Step across Broad Street from Downtown Athens and you'll step back two centuries in time to the birthplace of public higher education in America. Did you know? The University of Georgia actually predates the city of Athens. The University was chartered in 1785 and classes began in 1801, a full five years before Athens was chartered in 1806.
The wrought iron Arch, forged just a few blocks north at a foundry that's now The Foundry music venue at Graduate Athens hotel, is the traditional entrance to campus. You'll probably quickly notice that student veer to either side of the Arch rather than passing underneath-- that's due to an old superstition that students must wait until after graduation to walk through the Arch, else they won't graduate!
Early UGA presidents were Yale men and designed the original campus, now known as North Campus , after Yale. Far across the quad, facing the Arch, is Old College, the oldest building on campus. In the formative years of the University, students and faculty all lived, studied, and ate in this single building. What a long ways they've come over two hundred plus years!
Today, the University of Georgia campus is over 760 acres and contains some of the most popular visitor attractions and scenic spots in Athens, including:
Georgia Museum of Art
- Special Collections Building
- UGA Bookstore
- Sanford Stadium
The UGA Visitors Center has maps, self-guided tour materials, and offers daily guided tours.

Explore Athens
Quirky vibes. Southern charm.
Athenians like to describe Athens as a small town with big-city amenities. What they mean is no matter what your interests are, you can find people who share your passion. If you like art, Athens is home to Georgia’s state art museum , but it’s also home to galleries where you can volunteer and meet other artists. If you like sports, you can take in a football game at Sanford Stadium or join an adult soccer rec league. If you like music, you can check out big-name bands at the town’s storied music venues or find people to jam with on your back porch.
Arts and Culture
Athens is an artistic hotbed, from its world-renowned music scene, which spawned groups like R.E.M., Widespread Panic and the B-52s, to its multitude of offerings for those interested in visual art, crafts, theater, performance and much more. Catch a concert at one of several legendary music venues, enjoy art at local galleries, or nurture your creative side by taking a pottery class or showcasing your talents at the next open mic night.
The Outdoors Awaits
Located about an hour from hundreds of miles of trails nestled into the Blue Ridge Mountains and great kayaking and fishing, Athens is an ideal home base for those who want to spend their weekends in the wilderness. But there are plenty of places to get outside during the week, including more than 40 miles of natural surface, wooded hiking trails and a 4.5-mile mountain biking course. There’s also a 12-mile and growing network of paved multi-use trails connecting the park system to the university and downtown Athens.
Foodie Destination
Named one of the most Underrated Food Cities in the South by USA Today , Athens’ food scene can satisfy whatever craving you have, including gourmet and homestyle barbecue, authentic international cuisine and modern twists on Southern classics. With plenty of places to visit in the walkable downtown as well as surrounding neighborhoods, you’ll have a tough time deciding on your new favorite spot.
Appealing and Eclectic
Athens is outstanding by many measures:
- South’s Best College Town (Southern Living, March 2022)
- Coolest College Towns in America (The Discoverer, 2021)

Three former georgia southern eagles soaring into the weekend at 2024 club car championship.

Georgia Southern University is proudly representing at the 2024 Club Car Championship.
Three former Georgia Southern Eagles are playing in the Club Car Championship this week Steven Fisk (-9) holds a share of the lead after firing a 65 in the second round. Mason Williams and Ben Carr are heading into the weekend tied for 26th.
Carr, who got a sponsor's exemption, and Mason Williams, who had to qualify on Monday, are both thankful for their time in Statesboro.
"We've had a lot of guys come through there that can really play," Carr said. " I think it's shown in the last two days. Three Eagles in the field all playing well, says a lot about Coach Collins, and now he develops the players in the program. I mean, we've got a bunch of guys playing professional golf right now and that says a lot about who he is as a golf coach."
"It's a proud moment for our program and Georgia Southern in general," said Georgia Southern head golf Coach Carter Collins. "It's goosebumps looking at the leaderboard and tapping them as favorites and tracking them on the leaderboard and coming out here today. Definitely some goosebumps as they realize their dreams which is what this is really all about."
Both Carr and Williams have been close friends since their freshman year in Statesboro.
"Five years in college, we lived together. Obviously, played all the tournaments together. Traveling together in the summer to tournaments, so, yeah, we're very close. So, hopefully we get paired together," Carr said.
"Never really played together in any sort of event because in college you are always playing with other teams, but to play in the same event would be pretty special, it would be great," Williams said.
The third round of the Club Car Championship tees off at 8:05 a.m. Saturday morning. Carr tees off at 10:50 a.m., Williams tees off at 11 a.m., Steven Fisk tees off at 1:25 p.m.

Club Car Championship: How to watch on Golf Channel, storylines and more
A scenic view of The Landings Golf & Athletic Club.
Change Text Size
The Korn Ferry Tour’s domestic season kicks off in Savannah, Georgia, for the seventh playing of the Club Car Championship at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club. All four rounds of competition will air live on Golf Channel. Here’s what you need to know about the event and how to follow the action:
1. Strong Georgia roots
Fifteen players in the field played collegiately in the state of Georgia: nine from Georgia Tech (Shunyat Hak, Paul Haley II, Connor Howe, Chris Petefish, Seth Reeves, Ollie Schniederjans, Ross Steelman, Richy Werenski), four from University of Georgia (Erik Compton, Joey Garber, Trent Phillips, Spencer Ralston) and three from Georgia Southern (Ben Carr, Steven Fisk, Mason Williams). Additional players with local and regional ties to the area include Dawson Armstrong (born in Valdosta, Georgia), Emilio Gonzalez (a resident of St. Simons Island, Georgia), Billy Kennerly (plays from Alpharetta, Georgia) among others. Columbus, Georgia, native Ben Carr will also make his Korn Ferry Tour debut as a sponsor exemption this week.
2. The season-long race heats up
Mason Andersen sits atop the Korn Ferry Tour Points List through the first six events of the season after logging three top-10 finishes, highlighted by his first career title at last month’s 117 Visa Argentina Open presented by Macro. With the win in Argentina, Andersen earned an exemption for The Open Championship 2024 at Royal Troon. The top 30 finishers on the Points List at the conclusion of the Korn Ferry Tour Championship earn PGA TOUR cards for the 2025 season. Five players who finished T8 or better in this event last year went on to earn PGA TOUR cards at season’s end: David Skinns (Winner), Tom Whitney (T2), Max Greyserman (T6), Jacob Bridgeman (T6) and Nicholas Lindheim (T8).
3. Young talent continues to rise
All six players to win an event this season are first-time winners on the Korn Ferry Tour (Jeremy Paul, Aldrich Potgieter, Isaiah Salinda, Kevin Velo, Mason Andersen and Taylor Dickson). South African Potgieter, the youngest Korn Ferry Tour member this season, won The Bahamas Great Abaco Classic at The Abaco Club in January and became the youngest winner on either the Korn Ferry Tour or PGA TOUR since 1931 (19 years, 4 months and 11 days). Two weeks later at the Astara Golf Championship presented by Mastercard, Potgieter recorded a second-round 11-under 59 to become the youngest player to record a sub-60 round in a PGA TOUR-sanctioned event.
4. An indicator of future success?
Many past champions of the Club Car Championship have gone on to have success on the PGA TOUR. Reigning champion Skinns has posted two top-10 finishes on the PGA TOUR in 2024, including a T7 finish at last week’s Texas Children’s Houston Open. Sam Burns, who won the inaugural playing in 2018 as a rookie, earned his first PGA TOUR card in 2018 and has notched five PGA TOUR titles and 32 top-10 finishes in 141 starts. Adam Svensson won the 2021 Club Car Championship and currently has one PGA TOUR victory at The RSM Classic 2022.

Seton Hall erased a seven-point deficit in the final three minutes of the NIT Championship Game for a 79-77 win over Indiana State on Thursday night inside Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The Pirates captured their first NIT title since 1953 with a win in a thrilling matchup between teams who just missed the NCAA Tournament cut and were awarded No. 1 seeds in their regions.
Dre Davis scored the go-ahead layup with 16 seconds remaining for Seton Hall, and his team got a stop on the defensive end to seal the win. Indiana State guard Ryan Conwell missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer that would've been the game-winner.
Seton Hall star Al-Amir Dawes scored a game-high 24 points, and Kadar Richmond added 21 in the win as the Pirates finish with a 25-12 record.
