Immerse Yourself in Ancient Cultures on a Cruise to Asia

From incense-scented temples to sizzling street food, an Asia cruise will make your senses come alive. In a single voyage on one of our ships, you’ll be amazed at the contrast between gleaming, futuristic cities and intricate shrines and pagodas where time seems to have stood still.

An Asia cruise is a culinary journey as well as a cultural one. Try steaming baskets of dim sum in Hong Kong, or spicy satay from a hawker stall in Singapore. Marvel at the detail and beauty of sushi in Japan, or sample spring rolls vibrant with fresh herbs in Vietnam.

Cruises in Asia are brimming with natural wonders, from the forested karst towers of Halong Bay to the snow-capped Mount Fuji. Relax in the shade of a coconut palm in Goa, or cool off under a waterfall on dreamy Ko Samui. After thrilling adventures ashore, relax into the luxurious setting of your Celebrity Cruises ship, whether you want to unwind by the inviting pool or toast with cocktails at the Sunset Bar.

Featured Asia Cruises

Discover the contrasts between Japan’s timeless culture and traditions and some of the most dynamic cities in the world. Wander through exquisite Zen gardens, or hike lush mountain trails. Come in spring for a sea of pale pink cherry blossoms, or later for the fiery colors of fall. Explore Hiroshima’s poignant Peace Memorial Park, and stride across Tokyo’s famous Shibuya Crossing.

Southeast Asia

Explore the highlights of dynamic Southeast Asia with Celebrity, from sultry, sophisticated Singapore to the gilded temples and floating markets of bustling Bangkok. Play castaway on Ko Samui’s idyllic beaches, explore Bali’s enchanting, arty heart, Ubud, or venture by boat through Vietnam’s Red River Delta, where emerald paddy fields give way to towering mountains.

Cruise the coast of India and be dazzled by the vibrancy of teeming Mumbai, the heart of Bollywood glamor, and the laid-back beach scene of Goa, where Indian and Portuguese cultures merge. Drift through the backwaters of lush Kerala on a traditional rice barge, and shop for spices and silks in historic Kochi.

Top Asia FAQs

When’s the best time to cruise to Asia?

We offer a wide variety of Asia itineraries with our revolutionized Celebrity Solstice ship sailing during the winter and Celebrity Millenium year round. Each region of Asia offers different experiences guests can enjoy.

The winter months, from November to February, are the ideal time to explore South Asia, including India and Sri Lanka, when the climate is less humid, giving you more energy for sightseeing.

Countries like South Korea and Japan are delightful all through the summer months and have perfect weather to lounge by their spectacular beaches.

The Lunar New Year usually falls in February, and this is a fantastic time to be in Asia, with widespread celebrations in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam.

Is a cruise a good way to see Asia?

A cruise is the perfect way to see Asia. You’re able to visit multiple places in comfort, with no effort required on your part to get from one to the other. A Celebrity Asian cruise vacation takes you to some of the most exciting destinations in the world, from Japan and Hong Kong, to the island paradise of Bali.  As an example, in the space of just 12 nights, you could visit exciting cities like Singapore, to off-the-beaten path destinations in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.

A 12-night Japan itinerary takes you to six contrasting destinations in Japan itself, as well as Busan in South Korea. You could also choose a 14-night itinerary from Singapore to Mumbai, which follows the coast of Malaysia, crosses the Indian Ocean, and then explores Sri Lanka and three ports in India.

Many of our itineraries include overnight stops in destinations including Hong Kong, Bangkok, Hanoi, Phuket and more, giving you time to experience local night markets and restaurants.

Where do Asia cruises depart from?

Celebrity offers a wide choice of cruises in Asia. Departure ports include Bali, Hong Kong, Singapore, Mumbai, and Tokyo.

Do I need visas to visit each country?

It is the responsibility of each guest to identify and obtain all required travel documents and have them available at the pier when necessary. Before leaving home, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the required travel documents you will be asked to provide prior to boarding the ship. You’ll find more information here .

The majority of Asian nations do not require a visa for entry, but some do. To visit India, for example, you will need to get a visa before you leave home.

What are the main ports of call on an Asian cruise?

Any cruise to Asia is packed with exciting ports, from vibrant cities to blissful beach locations on islands including Langkawi, Ko Samui, and Phuket.

To many, the real marquee ports are the cities like Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Mumbai, Tokyo, and Ho Chi Minh City. But often, it’s the places in between that leave just as great an impression, whether you’re exploring an exquisite temple in Kyoto or cruising the serene backwaters of Cochin on a rice barge.

What’s best about an Asia cruise with Celebrity is that our ships stay overnight in many ports, so you can really get to know a destination. In Hanoi, for example, you can enjoy the buzz of the city and spend a day sailing beautiful Halong Bay. In Bangkok, there’s time to see the shimmering Grand Palace as well as take a river cruise and browse colorful floating markets.

Are there any vaccination or health requirements?

There are no compulsory vaccinations to visit Asian countries, but it is recommended to be up to date with all your regular inoculations, including tetanus and hepatitis A. It’s important to consult your physician in advance to plan a vaccination schedule.

Celebrity’s Asian itineraries do not visit ports where malaria is known to be a high risk, so it is unlikely that you will need anti-malarial drugs—but again, check with your physician or travel health clinic in advance as everybody’s situation is different.

How do I handle currency exchange for the different countries visited?

Most places in Southeast Asia and Japan take credit cards, but you will need a small amount of local currency to shop in markets or buy souvenirs from vendors. For India, rural areas still have a cash economy, so you will need some rupees outside of the main urban areas.

While enthusiastic souvenir vendors may offer to take U.S. dollars, you will not get a good exchange rate, and you will be given change in local currency. If you choose to pay this way, make sure you know the exchange rate and what denominations local notes come in.

If you use an ATM on your travels, it’s safer to use one that’s attached to a reputable bank.

What languages are commonly spoken, and will I need a translator or phrasebook?

Dozens of different languages are spoken across Asia; India alone has 22 official languages. While it’s polite to offer a greeting in the local language, and helpful to know a few phrases, it’s not necessary to be fluent.

You will not need a translator on your travels in Asia. All guides on shore excursions speak English. A lot of signage is in English as well as the local language, especially in tourist areas. In many countries, such as Hong Kong, Singapore, and India, English is an official language, and in many others, it is taught in school as a second language.

What cultural and historical sites can I expect to see on excursions?

Our wide range of excursions takes you to all the main cultural sites in the ports we visit. You can explore historic George Town from Penang, and take in the buzz and bustle of Hong Kong’s various night markets on an after-dark tour.

See the temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok and visit the poignant Peace Memorial Museum in Hiroshima. Learn about Buddhism with a monk in Colombo, and explore the dazzling imperial city of Hue from Chan May, Vietnam.

Are there specific cultural norms or etiquette I should be aware of?

It’s a good idea to take a little time to understand the culture of the Asian countries you are visiting. Generally speaking, extreme politeness is important, as is taking the time to greet people, and remaining softly spoken.

Many Asian countries are Buddhist, in which case, always show respect to Buddha statues and temples and do not touch Buddhist monks. Do not point at people and do not be surprised if a local avoids eye contact during a conversation; this is a sign of respect. In Thailand, it is an offense to say anything negative about the royal family.

Try to understand the sense of “face” that is prevalent in Asian countries. Saving face is important; so, for example, a person may tell you what they think you want to hear rather than the reality, to avoid losing face. Shouting at someone causes you to lose face.

Japan in particular is a country with a complex social etiquette. Just a few include not tipping (it’s just not done here); never blowing your nose in public; taking off your shoes before entering a temple; and not blocking busy sidewalks in the densely populated cities.

If you’re visiting somewhere on a tour where specific etiquette is expected, your guide will point out all you need to know.

Asia's summers tend to be hot and humid — great weather for lounging on a tropical beach, but if you're looking for cooler temps, visit at the end of spring or the start of autumn.

English is spoken and taught in many Asian countries as a second language, but it's always handy to know a few words in the local language to help you navigate the place and culture.

Stop for food at the spots you see crowded with locals: You might wait in line a bit, but the busy spots are sure to serve up the best, most authentic dishes.

This Cruise Line Just Returned to Asia for the First Time in 3 Years — and It's Sailing to 11 Countries

Norwegian Jewel will spend six months sailing the region.

travel line asia

Courtesy of Norwegian Cruise Line

At long last, travel to Asia is back, and that includes cruise ship itineraries. Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) just returned to the region for the first time in more than three years.

"Today is a milestone moment, as we return to Asia with Norwegian Jewel ’s arrival to Tokyo," David J. Herrera, president of NCL, said in a statement obtained by Travel + Leisure .

The 2,400-passenger Norwegian Jewel will make Asia her home for the next six months, sailing to 11 countries, including Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, and South Korea. Itineraries will range from 10 to 14 days, and some will even include overnights at ports like Phuket, Thailand, and Bali, Indonesia.

This season will mark the first time in the NCL's history that a ship in the fleet will call at numerous ports across the region, including Seoul (Incheon), South Korea; Manila, Boracay, Palawan, and Salomague in the Philippines; Bintan Island, Indonesia; and Hualien, Taiwan.

"We pride ourselves in delivering the best vacation experience and providing endless opportunities for our guests to explore the world…including Asia!" said Herrera. "This region delivers some of the most intriguing history, cuisine, and culture for travelers to discover, and we are thrilled to deliver a diverse selection of port-rich voyages. This market is important to us, and we are committed to servicing it in the long term."

The 2023 return to Asia is just the start for NCL, which plans to expand its presence in the region next year. Norwegian Spirit , Norwegian Sun , and Norwegian Sky will join Norwegian Jewel in Asia for the 2024–25 season — a record number of NCL ships in Asia at a single time. Guests will even be able to add NCL Cruise Tours onto certain itineraries, adding three-night extensions on land in Tokyo, Taipei, and Singapore.

Rates for an 11-day cruise to Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia start at $599 per person; book your trip at ncl.com .

A complete guide to train travel in Southeast Asia

Travel by train in Southeast Asia

A complete guide to Southeast Asia train travel, featuring resources for buying tickets and reviews of rail travel in the region.

An introduction to Southeast Asia Railways

Travel by train is a great way to experience the landscapes of Southeast Asia and to meet the people who live here. Personally, I think train travel is the best way to travel in the region, and I always choose it if it’s a suitable option.

With low-cost airlines having revolutionised travel in Southeast Asia, it’s become easy to just fly everywhere. If you are travelling in the region for the first time then I would consider adding rail travel whenever it’s possible.

I remember little details of the first train trip I took in Thailand. The whirr of the ceiling fan (yes, trains with ceiling fans) and the sound of the train tracks as the sleeper train from Bangkok made its way to Surat Thani for the Gulf islands. I remember nothing of the flight home.

Trains in the region for the most part have not been fully modernised yet, so it is a completely different travel experience compared to travel in Europe and East Asia. For that reason alone you should experience it as it once was before we are all riding modern trains built in China.

This guide covers every country in Southeast Asia that has a railway, though it doesn’t include city metro railways or airport trains. Most of the railway action is on mainland Southeast Asia, with a few railways running on the major islands in maritime Southeast Asia.

Out of the 17,000+ islands of Indonesia, there are two islands with railways, and four other islands are planning, promising, or constructing railways.

Train at Gambir Station, Jakarta

Getting around by train is a good option on Java with trains crossing the entire length of the island. If you are overlanding from Sumatra it’s possible to get the ferry to Merak and begin your journey there.

Starting from Jakarta, the train is the best way to escape the city as you don’t have to go through traffic to get to the bus station. Gambir Station is close to Jalan Jaksa, which is the backpacker street in Jakarta .

Train travel in Java

There are three branches that travel east towards Surabaya, and a single line after Surabaya that continues to the eastern end of Java at Banyuwangi. From there you can get bus and ferry tickets to Bali.

For visitors, the best route to take is the line that goes via Bandung and Yogyakarta.

Railway crossing at Yogyakarta

Most visitors continue on to Bali, but if you can’t get enough of Java trains then you can turn back to Jakarta via Semarang on the northern route.

Jakarta Airport Rail Link – Train details, and which stations are best for visitors.

For an island that is over 2000km long Sumatra only has a few rail options, which are not useful from a tourist’s perspective. Eventually, these disjointed lines will form part of the Trans-Sumatra railway , which will traverse the length of the island. For now, services in operation are most useful if you are slow-travelling around the island.

Yangon Central Railway Station

Railway Operator: Ministry of Rail Transportation

Myanmar is similar to shape and length of Thailand, and like Thailand the trains here are hub-and-spoke from the principal city (Yangon is no longer the capital). There are over 4000km of railway in Myanmar, and trains travel to main points of interest (Bagan and Inle Lake). Decades of underinvestment have left the railways in poor condition, so don’t expect similar service and comfort to Thailand. Lines are being restored and new carriages deployed, so hopefully that will change over the coming years. For now, though, trains are much slower than the bus, and perhaps your last chance to travel rough before everything is modernised.

In Yangon check out the Yangon Circle Train . While this is technically a commuter train, this is a unique travel experience to see this old rail service that does what it says and circles Yangon.

From Yangon, there are services north of Bagan and Mandalay. The overnight train Yangon and Bagan may not be comfortable, but it is certainly an experience you’ll remember.

Another branch to Mandalay goes via the new capital of Naypyitaw. From Thazi (north of Naypyitaw) there are services to Kalaw and Shwenyaung (for Inle Lake).

Northeast of Mandalay the service to Lashio is one of the great Southeast Asia rail experiences, especially between Pyin U Lwin To Hsipaw. I caught this train in December 2011 when the country was just beginning to open up.

This was the 1st class carriage for the Mandalay-Lashio train. The trains are now being upgraded and pictures I’ve seen of newer trains look more comfortable than the one I took.

1st class carriage Pyin U Lwin To Hsipaw (December 2011)

I joined this service at Pyin U Lwin, which is a good place to start as the Mandalay service starts at 4 am. Trains from Pyin Oo Lwin depart at a more civilised time of 8:22 am.

Pyin U Lwin train station

The highlight of this trip is crossing the Goteik viaduct , which was built in 1900 with parts shipped from the United States.

The train I was on was running late so we got to see the southbound train crossing the bridge first.

Pyin U Lwin To Hsipaw Train

When I visited the guidebook knowledge was that you couldn’t take photos of the bridge while crossing. Something about state secrets. I imagine now there would be selfie sticks hanging out of every window.

Crossing the Goteik viaduct

Another travel option is from Mandalay to Myitkyina , which will take you to the most northerly station in Southeast Asia.

Travelling south of Yangon there is a line that runs to Mawlamyine (Moulmein) and Dawei, which is scenic yet slow .

International trains from Myanmar

Myanmar has borders with four countries but there are no international services to any.

Philippines

Railway Operator: Philippine National Railways

The only functioning railway in the Philippines is in Luzon. Not counting the Manila commuter trains there is one line that runs from Manila to Legaspi. Most of that line is not operating as it is being repaired, and only the section from Naga to Legaspi is operating.

Tanjong Pagar railway station

Singapore has no national railway but it’s served by the Malaysian railway, KTM.

Trains from Malaysia used to terminate at Tanjong Pagar railway station, which was close to the city centre. That station was closed down in June 2011 and trains now terminate at Woodlands. This station is less than a kilometre from the Malaysia border so you are barely getting any Singapore train travel. The new station is connected to the MRT line.

And now to make the travel experience even worse, there is currently no direct train from Kuala Lumpur. Trains stop at the border at Johor Bahru and there you wait for another train to shuttle across the border. There is a high-speed train planned for the KL-Singapore route, so maybe then you will be able to get the same train.

A more luxurious train option is the Eastern and Oriental Express – a luxury train service that travels between Singapore and Bangkok, taking three days and two nights.

For railway enthusiasts and urban explorers, the disused railway corridor is worth a visit, parts of which are a walking path. There are plans to transform the path into a Highline-style walkway .

Hualamphong Train Station, Bangkok - Thailand

Railway Operator: State Railway of Thailand

Thailand has a good network of railways, with all lines radiating from the central point of Bangkok. Thailand is 1600km from north to south, which lends itself to overnight train travel.

To the north the overnight train to Chiang Mai is a relaxing way to travel. Leaving in the evening the train arrives early the next day. The seats are converted into beds and are surprisingly comfortable.

2nd class sleeper train

With long north-south distances and trains in both directions often sharing a single line, train schedules are timed according to when they can pass each other.

3rd class

Heading south, the overnight train from Bangkok to Surat Thani is a good way to travel to the gulf islands of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan.

One of the most unusual railway experiences in Southeast Asia is Maeklong market train , which is south of Bangkok. To get to the station the train goes through an actual market. Vendors who set up stalls on the track quickly pack up their goods and move to the side while the train passes through.

Maeklong market train

International trains from Thailand

Thailand is surrounded by four countries, though there are only two international train services.

There is a train that travels to Laos, which is a cross-border shuttle that runs from Nong Khai (Thailand) to Thanaleng (Laos). This train is timed to meet the Bangkok to Nong Khai service , and Thanaleng is about 20km from Vientiane.

For trains to Malaysia, there is a direct service to Padang Besar which is just over the border (after Hat Yai, Thailand). From Padang Besar, you can connect to Butterworth (for Penang), KL, and Singapore.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a Southeast Asia Train Pass?

Southeast Asia is a long way from being developed enough to offer a railway pass that would be similar to the Eurail Pass in Europe. The railway network of Southeast Asia is not extensive enough to warrant such a ticket, and there are very few international connections.

Can I travel from India to Myanmar by train?

Even though the two countries are neighbours there is no rail link yet. There are plans to build a line from Impal in India to Tamu in Myanmar. This would provide an eventual connection from Delhi to Yangon.

Are there any international train services in Southeast Asia?

There are currently three international services:

Bangkok (thailand) – Padang Besar (Malaysia) Nong Khai (Thailand) – Thanaleng (Laos) Johor Bahru (Malaysia – Woodlands (Singapore)

Future Southeast Asia Railways

One of my projects at Nomadic Notes has been to map the proposed railways of Southeast Asia. To illustrate what is planned for the region I’ve created a map of current and proposed railways in Southeast Asia .

Current and proposed railways of Southeast Asia (2017)

The black lines on the map represent railways that are currently operating, while the red lines are proposed lines.

This map is based on my previous project which depicted Southeast Asia railways as a subway-style map.

Future Southeast Asia Railway Map

This map has details of all the proposed railways which are listed here: Future Southeast Asia – A map of proposed railways in Southeast Asia

This is very interesting to read. Your south-east Asia train itinerary shows what country really improves, but the most interesting part is how people live this way. Thailand travel to Chian Mai seems so relaxing.

Great resource, James. Thanks for sharing it with us.

If you are ever in Pattaya we (Pattaya City Expats Club) would love to have you as a speaker – we meet Sunday mornings at the Tavern by the Sea, part of the Amari complex. Let us know if you plan heading this way. Or just come along for the meeting, anytime you are in the area.

I also love rail – did Mandalay to Yangon first week of this year, before the new rolling stock – 15 hours.

I designed a line for Taipei – lived there 20 odd years. You can see it at

– unfortunately HiSos didn’t like it, gave them too much access to Taipei (or was it the other? 😉 so it got muzzled.

Also, would like to get the Northern Rivers line working again – it can be done.

All the best, Stuart.

thanks for the feedback and invitation – I’m honoured to be offered to speak. I am in Thailand a couple of times a year so I will let you know if my schedule allows a visit.

I visited Taipei a two years ago and I was impressed with their metro, which was about to expand by 30% when I was there.

Chat later.

Traveling by train in Vietnam is considered as the best way to catch the country’s landscape and seascape, much more convenient than open bus if you’re planning to travel throughout Vietnam. Western tourists tend to lie on a soft sleeper so you should book online a ticket as soon as possible

Traveling by train through Southeast Asia is safe, incredibly cheap, efficient, relatively environmentally-friendly, and a much better way to get a sense of what a country is like than you would ever get by flying.

I don’t know if you are still monitoring this site; but I have looked at the Thai railways site. I find it next to useless, both as far as finding any information, as well as just finding so little of any use. I am trying to find at which station I could connect with this train on the way to Penang (Butterworth) coming from Kawthaung in Myanmar – (Ranong in Thailand); and WHEN this train runs through. Do you know from which station, I could join this train, and when it runs? Or from WHERE I can get this information? Thanks Greg

March 10, 2017 at 1:48 pm

yes the Thai railways site is a usability nightmare and of not much help.

There is no train at Ranong so to get to Butterworth you will need to cross the peninsula by bus to Surat Thani train station. There used to be a daily train from Bangkok to Butterworth but that no longer runs. You now go from Surat Thani to Padang Besar on the border, and change trains there for Butterworth.

If you have any other question you can ask at this new group about Southeast Asia Railways:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/1700545326676832/

March 10, 2017 at 4:54 pm

Thanks for your VERY quick reply. Most appreciated, as I am considering my travel plans right now. I was thinking of travelling from Mawlamyine/Maulmyine right down to Ranong, but had no idea, and there seems to be no ‘rail map’ on Thai rail, as to where to go to pick up the train. So, thank you for advising me about that.

To just get to Ranong looks like it will take a lot of time (by road); and time is limited. So I will look at doing this ‘road (+train) trip possibly in 1 year’s time. I have noted the FB reference for future use. Thanks again Best wishes Greg

Very helpful. Recently did Chiang Mai to Singapore, spread out over a month with about 10 stops along the way. Great way to see the countryside.

This far-flung destination, which is located about 370 miles from civilization in the Indian Ocean, is made up of more than 1,100 idyllic islands (roughly 200 of which are inhabited). Tokyo is as fast-paced as cities come – it's the most populated city in the world, after all. Japan's capital features neon-lit skyscrapers and crowded streets that novice visitors may find dizzying, but its one-of-a-kind offerings can't be missed. Spend days touring quirky museums, exploring fascinating architecture or visiting Odaiba for its premier shopping scene. Or, take in some quieter, more peaceful moments at a holy site like the Meiji Shrine or Sensoji Temple. Tokyo's unrivaled gastronomic landscape (think: sushi, ramen, sky-high cocktail bars and more Michelin darlings than you could hope to visit) also makes it a bucket list destination for foodies.

Phuket, Thailand's elongated beaches and cerulean waters embody a paradise that few other Asian destinations can rival. The towering Big Buddha statue is also a top attraction, while Phuket's buzzing beach clubs and nightlife options hold appeal for those looking to let loose. What's more, like most destinations in Thailand, travelers can find relatively affordable lodging options here.

Just note, seeing the park's top attractions typically requires at least two weeks of trekking, and due to Sagarmatha's high elevation and rocky, steep terrain, a trip here isn't for the faint of heart.

Beyond Hong Kong's sleek, towering skyscrapers (best admired from Victoria Peak), visitors can find natural and cultural gems on the more than 250 outlying islands, such as Lantau Island, or shop the city's bustling street markets. Dim sum is a must, but Hong Kong's robust dining scene also offers everything from street food to Michelin-starred fine dining. And when the sun goes down, watch the Symphony of Lights laser show dazzle the skyline along Victoria Harbor.

In addition to saving time for religious sites, be sure to visit the famous Philosopher's Path, preferably during cherry blossom season, and the mystical Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. When hunger strikes, treat yourself to kaiseki: a traditional multicourse meal native to Japan. For another essential Japanese experience, stay at one of the many ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) in Kyoto.

From the moment you touchdown at Singapore Changi Airport (a tourist destination in itself), Singapore shows off its futuristic embellishment. But this Southeast Asia jewel is also unique for its amalgamation of cultures. This fusion takes form in the city's colorful neighborhoods, eclectic culinary scene and overall modern atmosphere. After shopping on flashy Orchard Road and chowing down in cultural enclaves like Little India or Chinatown, head downtown to take in the towering skyscrapers from Merlion Park, the Singapore Flyer or the sky-high Gardens by the Bay.

The island nation of Sri Lanka, located off the southern tip of India, boasts rainforests, beaches and ruins without the tourist crowds of other popular Asian destinations. Despite its small footprint, Sri Lanka features 26 national parks, many of which are ideal for a safari excursion to encounter elephants, leopards and sloth bears. Meanwhile, ancient sites like Sigiriya, a 600-foot-high fortress, and the temples of Polonnaruwa hold their own appeal, and the palm-fringed golden beaches that line the shores are never too far away for those seeking a more laid-back vacation.

Hanoi is perfect for first-time Vietnam visitors, with tranquil lakes offsetting its fast-paced bustle and darting motorbikes. The country's capital offers plenty in the way of history, culture, shopping, dining and natural splendor. Start your day off with a Vietnamese coffee, then head to Hanoi's central Old Quarter for a stroll through the many narrow, colorful streets and a taste of mouthwatering street food. After that, check out one of the city's many temples, including the ancient Temple of Literature, which dates back to the 11th century, or head to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, a must-visit for history buffs.

Bali's natural beauty is so profound, travelers have been known to refer to the Indonesian destination as "heaven on Earth." Here, lush rainforests, picturesque mountains, sweeping valleys and scenic beaches all sit side by side. You'll also find a handful of serene temples in this Southeast Asia hot spot, including Uluwatu and Tanah Lot temples – both excellent places to catch a sunset. And no first-time trip to Bali would be complete without on a visit to Ubud, Bali's cultural capital and home of the region's famous rice terraces.

Whether you visit in spring (for cherry blossoms), summer (for climbing), autumn (for foliage) or winter (for nearby ski resorts), Japan's highest peak and imposing attraction is sure to capture your attention. Mount Fuji lies about 60 miles southwest of Tokyo, perfect for a daytrip from the city or a glimpse from a train ride, but this active volcano is also worthy of deeper exploration. Base yourself in the Fuji Five Lakes area to enjoy picture-perfect views at Arakurayama Sengen Park or from one of Lake Kawaguchiko's onsens (hot springs), and don't leave without sampling local hoto noodles.

If you only have time to go to one beach in Thailand, make it Railay Beach, one of the world's most beautiful beaches . Located in the country's Krabi province, Railay Beach features glistening white sands and is surrounded by limestone rock formations (covered in leafy green vegetation) that jut out from the sea. If you're feeling adventurous, explore the area's natural wonders with a rock climbing excursion or go for a nighttime kayak trip to see bioluminescent plankton. As if this beach destination couldn't get more alluring, you're only able to reach it by boat. Daytrips from nearby Ao Nang are popular among travelers.

Siem Reap is the home of Angkor Wat, an ornate Buddhist temple built in the 12th century that is believed to be the largest religious monument in the world. The impressive landmark is just one of many must-sees within Cambodia's UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angkor. The complex also includes the equally detailed Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm Temple. Because of the immense popularity of Angkor (the site receives millions of visitors per year), you may want to travel during a shoulder month like March or November to avoid bumping elbows with fellow travelers.

Travel to the capital of Indian state Rajasthan to marvel at the "Pink City's" incredible architecture. Hawa Mahal, a pink sandstone palace that was modeled after Hindu god Krishna's crown, is Jaipur's biggest claim to fame. The property's astounding 953 honeycomb-patterned windows allowed the original ladies of the royal family to view the comings and goings of the Indian city without being seen. Other structures worth seeing are the Jaigarh Fort, Panna Meena ka Kund and Jantar Mantar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that displays larger-than-life astronomical instruments.

Thailand's capital city is filled to the brim with eye-catching Hindu sites, nonstop nightlife and incredible Thai cuisine. Sacred sites like Wat Arun and Wat Pho are pockets of calm amidst Bangkok's skyscrapers. Shoppers can enjoy the Chatuchak Weekend Market, one of the world's largest street markets, or venture to one of the floating markets located outside the city. While in Bangkok, grab as much grub as possible from the street stalls, and at night, you won't want to miss the lofty views from one of the many rooftop bars.

This national park is so loved and respected, its image is featured on China's paper currency. Guilin and Lijiang River National Park is located in the Guangxi region in the southeastern part of China. The Lijiang River runs about 50 miles from Guilin to Yangshuo, passing stunning landscapes and towering green karsts (eroded limestone) along the way. The best way to take in the otherworldly scenery is by boat cruise, though you may want to splurge on a luxury option since the trip can take up to five hours. Tourists who prefer to travel on their own time can also hike or bike along the river.

  • Home to half of the world’s top 10 trending tourism destinations, Asia Pacific is making a comeback: Mastercard Economics Institute on travel in 2024
  • Japan tops the trending list, welcoming a record-breaking 3M+ international arrivals in March
  • While outbound travel from the Chinese Mainland continues to recover, now at 80% of 2019 levels, more Indians are traveling than at any time in history
  • Travelers to APAC are vacationing longer while prioritizing experiences over purchases

The global travel sector is breaking boundaries in 2024 as consumer spending on tourism remains robust and passenger traffic soars, according to the latest report from the Mastercard Economics Institute (MEI). Released today, the MEI’s fifth annual report, " Travel Trends 2024: Breaking Boundaries " provides comprehensive insights into the evolving landscape of the travel industry across 74 markets, including 13 [1] i n the Asia Pacific region (APAC).

Despite fluctuating exchange rates and varying levels of affordability, travel is booming, with nine out of the last 10 record-setting spending days in the global cruise and airline industries occurring this year [2] . Looking ahead, the MEI anticipates this momentum will continue as consumers around the world prioritize meaningful experiences and allocate more of their budgets to travel.

Drawing on a unique analysis of aggregated and anonymized Mastercard transaction data, including Mastercard SpendingPulse™ and third-party data sources, the report takes a deep dive into key tourism trends for 2024 and beyond. Here in the Asia Pacific region, a few themes stand out, including:

APAC destinations are trending in a big way, comprising half of the top 10 hot spots that have demonstrated the greatest momentum among travelers. This is measured and ranked by the change in share of tourism transactions over the past 12 months ending March 2024.

  • Japan emerged as the #1 trending destination worldwide (growing 0.9% vs Ireland at 0.4%), as it welcomed 3,081,600 visitors from abroad in March 2024 – the highest level ever – even before the peak travel season begins. Driven by a weak yen (the lowest since 1990), Japan’s favorable exchange rate is expected to help it remain the clear tourism frontrunner throughout 2024, benefitting Japanese businesses catering to tourists and the local economy overall.
  • APAC passenger traffic is rebounding , particularly for shorter, intra-regional trips. For example, this summer's top destinations for travelers from Singapore include Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, and Perth.
  • Thailand tourism is expected to fully recover in 2024 , according to MEI, with total visitor arrivals now only 7% below 2019, pre-pandemic levels [3] . Notably, inbound flight traffic from South Asia and the ASEAN region is nearly 20% above 2019 levels.

travel line asia

“Consumers in the Asia Pacific region have an intense desire and willingness to travel and are becoming increasingly savvy to ensure they get the best value and unforgettable experiences from their trips,” said David Mann, chief economist, Asia Pacific, Mastercard. “For tourism authorities, retailers, the hospitality and F&B sectors, the bottom line is that costs matter. In today’s economy, foreign exchange rates and spending power have become vital components in driving a traveler’s assessment of value when they are making their plans. This suggests that businesses targeting tourism dollars need to review their current strategies, and shift them if necessary, to maintain their appeal to travelers.”

Summer holiday hot spots (June-Aug 2024 [4] )

While Japan was the top trending destination during the last 12 months [5] , looking ahead, Munich ranks as the #1 summer destination (in terms of share gain in flight bookings) due to its hosting of the UEFA EURO 2024 football championship in June. Tokyo comes in a close second while Bali (#6) and Bangkok (#7) are also among the top 10 cities where demand is gaining momentum in the next three months.

Chinese Mainland Domestic Tourism Rebounds While Outbound Travel Continues to Recover

The Chinese Mainland’s travel dynamic has shifted, as more Chinese tourists prioritize domestic trips over international ones.

  • The Chinese Mainland’s domestic tourism story is a positive one, as air passenger traffic has fully normalized and even exceeded 2019 levels, benefiting local businesses.
  • Meanwhile, international tourism traffic leaving the Chinese Mainland continues to recover and is now at 80.3% of 2019 levels.
  • Additional upside growth is expected in 2024, supported by visa exemptions in APAC and beyond, as well as an increase in international flight capacity, benefiting destinations such as Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.

More Indians are Traveling Than Ever Before

Strengthened by a burgeoning middle class, additional route capacity, and a strong desire to travel, 2024 marks the year when more Indians are traveling internationally than at any time in history.

  • In the first three months of 2024, 97 million passengers traveled through Indian airports. Just 10 years ago, the same figure would have taken a whole year to achieve.
  • Domestic passenger traffic is up 21% compared to 2019 levels while international passenger traffic is up 4%, as of March 2024.
  • Indian travelers to key markets are up significantly in 2024 compared to 2019: 53% increase in visitors to Japan, 248% increase to Vietnam, 59% increase to the United States (notable as total overseas arrivals to the U.S. are still 7% below 2019 levels, largely due to the strong USD).

Leisure for Longer

  • In APAC (excluding ANZ) in 2024, tourists are extending their trips by an average of 2 days to a total duration of 7.4 days, motivated by the affordability of destinations, warm weather, and favorable exchange rates. This compares to the 2019 average of 6.1 days per trip.
  • In Australia and New Zealand (ANZ), overseas visitors are staying for an average of 5.4 days, an increase of 0.6 days compared to 2019.
  • The APAC destinations with the longest increase in trip duration between 2019-2024 are India (+2 days), Vietnam (+2 days), Indonesia (+1.9 days), and Japan (+1.4 days), largely due to their lower growth in hotel prices during this period compared to other markets.
  • Longer stays generally translate to more spend per trip too, which benefits local economies.

Thrill Seekers Want Experiences and Nightlife

Consumers globally continue to prioritize experiences over material goods. This is playing out in the travel sector as spending on experiences and nightlife totals 12% of tourism sales – the highest point in at least five years. Meanwhile, retail shopping is recovering at a slower pace.

  • Australian tourists are the highest spenders globally on experiences and nightlife.
  • In 2024, Aussies are spending one of every five dollars (19%) on these activities – significantly higher than the global average (12%).
  • Tourists from the Chinese Mainland are also increasingly seeking out experiences, spending 10% on this category in 2024, up from 7% in 2023.

Casual Trumps Luxury for Fashion and Food

Tourists today prefer laid-back vibes, except in spots where luxury retail and fine dining provide exceptional value for money.

  • Notably, luxury fashion sales soared YoY in the year ending March 2024 in Japan (152%) and Hong Kong SAR (208%), despite casual fashion still leading the pack in most places.
  • Hong Kong SAR’s surge is partly attributed to its late reopening in 2023, whereas Japan's boom stems from a weak yen and robust inbound tourism.
  • Australia, India, and Thailand now enjoy burgeoning fine dining scenes, leading to premium dining outperformance compared to casual dining, which remains dominant elsewhere.

“Amidst the evolving tourism landscape and continuing surge in travel throughout 2024, the Mastercard Economics Institute aids businesses and policymakers in translating macroeconomic forces and data insights into actionable strategies at the country, category, and company levels, in addition to counseling on possible scenarios and the implications they have on demand,” added Mann.

11 Best Travel Insurance Companies in May 2024

Sean Cudahy

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

If the past few years have shown us anything, it’s that travelers need to be prepared for the unexpected — from a pandemic to flight troubles to the crowded airport terminals so many of us have encountered.

If you don't have sufficient travel insurance coverage via your credit card , you can supplement your policies with third-party plans.

Whether you’re looking for an international travel insurance plan, emergency medical care or a policy that includes extreme sports, these are the best travel insurance providers to get you covered.

How we found the best travel insurance

We looked at quotes from various companies for a 10-day trip to Mexico in September 2024. The traveler was a 55-year-old woman from Florida who spent $3,000 total on the trip, including airfare.

On average, the price of each company’s most basic coverage plan was $126.53. The costs displayed below do not include optional add-ons, such as Cancel For Any Reason coverage or pre-existing medical condition coverage.

Read our full analysis about the average cost of travel insurance so you can budget better for your next trip.

However, depending on the plan, you may be able to customize at an added cost.

As we continue to evaluate more travel insurance companies and receive fresh market data, this collection of best travel insurance companies is likely to change. See our full methodology for more details.

  • The standard plan covers up to $300,000 in emergency evacuation costs.
  • Plans automatically cover 200+ adventurous activities.
  • No Cancel For Any Reason upgrades are available.

Many travel insurance plans contain exclusions for adventure sports activities. If you plan to ski, bungee jump, windsurf or parasail, this might be a plan to consider.

Note that the Standard plan ($72 for our sample trip), while the most affordable, provides less coverage than other plans. But it can be a good choice for travelers who are satisfied with trip cancellation and interruption coverage of $2,500 or less, do not need rental car damage protection, find the limits to be sufficient and do not need coverage for certain more adventurous activities.

What else makes World Nomads great:

Comprehensive international travel insurance plans.

Coverage available for adventure activities, such as trekking, mountain biking and scuba diving.

Travelex’s plans focus heavily on providing protections that are personalized to your travel style and trip type.

While the company does offer comprehensive plans that include medical benefits, you can also choose between cheaper plans that don’t provide cancellation coverage but do offer protections during your travels.

  • In addition Cancel For Any Reason, some plans offer cancel for work reason coverage.
  • Adventure sports-specific coverage is available.
  • Plans have overlap that can be hard to distinguish.
  • Only one plan includes Rental Car Damage coverage available as an add-on.

Tin Leg’s Basic plan came in at $134 for our sample trip, adding about $8 onto the average basic policy cost. Note that you’ll pay a lot more if you shop for the most comprehensive coverage, and there are eight plans to choose from for trips abroad.

The multitude of plans can help you find coverage that fits your needs, but with so many to choose from, deciding can be daunting.

The only real way to figure out your ideal plan is to compare them all, look at the plan details and decide which features and coverage suit you and your travel style best.

As you shop for travel insurance, you’ll find many of the same coverage categories across numerous plans.

Trip cancellation

This covers the prepaid costs you make for your trip in cases when you need to cancel for a covered reason. This coverage helps you recoup upfront costs paid for flights and nonrefundable hotel reservations.

Trip interruption

Trip interruption benefits generally involve disruptions after you depart. It helps reimburse costs incurred for flight delays, cancellations and plenty of other covered disruptions you might encounter during your travels.

This coverage can cover the costs for you to return home or reimburse unexpected expenses like an extra hotel stay, meals and ground transportation.

Trip delay coverage helps cover unexpected costs when your trip is delayed. This is another coverage that helps offset the costs of flight trouble or other travel disruptions.

Note that many policies have a total amount a traveler can claim, with caps on per diem benefits, too.

Cancel For Any Reason

Cancel For Any Reason coverage allows you to recoup some of the upfront costs you paid for a trip even if you’re canceling for a reason not otherwise covered by your standard travel insurance policy.

Typically, adding this protection to your plan costs extra.

Baggage delay

This coverage helps cover the costs of essential items you might need when your luggage is delayed. Think toiletries, clothing and other immediate items you might need if your luggage didn’t make it on your flight.

Many travel insurance plans with baggage delay protection will specify how long (six, 12, 24 hours, etc.) your luggage must be delayed before you can make a claim.

Lost baggage

Used for travelers whose luggage is lost or stolen, this helps recoup the lost value of the items in your bag.

You’ll want to make sure you closely follow the correct procedures for your plan. Many plans include a maximum total amount you can claim under this coverage and a per-item cap.

Travel medical insurance

This covers out-of-pocket medical costs when travelers run into an emergency.

Because many travelers’ health insurance plans don’t cover medical care overseas, travel medical insurance can help offset out-of-pocket health care costs.

In addition to emergency medical coverage, many plans have medical evacuation or repatriation coverage for costs incurred when you must be taken to a hospital or return to your home country because of a medical situation.

Most travel insurance plans cover many trip protections that can help you be prepared for unexpected travel disruptions and expenses.

These coverages are generally aimed at protecting the money you put into your trip, expenses you incur because of travel trouble and costs incurred if you have a medical emergency overseas.

On top of core coverages like trip cancellation and interruption and travel medical coverage, some plans offer add-on options like waivers for pre-existing conditions, rental car collision damage waivers or adventure sports riders. These usually cost extra or must be added within a specified timeframe.

Typical travel insurance policies offer coverage for many unforeseen events, but as you research to select a plan, consider your needs. Though every plan differs, there are some commonly excluded coverages.

For instance, you typically can’t get coverage for a named storm if you bought the coverage after the storm was named. In other words, if you have a trip to the Caribbean booked for Sept. 25 and on Sept. 20 a hurricane develops and is named, you generally won’t be able to buy a travel insurance plan Sept. 21 in hopes of getting your money back.

Many plans also don’t cover activities performed under the influence of drugs or alcohol or any extreme sports. If the latter applies to you, you might want to consider a plan with specific coverages for adventure-seekers.

For numerous plans, a few other situations don’t qualify as an acceptable reason to cancel and make a claim, such as fear of travel, medical tourism or pregnancies (unless you booked a trip and bought insurance before you became pregnant or there are complications with the pregnancy). This is where a Cancel For Any Reason add-on to your coverage can be helpful.

You can also run into trouble if you give up on a trip too soon: a minor (or even multihour) flight delay likely isn’t sufficient to cancel your entire trip and get reimbursed through your plan. Be sure to review what requirements your specific plan has when it comes to canceling a trip, claiming trip interruption, etc.

Travel insurance costs vary widely. The final price of your plan will fluctuate based on your age, length of trip and destination.

It will also depend on how much coverage you need, whether you add on specialized policies (like Cancel For Any Reason or pre-existing conditions coverage), whether you plan to participate in extreme sports and other factors.

In our examples above, for instance, the 35-year-old traveler taking a $2,000 trip to Italy would have spent an average $76 for a basic plan to get coverage for things like trip cancellation and interruption, baggage protection, etc. That’s a little less than 4% of the total trip cost — lower than average.

If there were multiple members in a traveling party or if they were going on, say, a rock-climbing or bungee-jumping excursion, the costs would go up.

On average, travel insurance comes to about 5% to 10% of the trip cost. However, considering many of the plans reimburse up to 100% of the trip cost (or more) for disruptions like trip cancellation or interruption, it can be a worthwhile expense if something goes wrong.

It depends. Consider the following factors that might affect your decision: You’re young and healthy, all your bookings are refundable or cancelable without a penalty, your flights are nonstop, you’re not checking bags and a credit card you carry offers some travel protections . In that case, travel insurance might not be necessary.

On the other hand, if you prepaid a large chunk of money for a nonrefundable African safari, you’re going on a Caribbean cruise in the middle of a hurricane season or you’re going somewhere where the cost of health care is high, it’s not a bad idea to buy a travel insurance plan. Here’s how to find the best travel insurance coverage for you.

If you’re thinking of booking a trip and not planning to buy travel insurance, you may want to consider at least booking refundable airfare and not prepaying for hotel, rental car and activity reservations. That way, if something goes wrong, you can cancel without losing any money.

Selecting the best travel insurance policy comes down to your needs, concerns, preferences and budget.

As you book, take a few minutes to consider what most concerns you. Is it getting stranded because of flight trouble? Having the ability to cancel for any reason you see fit without losing money? Getting sick or injured right before departure and needing to postpone the trip? Injuring yourself or falling ill while overseas?

Ultimately, you want a plan that protects you, your money and the large investment in your trip — but doesn’t cost too much, either.

Medical coverage. If your priority is having adequate medical coverage abroad, you might want to look for plans with high limits for medical emergencies and medical evacuation.

Complex travel itinerary. If your itinerary has lots of flight connections, prepaid hotels and deposits for activities you can’t get back, prioritizing a plan with the best coverage for trip cancellations or interruptions may land at the top of your list.

Travel uncertainty. If you’re on the fence about a trip and have nonrefundable reservations, you may want to select a plan with a Cancel For Any Reason coverage option, which can help you recoup about 50% to 75% of the costs. This helps provide peace of mind, placing the decision on whether to travel entirely in your hands.

Car rentals. If you’re renting a car, a collision damage waiver is often worth looking into.

The following destinations are the top insured destinations in 2024, according to Squaremouth (a NerdWallet partner).

We used the following factors to choose insurance providers to highlight:

Breadth of coverage: We looked at how many plans each company offered plus the range of their standard plans.

Depth of coverage: We considered two data points to get a sense of how much each company pays out for common travel issues — the maximum caps for trip cancellation and trip interruption claims.

Cost: By looking at the costs for basic coverage across multiple companies, we determined an average cost for shoppers to benchmark plan prices against.

Customizability: While standard plans can cover a lot of ground, sometimes you need something a little more personal.

Customer satisfaction. Using data from Squaremouth when available, and Google Reviews as a backup, we can give kudos to companies with better track records from their clients.

No, it doesn’t necessarily get more expensive the longer you wait to purchase. However, as you put off buying insurance, you may lose access to potential plans and coverage options.

In general, buying travel insurance within a few days to two weeks of prepaying or making an initial deposit for your trip is your best bet. Assuming you’re not booking last-minute, this will provide you with access to the widest possible range of coverage options. It also helps prevent any medical conditions or storms that pop up between booking and buying a plan from ending up as excluded situations, which won’t be covered by your plan.

But, generally, many plans do allow you to buy coverage quite close to your departure date.

To get the most out of your travel insurance plan, buy it soon after making your initial prepayment or deposit to ensure you have access to the biggest menu of plans possible.

Select a plan that’s comprehensive enough to cover the travel scenarios you’re most concerned about or likely to encounter but not too expensive or laden with protections you’d never likely need.

Whatever your coverage, thoroughly review the plan so you understand what’s covered and what’s not, plus how to adhere to the plan’s rules for making a claim.

Travelers frequently use phrases like “trip insurance” and “travel insurance,” as well as “trip protection,” interchangeably, but they do mean different things, according to Stan Sandberg, founder of insurance comparison site TravelInsurance.com.

Trip insurance, or trip protection, generally refers to predeparture (or preevent) coverage if you need to cancel. You may see these plans sold by airlines, online travel agencies or even ticketed event sellers.

“You could refer to it as the portion that protects the investment in the trip,” Sandberg says.

A travel insurance plan typically includes that — plus more comprehensive benefits to protect you during your trip, from medical coverage to trip delay and lost baggage protections, and many more elements, depending on the plan.

Though travel insurance is typically not required for international trips, your personal circumstances will play a key role in whether it’s a good investment.

For instance, young, healthy travelers with few prepaid trip expenses embarking on a relatively risk-free trip may not see a need to buy a plan.

Older travelers with complicated itineraries who are visiting destinations where they could potentially fall ill or get injured — or who could encounter bad weather or some other disrupting factor along the way — may want to buy coverage.

Consider a few key questions:

How well would your health insurance plan cover you if you needed to visit a hospital overseas?

How much did you prepay for a hotel or rental car?

How much money would you be out if weather or some other flight issue derailed your itinerary?

Could you afford an unexpected night in a city where you have a connecting flight?

Do you already have a credit card that provides some travel protections?

Your answers to these questions can help you decide whether you need travel insurance for your international trip.

In general, buying travel insurance

within a few days to two weeks of prepaying or making an initial deposit

for your trip is your best bet. Assuming you’re not booking last-minute, this will provide you with access to the widest possible range of coverage options. It also helps prevent any medical conditions or storms that pop up between booking and buying a plan from ending up as excluded situations, which won’t be covered by your plan.

I flew on the best budget airline in the world for just $100, and it turned out to be one of the most comfortable flights I've ever traveled on

  • I flew AirAsia, a budget airline that's been crowned the world's best for more than a decade.
  • I paid $102 for a one-way ticket from Malaysia's capital Kuala Lumpur to Cebu in the Philippines.
  • While my flight was delayed, the tasty in-flight meal and cheap prices proved why the airline is so great.

AirAsia has been crowned the world's best low-cost airline for 14 years in a row, according to aviation ratings website Skytrax.

travel line asia

AirAsia is one of the most popular budget airlines in Southeast Asia — and for good reason. In 2022, some 25 million passengers flew the airline to over 160 destinations, including London, Mumbai, and Zagreb in Croatia .

The Malaysia-based airline is certified by Skytrax as a three-star low-cost airline . While Skytrax praised AirAsia for its in-flight service and wide range of meal options on board, the airline has had its fair share of criticism.

AirAsia received the most number of complaints among airlines in Malaysia from January to June 2022 , according to local news site MalayMail, citing the Malaysian Aviation Commission.

Passengers complained about poor service when checking in, not being refunded for canceled flights , and one traveler even claimed she found insects in her food, reported another local news site Malaysia Now.

There are over 20 budget airlines in Southeast Asia alone. As Insider's travel reporter in Singapore, I've traveled on many of them.

In the past year alone I've flown on AirAsia five times and despite a few small issues, it's remained my go-to airline when exploring the region.

Most recently, I flew AirAsia from Malaysia's capital city Kuala Lumpur to the island-province of Cebu in the Philippines in late June — and my experience with the airline showed me exactly why it's better than the rest.

My journey started in Kuala Lumpur International Airport's Terminal 2. Checking in was a nightmare.

travel line asia

KLIA 2 is the terminal dedicated to budget airlines, including AirAsia. I arrived at 7 a.m., over two hours before the scheduled departure time, but the snaking lines and complications with obtaining my boarding pass made check-in take forever.

AirAsia flights from Kuala Lumpur aren't checked in by destination. Passengers are often encouraged to check in online and drop off their bags at one of the counters.

When I arrived, there were already hundreds of people lining up at several counters. I joined one of these lines and waited for 20 minutes, but when I reached the counter, I was told to join another line as my e-ticket wouldn't scan.

After lining up for almost half an hour at the manual counter, I finally got my physical ticket and headed to immigration.

As the complaints hint, AirAsia isn't known for being punctual — my flight was rescheduled to depart 25 minutes late.

travel line asia

The flight to Cebu was scheduled to depart at 9:10 a.m. but was rescheduled to 9:25 a.m. I've flown AirAsia domestically across Malaysia and around the region of Southeast Asia, and nearly all my flights have been delayed for ast least 20 minutes or up to an hour.

As I ended up spending almost 40 minutes waiting for my turn to pass through immigration that day, the delay didn't end up being a big deal.

But delays are commonplace among low-cost airlines, and it's not an issue that's exclusive to AirAsia.

According to a 2023 survey by the Singapore finance site MoneySmart, many passengers who flew budget airlines from May 2022 to the same month this year often experience delays.

For example, some 69% of passengers indicated that they had flown on at least one delayed flight with the Philippines-based low-cost airline Cebu Pacific, the report said.

After going through immigration, my experience with the airline was nearly flawless. As I paid for a seat in the emergency row, I got to board first.

travel line asia

One of the best things about flying AirAsia is the affordable ticket prices. After paying for a seat with extra legroom — which allowed me to board first — and purchasing additional baggage, the cost of my one-way ticket was $102.

Boarding first is one of a few luxuries you can pay a bit extra for when flying low-cost airlines, and it's a perk that's well worth the extra cost. I didn't have to rush to get on the plane and fight for luggage space in the overhead cabins.

The extra leg room was $9, and additional baggage cost was around $23 for a 20-kilogram, or 44-pound allowance.

AirAsia is currently the only airline operating direct flights between Kuala Lumpur and Cebu.

Flying on budget airlines can feel cramped and uncomfortable. But this four-hour flight was surprisingly quiet and spacious, as there were few passengers on board.

travel line asia

Regular seats on AirAsia have 18 inches of legroom, but my seat on the emergency row measured 20.3 inches . As I'm only 5'1", it felt spacious enough.

The overall maintenance of the plane's interior was in good shape. The leather seats weren't peeling and there was no trash left in the compartments — unfortunate observations I've made on previous budget flights.

After everyone had boarded and empty seats could be spotted, a handful of passengers moved to the larger seats that cost more than the regular ones. They were promptly instructed to return to their assigned seats by the cabin crew.

Like with many budget airlines, the vibe on board was casual — many passengers stood in the aisle chatting with friends, while a handful were busy eating the meals they packed in their carry-on.

AirAsia is known for their great service, and the cabin crew were friendly and helpful.

travel line asia

The flight wasn't turbulent, so meals were served promptly. The flight attendants were efficient but personable — one of them took the time to play with one passenger's baby.

The same flight attendant also wiped down my tray table before serving my in-flight meal.

AirAsia's food selection among budget airlines in the region is unparalleled, with nine choices for hot meals on board.

travel line asia

I was impressed with AirAsia's food selection — aside from the cheap ticket cost, it's the best part of flying with the airline. Some of the meals available included Malaysian chicken rice, Thai basil chicken, and spicy Bukhara chicken biryani. Beverages, including bottled fruit tea and Vietnamese iced coffee, were sold too.

I found the food better than dishes served in business class on some national airlines around the region. For example, I paid 1,600 Singapore dollars, or $1,200, for a return business class ticket from Manila to Singapore on Philippine Airlines , and basic food like ice cream was unavailable.

I ordered nasi lemak and a bottle of calamansi oolong tea for 20 Malaysia ringgit, or $4.30, and it was one of the best meals I've ever had on a flight.

travel line asia

After spending two decades in Singapore, a country that shares many cuisines with Malaysia, I've become snobbish when it comes to nasi lemak — a coconut rice dish that comprises sambal, a sweet spicy sauce, anchovies, and meat.

But the nasi lemak on board was delicious. The sambal was hot and flavorful, and the chicken rendang — a dry stew with meat marinated in spices — had a delightful umami to it. The meal made me feel more like I was dining at my favorite hawker center than on a budget airline.

As there were no other passengers sitting beside me, I decided to take a nap — horizontally — which left me refreshed and ready to explore Cebu.

travel line asia

After observing several other passengers adjusting the armrests and lying down on the seats in the empty rows, I decided to follow suit. I used my backpack as a pillow, which wasn't ideal, but I still got some uninterrupted sleep.

The plane landed in Cebu around 15 minutes before its scheduled arrival time, which made up for some of the time lost with the delayed departure time.

Overall, I could see why AirAsia is the best budget airline in the world — but it's not without its flaws.

travel line asia

As I often travel on a budget, I frequently fly low-cost airlines — and so far, AirAsia has been the best one I've tried. The delicious in-flight meals and the super cheap ticket costs make the hassle of the long check-in lines worth it for me.

AirAsia also flies to so many destinations — even rare routes like Kuala Lumpur to Cebu — which makes it easy to explore different places at affordable prices. While the airline's reputation for delays might turn some people off, I am willing to wait it out — and always make sure I have a flexible schedule on the days I fly.
