Southern vs. Eastern Caribbean Cruise: What’s The Difference?

You know you want to sail to the Caribbean, but do you want to take a Southern or an Eastern Caribbean cruise?

When people think of a Caribbean cruise, Puerto Rico and Aruba typically come to mind. But it’s such a large area that most cruises don’t even scratch the surface of the dozens of cruise ports the region has to offer.

Disney Fantasy cruise ship

Here, we will take a closer look at the Southern and Eastern parts of the Caribbean — both the differences and similarities — in an effort to help you decide which is right for your upcoming cruise. (Trust us, you’re going to want to eventually hit both, so we’re really just helping you figure out which one to do first!)

Caribbean Cruise Departure Ports

old san juan puerto rico

Sailings to both the Eastern and Southern Caribbean depart from many of the same ports, including Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Port Canaveral in Florida, as well as Cape Liberty (New Jersey) and New York City.

To see as much of the Southern Caribbean as you can in seven nights, your best option is to sail from San Juan, Puerto Rico. You can also take a longer eight to 14-night cruise from Florida.

Caribbean Cruise Itineraries

Now that we’ve got departure ports squared away, let’s discuss the actual itineraries that you’ll find for each region.

Eastern Caribbean Sailings

ruby princess cruise ship

Eastern Caribbean voyages generally range in length from four to fourteen nights. This provides a wide variety of options, whether you just have a long weekend to get away or are looking for more of a bucket-list, two-week-long adventure.

Shorter Eastern Caribbean cruises often stop in destinations such as Grand Turk, the Dominican Republic, Key West, and the Bahamas. More often than not, they also include a stop at the private island or destination owned by the cruise line on which you’re sailing.

READ: Bermuda vs. Bahamas Cruises: What’s The Difference?

Seven-night voyages tend to call in some of these destinations: the Bahamas, Grand Turk, San Juan, St. Thomas, the Dominican Republic, St. Maarten, Antigua, and Tortola. Longer voyages have more flexibility and further reach, so ports can vary depending on factors like the cruise line and specific ship.

They include many of the same port stops as shorter cruises but with more calls in a single sailing.

Southern Caribbean Sailings

Southern Caribbean cruises range from five nights all the way up to 20+ night adventures. It’s important to mention that many (but not all) roundtrip cruises in the five to seven-night range depart from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Pointe-A-Pitre, Guadeloupe.

This is simply because those cities are already in the Caribbean; therefore, they are much closer to the ports and require less travel time.

So, if you’re looking for a standard week-long Southern Caribbean cruise, be prepared to fly to a port to board the ship.

If you’d prefer to save yourself from the hassle and expense of flying to the Caribbean, your best bet is to look at 10- to 12-night voyages departing from the mainland US, primarily Florida, although you’ll find the occasional sailings out of other areas, including New York City.

Common port calls on Southern Caribbean cruises include what is commonly referred to as “the ABC islands” (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao), St. Lucia, Barbados, St. Kitts and Nevis, Antigua, St. Maarten, Grenada, Martinique, St. Thomas, the Bahamas, Grand Turk, St. Croix, and the Dominican Republic.

Eastern vs. Southern Caribbean: Cruise Pricing

Eagle Beach in Aruba

When speaking in terms of price differences between the eastern and southern Caribbean, it’s only fair to compare based on price per night. If we didn’t , the eastern Caribbean would almost certainly win by default just because those voyages tend to be shorter on average than southern Caribbean ones.

Whenever you’re trying to determine which itineraries will give you the best bang for your buck, always sort by price per night on any cruise search tool if that’s an option, like the one found on Cruiseline.com .

To put it simply, cruise pricing is pretty comparable between the Eastern and Southern Caribbean. That being said, you’ll usually find a slightly larger variety of lower fares to choose from on Eastern itineraries.

For example, as of October 2020, there are 26 Eastern Caribbean cruises and 11 Southern Caribbean cruises that cost between $40 and $70 per person per day (not including taxes and fees).

colorful houses blue sea

That demonstrates there are great fares to be had on voyages through both regions, but you’ll find a larger variety of itineraries to choose from at lower prices in the Eastern Caribbean.

Just remember that most of the ports are different, and you’ll probably want to choose your cruise based on a lot of different factors — not just getting the absolute best deal.

The good news is that one-way cruises are not very common in the Caribbean, so nearly all of these voyages are roundtrip to and from the same home port — even the most affordable ones — which makes transportation to and from your vacation a bit easier.

Of course, there are exceptions to this and one-off cruises. For example, in the past, Carnival Cruise Line has sailed 14-night Carnival Journey voyages between San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Port Canaveral, Florida.

It’s also possible to find great deals on seven-night Southern Caribbean sailings from San Juan — just make sure you factor in the cost of airfare.

Caribbean Beaches

Maho Beach in St. Maarten

It’s the Caribbean, so of course, there are beaches to be found practically around every corner. However, you’ll soon learn that not all beaches are created equal and that some ports have a better array of sandy stretches. It can also depend on how far from the port you’re willing to explore.

Many people opt to head for the closest beach possible in order to maximize their relaxation time. But that also means you’ll be dealing with crowds since a lot of your fellow travelers will have the exact same thought.

Popular Southern Caribbean Beaches

Beach highlights in the Southern Caribbean include:

  • Palm Beach, Aruba
  • Crane Beach, Barbados
  • Playa Cas Abao, Curaçao
  • Grand Anse Beach, Grenada
  • Pinney’s Beach, Nevis
  • Cockleshell Bay Beach, St Kitts
  • Sandy Point Beach, St. Croix

Palm Beach on Aruba regularly tops “Best Beaches” lists not only in the Caribbean but around the world. The sand is “soft as talcum powder,” according to Frommer’s Travel Guides, as the hotels that line the beach rake the sand daily; head to the northern or southern reaches of the beach to avoid the crowds.

Playa Cas Abao on Curacao offers great snorkeling opportunities among the reefs, a more subdued atmosphere perfect for relaxing, and great amenities, including bathrooms, showers, and a bar with Wi-Fi.

Pinney’s Beach on Nevis is large — stretching about 4 miles — and is public, so there’s no cost to enter. Vendors on site will rent chairs and umbrellas, and an abundance of snack shacks ensures you won’t go hungry.

Popular Eastern Caribbean Beaches

trunk bay st. john

Beach highlights in the Eastern Caribbean include:

  • White Bay Beach, Jost Van Dyke
  • Trunk Bay, St. John
  • Maho Beach, St. Maarten
  • Governor’s Beach, Grand Turk
  • Lindquist Beach, St. Thomas

READ: Getting To Trunk Bay By Cruise Ship

White Bay Beach on Jost Van Dyke regularly makes the ‘best beaches’ lists. While Jost Van Dyke is typically only a direct stop on small luxury cruises, it’s a shore excursion option for other cruisers to visit from nearby Tortola.

In either case, you likely won’t be competing for space with 3,000 of your shipmates. Be sure to stop at the famous Soggy Bottom beach bar for a legendary Painkiller cocktail made with dark rum, cream of coconut, pineapple, and orange juice and topped off with grated Grenadian nutmeg.

Maho Beach white sand

Maho Beach, often called Airport Beach, sits at the end of the runway of St. Maarten’s Princess Juliana International Airport, offering jaw-dropping views of planes literally feet above your head as they come in for a landing.

There’s a beach bar with free wifi for customers, plenty of room to spread out, and, of course, the azure blue waters you expect to see in the Caribbean.

Things To Do

The twin pitons in St. Lucia

Southern Caribbean

Beyond some of the best beaches in the world, there’s plenty to keep you occupied in the Southern Caribbean. Must-see sites include Brimstone Hill Fortress in St. Kitts, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao) are hot spots for snorkeling and diving, and the tram tour of Harrison’s Cave in Barbados is a highlight for many. The Tet Paul Nature Trail in St. Lucia offers incredible views and the “stairway to heaven” for a one-of-a-kind look at the pitons.

Eastern Caribbean

The Eastern Caribbean has no shortage of things to do and sights to see. St. Thomas, one of the most popular Eastern Caribbean ports, is famous for duty-free shopping, but Blackbeard’s Castle, Coral World Ocean Park, and the Pirates Treasure Museum are also worth a visit.

Tortola offers options to visit the Baths of Virgin Gorda, charter a sailboat, or explore a tree canopy. In Puerto Rico, explore Old San Juan, discover El Morro, or tour the Bacardi Rum Factory (there are three tour options, and all include a welcome drink or samples).

Best Time to Visit

Fort James Beach in Antigua

In all of the Caribbean, generally, the best time to visit is over the winter, when the weather tends to be less stiflingly hot and humid.

Just be sure to avoid grade-school and college spring break weeks (typically March) unless you absolutely do not have a choice. Those holiday cruises will be substantially more crowded.

Even though it isn’t technically in the Caribbean, Eastern cruises often call on the Bahamas because of its close proximity to Florida ports.

The Bahamas and the surrounding cruise line private islands can get somewhat cool there in the winter — some Bahamian islands are actually slightly north of and parallel to Miami.

If you want hot weather and bath-temperature water throughout your whole cruise, you may want to head out on an Eastern Caribbean itinerary in the spring or fall months.

As for the Southern Caribbean, temperatures stay pretty hot all year round. Because of that, we highly recommend that you take a cruise there in the winter, as we mentioned — there will be lower humidity, but the water will still be warm and comfortable.

East, West or Southern Caribbean Cruise Routes

Planning a caribbean cruise.

When it comes to cruising the Caribbean, you may find yourself asking which route would be best for you? East, West or Southern?

A cruise to the Caribbean is the perfect way to see multiple islands in one trip, and you’ll only have to unpack once! The Caribbean Sea is also a great destination for first-time cruisers.

If you aren’t sure whether or not cruising is your thing, choose a short Caribbean cruise itinerary that will give you just a taste of what cruising is all about!

Caribbean Cruise Tips

Book a balcony stateroom .

Sometimes all you want is some quiet time to soak in the warm sun. The best place to relax in that scenario is on your own balcony, far from the busy outdoor lounge spaces and crowded poolside areas of the ship. It’s also an amazing experience to watch the sunset or sunrise alone in the peace and quiet of your own space.

Book Your Dining Reservations Early

Specialty restaurants fill up quickly so make sure to book your reservations in advance for any available entertainment and eateries. Make reservations early for meals because popular dinner times and many specialty restaurants book up quickly.

Venture Away From The Beaches

Relaxing on beaches is essential during any Caribbean cruise but make sure to also set aside some time to go on incredible excursions and explore other parts of the islands.

From hitting the hiking trails in search of amazing panoramic views, to swimming in waterfalls, to kayaking in lagoons and ziplining through jungles, there’s so much to experience while on a Caribbean cruise.

Pack Reef-Safe Sunscreen

Certain sunscreen chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate, especially in tourist hotspots like the Caribbean, might damage coral reefs. Avoid using products that contain such chemicals while you are in the water to help conserve the fragile reefs. Use sunscreens with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide instead, which are thought to be safe around coral reefs.

Cruise Route Options

One of the first topics we like to address when clients are beginning to plan a cruise to the Caribbean is choosing between regions: Eastern, Western or Southern Caribbean. Each region definitely has its own draw, and some longer cruises allow for a blend of destinations.

However, for this blog, we are going to focus on the highlights and benefits of each option.

If you are traveling from Canada to Florida to depart for your cruise, we suggest that you pick an itinerary length of at least 7-10 days. As Canadians, we do travel a fair distance to get to Florida, and the shorter 3-4 length itineraries can sometimes feel very rushed and like a bit of a ‘whirl·wind’ by the time you get back home.

In saying that, there are lots of destinations that cruisers can fit into a spacious ten-day itinerary.

east west or southern caribbean cruise

Eastern Caribbean Cruise Routes

Eastern Caribbean cruises can include:

  • Turks and Caicos
  • U.S. Virgin Islands
  • The British Virgin Islands
  • St. Kitts and Nevis
  • Puerto Rico
  • Dominican Republic

In the East, you will find a perfect blend of old and new world comforts. With influences from Europe, Latin America and Africa, these islands are alive with culture and traditions.

You will be in awe of the jaw-dropping beautiful white sandy beaches and turquoise waters that surround most of the islands with pristine coral reefs ready for snorkelers and divers alike.

Shopping is also a big draw in the East, with bustling ports such as St. Thomas, which has now become the unofficial ‘capital of duty-free shopping.

Most cruise lines offer multiple itineraries that focus solely on the Eastern Caribbean. Because of this, the islands are very equipt for tourism and activities.

east west or southern caribbean cruise

Western Caribbean Cruise Routes

Western Caribbean cruises can include:

  • Grand Cayman
  • Cayman Islands

Western Caribbean itineraries are amazing options if you are interested in Mayan Culture. Spend the morning exploring Mayan ruins tucked away deep within the jungle and later the same day snorkel and explore colorful reefs and delicious island cuisine!

Within the Western Caribbean are destinations such as Jamaica and Cozumel which are equipped with a wide range of eco-adventure activities. Inland activities such as hiking in the jungle and zip trekking are popular choices. Also plentiful are marine activity options, including Stingray City on Grand Cayman and the Blue Hole in Belize.

Since these ports are farther apart than those in Eastern Caribbean, you are typically at sea a few days longer, making the 7-10 day itineraries that much more appealing.

Most cruise lines offer Western-specific itineraries typically departing from Florida.

east west or southern caribbean cruise

Southern Caribbean Cruise Routes

Southern Caribbean cruises routes can include:

  • St. Maarten

In the Southern Caribbean islands, you get a chance to experience remote beauty. Diving deeper into the Caribbean you are able to spot pristine, uncrowded beaches and lush landscapes. Enjoy multiple national parks and rainbow-like coral reefs brimming with buzzing marine life.

This is the road less traveled, and because of that, itineraries from Florida start at ten days and go up to 20 days.

Many cruisers have found the South to be an ideal destination in the Caribbean due to its remote, exotic vibe. Our very own travel consultant,   Angela Brinkworth, suggests the Southern Medley from Princess Cruises as one of her all-time favorite routes.

The Best Time To Go On A Caribbean Cruise

The best months for a Caribbean cruise are December through April when you get warm weather, and bright, clear skies. This is the peak season for cruising in the Caribbean so expect potentially busy ships.

The Caribbean experiences hurricane season from June 1 to November 30. The entire region of the Caribbean is at risk during hurricane season, including popular embarkation ports like Fort Lauderdale and Port Canaveral.

Between mid-August and early November is when the hurricane season reaches its height, so stick to traveling to the Caribbean during high season if you’re worried about tropical storms.

Eastern Caribbean vs. Western Caribbean cruises: Which itinerary will I like more?

Sherri Eisenberg

Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean cruises may sound eerily similar when you start researching them. Just about wherever you go you've got your sunny days, your sandy shores, your sparkling seas and your balmy breezes causing the palm trees to sway like those on your favorite screen saver. But the reality is that Caribbean islands' personalities can vary as widely as those of regions of the United States.

In addition, it's important to remember that Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean are cruise ship route types, rather than literal descriptions of locations on a map.

So which Caribbean itinerary is your best choice? Read on for our evaluation on how to make the right choice for your next cruise.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter.

Embarkation ports

Typically, you can sail to the Eastern Caribbean from a variety of ports in Florida – Miami , Fort Lauderdale and Port Canaveral , the port on the coast near Orlando — as well as a few eastern seaboard ports, such as New York City. For Western Caribbean sailings, you can depart from Florida ports as well as Galveston, Texas, Mobile, Alabama and New Orleans, Lousiana.

So which embarkation port is best for you? There's no secret to it: whichever one you can get to the fastest and cheapest.

That said, if you see an itinerary that embarks in the Caribbean, know that you'll get a little extra time in the islands in exchange for that international flight. That's especially important when you're comparing it with itineraries that embark in the Northeast, where you'll have to sail the oft-rough seas of the Atlantic to get down to those pale blue Caribbean waters.

Itineraries

east west or southern caribbean cruise

Weeklong, round-trip cruises are common in both parts of the Caribbean, but you can also find shorter and longer options.

Common ports in the Eastern Caribbean include both big, crowded touristy options and some smaller, sleepier islands, which are typically only accessible by small ship or on shore excursions. Itineraries may travel to Grand Turk, St. Maarten, the U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix), the British Virgin Islands (Tortola, Jost Van Dyke and Virgin Gorda), San Juan, Puerto Rico and ports in the Bahamas — including the cruise lines' private islands, many of which received upgrades in the past few years. Small vessels may also call in Antigua, Anguilla and Dominica, as well as the tony island of St. Barts.

In the Western Caribbean, you may call on Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Honduras, Belize and Mexican ports such as Cozumel, Costa Maya and Progreso. Some of these ports – in the thick of a strong Caribbean cruise season – can be lined up with large cruise ships, which fill the port with as many as 15,000 passengers.

Beaches and water sports

If your fantasy is stretching out in the sun and splashing in the surf, you'll want to pick your Caribbean itinerary carefully so you can live the dream. When it comes to beaches, the Eastern Caribbean islands have the Western ones beat in most cases.

With just a short cab ride from the cruise port, you can escape the throngs and find a quiet sandy strand to call your own. After a few hours in the sun, you'll agree it was worth the effort, especially in Grand Turk and the Virgin Islands.

When it comes to water sports, some of the easiest opportunities to paddleboard, sail, kayak and parasail are available on the cruise lines' private islands, mainly located in the Bahamas. From Disney Cruise Line 's Castaway Cay to Holland America 's Half Moon Cay, Norwegian Cruise Line 's Harvest Caye and Great Stirrup Cay, Royal Caribbean 's Perfect Day at CocoCay and MSC Cruises ' Ocean Cay , you'll find more opportunities to get out on the water than you could take advantage of in a day.

Virgin Voyages ' Beach Club at Bimini is a more tranquil version of the "day at the beach" experience, since it is an adult-only cruise line, but there are still water sports to choose from – and a bonfire on the beach in the evening.

Shore excursions

east west or southern caribbean cruise

Where the Mexico ports of Cancun, Costa Maya and Progreso in the Western Caribbean have the others beat is in historical sites, especially when it comes to the spectacular pre-Colombian Mayan ruins in Chichén Itzá and Tulum.

Equally impressive, though a totally different experience, is a day spent snorkeling or diving around the reefs off the coasts of arid Grand Cayman (known for sea turtles and rays), Negril, Jamaica (known for underwater cliffs and unusually colorful coral) and the jungle port of Belize (where you may even get to see whale sharks).

In both the Eastern and Western Caribbean, you'll find ports that are designed for shopping, with a mix of luxury boutiques and knick-knack stores spread out around the cruise ship terminal.

In Nassau, Bahamas, the famous straw market sells everything from cheaply made souvenirs to local crafts, T-shirts and designer knock-offs. St. Thomas and Grand Cayman also offer a mix of jewelry shops and bric-a-brac, as well as duty free liquor stores offering rum tastings.

If you luck into an itinerary with St. Barts on the roster, you'll find small French-Caribbean boutiques full of chic resort wear and elegant sandals, as well as rum made with Tahitian vanilla beans.

Bottom line

east west or southern caribbean cruise

While every cruise line has its own personality and a type of traveler that would find it ideal, so does every itinerary. You'll want to choose your route carefully and research the individual islands to make sure you are picking not only a ship but also a sailing that plays to your preferences.

That said, our advice is that if you're a beach lover who is looking for peace amid the palm trees, then the Eastern Caribbean is the way to go. Those who sunburn easily and are looking for other entertainment than just the joy of their toes in the sand – including history buffs and divers — should consider the Western Caribbean their ideal choice.

Which cruise should I take: Western or Eastern Caribbean?

By Heidi Sarna

Cruiseline.com

Itineraries

Seven-night, year-round cruises are the most common option in both regions. Eastern routes sail from ports in Florida or from ports along the East Coast. Western itineraries sail from Florida or Texas, and sometimes New Orleans.

If you prefer visiting as many ports as possible, go for Eastern Caribbean sailings that depart from San Juan or St. Thomas — the time you would have spent sailing from Florida is made up by stopping at five or six islands. Western Caribbean routes, on the other hand, rarely stop at more than four ports.

Our Pick:  Draw. Different strokes for different folks. Western routes are best for history and nature, and Eastern ones rank high for beach hopping.

You’ll find good shores on both routes: Jamaica’s Negril and Grand Cayman’s Seven Mile Beach in the West, and too many to count in the Eastern Caribbean’s British and U.S. Virgin Islands, especially the perfect strips of white sand on Jost Van Dyke and St. John. The East’s tiny islands of St. Barts, Les Saintes, and Anguilla are also home to drop-dead gorgeous coastlines.

Our Pick:  Eastern. This is a close one, but we’re going with the Eastern Caribbean due to its quantity of gorgeous strands.

If you need more than sunbathing, shopping, and bar hopping, then the Eastern Caribbean itineraries might seem limiting to you. Yes, you can work up a sweat ziplining in St. Martin or kayaking off the coast of Tortola, but generally speaking, Eastern routes offer less to do beyond beaches and water sports.

Western Caribbean cruises are well rounded: In Mexico you can explore pre-Columbian temples or tube through underwater caves. Scuba dive off the shore of Grand Cayman where dramatic underwater cliffs attract abundant sea life, or try horseback riding through the surf in Jamaica, an island with a tradition of horse racing.

Our Pick:  Western. You can crawl around ancient ruins, go bobsledding, and tour coffee plantations — all on a one-week cruise.

Most children love anything to do with beaches — playing in the sand, riding waves, and taking banana boat rides.  Both Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries offer great coastlines.

The Western Caribbean, though, has more than great beaches: Mexico’s Mayan ruins, snorkeling and diving along the coast of Belize, and climbing near natural features like Jamaica’s Dunn’s River Falls. The Eastern Caribbean boasts a few outliers, including the awesome El Morro fortress in Old San Juan , but otherwise, the region is mostly about sand and shopping.

Our Pick:  Western. Among the water parks, rivers, and coral reef, these ports are ideal, especially for families traveling with active kids.

Both regions have downsides: The Western’s Grand Cayman can be a dud, as the port is canceled fairly frequently due to heavy winds and surf (ships anchor and shuttle passengers ashore via tender boats), and Jamaica is notorious for vendors with aggressive sales tactics. Meanwhile, St. Thomas and St. Martin on Eastern routes can see more than 10,000 cruise passengers in town at the same time, causing epic traffic jams.

Our Pick:  Western. The Western Caribbean is more of a smorgasbord than the Eastern, so our vote goes for variety.

Caribbean Cruise Itineraries

Southern, Eastern, and Western Trips

east west or southern caribbean cruise

Pola Damonte/Getty Images

The southern, eastern and western compass points in relation to the Caribbean reflect common cruise itineraries rather than any useful geographic designation.

Different cruise lines mix them differently, but generally speaking, a southern Caribbean cruise visits the Windward Islands of the Lesser Antilles or the Dutch islands of Aruba , Bonaire , and Curacao , while the eastern Caribbean includes the U.S. and British Virgin Islands , Puerto Rico, the Bahamas , Turks and Caicos , and Antigua . Western Caribbean itineraries tend to encompass the Mexican Caribbean and the Cayman Islands and may include stops in Jamaica, Belize, and Honduras.

Cruise Length

Eastern itineraries offer the shortest trips from the eastern United States, with three- and four-day cruises to Grand Turk or the Bahamas. Week-long cruises may include three or four ports of call in the Virgin Islands, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico.

Western itineraries likewise range in length from several days to more than a week but generally include more time at sea for travel between the more widespread islands in this part of the Caribbean. They also frequently include Mexico and occasionally Central American destinations as well.

Southern Caribbean cruises tend to be the longest, partly because these islands sit the farthest from the U.S. and partly because southern itineraries seem to stop at more ports of call. They often encompass both eastern itinerary destinations plus more southern ports such as Dominica, Martinique , and Grenada.

Cruise Activities

Though good snorkeling and diving exist throughout the Caribbean, the islands in the western cruise itineraries hold a slight edge with their locations closer to the Mesoamerican Reef.

The western Caribbean itineraries also tend to include more outdoor adventure, while eastern Caribbean destinations tend to focus more on a luxury experience with world-renowned shopping.

Cruises to the southern points let you experience the European flavor that remains from the French, British and Dutch colonial powers, while also enjoying a unique island style and nearly pristine scenery in the region with the fewest number of visitors.

Different cruise lines feature different types of onboard activities, but if you like the idea of recreation at sea, it makes sense to find a cruise with longer stretches between ports of call. Conversely, if you prefer daily shore excursions, an eastern itinerary makes the most sense for you.

Cruise Embarkation Locations

Eastern Caribbean cruises typically embark from the east coast of the U.S. in locations such as Baltimore, Maryland, Charleston, South Carolina, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami, Florida. Western itineraries often start from U.S. port cities on the Gulf of Mexico, such as Galveston and Houston, Texas; New Orleans; and Mobile, Alabama.

They may also embark from eastern locations such as Fort Lauderdale and Miami. Southern Caribbean itineraries usually start in Puerto Rico, Barbados or Miami, though depending on the cruise line, it's possible to find itineraries from any of these starting locations to destinations throughout the islands.

Cruise Tips for Families

Which Cruise Itinerary is Best for Your Family? Eastern vs Western vs Southern Caribbean Cruises

Last updated November 14, 2019

You’ve finally made the decision to treat yourself to a glorious Caribbean cruise but which itinerary is the best for your family?

Caribbean cruises can range from 3 to 10 days – sometimes more depending on the cruise line. It can be overwhelming picking one – especially if you’re a first-time cruiser.

To make it easy for you, we’re going to look at each region individually and explain the main differences between itineraries.

Each region differs primarily by the cruise departure point, the number of ports each cruise ship stops at and the different ports of call.

Eastern Caribbean

Eastern Caribbean cruises are ideally suited to travelers who are active and love exploring new places. In this region the ports of call are fairly close to each other so you can easily visit a different island every day .

In fact, you might be so busy exploring these fascinating islands, that you’ll need a relaxing holiday after you get home! Ports of call on Eastern Caribbean cruises are some of the most popular ports so it’s not unusual to see 3 or more ships on the same day.

Things to do with Kids in St Thomas - Caribbean Cruise

These cruises generally depart from ports in Florida or from San Juan in Puerto Rico.

Ports of call can include Grand Turk, San Juan, St. Maarten , St. Thomas , Haiti, the Virgin Islands and the Bahamas .

Islands like St. Thomas and St. Maarten  offer some of the best duty free shopping and beautiful white sandy beaches.

If you’re looking for a bit more adventure, you can enjoy the Reef Snorkel and Stingray Safari on Grand Turk. Not only can you snorkel on a private reef just off the coast but you can also hold and play with wild Atlantic stingrays in shallow crystal clear waters.

For a more relaxing day, how about a catamaran sail, snorkel and beach tour from St. Thomas ? These half day tours take you out to St. John – a neighboring US Virgin Island. Here you can swim and snorkel with turtles or relax on the beach with a cooling drink.

Western Caribbean

A cruise around the Western Caribbean is a popular pick for first-time cruisers. Those looking for a more relaxing vacation may find it on a Western Caribbean cruise. There’s also a more diverse selection of travel experiences. This area is best known for their water sports but the Western Caribbean also provides plenty of opportunities for cruisers to experience the rich culture and history of the Caribbean.

Western Caribbean cruises are more budget friendly as well. Due to the distance between ports, you’ll easily enjoy around 2 full days at sea where you can relax and enjoy some of the onboard activities.

Kid Friendly Beaches in Grand Cayman - see the starfish at Starfish Point

These cruises typically depart from ports in Florida – Fort Lauderdale , Tampa, Miami or Port Canaveral . Other departure ports include Texas and New Orleans.

They will generally make between 3 and 4 stops on a 7 day cruise. You can expect to spend anywhere from 8 to 24 hours in each port.

Ports of call can include Cozumel , Grand Cayman , Mexico’s Mayan coast, Jamaica, Belize and sometimes the Bahamas.

Western Caribbean cruises are also ideal for outdoor adventure seekers as some of these ports have some excellent tours which you can take. Grand Cayman is well renowned for its excellent snorkeling so its a great place to enjoy some underwater discovery.

For history buffs, a visit to the Mayan ruins in Mexico is an absolute must but if you’re looking for some thrills, how about a zip line ride through the jungle in  Cozumel .

And if you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at Jamaican bobsledding, you’re in for a treat if you visit Montego Bay or Falmouth in Jamaica. Here you can ride a Jamaican bobsled through the rainforest. But first you have to hike up a waterfall to get to the top!

Water shoes are a must for families cruising in this part of the Caribbean.

Southern Caribbean

Southern Caribbean cruises are usually a little longer than 7 days as the distance between ports is a greater. These cruises are ideal for travelers who like to explore different destinations and those who enjoy some history. A lot of the ports of call on Southern Caribbean cruises have a distinct European charm.

Eastern vs Western vs Southern Caribbean Cruises - Which to Choose

Southern Caribbean cruises usually depart from San Juan, Panama and Barbados. Longer cruises can depart from ports in Florida.

Port stops can include St. Lucia, Martinique, Aruba, Barbados, Bonaire, Grenada, Curacao, Antigua, Guadalupe, Margarita Island and St. Kitts.

Several ports of call have an interesting colonial history which is evident as you walk through the streets and admire the architecture and history.

Nature lovers will enjoy scuba diving in Bonaire or visiting the impressive volcanic Pitons of St. Lucia.

One of the highlights of some Southern Caribbean cruises is the trip up the Panama Canal . The Canal itself is referred to as ‘one of the seven wonders of the modern world’ and is definitely something not to be missed. Experience the unique sensation of traveling through its twelve locks which operate simply by gravity.

So whether you just want to sit back and spend a few days on a relaxing cruise around the Western Caribbean or keep yourself busy island hopping on an Eastern Caribbean cruise, there’s definitely an itinerary to suit everyone. If you can plan a slightly longer cruise however, then a Caribbean cruise around the southern region including a trip up the Panama Canal is something you should strongly consider.

Great Weather Year Round

The Eastern and Western Caribbean boast great weather year-round, making them both ideal places to escape the cold winter months.

The average temperature in the Caribbean ranges from 75-85 degrees Fahrenheit, with humidity levels hovering around 70%. Humidity rises during hurricane season and falls around January to April. However, it is important to note that the trade winds blowing across the islands can help to keep things cool, especially in the evenings.

Hurricane Season

Visitors should also be aware that hurricanes are a possibility in both the east and west during the hurricane season (June-November). As long as you are prepared for some inclement weather and have a backup plan, both regions make for great vacation getaways.

There are with a higher hurricane risk and options like a lower hurricane risk, Turks and Caicos vs Aruba , for example. Where Aruba is farther from the hurricane belt and less likely to experience rains and heavy hurricane weather, and Turks and Caicos the opposite.

Beaches and Activities

From beautiful weather and beaches to a wide range of activities and excursions, it’s easy to customize your perfect Caribbean vacation. Both the eastern and western Caribbean Islands offer a wide range of activities and excursions for visitors to enjoy.

Popular activities include hiking through rainforests, zip-lining through jungles, taking 4×4/ ATV tours through mountainous terrain, visiting sugar plantations or rum factories, exploring caves and waterfalls, and much more.

No matter what type of activity you’re interested in, both regions have plenty to offer. There are also numerous excursions available that allow you to experience multiple activities in one day or even one week.

There is no wrong choice when it comes to deciding between an eastern or western itinerary. Both options have an abundance of hidden gems in the Caribbean to explore.

Each region offers stunning weather, beautiful beaches, and plenty of activities and excursions to keep you busy, or plenty of relaxing spots to hang if you’re looking for that “island-time” vacation.

Eastern vs Western Caribbean Islands Differences

The main differences to consider before planning a Caribbean vacation: Eastern Caribbean islands tend to be more developed and have more popular beaches, whereas Western Caribbean islands are less developed but the still breathtaking beaches will likely be less crowded.

Choose Your Vacation: St Croix vs St John

Eastern Caribbean Islands are More Developed

The eastern Caribbean islands tend to be more developed, with more resorts and restaurants to choose from. This also means they may tend to be more crowded than the western islands.

The Eastern Caribbean islands offer some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, like Trunk Bay and Honeymoon Beach in St John, USVI or Magens Bay and Coki Beach in St Thomas . The beaches on the western islands are also typically less crowded than those on the eastern islands. If you’re looking for a more active vacation with plenty of opportunities for adventure and history, the western islands may be a better choice.

Is Eastern or Western Caribbean Better for a Cruise?

Cruise ship in the Western Caribbean islands

This really depends on preference when deciding between an eastern or western Caribbean cruise.

For an Eastern Caribbean Cruise, you’ll spend a bit more time on the water to get to your destinations, and then be able to quickly hop around the eastern islands since they are very close to each other.

Western Caribbean islands are more spread out, so you’ll spend more time on the ship traveling between islands. My last 5 night, 6 day western Caribbean cruise had only two days at ports!

If you want to spend lots of time on the white sandy beaches and shopping through the downtown areas, you’ll want to choose an Eastern Caribbean cruise.

If you want to hop off the ship and go on an outdoor adventure and explore the deep waters, head to the Western Caribbean. You’ll find similar notes in any Eastern vs Western Caribbean cruise Reddit thread.

⭐ Is the Eastern or Western Caribbean better for a cruise? Only you can answer that, really. Eastern for quick hops through many islands, Western for longer trip through the Caribbean seas. Each can offer such difference experiences, though you can’t go wrong with either.

Eastern Caribbean Cruise Itinerary

Puerto Rico historic view in Eastern Caribbean

A common eastern Caribbean itinerary includes Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, St Maarten, and British Virgin Islands. Each of these islands has something unique to offer visitors.

Puerto Rico is a great place to experience traditional Spanish culture. The US Virgin Islands offer beautiful beaches and stunning scenery. The popular French West Indies territory St Maarten is a perfect destination for those who love to shop. And the British Virgin Islands are known for their laid-back atmosphere and stunning natural beauty.

Whether you’re looking for culture, relaxation, or adventure, an eastern Caribbean cruise is sure to have something for you.

Western Caribbean Cruise Itinerary

Western Caribbean cruises offer a wonderful opportunity to explore some of the world’s most beautiful and exotic locations. The itinerary typically includes stops in Grand Cayman , Grand Turk or Bahamas , Curacao , Aruba , Jamaica , as well as sometimes Central American ports such as Belize City and Roatan. Roatan is a diving haven of the Caribbean.

You’ll also see more sharks on the western side, specifically in the Bahamas, so these are great places to go diving.

Each of these destinations offers its own unique attractions and activities, so there is something for everyone to enjoy. Western Caribbean cruises are the perfect way to experience everything that this region has to offer.

Eastern vs Western Caribbean Islands: Which is Nicer?

Turks Grace Bay Club

While both types of islands have their own unique charms, Eastern islands generally offer a more developed infrastructure, more dining and shopping options, and world-class beaches.

For example, the Eastern island of St. Lucia boasts dozens of high-end restaurants, an array of luxury hotels, and a vibrant nightlife scene. You can go on full-day island Land and Sea tours and snorkel tours in St Lucia . By contrast, the Western island of Jamaica is more laid-back, with a focus on Rastafarian culture and reggae music.

So if you’re looking for a more traditional Caribbean experience, the Western islands may be more your speed. But if you’re looking for sophistication and luxury, you’ll find it in the East.

⭐ Western vs Eastern Caribbean : which islands are nicer? Eastern Caribbean Islands

Eastern vs Western Caribbean Islands: Which is Cheaper?

The Western Caribbean islands are known as being a bit cheaper, particularly in terms of cruise options. However, there are so many different regions and options in both the eastern and western Caribbean islands, it’s possible to make either work on many different budgets, so don’t box yourself into one because of price!

The cost will also depend where you want to leave from, as airfare may become the most expensive cost of your trip!

⭐ Eastern vs Western Caribbean islands: Which is cheaper? You can budget for either! Western Caribbean islands are usually cheaper than Eastern, and a popular option for first time cruisers and Caribbean vacationers.

Eastern vs Western Caribbean Islands: Who has Better Beaches?

Blue Water and Green Mountains of Trunk Bay St John in Eastern Caribbean

⭐ Does the Eastern or Western Caribbean have better beaches? Eastern beaches are more popular and known for their famous, picturesque features. Western beaches may be less crowded. Eastern Caribbean Islands have to take this one.

More on St John: Is St John Worth Visiting?

Eastern vs Western Caribbean Islands: Best for Families?

Generally speaking, the eastern Caribbean islands tend to be more developed, with more Resort hotels and all-inclusive options making it ideal if you’re looking for a relaxing vacation where most of the details are taken care of in advance.

The western Caribbean islands, on the other hand, tend to be less developed and offer more opportunities for exploring and adventure. If your family enjoys spending time outdoors, then the western Caribbean islands may be a better fit. Whichever destination you choose, the Caribbean is sure to provide your family with lasting memories.

They both hold a wide variety of history if you want to learn about the culture of the islands with your family, and they both offer a wide variety of family-friendly excursions, hotels, activities, and beaches. Your sure to find exactly what your family is looking on either side of the Caribbean!

⭐Eastern vs Western Caribbean islands: Which is better for families? Both Eastern and Western Caribbean Islands offer great family opportunities and activities.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

When and where the solar eclipse will be crossing the U.S.

The path of totality for the solar eclipse on April 8, 2024.

A total solar eclipse will grace the skies over North America on Monday, one of the most hotly anticipated sky-watching events in recent years.

Weather permitting , millions of people in Mexico, 15 U.S. states and eastern Canada will have the chance to see the moon slip between Earth and sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s light .

The total solar eclipse will be visible along a “path of totality” that measures more than 100 miles wide and extends across the continent. Along that path, the moon will fully obscure the sun, causing afternoon skies to darken for a few minutes.

Follow live updates on the solar eclipse

In all other parts of the continental U.S., a partial solar eclipse will be visible, with the moon appearing to take a bite out of the sun. Exactly how big a bite depends on the location.

The first spot in North America that will experience totality on Monday is on Mexico’s Pacific coast at around 11:07 a.m. PT, according to NASA .

After moving northeast across Mexico, the eclipse’s path travels through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Slivers of Michigan and Tennessee will also be able to witness totality if conditions are clear.

In Canada, the eclipse will be visible in parts of southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, at the eastern end of Nova Scotia.

The timing of the eclipse and the duration of totality varies by location. Most places will experience around 2 minutes of darkness, but the longest periods of totality are typically in the center of the eclipse’s path.

This year, the longest stretch of totality will last 4 minutes and 28 seconds in an area northwest of Torreón, Mexico.

The moon covers the sun during a total solar eclipse in Cerulean, Ky.

Below is a list of timings for some U.S. cities along the path of totality, according to NASA .

  • Dallas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:23 p.m. CT and totality at 1:40 p.m. CT.
  • Idabel, Oklahoma: Partial eclipse begins at 12:28 p.m. CT and totality at 1:45 p.m. CT.
  • Little Rock, Arkansas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:33 p.m. CT and totality at 1:51 p.m. CT.
  • Poplar Bluff, Missouri: Partial eclipse begins at 12:39 p.m. CT and totality at 1:56 p.m. CT.
  • Paducah, Kentucky: Partial eclipse begins at 12:42 p.m. CT and totality at 2:00 p.m. CT.
  • Carbondale, Illinois: Partial eclipse begins at 12:42 p.m. CT and totality at 1:59 p.m. CT.
  • Evansville, Indiana: Partial eclipse begins at 12:45 p.m. CT and totality at 2:02 p.m. CT.
  • Cleveland: Partial eclipse begins at 1:59 p.m. ET and totality at 3:13 p.m.
  • Erie, Pennsylvania: Partial eclipse begins at 2:02 p.m. ET and totality at 3:16 p.m. ET.
  • Buffalo, New York: Partial eclipse begins at 2:04 p.m. ET and totality at 3:18 p.m.
  • Burlington, Vermont: Partial eclipse begins at 2:14 p.m. ET and totality at 3:26 p.m. ET.
  • Lancaster, New Hampshire: Partial eclipse begins at 2:16 p.m. ET and totality at 3:27 p.m.
  • Caribou, Maine: Partial eclipse begins at 2:22 p.m. ET and totality at 3:32 p.m. ET.

Other resources can also help you figure out when the various phases of the eclipse will be visible where you live, including NationalEclipse.com and TimeandDate.com .

If you plan to watch the celestial event, remember that it’s never safe to look directly at the sun, including through binoculars, telescopes or camera lenses. Special eclipse glasses are required to safely view solar eclipses and prevent permanent eye damage.

6 Best Cruises Out Of Port Canaveral

By Zachary Laks | Published on April 9, 2024

It's time to start planning your next big vacation. Whether you're looking for a weekend getaway, a family-friendly vacation or an extended voyage, you'll find cruises out of Port Canaveral, Florida that tick all your boxes.

When considering one of the cruises out of Port Canaveral, plan extra time before and after your sailing to soak up all the fun that the area has to offer. There's so much to do in Orlando that you could stay for several days and never get bored — music to your ears if you're traveling with children. One of the best things about Orlando cruises is that you have your choice of theme parks to round out your vacation. They're expansive and immersive escapes into playful worlds, not unlike a great cruise. I love tacking on an extra day or two at an Orlando theme park, usually before my cruise departs. I always appreciate the days of racking up thousands of steps traversing a theme park before boarding a cruise, where I know I'll be able to lounge on a deck or relax in a hot tub.

Not far from Port Canaveral, the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is a great place to spend a day admiring the vast scope of NASA. The center offers one-of-a-kind immersion into space exploration, including the chance to strap into a rocket launch simulator for an adrenaline-pumping thrill.

For those seeking a more peaceful retreat before boarding their cruises out of Orlando, Port Canaveral is near the white sands of Cocoa Beach. Spend the day enjoying calm, low waves — great for year-round swimming, learning to surf and kayaking alongside manatees and dolphins. Or take a seat on an airboat ride through the wetlands for encounters with alligators and, depending on the season, bald eagles, herons and osprey.

Ready to book a cruise to Port Canaveral? Here are the six best cruises from Port Canaveral.

Serene Clear Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral, Florida

1. Best For A Long Weekend

Coco Beach Club Beach Cabanas Mom and Daughter Tanning, Perfect Day at Coco Cay

Set to launch in the summer of 2024, Utopia of the Seas ℠ will be the sixth Oasis Class ship, Royal Caribbean's class of ships packed with adventure and entertainment. The new ship will focus on three- and four-night cruises from its year-round home port in Port Canaveral, with onboard upgrades that include reimagined pool decks, a Giovanni's℠ Italian Kitchen that spans two decks (try the osso buco!) and the new Pesky Parrot tiki bar, serving fruity cocktails on the Royal Promenade. This itinerary  to the Bahamas on Utopia of the Seas ℠ is the best for a long weekend exploring the highlights of The Bahamas, with a day in Nassau followed by a day at Perfect Day at CocoCay , Royal Caribbean's private island destination.

2. Best For Beach Lovers

Colorful buildings along the coast, Willemstad, Curacao

This exquisite itinerary to the Southern Caribbean on Adventure of the Seas ® routes you to the farthest corner of the Caribbean for some of its best beaches. Sailing on the Adventure of the Seas ® for eight nights from Port Canaveral, you'll stop in ports such as Oranjestad, Aruba; Willemstad, Curaçao; and Kralendijk, Bonaire. Each port will welcome you with easily accessible, powdery sand beaches primed for world-class swimming, snorkeling and diving. You'll have your pick of 86 dive sites at Bonaire National Marine Park with more than 350 recorded fish species known to frequent the waters.

3. Best For A European Adventure

Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Boats Docked

Transatlantic sailings make for such a special vacation, and this 13-night Transatlantic Azores itinerary on Adventure of the Seas ® packs four remarkable ports into the crossing. You'll cruise the Atlantic for the first nine days, living it up on a ship that is packed with ways to play and relax. You'll arrive in idyllic Tenerife in the Canary Islands on the tenth day. Immerse yourself in the local Spanish culture by spending part of your day exploring the Museum of Nature and Archaeology or the Basilica de Candelaria shrine. The cruise continues to Lanzarote, Canary Islands, where picture-perfect colonial mansions line cobblestone streets, then on to the adventurous mountain island of Madeira, Portugal before completing your journey in the charming streets of Lisbon, Portugal.

4. Best For Private Island Getaways

Hamilton, Bermuda Horseshoe Bay

This unique Port Canaveral cruise itinerary  to Bermuda and Perfect Day at CocoCay on Adventure of the Seas ® visits both of Royal Caribbean's private destinations, where paradise is just steps away from the ship. On an eight-night journey, this ship will first cruise to Labadee, the cruise line's private peninsula adventure park and beach. Soak up this private spot by relaxing on the beach, enjoy the destination's signature cocktail specialty, the Labadoozie (a fruity rum cocktail) or opt for a zip line ride that will send you soaring over the ocean. The next private island destination is Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean's oasis in The Bahamas. Here you'll port within short distance of pristine beaches, a thrilling water park and countless ways to unwind beneath the palm trees. There's also a stop in Bermuda, home to pink-sand beaches and rum swizzles.

5. Best For Foodies

Authentic Cozumel Shrimp Tacos

Foodies will delight in fresh, authentic Caribbean dishes on this itinerary to the Western Caribbean and Perfect Day at CocoCay on Wonder of the Seas ® . In Cozumel, Mexico you'll find lunch specialties featuring locally caught seafood, often grouper and red snapper fried on a plate with rice and a vibrant salad. In Roatán, Honduras, ceviche is the local favorite, along with fried plantains and baleadas — tacos made with soft flour tortillas. The ship's final port is Puerto Costa Maya, Mexico, a charming fishing village where the salbutes  (fried corn tortillas topped with shredded chicken) make a great appetizer to the catch of the day, served hot off the grill.

6. Best For Variety

Aruba ATV Off Road Track, Oranjestad, Aruba

This seven-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary  on Wonder of the Seas ® is a top choice if you want to change things up and go on a unique adventure in each port. Your first destination is Philipsburg, St. Maarten, where you can tour the island on an ATV, sample rum from a local distillery or end the day with a sunset horseback ride on the beach. When the ship arrives in the U.S. Virgin Islands at Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, head straight to Magens Bay, often short-listed as one of the world's most beautiful beaches. Or dive into a snorkeling tour to get face time with some sea turtles and coral reefs. On your final stop, Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay, everyone in your group can enjoy a seemingly endless array of activities. If the beach is calling, grab a spot on one of the many cushy beach loungers close to a bar serving up island cocktails that go great with the ocean view. For the adventurous ones, Daredevil's Peak® waterslide is North America's tallest and promises an adrenaline rush.

Encompassing ports of paradise and incredible culture, Orlando cruises are the ideal vacation getaway. Start planning your island escape from Port Canaveral now .

Middle East latest: US predicts attack by Iran against Israel - as Iranian sources 'brief Washington officials on nature of response'

Washington officials expect Iran to attack Israel in retaliation to a strike on its embassy in Syria - as the US says it will not be drawn into any wider war and Tehran suggests its response will be non-escalatory. Listen to our latest podcast on how tensions are escalating in the region.

  • Live reporting by Niamh Lynch

Israeli forces have shot dead two Palestinians, including a member of the armed wing of Hamas, near Tubas in the occupied West Bank on Friday following a raid on the town earlier in the morning, the military said.

It said Mohammad Omar Daraghmeh, whom it described as the head of Hamas infrastructure in the Tubas area of the Jordan Valley, was killed during an exchange of fire with security forces.

Hamas confirmed Daraghmeh's death and his membership of its armed al Qassem Brigades.

The Palestinian news agency WAFA said another man was killed by Israeli forces conducting a raid in the al Fara refugee camp in Tubas.

Hamas said it mourned the man's death but did not claim him as a member.

The Israeli military said the first humanitarian aid trucks entered through a newly opened northern crossing point on Thursday.

Israel said the trucks were inspected at the Kerem Shalom crossing point on the border with Egypt before moving north to cross.

Israel had said earlier this month it would re-open the Erez crossing point that had been closed since the start of the war with Hamas last October.

The country has said it would step up supplies in the face of mounting pressure to ease the humanitarian crisis in Gaza

Israel is preparing for a "direct" attack from Iran as soon as today or Saturday, it is being reported.

US news outlet the Wall Street Journal cited a person "familiar with the matter". However, the newspaper said a source briefed by the Iranian leadership said that while plans were being discussed, no final decision on the attack has been made.

It also reported that the attack could be within Israel's borders, as opposed to Israeli interests elsewhere.

Iran has vowed to avenge last week's strike on its embassy in Damascus, Syria, which killed top Iranian military officials - although it is reported to have made clear to US officials that any response will be non-escalatory.

France's foreign ministry has issued a recommendation for French citizens not to travel to Iran, Lebanon, Israel or the Palestinian Territories.

The ministry said it was also bringing back the relatives of Iran-based diplomats and that French civil servants were now banned from conducting any missions in Iran, Lebanon, Israel and the Palestinian Territories.

For context: Tensions have ratcheted up in region - which is already strained by the Gaza war - in the wake of an attack last week on the Iranian embassy in Syria.

The airstrike on 1 April in Damascus killed a top Iranian general and six other Iranian military officers.

Israel has not claimed responsibility for the attack, but Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Wednesday that Israel "must be punished and it shall be", adding that it was tantamount to an attack on Iranian soil.

Elsewhere, Argentina's highest criminal court has found that Iran planned the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community centre headquarters in Buenos Aires.

It also concluded that Lebanon’s Hezbollah group then carried out the attack, which killed 85 people and wounded 300.

Argentina's Court of Cassation said the attack came in retaliation for Argentina reneging on a nuclear cooperation deal with Tehran.

Alleging Iran's "political and strategic" role in the bombing, the court paved the way for victims' families to bring lawsuits against the country.

In the past three decades, Iran has not turned over citizens convicted in Argentina.

Sky's international affairs editor Dominic Waghorn explains how Iran may retaliate after Israel hit the country's embassy in Syria last week.

Tensions in the Middle East have been growing since the deadly Damascus attack, which killed a top Iranian military general.

An update from the Gaza health ministry this morning.

At least 33,634 Palestinians have been killed and 76,214 injured in Israel's military offensive in Gaza since 7 October, the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory has said today.

In the past 24 hours, 89 Palestinians were killed and 120 were injured, the ministry added.

The ministry's figures do not differentiate between civilians and fighters, but it says the majority of those killed were women and children.

The White House has appeared to row back on comments made by the head of a significant US aid agency on famine in Gaza.

Samantha Power, the administrator of the US Agency for International Development, said it was "credible" to assess that famine had already started there.

But White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre insisted repeatedly on Thursday that famine conditions in parts of Gaza were only "imminent".

"That is why we're doing everything we can to uptick, obviously, the humanitarian aid" arriving into Gaza, Ms Jean-Pierre said, noting that the number of trucks carrying aid into Gaza has increased dramatically in recent days.

"We know how dire the situation is in Gaza, so we are certainly deeply concerned about these reports," Jean-Pierre said.

"We have been working around the clock to get more of that aid into Gaza."

She added that the US would "continue to push Israel to increase the flow" of aid.

Under US pressure, Israel has promised to ramp up aid to Gaza dramatically, saying last week it would open another cargo crossing and surge more trucks than ever before into the besieged Palestinian territory.

But days later, there are few signs of those promises materialising and international officials say starvation is widespread in hard-hit northern Gaza.

Israel says it has dramatically increased the number of aid trucks entering the territory, but UN workers report only a slight uptick.

A likely retaliatory attack on Israel will be calculated with the aim of avoiding major escalation, Iranian sources have told Reuters news agency.

They say this was communicated to the US and that Iran will not act hastily.

Iran has been threatening a response for the suspected Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, which killed a top Iranian commander.

Iran's message to Washington was conveyed by Iranian foreign minister Hossein Amirabdollahian during a visit on Sunday to the Gulf Arab state of Oman, which has often acted as an intermediary between Tehran and Washington, the sources said.

A White House spokesperson declined to comment on any messages from Iran, although they said the US has told Iran it was not involved in the strike on the consulate.

A source familiar with US intelligence was not aware of the message conveyed via Oman but said Iran has "been very clear" that its response to the attack in Damascus would be "controlled" and "non-escalatory".

They added Iran planned "to use regional proxies to launch a number of attacks on Israel".

Iran has been considering its response for close to two weeks now as it appears it does not want a wider war in the Middle East.

The country's foreign ministry has urged citizens to avoid travel to the Middle East as fears of escalation rise.

In particular, it told people to keep away from Israel, Lebanon and the Palestinian territories.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov also joined the UK in calling for Iran to show restraint ahead of a likely retaliation against Israel.

"Right now it's very important for everyone to maintain restraint so as not to lead to a complete destabilisation of the situation in the region, which doesn't exactly shine with stability and predictability," Mr Peskov said.
