All You Need To Know About The New DP World Tour

mm

Goodbye European Tour. Hello DP World Tour.

Well, kind of. The European Tour Group, the same people who’ve always run the European Tour and the European Team for the Ryder Cup, will remain. The big change is that DP World are now the Official Title Sponsor.

But what does this actually mean?

View this post on Instagram                         A post shared by DP World Tour (@dpworldtour)

The European Tour

Fundamentally, not much is changing. The Tour is not evolving from a European Tour to a World Tour. In fact, it’s been a World Tour for quite a while and arguably this rebrand is long overdue.

Set up in 1961, the European Tour has been jetting off further afield since 1982’s Tunisian Open in North Africa. Since then, the Tour has visited Australia, Argentina, Bahrain, Barbados, Brazil, China, Chinese Taipei, Fiji, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, New Zealand, Oman, the Philippines, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, the UAE, and of course, the US.

In fact, of 47 events held in 2011, 21 events (45%) were held outside of Europe, and this excludes the majors and World Golf Championship events which are mostly US based.

One of the big changes is the money up for grabs.

Record Prize Money

This new deal is a great deal for players with overall prize funds in 2022 set to top $140 million for all tournaments excluding the majors and WGCs, outstripping the previous high of $130 million in 2019. Including Majors and WGCs, that figure tops $200 million.

A new $2 million minimum prize fund will also apply to each tournament.

There will also be a record prize fund of $10 million at the season ending 2022 DP World Tour Championship — the first European Tour event to feature an eight figure prize pool.

New Title Sponsor

Dubai Port World, or DP World for short, is a Dubai based logistics company who are the leading provider of global smart end-to-end supply chain and logistics solutions — perfect for helping a golf tour traverse the globe.

This is not a new partnership. DP World have partnered with the European Tour since the 2009 Race to Dubai, which went on to become a Rolex Series event and was renamed the DP World Tour Championship in 2012. DP World then became an Official Partner of the European Tour in 2015, and now Official Title Partner from 2022.

So, there you have it.

You’re now up to date and well versed on the DP World Tour for the next time an event, almost inevitably, ships into a town near you.

Myrtle Beach Golf Trips

Five Things You Need to Know About World Tour Golf Links

World Tour Golf Links, which features replicas of golf’s most famous holes, is one of Myrtle Beach’s most popular facilities.

Sure, everyone knows the course replicates Amen Corner and the 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass, but World Tour is much more than a novelty. To get the inside scoop on a layout that has stood the test of time, we went to general manager Brad Crumling.

Heading into the 2020 golf season, here is what you need to know about World Tour Golf Links , according to Crumling:

— The course is in spectacular condition (see accompanying photos/videos as all images were taken in mid-February). The decision to overseed wall-to-wall has been a rousing success as the fairways, rough, greens and tee boxes all feature lush, green grass. There isn’t a better conditioned course along the Grand Strand heading into the spring.

— Many golfers arrive at World Tour thinking it’s a layout they have to play once. They leave looking forward to playing it again. The perception of World Tour is of 18 individual holes, but the layout blends together seamlessly. It’s an outstanding golf course, and who doesn’t like to imagine themselves playing the game’s historic venues?

— Amen Corner is great, but the hole most people remember is the replica of the famed island green 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass. Golfers love to talk about how many shots it took them hit the green. If you don’t believe Crumling, enjoy a drink at the clubhouse bar and listen to what your fellow players are saying.

— Not surprisingly given the make-up of the layout, World Tour is a second shot course. The layout isn’t overly penal but much of the trouble, in the form of water and bunkers, comes around the greens. Make sure your irons are tuned up and have a good time.

— World Tour is largely composed of holes everyone is familiar with, but English Turn Golf & Country Club, located in New Orleans, isn’t as widely known. The hole at World Tour inspired by the par 5 15th at English Turn has water running up the entire right of the hole, and it features an island green (yes, on a par 5!). It’s beautiful, challenging, and Crumling loves it.

Jon Rahm and other LIV golfers can play for Europe in the 2025 Ryder Cup … with conditions

1707645380

Tyrrell Hatton and Jon Rahm worried they might not be able to play for Europe in the 2025 Ryder Cup after joining LIV Golf, but since they've also kept their DP World Tour membership, there is a path forward for them.

Maddie Meyer/PGA of America

LONDON — Blame Rory McIlroy. In the immediate aftermath of two-time major champion Jon Rahm’s decision to join the LIV Golf League, the Northern Irishman wasted no time in expressing his fear that the Spaniard would therefore miss out on a fourth Ryder Cup start for Europe in 2025.

“The European Tour is going to have to rewrite the rules for Ryder Cup eligibility," McIlroy lamented in December. "There's absolutely no question about that.”

Well, it turns out the Old World circuit doesn’t have to do anything of the sort. As things stand, the regulations for Ryder Cup eligibility provide a possible pathway into the team that competes on the road at Bethpage Black for Rahm and any other European player currently plying his trade on the LIV Golf League.

“If we look at the eligibility criteria for 2023, I think there has been a slight misconception,” said Guy Kinnings, the newly minted DP World Tour chief executive, when sitting down for an interview on Thursday. “The reality is that, under the current system, if a player is European and is a member of the DP World Tour and abides by the rules in place, he is eligible.”

A closer look at those directives shows that, every time a DP World Tour member like Rahm or Englishman Tyrrell Hatton plays in a LIV event without obtaining a release from Kinnings, he is subject to sanctions. While each breach is taken on “a case-by-case basis,” that typically means a suspension from the DP World Tour and an undisclosed financial penalty.

“If you don’t get a release there are sanctions, so a player must accept those sanctions,” Kinnings said. “And if he accepts the penalties, there is no reason why a player who has taken LIV membership and maintained his DP World Tour membership could not a) qualify or b) be available for Ryder Cup selection.

“It requires a player to work within the rules, but the truth is that those rules have been looked and tested. Everything is done in a fair, reasonable and proportionate way. So there is no reason why anything needs to change. It is wrong to think Jon Rahm has written himself out of the Ryder Cup. People instantly thought we would have to change the rules. But actually we don’t. If Jon follows the procedures in place, there is no reason why he would not be eligible for the 2025 Ryder Cup.”

what is world tour golf

And, as it turns out, Rahm is carefully following those rules. As Kinnings confirmed, the two-time major champion has asked for a release every time he plays in a LIV event, including this week in order to tee-up in Adelaide, Australia. Those requests have all been refused, making Rahm liable for the aforementioned sanctions.

“Jon will likely have to serve a suspension,” Kinnings explained. “And if he does that, he will be eligible to play in the next Ryder Cup. He doesn’t actually have to enter a subsequent DP World Tour event to serve that suspension. He would be suspended from an event, even if he hasn’t entered. To be eligible for the Ryder Cup, a player must play in a minimum of four DP World Tour events. Any player will still be able to do that, even if he serves any and all suspensions levied. There are enough weeks in the year to do that. That’s not a loophole. Those are the rules we have always had.”

Kinnings went on to defend that situation—what many will see as something of a convenient loophole, despite Kinnings insistent to the contrary—citing the legally binding ruling of Sports Resolutions . (Ian Poulter and two other players had appealed when they were denied a release to play in the first LIV Golf event in London in July 2022. More players subsequently had joined the appeal). In April 2023 the arbitration group ruled in favor of the DP World Tour, upholding the tour’s conflicting tournament release regulation and its ability to sanction members who breached it.

“Our members have had to pay for legal fees,” Kinnings said. “And our process has been vindicated. So we are not going to change anything. This is not new news. Not all of the European LIV players resigned from the DP World Tour. (European captain) Luke Donald analyzed every player who was eligible for the last Ryder Cup. And had certain players performed well enough—as Brooks Koepka did for the Americans—then they could have been in the Ryder Cup team [in Rome]. As it is, they didn’t. Bottom line? We are not about to change rules we went to court to defend. They are what they are. The level of fines has not changed. Rules are rules. So we were not tempted to change when Jon went to LIV.”

So it is that Rahm and Hatton still can play their way on Donald’s 2025 team since they retain their DP World Tour membership (Sergio Garcia resigned his membership and while has talked about trying to regain it, does not appear to have taken the steps to do so in time to be eligible for 2025.) All of which will surely come as a huge relief to McIlroy and anyone else concerned about the level of competitiveness we are likely to see at Bethpage Black on Long Island when the Ryder Cup reconvenes in September next year.

LIV Golf’s Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton shockingly granted Ryder Cup lifeline

Despite their affiliation with LIV Golf, both Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton can make the Ryder Cup team in 2025.

Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, 2023 Ryder Cup

Get ready to see Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton at Bethpage Black for the 2025 Ryder Cup , despite their affiliation with LIV Golf .

Many believed that LIV golfers could not compete in the last Ryder Cup, held at Marco Simone Golf Club outside of Rome, Italy. No European LIV players, such as Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood, Henrik Stenson, and Ian Poulter, made the roster in Rome, leading many to think that Team Europe barred LIV golfers from its team.

When in fact, those players rescinded their DP World Tour memberships and, thus, their Ryder Cup prospects.

That ultimately led to Garcia attempting to pay off his fines of $867,000 , but it was too little, too late.

As for the case of Rahm and Hatton competing in 2025, newly minted DP World Tour CEO Guy Kinnings cleared up this “misconception” in an interview with Golf Digest and other outlets.

“If we look at the eligibility criteria for 2023, I think there has been a slight misconception,” Kinnings said.

Ryder Cup

“The reality is that, under the current system, if a player is European and is a member of the DP World Tour and abides by the rules in place, he is eligible.”

Both Rahm and Hatton fit this billing, considering that both players have maintained their DP World Tour membership and hail from Spain and England, respectively.

Yet, these two players have not obtained an official release from the DP World Tour that would allow them to compete in LIV Golf events. As such, both players are liable to sanctions from the DP World Tour, if they want to compete in the next Ryder Cup. That will likely include a financial penalty, which should not trouble Rahm and Hatton too greatly, considering the millions they received.

“If you don’t get a release, there are sanctions, so a player must accept those sanctions. And if he accepts the penalties, there is no reason why a player who has taken LIV membership and maintained his DP World Tour membership could not (a) qualify or (b) be available for Ryder Cup selection,” Kinnings explained.

“It requires a player to work within the rules, but the truth is that those rules have been looked at and tested. Everything is done in a fair, reasonable, and proportionate way. So, there is no reason why anything needs to change. It is wrong to think Jon Rahm has written himself out of the Ryder Cup. People instantly thought we would have to change the rules . But actually, we don’t. If Jon follows the procedures in place, there is no reason why he would not be eligible for the 2025 Ryder Cup.”

To date, Rahm has followed these procedures, according to Kinnings. He has formally requested a release before each LIV event he has played, including this week before LIV Golf’s Adelaide event, but the DP World Tour has denied each plea.

“[Rahm] will likely have to serve a suspension. And if he does that, he will be eligible to play in the next Ryder Cup. He doesn’t actually have to enter a subsequent DP World Tour event to serve that suspension. He would be suspended from an event, even if he hasn’t entered,” Kinnings added.

Jon Rahm, Ryder Cup

“To be eligible for the Ryder Cup, a player must play in a minimum of four DP World Tour events. Any player will still be able to do that, even if he serves any and all suspensions levied. There are enough weeks in the year to do that. That’s not a loophole. Those are the rules we have always had.”

Instead of serving his suspension after the LIV Golf season wraps up, Rahm, in theory, could partake in his suspension during off weeks on the Saudi-backed circuit. Since LIV Golf has a two-week break between the PGA Championship in mid-May and its Houston event in early June, part of Rahm’s suspension could be honored through the Soudal Open in Belgium and the European Open in Germany, for example.

Rahm could continue to employ this strategy throughout the Summer, opening up the door for him to compete in two of his favorite events on the DP World Tour later this Fall: the Andalucía Masters and the Open de España.

Regardless, the path for Rahm and Hatton—along with Adrian Meronk and Thomas Pieters—to make the 2025 Ryder Cup team has been laid out before them. Whether these players follow that course remains to be seen.

But rest assured that all European fans, including fellow players like Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood, want Rahm and Hatton on the team at Bethpage Black.

PGA Tour, DP World Tour and Saudi Public Investment Fund Have Yet to Meet Together

According to a report, the new CEO of the DP World Tour wants an agreement to move quickly, and he also believes European LIV golfers should be able to play in the Ryder Cup.

  • Author: Bob Harig

Nearly a year after the shocking “framework agreement’’ was announced between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, all of the parties have yet to formally meet together.

That is according to Guy Kinnings, the new CEO of the DP World Tour, who officially took over from Keith Pelley this month.

Kinnings, in a media session with a small group UK and Irish golf writers in London, discussed his hopes for an agreement and also made clear that the European Ryder Cup rules do not need to be changed for players such as Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton to be part of the team next year at Bethpage Black.

“From my perspective, all I want to do is make sure we as quickly as possible get the right people around a table to talk about what can a future look like,’’ Kinnnings said in a report from the Scotsman newspaper . “I don’t expect them to go in knowing all the answers. There’s lots of things have to get worked at. What does the product look like, probably from 2026 and beyond? What’s the pathway? What does it mean for things?

“But, until you get into the room with the right people with the right intent to try and find a solution, you are never going to work out a deal and, at the end of the day, this is what is needed right now as quickly as we can. We’ve all seen—even with a great Masters—that TV figures are down. If we listen to the fans, there’s something that needs to get fixed and I see it as a huge opportunity because, if you can unite and go global, that’s exactly what we are all about.’’

The framework agreement was supposed to bring the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and PIF—which backs LIV Golf—together by the end of 2023. That deadline was missed, and since then the PGA Tour has received private equity from a U.S. based consortium of investors called Strategic Sports Group that can be as much as $3 billion.

A plan has been unveiled for PGA Tour players to receive equity in the new PGA Tour Enterprises, a for-profit company. Kinnings said that the PIF’s governor, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, wants to be part of the group of investors.

“I was talking to the guys from the Strategic Sports Group  and I said ‘listen, we’ve got to get together, we’ve got to pull it all together, we’ve got to find the product that works—it probably won’t be until 2026 but beyond there—and is good for the game, something that fans like and works for everyone.’ But, at the end of the day, it has got to be something that is appealing to them. It’s got to work for all parties and everyone is going to have to do things they don’t necessarily want to, a compromise. But that’s what you do if you strike a deal, it won’t happen until we get everyone in a room together.”

Kinnings also said that players, such as Rahm, who remain a DP World Tour member but pay fines and deal with suspensions for missing conflicting events can still be eligible for the Ryder Cup.

PGA Tour Players React to Nelly Korda’s Success

what is world tour golf

Nelly Korda’s five consecutive LPGA Tour victories have taken the golf world by storm in recent weeks, even catching the eye of some of her male counterparts on the PGA Tour. Take a look at what they had to say about the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings No. 1’s success over the past few months.

Scottie Scheffler

“One of the people here asked me, is this turning into a competition between you and Nelly, and I was like, I don't know, man. I think if it's a competition, she's got me pretty beat right now. Five wins in a row. She had that T16 at the beginning of the year, which was just terrible. I can't believe she did that. It's pretty special stuff. To win four times in a row and then show up at a major championship and win is extremely impressive. I'm extremely happy for her. I think we've all seen the golf swing. I wish I could see it more in person, but we don't really run into them too much outside of some TaylorMade shoots and stuff like that. Some great golf, some historic stuff, and hopefully she keeps it up.”

“She finished T16 in her first event this year and the other five she's won. I don't know if I can quite relate to that. That's some pretty serious golf. I'm extremely happy for her and proud of her. That's some pretty special stuff. It's been a treat to watch.”

Billy Horschel

“I had a three-week stretch where I finished second, first, first, and I thought I was something special at that time, but what Nelly and Scottie are doing is unreal. I can't imagine that. And over a period of time, not just five weeks in a row, they've done over six, seven, eight weeks. It's unreal golf. To think about who they're playing against in today's generation of more talented players and doing what they're still doing, I'd say we're not going to see anything like that again, but I'm sure we will. You have to stand up and applaud them because it's pretty special. As a golf fan, I'm just lucky to be able to see that because, at the end of the day, I'm a golf fan at heart.”

J.T. Poston

“I don't know her personally, but five in a row is pretty impressive, and that was a major (Sunday), right; is that correct? That's pretty impressive. Obviously, what Scottie has been doing has been pretty impressive, and for her to reel off five in a row, that's hard to fathom.”

Wyndham Clark

“To win five in a row is amazing. Especially one being a major that she just won. Kudos to her. She's playing amazing and clearly the best female in the world.”

Cameron Smith plays a shot on day one of LIV Adelaide

Golf Australia signs deal with LIV in first partnership with Saudi-backed tour

  • Cameron Smith’s Ripper GC and LIV to help fund junior program
  • PGA of Australia still aligned with DP World Tour

LIV Golf has struck a deal to help fund Golf Australia’s junior program, in the first formal relationship between the steward of the game in Australia and the Saudi Arabia-backed entity.

The arrangement – which involves LIV and its Ripper GC franchise of Australian players led by Cameron Smith – has been in negotiations for weeks.

A formal announcement is expected in the coming days to coincide with the LIV tournament in Adelaide, according to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald .

The deal sees LIV and Ripper GC make it cheaper for some children to access My Golf, the junior program run by GA.

GA also has staff working on a My Golf activation in Adelaide this week alongside the LIV tournament promotions.

In 2022-23, 33,000 children participated in My Golf, according to GA’s annual report, a figure that grew 22% on the previous year.

The cost of My Golf varies depending on the location and type of program. A single after school session can cost less than $50, but a regular hit over a school term is priced in the hundreds of dollars.

GA’s decision to accept the subsidies from LIV is the first major step by Australia’s golf establishment towards the upstart tour.

The PGA of Australia (PGAA), the body representing tournament and club professionals and organiser of the Australasian Tour, is still aligned with LIV rival the DP World Tour.

As manager of the game in Australia GA’s remit is on building participation and the body receives funding from the federal government.

However, GA and the PGAA have largely combined operations, adding a layer of complexity to the deal.

GA’s chief executive, James Sutherland, said last month Australia looked at LIV differently from other parts of the world.

after newsletter promotion

“There’s clearly an ‘anti’ or a conservative sentiment about the Saudis in the US, and the further east you go on a world map from America, the more moderate the views are,” he said.

LIV commissioner Greg Norman said on Wednesday he was “very proud” of investments his organisation was making into golf generally.

“If it wasn’t for LIV, these additional investment dollars going into the sport would never have happened,” he said.

In excess of 80,000 people are expected to attend the LIV Adelaide tournament this weekend.

Norman has described the Adelaide event as the “benchmark” for LIV worldwide. LIV golf is funded by Saudi Arabia’s public investment fund.

Players who stayed loyal to the PGA Tour amid lucrative recruitment by Saudi-funded LIV Golf are starting to find out how much that loyalty could be worth.

The PGA Tour on Wednesday began contacting the 193 players eligible for the $930 million from a “Player Equity Program” under the new PGA Tour Enterprises .

The bulk of that money — $750 million — went to 36 players based on their career performance, the last five years and how they fared in a recent program that measured their star power.

How much they received was not immediately known. Emails were going out Wednesday afternoon and Thursday informing players of what they would get. One person who saw a list of how the equity shares were doled out said the names had been redacted. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because many details of the program were not made public.

The Telegraph reported Tiger Woods was to receive $100 million in equity and Rory McIlroy could get $50 million, without saying how it came up with those numbers.

Commissioner Jay Monahan outlined the first-of-its-kind equity ownership program in a Feb. 7 memo to players, a week after Strategic Sports Group became a minority investor in the new commercial PGA Tour Enterprises.

The private equity group, a consortium of professional sports owners led by the Fenway Sports Group, made an initial investment of $1.5 billion that could be worth $3 billion. The tour is still negotiating with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia — the financial muscle behind the rival LIV Golf league — as an investor.

Any deal with PIF would most certainly increase the value of the equity shares.

Another person with knowledge of the Player Equity Program, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the dealings, said the equity money is not part of the SSG investment. That money was geared toward growth capital.

Golf.com received a series of informational videos on the Player Equity Program that was sent to players and reported only 50% of the equity would vest after four years, 25% more after six years and the rest of it after eight years.

It also reported how the 36 players from the top tier were judged on “career points,” such as how long they were full members, victories, how often they reached the Tour Championship and extra points for significant victories.

Jason Gore, the tour’s chief player officer, said in one of the videos, “It’s really about making sure that our players know the PGA Tour is the best place to compete and showing them how much the Tour appreciates them being loyal.”

Emails also were sent to 64 players who would share $75 million in aggregate equity based on the past three years, and $30 million to 57 players who are PGA Tour members. Also, $75 million in equity shares was set aside for 36 past players instrumental in building the tour.

The program has an additional $600 million in equity grants that are recurring for future PGA Tour players. Those would be awarded in amounts of $100 million annually started in 2025.

Players only get equity shares from one of the four tiers now, although everyone would be eligible for the recurring grants.

Even with equity ownership geared toward making the PGA Tour better, the concern was players questioning who got how much and whether they received their fair share.

LIV Golf lured away seven major champions dating to 2018 since it launched in 2022, all with guaranteed contracts and most of them believed to have topped $100 million.

McIlroy, playing this week in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, was asked how much would make players feel validated for their decision to stay with the PGA Tour.

“I think the one thing we’ve learned in golf over the last two years is there’s never enough,” McIlroy replied.
