While much of them ring true for the entire state, if you’re heading to Fort Myers, you’ll also be able to accent these clichés with collecting sand dollars, fantastic birdwatching, and breathtaking sunsets. Isn’t it about time you made those daydreams come true?

10 Best Things to Do in Fort Myers

If you’re looking for a quiet, classy vacation spot, then Fort Myers is for you. In Fort Myers, the craziness that you’d come across in Fort Lauderdale and Miami is replaced by a classy “old Florida” feeling with family-friendly beaches.

The natural areas and state parks are second to none. There are dozens of nature and wildlife preserves sprinkled throughout the area. Most of the coastline is preserved land. Therefore, many beachgoers flock to Fort Myers Beach or one of the outlying islands.

Best Place to Charter a Boat :  Sailo makes boat rentals easy, personal, and accessible for everyone .

The charming downtown and numerous attractions make it the perfect vacation destination. Below are the 10 best things to do in Fort Myers, Florida.

1. Relax on the Beach

fort myers fl travel guide

The laidback beaches of Fort Myers are some of the most stunning in the world. When you include nearby Sanibel Island, there are over 50 miles of beaches and a wide array of water sports and activities—there’s something for everyone. The best place to start your trip is at Bowman’s Beach on Sanibel Island.

2. Enjoy a Sunset on the Gulf

fort myers fl travel guide

Trust us, if you haven’t seen the big orange ball sink into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, then you’re missing out. The dramatic colors in the sky bouncing off the clouds and water will make you feel like you’re having some sort of spiritual experience, guaranteed.

There is an endless number of beaches that face west, so grab a bottle of wine and a blanket and head out. One of our favorites is Turner Beach on Captiva Island . Afterward, head over to Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille where you’ll dine on fresh seafood in a fun atmosphere!

3. Get Wild With Nature

There are very few places in the US where nature and a large metropolitan area cohabitate so harmoniously. From just about anywhere along the coast you’ll have the opportunity to admire birds flocking across the sea and dolphins jumping in the water.

If you’d like to increase the odds a bit, book a wildlife tour with a reputable operator. We suggest Sunset and Dolphin Cruise around Fort Myers Beach or a Guided Kayak Tour-Mangrove Estuary —it’s guaranteed to supply you with the wildlife adventure of a lifetime. Get ready to spot manatees, bottle-nosed dolphins, and exotic birds, and go shelling.

fort myers fl travel guide

Don’t forget to visit the J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge where you can go on a “safari.” The most common sightings include shorebirds and waterbirds, alligators, raccoons, marsh rabbits, and even the occasional bobcat. The refuge is closed on Fridays so plan accordingly.

4. Get Your Shell On

As you tour the soft sandy beaches you’ll most likely feel like you’re walking on eggshells. Don’t be nervous. That crunching sound is seashells. Shell lovers pilgrimage to Sanibel Island’s Gulf Coast because it’s considered the best shelling spot in North America.

Shelling has become so popular here that the “Sanibel Stoop” is the latest dance move. OK, maybe not. However, it is the bent-at-the-waist stance that most shellers use to retrieve a seashell. Want to find the best shells? Then you better learn from a professional on a Shelling Tour .

fort myers fl travel guide

If you become obsessed with the “Sanibel Stoop,” then you may be interested in visiting the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum where you can learn everything you’ve ever wanted to know about the shells you’ve been collecting on the beach. Please keep in mind that it’s illegal to take live shells so be careful.

5. Shut Up and Fish

The best time to go offshore fishing down here is from March through June when the tarpon is migrating. Tarpon may be sighted from the shoreline near Boca Grande Pass, but the odds of catching one of them from the sand is pretty slim.

Instead, you may want to head out with Beeline Fishing Charters where you’ll have the chance for anything from sharks to snappers.

fort myers fl travel guide

Inshore fishing is pretty much great all year round. Popular species include redfish, catch snook, spotted seatrout, jack crevalle, sheepshead, mangrove snapper, and various other species. The best locations for inshore fishing are usually around mangrove-lined shorelines, open flats, bridges, beaches, docks, piers, and the many passes and inlets leading to the Gulf of Mexico.

6. Get Up Close and Personal with Nature

The West Coast may have the Pacific coast trail but down here in Florida , they have the Great Calusa Blueway. This paddling trail is about 190 miles long. The marked route guides kayaks and canoes from Bonita Springs up to the Ca loosahatchee River. Along the way, you’ll pass all kinds of flora and fauna, including manatees.

fort myers fl travel guide

The highlight of your trip will probably be visiting the Mound Key Archaeological State Park. This island is only accessible by kayak or private boat. This site was once the capital city of the Calusa Indian tribe, the first Jesuit mission in the New World, the site of a Spanish Fort, and the first Jesuit mission in the New World.

What? You didn’t bring a kayak with you on the plane? No problem. Connect with Estero River Outfitter to rent a SUP, kayak, or canoe. There are dozens of great day trip routes. Head over to the Great Calusa Blueway website to download free maps.

7. Tour Historic Homes

Did you know that the Edison & Ford Winter Estates are among the 10 most visited historic homes in the US? Highlights of the tour include demonstrations using the equipment in Edison’s research lab, behind-the-scenes views of the estate buildings, and horticultural tours of the gardens.

Two of the most creative innovators in American history—Henry Ford and Thomas Edison—spent their winters in Fort Myers. They built two magnificent homes on a premier piece of real estate along the Caloosahatchee River.

The Edison and Ford Winter Estates contain a historical museum and a 21-acre botanical garden on the adjacent sites of the winter homes. Lovers of history will enjoy the VIP Private Historic and Nature Tour of Fort Myers .

8. Start and Finish Your Day in Style

Start your day at a coffee roastery where you’ll be treated to beans that were properly roasted. Our top choices are The Grind and Bennet’s Fresh Roast . Did I mention that Bennet’s also sells hand-cut from scratch donuts? Or, celebrate your adventurous day at a microbrewery over a pint. We recommend “ No.3 Craft Brews & Beer Bar .”

fort myers fl travel guide

9. Escape to the Islands

If the Fort Myers area seems a bit too busy, try heading out to the islands to escape it all. On Cabbage Key, Gasparilla, or North Captiva you’ll probably end up seeing more golf carts than cars. It’s all about enjoying life on these islands.

fort myers fl travel guide

Budget Tip: Charter a boat with Sailo , their website makes it easy to organize a boat getaway adventure for yourself or a group of friends.

Adventurous travelers will head to Cayo Costa and the Cayo Costa State Park where you can rent one of the many small rustic wooden cabins. The cozy cabins are only steps from one of the most spectacular beaches in the US and are surrounded by native vegetation. Hopefully, you’re not afraid of snakes.

10. The Umpire Strikes Back

Consider yourself very lucky if you make it to Fort Myers during the springtime. The Minnesota Twins play in Hammond Stadium at Lee County Sports Complex and the Boston Red Sox play at JetBlue Park, just a few miles away.

fort myers fl travel guide

Baseball fans will enjoy a visit to Terry Park Ball Field. Hall of Famers Jimmy Foxx, Bob Feller, Tris Speaker, Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, and Roberto Clemente are just a few of the great players that have graced the Terry Park Field. Make sure to check their events calendar to see who’s in the lineup.

3 thoughts on “ 10 best things to do in fort myers florida – a first timer’s guide ”.

That’s good to know that the best fishing season in Fort Myers Beach is March through June. My husband has been trying to plan a fishing trip with his buddies to the Gulf of Mexico. They’ll probably charter a boat when they get there and do some fishing out on the ocean as well as in the mangroves.

Sounds dreamy. We will have to make our way there from Tallahassee next school break!

Yes, it’s definitely worth it!

13 Best Things To Do in Fort Myers

Updated March 7, 2023

Surrounded by both salt and freshwater, Fort Myers' natural areas are the prime reason for visiting. Numerous preserves in the area will help you become one with nature, including the popular  J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge , which is

Fort Myers River District Fort Myers River District free

Considered Fort Myers' main downtown area, the River District is filled with things to do, see and – of course – eat. Take a stroll through the brick-paved streets to admire the early 1900s-era buildings, including the Sidney & Berne Davis Arts Center , which was constructed in 1933 using Florida Keys limestone. City hall, the county courthouse, several top attractions (like the Edison and Ford Winter Estates ) and boutiques are located in this neighborhood, and you'll also have a number of restaurants and bars to choose from. When hunger strikes, sit down for a bite to eat at Ford's Garage , a traveler favorite named after Henry Ford and known for its mouthwatering burgers and classic car-themed decor. Conveniently, popular hotels – like the Hotel Indigo Ft. Myers Downtown River District – are located in this neighborhood as well.

Recent travelers enjoyed exploring the Fort Myers River District, praising its plethora of eateries and nicely restored historic buildings. For an extra special evening, many recommend heading downtown on the first Friday of every month for Art Walk, where you will find vendors selling jewelry, clothes and paintings. Stores and museums in the River District typically stay open late on these nights. If you're more musically inclined, time your visit with Music Walk, which takes place every third Friday of the month. The Music Walk features performers who play live music for crowds in the streets, ranging from jazz to rock-and-roll.

Edison and Ford Winter Estates Edison and Ford Winter Estates

The Edison and Ford Winter Estates are a home base for history buffs who visit the area. The two American innovators – Thomas Edison, the inventor of the electric light bulb and the phonograph, and Henry Ford, the pioneer of the automobile – were good friends who built their winter homes next to each other about a mile south of downtown Fort Myers. Dating back to the early 1900s, the historic estates are now on display for visitors. Along with the grand homes, the grounds also include a botanical garden (with trees planted by Edison himself), a research laboratory and a museum with hundreds of artifacts and inventions from the entrepreneurs.

The estates are open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Guided and self-guided tours are available; the cost of admission depends on the type of tour you sign up for. Self-guided tour prices range from $15 to $25, depending on age. Recent visitors found the price of admission a bit high, but they reported it was worth it for those who are interested in the history of either inventor. For more information on prices and tour times, visit the organization's website .

Fort Myers Beach Fort Myers Beach free

Fort Myers Beach is big draw for travelers visiting the area. Located on Estero Island, it is the closest – and most popular – beach spot to downtown Fort Myers, though it is a roughly 20-mile drive south. In peak traffic, it can take as long as an hour to get there. Still, travelers who head to the shoreline can expect wide swaths of clean, white sand as fine as powdered sugar, which is well worth the journey for many.

Fort Myers Beach is an excellent spot for swimming and sunbathing, as well as water sports like kayaking and parasailing. Rental shops for water sports equipment are positioned along the beachfront, and travelers can also reserve equipment ahead of time online through a company like Holiday Water Sports. Fishing enthusiasts can reel in their catches on the Fort Myers Beach Pier, which has an on-site bait shack and plenty of space to take a stroll and enjoy the views. Adjacent to the beach and pier, you'll find Times Square, a shopping and dining hot spot where you can grab a drink or enjoy live music.

Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve free

Set on 3,500 acres of wetlands, Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve is home to an array of plant and animal life. Here, visitors can spot turtles, birds, alligators, otters and more in the marsh habitat as they walk along the lush boardwalk trail. Before or after hiking, pop into the Interpretive Center to view interactive exhibits and learn more about the slough (pronounced "sloo"), or peruse souvenirs in the on-site gift shop.

Recent visitors said this quiet, peaceful oasis is worth a visit to reset the mind and body. Most reported seeing herons, alligators and other creatures at all times of year, but some say the best time to view the park's wildlife is during the wet season from June to September – especially in the early morning, when crowds are limited. Travelers also recommend bringing binoculars to spot animals at a distance from the trail, and others note that bug spray is a must in the summer months.

fort myers fl travel guide

Manatee Park Manatee Park

It's best to stop by Manatee Park, a refuge for Florida manatees, during the winter season (between December and February). During the colder months, the animals flock to warm pockets of water to escape chilly temperatures. Since the park is directly on the warm water discharge canal of the Florida Power & Light company, it's a popular spot for these gentle creatures. There are a handful of observation decks to see the animals up close, but you can also hop into a kayak and paddle out to spot them. You probably won't see manatees if you visit in summer, but you can enjoy the park's 16 acres in kayaks or on guided tours. Recent visitors to the park say when it's cool out (and with a little patience) you can see upward of 50 manatees at the park.

General admission to the park is free, but there is a small fee for parking ($5 per day). The park is open from 8 a.m. to sunset daily (including holidays), and kayak rentals are available through Manatee Kayaking Company . After catching a glimpse of the manatees, you can also explore the extensive on-site butterfly garden. Check the Manatee Park  website to learn more and see if manatees are present at the park on any given day.

Spring Training Spring Training

Although the nearest major league baseball teams are in Tampa and Miami, those visiting Fort Myers still see big league action in the form of spring training. Every March, the Boston Red Sox and the Minnesota Twins escape the cold for the warm spring temperatures the city has to offer.

The Red Sox have been making their home at JetBlue Park since 2011, where diehard fans can see a replica of the Green Monster as well as an old school manual scoreboard. Fans who visited recently said the park has earned the nicknamed "Fenway South." The Minnesota Twins have been suiting up to prepare for the season in Fort Myers since 1990. Their stadium, located at CenturyLink Sports Complex, is about 5 miles west of JetBlue Park. When it's not spring training, the complex is also home to the two minor league affiliates of the Twins, the Fort Myers Miracle and the Gulf Coast League Twins, as well as facilities utilized by local collegiate and community teams. Recent visitors to the stadium said they found concessions easy to find and that every seat provides a great view of the action on the field.

Lakes Regional Park Lakes Regional Park free

If you're looking for a mix of fun and relaxation suitable for the whole family, head to Lakes Regional Park. Located about 10 miles south of Downtown Fort Myers, the almost 300-acre park offers a freshwater lake for fishing, multiple playgrounds, campsites, more than 2 miles of walking paths, a small splash pad water park, picnic areas, gardens and bike and boat rentals. Lakes Park also houses the Railroad Museum of Southwest Florida, which offers daily train rides for children.

Recent travelers said the park was a great place to spend a morning or afternoon, emphasizing that it is large, clean and well-maintained. Families with children were especially fond of the train rides and multiple fun spaces to explore. Some also noted spotting alligators and other wildlife, such as fish and rabbits, while there. The park hosts festivals and special events regularly, and there is a weekly farmers market on Wednesday mornings.

J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge

Named after a political cartoonist and conservationist, the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge occupies 8,000 acres of land on Sanibel Island , located southwest of Fort Myer's city center. The refuge, which takes up about half the entire island, was originally meant to conserve the island's significant mangrove forest. Today, it is still home to those mangroves, as well as animals like crocodiles, alligators and countless species of birds. In fact, for herons, cuckoos, ospreys and other birds, the refuge is an important stop along their migratory path. Recent visitors to the park said it's a unique way to see a variety of wildlife.

You'll see the most wildlife if you visit between the months of November and April during low tide. If you visit in the summer be aware of the high humidity and increased amount of bugs – including mosquitos. You can explore the refuge in whatever way suits your tastes: on foot or bike via trails, in a canoe or by car. Parts of the park also allow boating and fishing. The park is open every day except Friday. It also offers a free visitor and education center that's open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. year-round. Park hours vary throughout the year, so check the  website before visiting. Admission is $10 per vehicle or $1 per pedestrian or bicycle.

Future scientists and engineers (and their families) come to the IMAG History & Science Center to explore topics, such as earth and space science, Florida history, technology, marine animals and more through interactive exhibits. The center also offers live animal encounters with its touch tanks and aquarium.

Recent visitors were pleased with the center and its hands-on exhibits, calling IMAG a great indoor activity when the weather won't cooperate. Others felt the admission price was too high given the center's small size. Some reviewers note this activity is best suited for children 12 and younger.

You'll see a wide range of animals native to Florida at the Calusa Nature Center & Planetarium, including bald eagles, alligators, hawks and owls. There are also daily shows and animal demonstrations, as well as touch tanks and fossils that kids will enjoy.

Allot one to two hours to enjoy tours of Calusa's artificial habitats, experience the wetlands or visit the butterfly house. If there's still time left over, take in the attraction's laser and space-related shows. Recent visitors say the planetarium is a highlight, but the rest of the nature center is fun for families with smaller children.

Mound House Mound House

Described by some recent travelers as a hidden gem in the town of Fort Myers Beach, the William H. Case house – also known as the Mound House – is the oldest standing structure on Estero Island. The attraction serves as an archeological dig site and a museum that teaches visitors about the Calusa tribe, the original settlers and inhabitants of Southwest Florida.

Nicknamed "The Shell Indians," the Calusa were known for carving tools and weapons out of seashells roughly 2,000 years ago. Once the tools were no longer usable, members of the tribe would discard them in what became a mound of shells. On top of that ancient shell mound, the Case family built the Mound House in 1906. It has been modernized over time and today reflects what the house might have looked like in the early 1920s, complete with antique furniture and other decor.

Fort Myers Florida Travel Guide

Ft. Myers Visitors Guide

Welcome to downtown fort myers, fl..

A great community to live or vacation in. Over 200 years ago, pirates sailed in and out of the islands along the southwestern gulf shores of Florida: Ft. Myers Beach (Estero and San Carlos Islands), Sanibel and Captiva, and Bonita Beach leaving treasures under the water. There are still many treasures here for you to enjoy and I hope my island tour will help you discover them.

Visitors Guide to Fort Myers Beach

The Ft. Myers Beach area consists of Estero and San Carlos islands. Estero is seven miles of white sandy beaches on the glistening blue-green Gulf of Mexico. The island’s original name was Crescent Beach because of the shape of the perimeter of the island.

In the early 1900s, the Koreshan Unity Society, a religious group, built the first structure on the south end of the island. By the early 1920s, the church fathers sold off all the land keeping one cottage for their use. The Koreshan Historical Society still owns the cottage.

At the turn of the century, the only way to get to Crescent Beach was by boat. eventually, some beautiful stone arches were built on San Carlos Island that led to a single lane wooden bridge. As time passed and residents increased, the arches were replaced with a swing bridge that would open to incoming and outgoing boat traffic. As the boats increased, the swing bridge was replaced with our Sky Bridge giving breathtaking views of the “ World’s Safest Beach .”

About Fort Myers, FL

This beautiful Florida town has been one of the most popular vacation spots in the nation for nearly a century. Thomas Edison and Henry Ford often stayed here during the winter season and is the current spring training camp home of the Boston Red Sox and the Minnesota Twins. Originally built in 1850 as a military fort, this city has come a long way to become the county seat of Lee County and be a thriving source of vacation rentals. Take a look at our Ft. Myers attractions list.

The real lure and romance of the island dates back to the early 1700s when Calico Jack, a dashing pirate whose real name was Capt. Racham and whose nickname came from the colorful clothes he wore, visited the island.

Calico Jack lived in Charlestown, S.C. where most of the single maidens were captivated by his charm. None, however, caught his eye until he met Anne Bonny. Bonny, an Irish lass, moved here with her father a disgraced attorney in Ireland to seek a new life and fortune. Mr. Bonny succeeded in amassing great wealth and wanted only the best for his daughter including potential suitors. Anne, being strong-willed, rejected any of her father’s choices marrying a poor sailor instead.

Anne’s actions caused her father great pain and he refused to give her any of his wealth. When the poor sailor found out, he left her. That is when Calico Jack caught her eye. The two fell hopelessly in love, meeting secretly aboard his ship. Anne cut off her curly locks to stow away on his ship.

They considered their first cruise their honeymoon cruise; only to be attacked by Spanish pirates and then to have their ship damaged by a storm front between Key West and Cuba. They drifted up the Gulf of Mexico into the Estero River and the Bay. The honeymooners came ashore on Estero Island where they lived in a cottage of palm and sticks while the ship’s carpenter restored the vessel. they have been among the first honeymooners to visit our island, but thousands since have come to this tropical paradise.

Fort Myers Tour Begins

The first island you visit approaching Ft. Myers Beach is San Carlos Island. This island is bordered on all sides by Estero Bay abundant in lush tropical vegetation, birds, and sea life. It is home to the area’s Shrimp boat fleet.

San Carlos Island

Many commercial and fun fishing charters leave from this island. The seafood is among the freshest in the world and “pink gold” as the locals call shrimp is abundant as well as other seafood in the local and colorful markets on the island. The Coast Guard calls this island home as well as Ostego Bay Foundation an educational facility that encourages the study and preservation of the local environs. The island has all the prices of housing from elaborate bay and deep water canal homes to canal front mobile homes to low-rise condominiums on the bay and canals. This is a boaters’ paradise.

fort myers fl travel guide

Leaving San Carlos Island , we now approach the Sky Bridge. From the top, you can see the Shrimp boat fleet to the right, while pleasure boats may be stopping for gas or to visit one of the waterfront restaurants. From the top of the bridge, you have a panorama of paradise with perhaps a tall ship sailing into the sunlight. You can see the silhouettes of bayfront and beachfront homes and condos against the glistening water. A palette of pastel buildings catches your eye that house local merchants. A good friend from England told me that when he drove over the bridge for the first time and saw the beauty of the island, he knew he wanted to own a piece of paradise.

Estero Island

Turning right at the foot of the bridge takes you to the north end of the island. The north end is the narrowest part making both the bay and beach visible from the main road. The north end is home to beachfront condos and resorts as well as bayfront homes with deep dockage and easy Gulf access. Sanibel is two miles by sea from this side and can be seen from the tip of Estero Island .

fort myers fl travel guide

We will now circle back heading south on Estero Blvd., the main road. We pass a public beach and park and a commercial area called “Times Square” which is home to T-shirt vendors, beach bars and restaurants.

We pass through a quieter commercial area. Streets jut out to the left with canal front homes and to the right with beach access and beachfront homes. There are some multi-family houses in this area. Pirate Pete’s, named for the island’s founding fathers, is in this part of the island. It’s a very unusual video store where tourists and local color enjoy each others’ company.

Wide stretches of white sandy beaches with colorful condos highlight the center of the island. There are homes on canals and the bay. There are fewer resorts in this area making it a quieter and more residential neighborhood.

Bonita Beach

The south end is our last stop. It is the quietest area having clusters of condominiums and newer homes in a more traditional beach sub-division type of environment. There are quiet canals and even a lagoon home to a myriad of birds and manatees. All have direct access to the Gulf. There is a small shopping center and an executive golf course. The gulf front homes are new, large and airy, and at the island’s end, there are condos on the bay and gulf.

The small bridge that leaves that end of the island takes you to a state park and beach and will lead you to Bonita Beach . Small uninhabited islands in that area of the bay hold ancient Indian mounds and history.

Of course, not everyone has to be on the water. A golf course is always nice. Maybe a home or condo near shopping, near golf and not far from Ft. Myers Beach or Sanibel is what you want. South Ft. Myers will fill the bill.

I hope this short tour has given you a glimpse of where I live and work. Your inquiries about vacation homes, retirement homes, investing, or moving here are all welcome. My staff and I pledge to give you the most professional and courteous service. We want to help make your move here memorable and happy.

Thank you to Orlando City Guide for all their help and expertise.

Nestled inland along the Caloosahatchee River, and separated from Fort Myers Beach by several miles of urban sprawl, the city of Fort Myers is often defined by what it's not: it's not an upscale, arty beach town like Sarasota or Naples, and it's not as urbanely sophisticated as Tampa or St Petersburg. While it isn't a city to base a trip around, it's worth a trip to browse its brick-lined main street and visit Thomas Edison's winter home and laboratory.

2 Days in Fort Myers: Itinerary & Guide to a Fun Florida Weekend

Last Updated: August 4, 2022 //  by  Ashley Smith Leave a Comment

When you want to escape the big crowds and big traffic jams of Florida’s big cities, a relaxing 2 days in Fort Myers is just what the travel agent ordered. This little getaway has all the quintessential Florida adventures, beaches, delicious seafood, and sexy sunsets as the rest of the state, but in a much more manageable capacity. We’ll call it “fun size!”

2 days in Fort Myers, Florida, a fun weekend itinerary: palm trees

Where to stay for 2 days in Fort Myers

Instead of choosing hotels based on budgets like I do in my other Florida guides , this time I’ve chosen my favorites in three of Fort Myers’s most popular areas. Check out these great options for where to stay in Fort Myers .

Where to stay in Fort Myers Beach: Pointe Estero Beach Resort

The Pointe Estero Beach Resort scores well from reviewers and everyone’s favorite part is, no shock here, the beach! This resort is right on the white sands of Fort Myers Beach making it the perfect location.

Choose from one or two-bedroom condos that come with a kitchen, access to the large outdoor pool and barbecue grills, and personal patios. Check out Pointe Estero Beach Resort here .

2 days in Fort Myers, Florida, a fun weekend itinerary: canals at the manatee park

Where to stay on Sanibel Island: Island Inn

Sanibel Island’s Island Inn is another reviewer favorite. Unlike many of the other options in Fort Myers, the Island Inn comes with free WiFi, free parking, self-serve laundry, and daily housekeeping. These rooms are nice and the property is located on its own private beach.

They’ve got a library, a fireplace in the lobby (you never know, you might need that), and they even come in cottages! Check out Island Inn here .

2 days in Fort Myers, Florida, a fun weekend itinerary: Sanibel Island beach

How to get to Fort Myers

Fort Myers, like most of the popular vacation destinations in Florida, is pretty damn easy to get to. You can access it by major highways and airports and it’s easy to get around in as well.

2 days in Fort Myers: Arriving by air

So what airport do you fly into if you’re visiting Fort Myers? You’ll want to look out for Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW)—the closest major airport to Fort Myers.

RSW is served by the following airlines:

  • American Airlines
  • Spirit < Do yourself a favor and never fly Spirit Airlines
  • Sun Country

However, since Fort Myers is just one hour away from Sarasota, you could always fly into SRQ as well if you find a great deal. That being said, Tampa International Airport (TPA) is just another hour past Sarasota. So if you’ve got more than one Florida destination on your itinerary your airport options just opened WIDE up! Check out all your flight options here.

2 days in Fort Myers, Florida, a fun weekend itinerary: palm trees on mcgregor blvd

Exploring Fort Myers by land

Getting to and from Fort Myers from other Florida destinations is a super easy and smooth (though visually boring) ride. As mentioned, Fort Myers is just a two-hour drive south of Tampa and an hour south of Sarasota. Besides those two, a weekend in Fort Myers also makes a great trip from:

  • Miami: 2.5 hours
  • Ft. Lauderdale: 2 hours
  • Naples: 45 – 60 minutes
  • West Palm Beach : 2.5 hours
  • Orlando : 3 hours
  • You get my drift. It’s accessible.

If you’ve got more time to spend on the Gulf Coast, check out my guide to spending 3 days in Sarasota , just an hour north with tons to do!

Getting around within Fort Myers, you’ll definitely want a vehicle of your own. The things to do in Fort Myers that I’ve listed in this post are pretty spread out , as is much of the area in general. This isn’t the best place to rely on public transportation and/or ride shares.

The Fort Myers airport is served by all the major rental car brands so you shouldn’t have a problem snagging a car for the weekend.

  • And Thrifty

Check out the best deals on rental cars in Ft. Myers here. And if your Florida travels take you to Orlando, be sure to pick up a free Visitor Toll Pass (all the details in that link).

2 days in Fort Myers, Florida, a fun weekend itinerary: palm trees at Edison and Ford estate

What is there to do in Fort Myers?

Fort Myers, though seemingly isolated while you’re driving there, is actually a popular Florida travel destination. There’s a lot to do here in terms of historical sites, natural areas and wildlife sightings, adventure activities, and especially beach life.

Discover how to spend a few days in Fort Myers with this 2-day Fort Myers itinerary.

Weekend in Fort Myers: day 1

Your first day in Fort Myers will cover diverse ground: wildlife, history, nature, beer, citrus, and delicious food. That about sums up Florida in a day, I’d say.

Manatee Park

For your first day in Fort Myers, start off at the Manatee Park for some awesome wildlife sightseeing. Like the Manatee Viewing Center in Tampa , the Manatee Park in Fort Myers is a natural(ish) phenomenon.

Here, local manatees flock to the warm discharge waters from the nearby power plants during the “winter” months. “Winter” in Florida being November to April.

Visiting the Manatee Park is totally free and you can see manatees in their natural environment, free of human interaction. There’s a gift shop on site, a learning center, free activities for kids (and geeky, animal-loving adults), and free parking.

2 days in Fort Myers, Florida, a fun weekend itinerary: Manatee Park

Edison & Ford Winter Estate

Next up is the most popular of all the Fort Myers attractions: the Edison & Ford Winter Estates . Being pretty much what you must think it is, the Edison & Ford Winter Estates are indeed the winter estates of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford.

Turns out, the two were best buds back in the day—so much so that they set up two awesome winter estates right next to each other on some of the most gorgeous Florida property.

Here, you can tour their estates, yes, but the real gems are the museum detailing the lives and work of both men, the car collection, rooms upon rooms of their inventions, and, my personal favorite, Thomas Edison’s labs.

The property itself is beautiful and situated right on the water. It serves as an unofficial botanical garden of sorts and touring the grounds on a sunny day is a Fort Myers must.

The street you’ll cross between the museum/lab and the estates is historic McGregor Boulevard. Look down the street as you cross at the estimated 1800 palm trees lining the street. This impressive display was made possible by Thomas Edison’s own donations in the late 1800s. She’s a looker!

2 days in Fort Myers, Florida, a fun weekend itinerary: Edison and Ford Winter Estates, Homes

Lunch at Shrimp Shack

After manatee viewing and history overload at the Edison and Ford Estates, you should be ready for lunch. Head over to the Shrimp Shack for a seriously simple, seriously good seafood lunch.

Everything our group ate was delicious and the prices are great. If you don’t have gray hair, then you’re sure to be the only one of your kind in there. Don’t let the average age of the clientele do all the talking—this place is fantastic.

2 days in Fort Myers, Florida, a fun weekend itinerary: lunch at the Shrimp Shack

Sun Harvest Citrus

Next up is a quintessentially Florida experience: fresh citrus. Florida is known as the home of oranges, but citrus fruits of all types are grown here. All around Florida you can find citrus factories and here in Fort Myers is Sun Harvest .

At Sun Harvest you can purchase fresh fruit, fresh fruit juices, ice cream, all kinds of gifts and souvenirs, and much more. You can even squeeze in a look inside the production facility. But my favorite part is all the free samples .

Stop by Sun Harvest and taste some of their delicious fresh citrus fruits and amazing fresh juices. Pro tip: the strawberry orange juice is the hands-down winner.

2 days in Fort Myers, Florida, a fun weekend itinerary: Sun Harvest Citrus factory

Six Mile Slough Preserve

After Sun Harvest, it’s time to walk off your shrimp burgers and orange soft serve at the Six Mile Slough Preserve . The Six Mile Slough Preserve is a protected 3,500-acre park that’s great for wildlife viewing (yes, even alligators!). There are boardwalk trails through the wetlands, a butterfly garden, and even a colony of feral pigs I kept hearing about but did not see.

The park is endlessly interesting and you’re bound to see a ton of cool flora and fauna. The area also offers restrooms, an interpretive center, and guided nature walks. (Or you could just spend the entire time searching for ‘gators like I did.) The Six Mile Slough Preserve is a great place to see and learn about local, native wildlife during your 2 days in Fort Myers.

Apparently ‘slough’ is pronounced sloo . Who knew?

2 days in Fort Myers, Florida, a fun weekend itinerary: Six Mile Slough Preserve boardwalk

Fort Myers Brewing Company

Grab some dinner then end your first of 2 days in Fort Myers at the Fort Myers Brewing Company . You’ll find great local beers here at a fun indoor/outdoor brewery with games and activities and all the usual craft brewery things.

Fort Myers Brewing Company has a wide range of flagship beers from golden lagers to IPAs to Porters and more, as well as some rotating seasonals.

2 days in Fort Myers: day 2

Your second day in Fort Myers is gonna be all about that #beachlife. As you may know, the Gulf Coast of Florida is world famous for its amazing beaches and the Fort Myers area is no exception.

The beaches of Sanibel Island and Fort Myers are considered to have the best shelling in the country . Fort Myers is neighbors to more than 100 barrier and coastal islands that help provide the area with over 400 species of seashells from the everyday to the exotic.

Take a Captiva Cruise

The beaches around Fort Myers are great… by why not take a boat out to:

  • A state park on a barrier island only accessible by boat that boasts the best shelling in the world?
  • The island and restaurant believed to be the inspiration for Jimmy Buffet’s song “Cheeseburger in Paradise?” (You can eat a cheeseburger there! In paradise!)
  • An exclusive private island with white cottages and lush vegetation?

You can see any of these on a Captiva Cruise. Captiva Cruises offers half or full day excursions to these gorgeous islands. Spend the day relaxing on a secluded beach or checking out Old Florida on a picturesque island. And all for way less than you’d expect.

Captiva Cruises also offers eco-friendly dolphin and wildlife cruises, sunset cruises, sailing adventures, and more. Plus, you could totally fit one of these into a day and still have time for more activities–their tours end at 3 and 4 PM.

2 days in Fort Myers, Florida, a fun weekend itinerary: Sanibel island

Sanibel Island

When you visit Fort Myers, you gotta check out Sanibel Island too—they’re kind of a package deal. Sanibel Island is just 45 minutes from downtown Fort Myers but offers a completely different environment. Here, the focus is on sea, sand, shells, and sexy sunsets. A visit here is a must when spending a weekend in Fort Myers.

Sanibel Island Lighthouse

While on Sanibel Island you can check out the Sanibel Island Lighthouse . There’s parking and beach areas around it though you can’t climb to the top like you can the one in St. Augustine . However, you can read about its history and check it out up close.

Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum

Here in the country’s shelling capital, you can visit the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum —the only museum in the U.S. dedicated to seashells and mollusks.

The Shell Museum is the leading authority on shells from Sanibel and the surrounding islands and it’s run by marine biologists, volunteers, and a world-renowned malacologist (mollusk scientist). You’ll see shells from the area, different shells from around the world, record-breaking shells including some of the world’s largest, and how shells have been used in art and architecture throughout history.

The museum also offers:

  • Guided beach walks with shell experts
  • Touch pools
  • Shell arts and crafts projects

2 days in Fort Myers, Florida, a fun weekend itinerary: Sanibel island seashell

Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW)

Just down the street from the Shell Museum is the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife , a teaching hospital and visitor education center dedicated to wildlife rescue and conservation.

Each year, CROW cares for around 3,500 sick and injured wildlife patients from the area. On a visit you’ll get to explore the Visitor Education Center, attend a “Wonders of Wildlife” presentation and get to meet some adorable animal ambassadors, and take part in a guided “wildlife walk” through the hospital.

Dinner at Island Cow

For dinner on Sanibel Island, head over to Island Cow —a piece of Old Florida atmosphere and the most-awarded restaurant in Fort Myers.

Having a meal at Island Cow is considered a must-do when visiting Sanibel Island. Here you’ll find delicious seafood in a fun, casual environment. Maybe they take the cow theme a little too far? Well, at least they sell booze.

Island Cow has live music, dining specials, games, outside dining, and is pet friendly.

Sunset on Sanibel Island

After dinner (or maybe before, depending on the time of year), head back over to the beach for an epic sunset viewing. The Florida Gulf Coast nails its sunsets and Fort Myers definitely plays its part in that.

However, a big however, you may encounter the notorious “no-see-ums”—a kind of almost invisible biting fly that loves beach skin. If you plan on visiting the beaches at night, make sure to pack some good insect repellent .

2 days in Fort Myers, Florida, a fun weekend itinerary: Sanibel island beach

Seasonal things to do in Fort Myers

Depending on what time of year you’ll be visiting Fort Myers, you may be able to sub one of the above activities for some good ol’ American baseball.

Spring training

Between late February and late March Major League Baseball’s spring training takes place in Fort Myers. Games typically take place at either 1:05 or 6:05 in the afternoon, depending on the day. Both the Boston Red Sox and the Minnesota Twins have spring training facilities in the area.

Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox spring training takes place at JetBlue Park over in the area of the Fort Myers airport and Fort Myers Brewing Company.

Minnesota Twins

The Minnesota Twins play their spring training games at the CenturyLink Sports Complex (Hammond Stadium) and have since 1991. You’ll find their park halfway between the Shrimp Shack and Sun Harvest Citrus.

Fort Myers beach, on Estero Island, is a seven-mile-long golden strip of sand with shallow, warm water, backed by homes and a small selection of hotels and restaurants. This is a perfect area for swimming, walking, and spotting dolphins, which frequent the area and can sometimes be seen as close as just a few feet off shore.

The beach runs from Bowditch Point Park in the north all the way down to Lovers Key State Park in the south, but most of the action is centered around the pier and the area known as Times Square .

The area south of the pier is the liveliest stretch of sand, where you'll find crowds of sun-seekers on hot days. You can rent beach chairs, and some places offer food service, creating a trendy beach scene. For a more sedate scene, check out the area north of the pier . Here, you'll find the beach backed by Lynn Hall Beach Park with picnic tables, barbecues, showers, and washroom facilities.

Fort Myers Beach north of the Pier

The main street through Fort Myers Beach is Estero Blvd , located a very short stroll from the beach. Parking can be at a premium on busy weekends, but if you go early, you should be able to find a spot at one of the many lots or street meters throughout the area. Private lots are available but tend to be expensive.

A better bet is to park your car for free in the Beach Park and Ride lot, and bypass the traffic by taking the shuttle into the beach area (Route 490). Don't worry about getting around without a car, another trolley (route 410) runs from Bowditch Park in the north down to Lover's Key State Park. Not to be confused with the trolleys, this is a free tram service. It also starts at Bowditch Park, but the route ends at the Matanzas Pass Preserve.

Times Square at Fort Myers Beach

Located directly behind the pier is lively Times Square. This area is home to a multitude of restaurants with patio seating, ice-cream shops, and all manner of beach and souvenir stores and surf shops. When you need a break from the beach or just want to grab some lunch, wander up to this area.

Right off the beach behind the pier is a pedestrian-only area, but farther back are streets where traffic is permitted and some parking is available. This is where you'll find T-shirt and beach shops. In the evenings, street performers entertain crowds.

Shops in Times Square

Times Square is a compact area, which can be easily explored on foot. The scene here is incredibly casual, with many people walking around in beach wear. The area is easily identified by colorful painted bricks.

For a pleasant stroll, walk northeast of Times Square along Old San Carlos Blvd to Matanzas Pass. This street is lined with a decent assortment of fast food and sit-down open-air restaurants and shops.

Home in Edison Estates

Located just north of downtown Fort Myers in a beautiful neighborhood are the Edison & Ford Winter Estates. These homes are now a National Historic Landmark and operate as a museum open to the public for tours. Spread over 21 acres, this waterfront site features the historical homes of these two fascinating men who were friends.

On a tour, you can see the expansive grounds, laboratories, and a modern museum with seven galleries, complete with vintage cars and displays on electricity. Also of note are the botanical gardens and an amazing Banyan Tree, reportedly the largest in North America, dating from 1925, which covers an acre of ground and is 65 feet tall.

First Street in River District

Fort Myers has done an excellent job of preserving its historical downtown. This area, denoted by the red interlocking roadway, is full of restaurants, theaters, and interesting boutiques. Art Deco buildings dating from the 1920s act as a backdrop for the area, which comes alive in the late afternoon and early evening. Patios fill with diners enjoying some of the fine fare on offer, and pedestrians stroll up and down the wide sidewalks.

One of the iconic restaurants along here is Ford's Garage , decorated in a 1920s service station theme and displaying vintage Ford vehicles and related items.

The pier at Fort Myers Beach

Dating originally from 1921 but fully rebuilt, the Fort Myers Pier juts out 560 feet into the Gulf of Mexico and is one of Southwest Florida's premier sunset spots. The pier is also known locally as Pelican Pier, owing to the fact that pelicans frequently line the pier and keep a close eye on people fishing.

The pier is free to walk on and has a large partially covered viewing area at the end, along with a small kiosk selling drinks, fishing supplies, and souvenirs halfway along the deck. From the pier, you can often see dolphins swimming parallel to the beach, not far offshore.

During the day, you'll see the lively beach scene to the south, people parasailing in the sky, and all kinds of boats racing back and forth just offshore. In the evening, the pier is all about sunsets. Join the crowds to see the sun dip below the horizon into the Gulf of Mexico and then grab a bite to eat on Old San Carlos Blvd.

Roseate spoonbills, Fort Myers

Just 45 minutes from downtown Fort Myers, J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge offers a wonderful look into the wildlife and ecosystems that define this area of Florida. The visitor center provides information on the refuge's wildlife and habitats, and gives background on its founder, Jay Norwood "Ding" Darling.

One of the highlights is a 90-minute, open-air tram tour led by a certified naturalist, with opportunities to spot alligators, wading birds, and if you are really lucky, a bobcat or otter. You can drive the same routing in your own car, and there is a charge to enter.

You can also see some of the park on foot along any of the four hiking trails . Other popular activities include fishing, stand up paddleboarding, canoeing, kayaking, and bird-watching. The refuge is located on Sanibel Island, just a short drive over the impressive Sanibel Island Causeway (toll charged) from the mainland.

Lovers Key State Park

Lovers Key State Park has one of the finest stretches of beach in the Fort Myers area and can be a pleasant escape from the traffic and craziness of Fort Myers Beach on busy days. The beach is reached via a short walk over a couple of bridges, where you have a chance of seeing alligators and other aquatic wildlife. If you have lots of beach gear, a free open-air shuttle runs on a regular basis from the main parking lot.

Lovers Key is a popular spot for canoeing, kayaking, and stand up paddleboarding due to its protected inland waterways. This is also a good spot to look for shells, as quite a few varieties wash up on the shores, and the competition among shellers is less intense than on Sanibel Island .

Lovers Key is located over a large bridge at the southern end of Estero Island. The best beaches are on the gulf side. At the south end of the park is a dog beach . It's a wonderful spot for those with four legs to play in the shallow waters with all their newfound friends.

Parking is easy here, with plenty of spaces; the cost is included with your daily admission.

Kayaking through mangroves around Fort Myers

The mangrove forests on Florida's Gulf Coast are an important and unique environment, home to countless animals. The only way to truly experience them is on the water, and the best way is by paddling through the multitude of twisty waterways. Bring your own kayaks and go exploring, or join a tour. One of the best spots is at Lover's Key State Park .

If you don't own kayaks and want to give this unique experience a try, take a two-hour Guided Eco Tour -Mangrove Estuary . Led by a knowledgeable guide, this tour takes you deep into the mangrove canopy, where you'll have an excellent chance of seeing manatees, dolphins, and sea turtles.

This is an easy tour and a fun thing for families to do on an outing. You'll have your choice of single or tandem kayaks, and stand up paddleboards. Tours start and leave from Lover's Key Park.

Alligator resting on log in Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve

The 3,500-acre Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve is a wonderful haven for wildlife, including alligators, otters, and turtles. It is also one of Fort Myers' best birding locations . You'll likely see wading birds like blue herons, ibis, snowy egrets, and if you are lucky, roseate spoonbills.

One of the highlights of a visit is a walk on the 1.4-mile-long boardwalk . This looping trail, complete with interpretive kiosks, takes you past a variety of flora, including red maple, wood ferns, and young cypress trees. The preserve is located at the eastern edge of Fort Myers and is a free attraction, although there is a modest fee to park.

Baseball

Every spring, jetBlue Park and Hammond Stadium come alive with the crack of the bat and the shout of the umpire as Major League Baseball's Spring Training, also known as the Florida Grapefruit League, comes to town.

The Boston Red Sox and the Minnesota Twins are the two teams that call Fort Myers home. The first game is usually in the 3rd week of February and wraps up about four weeks later. Games take place almost every day, so securing tickets is never an issue, but the schedule is released each November if you want to plan.

Sunset cruise in Fort Myers

The west side of Florida is renowned for its spectacular sunsets. The feeling of warm sand on your toes as you stand on the beach and watch the giant orb of yellow descend into the Gulf of Mexico is nothing short of wonderful.

If you want to get away from the crowds, it's best to get out on the water. The wind gently blowing in the sails, and the water gliding silently past the hulls is the best way to truly experience a magical sunset. If you are lucky, dolphins and sea turtles will cruise along with you.

The Sunset Sail is a two-hour cruise on a 36-foot catamaran cruise offshore along the beaches of Fort Myers. The personable captain will regale you with stories about the boat and area, and ideally position the boat for the most amazing sunset photos.

The boat leaves from the dock area by Hurricane Pass, just over the bridge from Times Square. Water and soft drinks are included.

Miniature train caboose at Lakes Regional Park

This former gravel quarry has been transformed into a 289-acre park and is a popular family destination and outdoor recreation area. Visiting Lakes Regional Park is also one of the free things to do in Fort Myers.

For the kids there is a splash pad and a playground, but one of the park's major highlights is the miniature train . The train, 1/8th the size of a real one, is driven by an engineer and runs on a 1.5-mile loop that passes by lakes, small recreated villages, and tropical woods. The loop takes approximately 15 minutes to complete, and the trains run every 30 minutes on the hour, seven days a week. Nearby the ticket office is a 3,200-square-foot train museum with interactive exhibits.

Those not interested in trains will enjoy the man-made lake . You can rent a boat or launch your own watercraft (no motors allowed), fish, or just enjoy watching the fountains. Bike rentals are also available, and a number of trails run through the park. If you want to get more active, there are several volleyball courts and fitness stations. Picnic sites in the park can be booked.

The best place to stay in Fort Myers is right downtown in the beautiful River District, or, if you are here to enjoy the beach, at Fort Myers Beach. Below are some highly rated hotels in these areas.

Luxury Hotels:

  • Near the north tip of Estero Island and with a fabulous beachfront location is Pink Shell Beach Resort. The hotel has a huge pool, complete with a waterfall from a stone arch; restaurants; and a spa. This is a large hotel, and rooms on higher floors have spectacular views from the balconies.
  • Slightly closer to the action of Fort Myers Beach, the Edison Beach House has a variety of suites with kitchens, and balconies providing full and partial ocean views. This property has a beachfront pool, and rental bicycles are available.
  • For accommodation in the heart of downtown Fort Myers, the Hotel Indo Fort Myers River District is a good option. From here, you can walk to dining, shopping, and theaters. This boutique hotel is set in a historic property and features a rooftop pool.

Mid-Range Hotels:

  • At the top end of mid-range, the Best Western Plus Beach Resort has an ideal waterfront location in Fort Myers Beach, just a short stroll from Times Square and the pier. Rooms have large balconies and ocean views, and the waterfront pool area with lounge chairs is the perfect spot to work on your tan.
  • Also located in the heart of the action is Beach Shell Inn . Here, you'll find a mix of rooms and suites, many of which have kitchenettes. Rooms look over the small pool, and the beach is 100 feet away, down a sand path.
  • Farther south in Fort Myers Beach, on an amazing stretch of sand, is the Outrigger Beach Resort . This resort has a Polynesian look and feel and a huge pool area. Two restaurants offer al fresco dining, and in the evening there is often live music. A variety of room styles, from efficiencies to apartments and regular rooms, either face the ocean or the pool area, and all have balconies.

Budget Hotels:

  • In the center of town and almost in Times Square is the Shipwreck Motel . This recently renovated hotel has decent rooms at a fair price and a small pool. Free parking is a bonus, and there are also barbecue grills for guests' use.
  • A great value is just down the street at the pet-friendly Carousel Inn on the Beach . All rooms come with kitchens, balconies, and ocean views.

Visit Fort Myers

Fort Myers is a sunny, warm-weather city where you can fish for tarpon, spy alligators and birds at wetland reserves and learn about two of the city’s most famous winter residents: Henry Ford and Thomas Edison.

The town’s premier attraction is the Edison and Ford Winter Estates, the neighboring properties where the two great inventors spent their winters. Browse the exhibits in the museum, which occupies their side-by-side abodes and details the work and achievements of the two pioneering businessmen.

For further insight into local history, visit the IMAG History and Science Center. Here, displays include an animal lab showcasing alligators, iguanas, pythons and prairie dogs among other creatures. Don’t miss the dinosaur-focused exhibit where real fossils are on show.

Abundant outdoor activities and wildlife-watching opportunities can be found in the Fort Myers area. Play a round of golf at Fort Myers Country Club or at Eastwood Golf Course. Venture upriver to Lee County Manatee Park between December and March to see the “sea cows” swimming in the warm waters. Stroll along the boardwalk trail of the Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve, where everything from migrating birds to alligators can be spotted.

Don’t leave without driving or taking a stroll down McGregor Boulevard. This stately road is lined with attractive royal palms, some of which, according to local legend, were planted by Thomas Edison. Admire the historic houses lining the riverbank and stop for a drink or a meal in one of the roadside cafés.

The nearest airport to Fort Myers is Southwest Florida International Airport, which is about 25 minutes from Fort Myers by car. Although bus and coach routes connect Fort Myers with other major Floridian cities, such as Miami, Orlando and Tampa, renting a car is the best way to travel around the area itself. If you fancy some beach time, the white-sand stretches of Fort Myers Beach are just a 30-minute drive away.

Planning a Family Trip to Fort Myers and Sanibel Island

BEACHOVERVIEW

Update : Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

As a gateway to some of Florida's favorite beaches on the Gulf of Mexico, the riverfront city of Fort Myers lures family travelers with the promise of year-round sunshine, sand, shells and typically mild seas. As full-time residents, my family has learned, however, that Fort Myers, its islands and neighboring communities hold charms much deeper than the obvious. Here are our tips about getting the most out of your visit to the Fort Myers area:

How to Get There

Fort Myers is home to Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW), about a 45-minute drive southeast of downtown. Many major airlines service RSW, including Delta, American, United, Air Canada, WestJet and several low-cost carriers such as Frontier in winter season (remember to take advantage of its Kids Fly Free promo).

Public transportation, taxis and ride-sharing exist from the airport, but those intending to do any sightseeing beyond walking distance from their accommodations typically rent a vehicle . Avid cyclists could get by without a car, particularly those staying on Sanibel Island, where there is 20 miles of a shared-use path. Reach Sanibel Island via a toll ($6 for coming on island, free to leave) causeway; Captiva lies across a short bridge on Sanibel's north end. Fort Myers Beach, south of the causeway to Sanibel, is most directly accessed by its own (free) high bridge.

Family-Friendly Neighborhoods

The islands.

Most families arriving to RSW head to Sanibel Island, Captiva Island or Fort Myers Beach. Sanibel is known worldwide for its seashells, thickly strewn across natural sand beaches lapped by safe waters. It also holds a number of nature attractions such as the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge and Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum . The casual restaurant scene and a bounty of condo resorts make families feel welcome. Captiva tends to be higher-end and quieter, but boasts a couple of well regarded family destination resorts like South Seas Island Resort and 'Tween Waters. Fort Myers Beach on Estero Island, the most affordable of the three, gets a little wild around spring break, but otherwise caters specifically to families who love playing in and around the water.

Fort Myers downtown

In Fort Myers, the downtown River District is the hub of activity for historic attractions, theater and art, casual restaurants and year-round street festivals such as the monthly ArtWalk and MusicWalk. Hotels are currently sparse, but more are coming. Across the river, Cape Coral has a sprawling suburban feel with one large marina destination resort, the region's only public water park, a river-beach park and nature and recreational attractions.

Bonita Springs and Naples

Visitors to the towns of Bonita Springs and Naples, both south of Fort Myers, also fly into RSW. Their upscale resorts, lovely beaches, superlative shopping and art, and relative proximity to the Florida Everglades also make them nice choices for vacationing families who want to go a little further down the coast.

Best Points Hotels in Fort Myers Area for Families

Our favorite local accommodations in the Fort Myers area are the island beachfront resorts, where sand and sea stretch right outside the door. Others on the mainland offer convenience to metropolitan amenities and attractions. Points hotels are easier to find on the mainland, especially IHG and Marriott properties, which are among the best hotel chains for families .

Wyndham Garden Fort Myers Beach

One of the island properties that has awards available to hold the whole family is the Wyndham Garden, with a beachfront so sandy and soft that it hosts the annual American Sandsculpting Championship every November. The rooms offer family conveniences such as free Wi-Fi, a mini refrigerator and a microwave. There are pools and a restaurant on site, plus the Wyndham is close to other family-friendly restaurants. Rates start at 15k points per night or $111 per night plus 3k points.

Sanibel Harbour Marriott Resort & Spa

Located not on the island but on the mainland side of the causeway, this full-service resort regularly wins kudos for its family-friendliness. Earn Marriott points while enjoying its full complement of restaurants, including a dining yacht, water sports, pools, trails and a small beach. Rates start at $234 or 35k Marriott points per night. It could be a good place to use the up to 35k free-night certificate you get on the card anniversary of the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card.

Residence Inn Fort Myers Sanibel

Only a 15-minute drive to Sanibel and a five-minute drive to Bunche Beach on the mainland, the Residence Inn's two-queen (plus sofa bed), one-bedroom suites offer the convenience of a full kitchen, and there's a grocery store within walking distance. Complimentary Wi-Fi and hot breakfast figure into rates starting at $126 or 25k Marriott points per night.

Westin Cape Coral Resort at Marina Village

fort myers fl travel guide

The resort doesn't have a beach, but does provide a shuttle to Fort Myers Beach, as well as watersports rentals and excursions on the Caloosahatchee River. Restaurants and pools complete the family amenities. It's within walking distance to the Rotary Park Environmental Center with its butterfly house, playground and burrowing owl population. We appreciate its wide accommodations inventory, which ranges from traditional guest rooms to three-bedroom units. Only the double guest rooms usually allow use of Marriott points, starting at 35k points or $136 per night. If you need more Marriott points, you can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards to your Marriott account on a 1:1 basis.

Crowne Plaza Fort Myers at Bell Towers Shops

Convenient to the airport, this hotel lives in a shopping-entertainment complex where families can walk to stores, restaurants and movie theaters. It offers shuttle service to the airport and around the area, plus has a pool, restaurant and free Wi-Fi. Rates start at $98 per night, IHG Rewards Club points redemption starts at 35K per night. Remember that if you have the IHG Rewards Premier Credit Card, your fourth award night is free.

Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort & Spa

South of Fort Myers, families can find one of the region's most lauded family resorts, complete with its own waterpark and semiprivate island beach. Its sprawling campus includes golf courses, a climbing wall, extensive water sports and diverse dining options. A family of four can choose from two queen beds or a king bed with sleeper sofa. Balconies and mini refrigerators are standard equipment. Use your Hyatt points to pay starting at 20k per night or to upgrade to club level. Here's why getting the World of Hyatt Credit Card makes total sense before your next family vacation.

Best Hotels on Sanibel-Captiva for Families

If your family is intent upon an island vacation, points aside, Sanibel and Captiva offer a good variety of destination resorts with full-service amenities, plus a number of beach cottage properties we love for their sand-between-the-toes casual feel.

Sanibel's strong eco-mindedness and strict density and building codes mean you will pay more for accommodations, groceries and gifts, but keep in mind you can save on eating out at the many self-catering resorts, and resort parking is almost always free.

Sundial Beach Resort & Spa

Sundial suits families with a room inventory that ranges from studio to three-bedroom units, all with stocked kitchens and spacious floor plans. Perfect Sanibel Island days start at the beach and beachfront family pool, with its slide and tiki bar and grill. The resort's kids program concentrates on the environment, with an on-site nature center with touch tank. Water sports and bicycle rentals, tennis and pickleball courts on-property and golf privileges nearby keep the family active and engaged. Rates start around $150 per night for a family of four.

Gulf Breeze Cottages & Motel

The Gulf Breeze is one of my all-time favorite spots on the islands. I love its off-the-flipflop-path location on Sanibel Island, its slightly funky Florida vibe and the barefoot, easy island feel. Charming cottages, efficiencies and duplexes are fully equipped and the use of beach toys and a seashell-cleaning table are complimentary. Rates start around $240 per night for four people.

'Tween Waters Beach Resort & Spa

Beach at 'Tween Waters

Captiva Island's oldest property, 'Tween Waters has evolved since the early 1900s from cottage accommodations to include standard-issue hotel rooms and suites. As its name suggests, it's caught between beach-side and bay-side, where it maintains a full marina. Watch for birds and manatees hanging around the docks. Two pools, tennis courts and a selection of restaurants complete its family-friendly amenities. Rates start at $166 per night for families; check the website or subscribe to its e-newsletter for free night and other promotions year-round.

South Seas Island Resort & Spa

This sprawling, gated complex is the region's ultimate destination resort, with accommodations from hotel rooms to beach homes. The 330-acre spread at the north end of Captiva satisfies every vacation whim with a 2.5-mile beach, fishing pier, marina, nine-hole golf course, tennis courts, restaurants and bars, kids programs and shopping. Family-sized villas start at $319 per night. To get included breakfast and a property credit, consider booking via the Luxury Hotel and Resort Collection open to Chase cardholders.

Trip-Planning Tips

Christmas through Easter is high season in Southwest Florida, when rates and traffic peak. Add the heightened density from the region's temporary "snowbird" population and getting around, especially on the islands, can become challenging. Avoid rush hours in the morning and afternoon, when traffic can come to a standstill on the islands. Get to the beaches early to ensure a parking spot, or use alternative transportation, such as bicycles on Sanibel and beach trolleys on Fort Myers Beach.

The highest of high season kicks in Presidents Day weekend, when the area's biggest festival, the Edison Festival of Light , takes place. Spring break brings another influx starting in March.

fort myers fl travel guide

The second weekend in March, the Fort Myers Beach Shrimp Festival is another biggie for families and seafood-lovers. Sanibel celebrates its reputation for beachcombing with the annual Shell Festival early in the month. Spring training season for the Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins also brings a swell of visitors in late February through March.

Summer ushers in another busy season. High temps and humidity pull rates and crowds down somewhat, and the threat of hurricanes has to be watched. But for families who love being in and around the water, the lower rates make it worth the summer swelter, and hurricanes usually come with ample advance warning.

Once school starts up again, fall becomes ideal for families with preschool children. October translates into pleasant climes and the lowest rates of the year in many cases. Mid-October, "Ding" Darling Day on Sanibel Island includes free daylong nature activities for families, and November's American Sandsculpting Championship on Fort Myers Beach redefines "playing in the sand."

Florida's Gulf Coast -- especially in the Ft. Myers region -- is a great bet for families that are tired of the theme parks in Central Florida or the sometimes swanky beach resorts of South Florida. Here you'll find family-friendly lodging and plenty of natural wonders to explore. To keep within your budget, consider spreading your stay in the region around to take advantage of points and discounts at chains on the mainland, or plan your stay for lower traffic times.

Why you should visit fort myers.

Towering tropical fruit trees. Shell-strewn sugary white beaches. Incredible deep-sea fishing. Fort Myers is known for its easy access to natural resources, from the Gulf of Mexico to the Everglades. But there are many more reasons, from pristine golf courses to heralded boutiques, to visit Fort Myers and Fort Myers Beach.

When to Visit Fort Myers

The best times to visit Fort Myers are after hurricane season and during the stone crab harvest. Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30; stone crabs, a local delicacy, are harvested from October 15 to May 15. With these dates in mind, you'll want to consider a trip between mid-fall and late spring.

Average Fort Myers Weather

Fort Myers has a “tropical savanna” climate. Its nine-month stretch of pleasant, sunny, and dry weather is punctuated by a hot, rainy summer. If you visit Fort Myers between June and September, you’ll also see thunderstorms most afternoons; some bring dangerous lightning—which Floridians take seriously.
