an effort to soak up every ounce of the vitamin D that my body had been deprived of all winter. Chicken tenders and nachos had just been delivered by a room service attendant who attempted to hide her smile at the scene of our poolside picnic. As if this wasn’t paradise enough, my best friend and I were bobbing around in unicorn and flamingo floats, drinks in hand, toasting to a reunion two years in the making.

We had just arrived at Excellence Oyster Bay , an adults-only luxury resort just outside of Montego Bay, Jamaica, for the kind of trip I usually avoid: all-inclusives. Not that spending a few days on the beach gorging myself on limitless food and adult beverages sounds terrible by any means, but when I travel, my style is go-go-go. I like to pack in all the things, experience the local culture and cuisine, and venture off the beaten path, and my past few experiences at all-inclusive resorts had been anything but that — crowded and with mediocre, buffet-style food. For that reason, I’d always avoided them, until now.

My best friend of 30 years and I had thrown around a few ideas when planning a trip to celebrate our 40th birthdays. Despite being long-distance friends for more years than we actually resided in the same city, we had remained close since meeting in 7th grade band practice. After almost two years of not seeing each other, we were ready to celebrate and relax, which meant I needed to let go of my usual travel planning mentality. As it turns out, the turquoise-laden shores of Excellence Oyster Bay was the perfect place to do just that.

I’ll be honest, the thought of spending four days solely on the resort’s property made me a little antsy. But the friendly staff and ocean view from our room kicked relaxation mode in high gear. (The welcome glass of prosecco didn’t hurt, either.) In fact, having zero plans for several uninterrupted days dedicated to catching up with my oldest friend in a low-key setting was liberating. My mind was no longer attempting to maximize every minute; instead, I was entering go-with-the-flow mode — and that called for a frozen drink with my feet in the sand.

On our first evening, we explored the resort grounds, which were big yet not so sprawling that reaching the opposite end demanded a super-long walk. We caught up over sunset; cotton-candy clouds mirrored in the calm Caribbean. With a smorgasbord of restaurants to choose from, dinnertime was our oyster. Over the course of our stay, we dabbled in Italian cuisine , got fancy at Chez Isabelle , tried local specialties like curried goat and oxtail stew at Caribbean Grove , and indulged in sommelier-picked wines on our final night at Zenith . Some of our favorites were the quick eats for lunch by the pool and beach; spicy jerk chicken at Jerk Hut and the Jamaican patties at Cielo Bar, washed down with a Red Stripe beer, of course.

We spent mornings at the beach, which, contrary to my prior all-inclusive experiences, were quiet. Since the resort is located on its own private, gated peninsula, there wasn’t anyone trying to sell us anything. Afternoons were for pool-hopping, specifically in the floats I had ordered and painstakingly shoved into my carry-on suitcase, rendering it a lumpy piece of checked luggage (totally worth it). We became known as the "float girls" around the resort, dipping in all four of the communal pools, two of which were exclusive to Excellence Club guests. Excellence Club guests also get access to private beach areas, private check-in and checkout, and a laundry list of other perks.

A hydrotherapy treatment was included in our stay, so we ventured to the Miilé Spa one afternoon for the multistep process that had us both laughing so hard, our cheeks hurt. We bonded over the hot and cold water stations, one of which involved dumping a bucket of cold water over our heads.

There were plenty of activities , from stand-up paddleboarding to biking to yoga classes, and you can choose to do as much or little as you’d like. Surprisingly, I relished in not doing much of anything at all, except hanging out with my best friend and relaxing in the spectacular sunshine. The one thing we knew we couldn’t pass up was a nighttime excursion that had always been on my wish list: seeing bioluminescent water. The resort happens to be a short boat ride from this natural phenomenon, where we were able to swim in the water, creating a light show of electric blue all around us.

The post-dinner scene was lively, with music and other performances every night. We danced to the Bob Marley cover band, and sometime during karaoke, I realized I was the most relaxed I’d been while traveling in a long time. The trip paid homage to the sleepovers of our teen years, when we had few worries and could always find something to laugh about in between never-ending chatter. Giving into the all-inclusive mentality gifted me permission to chill out and be fully present, and, as it turns out, I didn’t have to choose between a trip centered around cultural and culinary experiences — I could have a bit of both.

I boarded the plane with salty hair, some fresh memories with my best friend, and the small miracle of somehow fitting those pool floats back in my suitcase without breaking the zipper. I think I’ll do it again sometime.

In Punta Cana you cannot drink the water in your room; can you drink room water in Sandals Negril ?

How are the ACs in the rooms? (staying in the Longshore basic room)

The food in Punta Cana is so-so, how is it at Sandals?

Is it safe to walk the 7-mile beach during the day?

Graduation year: 2024

High school: Macomb High School

Hometown: Macomb, Ill.

Majors: History education; middle grades social science

Minor: Psychology

Activities: Office of Student Life and Leadership (OSL), Leadership Academy, Phi Omega Phi fraternity, Student Government Association, varsity basketball and track & field

Internship: Student teaching at United Township High School in East Moline, Ill.

Post-grad plans: Just accepted a teaching position at Rivermont Collegiate in Bettendorf, Iowa

Why Augustana?

I was originally exposed to Augustana through my cousin, who was a 2022 graduate. I chose Augustana based on the excellence of their education department and the rich tradition associated with both their basketball and track & field programs. I saw Augustana as a place that could help me grow as a student, athlete and as a leader, which were opportunities I didn't envision myself getting at a big university.

Are you where you thought you'd be when you first came to campus?

Absolutely not! I came into college wanting to be an All-American basketball and track athlete; however, I wouldn't change my experience for anything.

Since joining Augie, I have evolved into a student leader on campus being the president of my fraternity, holding leadership roles within the OSL, and having many other leadership responsibilities throughout my tenure here. I have grown and matured in so many ways, and that is in large part due to my willingness to try new things.

Who helped you get to where you are now?

I will start with thanking my education professors Dr. Scarlett, Dr. Schroeder and Dr. Egan, who all helped transform me into the educator and learner I am today. I want to give a special shoutout to Dr. Michael Scarlett. I can't think of a better mentor and advisor who has been with me through thick and thin.

To Ken Brill, Tia Fuhr, Schary Santamour and Kirk Anderson, thank you for helping me achieve success as a leader on campus and for giving me the opportunities to do so.

To my dad, mom and sister, much of what I do is done with the mindset to make you proud as you all have supported me throughout my entire life, and it is because of your unwavering support that I have to thank for all of my accomplishments and overall experience at Augustana.

And finally, to my friends, thank you for making me the person I am proud to be today and for creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Peak experience?

I have two very memorable experiences. My first would have to be my student teaching at United Township High School. Through this experience I was able to develop critical skills that will translate well into my future profession, and I was able to create some pretty awesome relationships with my students, which I will cherish forever.

Another experience would be a trip I took to Greece with the basketball team the summer after my sophomore year. This trip ushered in my love for travel.

What surprised you?

The immense number of opportunities for growth that Augie gave me was something that I didn't really know was possible. Since Augie is a smaller school, I knew that there would be more chances for me to get a job, to get more one-on-one time with my professors and to try out new things. However, I didn't know how easy it would be to get involved and make an impact.

How did you use your Augie Choice?

I used my Augie Choice for a study abroad trip to Jamaica. I had the privilege of teaching at an all-girls Catholic school in Kingston, where I not only got to fine-tune my teaching prowess, but also immerse myself into a new culture and experience a beautiful country.

What will you miss the most?

The people! The people I have befriended here have truly made Augustana a place I call home. Many of the people that I have forged relationships with throughout my four years will one day stand at my wedding.

I will also miss the morning walks to class along the Slough, the late nights in the library and the mid-day runs to get coffee (shoutout Redband).

Advice for the Class of 2028?

Your college years are very transformative to your growth as an individual. This is your chance to truly find yourself and find out who you want to become. It is okay to fail, fail again and fail again in order to transform yourself into the person you can be proud of. Don't ever doubt yourself.

"It's been an absolute pleasure working with Sam these past four years. He is a natural leader. Whether it was in student teaching, during our J-term in Jamaica or in the classroom, Sam was always willing to step up and lead the way. His future students will be lucky to have him as their teacher. I am so excited to see where his teaching career takes him! He will accomplish great things!” – Dr. Michael Scarlett, associate professor, education
