Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 Review

No matter what you're looking for in a golf game, Tiger Woods 10 almost certainly has you covered.

By Justin Calvert on June 22, 2009 at 6:42PM PDT

Mark Twain once described golf as "a good walk ruined." Perhaps he'd have been a little more forgiving of the sport if he'd had an opportunity to spend some time with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10. EA Sports' latest hit-the-ball-at-the-hole simulator doesn't reinvent the genre, nor does it represent a huge leap forward over its predecessor, but there are plenty of new features and refinements on its scorecard to make it a winner for newcomers and veterans alike.

Should a guy in a bunny suit really be taking his putts so seriously?

Tiger Woods 10 is a golf game that seems designed to be all things for all people. For purists, there are 16 of the world's finest courses, club tuning options, US Golf Association rules, and a Tournament Challenge mode in which you can relive memorable achievements alongside pros. There are also live tournaments that take place alongside real-world events, such as the US Open, and let you compete with pros on the same leaderboard and in similar weather. For those whose knowledge of golf is limited to having seen Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmore , on the other hand, there are items of clothing that dramatically improve your attributes, an extremely forgiving default difficulty level, and wacky customization options that include a pink rabbit suit and a biker jacket. There are also laughable unlockable golfer animations and the ability to hit the ball significantly farther than any real-life pro--much like the hero of the aforementioned movie. Tiger Woods 10 is a game that anyone with even a passing interest in golf can enjoy, but it's unfortunate that its serious side and its Sandler side don't always play well together.

The game's biggest problem is that while new game-changing weather, the great new (optional) putting system, and the quality of your analog or three-click swing are factors that affect your performance on the course, all too often, it's your choice of golfer that has the biggest impact on how well you do. There are more than 30 pro and novelty golfers to choose from, but unless you're deliberately looking to handicap yourself, there's really no reason to play as anybody but Tiger Woods. There are a handful of characters with slightly better ratings for accuracy, but none that come close to matching Tiger's near-perfect ratings for all three of the remaining attributes: power, short game, and putting. None, save for the countless superhuman player-created golfers online who, after several hours of play, can make a trip to the pro shop and purchase a "max attributes" outfit.

Initially, creating and playing as a custom golfer can be very satisfying. You have the option to use digital photos uploaded to an EA Web site or your console's camera to put something vaguely resembling your face into the game; you play a few shots to determine your starting attributes; and, for a few rounds, you really have to play well to keep up with the pros. Your attributes will improve (or occasionally worsen) after every round based on your performance, and you're given opportunities to work on aspects of your game by replaying shots from your previous round in simple exercises presented by your in-game coach. That's all well and good, but your golfer improves so rapidly that by the time you reach your second or third Career mode tournament, it's relatively easy for you to win every competition thereafter--at least playing on the default difficulty.

Tiger Woods. Custom characters aside, there's no reason to play as anyone else.

Switching among Tiger 10's four difficulty modes doesn't impact which tees you play from or the inconsistent AI of the pro players. Rather, it determines how forgiving the controls are and which player aids you get to use. For example, on the default amateur difficulty, moving the analog stick down and then up to perform a swing determines the power of your shot but has very little impact on its direction. However, on pro difficulty, anything other than a perfectly vertical movement of the stick will result in a hook or a slice. If you ramp up the difficulty to the most challenging tour pro setting, you can no longer use power boosts, which you trigger by tapping a button during your swing; you can no longer add spin to the ball after striking it, which is done in much the same way; and, you don't get to use the putt preview, which gives you a second chance to line up shots on the green by showing you what your first attempt will look like without actually having to play it.

Given that the beginner and amateur difficulty settings are unrealistically easy (scores of 20 under par for a single round aren't uncommon) and that the tour pro difficulty is very challenging (expect scores closer to 20 over par to begin with), the pro difficulty is likely to be the sweet spot for anyone looking to realistically compete with the household name players. Unfortunately, the only time you can use pro difficulty online is when you're competing in one of the slickly implemented daily or weekly tournaments that force all players to use the same settings. Only the amateur and tour pro settings are available in the remaining multiplayer modes. While such games as best ball, four ball, and skins are great additions to the requisite stroke play and match play options, it's unfortunate and baffling that they only support two of the four difficulty settings. Regardless, online play is a lot of fun, and the Simultaneous Strokes mode in which four players take their shots at the same time and can see their opponents' efforts represented by ball-tracing colored lines is a great way to go head-to-head without having to sit and watch other players while waiting for your turn.

GamerNet challenges and live weather are just two benefits of playing online.

Even if you're not playing online, being connected to EA's servers improves the Tiger Woods 10 experience. You'll see a handful of advertisements that don't appear when you play offline, but the payoff is that you get to see news feeds of sports results and the like. You can also opt to play any course with "live" weather conditions courtesy of The Weather Channel. Weather is undoubtedly one of the most significant additions to this year's game because rain has just as big of an impact as wind, which has been a staple of golf games since day one, on how a course plays. GamerNet challenges are another benefit of playing while connected: Any time you play a particularly impressive shot, you have the option to upload it as a challenge for other players to beat during their regular play, and, of course, you can expect to be presented with plenty of them when you're playing yourself. It's possible to set up quite elaborate challenges, but for the most part, you're judged either on the length of your drive or how close you get to the hole with an approach shot. The latter are always possible to better, but the former are dependent on both your character's skills and the weather--being challenged to drive a ball almost 500 yards just isn't possible unless you're maxed out and have the wind at your back.

Other forms of player competition include a large selection of minigames and modes that use the mechanics of golf in some inventive ways. There are three modes that employ archery-style targets, including one titled Capture the Flag in which you can claim targets by hitting their bull's-eyes; you can play H.O.R.S.E., which here is known as T.I.G.E.R.; and if you're feeling extra competitive, you can challenge a friend to a game of Battle Golf, in which winning a hole entitles you to remove a club form your opponent's bag or return one to your own. In short, Tiger Woods 10 has plenty of variety, regardless of whether you're looking for a traditional golf experience, less conventional games to enjoy with friends, or both.

There's no guarantee that your custom golfer will be instantly recognizable as you, but for the most part, Tiger Woods 10 is a good-looking game. Professional players are instantly recognizable, and if you've ever visited such courses as St. Andrews and Torrey Pines, or even just seen them on television, you'll find that they are as well. Details, such as bunkers and expanses of water, look great in this year's game, and when you see waves rolling in on the rocks alongside the 18th at Pebble Beach, you'll understand why it's one of the most celebrated holes in golf. Crowds made up of emotionless doppelgangers that form to watch your tee shots and putts detract from rather than enhance the experience, but at least they're easy to ignore. The same, unfortunately, can't be said for the commentary team of Scott Van Pelt and Kelly Tilghman.

The new precision putting mechanic is a big improvement over last year's game.

Commentary is generally something that greatly enhances the TV-style presentation of a sports game, but in Tiger Woods 10, the option to mute the commentary is definitely a welcome one. One will frequently correct the other after he or she wrongly predicts where your ball is going to land, they'll tell you that they've never seen worse putting after you miss a giant putt by only the tiniest of margins, and Van Pelt regularly states that he has no idea who's at the top of a competition leaderboard--even when you're winning by an unrealistic 20-plus strokes. Neither commentator's delivery is great, but ultimately, it's the quality of the writing and its implementation in the game that brings it down.

As golf games go, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 is tough to beat. There really is something for everyone with even a passing interest in golf in this sizeable package, and although there's clearly still some room for improvement, it's well worth a look even if you already own last year's game.

  • Leave Blank
  • Features 16 of the world's best golf courses
  • Four difficulty levels that cater to everyone
  • Lots of different online and offline modes
  • Great controls, especially the new precision putting
  • Commentary is so bad you'll almost certainly mute it
  • Not all difficulty levels are supported online

Tiger Woods is back in action.

File that under, “Things you love to see.”

The 82-time PGA TOUR winner last teed it up at the Masters seven months ago, making the cut but withdrawing during the third round – citing plantar fasciitis that had flared up on a rainy Saturday.

But now Woods is ready to play golf again.

He will once again play a dual role of host and participant at the Hero World Challenge, contested in Albany, Bahamas, and it was announced last week that Team Woods will play the PNC Championship for the fourth straight year. These are two very different situations for Woods, as the 72-hole Hero World Challenge requires walking, while the 36-hole PNC allows the use of a cart.

Woods did not play last year’s Hero World Challenge – withdrawing before the competition due to the same plantar fasciitis condition. He made two TOUR starts earlier this year, finishing T45 at The Genesis Invitational before the Masters.

In an interview with the Associated Press two weeks ago, Woods said he was pain-free when it comes to his right ankle which was fused in April.

“It’s the other areas that have been compensated for,” Woods said.

Woods compared his current situation to when he had fusion surgery on his lower back and said the L5 and S1 vertebrae were fine.

“But all the surrounding areas are where I had all my problems and I still do,” Woods said. “So, you fix one, others have to become more hypermobile to get around it, and it can lead to some issues.”

Regardless of body issues, though, Woods has always been a fighter. And the fact that he is working on a return to action, starting in Albany, is going to make an already exciting week that much more fun.

FIELD NOTES : Tiger Woods will aim to play four rounds for the first time since he withdrew at the Masters in April, electing not to continue with his third round when it resumed Sunday morning … Viktor Hovland is going for a three-peat. The reigning FedExCup champion has not teed it up on the PGA TOUR since his FedExCup triumph at East Lake Golf Club, but he played twice on the DP World Tour this fall, finishing T5 at the BMW PGA Championship and T2 at the DP World Tour Championship … Will Zalatoris is set to return to action. Zalatoris herniated a disk in his back at the 2022 BMW Championship and took the remainder of the year off. He played seven times in 2023 before withdrawing before his first-round tee time at the Masters. He announced April 10 he would miss the remainder of the season after having back surgery … World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will tee it up for the first time since the Ryder Cup. Scheffler has finished second at the Hero World Challenge the last two years … Max Homa returns to action with a run of five straight top 10s on the PGA TOUR under his belt. In fact, Homa hasn’t finished outside the top 25 since missing the cut at the Travelers Championship … Matt Fitzpatrick will return to action after finishing tied for 27th at the DP World Tour Championship. Fitzpatrick won this year’s RBC Heritage and captured the DP World Tour’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in October … Open Championship winner Brian Harman teed it up at The RSM Classic to close out the 2022-23 PGA TOUR season – his first action since the Ryder Cup – and finished 44th. This is his Hero World Challenge debut ... U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark , set for his Hero World Challenge debut, is teeing it up for the first time since the Ryder Cup. Prior to that, he finished third at the TOUR Championship … 2014 Hero World Challenge winner Jordan Spieth has recorded three straight top-six finishes at Albany. Spieth went winless on TOUR this season but had seven top 10s … 2022 PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year Cameron Young , who finished third at last year’s Hero, returns to Albany … Collin Morikawa will tee it up for the first time since his impressive final-round 63 to win the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP. Morikawa was supposed to play in the Netflix Cup earlier this month but withdrew due to a back injury … Morikawa’s replacement at the Netflix Cup, Tony Finau , returns to Albany where he has never finished outside the top 10, with back-to-back seventh-place results at the event. Finau won twice on TOUR in 2022-23 and will tee it up for the first time since the TOUR Championship … Keegan Bradley heads back to Albany for the first time since 2018. Bradley had two wins on TOUR this season and finished tied for 19th in his title defense at the ZOZO Championship in October … Like Bradley, Jason Day also returns to Albany for the first time since 2018. Day won the AT&T Byron Nelson in May, his first TOUR title since that same year … Ryder Cuppers Sam Burns, Sepp Straka, Rickie Fowler and Justin Thomas are all in the field in the Bahamas. Fowler won the event in 2017, punctuated by a course-record 61 in the final round … Tournament exemptions were granted to Justin Rose and Lucas Glover to round out the 20-player field.

FEDEXCUP : No FedExCup points are awarded at the Hero World Challenge; however, four past FedExCup winners are in the field including defending champion Viktor Hovland – the defending FedExCup winner.

Official World Golf Ranking points will be awarded.

COURSE : Albany Golf Course, par 72, 7,449 yards. The links-style Ernie Els design will host the Hero World Challenge for the eighth time. Players must contend with windswept dunes measuring up to 30 feet high and challenging water features. The course boasts five par 5s and five par 3s.

72-HOLE RECORD: 262, Spieth (2014); Albany record: 263, Bubba Watson (2015) 18-HOLE RECORD: 61, Fowler (fourth round, 2017)

LAST TIME: Hovland successfully defended his title after topping Scheffler by two shots, becoming the first player since Woods (2006, 2007) to go back-to-back at the Hero. Scheffler also finished runner-up to Hovland the year prior. In 2021, Hovland rallied from six shots back of Scheffler to edge the Texan. Last year, however, Hovland held a three-shot advantage over Scheffler going into the final round. Hovland went wire-to-wire to beat a field that included 15 of the top 20 in the world. PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year Young finished third, while Xander Schauffele finished fourth and Thomas finished fifth.

10 Things We Learned From Tiger Woods' Hero World Challenge Press Conference

Tiger Woods had plenty to say ahead of his return to pro golf this week at the Hero World Challenge

  • Sign up to Golf Monthly Newsletter Newsletter

Jonny Leighfield

Tiger Woods makes his eagerly awaited comeback this week at the Hero World Challenge, and he had a lot to say in his Tuesday morning press conference at Albany.

Woods couldn’t hide his frustration at players not being aware of the merger, spoke about his new ‘pain-free’ walking and said he “absolutely” still thinks he can win.

Here are some of the notable topics discussed by the 15-time Major champion…

GAME FEELS RUSTY

Woods revealed he has played plenty of holes throughout the latter stages of his rehabilitation but hasn’t had to put pencil to paper in a long time during competition. He told media he’s “just as curious as all of you are to see what happens” when he tees it up.

He said: "My game feels rusty, I haven't played in a while. I'm excited to compete and play, and I'm just as curious as all of you are to see what happens because I haven't done it in a while."

ONE EVENT PER MONTH IN 2024

Tiger was recently rumoured to have been eyeing up 5-6 events next year but he hopes to play around double that. One event per month was what he is hoping for now that walking is pain free.

Woods said: "I think that best scenario would be maybe a tournament a month. I think that's realistic. Again, right now, the biggest events are one per month. It sets itself up for that. Now, I need to get myself ready for all that. I think this week is a big step in that direction."

Woods went on to specifically mention the Genesis Invitational at Riviera as a potential start, which he hosts and also played in this year. Riviera is in his home city of Los Angeles and was the venue for his first ever PGA Tour start in 1992. He has never won the tournament, though.

(ANKLE) PAIN-FREE

After his subtalar fusion in April , Woods’ ankle is now pain free after saying his surgery was a “success.” That will explain his optimism for believing he can play one event per month next year, but Woods did stress that “other parts are taking the brunt of the load.”

He continued by saying his knee and back hurts and that forces have to go somewhere, and they go “up the chain”.

Woods said: "I'm not concerned at all about walking [it]. As I said, I don't have any of the ankle pain that I had with the hardware that's been placed in my foot, that's all gone.

"The other parts of my body, my knee hurts, my back. The forces go somewhere else. Just like when I had my back fused, the forces have to go somewhere. So it's up the chain."

THAT CAN'T HAPPEN AGAIN

Woods suggested that he was not specifically upset by the June 6th agreement but more about the fact that players were not consulted before a decision was made for them by PGA Tour commissioner, Jay Monahan.

Throughout the 30-minute press conference, Woods consistently uttered the phrase "can't happen again" when discussing how the players were left in the dark prior to that deal being revealed.

Woods said: "[Jay] understands what happened prior to that [announcement] can't happen again and won't happen again, not with the players that are involved and not with the player directors having the role that we have."

RYDER CUP 2025

Woods has been touted for the next Ryder Cup captaincy at Bethpage in 2025 but he firmly shut that down when asked, with the merger far too important right now. Woods said he’s “not thinking about it” and that “there’s too much at stake with our Tour” at the moment.

He said: "Right now, there's too much at stake with our Tour to think about a Ryder Cup. We have to get this done and we have to be focused on this right now. The Ryder Cup can take a beat - the players and everyone involved understands that this is an issue we need to focus on."

WHO'S YOUR CADDIE?

One of the key talking points ahead of Woods' professional comeback was who will carry the great man's bag once he tees it up again.

Woods answered the query in the immediate term but stated he is yet to make a long-term call.

He said: “I’ve got Rob [McNamara] this week, he’s seen me hit a few shots. As far as next year, I don’t know yet. I don’t think Charlie’s going to be able to caddie. Can’t play hooky that often. I don’t know. Honestly, I really don’t know.

"I was just looking forward to this week and seeing how things turned out. I’m curious to see what 72 holes looks like on the body and my game and then try and set a schedule going forward into next year.”

'ABSOLUTELY' THINKS HE CAN WIN

Tiger was asked what drove him to make a return to pro golf late in his 40s, with the returned answer a simple one - he loves competing and he loves to win.

Just before confirming he "absolutely" believes he can still win, Woods explained what compelled him to go through all of that rehab once more.

He said: "I love competing, I love playing. I miss being out here with the guys, I miss the camaraderie and the fraternity-like atmosphere out here and the overall banter. But what drives me is I love to compete.

"There will come a point in time, I haven't come around to it fully yet, that I won't be able to win again. When that day comes, I'll walk -- well, now I can walk. I won't say run away, but I'm going to walk away."

MCILROY STEPPING DOWN FROM PGA TOUR POLICY BOARD

The 15-time Major champion said he “totally understands” Rory McIlroy ’s withdrawal from the PGA Tour board, pointing out that the Northern Irishman had to juggle board meetings and being golf’s spokesperson all the while competing near the thick of it week-in, week-out on the PGA Tour.

Woods explained: "I totally understand why Rory made that decision. We put a lot of effort and time into the Delaware meeting and getting everyone aligned for that.

"Going from there and the next couple years, just the involvement or the conflict within golf and then his participation at the highest level. He was in contention almost every tournament he played in and he was the spokesman at the same time. So that was very difficult on him personally and I totally understand it."

A PATHWAY BACK TO THE PGA TOUR FROM LIV

A significant part of the conversation with Woods centred around his involvement in the PGA Tour's deal with Saudi Arabia's PIF and how the game of golf could potentially heal moving forward.

Part of that healing process may depend on whether and if players who signed up to the LIV Golf League may be allowed to return to the PGA Tour, should they want.

Woods was keen not to give too much away, though, and insisted there are still "many different scenarios" on the table.

He said: "As far as a pathway, we're still working on that. That's part of the deal we're working through is trying to find a path, whatever that looks like. There's so many different scenarios."

CURRENT STATE OF THE MERGER

Woods confirmed that no matter what may be reported or suggested externally, everyone involved in trying to thrash out a deal is pulling in the same direction.

He said: "One thing, all the parties are talking and we're aggressively working on trying to get a deal done. We're all trying to make sure that the process is better, too. So the implementation of governance is one of the main topics as long as -- getting the deal done, but making sure it's done the right way."

Woods later went on to field a question about his confidence levels in regard to the deal being past a certain point by the end of the year.

He said: "We have multiple options, but still, we would like to have a deal done December 31st. That's what the agreement said in the summer and all parties understand that. But there are other options out there."

Updates from...

Jonny Leighfield headshot

Hello everyone, Jonny here, ready to bring you all of the key updates from Tiger Woods' pre-Hero World Challenge press conference. After a seven-month absence, excitement is building as Woods makes his latest professional return just before Christmas.

We are due to hear from the 15-time Major winner at 10am ET/3pm GMT from Albany Golf Club in The Bahamas where he will discuss a variety of subjects - including how his body is holding up and whether he fancies his chances of a win this week.

Thank you for joining me!

THE 8 BIG QUESTIONS AHEAD OF TIGER'S RETURN

Unfortunately, Tiger is no stranger to a long-term injury which has prevented him from lighting up the golfing stage for months at a time in the past.

But although he is apparently fit and firing these days, there are still a number of lingering doubts from some fans that can only be answered through action and not words.

Here, we pose the eight big questions ahead of Tiger Woods' return to pro golf .

WHAT'S IN STORE FOR WOODS IN 2024?

In an ideal world, Woods feels back to his old self and takes part in 15 tournaments next year. In reality, and for a couple of very good reasons, that is quite unlikely to happen.

But how many events could one of golf's greatest ever players manage in 2024? Well, according to the man himself, up to half a dozen have been pencilled in already .

Add in even just a few extra and the game (plus most of its fans) would be extremely grateful.

TIGER PROWLING BACK UP THE RANKINGS

No matter what happens this week against this stacked field of 20 players , Woods is all-but guaranteed to return into the world's top-1,000 golfers . He is currently at his lowest-ever ranking but could even rocket up well inside the top-200 with a win.

AWAITING TIGER WOODS

We are moments away from Woods' scheduled arrival time...

TIGER IS HERE

Here he is. Right on time. A picture of professionalism.

HERO EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN MAKES ANNOUNCEMENTS

Hero MotoCorp Executive Chairman Dr. Pawan Munjal starts by welcoming Tiger Woods to his third competitive comeback to professional golf.

He also announces the prize purse for the HWC 2023 is being increased to $4.5 million. In 2024, it will increase to $5 million.

Woods says that increased prize pool elevates the event and attracts the best players in the world after a long year. TW says he is excited to continue that relationship through 2025.

WOODS ON HIS GAME AND HOW HE FEELS

"My game is rusty!" Tiger jokes. TW says he doesn't have any of that pain in his ankle anymore, but other places have taken over with a few small issues. Says he is just as excited as everyone else to see what his game looks like again.

TW says his commitment to play in this event was solidified after caddying for Charlie recently. TW was still lifting in the gym and recovering well after each day, so after a conversation with the one-man committee, he was all good to go.

TW ON REACTION TO FRAMEWORK ANNOUNCEMENT

TW was surprised, like a lot of people. Surprised the process was what it was, frustrated with what happened. And he took steps to ensure player involvement would increase and not be left out "like we were" previously.

December 31 is coming up quickly, and we would like to make sure some things are implemented so that everyone involved in the PGA Tour gets the best deal possible.

REPLACED OR RE-FUSED

TW says his two options after the Masters in April were to get his ankle either replaced or re-fused. He chose the latter and admitted the hardest part of this whole process was the six months after where he couldn't do a lot.

DOES PGA TOUR/PIF DEAL NEED TO HAPPEN?

We have multiple options, but we'd like to get a deal done. All parties understand that, but we still need to get a deal done before December 31.

As long as the players have an input in future decisions and the processes happen more quickly, that's what we're looking for.

WHY THIS TOURNAMENT AS A COMEBACK PLATFORM?

The timing of this event has always been important. Plus the size of the field. It helps manage my expectations for the following year. Plus, my foundation benefits from this. So there are so many positives to take from me playing in this tournament.

WHAT WILL PRO GOLF LOOK LIKE IN THE NEXT YEAR OR TWO?

I don't think the answer is murky. There are a lot of moving parts and we have different options as to where we can take golf. We're trying to figure that out and see what the best solution is moving forward.

WHO WILL CADDIE FOR TW THIS WEEK?

Woods confirms Rob McNamara will caddie this week, but he hasn't made a decision on who will do it throughout 2024. Says Charlie can't "play hooky" that much, so he's out of the question, but Woods is yet to make a call.

WOODS ON TGL DELAY

Tiger says the positives to take from the delay is that they can all take their time to make sure it's done right. TW has learned so much about brand exposure and believes the product will be in an even better place when it takes off.

ON HIS PLANS FOR 2024

Best scenario would be a tournament a month in 2024. Maybe starting with the Genesis, then maybe the Players. And go from there. This week will hopefully be a step in the right direction, but Woods is not getting ahead of himself and wants to see what happens this week.

WOODS ON JAY MONAHAN AND THE JOB HE HAS DONE

Jay has been a part of the direction the game is going. He understands that what happened with the deal can't happen again, and it won't happen again. The player directors will help improve the processes.

Woods moves on to say team golf can play a big part in the future of golf, but ideas need to be thrashed out to make sure it works for everyone involved.

ON WHAT INVESTORS ARE INVESTING IN

We have to protect the integrity of our Tour, and what that looks like going forward. Trying to figure that out over the past few months has been a difficult task. There are a lot of moving parts which don't help trying to get a deal done. But we have to protect the players in this.

TW says he "totally understands" why Rory McIlroy moved away from the Policy Board. TW says Rory was in contention in almost every tournament he played in while also being the spokesman - that was tough on him.

WOODS ON WHAT MOTIVATED HIM TO CONTINUE PLAYING

I love competing. I miss playing, the group feeling out here. Once I believe I can't win again, then I'll walk away. A reporter asks him whether he still believes he can win this week. He replied: "Absolutely."

ON RYDER CUP CAPTAINCY

There's too much going on with our Tour to think about that right now. Says the Ryder Cup can "take a beat" for the time being.

DO YOU HAVE FAITH IN JAY?

That was part of why I came on to the board. I do have faith in him, and that's why I came onto the board. But what happened before can't happen again. I was frustrated the players were never involved. This is our Tour. There is no Tour without the players.

I am confident a deal can happen. Everyone is working right now with no animosity because we all want a deal to happen before the end of the year.

That's all from Tiger Woods this afternoon. He is off to prepare for the Pro-Am on Wednesday and tune up ahead of the competitive action on Thursday.

WHAT OUR NEWS EDITOR THOUGHT...

Elliott Heath at the 2022 Masters

A fascinating Tiger press conference as always, and I found it noticeable how he appeared to be very unhappy with how the merger went down. "It can't happen again" and "that can't happen again" was a phrase he used multiple times, with the key point he was unhappy with being the fact that players were completely unaware.

Woods called the PGA Tour "our tour" and that's clearly why he joined the board, to ensure that players remain in control.

Elsewhere, it was remarkable to hear he hopes to play one event per month next year and also very pleasing to hear he is pain-free in the ankle.

So to summarise, my key takeaways were...

  • Very unhappy that players weren't made aware of PIF framework deal
  • Quietly confident in his health that he could play 12 events next year
  • Says he "absolutely" can win at elite level - surely another W is on the way next year if the body holds up

2024 Masters odds, picks, predictions: Tiger Woods projection by top golf model that nailed last 2 winners

Tiger woods, an 82-time pga tour champion, is expected to be part of the 2024 masters field at augusta national golf club.

tiger woods pga tour 10 tournament challenge

The last time golf fans saw Tiger Woods in a PGA Tour event, he withdrew from the Genesis Invitational due to illness. The time before that, Woods withdrew from the 2023 Masters due to a plantar fasciitis injury. Can the 48-year-old Woods complete his first 72 holes in a PGA Tour event since the 2023 Genesis Invitational at the 2024 Masters? Woods has had some of his most memorable moments in golf at the Masters, including an improbable run to win the 2019 edition for his first major title since 2007. Woods is a 160-1 longshot to win in the 2024 Masters odds, and the tournament tees off from Augusta National Golf Club on Thursday, April 11. If Woods wins, he'll tie Jack Nicklaus (six) for the most Masters victories.

Scottie Scheffler, who won two tournaments in March, is the 5-1 favorite among the 2024 Masters contenders. Rory McIlroy, who is looking to complete the golf career grand slam, has 10-1 Masters odds 2024 to win his first green jacket. Jon Rahm, the defending Masters champion, follows at 13-1, so should you include any of these favorites in your 2024 Masters bets? Before locking in your 2024 Masters picks, be sure to see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

SportsLine's proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June 2020. In fact, the model is up nearly $9,500 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 10 majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the Masters 2024 field is set, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.

Top 2024 Masters predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 Masters: Justin Thomas, a 28-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Thomas, a 15-time PGA Tour winner, is a two-time major winner but is seeking his first green jacket.

After a rough 2022-23 season in which Thomas finished 71st in the FedEx Cup standings, the 30-year-old got off to a stronger start in the 2024 PGA Tour season with back-to-back top-six showings over his first two tournaments. Thomas missed the cut at last year's Masters during his rough stretch, but he placed eighth or better in his previous two showings at Augusta National Golf Club. He finished in the top 20 in his previous four Masters appearances before last season and ranked 12th on the PGA Tour in birdie average through his first seven tournaments of this season. If Thomas can build off his strong start and sink timely birdies at the 2024 Masters, the model loves his value at 28-1 odds to win his third career major.

The model has also examined where Tiger finishes. His resume speaks for itself entering his 26th start at Augusta National, where he has won the green jacket five times, second only to Jack Nicklaus. The 48-year-old holds the record for career scoring average (71.1) and most consecutive rounds shooting par or better (16).

Woods hasn't been as active on the links since his car crash in 2021, withdrawing from three events and being cut from another in his seven starts since then. However, he showed in 2023 that he can still compete in a major competition. Woods made the cut for the final round at the Masters before a foot injury forced him to withdraw and eventually end his season.  The model just locked in its Tiger Woods Masters picks here .

How to make 2024 Masters picks

The model is also targeting six golfers with Masters odds of 20-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's PGA picks here .

Who will win the 2024 Masters, which longshots will stun the golfing world, and where will Tiger Woods finish? Check out the Masters 2024 odds below, then visit SportsLine to see the projected Masters leaderboard, all from the model that's nailed 10 golf majors, including the last two Masters winners .

Johnny Damon: How I started loving golf

All the clues that Tiger Woods will be playing at the Masters in 2024

Tiger Woods can play Augusta any time he likes. His visit on Saturday with Florida chum Justin Thomas and Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley was not a social round. Woods doesn’t do social golf . He was preparing for his 26th appearance at the Masters next week.

As a past champion, a record five times no less, Woods is automatically qualified to play in what remains an invitational event. Protocol requires past winners to inform the tournament if they are withdrawing. Woods has given no such undertaking. That, coupled with Saturday’s recce, can be taken as assurance of his participation.

What’s the latest on his injuries?

I've seen schumacher, bolt and messi at their peak - but tiger's win at augusta beats them all.

In the past, no matter what his physical condition after a series of surgeries to knee and back, Woods would insist he was coming for the win. Indeed, he achieved arguably the greatest of his Masters victories in 2019 after a spinal fusion operation. However, he has played only five tournaments since the crash in February 2021 which almost cost him his right leg .

Though he made the cut at the Masters a year ago, he was forced to withdraw during the third round , clearly in discomfort. He did complete four rounds at the Hero World Challenge in December and teed it up at the Genesis Invitational in February, where he was forced to withdraw as a result of flu.

Why is Woods playing a big deal?

Woods remains the game’s ultimate reference point. Whenever he tees it up engagement in golf increases. And that has never been more important for a sport suffering the consequences of almost two years of division following the departure of many of the leading names to LIV Golf . Viewing figures are down significantly with fans frustrated at the lack of star names competing at the traditional events on the PGA Tour.

The teary interview that shows what golf is losing in LIV-PGA power struggle

Woods is himself at the centre of attempts to bring to a conclusion the talks between the PGA Tour and LIV’s Saudi backers to unify the sport under one administration. The hope is that a deal will include a way back to the PGA Tour on a regular basis for the likes of Masters champion Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Kopeka and Bryson DeChambeau. Until then the four majors are the only tournaments that will see the best players in the world compete against each other.

That in itself ramps anticipation ahead of the first major of the season. Add the name of Woods to the mix and interest spikes still further.

Does he have any chance of competing on Sunday?

His record suggest he will at least be in the field come Sunday. Woods has missed the cut only once, and never as a professional. He went home early in 1996 when he competed as an amateur. The following year, aged 21, Woods returned to win the first of his 15 major titles by a record 12 strokes. And this after taking 40 strokes to complete the front nine on the opening day.

I'm a Morrisons driver who just won £170k playing golf - but won't quit my job

Should he make the cut for the 24th time next week, Woods will stand alone in the Augusta annals, one clear of Gary Player and his great friend Freddie Couples, with whom he shares the current record of 23 consecutive cuts.

The limited exposure to tournament golf following an injury that could have cost him a limb or even his life, would ordinarily count against a golfer, but such is the power of the Woods brand, fuelled by a track record of improbable successes, the idea that Woods might win a sixth jacket is not completely wild.

He did, after all, win the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines with a fractured leg that required surgery the following week, as well as the incredible result at the Masters five years ago achieved with a back that he couldn’t bend.

The Florida telegraph has been humming with reports of Woods’ peerless ball-striking. Technically he arguably retains the tools to succeed. Testing them in competitive conditions at a big, physically demanding course of epic elevation changes is the issue. But few have walked the golfing walk like Tiger Woods.

Tiger Woods included in 2024 Masters official tournament field list

tiger woods pga tour 10 tournament challenge

Five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods is included in the official tournament field list , an indication that he could play next month at Augusta National.

Woods, 48, whose appearances in PGA Tour events have been limited since his 2021 car accident , has played 25 times in the Masters and won in 1997, 2001, 2002, 2005 and 2019.

During last year's tournament, he made the cut for a 23rd consecutive time, tying the record shared by Gary Player and Fred Couples. But he was in pain in the third round and announced before the round resumed on Sunday that he was withdrawing . He had surgery on his right ankle 10 days later to address post-traumatic arthritis.

Woods' lone PGA Tour appearance this season was at the Genesis Invitational, and he pulled out of that tournament because of illness.

This year's Masters is scheduled to run from April 11-14.

Woods' five green jackets at the Masters are one shy of the record held by Jack Nicklaus. Woods trails only Nicklaus in overall major victories, 18-15, and is the co-leader with Sam Snead with 82 PGA Tour victories.

Tiger Woods to speak Tuesday morning at Hero World Challenge

Tiger Woods to speak Tuesday morning at Hero World Challenge

Change Text Size

Tiger Woods will meet the media at 10 a.m. ET on Tuesday in advance of the Hero World Challenge, his first tournament press conference since the Masters in April, his most recent PGA TOUR start.

Woods, this week's tournament host, committed to the Hero World Challenge in Albany, Bahamas, earlier this month. Woods hasn’t competed since undergoing right ankle surgery in April, a subtalar fusion procedure to alleviate arthritis from a broken talus bone suffered in a February 2021 car crash. Woods’ surgery followed his Masters withdrawal during the third round, having struggled to navigate Augusta National’s hilly terrain on a rainy Saturday.

Woods told the Associated Press that his right ankle was pain-free, but that issues lingered on the rest of the leg.

“My ankle is fine. Where they fused my ankle, I have absolutely zero issue whatsoever,” Woods said at the time . “That pain is completely gone. It’s the other areas that have been compensated for.”

Woods has been active in recent weeks, caddying 54 holes for his son Charlie at the Notah Begay III Junior Golf National Championship after attending the World Wide Technology Championship in Mexico – contested at the Woods-designed El Cardonal at Diamante.

Following the Hero, he’s slated to compete at the PNC Championship alongside Charlie in mid-December. Team Woods has competed in three consecutive PNCs, highlighted by a second-place finish in 2021.

How has Woods occupied his time in recent months? What’s the state of his game? What are his takes on the world of golf since the Masters? Look for Woods to share insight on these topics and more Tuesday morning.

Woods' press conference will be streamed on PGATOUR.COM and the TOUR's X, formerly known as Twitter, and Facebook channels.

2024 Houston Open odds, field: Surprising PGA picks, predictions by model that's called 10 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the texas children's houston open 2024 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks.

tony-finau-pga-golf-usatsi.jpg

Tony Finau looks to do something no other golfer has done in two decades when the PGA Tour returns to the Lone Star State for the 2024 Texas Children's Houston Open. The six-time Tour winner is the defending champion at Memorial Park Golf Course and is looking to be the first pro to win the Houston Open back-to-back times since Vijay Singh in 2004 and 2005. Finau has steep competition in the 2024 Houston Open, however, and is listed at 18-1 to defend last year's victory. The Houston Open 2024 will begin on Thursday with the first tee times set for 8:20 a.m. ET.

Scottie Scheffler is coming off back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship and is the 14-5 favorite in the latest 2024 Houston Open odds. Other notable golfers in the Houston Open field include Wyndham Clark (14-1) and Will Zalatoris (18-1). Before locking in any 2024 Houston Open picks, be sure to see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

Now that the 2024 Houston Open field is set, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard .

Top 2024 Houston Open predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the Houston Open 2024: Finau, the defending champion and one of the top favorites, struggles this week and doesn't even crack the top five. Finau coasted to victory at the 2022 Houston Open, shooting 16-under par and winning by four strokes. He went wire-to-wire and set a tournament and course record of 264 en route to his fifth career win.

However, Finau has struggled mightily in recent weeks, finishing T-45 or worse in three of his last five starts on the PGA Tour, which includes a missed cut at last week's Valspar Championship. Finau's recent rough patch can be directly attributed to his inconsistent putting stroke. The 34-year-old enters this week's event ranked 144th in strokes gained: putting (-0.460) and 131st in total putting (235.3), which doesn't bode well for his chances to finish on top of the leaderboard.

Another surprise: Stephan Jaeger, a 50-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday.

The German golfer has a pair of T3 finishes on the 2024 season, fighting for the top of the leaderboard at the Farmers Insurance Open and the Mexico Open. He also ranks sixth on the Tour in total driving (96) and ninth in driving distance (307.5), which sets him up to play well on the long fairways at Memorial Park. Jaeger also ranks 24th in strokes gained off the tee (0.438) which could be another reason why the model is high on him to finish strong at the Houston Open.  See who else to pick here .

How to make 2024 Houston Open picks

The model is also targeting three other golfers with odds of 40-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .
