How to get to York from London

York is easily accessible from London. If you are based in the capital there are a number of options to get to the city.

Option 1 – By car

York is located 200 miles to the north of London.

Plan at least 4 hours to drive between the 2 cities (this will vary depending on traffic but it can be a busy route). Other English cities you will pass along the way are Leicester, Nottingham, Sheffield and Leeds.

If you are planning a short day trip to York I recommend parking in one of the Park & Ride car parks and taking the free bus into the city.

Option 2: By train

York is easy to reach by train from any major city in the UK.

York train station is a 10 minute walk from the centre of the city.

The trip takes an average of 3 hours from London and 2 hours from Edinburgh

It is possible to take a direct train from London to York. Click here for train times and tickets.

Option 3: By bus

It is possible to take a bus from Victoria Coach Station to York. The journey takes approximately 6 hours.

This is the cheapest way to travel to York from London though so if you are on a budget this may be your best option. Click here for coach times and prices from National Express.

Tips for visiting York & Yorkshire

• If you want to see the highlights of York consider joining this best of York guided walking tour or take the hop-on hop-off bus around the city.
• If York is just one of the places you wish to visit in Yorkshire don’t underestimate the size of the county! It is England’s largest county and is roughly half the size of Belgium. It can be divided into 4 smaller areas – North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, East Yorkshire and South Yorkshire.
• There are are some large cities in Yorkshire such as York, Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford and Ripon but also lots of charming towns and villages too.
• The Yorkshire Dales National Park covers thousands of square miles (in fact most of the county) and includes moors, valleys, hills, waterfalls and villages within its boundaries.
• There are numerous hiking trails in the park including the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail, Yorkshire Three Peaks and Malham Cove and Gordale Scar. If you are planning a hike ensure you prepare thoroughly.
• There are two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in North Yorkshire which are the Howardian Hills and Nidderdale.

Tips for driving in Yorkshire

• If you are planning to hire a car and drive in Yorkshire it is important to pick the right rental car. In rural areas the roads may be single lane with no central line so don’t choose a large SUV or saloon car if there are only 2 of you.
• If you wish to stop to admire the views ensure it is safe to do so.
• In winter the weather conditions can change rapidly and snow can often make the roads impassable. There may also be no mobile signal in more isolated spots so ensure you share your travel plans before setting out.
• If you prefer to avoid driving there are a number of tours which you can join to enjoy the sights of the Yorkshire Dales.
• While there are 15 public car parks available around the city of York I recommend accessing one of the 6 Park & Ride services which allow you to park for free in a secure car park and complete your journey into the city by bus. You can find out more about this scheme here .

Best time to travel to new york.

Visiting New York is worthwhile at any time of year, but I personally like the warm months best. Summer in New York can be very hot and humid. So, for many, the best times to visit New York is April and June, and September and October.

Spending Christmas in New York or enjoying the pre-Christmas season in New York City is also a wonderful experience.  The ice rinks are open, the city is beautifully decorated, and, if it snows, the dream vacation at wintertime is perfect!

Paying in New York

You can pay for almost everything with your credit card, even the smallest amounts. Credit cards are accepted in hotels, stores, restaurants, and bars. Don’t have one yet? Then, check out the best credit card to have in the USA here.

Best Way to Travel in New York

Finding your way around New York is quite easy, even if it doesn’t look like it at first. The streets’ checkerboard pattern makes finding your way around easy. These are the best ways to get around New York:

Metro / Subway: If you have longer distances ahead of you, then the Subway is your friend, because here you can travel really cheap. It’s easy to use! The MetroCard is available at every Subway station. You can buy single rides or the popular MetroCard for 7 days; that way you can travel for a week in New York at a fixed price. Taxi:  In New York, you can choose between the Yellow Cab and Uber. You can check out our tips and all the information you need to know in our following blog:  Taxi in New York City .

By bike: With many of the New York sightseeing passes (you can find out more about this budget tip in my New York Pass comparison ), the bike rental is included. We ourselves really love using New York’s Citi Bikes. This city bike program has over 1,000 stations throughout New York City, and it’s super-cheap. We’ll show you how it works in the Citi Bike New York article.

On Foot: You’ll be surprised how much walking you’ll do in New York. After all, there’s something to see on every corner. So be sure to bring comfortable shoes!

Where to Stay in New York?

Which neighborhood is best for you depends on several things: your interests, how close you want to be to the attractions and what your travel budget is. In the image below, I’ve drawn you my favorite neighborhoods of New York including the main attractions nearby.

And, on the subject of safety: In all of Manhattan, the Bronx , Brooklyn, and large parts of Queens, you don’t have to worry about being out and about in the evening. New York City is one of the safest cities in the world!

Where Should you Stay in New York?

Manhattan – it doesn’t get more central than this: Manhattan is the most famous borough of them all. Plus, it contains 95% of all the attractions New York is known for. Everything is within easy reach, and you are right in the middle of it all. On the other hand, the hotels are a bit more expensive than in Brooklyn or Queens .

Brooklyn – urban and relaxed: For a long time, Brooklyn was the insider’s tip: now it’s “completely” normal neighborhoods. However, you’ll quickly notice one thing: life is much more normal, because it’s more of a residential area. It’s super relaxed, pleasant, and just as diverse as Manhattan. Above all, you can enjoy the Manhattan skyline from here!

Queens – the new trendy neighborhood: Queens is a bit more “normal” than Brooklyn is, but, lately, we’ve noticed that it is getting more and more gentrified. The hotels in Long Island City (not to be confused with Long Island!) are especially popular because they are cheaper compared to Manhattan—and they have a perfect connection to the Subway, which makes Queens a great alternative to Manhattan and Brooklyn.

What to See in New York?

One thing to know in advance: just because there is so much to see in New York, a little planning makes absolute sense. For highlights like the Empire State Building ( here ), the Edge Hudson Yards observation deck ( here ) or the One World Observatory ( here ), I recommend buying the tickets online in advance. This will not only save you waiting time on site, but you can also be sure that you will actually be able to visit your desired sights.

These are my tips after more than 20 visits to New York:

• Observation decks:  New York City has no less than five (!) major observation decks to offer, and each one is a dream in itself. My two favorites are The Edge Hudson Yards and the One World Observatory , because from here you have a sensational view of New York from above and you can see the Empire State Building . From the end of 2021, another cool option will be added with the glass One Vanderbilt . One more thing about the Empire State Building: It’s the most visited observation deck in New York, so it’s always busy. Avoid the crowds in the morning – and if you really want to go to the Empire State Building in the evening, choose Thursday, Friday or Saturday. During those times, a saxophonist plays on the observation deck. Important: book the Skip-the-Line-Tickets (you can do that here). Then, you can easily save 1-2 hours of waiting time!
• Visit the Statue of Liberty : The trip from Battery Park to the Statue of Liberty is super-popular. To save yourself long waiting times, make sure you take the first ferry of the day. Here, you can find the best Statue of Liberty Cruises right now.
• Definitely take a boat tour , because seeing New York from the water is like being on vacation. Choices range from the free Staten Island Ferry or the NYC Ferry ($2.90 each way) to sailing tours (gorgeous) and the classic sightseeing tours that are included with all major New York passes.
• Walk along the High Line from the Meatpacking District to Hudson Yards .
• Visit Times Square in the evening – that’s when it’s at its most impressive.
• Relax in Central Park or Bryant Park .
• Plan a maximum of three attractions per day . After all, you don’t want any sightseeing stress.

The best shopping areas in New York are Broadway, SoHo , Chelsea, the Meatpacking District, and Williamsburg in Brooklyn. And, of course, 5th Avenue!

Avoid Times Square for shopping!

A real tourist trap are the stores around Times Square – they are not only overpriced, but also the quality is not right in most cases!

Visit a Broadway Show

New York is known for its many musicals and Broadway shows – most of which are performed in the Theatre District around Times Square. Here are our tips on the  best Broadway Shows in New York . How To Have The Ultimate Weekend In York, England – York Travel Guide

From walking the city walls, to the beauty of York Minster and the old-world charm of the tearooms and shops, it’s time for the ultimate weekend in York!

I’ve just got back from a whistle-stop tour of three beautiful English cities – Durham, York and Lincoln . I’ve written all about my trip, but I felt like I had SO much to share from York, that I’ve decided to write an entire post about the city. Out of the three, I think it’s the best option for a weekend break.

There’s lots to see and do, a lovely buzz, and tonnes of cafes, bars and restaurants to choose from too. It also surprised me just how easy it is to get to York from London. The LNER train to York takes under two hours, and once there, the station is nice and close to the action.

York is compact enough not to need a car, and large enough to keep discovering new things. I was only there a few days, and no doubt there is SO much I missed… but, I think this guide to spending the weekend in York is a great place to start.

One big recommendation I have is, if you like photography, to set your alarm early! Even in the winter, York is a touristy city, so places like The Shambles and York Minster get really busy. If you want to take some pretty photos of the city, get up early and catch that lovely morning glow. I certainly don’t regret the early start to capture these photos…

So whether you want to eat your way around the city, immerse yourself in its history, or just amble from shop, to café, to attraction, it’s time to find out the best things to do in York on your special weekend away.

Top Things To Do In York

Walk york city walls.

You can’t get closer to history than by walking on it! York’s City Walls are the longest medieval town walls in England (3.4km). While the original city walls were built around 71 AD, the majority of what you se today date back to the 12th – 14th Century. Not only is it a lovely experience to get right up close to York’s history, it offers a great tour of the city, showing you plenty of the key sights along the way!  

Visit York Minster (And Climb The Tower)

The icon of the city, you can’t visit York and not venture inside York Minster . Beautiful outside, the cathedral is even more breath taking on the inside. Constructed between 1230 and 1472, it’s an incredible example of gothic architecture.

Once inside you can buy a ticket to climb the tower, which I’d definitely recommend. It offers 360-degree views of York, and is a great place to snap some pics.

It’s worth noting that there’s only one route up and down, so you’ll be booked onto a time slot and make the climb as a group. If you’re claustrophobic, don’t like heights, or have little kids, I’d avoid it!

York Minster Ticket Price: Adults £11, seniors and students £9, children free (with a paying adult)

York Minster + Tower Ticket Price: Adults £16, seniors and students £14, children £5 (children must be 8+ to climb the tower)

Go For A Drink In One Of The Most Intriguing Bars In York

  If you like a drink, then you’re going to love York! There are pubs and bars all over the city, and lots are packed full of history and character. Ye Olde Starre Inne is one of the oldest pubs in the city (dating back to 1644).

Meanwhile, The Golden Fleece is another ancient wonder, and is best known for being the most haunted pub in York. There have been plenty of ghostly sightings, with many people spotting Lady Alice Peckett (wife of the mayor of York and hotel owner) wandering the hotel areas and moving furniture in the night! Eeek!

If gin is your favourite tipple, head to Evil Eye. I didn’t have time to squeeze in a visit, but the bar is famous for its gin menu, and by the shopfront packed with gin bottles from around the world, you can see it takes it very seriously!

If you’re a beer lover, don’t miss The House of Trembling Madness – a medieval alehouse which started life as part of the first Norman house in York way back in 1180 AD. They serve lots of cool craft beers, plus during the day I saw lots of people stopping by for coffee and cake.

Climb Clifford’s Tower

I visited Clifford’s Tower twice during my time in York. The first time was at sunrise to take some pictures. The second was to climb it. The tower is almost all that remains of York Castle, which was built by William the Conqueror.

From the top, there are some lovely views of the city, including over to York Minster… so even if you’ve climbed the cathedral tower, you’ll enjoy a totally different view from here! Oh and York Castle Museum is close by, if you want to learn more about that after your climb!

Discover York’s Viking Heritage At The Jorvik Viking Centre

It’s pretty incredible to imagine York, or Jorvik, as a bustling Viking city around 1,000 years ago! In fact, by 1066 over 15,000 people lived in Jorvik making it England’s 2nd city.

This city centre museum sits on some of the ruins, features ancient objects found on the site, and gives you a feel for what life would have been like back then. There’s a unique ride, which brings the old city to life, with animatronics, sounds and even smells!

Jorvik Viking Centre Ticket Price: Adults £12, concessions £10, children £8 (age 5-16)  

If you’re planning to visit lots of York’s main attractions, it might be worth picking up a York Pass  which includes entry to 38 attractions in and around York.

Have A Meal At Bettys (And Try A Fat Rascal)  

Oh what a reputation Bettys has! It’s THE place in York for afternoon tea or a sweet treat. I learned more about the history of the tearoom when I visited, discovering it was set up by a Swiss baker 100 years ago. For that reason, there are plenty of Swiss dishes on the menu too.

Knowing I’d be eating my bodyweight in sweet treats during my time in York, I went for a savoury main course. Bettys is famous for the fish gratin, which was creamy, with a hint of smokiness, and absolutely delicious.

If you visit Bettys, you can’t miss trying a ‘Fat Rascal’. I grabbed one to take home. It’s a type of scone created in Yorkshire, which resembles a face, with eyes made from glacé cherries and a mouth made from almonds!

Wander The Shambles

The Shambles is one of those quintessential old English streets you see on postcards of England! With wonderfully wonky buildings dating back to the 14 th Century, and a mix of tourist shops and foodie options, it’s a lovely place to have a wander. These days it’s a little overrun with Harry Potter shops (as it’s likened to Diagon Alley), but there are some charming shops to pop into too.

The Shambles gets very busy during the day – I fought through crowds on my first afternoon, and then decided to revisit early the next day to enjoy it without the people, and snap some photos with nobody else in!

Then Visit Shambles Market And Try Some Street Food

Just a street away from The Shambles is this market, which has a mix of traditional market traders (you know, fruit & veg, batteries, big pants…!) plus tourist stalls selling things like fudge. There are also several street food vendors, some in vans, others with more permanent setups.

The Indian street food and Moroccan wraps both smelled amazing, but I went for the ‘pinkey burger’ from The Taylor Made Kitchen. It came in a bright pink brioche bun, with halloumi, chorizo and tasty black garlic pesto.

There’s also a cool bar that looks like it’d fit in well in the Alps! On the menu – mulled wine, hot toddies, and crepes.

Stop For A Coffee In York City Centre

If you fancy a coffee and a cake in York, then there are SOOO many places to choose from! Here a few of my favourite cafes in York:

Brew and Brownie – I had a lovely coffee here, as the rain started to pelt down one afternoon. Relaxed vibes and nice cakes, plus they have their second café down the road – Brew and Brownie Bakehouse.

Mannion & Co – Close to Brew and Brownie, I stopped here after a long day of walking and couldn’t wait to treat myself. Step up the mint aero brownie. It was very naughty, but totally delicious.

Forty Five Vinyl Café – I didn’t have time to visit, but I passes by this York coffee shop a few times and thought it looked very cool! If you like retro vibes and a bit of vinyl, then it’s a great place to stop for a coffee.

I also had Gatehouse Coffee and Newgate Coffee Bar recommended by a few people, so I’ll be sure to check them out next time I visit York!  

Enjoy York’s Independent Shopping Scene

With plenty of time to mooch around the city, I absolutely loved how many cute boutiques and independent stores I stumbled across. Around Fossgate there were lots, including Botanic – a shop selling houseplants and botanical themed items and gifts. If you’re looking for gifts, check out Grey Bear, which had lots of cute items for sale. For vintage and lifestyle goodies, I really liked Dog and Bone.

If you like bookstores, you’re in luck – York has quite a few! Fossgate Books and Lucius Books are definitely worth a visit, especially if you’re looking for special editions or something unusual.

Enjoy A Northern Roast… In A Wrap

Before my visit, a friend of mine from York said “forget the history, we put everything in a wrap and people went crazy.” I laughed a lot at this, but it’s absolutely true! At The York Roast Co, you can get a whole roast dinner in a wrap. They have their roasted meats in the window, and I have to say I was pretty tempted when I saw them – they looked SO delicious.

Visit The National Railway Museum

One of York’s biggest and best attractions, the National Railway Museum is packed full of fascinating locomotives, from the oldest steam trains and royal carriages, to Eurostar and Japan’s Shinkansen. This is definitely one of the best free things to do in York!

It’s a really interesting museum, and you don’t need to be a train spotter to enjoy it! There’s lots for kids too, with demonstrations, a miniature railway you can hop on, and trains you can board and have a nosy inside.

On one of the main platform areas you can stop for a cuppa and a cake. When I visited, it was cute to see lots of OAPs enjoying the café there… no doubt the locomotives brought back a few memories from their pasts.

National Railway Museum Ticket Price: Free but a donation of £3 per person is suggested. You’ll need to pay extra for a few of the attractions like the miniature railway.

Enjoy Some Tasty Street Food At Spark

If you’ve been to places like Pop or Dinerama in London, then consider Spark the York equivalent. Housed inside several conjoined shopping containers, there are several great places to grab a bite to eat here, and the vibe is very cool too.

Along with food vendors, there are some creatives working in the space at Spark too, including card shops, an interior design store and even a hair salon!

Soak Up York’s Sweet History

Along with Vikings, romans and more, York has a very sugary history too – yep, Rowntree’s and Terry’s were both founded in York.

Chocolate has been made in the city for a very long time, so if you fancy learning a bit more (and enjoying some samples too) York’s Chocolate Story is a good place to visit. If you’re strapped for time, there’s a shop there too, so you can stock up on sweet treats regardless!

When Is The Best Time To Visit York?

England is a country obsessed with weather. Don’t know what to say? Comment on the weather! We talk about it a lot, but contrary to what you may have heard, we don’t have awful weather in England. It’s just a little unpredictable and varies from region to region.

You can expect average lows of around 5 °C in York in January / February, and highs around 25°C in July / August.

If you’re wondering when is the best time to visit York, I’d suggest planning a trip in May or June. The weather tends to be warm and sunny, rain is at a minimum and it’s out of peak season, so you shouldn’t be battling any big crowds either. The longest day is around 20th June every year, so it’s a time you can enjoy maximum daylight hours exploring!

I’ve never been a fan of November in York – it gets pretty bleak! It’s the wettest month of the year, and while December can be pretty cold, there’s a Christmas magic around the country which always puts a smile on my face!

New York is a city that's always celebrating something, and summer is one of the best times to visit. Outdoor concert season is in full swing. Free movies and theatrical performances fill the city's parks, street vendors are everywhere, and street fairs abound. But subway platforms can get steamy, lines can get long, and temperatures can soar among the city's high-rises. If this sounds like misery, visit between Thanksgiving and the New Year, when temperatures are cooler and department store windows are decked out for the holidays. During this time, Manhattan's three major outdoor ice rinks are open, a giant Christmas tree marks Rockefeller Center, and holiday light shows are more elaborate than anything you could ever imagine.

Things to Know

New York is a city made up of five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Most tourist attractions are in Manhattan, with a few scattered across Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx.

Driving in Manhattan is unnecessary. The city has an extensive public transit system, making it easy to get just about anywhere by subway, bus, cab, and foot. Uber and Lyft are plentiful, while parking can be both a miserable and expensive experience. Meanwhile, the subway is open 24/7.

New York is a city that moves fast. Step aside to look at your phone, and remember to stand on the right side of the escalator so hurried commuters can walk on the left.

Times Square characters can be pushy. Tipping is at your discretion.

How to Get Around

Trains: The New York City subway is one of the most extensive public transit systems in the world. It connects Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx, and runs on Staten Island. Each ride costs $2.75. A seven-day pass is available for $33 and covers both trains and buses.

Buses: A network of buses offers easy access to the rare spots not served by nearby train stations and to New York's LaGuardia Airport. Individual bus rides cost $2.75. Seven-day transit passes cost $33 and cover trains and buses. While buses can be convenient, traffic can sometimes make them easy to outwalk.

Ferries: One of the best ways to hop among New York's boroughs in good weather is a ferry. Ferries connect Queens, the western coast of Brooklyn, the eastern side of Manhattan, and Staten Island. Rides are $2.75 each. Subway and bus passes aren't accepted on New York ferries. The Staten Island Ferry is free.

Taxis: Cabs are all over Manhattan, but a little harder to find in parts of Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. Green cabs offer service in northern Manhattan and the outer boroughs. To hail a cab, look for one that has its light on and raise your arm. All New York cabs are metered and required to accept credit cards.

Rideshare: Uber and Lyft are all over New York and offer similar pricing. Rideshare can be the best way to travel in parts of Brooklyn and Queens.

If money is no object and you can afford to check into the best New York City hotels — or always dreamt of sleeping in a castle — this is the property for you. It was built to resemble a French château and sits across the street from the southern edge of Central Park. A favorite of filmmakers, The Plaza is where Robert Redford and Barbra Streisand filmed "The Way We Were" and where Macaulay Culkin spent Christmas in "Home Alone 2." The Plaza underwent a $450 million restoration in 2008 and is known for its afternoon tea service.

After being closed for 14 months during the COVID-19 pandemic, The Peninsula New York reopened in summer 2021 and welcomed guests back to this iconic address on Fifth Avenue, near high-end stores and popular attractions such as Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall. The hotel's spa is one of the largest in the city, spanning three floors, and the top-floor indoor pool offers sweeping views of the skyline.

Times square.

Times Square is the pulsing heart of the city that never sleeps, but it isn't actually a square. In fact, it looks more like a bow tie and covers an area from West 42nd to West 47th Streets along Broadway and Seventh Avenues. This commercial intersection is where the city's world-famous New Year's Eve celebration is held. Theater District

Central Park : You could easily spend all day at this park. It's home to numerous movie filming locations like Wollman Rink, known for most ice-skating scenes in New York City and Bethesda Terrace, that gorgeous arched terrace with the fountain outside of it with the angel on top, popular with romcoms. Just walk around the park and you'll get a sense of deja vu. The park is also home to the Central Park Zoo and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

What Ariana Madix Can’t Live Without

If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what everyday stuff famous people add to their carts — like  hair spray  or an  electric toothbrush . We asked Vanderpump Rules cast member Ariana Madix — who recently partnered with BIC — about her favorite loungewear, dog leash, and snail-mucin serum.

When I was on Dancing With the Stars , my feet were just in the worst condition. The costume department gifted me these Oofos recovery slides, and at one point, they were the only shoes I could actually walk in because my feet were so beat-up. They feel amazing. They’re my favorite and the only slides I have.

Being here in NYC the last few months has been a big weather change, especially it being wintertime. When I was putting on stage makeup almost every day, my skin was definitely going through a bit of a rough time. Something that keeps the moisture in was so necessary because I was washing my face, washing makeup off, and inside, with the heater on, everything was drying; it was a good time.

I stole this from my boyfriend. He uses both the CosRX essence and moisturizer , so when I would visit and stay over at his place, I would use it sometimes, and then I became addicted to it. So, I have to give him credit because I’ve been stealing it from him and I love it. It feels really nice. I feel like sometimes I moisturize and then ten minutes later I don’t feel moisturized anymore. This stuff really sinks into my skin and keeps me moisturized.

When I was rehearsing every day for Chicago and Dancing With the Stars , I felt like I needed cute sets that I could either throw on over my rehearsal clothes or just have something that I can go to a store in without feeling funny or gross. This is the softest, cutest set . You can put them on with Jordans and still feel like you’re in a cute outfit, as opposed to my sweaty, crummy gym clothes. They’re like the cute version of that.

When we’re in Los Angeles, my dog , Mya, typically goes outside in the yard. After moving to New York for four months, she had to become accustomed to going to the bathroom on walks; when I would take her on walks in L.A., she would just explore and wait to go potty when we got home. In New York, it’s obviously a much different situation, so she needed to have a nice leash that looks stylish as she walks down the street. We take her to Central Park to go to the bathroom.

My best friend, Logan, and I are obsessed with candles , and during peak COVID times when malls and stores were closed, we missed going to shops and just smelling candles. This D.S. & Durga Breakfast candle is one of our absolute favorite scents, and I always have it at home.

It smells like if you were to elevate one of those warm scents that tend to come out in the fall; it has some almond-butter notes in there and a fireplace smell that feels cozy but elevated and not too sugary sweet. It’s giving breakfast.

Baublebar gave me this necklace when my dog Charlotte passed away in 2022. It has her name on it and I absolutely love it for that reason. Charlotte was a dog like no other. Often imitated, never duplicated, she was truly one of a kind. Just a little Pokémon creature. I like to wear the necklace and rep Charlotte like that.

I’ve been addicted to this lip mask for years. I use it as daily lip balm and oftentimes have two or three of the pots in my various purses or next to my bed; I’m just constantly going for it.

I like that it’s not sticky and there’s no color to it. It honestly just feels really nice. I can put it on under lip liner or lipstick and it will keep everything from drying out. I have some wrinkles in my actual lips and this keeps everything smoother and more moisturized. I also use it before I go to bed like you’re supposed to, so when I wake up in the morning, I don’t look crusty.

How LaGuardia became cool

The once loathed new york city airport went from punchline to a flier favorite.

NEW YORK — From an arriving plane, taxiing up to a gate in the new Terminal B at New York’s LaGuardia Airport is like approaching a steel-and-glass fortress. Flat gray walls at ground level immediately meet the eye. The building’s notable touches — its floor-to-ceiling windows, pedestrian bridges and other architectural flourishes — all rise above you.

After that fortress-like approach, deplaning into the building is a pleasant departure from its dreary reputation . The concourse is light and airy with a rising roofline that visually guides travelers to the bridge to the terminal and the city beyond.

Concessions, including local favorites like Irving Farm coffee roasters and national chains like Wendy’s, beckon with dining options. Forget a book? Grab one at beloved New York bookstore Strand . Need a gift for the kids? The Lego store has you covered.

Or just want to relax away from the traveling masses? Credit card provider Chase recently opened a gleaming new lounge, joining ones managed by Air Canada, American Airlines, United Airlines and American Express.

This isn’t the LaGuardia of “ airport sushi ” infamy anymore.

The airport has come a long way since Vice President Joe Biden described it as “third world” in 2014. Gone is the 1960s-era Central Terminal Building with its leaky roofs , lack of food options and nowhere to sit. Terminal B replaced it in 2020. And Terminal C, which is still under construction, will replace Terminals C and D when it is completed later this year.

“This is gorgeous,” one female traveler stopped to tell Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Executive Director Rick Cotton, the man who oversaw the transformation of LaGuardia, as he watched a water feature falling from the ceiling in the middle of Terminal B.

“I feel like I’m not at home,” she added before disappearing to catch a flight as “Empire State of Mind” played in the background.

Reactions like these are common, Cotton said on a walk through Terminal B last month. The Port Authority, which operates LaGuardia, receives similar feedback from travelers.

“This is civic architecture,” he said while looking out one of those walls of glass you can see from taxiing planes. “It should be inspiring and appealing.”

And an inspiring and appealing edifice is what the Port Authority and its private partners have achieved: a pleasant, art-filled, Instagrammable place — and this time in a good way.

From last to first place

There are many problems with LaGuardia. For one, in a world of large, mega-airports like Dallas-Fort Worth, it’s minuscule. The airport, with just 680 acres, is smaller than Central Park.

On top of that, LaGuardia was built without a master plan, Cotton said. The original terminal — Terminal A, later known as the Marine Air Terminal — opened in 1940 and Terminal B was completed in 1964. Later came Terminals C and D in the 1980s and 1990s.

“It was ‘we’ll just build this one new terminal building,’ and it was how the Port Authority had approached the airport as a whole … No plan. Piecemeal,” Cotton said.

Then came former New York governor Andrew M. Cuomo.

Cuomo, in January 2015, announced an “aggressive infrastructure redesign” of New York’s John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia airports after years of inaction. Cotton noted that, among other reasons, rebuilding the World Trade Center after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks took “an enormous amount of the resources of the agency.”

By summer 2015, New York State had selected private partners to redevelop Terminals B, C and D at LaGuardia, including LaGuardia Gateway Partners for Terminal B and Delta Air Lines for Terminal C. Construction began on Terminal B in 2016 and Terminal C a year later.

“There was a real continuity of top leadership support,” Cotton said. He cited Cuomo and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul for their support.

“You need that in terms of committing the funding, and you need that in terms of a thousand different problems that come into play,” Cotton added, who was named Port Authority executive director in 2017.

What the Port Authority and its private partners did was no small feat. “You have a fully operational airport with passengers and you’re fully reconstructing that facility,” said TJ Schulz, president of the trade group Airports Consultants Council.

He likened the reconstruction of LaGuardia to “changing a tire on a car that’s moving on the interstate.”

It paid off: the trade group Airports Council International World recently named LaGuardia as having the best customer experience for airports its size in North America, which is a dramatic turnaround from its historical last or near-last place standing. Skytrax , the publisher of global airline and airport quality rankings, lists LaGuardia Terminal B as one of just three facilities in North America with the top five-star rating. LaGuardia Airport as a whole is rated four stars.

A work in progress

The design of the new Terminal B, which was completed in 2022, aims to reduce stress and create a “calm, frictionless experience” for travelers, as LaGuardia Gateway Partners CEO Suzette Noble put it.

“Once you’re through security, this great window looks out on the airfield. You can see the two bridges, [and] you can see the airplanes,” said Peter Ruggiero, a design principal at architecture firm HOK that designed Terminal B, in a 2020 talk. “You know where you’re going; you have a sense of those distances.”

When asked about all of the vertical movements travelers must make — at least three from curb to gate — Noble said it was solely the result of the terminal site’s small size. It’s not something LaGuardia Gateway Partners has, at least not publicly, received many complaints about. She said complaints are typically about WiFi and flight delays.

In addition to improving the inside, the Port Authority, along with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and city officials, is working to improve the journey to LaGuardia with bus upgrades. A new direct shuttle service is planned from the end of a nearby subway line. A controversial AirTrain to the subway, like the one at JFK, was canceled in early 2023 due to spiraling costs.

The new Terminal C, which is home to Delta Air Lines, is still under construction with two-and-a-half of the four new concourses open. The rest is expected to open this summer.

Construction on the building is still very obvious. Look out the panoramic windows after security, and you see half of the former Terminal D amid arriving and departing planes with an old Delta sign — “NEW YORK’S #1 AIRLINE” — still hanging above the former curbside drop-off area.

Travelers, though, already like what they see.

Like Terminal B, Terminal C goes up where most airport spaces go out. There’s no great hall welcoming travelers when they enter from departures; instead ticketing is on one level and security a level above connected by two three-story atriums filled with public art. A massive, digital screen spanning the space above the security queues shows changing images that reflect the destination of a soon-to-depart flight.

“New York City is such a vertical city,” said Jay Liese, the project principal on Terminal C at architecture firm Corgan. “In some ways we see the three-level [terminal] as being a little bit of a metaphor for New York.”

One thing Corgan and architectural partner Gensler did after security was create soaring atriums at the entrance to the concourses in Terminal C. That makes the place where travelers wait to board their flights feel much larger, and significantly increases the space for restaurants , restrooms and kid play areas.

The concourse atriums are the concessions space in Terminal C, a more dispersed approach than the central hub in Terminal B.

“It becomes a more organic part of the customer’s journey to their gate,” Liese said of the decision to spread out amenities across the terminal.

You can eat a sandwich or pizza at Sunday Supper looking out a floor-to-ceiling window on the ramp where planes are coming and going, or down on the travelers milling about as they wait for their flights. From there, it’s a quick escalator ride down to the concourse floor and walk to the gate for your flight out.

“It has exceeded, frankly, my highest hopes and expectations,” Cotton said of the new LaGuardia while sitting in Terminal B. “The combination of the architecture — light and airy, and you compare that to the old, dark, undersized LaGuardia. [It’s] night and day.”

Commuting to, from and around the “city so nice that they named it twice” can be a pain. Rush hour traffic, random street closures and mass transit delays are all daily grind nuisances.

But the harrowing hassle of hustling and busting isn’t limited to the city’s limits.  

“Workers in New York State [have] the longest commute times,” stated an April 2024 report from the US Department of Energy. 

The DOE, which manages the nation’s nuclear infrastructure and administers the country’s energy policy, used 2022 data on the average 9-to-5er’s one-way travel time to work to compile a list of the top 10 worst states for commuting. 

Researchers determined that most New Yorkers spend approximately 33.2 minutes during their trek to the office. 

And while riding in a train, bus or car for just over a half hour might not sound so terrible, the trip has yet earned the Empire State the No. 1 spot on the longest commute roster. 

Straphangers in Maryland, New Jersey and the District of Columbia have it almost as bad. 

The findings revealed that folks in each province, too, lose a little more than 30 minutes of their lives high-tailing it to their cubicles Monday through Friday. 

DOE analysts attributed the lengthy jaunts around the densely populated states to “traffic and urban sprawl.”

The experts also noted that the average one-way commute time across the US is approximately 27 minutes. 

But staffers in the Midwest have it the best. 

“South Dakota and North Dakota had average commute times of less than 18 minutes,” read the report. 

Workers in similarly provincial regions such as Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska and Montana also enjoy quickie shuffles just under the 20-minute mark.

However, some business bigwigs don’t mind a long haul. 

NYC “super commuter” Susan Miller gladly hops on a plane every week to work as a full-time professor at the University of Michigan.

And hairdresser Kaitlin Jay, 30, told The Post she’s perfectly content spending nearly six hours commuting door-to-door from her home in Charlotte, North Carolina to work at an Upper West Side salon on a biweekly basis. 

“I love what I do in New York and I love life in Charlotte,” she said. “I get the best of both worlds.”

Are you still a little giddy from the magical moments of totality during Monday’s solar eclipse? Or did clouds swoop in to block your view? Maybe you just couldn’t make it to the path of totality this time. No matter what, the question now is “ Where and when will it happen again?”

“People who have never seen it before, the first words out of their mouth after the totality ends is ‘I’ve got to see another one, this is incredible, this is unbelievable.’ That is when you become addicted to these things and end up traveling no matter where the next one is,” said Joseph Rao, an eclipse chaser and guest lecturer at the Hayden Planetarium.

So, if like Mr. Rao, you’ve developed a raging case of umbraphilia — the love of eclipses — you’ll have three chances over the next four years to see the moon blot out the sun. The first, on Aug. 12, 2026, will start above Greenland, then strafe the west coast of Iceland and move along the Atlantic Ocean and over Spain. Almost a year later, on Aug. 2, 2027, another will skirt the Mediterranean coast of North Africa then cross Egypt and part of the Arabian Peninsula. The third, on July 22, 2028, will cut across Australia and the southern tip of New Zealand.

Future Eclipses

Eclipse chasers will have several more chances this decade to view a total solar eclipse .

Last week, as Victoria Sahami , the owner of Sirius Travel , was preparing to guide a group of tourists in Mazatlán, Mexico, for Monday’s big event, she was also planning for these other upcoming eclipses. Ms. Sahami joined the ranks of the eclipse-obsessed when she witnessed one in Venezuela in the 1990s. “Like many people, I was hooked. There was no going back,” she said.

Total solar eclipses happen fairly regularly — about every one to two years — in locations scattered around the world. “That’s the great thing about them: You wind up in places that you don’t normally go,” Ms. Sahami said.

A major spoiler is weather, which will be a big variable in the 2026 eclipse — one Greenland, Iceland and Spain will see.

“Iceland normally has a lot of cloud during that time of year,” said Paul Maley , who runs Ring of Fire Expeditions . “The data shows Spain to have the higher good-weather prospects of all three. However, the sun is low in the sky and the eclipse ends as the sun hits the horizon at sunset.”

Because of Iceland’s mercurial meteorology, Ring of Fire Expeditions is going all in on Spain, with a 10-day excursion on the mainland. Sirius Travel is offering not only a five-day trip to Majorca but also an eight-day tour around Iceland. It will be based in Reykjavik, and the itinerary will remain flexible on the day of the eclipse so the tour can easily pivot toward the location with the least cloud cover. Ms. Sahami recommends the trip for those who already have a few eclipses under their belt and would be happy just to take in the sights of Iceland if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

The 2027 eclipse, on the other hand, promises to be truly stellar: Luxor, Egypt — the site of numerous ancient temples as well as the Valleys of the Kings and Queens — sits right in the middle of the path of totality and will be bathed in darkness for a full 6 minutes 23 seconds. Weather-wise, it is what Ms. Sahami called “a slam dunk.” “You know you’re going to see it. You know that you’re not going to get any clouds,” she said.

But for all its potential, those considering Egypt should be aware that the State Department has a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” warning for the country because of the risk of terrorism.

The 2028 eclipse will darken the skies over Sydney, Australia, for 3 minutes 49 seconds. It will be the first time the city has experienced a total solar eclipse since 1857. Ms. Sahami has her eyes on a trip based out of there, while Mr. Maley has chartered a cruise ship off the northwest coast of Australia. It will be winter there, he said, but that isn’t likely to mean bad eclipse-viewing weather.

If you want to see any (or all) of these eclipses, you should get started on planning and booking now, particularly if you want to sign up for a trip organized by a tour company. One of Sirius Travel’s excursions to Luxor is already full.

Scrutinize refund policies and look into insuring your trip. Several companies will fully refund your deposit if you cancel a year in advance. A lot can happen, Ms. Sahami said, “but if you think you’re going to go, why not?”

Age: New, but I’ll be older, hopefully.

When? When I die.

Eh? It’ll become clear. Anyway, I’m going on holiday.

Lovely. Club 18-30 , is it? Actually, Club 18-30 no longer exists . In any case, I’m thinking more like 90-120, if you see what I mean.

Not really. Are you going bar-hopping in Magaluf ? Certainly not.

Is it a trip to Vegas? World capital of debauchery. What happens there stays there, you know. No!

Hedonism on Ibiza? No, it’s 2024, not the 1990s! Debauchery is over, darling.

Oh. So where are you going? On a longevity vacation.

A long holiday? No, a longevity vacation.

Right. What’s that? Part of a growing trend for wellness tourism.

Ah, the W-word, that’s what this is about. What does one do on a longevity vacation? Well, I’m going to the Four Seasons Resort Maui in Hawaii where I’ll be having the longevity protocol.

Which is? “A multi-faceted approach that optimises your body’s natural healing mechanisms and balance.” It comprises “cutting-edge therapies such as ozone, stem cells, exosomes and NAD+”.

I don’t know what all of that is, but it sounds cool . Put me down for one – you’ve got yourself a travel companion ! Great! Just one thing: it costs £35,351.

Oh. You could just have a bit of ozone therapy , where they take out some of your blood, dissolve ozone in it, then put it back.

How much? It’s £964. Or there is the cranial release technique , whereby a chiropractor “works to restore proper function to the nervous system and proper balance to body structure”, for only £225. But this is just one very high-end resort; wellness tourism is spreading all over the world. The Global Wellness Institute expects the market to top $1tn (£800bn) this year.

Anything for the less rich? You can get a biological age test for a couple of hundred quid.

Or I could just look in my passport. Biological age, not chronological. It’s about the rate you are ageing physically.

I’m feeling quite old. But I think that’s because, everywhere I look, people are obsess ed with longevity. What do doctors say? “There isn’t a single proven treatment that would prolong the life of someone who’s already healthy,” Dr Mark Loafman, a family doctor in Chicago, told the Wall Street Journal . “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”

Do say: “On second thoughts, I’m just going to eat healthily, run on the beach and swim in the sea.”

Don’t say: “Party like it’s 1999!”
