UC Davis West Village Neighborhood

Imagine a sustainable community, rich in culture, arts, innovation, and education — a walkable, mixed-use neighborhood in a location surrounded by entertainment, exciting opportunities, and utmost appreciation of nature.

UC Davis West Village

UC Davis West Village transcends community and campus norms beyond “just buildings” into a realm of innovation in sustainability. As the largest zero-net-energy development in the United States, West Village consists of academic facilities, innovative Energy Hubs, and housing for more than 2,000 students, faculty and staff.

The area west of Vic Fazio Highway offers more than 650 apartments, a recreation center, study facilities, outdoor community space, and 42,500 square feet of commercial space for endless opportunities. A central community building features a fitness center, multipurpose room and student support services.

Exceptional Education

Sacramento City College Davis Center at UC Davis West Village is the first community college center to be located on a University of California campus, thanks to a partnership between UC Davis and the Los Rios Community College District. The college center offers 11 classrooms, a computer lab, art studio, career technology center, administrative offices and counseling space. And it has earned a silver certification for LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, which is a program of the U.S. Green Building Council.

The Future Of Innovation

In addition, UC Davis West Village houses the Joe A. Heidrick Western Center for Agricultural Equipment (WCAE), the Western Cooling Efficiency Center, and the UC Davis Center for Design in the Public Interest. The UC Davis Energy and Transportation Center is the first of three planned energy hubs and was established by a group of energy research centers, including:

  • UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies
  • China Center for Energy & Transportation
  • Sustainable Transportation Energy Pathways (STEPs)
  • Urban Land Use and Transportation Center
  • Center for Water-Energy Efficiency
  • Energy Efficiency Center Policy
  • Institute for Energy, Environment & the Economy
  • Western Cooling Efficiency Center

Modern Student Housing

While UC Davis West Village’s innovators look to the future, the community itself serves an urgent need now — housing. As housing in Davis becomes more difficult for UC Davis students to secure, West Village offers up hundreds of student apartments as respite for transfer students, incoming students, and continuing students who struggle to find student housing.

Sol at West Village

Sol at West Village is an exciting, eco-friendly housing community with a variety of floor plans, resort-style amenities, and luxurious apartments. Energy-efficient appliances are included in the apartments, along with a 42-inch, flat-screen TV in every living room; full-size washer and dryer; and private bathrooms.

Of course, looking to the future is a natural part of a planned community, which is why additional housing is already underway. The Green at West Village is set to add 1,250 units and will feature recreation fields, a community building, and devoted study areas. And in sticking to environmentally-friendly practices, The Green will also feature a photovoltaic system which will power the facility.

Around The Town

UC Davis West Village offers a unique living experience you can’t find elsewhere. And if you venture a short distance, you’ll find everything else you could possibly need. Excitement, entertainment, exploration and education are around every turn as murals and sculptures adorn the area and art galleries welcome visitors. Three cinema complexes keep crowds on the edges of their seats, while more than ten stages present a plethora of theater and performance art.

UC Davis isn’t the only place in West Village where students can learn. Trivia nights are hosted weekly at nearby eateries, and the area overflows with interesting exhibits at Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art, UC Davis Design Museum, The Artery, John Natsoulas Gallery, Bohart Museum of Entomology and Exploreit Science Center.

A Breath of Fresh Air

But if you find the indoors a bit too stuffy, go outside and get ready for some fabulous ways to exercise both body and mind. UC Davis West Village is a bicyclist’s dream, where bike paths and greenbelts weave seamlessly through area parks, and 45% of commuters to the university ride bikes. There’s also the Davis Bike Club, the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame, and a fantastic DIY bicycle shop open to the public (Davis Bike Collective). If running is more your style, try to keep up with the Golden Valley Harriers!

Close To Everything

The close proximity to the university as well as the city makes UC Davis West Village one of the best places to live. The Davis Farmers Market is nearby with ready-made desserts and meals, live music, and fresh produce from farms in the region. Or take a trip to the California Raptor Center to meet fascinating birds of prey and learn about falcons, eagles, harriers, hawks, owls and more. And don’t forget to stop by Häagen-Dazs Honey Bee Haven, which promotes education and observation of honey bees, as well as provides resources to local bee pollinators.

New undergrad apartments rendering

The Green at West Village

The new undergraduate apartments at West Village will include approximately 1,250 student housing units, with a total of approximately 3,300 beds.  The project will include a community building, recreation fields, study areas and photovoltaic systems to provide power to the facility.  The project site is approximately 34 acres to the North of the existing West Village apartments and wraps around to the west.

The Developer and UC Davis anticipate the project will have approximately 1,000 beds completed in time for occupancy in Fall 2020 and that the remaining beds will be completed in time for occupancy in Fall 2021.  The project will consist of nine four-story apartment buildings and one one-story community center, totaling approximately 1,270,000 gross-square-feet, including community space and support facilities.  The approximately 10,000 gross-square-foot community center will include study and meeting rooms, a fitness center, leasing offices and a mail center.  Outdoor recreation spaces will include seating and outdoor dining areas and approximately two acres of athletic fields and general use green space for student use, as well as approximately 3,340 spaces for bicycle parking.

The project is designed to be compatible in architectural style and color to surrounding on- and off- campus residential neighborhoods.  The buildings will have double-loaded corridors with air-conditioned hallways.  The landscaping is intended to be appropriate for the region and plantings and placement will be selected for low water use and longevity.  The overall layout will be bike and pedestrian focused, with dedicated bike paths designed to separate pedestrian, bike and vehicular traffic.  Building elevations will include a variation of texture and color in order to provide a cohesive brand to the neighborhood while providing distinction to each building for way finding.

The Series 2018 Project will be designed to be Net Zero Energy, meaning the site will produce an equivalent amount of energy to the amount of energy it consumes (on an annual basis).  Energy is expected to be produced by an approximately 5.527 Megawatt solar farm, with solar panels distributed throughout the property.  Such panels may be included on carports.

Qs world university rankings place uc davis at 35th globally in life sciences and medicine.

Female student looking a plant in the conservatory

  • by Evan White
  • April 11, 2024

In the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024 , released earlier this week, UC Davis ranked 35th in the world in the broad category of the life sciences and medicine. Previous rankings, in 2023, placed campus at 38th globally in the same category.

Quacquarelli Symonds, or QS, is considered one of the most influential international authorities on university rankings. The campus was also ranked in each of the other broad categories of the rankings: natural sciences; engineering and technology; arts and humanities; and social sciences and management.

Campus was also recognized for its global leadership in the fields of veterinary science, and agriculture and forestry, which were ranked second in the world.

The university also had top-50 rankings in five other subjects:

  • environmental sciences, 23rd
  • geophysics, tied for 42nd
  • biological sciences, 43rd
  • geology, tied for 47th
  • development studies, tied for 49th

“These rankings underscore that UC Davis is the global leader in veterinary science and agriculture,” said Chancellor Gary S. May. “They also show that the campus provides a world-class education across academic disciplines, while conducting impactful research that advances understanding and solutions to the planet’s most pressing challenges.”

The rankings consider reputation among academics; reputation among employers; the citations and impact of academic papers from a university; and the diversity of a university’s international research network. In all, the 2024 rankings analyzed programs in 55 subjects at 4,982 institutions and ranked 1,559 universities across the world. This year, QS did not provide national rankings.

UC Davis and rankings

A world-class university, UC Davis is highly ranked for how it transforms students’ lives, the impact of its research, the excellence of its academic programs, its sustainability and more. The university performs self-evaluations and also appreciates the value of third-party assessments. However, ranking methods vary, change over time and can be subjective. UC Davis focuses on those rankings that most closely align with its mission and values — including serving the public good, inclusiveness and equity, and social mobility — and in national rankings looks most closely at its standing among public universities. UC Davis encourages prospective students and their families to weigh rankings among other factors in their college decision, talk with counselors and UC Davis admissions advisors, and, if possible, visit the campus.

The tickets, distributed at no cost online ahead of the event, were made available to students Monday and will open to members of the general public tomorrow.

The event will be presented live and outdoors twice on the Cruess Hall Makerspace Courtyard, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Tickets are on sale for $12 through April 13, and can be purchased online:

That’s why UC Davis Health is committed to reducing waste and increasing the sustainability of our organization. Nationwide, we are a recognized leader in creating more sustainable practices. We are among the Top 25 hospitals in the country for environmental sustainability by Practice Greenhealth for two years in a row.  UC Davis Health was also honored with the Greening the OR Recognition Award, the health system’s third time receiving the award.

Additionally, UC Davis Health received five designations in the Circles of Excellence, which honors up to 10 of the highest performing hospitals nationwide in various areas of sustainability. These areas included sustainable procurement, water, transportation, green building, and food.

These awards reflect the work of many individuals throughout our organization. At our most recent Sustainability Summit, we recognized sustainability leaders and progress throughout UC Davis Health, including using reusable isolation gowns in the pediatric intensive care unit and the emergency department, vastly reducing greenhouse gases produced during anesthesia, reducing energy consumption in operating rooms, and driving change throughout our clinics.

Each of these breakthroughs began with a suggestion from a UC Davis Health physician, nurse, faculty member, student, or staff member. To generate new waves of change, the newly formed Clinical Practice Council Sustainability Subcommittee launched the Sustainability Suggestion Box. Use it to share your ideas for creating more sustainable practices at UC Davis Health. Read more about the Sustainability Suggestion Box at https://sustainability.ucdavis.edu/get-involved , or scan this QR code.

We invite you to recycle here and at home! This month, Environmental Services announced a completely re-engineered recycling program. Led by project manager Julianna Moore, the planning and implementation of this program is a vast improvement that addresses every step that an item takes, from the moment you recycle the material until it reaches our waste partner Republic Services’ recycling plant. Learn more by watching the walk-through with Julianna.

Finally, join us for the Earth Month Celebration Event on the UC Davis Health campus in the Education Building Quad from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 17. Stop and pick up free produce from local farmers, meet our sustainability partners, take a free yoga class on the lawn at 12:10 p.m., and learn about more programs taking place across campus.

Sustainability is the responsibility of everyone in our organization, and many of you are leading by joining the Sustainability Committee and getting involved. If you are interested in helping, please email me at [email protected] .

We appreciate your efforts to reduce waste and to be a more sustainable member of our community at home and at work. Thank you!

Yours in health,

Kristina Cullen
