What happens when you gaze at yourself in a muddled puddle of self-reflection? For filmmaking duo Bill and Turner Ross, it’s all about turning the camera inward to look outward, courtesy of the cinema verité style.

The Ross Brothers’ latest feature , “ Gasoline Rainbow ,” follows five teenagers from small-town Oregon as they embark on one final adventure together after high school: reaching the Pacific coast, 500 miles away. Along the way, the group encounters outsiders from the fringes of the American West and discovers that the contours of their lives will be set by trails they blaze themselves. They are forgotten kids from a forgotten town, but they have their freedom and they have each other, hurtling toward an unknowable future — and The Party at the End of the World.

The Ross Brothers, whose previous features include festival favorites “Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets” and “Contemporary Color,” described “Gasoline Rainbow” as a “punk rock” version of “The Wizard of Oz” meets “Easy Rider” in a directors’ statement.

“This is not a documentary but it is very sincere,” Turner Ross said. “We found if you give people a mask, then they actually share more than they would if we were just asking them to be themselves.”

The directors created scenarios in which an improvisational self-portrait of a generation could flourish.

Turner Ross added to IndieWire upon the film ‘s Venice premiere, “The documentary community — the non-fiction community — has really been kind to us. But the modes with which we operate are not part of the code around how journalistic documentary works. We look at this as a creative endeavor. We’re making movies. This is art for us. To get to the most honest place has meant dealing with honest people in honest situations, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t be constructed.”

“Gasoline Rainbow” premieres in select theaters May 10 and will be available to stream on Mubi May 31. Check out the trailer below and read the IndieWire review here .

It just played at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival and CPH:DOX, with a theatrical release set for May this summer. The film premiered at last year's Venice Film Festival to mixed reviews. A rhapsodic portrait of the new generation from filmmakers Bill & Turner Ross ( Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets ). With high school in the rearview, five teenagers from small-town Oregon decide to embark on one last adventure. Piling into an old van with a busted tail light, their mission is to make it to a place they've never been — the Pacific coast, 500 miles away. Their plan, in full: " Fuck it. " Starring Makai Garza , Micah Bunch , Tony Aburto , Nichole Dukes , Nathalie Garcia . This is a scripted feature, but it also plays like a doc following these wayward contemporary teens as they get into all kinds of trouble. It's a nice film about today's youth, but I found it so fleeting & careless that it didn't impress me much. It's not for everyone. Have fun anyway.

Gasoline Rainbow is co-written and co-directed by Bill Ross and Turner Ross (also known as the Ross Brothers), creating their first narrative feature, after directing the doc films 45365 , Tchoupitoulas , River , Western , Contemporary Color , and Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets previously, plus many other short films. Produced by Michael Gottwald, Carlos Zozaya, Claire Haley, Joanne Feinberg, Lauren Cargo, Jesy Buhl, Olivia Lloyd. This initially premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival last year in the Orizzonti section, and it's playing at SXSW next this month. Mubi will debut the Ross's Gasoline Rainbow in select US theaters on May 10th, 2024 , then streaming on Mubi starting May 31st this summer season. Who wants to watch it?

Bong Joon Ho Unveils Irreverent First Trailer Robert Pattinson Starrer ‘Mickey 17'

The many facets of Robert Pattinson were on display in the first trailer for Mickey 17 , the upcoming film from Bong Joon Ho that delves into cloning, identity and space colonization.

Bong made his first trip to CinemaCon to show off the trailer, with Bong saying it's the story of "a simple man who ultimately ends up saving the world."

Mickey 17 is based on the novel Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton and follows Mickey 7, a space colonist known as an expendable - those who do the colony's most dangerous work and often die in the process, only to be brought back to life through cloning technology. The protagonist in the novel is the seventh version of a man named Mickey Barnes, but in the movie, that's been upped.

"The number is the number of times he dies. I killed him ten times more," Bong said to laughs from the crowd. "It's a sci-fi movie, but it's a human story."

The trailer, which was not released outside the room, was set to Frank Sinatra, which added levity to some rather violent scenes, such as Mickey losing a hand and being dumped alive into liquid metal (with his consent).

Mickey 17 has been the subject of much curiosity, given that it is Bong's followup to the best picture-winning Parasite , yet has taken quite awhile for a first look to emerge. Post-production delays pushed the film off a March 2024 release date to Jan. 31, 2025, a date that turned heads given that this does not position Oscar-winner Bong's latest as an awards contender. The film also stars Mark Ruffalo, Steven Yeun, Naomie Ackie, and Toni Collette.

Pattinson, who is a Warners partner as the star of The Batman and its upcoming sequel, called Bong's script "one of the funniest, bizarre sci-fi scripts I've ever read in my life."

Pattinson essentially plays two characters - Mickey 17 and Mickey 18, and while they are clones, Pattinson gave them different characteristics. Mickey 17, he says, is beaten down by life but is happy to be part of team, while 18 is more like "playing an evil brother" who is "out of control."

It’ll be gone in a flash — complete darkness for Monday’s solar eclipse will last up to 4 minutes and 28 seconds depending on where you are in the path of totality when the moon blocks the face of the sun.

A picture lasts much longer — and some photographers have long been prepping for the big moment.

Astrophotographer Stan Honda told CNN last week that he’s aiming for Fredericksburg, Texas , with the hopes of clear skies. Though he’s planning to carry four cameras, you don’t need that many to capture the ultra-rare event.

“With pretty much any kind of camera or any lens, you can get a good picture of the eclipse,” Honda explained. “I would just recommend a fairly sturdy tripod, to make your setup pretty steady, and a remote shutter release, because that allows you to take the pictures without jarring or moving the camera too much.”

Here are some other tips to help get that once-in-a-lifetime shot.

Get a solar filter

To fully experience the total eclipse, you’ll need to be located along the more than 100-mile-wide path of totality, from Texas to Maine.

You’ll also need a pair of  solar glasses  to shield your eyes and a solar filter to protect your smartphone’s camera from sunlight damaging the lens and overexposing your shot.

Ready-made smartphone solar filters include the  VisiSolar Smartphone Photo Filter  and the  Solar Snap Eclipse App Kit , Live Science reports .

You can also make your own solar filter by holding or taping the lens from a spare pair of solar glasses over the lens of your smartphone camera, according to  Dr. Ralph Chou , a professor emeritus of optometry and vision science at the University of Waterloo.

Everything to know about the 2024 solar eclipse

• The solar eclipse will take place Monday, April 8, blocking the sun for over 180 million people in its path.
• The eclipse will expand from Mexico’s Pacific Coast across North America , hitting 15 US states and pulling itself all the way to the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.
• New Yorkers will experience the solar eclipse just after 2 p.m. Monday.
• A huge explosion on the sun , known as a coronal mass ejection, is anticipated, according to experts. This happens when massive particles from the sun are hurled out into space, explains Ryan French of the National Solar Observatory in Boulder, Colorado.
• To avoid serious injury to the eyes , it is necessary to view the event through proper eyewear like eclipse glasses , or a handheld solar viewer, during the partial eclipse phase before and after totality.
• The next total solar eclipse will take place on Aug. 12, 2026, and totality will be visible to those in Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia and a small slice of Portugal. 

Set the focus and exposure

Once you’ve secured your solar filter, you’ll want to make sure you manually set the focus and exposure.

“The automatic settings just won’t work with the filter on, because most of the frame will be black, so it’ll be like taking a picture at night,” Honda told CNN. “Manually focusing would be a big help, too — you can autofocus on the sun, but then you have to disable the autofocus so that your camera doesn’t try to keep focusing through the filter. It’s so dark that it’ll be fooled by the darkness, and it won’t be able to focus.”

To manually set the focus on your phone, tap the moon on your screen.

On an iPhone, a small sun icon should appear to the right of the focus box. Drag the icon up or down to adjust the exposure.

Android users will need to hold their finger on the moon on their screen for several seconds before moving their finger left or right to adjust the focus.

Photographers will also want to turn the flash off for a clear photo.

Be careful with the zoom

As you zoom in, you often lose the quality of the photo depending on the device, so be careful with how close you get.

The iPhone 15 Pro boasts a telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom — which the Washington Post reports will yield the best quality — and up to 15x digital zoom.

Samsung Galaxy S Ultra phones have 3x to 10x optical zoom. The Space Zoom feature allows zooms up to 100x.

But if you don’t have these fancy phones, you can purchase a $20-$50 telephoto lens attachment for 12x to 18x the view.

Use burst mode to capture the ‘diamond ring’

You should also practice with the iPhone’s burst mode feature — which takes multiple photos at once — before the big show.

The solar eclipse is expected to last about two-and-a-half hours, but the most stunning part of the event is known as the “diamond ring,” which occurs right before the eclipse reaches totality and just after.

“It’s this very bright section of the sun, just on one corner of it — it looks like a ring with a diamond on it, and that lasts for just a few seconds, maybe 10 or so,” Honda said.

Use the burst mode for your best shot at capturing the diamond ring.
