Guide to securing a UK tourist visa from India

If you are an Indian national wanting to travel to the UK on a short-term basis for a holiday, or to visit friends and family, you will need to obtain a UK tourist visa from India in advance of travelling. If you arrive in the UK without a visa you will be refused leave to enter.

This guide sets out the process for applying for a UK tourist visa from India, including the basis upon which you can make an application, the eligibility and suitability criteria.

You can apply for a UK standard tourist visa from India if you want to visit Britain as a tourist or for many other temporary purposes including business. Examples include:

  • for leisure reasons, ie, for a holiday, or to visit friends and family
  • to carry out a business activity, ie; for a meeting, conference or seminar
  • to take part in a specific sporting or creative event
  • to do academic research
  • to receive private medical treatment, or even to donate an organ to an identified recipient in the UK

You cannot however undertake paid work on the UK tourist visa, nor can you study, save except where this is not the main reason for your visit and for no longer than 30 days. Further, as a visitor to the UK, you will not have any recourse to public funds.

What are the eligibility criteria for a UK tourist visa from India?

As a visitor under a UK tourist visa from India you must meet the requirements of the Visitor Rules, even if you are travelling as, for example, a family group, a tour group or a school party. You must demonstrate the following:

  • A genuine intention to visit, ie; that you will leave the UK at the end of your visit and you will not live in the UK for extended periods through frequent or successive visits, or make the UK your main home.
  • You are genuinely seeking entry for a purpose that is permitted under your visa category, and that you will not undertake any prohibited activities as set out under the Visitors Rules, eg, paid work.
  • You have sufficient funds to cover all reasonable costs in relation to your visit, without working or accessing public funds. This includes the cost of your return or onward journey, any costs relating to dependants, and the cost of any planned activities such as private medical treatment.

There are additional eligibility requirements for visitors under 18, those coming to the UK for private medical treatment, those coming to the UK as an organ donor, or for academics seeking a 12 month visitor visa.

Why might my application be refused?

There are various suitability requirements when applying for a UK tourist visa from India. In particular, your application may be refused in the following circumstances:

  • Where false representations have been made, false documents or information have been submitted, or material facts have not been disclosed during the course of your application.
  • Where you fail to produce satisfactory identity documents or provide other information. This includes where you fail, without reasonable excuse, to attend an interview or provide biometric information.
  • Where you have previously breached UK immigration laws, eg, by being an illegal entrant, overstaying or using deception in a previous application, and/or you are currently banned from re-entering the UK.
  • Where you are currently the subject of a deportation order or a decision to make a deportation order
  • Where your exclusion from the UK is considered to be conducive to the public good, eg, previous conduct, character, associations, or other reasons, make it undesirable to grant your application. Reference here will be made to recent or serious criminal convictions.

How do I apply for a UK tourist visa from India?

If you are applying for a UK tourist visa from India, you will need to do so online. As part of your online application, you will need to book an appointment at a visa application centre in India. You will also need to pay the appropriate fee.

At your appointment you will need to submit your biometric information, ie; your fingerprints and a digital photograph of your face. You will also need to take with you the following information:

  • Confirmation of your appointment and a receipt for any fee(s) paid.
  • A print-out of your application form, signed and dated.
  • Your passport or valid travel document, with at least 1 page that is blank on both sides.
  • Supporting documents. If the originals are not in English you must provide the original documents, as well as a translation in English.

You may withdraw your application at before a decision is made. The request must be made in writing or email to the visa application centre where your application was submitted. When notice of withdrawal is received, no decision will be made on the application and your passport, and any other documents, will be returned. However, your fee will not be refunded.

When can I apply for a UK tourist visa from India?

The earliest you can apply for a UK tourist visa from India is 3 months before you travel. Once you have paid your fee, you should then get a decision within three weeks, although in some cases it can take longer. The visa application centre will be able to provide you with the processing time for your particular type visa.

How long will my UK tourist visa from India last?

The maximum length of stay under a standard visitor visa is usually up to 6 months, although this can be for longer where you are coming to the UK for private medical treatment or academic research.

A long-term visitor visa lasting 2, 5 or ten years may be available where you need to visit the UK regularly over a longer period, though you can only stay for a maximum of 6 months for each visit.

Within the period for which your UK tourist visa from India visa is valid, you may enter and leave the UK multiple times, unless the visa is endorsed as a single or dual-entry visa.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can you do when you have a uk tourist visa.

Since the tourist visa is a nothing but UK Visitor visa , you can perform activities that are covered under this. These include sightseeing, visit friends/family, medical treatment, take part in charity/voluntary unpaid work provided that it does not last more than 30 days, business-related activities such as attending meetings, training, as well as sports-related activities.

What are the reasons for a UK tourist visa to be rejected in India?

Normally, the visa applications are rejected for the following reasons -

  • Wrong information in the application form / fake documents submitted
  • Insufficient funds to support the stay
  • Irrelevant or unconvincing travel itinerary
  • Criminal history in the past
  • Previous visa rejections from the UK or any other countries
  • Passport nearing expiry/invalid
  • Incomplete application form

How many funds do I need to show for a UK tourist visa if I have a sponsor there to accommodate me?

There is no exact amount you will need to show for obtaining the visa. The purpose of the financial documents is to prove that you can support your stay, as well to show your stability and expense patterns. As a result, if you have a sponsor, you do not need to show funds except for your basic expenses. You will, however, require an invitation letter from the sponsor showing that you will be staying with them and that he will be sponsoring you and the funds.

Can I get a UK tourist visa after a family visit visa was refused?

This totally depends on a few factors such as the reason why you were rejected the first time, the integrity of your new application, etc. If your previous application was refused due to technical reasons such as insufficient funds, insufficient proof, etc, as long as your situation has changed, and you have enough funds, and correct documentation, etc, you will have limited problems in the application. However, if you had been rejected due to criminal history, or other major reasons, chances are that you will be rejected again.

Do I need an invitation letter to apply for a UK tourist visa?

No, you do not need an invitation letter to get a UK tourist permit. Unless you are being sponsored by a family member or friend, you will not require this. However, if you are applying for a UK visitor visa for a friend or a family visit, you will need an invitation letter. Alternately, even if you are applying to take part in tourism, submitting an invitation letter may help your application.

Does a UK tourist visa need medical insurance?

No, you will not need medical insurance to travel to the UK on a tourist permit. Since the visa is for less than 6 months, it is not mandatory. However, since healthcare can be expensive in the UK, it is suggested that you obtain insurance before traveling.

Can I apply for a UK tourist visa along with a schengen tourist visa?

No. The Schengen and UK have different types of permit. The United Kingdom is no longer a part of the Schengen region. Also, if you apply for the two visas at the same time, you will have to submit the passport for stamping. This will not be physically possible. As a result, you will have to apply for one of them first, and then apply for the other one after that. If you have aUK stamp, your chances of getting a Schengen visa will be higher, and vice versa.

What is the eligibility condition for a 2,5,or 10 year UK tourist visa?

To get the 10-year tourist permit, you will have to apply for the Long term visitor visa. This can be given for 2,5, or up to 10 years. Unlike the short term type, these are harder to get. You will need to provide sufficient proof that you have a need to visit the UK multiple times over the years. Also, you’ll have to convince them that your motive of visit over the years will not be changed. Also, you will need to submit proof that you will return to your home country after each visit.

Will a US visit visa help in getting a UK tourist visa?

Not directly. You will not receive a UK permit just because you possess a B1/B2 visa. However, if you have been stamped with US permit, your travel history becomes stronger and your credibility is higher as long as you have not overstayed in the US, or have been charged with other offenses. The US permit can then be a factor in convincing the consular officer processing your UK application.

What is important to include in a cover letter for a UK tourist visa?

As per the requirements, you will not need a covering letter for the UK tourist permit. It has been clearly mentioned that you should not attach documents that are not required in the application. However, for visa types that require a covering letter, they would usually require your basic details, the purpose of the visit, duration and other details of the visit, as well as the source of funds.

When can I reapply for a UK tourist visa?

There is no official waiting time to reapply for a UK tourist visa. When your application has been refused, you will receive a letter explaining the reason behind it. Depending on this, you will have to make sure that you have corrected the faults in the previous application and apply for a new one. It is suggested that you wait for a sufficient time to prove that your situations or documents have been improved for the new application.

Are criminal checks carried out on all UK tourist visa applicants?

Criminal checks are not usually done for a tourist visa. However, it is important to mention it in the application form if you have had criminal convictions in the past. The UK have the right to check your criminal record if required. If you have lied in the application form about any convictions, your application will be rejected, and you may even be banned for up to 10 years.

Can I get the UK tourist visa even if I am unemployed?

Yes, you can get a UK tourist visa even if you don’t have a job. Employment is not a requirement for the permit. However, you will need to prove that you have sufficient funds to support your stay in the UK. You will also have to show that you have some ties in your country that will ensure that you return back to it. These can be proof of any property, or education, etc.

Can you apply for a UK tourist visa after a month once you leave the UK?

Yes, you can apply for another tourist permit after you leave the UK post your visa expiry. There is no rule on waiting time to reapply for the visa. However, keep in mind that your chances of it getting approved depend on the application, genuinity, as well as your previous stay in the UK. Now that you have already visited the UK on a tourist visa, the visa officers will look into your stay and the period. If you had failed to follow any of your visa regulations, you will be rejected.

How can I extend my UK tourist visa?

Normally, you cannot extend your UK tourist visa. You will have to leave the country and then reapply for another visa. However, under extreme circumstances such as unforeseeable emergency reasons, you will be permitted to have an additional 14 day stay in the country. These include medical reasons, issues where your home country is not safe, etc. Once this is done, you will have to leave the country no matter what.

What are the chances of denial of UK tourist visa if you have no travel history and are travelling for the first time?

The chances of denial are solely dependant on your application and the documents. Since you are traveling for the first time, you do not have any history of visa rejections. As a result, you are free from that. However, the rest of the factors still affect you such as the authenticity of the documents, solid purpose, funds, correct information, etc

Is it necessary to submit my UK tourist visa application online?

Yes, for applications for the UK permit from outside the UK, it has to be made online. The offline application is not followed anymore. For the online application, you will have to create an account on the visa and immigration services website, or on the beta Visa4Uk website. You can then proceed with the application based on the instructions.

What are the documents required from a sponsor for a UK tourist visa and how much bank balance is required?

If you are being sponsored by someone for your UK tourist permit, they will have to submit a few documents. They will have to submit an invitation letter stating their details, and also confirm that you will be staying with them and that they will be supporting your stay. For the bank balance, there is no specific amount to be shown. The UK government requires that you have sufficient funds to support your stay. This includes food, accommodation, travel, and other basic necessities.

The United Kingdom is amongst the most frequently visited destinations for travellers in the world. What adds to UK’s allure is its proximity with the Schengen region that opens up seamless tourism opportunities for travellers if they combine their UK travel with a visit to continental Europe, to behold its many brilliant landscapes and landmarks. In order to make your UK visa application process hassle-free and convenient, UK Visas and Immigration and VFS Global offer you an exclusive array of value-added services.

This is in addition to the Premium Lounge facility and the On Demand Mobile Visa services available at the UK visa application centres.

Choose from any of these time-saving services:

Keep Your Passport When Applying

If you need to apply for multiple visas, such as a UK / Schengen combination, or wish to make a short trip while waiting for your UK visa to be processed,

you will find the ‘Keep My Passport When Applying’ service at the UK Visa Application Centre very helpful. After enrolling your biometrics and submitting your visa application at the UK visa application centre, if you have opted for this service, your passport is handed back to you.

This is extremely useful if you want to carry on with another country’s visa application formalities, as this service allows you to keep your passport with you.

You can keep your passport with you until the UK embassy makes a decision regarding your visa, one way or the other.

Once the decision is made, you will be called once again to complete the procedures as required by the embassy.

The visa application centres of UK and Schengen countries are often conveniently located next to each other at the VFS Global centres. This facility enables applicants to finish the visa formalities of multiple countries along with that of UK in a single day.

Super Priority and Priority Visas

Need a visa at short notice? The Super Priority and Priority Visa services are options for those who need to travel urgently.

For Priority Visa applicants, the process takes 3–5 days, while for Super Priority Visa applicants, this speeds up to a single business day. Super Priority Visa Service is available at VFS Global’s UK visa application centres in New Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. Do note that the eligibility for application for either of these services may vary.

All You Need To Know About Getting a UK Visa On An Indian Passport

Heathrow Airport, London, UK

Photo of All You Need To Know About Getting a UK Visa On An Indian Passport by M

A visit to United Kingdom heads the wishlist of most travellers. With its tourist friendly vibe and a jaw-dropping array of cultural pursuits, the country is one of the most visited destinations worldover.

Before my first visit to the country, my mind was mostly occupied with how many jackets and pairs of socks to take with me on my trip! However, the looming task of putting together my UK visa application was the great hurdle that stood between my aspirations and their realisation.

Adding to the pressure was the fact that applying for a UK visa on an Indian passport is known to be a meticulous task with a fair amount of paperwork and planning involved. So based on my experience, I've charted out the procedure to apply for this visa, along with some tips and answers to common questions for fellow travellers to refer to! Here goes -

What Is A UK Visa & When Do I Need It

A visa to United Kingdom is an official endoresment issued in your passport, allowing the holder to enter the country, stay in it for a stipulated period of time and then exit the country.

Typically, a UK visa is issued for a period of 6 months for Indian passport holders. The visa is allows 'multiple entry', that is to say, you may enter and exit the country more than once during the 6 months for which the visa is valid.

A tourist visa for UK allows the holder to not only travel across the United Kingdom but also allows entry to the countries of Wales , Scotland and Northern Ireland , as well as the archipelago of Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. Pretty neat right?

A Guide To A UK Visa Application for Indian Passport Holders

First step - Confirm the visa category that best suits you. For tourists, the Standard Visitor visa applies. You can double-check suitability on the UK governments visa and immigration forum .

Next, you will have to fill a form online on a UK government-run forum called AccessUK. This has to be filled in English. The registration process is pretty basic and allows you to sign in to the forum to access your applicaiton. The application form does not need to be filled in one go. It can be filled partially and then saved online, till you are ready to submit it. Click here to view the Standard UK Visa application . You can fill the form once you have confirmed your ability to be present for your visa appointment at a centre in one of the following cities - Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cochin, Goa, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jalandhar, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Mysore, New Delhi, Pune or Trivandrum.

Keep your passport handy while filling in the application since you will need to give details of all your past international travel.

Once the application process is complete, you can select an appointment time and date as per your convenience. There is one primary agency that you will have to liase with during the process of your visa application, which is VFS Global, the official partner of UK Visa and Immigration. They schedule visa appointments where the applicant submits the supporting documents that go with the application. Their centres also process the biometric details of the applicant.

There is an option to pay online for the visa application. It is best to avail this in order to save time at the VFS centre when you visit for your appointment.

Note - The VFS website urges applicants to make sure they do not have any injuries on their fingers or henna on their fingertips when they schedule their appointment since this hampers with the biometric detailing of digital fingerprints at the VFS centres.

Documents To Be Carried For The Appointment

The VFS website has a complete document checklist , which I have fleshed out below with some added details and tips. Wherever possible, carry originals as well as copies.

Appointment Confirmation - The most important document to be carried on the day of your appointment. Without a printed confirmation, you will not be admitted inside the VFS centre where your appointment is to be held.

Payment Receipt - If you made an online payment for your visa, be sure to carry a printout of the receipt. This is important to avoid any confusion during the appointment, where proof of payment needs to be filed with your other documents,

Passport - Well, nothing is going to come out of your grand visa quest if you leave behind your passport. This will be examined as ID proof at the entrance to the VFS centre, and will be attached to your application when it is sent to the UK Embassy for processing.

Make sure to keep a scanned/printed copy of your passport with yourself before you submit it in. This can come in use at a time when your original passport is being processed and thus temporarily out of your possession.

Travel addicts beware - there should be at least 1 page blank on either side of your passport when you apply.

Flight Tickets - At this stage, you need to have your flight tickets in place. This serves as concrete evidence of the finality of your travel plans and indicates whether this is in tandem the details in your application.

Accomodation Arrangements - Your application needs to be supplemented with details of your hotel bookings. In case you are staying with friends or family, you need to add a letter of invitation signed by your host. The letter must indicate the intention of your host to put you up for the duration of your stay and explicity state the complete address of your host. You can add the passport details of your host to this document for good measure.

The UK can be costly to stay in, especially when you are going for a more extended period, such as attending a university. But worry not, there are still many affordable and student-friendly options for accommodation in the country. And how to find them? You can contact amber for their services. So whether you are searching for London Student accommodation or Manchester student accommodation , they provide you with free and personalised assistance to help you find your perfect abode!

Letter of Identification - If you are a school/college student applying for a UK visa, make sure adda copy of your student ID and a letter from the school/college/university office acknowledging your status as a student. Also add some recent marksheets to prove your involvement with the institution.

For working professionals, you need to attach a letter from your employers acknowledging your status as a company employee.

Freelancers can write a cover letter detailing their employment status along with copies of contracts of recent assignments, if available.

Financials - The purpose of sharing financial details is to prove the applicant's ability to meet the costs of the trip. Take copies of your bank statements, your pay slips, joint accounts with family members which have a substantial balance, fixed deposits, proof of ownership of assets such as land.

You can also give details of the sponsor of your trip. To cover my erratic bank statements (the consequence of working as a freelancer), I had my sister write me a sponsorship letter in which she agreed to fund my trip and also shared copies of her pay slip, bank statements and passport details.

Since the consulate gives no clarity in terms of what how much balance they expect to see in your name, it's best to have a consistent figure of at least 2-3 lakhs for 7-10 day long trip.

Accommodation & Assets in India - It is best to add papers of land/house ownership and/or a tenancy agreement to the application. This is an assurance to the consulate that the applicant does not plan to migrate to the UK on the basis of a tourist visa and has a home to return to.

Marital Status/ Family In India - Being a single girl, I did not need to worry about proving my non-existent marital status. But I did add copies of my parents' passports to show proof of family in India.

My parents, when they applied for their UK visas, attached a copy of their marriage certificate and also put in copies of ID proofs belonging to me and my brother.

In my experience, these documents about family in India are scrutinized mostly for first time applicants. I did not add these the second time I applied for a UK visa and faced no trouble at all.

Note - Make sure you provide a translation for any document that is not in English, such as agricultural land ownership papers, ration cards etc.

How Long Does It Take For The Visa To Arrive?

Visa application are settled within 15 working days. VFS offers Priority and Super Priorty visa services which speeds up the processing time. One has to pay a considerable sum of money over and above the standard visa fees to avail of this facility.

Why Was My Visa Rejected

Assuming you submitted all the required documents, a rejection could happen for one of the following reasons -

Incorrect format - Did you put in your documents chronologically? Did you make sure they were printed clearly? You application and supplementary documents should be organised and easy to read for the officers in-charge.

Insufficient Funds - If the visa authorities are not convinced of your ability to bear the cost of your trip, they can reject your application. Suspicious activty such as your bank statement reflecting a deposit of a large sum of money just prior to your visa appointment could be one reason.

Doubtful Motives - If the visa authorities are not convinced about the motive behind your visit, they can reject your application on the grounds that you potentially appear to be harbouring intentions of settling down in United Kingdom.

Note - A UK visa, when rejected, comes with a detailed letter from the embassy explaining the cause behind the rejection.

Que : How do I collect my passport and documents?

While submitting your application, you can opt to receive your paspsort and papers via courier. If you wish to collect them in person, you can come to the VFS office along with the acknowledgment receipt you recieve at the time of submisison. VFS will alert you via email once your papers are ready for collection. You can also opt for SMS alerts.

Que : Can I apply a second time if my first application got rejected?

Ans : Yes, you may apply again. In any subsequent applications, you will be asked to give details of your past applications and the reason for rejection.

Que : How close to my travel dates can I apply for a visa?

Ans : Upto 3 months prior to your departure date.

Que : Do I get a refund if my visa gets rejected?

Ans : No, there is no scope for getting a refund in case your visa gets rejected. This is a risk one has to take while applying.

Que : Am I expected to get a TB test done before filing my visa application?

Ans : This is a prerequisite for applicants from certain countries, including India. However, the test reports are to be submitted with you rvisa application only if you are applying for visa for a period longer than 6 months . You can read more this on the official website of Gov.UK .

Que : Can I sign up for a short-term educational course while vacationing in UK?

Ans : The Standard Visitor visa allows you to study for 30 days, provided this is not the main reason for yout visit. The course must be run by an approved organisation that is either licensed or accredited, or it can be taught at a listed educational institution. To know the UK government's official stand on this, click here .

All in all, if you devote a decent amount of time, attention and effort to your application, the process will be smooth and it won't be long before you find yourself boarding your flight out of the country and right into your UK holiday!

New Schengen Visa Rules for Indian Visitors: Key Questions Answered

Peden Doma Bhutia , Skift

April 23rd, 2024 at 5:39 AM EDT

Destinations value Indian travelers, but lengthy visa processing times lasting months act as significant deterrents. The adoption of these new regulations by European authorities reflects a proactive effort to tackle these concerns, aiming to boost tourism flow.

Peden Doma Bhutia

The European Commission has introduced a new visa “cascade” regime for Indian nationals applying for Schengen visas in India. This regime looks to offer longer-term, multi-entry Schengen visas, based on the applicant’s travel history.

Indian travel agents had been complaining of Schengen visa delays as a major challenge to the summer travel rush from India.

  • How does one qualify for the longer duration visas?

The European Commission can issue a two-year multiple-entry visa after a traveler “has obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years.” This demonstrates a positive travel history and compliance with previous visa regulations.

Subsequently, after granting the two-year visa, authorities may issue a five-year visa if the passport has has adequate validity remaining.

  • What benefits do holders of these extended visas enjoy?

During the validity period of these visas, holders can enjoy travel rights equivalent to visa-free nationals within the Schengen area, allowing for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

  • Which countries are part of the Schengen area?

The Schengen area comprises 29 European countries, including 25 European Union member states: Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland, and Sweden. Additionally, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland are also part of the Schengen area.

  • Are there any restrictions or conditions to these visas?

Schengen visas do not grant the right to work within the Schengen area and are for short stays only. Additionally, the visas are not purpose-bound, providing flexibility for travel within the specified period.

Industry Take

Skift also spoke to players in the Indian outbound travel industry to understand what has changed in the new Schengen visa rules.

  • How is this different from the earlier visas that Schengen countries offered? Don’t they already offer multi-entry visas with longer duration to Indians?

Mahendra Vakharia, managing director of Pathfinders Holidays, said there was no standard policy of Schengen states for issuing these long-term visas earlier. Switzerland, France, Netherlands, Italy and Spain usually issued long-term visa, but it was all subjective. “With this new policy it should be a standard rule now,” Vakharia said.

  • Travelers mainly complain of longer processing times, has that changed?

Here too, there is no standard processing time as it varies from country to country, according to Vakharia. “France and Spain have been processing visas within four days, and then there’s Croatia, which takes 60 days,” he said.

Processing time will not change as of now, it will take time for the visa rules to be enforced, said an industry source, while highlighting that the visa would be especially useful for corporate travelers.

What Promoted The Move?

Speaking on the possible motivations, Vakharia acknowledged various reasons, including administrative capacity constraints at embassies to cater to the huge inflow of applications.

“As there is an overwhelming demand from Indian travelers, the process of securing visa appointments has posed significant challenges , especially for travelers residing in cities lacking VFS Global centers,” he said.

The European Commission said in an statement that the decision reflects the EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility, aimed at fostering comprehensive cooperation on migration policy. Facilitating people-to-people contacts is a key aspect of this agenda, acknowledging India’s importance as an EU partner.

The decision also reflects a realization of the strong economic benefits derived through the spending power of Indian tourists. As Vakharia aptly puts it, “Why let go of the Golden Indian Goodie Bag?”

Zurich, Switzerland

  • Visiting Europe is getting easier for Indian passport holders
  • A new 'cascade' visa scheme will allow frequent travellers to get a multi-year multiple-entry Schengen visa
  • However, you need to meet certain criteria to be able to apply for this 'cascade' visa

There's good news for Indian passport holders who want to visit Europe this year on. The European Union is looking to ease Schengen visa processes for Indian tourists.

European Union adopts more favourable Schengen visa rules for Indians

Indian Nationals can now apply for a multiple entry Schengen visa with longer validity

On 18 April 2024, the European Commission adopted specific rules on the issuing of multiple entry visas to Indian nationals, which are more favourable than the standard rules of the Visa Code that applied to date. This new visa ‘cascade’ regime for Indian nationals residing in India who apply for Schengen (short-stay) visas in India will provide easier access to visas with multi-year validity for travellers with an established travel history, if the passport validity allows.

According to the newly adopted visa “cascade” regime for India, Indian nationals can now be issued long-term, multi-entry Schengen visas valid for two years after having obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years. The two-year visa will normally be followed by a five-year visa, if the passport has sufficient validity remaining. During the validity period of these visas, holders enjoy travel rights equivalent to visa-free nationals.

This decision comes in the context of strengthened relations under the EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility, which seeks comprehensive cooperation on migration policy between the EU and India, with facilitation of people-to-people contacts being of key aspect due to the importance of India as a partner for the EU.

Schengen visas allow the holder to travel freely in the Schengen area for short stays of a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day period. The visas are not purpose-bound, but they do not grant the right to work. The Schengen area consists of 29 European countries (of which 25 are EU states): Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland and Sweden, along with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
