From the moment my sisters and I were picked up from lunch in two beautifully restored 1950’s Chevrolets and driven to NostalgiCar workshop we had an amazing time. The workshop/garage is a hidden gem in a local neighborhood outside of Old Havana. Not only did we get to see some restoration work going on but we met the charismatic owner Julio Alvarez. Words can not describe the passion, joy and knowledge Julio shared with us about his family business. We have a new appreciation for what it takes to be an entrepreneur in Cuba. This stop was one of our highlights of our trip and we are not even car enthusiasts ...

I first contacted Nidalys 4 months before our cruise to Havana. I wrote what we wanted to do and she made it happen.. We met the Julio our driver at the Hotel Raquel 2 blocks from the cruise terminal , and Nadine a 1955 Bel Air was our ride.We were guided to a great spot to watch the 9:00 Cannon Shot at the Fortress of San Carlos de Cabana which is not on any cruise itinerary...

Examples of Private Havana Classic Car Tour Itineraries

Option one – malecon, vedado, miramar and revolution square.

This one-hour Havana classic car tour will take you along the seafront promenade known as the Malecon, a hive of activity throughout the day, which stretches for eight kilometers from the mouth of the harbor in Old Havana to the Vedado neighborhood. Here you’ll discover a more modern part of the city, developed during the first half of the twentieth century and home to many bars and restaurants along La Rampa. Miramar meanwhile is one of the capital’s more affluent districts, home to some very fine mansions and churches. The tour continues to Revolution Square, a huge space dominated by a memorial to national hero José Martí, before dropping you back at the tour start point.

Option Two – Malecon, El Cristo Statue and El Morro Fort

Also scheduled to last one hour, our second Havana classic car tour option begins, like our first option, with a drive along the Malecon promenade. You’ll head to the hilltop location of the El Cristo de La Habana statue in the suburb of Casablanca. The large Carrara marble sculpture of Jesus Christ was commissioned in 1953, and rises to a height of around 20 meters. Returning towards Old Havana, this Havana classic car tour visits El Morro fort, which has helped defend Havana’s harbor for centuries since 1589, before returning to the tour start point.

Option Three - Vedado, Miramar, Colon Cemetery, Revolution Square, Malecon, El Cristo Statue and El Morro Fort

This two-hour Havana classic car tour takes in all the sights visited as part of both the option one and option two tours, including the Malecon, Vedado and Miramar districts, the El Cristo Statue in Casablanca, and El Morro fort on the harbor front. In addition, your chauffeur-driven tour will pass by the Colon Cemetery in Vedado. Created in 1876, it is known for its exquisite memorials, and boasts more than 500 impressive mausoleums belonging to some of the most important families in Cuba.

Our fourth option for our convertible classic car rides lasts three hours, providing you with enough time to explore all that is included in our two-hour tour above, with time for the chance to discover Fusterlandia on the outskirts of Havana too. This combined fishing village and outdoor art gallery was the brain child of one man – resident artist José Fuster. He began to decorate him home with elaborate mosaic style forms, before moving on to his neighbors’ properties, and this fantasyland of the imagination now incorporates more than 80 buildings.

We found our car on the Avenida de la Misiones outside the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes.   You will find classic cars available for Havana vintage car tours in this area and also around the main square.  You can also book Havana classic car tours online ( check here for prices  ) or you can usually book Havana tours in old cars with your casa particular owner.

In total, we spent around 90 minutes and do a drive-by of all the main sites.

Capitolio Nacional, Havana – the Capitol Building

The first stop on our Havana vintage car tour is simply a drive-by.  The Capitol Building was closed for renovations while we were in Cuba, so drive-bys like this are all that we can manage.  Building work began in 1926, it took 5000 workers three years to build.  The Cuban Congress resided here until 1959, since then it’s been the home of the Cuban Academy of Sciences. The Capitol building in Havana is now open.

Hotel Saratoga Havana

Almost directly opposite is the Hotel Saratoga.  You can make it your residence for a while too – Push the boat out with unlimited luxury and lifestyles of the rich and famous, their website is here.

We drive past, but don’t stop at Cementario Colon and come to our first stop on the Havana Convertible Tour – Revolution Square.

Plaza de La Revolucion – Revolution Square, Havana

The Plaza de la Revolucion is a major stop for all Havana old car tours.  It is famous for the monument to the father of Cuban Independence, Jose Marti and the murals of Che Guevara and Camil Cienfuegos. Visiting Havana’s Revolution Square is one of the best things to do in Havana , make sure you don’t miss it!

The square was named Plaza Civica until the 1959 Revolution, today it’s where mass rallies are held.  It certainly looks different a few days later when we arrive as part of the May Day Parade – that’s right on 1 st  May, it’s Workers Day in Cuba and we joined in the parade.

John Lennon Park, Havana

Huh?  Yep, that’s what we thought too.  We’re in the neighbourhood of Vedado now and our next stop is John Lennon Park.  There’s the Yellow Submarine Club on the corner of the park.  We find John, or at least a statue of him, sitting on a bench in the middle of the park.

The statue was unveiled on 8 th  December 2000, on the 20 th  anniversary of Lennon’s murder.  If the statue looks a little strange it’s because the signature round glasses are missing.  Stolen perhaps.   Still, it adds to the bizarreness of the park.

As Beatlemania swept the world, Cuba banned the Fab Four.  Castro held the ban in place until 1964, declaring that they were the epitome of vulgar consumerism.  In December 2000, he unveiled the statue, having reimaged Lennon as a political dissident who was dedicated to freeing the working classes.

“What makes him great in my eyes is his thinking, his ideas,” said Castro. “I share his dreams completely. I too am a dreamer who has seen his dreams turn into reality.”

Hotel Nacional, Havana

Our next drive-by is the famous Hotel Nacional – where a mojito on the terrace at sunset is the thing to do. It’s iconic, THE place for a sundowner Mojito, in lazy, laid-back Vedado  > It also has some pretty fancy rooms too – check out prices and availability now.

Driving the Malecon on a Classic Car Tour in Havana

Havana’s promenade is the famous Malecon.  Hitting the Malecon is absolutely one of the best things to do in Havana.  Whether it’s promenading along with people and classic car watching, this is the place to be at sunset.  We take a drive along, considering how spectacular the buildings could be here if they were not falling to pieces.

Still, the sunset is pretty amazing.

And there is something just so Cuban about watching the light play on the buildings as the classic cars drive past.

Classic car Havana tour prices will depend on where you want to go and what type of car you want to travel in.  It will also depend on whether you prebook, and how good your negotiating skills are.  On the street, you can pay around US$30 for an hour-long tour.  We paid US$40 – that’s US$10 per person to take a Cuban Classic Car Tour of Havana for four of us.

A 30 min cigar factory tour could be book but is only available from Monday to Fridays as workers have Saturday and Sunday off. Prices for prestigious Cuban cigar brands: from 7.00 to 22.00 CUC depending on the brand, size and strength. (The cigar factory tour price is: 10 CUC per person not included in the Havana city tour price).

– A brief stop at the metropolitan Almendares Park located between the Vedado district and Miramar. This is for sure an excellent place for those who appreciate an always green and natural forestry area for taking wonderful photos. It is mostly used by local people for family meetings, picnics, photography and religion rituals.

– Panoramic tour around some 1930’s, 1940’s and 1950’s neighborhoods such as: Miramar that it was the richest people area before the Revolution victory and the embassy are now days, Malecon promenade and  Vedado close to the American embassy and national hotel.

– A visit to Jose Fuster street artwork project which since the 1990’s has been the most significant open artwork neighborhood in Havana city inspired by the catalan artist Antonio Gaudi.

– A visit to Finca Vigia (Vigia Farm) where the American writer Ernest Hemingway used to live from 1939 to 1960, which is since 1962 the very first  Museum dedicated to the relevant writer and journalist. (Fees entrance: 5 CUC each)

– A short visit to Cojimar town where Hemingway used to keep his boat for fishing and he met Gregorio, an old locale fisherman who becomes later his inspiration for the famous novel The Old Man and the Sea. Stops for drinks.

One Day Tours Vinales From Havana.

  – A stop at Los Jazmines look out point for the stunning panoramic view of the Viñales Valley.

– A visit to an authentic tobacco farm and purchase of fresh cigars directly from the farmers manually made by them.

  – A short walking tour around the downtown area in Viñales town and pictures time.

  – A horseback riding tour (10 CUC per hour) for enjoying much more the unique scenery and landscape (optional).

  – The visit to the Indian Cave, which is an small cave located inside one of the monolithics of about 250 meters long. Part of the tour in this cave is by boat, so at some points of the day when the cave might be full of tourist clients can easily wait for up to one hour to jump on the boats. I recommend to make a decision on the tour day. The cover for getting in is 5 CUC per person (not included on the tour price).

  The order of these 3 programs may vary as it is a personalized tour for you or your family. Answers To Exchanging Money In Cuba From US Dollars To CUC For Cruise Ship Passengers :

1)  What is the exchange fee for converting US Dollars to CUC?  90%

The exchange at the Cuban banks or the airport is 87 %. That’s the officials Cuban government exchange rate from coast to coast. However if you pay our guides there in USD they will take them as you have said, 90 %, so 100 USD=90 CUC.

2)  Is it any different if you use British pounds?  About the same your call.

If you use British pound the guide in Cuba will check what is the current £ exchange rate and then you could pay in £ instead of CUC otherwise you could ask the guide to take you to a bank.

3)  Do you have to show your passport when converting money to CUC?

Yes, you have to show your passport every time you exchange money in Cuba. If you don’t want to take your passport with you the guide could use his personal identification instead.

4)  Do they post a list of rules for converting money to CUC on the wall somewhere that ourlines do’s and don’ts?  If so, what are they.

No, they don’t have at banks in Cuba any specific rule for exchanging money other than showing your passport, as that’s required.

The guides can have some money to exchange or bring your passports, we’ll have a fast easy place available if not. (I doubt it though, the guides usually have CUC’s on them for every tour.)

Did a day trip from Havana Cuba. Picked up in the morning and after 1,5 hours driving we got to the place we’re we met our guide Felipe. Felipe was very nice and knowledgeable and he showed us a great time. First day ever tarpon fishing and we managed to have fifteen of them airborne that day. Eight of which were landed. What an adventure!! I have been fly fishing for almost 20 years and this I would highly recommend for anyone looking for a fun day on the water.

I would like to recommend this company after the wonderful experience we had with them in Havana. We arrived on our cruise ship and met our Guide (Jesse) at the prearranged meeting point in the square opposite the cruise terminal to begin our day tour.

We started with a walking tour of old Havana and what can I say about our guide,his knowledge and attitude when showing us around the city were excellent . Jesse ensured we were introduced to all aspects of Cuban life in Havana, including the history and architecture of this wonderful city. The walking tour was followed by a trip around all the other areas of Havana in a classic American vintage car. It was excellent and again the information provided by Jesse was wonderful and informative. We have wonderful memories of our visit due to him. Hopefully we will be back in Cuba in the near future to explore even more. Again thanks for the great day and we will be happy to recommend this company to our friends.

  First Day Tour: BAY OF PIGS – ZAPATA NATIONAL PARK

  – Stop at Bay of Pigs located at Zapata National Park which includes places like: Australia town, which was Fidel Castro’s military headquarter during the invasion of Bay of Pigs in 1961, the crocodile exhibition farm (cost: 5USD/ CUC per person), a one hour speed boat tour (cost: 12USD/ CUC per person) around the Treasure lake with the visit to a very well represented Cuban aboriginal community in the middle of the lake, lunch time at a private local restaurant (cost: 15USD/ CUC per meal but big portions of food and more than 2 main courses each meal in this price) (exotic food you can not get in other parts of Cuba like: crocodile meat and crab ), panoramic views of the main war scenarios of the 1961 military invasion, snorkeling area in two different places (cost: free unless clients may want to pay for snorkel masks or an scuba diving tour) (Bay of Pigs and the fish cave, which is an ocean connected of 70 m depth and is full of colorful fish). Visit to the Bay of Pigs invasion museum (cost: 3USD/ CUC per person) (optional).

  – Arrival to Cienfuegos city and walking tour for about 40 min around the main square and high Street (UNESCO World Heritage site since 2005) with time for pictures and a panoramic tour around Punta Gorda, which was back in the 1940’s and 1950’s the city’s richest people neighborhood. Cienfuegos is a remarkable city from the architectural point of view and slightly different than other cities in Cuba as the city was previously established by French families.

  – Arrival to Trinidad is expected at 5 or 6 pm but that depends on the time people will spend at the other places already visited. After the arrival to Trinidad and the  accommodation place they will stay (arranged by the tour guide with prices (private houses) between 35 and 40USD/ CUC) a free time can be set before the dinner time and after that a show time at a traditional bar or show place. The dinner price can be around 17 per person just for the meal as drinks are paid separately. The tour guide company during the show time could be optional after the client decision.

  Second Day Tour: Trinidad

  – A morning walking tour for about 2 hours around the historic area, foundational place and most important buildings and museums in Trinidad, including the panoramic view from the city look out point. Stop for the traditional drink named Canchanchara, at the emblematic bar with the same name. Lunch time (around 16USD/ CUC per person) in a local and private restaurant suggested by the tour guide. A car trip along Los Ingenios valley, back in the 19th century the most prosperous sugar cane production area in Cuba and a UNESCO World Heritage site now days (this tours includes a visit to the Rhonda of an old sugar industry and the famously look out point Iznaga tower. Stop at Ancon beach on the way back to Trinidad for swimming time. The dinner place and show for the night time could be set up as it was the night before.

  Third day tour leaving Trinidad on the way to Santa Clara and then Havana city.

  – 7.00 am will be the to leave Trinidad on the way to Santa Clara which takes 2 hours and 30 min approximately. On the way clients will enjoy the magnificent Escambray mountain range scenery and stops for pictures could be done. The tour once we get Santa Clara includes: a visit to the Che Guevara memorial and mausoleum, the main square Leoncio Vidal and the armored train Che Guevara stopped during the big battle of Santa Clara in 1958. A place for lunch could be found on the way back to Havana City by the side of the road that makes for a classic quick lunch. The arrival to Havana will be about 5.00 pm.

Our little ones fished, released baby turtles, found many starfish and played on the most beautiful beach in the world. We invite you to take part in the care and protection of this wonderful species and to observe them at night on the beaches of this beautiful paradise, as they look for the ideal place in which to lay their eggs. At our hotel and in collaboration with the Marina Cayo Largo and the Commission for the Environment, an incubation area has been created for the turtles, which lay their eggs in high-risk places and require a minimum incubation period of 60 days, so that they can then be returned to their natural habitat in a magical ritual that you can share with us. We will stop for lunch in a traditional Russian restaurant, where you’ll be able to discover the country’s rich culinary heritage. After lunch, we will take you to the most historic site in Moscow: the Kremlin. We will show you around this city within a city, and you will visit the ancient Kremlin cathedrals, where generations of tsars were crowned and buried.

Then you will visit one of Moscow’s oldest and most fascinating museums - the Kremlin Armory. With its unique collections from the Tsar period: historical armor and weapons, Russian and European silver and gold tableware and jewelry, ancient state regalia, and ceremonial vestments, historic clothing, the carriages used by many of Russia’s tsars, and Fabergé eggs, it truly has something for everybody!

Within the Armory is another great treasure house - the Kremlin Diamond Fund, which hides the former Imperial treasury - the personal gem collections of Russia’s tsars - updated with more recently - discovered specimens. Here you will see the Great Imperial Crown made for Catherine the Great - which alone contains 5000 diamonds - along with other priceless cut and uncut diamonds and other precious stones, many with a fascinating history.
