The city of Newport Beach in Southern California’s Orange County is known for its beaches, surfing, boating, shopping, and luxurious lifestyle. It’s a destination for dining in upscale restaurants or casual pubs and shopping in exclusive designer shops or browsing in beachfront boutiques. Its harbor is home to seagoing vessels from electric Duffy boats to multi-million dollar yachts, and the vibe is an eclectic mix of upscale, casual, beachy, and refined.

“The city boasts several micro-neighborhoods," Orange County food and travel writer Jenn Tanaka told Travel + Leisure. "Historic beach cottages at Crystal Cove State Park, opulent homes dotted along the hills of Newport Coast, renowned golf courses at The Resort at Pelican Hill , a quaint maritime village on Balboa Island. A ferry ride across the marina takes visitors to Balboa Fun Zone with its vintage ferris wheel, Duffy boats, and whale watching tours.”

Incorporated in 1906, the city has attracted vacationers from its early days, and in the 20th century, many celebrities made their homes in Newport Beach. Actors James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, and Shirley Temple were known to frequent the area, but the most famous celebrity resident was John Wayne, known as “The Duke.” His home can be seen on harbor tours, and the Orange County International Airport was named for him.

“Surf culture is the backbone of Newport Beach... experienced locals catch waves at The Wedge, while children splash at Corona del Mar,” Tanaka said. Elegant resorts, family-oriented hotels, and laid-back cottages provide visitors a place to stay while they enjoy the beaches, hiking trails, and attractions of Newport Beach. In summer, the population swells, and when the weather cools in late autumn, the secluded beaches welcome visitors to explore tide pools or stroll along the shore.

For a unique stay steps from the beach, the rustic cottages at Crystal Cove State Park , built around the 1920s, are a popular choice. Preserved and restored to meet current requirements, the cottages offer vintage furnishings, basic facilities, and plenty of character. Each cottage is equipped with a refrigerator and microwave. Linens and towels are provided, but traditional hotel services like daily housekeeping are not available. 

Newport Beach Hotel

Called “Newport’s Closest Hotel to the Beach,” Newport Beach Hotel is located steps from the sand, with 15 guest rooms in the main hotel plus five adjacent suites. Ideal for families, the Sailor Suites are complete with a full kitchen, living room, and one or two bedrooms. For an ocean view, book the Oceanfront Spa guest room. Rent a Duffy boat for the perfect way to experience Newport Beach’s harbor, ogle multi-million dollar mansions, and cruise among resident sea lions. Located at Fashion Island, Red O serves elevated authentic Mexican cuisine along with craft cocktails. Open for brunch, lunch, happy hour, and dinner, Red O’s flagship location in the renowned shopping center features a lively bar scene, resident DJs, and a gorgeous dining room.

A + O Restaurant at Balboa Bay Resort

Located at the waterfront Balboa Bay Resort , this restaurant serves casual California cuisine with views of boats cruising along the Newport Harbor. The decor, inspired by the restaurants on the Italian Riviera, includes white-washed wood panelling, an expansive outdoor patio with striped umbrellas, wicker chairs, and fire pits. 

The Cannery

Known as a historical landmark with a commitment to serving the freshest seafood for the last hundred years, The Cannery covers more than 100 years of history. It began as a commercial fish cannery in 1921 and continues to be a local favorite. Open for brunch, lunch, and dinner, The Cannery overlooks the Rhine Canal. 

Located in the newly reopened VEA Newport Beach hotel, VIEW restaurant serves California coastal cuisine and handcrafted cocktails in its intimate dining room and on its outdoor Lanai, where guests enjoy views of the Pacific and firepit seating. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, brunch, dinner, and there’s a late night menu until midnight.

The Best Times to Visit 

The weather in Newport Beach is generally mild throughout the year, with the warmest months from July through September when temperatures reach into the low 70s, and occasionally a bit higher. Winter months are cooler with some rain, and temperatures rarely dip below 50. In May and June, coastal cities experience a marine layer, causing the cool, cloudy mornings that locals call “May Gray” and “June Gloom.”

The cooler seasons are perfect for hiking, biking along the coast, and strolling along the beach. Surfers are in the ocean year-round, with wetsuits when the water is colder. For beachgoers, the warm summer and early autumn sunshine are their favorite times in Newport Beach.

“The October Newport Beach Film Festival , founded in 1999, brings A-listers and celebrities to the southern California locale each year,” according to Tanaka. In June, there’s the Baroque Music Festival in Corona del Mar. Shoppers love Newport Beach year round, but the year-end festive season is a special time with gorgeous holiday decorations. Whale watching fans head to Newport Beach during the gray whale migration from around December-April.

Newport Beach is located on the southern California coast about 40 miles south of Los Angeles and about 90 miles north of San Diego. Five airports offer access to Newport Beach: John Wayne Orange County Airport (SNA), Long Beach Airport (LGB), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), San Diego International Airport (SNA), and Ontario International Airport (ONT). John Wayne Airport is the closest, just six miles away. From Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), a shuttle takes visitors to Newport Beach in about an hour and a half for approximately $100.

This picturesque Southern California beach town (made famous by the television series The O.C. ) has an expansive waterfront with many attractions including fabulous beaches, hiking trails, cycling trails, the largest recreational harbor on the west coast, sunset cruises, surfing, and harbor-front promenades.

From surfing to paddleboarding, relaxing on the beach, playing golf, and shopping, Newport Beach has something for everyone. There are hundreds of excellent restaurants, wine bars, cocktail bars, and great brunch spots that make it a foodie destination in itself.

Top 10 Things To Do In Newport Beach

There are plenty of things to do in Newport Beach, and each time you visit you will find something new to do. But with so many options, where should you begin? Here are our top 10 things to do in Newport Beach that we recommend for first-time visitors to the city.

1) Visit Crystal Cove State Park

Crystal Cove State Park is one of Orange County’s largest parks that overlooks the natural seashore. The park features 3.2 miles of beach, 2,400 acres of backcountry wilderness and an offshore underwater area. 

Located off Pacific Coast Highway between Corona del Mar and Laguna Beach the park is a must when you are visiting the city for a morning (opens at 6am) or late afternoon hike (closes at sunset).  

There is also federally listed Historic District that you can explore in the park that is open until 10pm, which is an enclave of 46 coastal cottages originally built as a seaside colony in the 1930’s & 40’s located nestled around the entrance of Los Trancos Creek.

2) Visit Balboa Island

Balboa Island is a small island in Newport Beach that you can reach by car or by Balboa Island Ferry. Head to Marine Avenue which is the main street and is home to a selection of chic coastal shops and restaurants.

You cannot visit the island without trying the famous Balboa Bar or Frozen Banana. These tasty treats have been mainstays for nearly 75 years, and are dipped in chocolate and covered with a variety of coatings from nuts and chocolate sprinkles.

3) Wander The Shops At Lido Marina Village

Lido Marina Village is an upscale area located right on the water with a range of chic stores and waterside restaurants. This is a great area to grab a light brunch at Zinque or Malibu Farm , or if you prefer a more fine dining experience you will also find Nobu here. 

Follow up your lunch with a visit to the shops, my favorites in this area are Sugar Paper LA a boutique stationary store, Stoney Clover Lane, Eberjey and Love Shack Fancy.

4) Rent A Duffy Boat

One of the most quintessential Newport Beach activities is to rent a Duffy boat for the day and cruise around the harbor passing beautiful million dollar homes. I highly recommend bringing your own picnic and a few bottles of bubbly to enjoy. 

If a Duffy is a little slow going for you, you can also rent a speed boat which you can take out of the harbor into the open water where you will see sealions, dolphins and if you are lucky whales. 

5) Watch Surfers At The Wedge

The Wedge Newport Beach is a famous spot in Southern California that is known for its shore-breaking waves that can reach up to 30 feet. This is an area only for the most experienced surfers and even then you will mostly see people body boarding! 

6) Visit Newport Beach and Newport Pier

The actual beach of Newport Beach is the area around the Newport Pier. If you come to the beach early in the day you can catch the historic Dory fleet fish market and then walk the pier. If you want to try your hand at surfing, a good spot to try is known as Blackies, located between the pier and the 28th Street jetty.

7) Visit Corona Del Mar State Beach

A 30-acres park with a half-a-mile beach ideal for surfing, swimming or sunbathing. This park also has picnic benches great for having an afternoon picnic.

8) Visit The Spa At Pelican Hill

With 22 treatment rooms, this world-class spa is the perfect place to go for some much-needed relaxation. Along with lounges, saunas, steam rooms, and soaking tubs offering a large variety of treatments. 

9) Go On A Whale Watching Tour

Dolphins, whales and other marine life can be spotted year round in the Newport Beach area and while you may be able to spot them from the land, its far better to get out on the water. There are plenty of whale watching tours to choose from including this Ultimate Whale Watching Adventure which is a two hour cruise.

10) Cycle From Newport Beach To Huntington Beach

This 12-mile beach cycling trail is mostly across flat land but is perfect for an afternoon cycle along the coastline.

The rooms and villas have a combination of ocean view rooms, accessible rooms, all in various configurations.

How To Get To Newport Beach

The closest large airport to Newport Beach is in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is located around 45 miles or just over one hour (traffic dependent) from Newport Beach. From there you can rent a car, or take a taxi to Newport Beach.

Alternatively, Newport Beach has a small, stress-free airport, John Wayne Airport-Orange County (SNA) , which serves a number of domestic routes via Southwest, Delta, American Airlines, United, and Alaska Airlines.

Many visit the oceanfront area for a taste of opulence, but the best things to do in Newport Beach extend beyond the posh Orange County city’s tony shopping centers and country clubs. Sure, yachts, canals, and luxury cars are common sightings here, but so too are whales, waves and pristine patches of sand. Even still, Newport is one of the wealthiest places in the country (even more so than its neighboring Orange County cities) so don't expect to find much grunge in this affluent coastal town. In fact, you're more likely to see one of The Real Housewives in the flesh. While some of the most frequented beaches in Newport are Corona del Mar State Beach (great for swimming) and The Wedge (great for surfing), Newport Beach Pier and Balboa Pier also draw large crowds to the waterfront for leisure. Fun fact: while it's called Balboa Island, this man-made community is in fact a peninsula .  Situated between the surfer-filled shores of Huntington Beach and the stunning canyons of Laguna Beach, Newport Beach and its patchwork of man-made islands offer a mix of luxury living with some of the  best beaches  and best restaurants in SoCal. 1.  Whale Watching

Whale watching is one of the best ways to experience the Pacific Ocean's natural beauty, not to mention the marine life that sits just below its surface. Newport is lucky enough to sit in the path of blue, humpback, and, most notably, gray whale migrations. Within the city there are a number of competitively priced whale-watching tours and, unlike other popular ports, the majority are more than mere harbor cruises.

Visit this sprawling Mediterranean-inspired, five-star resort overlooking the Pacific along Newport Coast. You don’t need to book a night to take advantage of its amenities, though, including a full-service spa, three dining options, and a 36-hole, 400-acre golf course with its own golf academy. Pelican Hill has around-the-clock butler and concierge service and is also home to one of the world's largest circular pools (136 feet).

3.  Balboa Island

Of all Newport Beach’s man-made islands, Balboa is by far the most charming. It also feels more like a quaint East Coast harborfront village than the rest of Newport’s distinctly Southern Californian settlements. The first order of business: getting your hands on one of the island’s famed frozen bananas. Choose from rivals Sugar 'N Spice or Dad’s Donut Shop & Bakery ; both claim to be the originators of the chocolate-covered frozen treat. Then take a jaunt around the 1.6-mile boardwalk that surrounds the island or browse the mom-and-pop shops along Marine Avenue. Visitors to Balboa Island can enter by driving onto it via Marine Avenue, but it’s far easier—and more fun—to park your car on the Balboa Peninsula and take the Balboa Island Ferry for a quick and scenic five-minute trip across the water.

One of two piers located along Newport’s coastline, this oceanfront lookout extends from a busy commercial district at the start of the Balboa Peninsula. Parking can be a bit tough since it’s located next to the area’s biggest—but still not big enough—municipal beach lot. Though the building at the end of the pier is currently vacant, many are hoping for a restaurant revival soon.

Bury yourself in one of 15,000 volumes about the Pacific Southwest at this library and botanical garden. The 2.2-acre gardens feature an exotic array of flora—including an assortment of succulents and a Japanese garden—as well as an on-site café called 608 Dahlia. Admission is just $5. Check their website for ongoing special events. 

6.  Balboa Pier

The main attraction at the end of this pier is the original Ruby’s Diner location, a ’40s-inspired local chain. You’ll pay a premium for some alright burgers, so consider a scenic stroll along the expanse if you don’t feel like springing for a meal. Balboa Pier is located just blocks away from the Balboa Island Ferry and the Balboa Fun Zone. The pier is open for fishing, but most visitors come for the photo ops and to watch surfers below.

7.  The Wedge

Make no mistake: If you’re looking for a beach to unwind in the sunshine, there are miles of wide, sandy stretches that you should visit instead of the Wedge. But if you want to scope out one of the most notable (and sometimes overwhelmingly popular) surf spots in Southern California, this is the place. A long jetty on the eastern edge coupled with the shape of the coastline bounces waves into each other to create near-shore swells as high as 30 feet. Parking is limited to the adjacent neighborhoods, so hoof it past multi-million-dollar beach houses and through entrances on either Channel Road or M Street.

8.  Balboa Fun Zone

It’s no Disneyland, but it’s also a mere fraction of the price. The historic Balboa Fun Zone is currently being restored under new ownership but is still open to the public. The few carnival-esque rides here aren’t particularly memorable, but the signature waterfront Ferris wheel and merry-go-round do have some charm to them—after all, the entire amusement park dates back to 1936.

9.  Fashion Island

There’s nothing at this vast Orange County mall that you won’t find in L.A., but it’s a good one-stop-shop if you’re in the area. There are four department stores (Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom, and Neiman Marcus), along with an Apple Store, a Barnes & Noble and a selection of fashion stores that are a cut above the usual mall offerings (Balenciaga, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Prada). Warning: it can get insanely busy on weekends.

This 3.2-mile stretch of sandy expanses and coastal cliffs bridges the border between Newport Beach and Laguna Beach. Come to Crystal Cove State Park to explore the tide pools and canyons during the day, or reserve a campsite to spend the night. The beach park also has 2,400 acres of wilderness that's popular among mountain bikers and hikers. Crystal Cove's Historic District includes 21 reasonably-priced cottages available for rent, plus the legendary Beachcomber Cafe that's open to the public.

Newport Beach is likely what comes to mind when you close your eyes and daydream of California. It has those postcard-worthy views and miles-on-miles of pristine coastline. Hitting the beach, taking a Duffy boat for a spin and enjoying a Balboa Bar are just part of the glory of the Newport experience. 

On the water

Bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins, gray whales and fin whales are regularly spotted off the shore of Newport Beach

After going whale watching on one of Newport Coastal Adventure's Zodiacs, you might reject big boats forever. These customized vessels hold no more than 15 passengers, and can vroom up to 30 mph. That speed is what gets each tour out into the Pacific Ocean — and all the aquatic action — faster than other boats. The journey feels akin to being on a National Geographic expedition, with the crew expertly maneuvering the waves to encounter what the ocean holds. Because wildlife is unpredictable, there is no guarantee of what you will find. But recent sightings have included gray whales, a pod of 1,000 common dolphins and rare orcas. 

Duffy boats are a way of life in Newport Beach

For a more leisurely cruise, book a sunset ride with Sea Señorita Duffy . A Duffy is an electric boat, and Sea Señorita has two in its fleet, both adorably decorated with striped covers, twinkling lights and tassels. You can bring your own snacks and drinks, or have a provisions shopper pick up some goodies. From there, a driver navigates the boat; all you have to do is relax and enjoy the scenery. The cruise goes through Newport Harbor, passing by homes once owned by celebrities like Shirley Temple, Nicolas Cage and John Wayne.

On the sand

The tide pools at Crystal Cove State Park offer a glimpse of marine life

Crystal Cove State Park is a sprawling treasure, with six beaches stretched across 3.2 miles of coastline. For the curious, there are four tide pool viewing areas in the park, at Rocky Bight, Pelican Point, Treasure Cove and Reef Point, and it is always fun to head over at low tide to see what marine life is visible. Crystal Cove State Park also has 18 miles of trails that go through riparian woodlands and have beautiful ocean views.

Surf's up at The Wedge, a popular spot to go bodyboarding and bodysurfing. Since waves can reach 30 feet here, the locale is not ideal for beginners. But it is a great place to visit when you want a lovely view. Try to time a visit here later in the day, so you can enjoy the sunset from the jetty.

On the land

The Balboa Fun Zone has a Ferris wheel and arcade

For more than 100 years, Balboa Island has been charming visitors with its boutiques and restaurants. Stop for a meal, then walk down Marine Avenue and peek inside the shops. While there, go to Dad's Donut & Bakery Shop or Sugar 'n Spice for a ubiquitous frozen banana or Balboa Bar. If you have kids, head down to the ferry ($1.50 for adults, .50 for children) and go across to the Balboa Fun Zone . This small amusement park on Balboa Peninsula has a Ferris wheel and arcade.

Even if it is your first time at Wilma's Patio as soon as you walk in, you will be treated like a regular. This cozy neighborhood spot is known for its warm service and generous portions, with an eclectic menu that includes everything from multiple Benedicts to enchiladas and chile rellenos. The Crazy Salad is a deliciously different way to eat your greens, as it is topped with both ranch and Italian dressings and crunchy noodles. The fish and chips are crispy yet light, with the cottage fries nice and fluffy. Save room for a slice of boysenberry pie a la mode. 

The Cannery is classic Newport Beach. The building dates to 1921, when it opened as a commercial fishing cannery. Today, The Cannery is a bright and modern restaurant that serves fresh seafood and steaks cooked on a wood-burning grill. The seafood options range from a tasty lobster roll filled with huge chunks of Maine lobster to cioppino with mussels, clams, shrimp and the catch of the day. You can drive here, of course, but you can also arrive by boat and dock right outside the restaurant. 

Joey Newport Beach is all about bringing flavors together. The menu is inspired by almost the entire globe, with butter chicken, Baja fish tacos and steak frites among the offerings. There are fusion dishes as well: The tataki-style steak with seared salmon sushi is a spin on surf and turf. End your meal on a high note with the butter cake. The sleek dining room is good for pairs and groups of friends, and there is also a spacious patio with fire pits and its own bar.

The Beachcomber Cafe is right on the beach at Crystal Cove State Park, with the waves so close you can almost touch them. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the Beachcomber is known for its Big Bad Bloody Mary, a guest favorite that comes with a crab claw and jumbo shrimp. The coconut-macadamia pancakes are another popular choice. The fluffy pancakes are studded with nuts and topped with warm coconut syrup. 

A seaside escape

The Balboa Bay Resort sits on 15 waterfront acres

Balboa Bay Resort is on prime real estate with million dollar views of the water. The service here is top-notch, and it starts with the helpful valets who greet guests on arrival. After check-in, it is a quick walk to your room or suite, which come with coffee machines and mini-refrigerators. Treat yourself to a bay view. These accommodations have private balconies, where you can sit and watch as rowers, paddle boarders and sailboats glide by.

Guests can rent Duffy boats, kayaks, paddle boards and beach cruisers for a fee (just ask the concierge), and if you have somewhere to go within two miles of the resort, take advantage of the complimentary shuttle service. The valets will drop you off (and pick you up) in a roomy SUV.

A good meal is steps away. The property's A + O Restaurant and Bar focuses on comforting coastal fare, and the rich clam chowder with bacon lardons and hot crab dip are two standouts.

E ven if you’ve never been to Newport Beach , it’s a place that’ll probably feel familiar. Over the years, it’s played a background role in many films and television shows, from Beaches and Treasure Island to The OC and Arrested Development . There’s even a swish film festival held every October, which draws in the stars.

This coastal city is the epitome of Orange County living, with al fresco restaurants dotted around a yacht-filled harbour, miles of sandy beaches, and laidback bars where locals drink rosé in flip flops. With 10 distinct neighbourhoods, Newport Beach is more a city of villages, from Balboa Island (reached via a cute, three-minute ferry) to Corona del Mar, where clifftop homes overlook a surf beach below. The Pacific Coast Highway cuts through the city, making it a good stopover for those doing the classic road trip down the California coast.

If you’re ready to live that OC life, this guide brings you the best things to do in Newport Beach, from the hottest hotels and restaurants to the activities you won’t want to miss.

Best things to do

Whale watching.

This stretch of coastline is renowned for its marine life, with whales and dolphins congregating in their droves just off the shore. Head out with Newport Coastal Adventure , and you’ll speed along the coast on whip-fast Zodiac boats, accompanied by naturalists whose knowledge is second to none. Between May and November, you might see fin whales, blue whales, humpbacks and, in all likelihood, hundreds upon hundreds of common dolphins, who surround the boats leaping and playing around the bow all year round.

The Back Bay is a peaceful wetland nature reserve, where Sunday morning joggers make their way around the hiking trail and people bike along the wooden bridges and boardwalk. You can rent stand-up paddleboards at Pirate Coast Paddle and head out on the water, or go one better with a SUP yoga class from SoCal Paddle Yoga . On the calm waters of the bay, you’ll be led through a series of poses on the board, for an experience that’s a little more challenging but a hell of a lot more fun.

A good way to get your bearings in the marina (and to snoop on all the enviable waterside real estate) is by taking an electric Duffy boat from Sea Señorita . You’ll get taken all around the harbour, passing seals and sea lions flopped on jetties along the way. As you go, you can tuck into charcuterie and sparkling wine, or take advantage of the Dock and Dine scheme, with your journey ending at the jetty of a local waterside restaurant – sushi at Buddha’s Favorite is a good shout.

Visit Crystal Cove

Part of the Crystal Cove State Park, the Crystal Cove Conservancy is a collection of shorefront cottages, restaurants and hiking trails along the beach, which Bette Midler fans will almost certainly recognise. The little cottage at the end of the sand is where they shot the movie Beaches , and there’s an excellent little museum inside that tells the story of all the other films made there. But you can also just sit on the deck and listen to ‘‘Wind Beneath My Wings’’ as you watch the waves roll in.

Best time to visit Newport Beach

Oddly, May and June can be fairly murky in California – earning the local nicknames of Grey May and June Gloom. The best time to go is September, when the sun is still strong but the summer crowds have started to disperse – just be mindful of Labor Day weekend (the first Monday in September), when prices are higher.

Where to stay in Newport Beach

VEA Newport Beach is right by Fashion Island, with great views over the neighbouring golf course and out to the ocean. The rooms are bright and sleek, and the beds super plush. Each morning, there are complimentary yoga and HIIT classes in the fitness suite (where there are also Peloton bikes) and there’s a decent-sized pool and hot tub, complete with a pool bar. The all-day VIEW restaurant is a bit of a draw for locals, and you can get a kale salad, sushi and a BLT with avocado.

Hotel Amenities

Health & wellbeing, crystal cove conservancy.

There are 24 beach cottages at Crystal Cove Conservancy, 14 of which are private and 10 laid out dorm style, with private rooms but shared public spaces. As it’s a non-profit, the prices are kept reasonable, but the cottages are the ultimate in beach-shack cool, with original mid-century features, rolltop baths and incredible views – keep an eye out for dolphins and whales passing by. The cottages are right on the sand, and as you might expect, bookings are competitive – reservations are opened every day for the date six months ahead, so it’s a Glastonbury-esque speed click if you want to snag one yourself.

Set on the waterfront at Lido Isle, Lido House has the kind of breezy, beach house interiors you’d see in a Nancy Meyers movie – think white wood, blue stripes and subtle nautical notes. There’s a saltwater pool and American lawn games like cornhole and giant beer pong. If you’re visiting as a group, the on-site cottage is very cool.

Best cafes and restaurants in Newport Beach

In Lido, Malibu Farm is a classic brunch spot with a menu that’s oh-so-Californian: think raw Brussels sprout salad, cauliflower crust pizza and acai bowls. There are tables on the water and usually a few cute dogs underfoot. Over at Crystal Cove, the retro Beachcomber Café is the place to go for a hearty American breakfast, with giant burritos stuffed with turkey chorizo and pepper jack cheese, and fluffy lemon ricotta pancakes. Their Bloody Marys are particularly jazzy, served with a crab claw and jumbo shrimp poking out of the glass.

If you want a taste of the boujie country club life, get a waterside table at A+O Restaurant in Balboa Bay Resort. You can watch the sailboats drift up the Newport Marina while tucking into Caesar salads and fish tacos. In the summer, there’s an outdoor tequila bar for mezcals and margaritas. If you’re at Corona del Mar beach, grab a sandwich from The Jetty , where you can get tuna melts the size of doorstops and poke bowls loaded with tofu, just steps from the sand.

It’s not often that you’ll find an elegant tasting menu made in the same kitchen that’s slinging out wood-fired pizzas. But that’s just what you get at Bello by Sandro Nardone . Foodies can go for the Bello Chef’s Table experience, where you can watch chef Zach Scherer prepare elaborate dishes with microgreens and homemade vinegars, but those on a budget can get an excellent prosciutto pizza without breaking the bank.

A Restaurant is a classic New York-style steakhouse, where the lights are dim, the booths are cosy and the steaks are massive. Each one comes with a whole head of roasted garlic, the bulbs squeezed out on the beef by your waiter.

You can’t leave Newport Beach without getting a frozen banana, dipped in chocolate then the topping of your choice, such as chopped nuts or Fruity Pebbles. Made famous by Arrested Development , there are two competing joints that claim to have invented the treat, but the best is Sugar ‘n Spice – get the frozen banana dipped in everything, which is a combination of all the toppings.

Best bars in Newport Beach

In Newport Beach, more champagne is consumed per capita than anywhere else in the US, so it’s only polite to follow their lead. The best place to go for a glass is Topside at Lido House – it’s the only rooftop bar in the city, with great views of the ocean and a cosy little seating area inside a lighthouse tower. They also have their own signature champagne blend from Piper-Heidsieck.

On Balboa Island, Huskins is a small-batch coffee shop with an airy, Parisian vibe; their cold brew hits the spot on a sunny day. This is California, so you will probably get a craving for a green juice at some stage. If so, head to Porrovita near the Lido Marina Village, where you can add hemp or matcha to their “Kale-i-fornia” juice.

Best beaches

The main drag at Newport Beach is a wide stretch of sand where you’ll find the pier and a gaggle of beachside bars, cafés and restaurants. But the better beach is a little further down at Corona Del Mar, where the bay is sheltered and surrounded by giant volcanic boulders. Further along you’ll find Little Corona del Mar Beach, a teeny bay flanked with cliffs and popular with divers. On a clear day, you can see out to Catalina Island (of Step Brothers Catalina Wine Mixer fame).

Where to shop

The name is a bit of a giveaway, but Fashion Island is a shopping hotspot, a giant outdoor mall with a blend of local stores and well-known names. There’s an outlet of the nearby Laguna Beach jewellery brand Gorjana, as well as Voluspa and Faherty, for that California casual aesthetic.

There’s more of a boutique feel to Lido Marina Village , with the kind of small, independent stores frequented by locals with glossy hair and fancy athleisure gear. Skip the vintage rails (where you might see an old M&S jumper on sale for $225 – seriously) and head over the street to Swellegant , where the racks are packed with dresses, jumpsuits and accessories from the 1950s to the 1980s. At the back of the store, there’s a bargain rail where everything is $4.

On Sunday mornings, there’s a farmer’s market held by the Newport Beach pier, where you’ll find everything from organic dog treats to activated charcoal lemonades, as well as local berries, greens and freshly baked breads.

How to travel around Newport Beach

You can walk around each neighbourhood, but generally not between them as they’re pretty spread out. Public transport is fairly light on the ground – most people rely on their cars – so if you’re not doing a road trip or simply don’t want to drive, Uber is readily available; it generally works out cheaper than parking, too. Expect to pay around $12–$15 for a 10-minute journey.

Architectural highlights

For Selling Sunset -style snooping (the Oppenheim OC office is just around the corner) take a walk along Ocean Boulevard in Corona del Mar. Each home is a jaw dropper, with price tags often nudging $20m.
