While sandboxing rules previously prevented the app from being offered in the Mac App Store, TripMode 3 takes advantage of macOS 11 Big Sur’s Network Extensions framework to provide a safer way to filter your network traffic and be allowed to offer a subscription option in the Mac App Store. The Mac App Store edition of TripMode is priced at $11.99 per year, enabling you to use TripMode on all your Macs, including everyone in your Family Sharing group. I’m glad it’s on the Mac App Store, I guess, but I do not understand a $12/year subscription for a $15 app.

$15 is the price of a single-user single-computer licence. $12/year ($1/month) is the cost for up to six users on unlimited computers. Seems reasonable to me in principle, and given how excellent TripMode is, extremely reasonable in practice. TripMode is a great example of high quality, well designed Mac software, and yet it’s inexpensive.

TripMode 2: Control your Mac’s data usage

Note : This story has not been updated for several years.

One of my favorite Mac utilities is TripMode , which lets you control which apps have access to your network and alert you to how much data they’re using. I use it primarily to keep bandwidth use low during podcasting sessions so I can prioritize my podcast data, but its most broad use is probably controlling data when you’re using a Mac tethered to a cellular device or other metered data connection.

TripMode 2 was just released, and it’s an upgrade that addresses several of the original version’s shortcomings. Most exciting to me is support for profiles, allowing you to change between different sets of blocks depending on what kind of work you’re doing or the particular network you’re connected to. My settings for doing work on my MacBook Air tethered to my iPhone are quite a bit different for my settings when I’m podcasting, for instance—and with TripMode 2, I can create different profiles for both situations and switch between them.

TripMode 2 also adds a new data-limiting feature that will turn off the spigot of data when you reach a predefined limit, letting you pace yourself and not swamp your data plan. There’s a raft of other features , too, including accessibility and localization support and much more optimized processor and memory usage.

TripMode 2 costs $8, and the upgrade is free for existing TripMode users like me. If you’ve ever been frustrated by your Mac destroying your data plan while tethered to your iPhone, you need to get TripMode.

(And yes, it’s still incredibly frustrating that the Mac is unable to change its behavior when it’s tethered to a cellular data network, a feature that’s been a part of iOS since the beginning. I’m dubious about whether Apple will ever bother to introduce this concept to macOS, but since WWDC is just around the corner, we can at least hope. It would certainly open the door to MacBooks with built-in cellular radios.)

Aber es sollten definitiv auch kürzere Laufzeiten als 12 Monate angeboten werden. Leider funktioniert Tripmode nicht korrekt im Zusammenspiel mit meiner FW, Lulu.

We've recently introduced more purchase choices: a new monthly subscription, in addition to the existing yearly subscription, the Lifetime IAP (single purchase option), and a fully free option (limited to Live Monitoring only). We're also looking into the compatibility issues with Lulu, thanks for mentioning that. In general, we recommend not to use multiple network filtering apps at the same time, as it can lead to unpredictable behaviour from any of them. All the best, the TripMode Team.

Habe mir die App geholt um mein Datenvolumen im mobilen Netz zu schonen wenn ich per HotSpot mit dem Handy verbunden bin. Tripmode gibt mir nun endlich die Möglichkeit das Hochladen von Fotos oder Videos zu unterbinden.

Perfekt. Man sieht, welche Prozesse auf dem mac wieviel GB gerade brauchen und kann diese Prozesse auch stoppen. Einfach und gut. Super

How to use Travel Mode with Apple Vision Pro on an airplane

Apple Vision Pro has the potential to be a game-changer for travel, offering an immersive experience in a relatively small form factor. But to do so, it'll need to overcome some of the issues that have plagued mixed-reality headsets when they're used while in motion. Apple's answer to this problem is Travel Mode, a feature that aims to mitigate the effects of using Vision Pro on an airplane. Here's how you can use Travel Mode on Vision Pro, how it works, and some problems you might run into. 

Why using Vision Pro is difficult while moving

Apple Vision Pro uses a collection of cameras and sensors to not only track your eyes and hands but also your surroundings. Apps and windows in visionOS are essentially "anchored" to a physical place in your physical environment. That's what allows you to walk around your space without apps and windows moving around. However, this poses a problem for Vision Pro any time the wearer is in a moving vehicle, like a plane, train, or car. For these reasons, trying to use Vision Pro in a vehicle is pretty much impossible. That is unless you're on an airplane using Travel Mode. 

Does Travel Mode work in cars or trains?

Apple officially says that Travel Mode should only be used in airplanes, and reinforces that it isn't designed to be used on trains or in cars. But can you do it anyway? It depends. For starters, you absolutely should not use Apple Vision Pro if you're the one operating a moving vehicle — such as a car. This is, of course, because it is incredibly dangerous. Also, even as a passenger, a car's motion is too variable and inconsistent to make Travel Mode worth using. 

Commuter rail trains might give you better luck, but results may vary. Light rail trains and subways will likely suffer from the same issues as cars because the frequent stops and variable speed throw off Travel Mode. However, something like a long-distance commuter rail train making only a few stops might work with Travel Mode. Officially, Apple's guidance for using Travel Mode is simple: stick to airplanes. 

You shouldn't try to use Travel Mode in Apple Vision Pro while your airplane is taking off, taxiing, or landing. In-flight turbulence may cause an issue with Travel Mode as well. However, if you've gotten through the takeoff and are settling in for the flight, you can start using Travel Mode by following the steps below. Vision Pro might also prompt you to use Travel Mode automatically if it detects that you're on an airplane.

• Look up, wait for the Control Center bubble to appear, and pinch to open the Control Center
• This will open a compact Control Center view, but you'll need to look at the Control Center icon again and pinch it to see more settings
• Look at the Travel Mode icon and pinch it. The icon is right under the Wi-Fi symbol, and is the Vision Pro logo with three lines on top of it
• A pop-up will appear explaining how Travel Mode works, and further saying that it should only be used on planes. Pinch the Turn On Travel Mode button to continue

After that, Travel Mode will be enabled. To continue using Travel Mode without issue, make sure you don't look out your airplane windows, as the moving environment can disrupt Travel Mode. You can also long-press the Digital Crown to re-center your view if it does not appear to be straight. With Travel Mode on, you can use Vision Pro like normal, but some immersive features will be disabled. 

Travel Mode remains active until it is turned off, or until Vision Pro is turned off. To stop using Travel Mode:

• A Travel Mode bubble will appear below the Control Center quick settings, with a Turn off button beside it
• Pinch to select Turn off , and pinch Turn off Travel Mode to confirm your choice

It'll take a few seconds to turn off Travel Mode, and you should remain still until your visionOS view returns. After that, you can keep using Vision Pro as normal, or stow it away for landing. 

Travel Mode works fairly well as a way to use Apple Vision Pro while flying. However, that doesn't mean there aren't other issues you might experience if you use Vision Pro on a plane. Wearing Vision Pro in public, especially in a plane's tight quarters, is still a socially awkward experience. Plus, you'll need to manage to pull out Vision Pro, keep track of the battery pack, and use gestures without bumping into people or things.

Size is also a factor. The Apple Vision Pro headset itself isn't too large, but the carrying case is. It takes up a ton of space in a backpack and makes nearly all parts of the traveling experience a tad bit more difficult. When flying to, from, or within the U.S., you will be required to completely unpack Vision Pro for TSA screening. My least favorite part of traveling with Apple Vision Pro wasn't due to an issue with Travel Mode — it was because of the headaches getting through security.

Still, there are plenty of reasons you might want to bring Vision Pro along while traveling. If you can deal with the difficulties and awkwardness that come with wearing Vision Pro on a plane, Travel Mode is a pretty neat feature.

Use Apple Vision Pro on an airplane with Travel Mode

With Travel Mode, Apple Vision Pro adapts to give you the best experience while traveling on an airplane.

Apple Vision Pro uses an array of sensors to see the environment around you and keep the items in your view stable. If Apple Vision Pro senses that you're on an airplane, it asks if you want to turn on Travel Mode to adapt to the unique motion and environment of commercial air travel.

You can turn on Travel Mode when Apple Vision Pro suggests it, or any time in Control Center.

In some situations, Apple Vision Pro may think you're on an airplane when you're not, and prompt you to turn on Travel Mode. Remember to never use Travel Mode if you're not on an airplane.

How to turn Travel Mode on or off from Control Center

Tap Turn On Travel Mode to confirm.

To exit Travel Mode, go back to Control Center, then tap Turn Off.

Travel Mode is for use only when you're a passenger on an airplane. Never use Apple Vision Pro while operating a moving vehicle, bicycle, heavy machinery, or in any other situations requiring attention to safety. Get more tips for using your Vision Pro safely .

Keep these things in mind when using Travel Mode

Stay seated while using Travel Mode, and take off your Apple Vision Pro before you stand up.

Take off your Apple Vision Pro during taxiing, takeoff, and landing, and if the flight has turbulence.

Avoid looking out the airplane's windows, since this can affect your device's ability to track your surroundings.

Be aware of your surroundings. When you use Travel Mode, features that help you see and stay aware of your surroundings are turned off.

If content in Apple Vision Pro appears tilted or off-center, long-press the Digital Crown to re-center your view.

Restarting Apple Vision Pro turns off Travel Mode.

Availability of some Apple Vision Pro features in Travel Mode

If you have Pointer Control turned on and set to use your head as the pointer, you might not be able to turn on Travel Mode after the airplane begins moving. To use Travel Mode when your head is set as the pointer, turn on Travel Mode before you board the plane, or when you find your seat. Remove Apple Vision Pro for takeoff, then put it back on when it's safe to do so. Travel Mode will still be on and ready to use.

Persona isn't available when you're using Travel Mode.

You can’t set up your Apple Vision Pro while traveling on an airplane.
