Vietnam Wellness Tourism: Opportunities for Foreign Investors

The wellness tourism industry in Vietnam offers several untapped opportunities for foreign businesses in the hospitality, healthcare, and wellness domains. Vietnam is abundant in natural landscapes that provide attractive destinations for tourists seeking holistic experiences that cater to their mind, body, and spirit. We discuss the opportunities in this space, government support, and challenges faced by the tourism industry in Vietnam.

In today’s fast-paced world, people are increasingly confronted with stress, environmental changes, and rising epidemics, prompting them to take a proactive approach to caring for their physical and mental well-being. Consequently, traveling has undergone a significant transformation, extending beyond simple exploration. Specifically, wellness tourism has emerged as a notable niche within the tourism industry. In Vietnam, this industry holds tremendous potential, offering opportunities for individuals seeking holistic experiences that cater to their mind, body, and spirit.

What is wellness tourism?

Unlike medical tourism , which focuses on specific treatments and procedures conducted by healthcare professionals, wellness tourism offers a diverse range of activities and experiences designed to promote overall well-being.

From serene meditation retreats to spa treatments, from invigorating yoga getaways to immersive wellness-focused resorts, this emerging industry integrates relaxation, stress reduction, and self-care practices. Wellness tourism provides an enticing avenue for individuals to prioritize their well-being while indulging in the pleasures of travel.

The untapped potential of wellness tourism in Vietnam

Natural and cultural resources.

With its breathtaking 3200 km coastline and sprawling forests, Vietnam boasts an extraordinary landscape that captivates the senses. But it’s not just the natural beauty that sets Vietnam apart. The country’s rich cultural heritage, steeped in traditions and customs that span thousands of years, adds an intriguing layer to its allure. With 8 UNESCO-recognized world heritage sites and countless other renowned landscapes, Vietnam is a treasure trove of exploration.

For its natural and cultural resources, Vietnam ranks 24th and 25th respectively worldwide according to the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Travel & Tourism Development Index 2021. These remarkable attributes make Vietnam an ideal destination for wellness tourism, offering a place where visitors can reconnect with nature and find solace.

Increasing demand

According to World Health Organization (WHO) data from 2019, a staggering 13 percent of the global population was affected by mental health disorders. Vietnam mirrored this trend, with Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan highlighting on World Mental Health Day 2022 that 14.9 percent of the country’s population is impacted by such disorders.

During and after the pandemic, this situation was further exacerbated as individuals faced the challenges of social distancing, isolation, and the need to adapt to a rapidly changing world. The toll of these circumstances highlights the growing need to achieve a balance between physical and mental well-being.

Price competitiveness

Vietnam’s position as a destination for wellness tourism is further enhanced by its remarkable price competitiveness. Renowned international luxury and lifestyle travel magazine, Condé Nast Traveler (CNT), recognized Vietnam as one of the top cheap places to visit in the world in 2023. Moreover, Vietnam’s exceptional price competitiveness is not limited to this recognition alone. In fact, the country holds an impressive standing in the Travel & Tourism Development Index, ranking 15th worldwide in terms of price competitiveness.

The allure of the price advantage acts as a magnetic force, drawing in both domestic and international tourists who seek affordable health-focused travel experiences without burdening their budget.

Growing wellness services

The growing demand for wellness tourism in Vietnam has spurred the expansion of services aimed at enhancing both physical and mental health.

Michelle Ford, the founder and CEO of Luminary Wellness, has recognized this trend.

“Many investors in the hospitality industry in Vietnam can see the potential of wellness tourism and they are investing in more products and services for this trend to adapt to the market,” she told The Investor .

This surge in investment has led to the establishment of state-of-the-art spa and wellness facilities in recent years.

An example of this is Six Senses Con Dao, which offers an array of spa treatments and meditation practices inspired by traditional Vietnamese methods, and carefully curated wellness programs to provide tourists with mental relaxation. Moreover, Vietnam’s abundant and diverse natural mineral water resources have opened the door to additional services, such as hot springs and bathing therapy, which are now being offered in resorts like Alba Wellness Valley by Fusion.

Challenges facing wellness tourism in Vietnam

Wellness economy size, rankings.

Source: Global Wellness Institute

In 2020, Vietnam was 33rd in terms of the size of its wellness economy, as reported by the Global Wellness Institute (GWI). While this indicates some progress in the country’s wellness industry, Vietnam’s presence remains relatively modest compared to its counterparts in Southeast Asia. This suggests potential weaknesses, including factors such as competition from other markets, regulations, and the quality of labor within the wellness sector and the tourism industry more broadly.

Competition from neighboring markets

Given the aforementioned landscape, it is evident that Vietnam faces substantial competition from neighboring countries in the region when it comes to developing its wellness tourism market. Notably, Thailand and Malaysia have emerged as prominent players in the wellness tourism sector, ranking 15th and 17th, respectively, in the list of the Top 20 Wellness Tourism destinations, published by GWI in 2021. These countries have successfully leveraged their abundant natural resources and cultural heritage to attract tourists seeking wellness-related activities and experiences.

Consequently, competition in the Southeast Asian market itself is already significant, necessitating the development and implementation of more effective strategies to attract visitors in line with Vietnam’s potential.

Labor quality

Despite the growing number of workers in Vietnam’s tourism industry, there remains a significant shortage of human resources, particularly in specialized fields. According to data from 2019 the General Department of Tourism , the Vietnam tourism industry requires nearly 40,000 additional workers annually, while the number of students and graduates with specialized training is only around 15,000 per year. This would have been significantly impacted by the drop in tourist numbers during COVID-19. As things stand, the majority of human capital in the tourism industry possess intermediate, or short-term training levels, indicating a scarcity of highly qualified labor. With Vietnam’s economy recovering, this skills shortage will limit growth prospects in the wellness sector.

That in turn would create the risk of unregulated establishments, methods, and practices being utilized by individuals with limited professional qualifications or without adequate verification of their efficacy. This situation raises concerns as it can significantly impact the overall visitor experience and shape the perception of Vietnam as a trustworthy wellness destination.

Opportunities for foreign investors

Despite the widespread effects of the pandemic, the global wellness tourism market still reached US$476.1 billion in 2022 and is expected to grow to US$1.02 trillion in 2030, according to Statista . These figures underscore the immense potential and future prospects of the industry.

As a result, while challenges persist, the wellness tourism sector still presents compelling opportunities. This is particularly evident in Vietnam, where the market is largely untapped.

Some potential destinations for wellness tourism

Phu quoc island.

Phu Quoc is a naturally stunning island endowed with breathtaking scenery and a diverse marine ecosystem. This is also home to Phu Quoc National Park, a UNESCO-recognized World Biosphere Reserve, which plays a crucial role in the preservation of rare and precious species.

Given its potential, the development of Phu Quoc as a special economic zone is a priority for Kien Giang province, and this has led to the implementation of various favorable policies.

According to Official Dispatch 4271/TCT-CS from the General Department of Taxation , investment projects on Phu Quoc Island enjoy a corporate income tax rate of 10 percent throughout the project’s duration. This, along with other advantageous terms, incentivizes both domestic and foreign investments.

Furthermore, Phu Quoc has also witnessed substantial investments in infrastructure upgrades, with billions of Vietnamese dong dedicated to these improvements. Notably, the An Thoi seaport has been enhanced to accommodate international trade, facilitating the passage of goods from 500,000 to 700,000 tons annually and serving around 360,000 passengers each year.

These factors bolster Phu Quoc’s potential as an investment destination and support its growth as a thriving hub for wellness tourism.

Lao Cai has natural landscapes, such as the majestic Fansipan mountain peak and an abundance of golden rice terraces.

Notably, in 2023, CNT Travel magazine selected Sapa town in the Hoàng Liên Son Mountains of Lao Cai province as among the 50 most beautiful small towns in the world. Beyond its natural beauty, Lao Cai is also home to approximately 25 ethnic minorities, contributing to its rich cultural tapestry.

Furthermore, Lao Cai is recognized as one of the eight key locations in Vietnam for the development of herbal medicine. With an impressive array of around 850 species of medicinal plants, including endangered species under conservation, the province holds significant potential for wellness tourism. Visitors can indulge in revitalizing herbal baths, experience health care practices rooted in traditional remedies, savor herbal cuisine, and engage in activities, such as yoga and meditation.

Ba Ria – Vung Tau

Ba Ria – Vung Tau province in Vietnam is a promising destination for wellness tourism, offering attractions such as the Binh Chau hot springs and the scenic Ho Tram beach.

Recognizing the untapped potential, foreign investors are active in the region. For example, there is an international collaboration between Vietnam’s Charm Group and Thailand’s Goco Hospitality Group. This project aims to create a line of upscale wellness retreats. Additionally, US franchise Best Western Hotels & Resorts, a renowned global hospitality company, will participate in managing and operating the beach apartments and villas within the project.

Ancillary services

The rising demand for wellness experiences has created additional opportunities in various ancillary sectors. These include organic and healthy food options, products catering to yoga or meditation practices, and technology products that enhance personalized wellness vacations for customers. Therefore, investing in these supporting sectors presents profitable opportunities for investors looking to capitalize on this trend.

Numerous resorts have embraced the integration of organic products in their offerings. One notable example is The Anam Cam Ranh , which operates an organic farm that supplies its restaurants with fresh ingredients. Similarly, Meliá Ho Tram has established Willow’s Garden, a sustainable garden spanning over 2,000 square meters, catering to tourists. In addition, the resort has also partnered with US cleaning and hygiene solutions company Diversey on the “Soap for Hope” project to reduce soap waste generated by hotels.

Despite the spillover effects of the pandemic, wellness tourism is becoming more popular. Vietnam is well poised to benefit, with its diverse natural landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and rising demand for holistic well-being experiences. In this respect, foreign wellness firms and businesses engaged in supporting sectors would do well to consider expanding into this emerging market. Key areas that require foreign capital and development of expertise include wellness facilities in identified locations, specialized training, and organic products to cater to wellness, healing, and lifestyle management.

As the book “Eat, Pray, Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert wrote “The resting place of the mind is the heart. Vietnam has vast potential to develop wellness tourism

Saturday, October 16, 2021 Favorite

wellness tourism vietnam

Wellness tourism is a trend of world tourism, especially in the context of the current Covid-19 pandemic, the impacts of environmental pollution. Vietnam preserves the rich natural resources suitable to develop wellness tourism attracting the tourists around the world.

On October 6, the Institute of Tourism Development Research (under the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism – VNAT) held an online workshop to discuss the potential, current status, identification of the problems and solutions to develop wellness tourism in Vietnam.

The workshop was presided by Vice Chairwoman of VNAT Nguyen Thi Thanh Huong, and attended by representatives of provincial departments of tourism management, local tourism associations, Oriental Traditional Medicine Association, Yoga Federation, travel experts and tourism businesses.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Huong said “The emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic and environmental pollution problems have made people pay more attention to the health care and type of wellness tourism. In the coming time, the trend of tourism will change markedly, especially with long-term trips of tourists, which will no longer be mere sightseeing trips but instead a form of leisure tourism with a combination of health care improvement”.

According to many tourism experts, currently, this type of tourism is developing rapidly everywhere from North America to Europe, Asia-Pacific and will grow faster in the coming years.

It must be affirmed that Vietnam has a lot of potentials to develop wellness tourism Vietnam owns rich and diverse natural mineral water resources, valuable for medical treatment, nursing and health care. The Geology sector has discovered about 400 hot mineral water sources across the country, of which 287 sources have been investigated, researched and analysed and classified into 11 different types, which have both therapeutic and medicinal effects, exploited into bottled drinking water for human life. With 11 types of discovered mineral water, Vietnam is the convergence of most of the major mineral water known in the world. Vietnam’s mineral water is exploited to treat many different diseases. These hot mineral waters have become places of rest and recuperation favoured by many tourists.

Vietnam has a coastline of 3,260 km with many beautiful beaches and favourable for resort tourism development. In addition, the sea has 2,773 large and small islands. The coastal islands have fine sand beaches, clear blue water, quiet and peaceful, which are very suitable for leisure and medical tourism.

Vietnam has an extremely rich and diverse system of medicinal plants with about 3,850 species of plants used as medicine. Currently, the Ministry of Health has granted registration numbers to more than 2,000 traditional medicine preparations produced by more than 450 traditional medicine and pharmacy establishments. Vietnam has a famous traditional medicine background with a large team of traditional medicine doctors, 5 research institutes with departments of traditional medicine and pharmacy, 46 provincial traditional medicine hospitals, 80% of large hospitals have a department or group of traditional medicine.

In addition, in Vietnam, besides a rich system of historical relics, there are many pagodas, viharas and monasteries with attractive landscapes that can be exploited to develop tourism in general and develop tourism types associated with Zen and Yoga in particular.

Currently, there are many hot mineral springs in Vietnam that are invested to attract tourists such as: My Lam hot spring tourist site (in Tuyen Quang) invested by Vinpearl Group, hot mineral spring resort of Quang Hanh (in Quang Ninh Province) invested by SunGroup, or Thanh Thuy (in PhuTho) exploited by YoKo group according to the Japanese Onsen model, etc. Some resorts provide mud bath, spa, sauna, and cooling services such as V-resort (in HoaBinh), Alba Thanh Tan (in Thua Thien hue), Hundred Eggs tourist area (in KhanhHoa), Saigon-Binh Chau hot mineral resort (in Ba Ria – VungTau)…

In addition, travel companies have started offering meditation-yoga tourism products. According to tour organizers, the places where nature is still untouched, quiet, and fresh air are suitable for visitors to practice yoga, meditate, and enjoy spa treatments to relieve stress. These tours provide trainers to guide visitors.

Wellness: one of Vietnam tourism’s keys in future

Vietnam is expected to focus on developing wellness and healthcare tourism in the coming time.

The conference “Development of wellness tourism in Vietnam” was organized by the Institute for Tourism Development Research on October 6, showing the important role of wellness tourism in the national travel industry.

A global trend

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Director of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism Nguyen Thi Thanh Huong said that tourism activities associated with wellness and healthcare are being given more and more attention in the world. In the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, climate change, environmental pollution, and diseases, people need to take care of their health and relieve stress.

"This makes the wellness and healthcare market grow, along with wellness tourism," Huong said.

Wellness tourism has become popular in other countries in the same region such as India, Japan, China, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, among others. It is expected that this trend will develop strongly in the coming time. The long trips of tourists will not only be for sightseeing, but also for healthcare, as specialists agreed at the conference.

“It is estimated that the world’s wellness tourism will reach $919 billion by 2022. Currently, this type of tourism is flourishing everywhere from Asia-Pacific to North America and Europe and will grow even faster in the coming years, as it is in the convergence of two large booming industries, tourism, and healthcare,” tourism expert Nguyen Van Luu told The Hanoi Times

Over the past five years, Asia has led both in the number of visitors and in revenue from wellness tourism. If it maintains the average growth rate of 7.5% per year, it will contribute 18% of the share to the world tourism industry.

“Therefore, the development of this kind of tourism will diversify tourism products for domestic and foreign tourists, lengthening their stay, as well as increasing their spending in Vietnam,” Huong said.

Vietnam has favorable climate and terrain conditions to develop wellness and health care systems and tourism. Besides areas with good weather all year round, Vietnam also has a coastline of over 3,000 km, with thousands of beautiful islands and sunny beaches, which are ideal to develop holiday and wellness tourism.

Moreover, the country also boasts rich and diverse mineral water resources, which have been used for medical treatment and health care such as hot springs and mud baths from the North to the South, in provinces and cities of Hoa Binh, Ninh Binh, Tuyen Quang, Quang Ninh, Thua Thien-Hue, Nha Trang, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, among others.

Besides, spa and wellness services with a complete process including health care education, exercise, eating ways, and treatment, which have recently been offered at beach resorts and luxury hotels in big cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Quang Ninh, Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An, Nha Trang, Phan Thiet, Phu Quoc, and so on, also contribute an important part to wellness tourism.

“Wellness is a golden opportunity for the hospitality industry. Feeling healthy is a universal, emotionally charged, and frequent concern for all demographics of guests and cuts across all areas of life, from daily routines to exceptional, transformative travel experiences. Our diverse hotel brands look forward to embracing the challenge of continuously surprising and delighting our guests with new ways to achieve health and well-being during their travels, inspiring them to choose our hotels again and again,” Global Vice-President of Accor’s Wellbeing, Luxury & Premium Brands told  The Hanoi Times .

In addition, more eco-tourism areas and wellness tours associated with exercise activities such as swimming, walking in nature, meditation, yoga, acupressure, herbal treatment, among others, are new tourism products attracting tourists.

Together with spa services, this model is developing in Hanoi and its surrounding areas, thanks to the national parks, countryside environment, and is one of the country’s largest traditional medicine treatment hubs, making it among the top 10 tourist destinations for wellness tourism services in Asia in 2015, by Wego and TrustYou.

More effort needed

The potential of wellness tourism has yet been tapped fully, according to most specialists. Currently, wellness services are still poor. There is also a shortage of training centers and human resources, especially management personnel and highly skilled technicians.

“This type of tourism is still new and has not been fully developed and the options for customers are still poor,” tourism professor and lecturer Nguyen Van Dinh told  The Hanoi Times .

He cited statistics from the Ministry of Health that say that 40,000 Vietnamese spend approximately $1 billion a year to go abroad for medical treatment and tourism. These figures show how little most domestic and foreign tourists know about services of medical and wellness tourism in the country, Dinh said.

Truong Sy Vinh, Deputy Director of the Institute for Tourism Development Research also emphasized the role of more efforts in researching and making policies on the development of wellness in Vietnam, after consulting with tourism specialists.

“We need to develop a variety of wellness tourism products, train an intensive workforce, and learn from the experiences of other countries with a developed wellness tourism for attractive products,” he said.

“Only with that, Vietnam is able to compete with other developed countries in wellness and healthcare tourism in the region,” he added.

In recent years, there has been an increasing number of wellness resort in Vietnam that will guarantee you a luxurious and relaxing retreat experience. Let’s explore what are the best 3 wellness resort in Vietnam that could be the next location for your detox retreat.

A wellness resort in Vietnam vs a normal resort in Vietnam: what’re the differences?

For some travelers to Vietnam who are new to the concept ‘wellness’, there are certain differences when comparing a wellness retreat and a typical holiday, as well as between a wellness resort and other regular resorts and spa.

A wellness retreat, by definition, is traveling for the purpose of improving one’s wellbeing and health while stepping back from the stresses and responsibilities of the day-to-day routine. One seeks a wellness retreat with a particular purpose and objective, whether it’s to reconnect with a healthier lifestyle, improve fitness and wellbeing or lose weight. Therefore, it is important that you choose where to achieve your wellness goals, providing that it offers the utmost comfort and relaxation, as well as the facilities and services to assist your wellness journey.

Luckily, these 3 best wellness resorts in Vietnam are perfectly capable.

1. Amanoi Vinh Hy Bay

Location: Ninh Thuan Province, Vietnam

Located on a mountainous promontory inside Nui Chua National Park, alongside the spectacular coastline of Ninh Van Bay, Amanoi is a ‘secluded retreat where adventure and serenity meet’, as they claim to be. The name ‘Amanoi’ derives from the Sanskrit word ‘aman’ for ‘peace’ and ‘oi’ as an intimate calling in the Vietnamese language.

Amanoi Vinh Hy Bay is the only 6-star resort in Vietnam and is considered the most exclusive and luxurious wellness resort in Vietnam at the moment. When staying at Amanoi, enjoy the comfort of being far away from civilization and daily life, among the world’s most biodiverse regions with a very rich variety of natural lives. However, despite the wellness resort’s remote setting, it is only a 75-minute drive away from Cam Ranh airport, which welcomes a wide range of domestic and international flights from around the world.

On top of that, Amanoi’s wellness center and services is truly a ‘retreat within retreat’, offering a journey of restoration and rejuvenation through customized wellness activities to fit individual health and wellbeing objectives of each guest. A combination of ancient healing methods with modern facilities and spa treatments, surrounded by the mountainous greeneries and a lotus-filled lake, a vacation at Amanoi wellness resort is your perfect retreat in Vietnam.

Wellness Travel – New inspiration from travelling

By: An Binh

A trip may not completely change a life, but stepping outside of the “default zone”, relaxing the senses and emotions, experiencing balanced therapies are a way for people to slow down, purify and refresh ourselves…

Wellness Travel Nguon Cam Hung Moi Tu Du Lich

Recently, the world tourism industry has changed rapidly year by year in terms of types, products and ways of choosing and enjoying in travelling.

According to the experts’ forecast, tourism combined with health care and beauty would become the “dominant” trend in the next few years. A statistic from the Global Wellness Institute shows that the revenue from wellness tourism would increase double compared to traditional tourism and is expected to reach more than 900 billion dollars by 2022, contributing 18% of the global tourism share.

“Wellness travel” is a form of relaxing travel combined with health care, helping visitors to find a physical and mental balance.

Specifically, when taking a wellness vacation, visitors will be able to immerse themselves in nature, enjoy health therapies such as meditation, yoga, messages, and have a different, healthy diet every day which could help detoxify and purify the body.

Slow Travelling

An interesting shift is taking place all over the world. From the need to travel quickly and conveniently by modern means, many tourists are choosing the rustic, pure and relaxed journeys for the whole trip, such as cycling around the continents.

They “cancel” with a lot of plans, pause all concerns, go to farms, stay and work there. In the morning, they wake up to practice yoga, meditation, jog, and cook with the natives. Funding for these experience tours is higher than normal tours, but more and more people want to participate, especially those who are working, or at middle age. That is why the tourism revenue in the last two years has grown quickly.

Participating in the Pure Mind Yoga course at Aleenta Phuket Phang Nga, Phuket (Thailand), visitors will be taken to the romantic beach of Natai and the spiritual yoga founder Thielenmann will encourage students to recharge and deal challenges in life with 4 methods: anti-aging, detoxification, optimal weight and mental balance; The “Vana Malaysia Estate” treatment course in Uttarakhand, India combines human body and spiritual elements, where visitors are trained to nurture a pure soul, focus internal strength, taking care  and protecting health comprehensively.

All stress and life pressure are relieved; The combination of picnic and healing activities in the Eastern – Western Medicine method, which discover the profound meaning of life from lectures of the locals, is a special attraction of the course “Sunrise Springs Integrative Wellness”, New Mexico…

Being far away from home, immersed in the new natural and cultural surroundings, feeling everything around slowly, relaxed, wellness tourism was born to satisfy those expectations of tourists.

Travelling to keep the youth

The underwater meditation course in Amanbagh, Rajasthan, India usually takes place from the beginning to the middle of the year, with each course lasts 21 days.

This is a high-class wellness tourism program using an anti-aging treatment inherited from the Ayurveda beauty method of India from 5000 years ago. Each tour will be instructed by a personal health care professional to follow the treatment, including body detox, purification and proper diet, yoga, and meditation at a temple located deep in a canyon built in 17th-century.

This course costs more than $6,000, is classified as a luxury tourism, but many women choose this to improve their body from deep inside, become healthier and gain better physical endurance with rejuvenated skin. Tours designed specifically for women have increased sharply in the past year compared to other tours, and are expected to become a new inspiration for tourism in the next 3-5 years.

This trend is very popular in Japan and Singapore, which countries have an aging population and strong economic.

Wellness Travel Nguon Cam Hung Moi Tu Du Lich 06

Specially, the women who have devoted themselves to working hard, or caring about their families, have the need to improve their health, enjoy their joys, happiness, and recapture their youth.

Weight-loss tourism is also being considered a unique type of travel, suitable for destinations that have mountains and sea. Not only do they follow a diet in a resort, tourists participating in tours will also be coached by experts on exercises such as jogging on the beach, swimming, climbing, etc.

Nowadays, there are tours for middle-aged guests designed with very attractive contents, because this group of customers has high affordability and strong needs to be experienced and enjoyed. Wellness, beauty, happiness is all that they would seek in every trip. Therefore, the development of services focused on the elderly and women market is gradually becoming a potential trend to be exploited and expanded.

Inspirational travelling

In Japan, some companies and corporations try to create a forest campus within the building so that employees can take advantage of the feeling of being in the forest, immersed in nature. This kind of relaxation is very “hot” in Tokyo.

Wellness Travel Nguon Cam Hung Moi Tu Du Lich 02

Besides, many company leaders design some programs so that employees can work anywhere, work while traveling, visiting, entertaining and experiencing. Because they believe that is the way to make employees constantly creative and bring new and breakthrough results at work.

Preventive health is also a factor many companies are currently concerned about. Instead of requiring employees to come to the office, leaving them to work outside is a very “humane” and wise solution.

Wellness Travel Nguon Cam Hung Moi Tu Du Lich 010

Working combined with tourism (also known as online work travel) is the “trend” of the top 100 largest companies in the world. This trend is having a strong impact on the expansion of services for accommodation businesses, including the creation of ideal working space for tourists, as well as participation in works to regenerate energy, inspire new ideas.

This also led to the development of tourism associated with science, education, academia and volunteering. Some countries have incorporated this tourism trend into long-term national action plans such as Thailand, Indonesia, South Africa, Nepal, etc.

Opportunities for Da Nang

If in 2013, wellness tourism has been seen in 63 countries, then 5 years later, it has been found in more than 100 countries. In Asia alone, there has been over 270 million wellness trips. Vietnam with diverse natural and ecological systems has the potential to develop this new trend strongly.

Wellness Travel Nguon Cam Hung Moi Tu Du Lich 08

Among them, Hoi An, the neighboring city of Da Nang is highly evaluated for its factors that suit the “Wellness” tourism, ranking among the top 10 best cities in the world in the tourism field in Asia. Most recently, Postmedia – the largest newspaper network in Canada has just made a comment, Da Nang and Nha Trang are two prominent wellness destinations in Vietnam. The Central Coast of Vietnam is ready to become the next major wellness destination in Asia.

Evaluating the travelling combined with health care services, experts said that Da Nang nature has full potential to develop this type of tourism. The tourism industry combined with health care in Da Nang is developing rapidly, with the new projects of many resorts, combining spa, yoga, meditation, jogging … However, it can be seen that this type has not been professionally developed. Most of the wellness tourism products in recent years have been mainly provided by resort units.

Wellness Travel Nguon Cam Hung Moi Tu Du Lich 03

A number of specialized tours have just been developed, there is no connection between destinations to bring a truly unforgettable experience for visitors. There is also a lack of agencies taking responsibility for appraising the quality of these tours.

Therefore, in order to continue to attract more tourists, there must be a serious investment, strongly focused on the visitors’ experience, enhancing high quality services. In addition, wellness tourism also requires a more professional team, so in order to ensure the provision of good quality of service, it is necessary to focus on developing human resources having appropriate knowledge and skills.

The new potential of wellness tourism

Vietnam can be a strong competitor with other regional rivals in offering wellness tours as the country has so much to offer..

A group of more than 10 tourists lined up in a row and walked slowly and quietly so that they could hear their own breathing. The surroundings, unaffected by other human presence, continued as it always does – with the wind blowing in the foliage, the birds singing, and the sound of a stream burbling through the woods.

Occasionally, the group leader strikes the singing bowl she holds in her palm, creating a pleasant tone believed to calm brain waves. Walking in the Cát Bà National Park forest includes mindfulness practices among the activities of a wellness-focused trip organised by Lumina Retreats. This tour operator designs specialised programmes for people who seek adventure in the vast wellness terrain.

Wellness tourism has been defined by the Global Wellness Institute as travel associated with the pursuit of maintaining or enhancing one’s personal wellbeing .

Although the concept of wellness tourism has gradually become popular in recent years in Việt Nam, this model has shown strong development lately, especially after the COVID pandemic.

Phùng Quang Thắng, vice president of the Việt Nam Society of Travel Agents, said: “It’s been a stressful year for all people when their businesses have crashed, many others have lost loved ones, while others have lost jobs, and they also had to deal with the financial distress that comes with it."

"COVID-19 has upended every aspect of life and has aggravated the stress and anxiety of everyone. Now, as the pandemic subsides, many people desire to release all those negative feelings through the wellness trips to renew their mental, spiritual, and physical wellbeing.”

Michelle Ford, CEO and founder of Luminary Wellness – a consulting and management agency for spas, resorts & retreats, has anticipated that during the post-COVID period, there would be a strong need for adventure as people were isolated and at home during this period, and the awareness of health and wellness was at the forefront of everyone’s minds. That’s why they launched their own in-house brand Lumina Retreats in early 2021.

“With the new wellness realisations, we could reflect on the types of travel we select for our special vacations and nature connection to bring more meaning to our lives. Travel was limited to the domestic environment, and we wanted the Vietnamese market and residents in Việt Nam travelling to a known destination to feel that sense of adventure and newness again,” Ford said.

In July, Lumina Retreats, in partnership with Bhaya Cruises, debuted their wellness cruise in Hạ Long Bay. The three-day-two-night journey features a wellness-focused agenda featuring daily sunrise yoga classes, nighttime candlelit yin yoga practice under the stars, a healing breathwork workshop to support deep relaxation, and nature excursions to islands that include mindfulness practices, and other relaxing activities such as cycling, kayaking or swimming.

Joining the tour together with two friends, Bùi Thị Hồng Liên, who used to work in the software industry, said that she never had time for herself and her personal hobbies until she retired five years ago.

“Yoga is something I’ve wanted to try but never practised seriously before. After hundreds of journeys for both leisure and business, I think a tour must combine two factors – travel which can improve health, and yoga, which is a powerful mindfulness practice. For me, happiness is when a person is healthy physically and mentally. And this cruise meets my expectation,” she said.

Liên also revealed that she met her two friends during her previous trips and became friends as they discovered they have many things in common. Since then, they have often travelled together.

The retreat tour has proved that after isolation, meeting and travelling with a like-minded community and connecting with new friends bring extra value and fun.

For Hồng Anh, a woman from HCM City, the impressive experience she had when participating in a Lumina Retreats cruise trip in the Mekong River led her to joining the Hạ Long Bay retreat.

“Alongside extraordinary experiences, I’ve also got new connections and new friendships during my first retreats. I’ve just quit a very stressful job and will get a new job soon, so I hope this trip can be a refreshment for me to start my new job,” she said.

Joining the wellness cruise together with her mother, Đinh Thị Ngọc Tân, a young businesswoman from HCM City, said the daughter-and-mother trip is very special for them.

“Although I’ve travelled quite a lot, this is the first time I have my mother join me. It took 30 years to have a trip with my mother,” she said.

She saw her mother enjoy the tour and not skip any activities.

Challenge of being pioneers

Although wellness tourism is popular in many countries worldwide, it is still quite new in Việt Nam. However, pioneers like Lumina Retreats see the creative possibilities instead of only the challenges.

Lumina Retreats creator Ford said that the critical challenges in the wellness industry relate to understanding that wellness is a lifestyle, not a product.

“That means that all areas of the retreat need to be in harmony – from food to service, to experience, and the travellers expect their wellness lifestyle to be understood in all areas of their stay,” she said.

The CEO also said that the other area is training and development.

“Việt Nam is emerging as a wellness destination, and when taking on a wellness project or pioneering a new wellness concept, it is essential to commit to investing in developing our country’s future talent pool of wellness managers, specialised practitioners, coaches, yoga teachers, and therapists, and not only tap into the existing and limited human resources,” she added.

At Alba Wellness Valley by Fusion – a wellness resort located at the source of the Alba hot spring in Huế City, looking for new ideas and practices is how they keep their services fresh.

“We never say ‘no’. Instead, we rather say “why not” and try new things. If we want to be unique and offer the best services, we must think outside the box. We also need to listen and see how and what we can do to make our guests happy because happiness is a very important part of wellness,” the resort’s General Manager, Hylton Lipkin, said.

The resort offers an exceptional health and wellbeing experience through professional products such as the Mandala Wellness Retreat, Hot Spring Detox, and Healing Yourself Retreat.

Development

The Global Wellness Institute projects that wellness tourism will grow rapidly in the coming years as the world emerges from the pandemic (20.9 per cent annual growth), with the market reaching US$1.1 trillion in 2025. The institute also predicts Asia and the Pacific as the largest regional market for physical wellness activity, at $247 billion in 2020.

In Việt Nam, a recent market survey conducted by Luminary Wellness highlights that 85 per cent of the Vietnamese market has never experienced a wellness retreat before.

“So we feel the upcoming growth potential for retreats and wellness services is an unparalleled investment opportunity in Việt Nam,” said Ford.

The retreats are only the beginning of her team’s wellness vision in Việt Nam.

“On the retreat side, we intend to focus on a few high-quality, personalised and unique experiences that have a meaningful impact on your life, as opposed to an aggressive development plan. We hope that our retreat tribe follows us next to other destinations in Southeast Asia, and who knows, perhaps even an African Wellness Safari in the future,” she said.

In addition to Wellness Cruise retreats in Hạ Long Bay and the Mekong, Lumina Retreats is currently developing their next retreat adventure in the Sơn Đoòng caves and Phong Nha area in Quảng Bình. The tour is expected to launch at the beginning of next year.

According to Lipkin, who is also Ambassador for Vietnam of World Wellness Weekend – a global event inspiring and empowering people to make healthier life choices, Việt Nam can be a strong competitor with other regional rivals in offering wellness tours as the country has so much to offer.

“Việt Nam is known for beautiful outdoor landscapes, natural beauty and heritage, so it is a no-brainer to add a few more wellness-orientated options to the menu and activities list. This S-shaped country has always been a popular destination, so there is no reason this should not help boost wellness tourism,” he said.

Three Vietnam locales among world's 'best walking cities'

The capital city of Hanoi ranked 42nd while the old historic port town of Hoi An came in 87th, and HCMC 99th.

The list was based on booking and search data for 800 cities across 120 countries via the GuruWalk website between April 2023 and April 2024.

To compile the list, the company, which specializes in offering free walking tours worldwide, compared the number of bookings and page visits per destination.

Hanoi is well known for its rich history, French colonial architecture, and vibrant markets, all of which are easily experienced by walking. On foot, visitors can explore Thang Long Imperial Citadel, Temple of Literature, Ngoc Son Temple or stroll along the French-built Long Bien bridge.

According to GuruWalk, though many tourists choose to explore the capital by motorcycle, the best way to get a deep insight the city's history and culture is on foot.

"While Hoi An is famous for its old town illuminated by colorful lanterns, unique architecture, and custom tailoring, HCMC offers a mix of French colonial architecture, modern skyscrapers, and historical sites like the War Remnants Museum that are well worth exploring on foot," the site added.

Despite the ranking, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam's two largest metropolises, have often received complaints from both locals and tourists about the lack of space for walking, given the encroachment of sidewalk by vehicles and vendors.

According to GuruWalk, Rome is the world’s best walking city, followed by Budapest and Barcelona.
