What to do in Oman in 3 days – A local’s guide

Sharing is caring!

Oman in the Middle East is one of the most naturally and culturally diverse countries. Still not very popular Middle Eastern destinations among the tourists, Oman is gradually making its mark on the world tourism map. There are a lot of different kinds of things to do in Oman. The country is home to a long stretch of a 3000km coastline, the highest peak in the Arabian Peninsula, and centuries-old history of the Frankincense civilization.

Oman is also one of the largest countries in the Arabian Gulf, meaning that in order to explore the country from north to south a minimum of two weeks is required. However, if you’re on a short visit to Oman, here is an ideal three days Oman itinerary to spend a memorable holiday in Oman.

Oman itinerary for 3 days

Muscat (the capital city of muscat in oman ), sultan qaboos mosque.

The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, named after the ruling king of Oman is the biggest and the most lavish mosque in the country. Made up with white marbles, the mosque is located right in the heart of the city. The main praying hall in the mosque hangs the world’s largest chandelier, which is fourteen meters long. There are small chandeliers hung all across the mosque.

Sultan Qaboos Mosque

Royal Opera House

The Royal Opera House of Muscat is the main center of arts and culture in Oman. The opera house is a marvelous white complex with gardens and auditoriums for different arts and culture-related events.

Royal opera house-Muscat

The area of Muttrah in Muscat is the oldest part of the city. Dating back to the 16th century when Portuguese landed in the Arabian Gulf, Muttrah was developed into a port. However, now the area has been converted into an active tourist hub of Muscat with a beautiful corniche road and long walkway, an old Arabian Souq (market) and a century’s old iconic fort built on the top of a cliff.

Visiting the iconic hub of Muscat on the very first day in Oman is definitely a must-do activity to do in Muscat. The long Muttrah walkway is an extremely picturesque walkway where one can stroll across the Arabian Ocean with views of the mountains one side and life buzzing at the Muttrah Souq on another.

Muttrah in Muscat

Breakfast at Shakespeare at Al Mouj Muscat

After spending the first full-day sight-seeing and exploring Muscat, it is recommended to start off the day with a filling breakfast. Head out to Al Mouj Muscat, which is a smaller replica of the Dubai Marina with a mall and a dining street facing the marina.

The Shakespeare Café at Al Mouj Muscat serves the best breakfast in town. The English and American breakfast options at the Shakespeare Café are a great choice to start off the day. Also, the overall vibe of eating the breakfast while sitting across a marina is very relaxing.

Breakfast at shakespeare

Snorkeling at the Daymaniyat Island

After a nice stroll across the marina, it is now time to get a bit adventurous and to explore the underwater beauty of Oman. There are more than twenty islands in close vicinity of the city of Muscat, however, the most popular and perhaps the most beautiful island near to Muscat is the Daymaniyat Island.

The Daymaniyat Island is a nature reserve and home to highly diverse coral reefs and marine life. It is a snorkeling haven and that’s what you will be doing next on your Oman holiday. There are many companies that operate tour to the Daymaniyat Island which is started from Al Mouj Marina.

Snorkeling gear and light refreshment are provided by the tour companies. Just after a short thirty minutes boat ride from Al Mouj is the Daymaniyat Island. The healthy preserved coral reef at the island is home to thousands of marine creatures which are nowhere to be found in the Arabian waters.

Muscat Avenues Mall

Spending an adventurous afternoon snorkeling at the Daymaniyat Island can get a little tiring, so for the evening, a shopping spree at a mall would be a great idea!

The Muscat Avenues Mall is located right in the heart of the city. it is the largest mall in Oman, with a big hypermarket area for grocery shopping, a gold souq, more than hundred local and international retail brands, Oman’s largest indoor amusement park, a food court, and a 7D cinema. To make the most out of your visit to the Muscat Avenues Mall, it is recommended to spend around three to four hours in the mall.

Bimmah Sinkhole (Hawayat Najm)

After exploring the capital city of Muscat for two days, the third day can be used to venture out of the capital and explore the nearest region to Muscat. As Sharqiyah governorate (province) is the nearest governorate to visit from Muscat. Just a three hours’ drive away from Muscat, As Sharqiyah, is considered as the fishing the hub of Oman.

While driving from Muscat to the city of Sur, which is the capital city of Sharqiyah, a major tourist spot comes on the way. The Bimmah Sinkhole or Hawayat Najm in Arabic is a small park which is formed across the one of its kind sinkhole in Oman. This is one of the most popular place to take day trip from Muscat .

Bimmah Sinkhole

Just ten kilometers after the Bimmah Sinkhole is another famous tourist spot of Oman, the Wadi Shab. Wadi in Arabic means a water stream that flows through the mountains. Due to its close proximity with the capital city of Muscat, Wadi Shab is a famous picnic spot for the tourists and locals alike.

Surrounded by the mountains, Wadi Shab has three big water pools and a few smaller ones that appear only after heavy rain in the area. Wadi Shab is an ideal place for the adventure lovers as the main water pools can be reached only by a small boat ride followed by an easy twenty minutes hike in the mountains.

The big water pools are around five to seven meters deep. Wadi Shab is also the official cliff diving site in Oman. So, if you bear the courage to dive into a natural water pool off a cliff, Wadi Shab in Oman is your place to go!

Wahiba Sands

The Wahiba Sands also known as the Sharqiyah Sands is the second largest desert in the territory of Oman. The Wahiba Sands can be reached from the same highway that connects Bimmah Sinkhole and Wadi Shab.

The main desert camps start to appear as soon as you will reach the small town of Bidayah in the Sharqiyah governorate. The Wahiba Sands is famous for the golden color sand that makes up the desert, which looks like small granules of gold when the sun shines upon it.

The Wahiba Sands can only be reached by a 4×4 drive. If you do not own one or you didn’t hire a four-wheeler for your holiday in Oman, then the best alternative is to visit Al Reem Desert Camp, which can be easily reached by a sedan car.

Best Places To Stay In Muscat

Grand hyatt muscat resort.

The Grand Hyatt Muscat hotel is located in the area of Qurm Al Shatt which is right in the center of the city. It is a five-star resort which connects with a public beach just a short five minutes’ walk away from the beachfront dining street of Jawarat Al Shatti. The one night prices of Grand Hyatt Muscat can be on the higher end, however, during the peak summer months of May to August, the prices significantly fall as it is a non-season time in Oman.

Muttrah Hotel

The Muttrah hotel is a more budget option to stay at while in Muscat. As the name suggests, the hotel is situated in the corniche area of Muttrah, which is the most popular area to stay at for the tourists. It is a three-star hotel which offers a nice view of the sea and the mountains in the backdrop from most of the rooms. There are many Arabic and Indian budget restaurants to eat from near the hotel. Public transport is also easily accessible from the Muttrah hotel.

Program Itinerary

4 nights in muscat.

Day1: Upon your arrival at Muscat International Airport, a representative will meet you and drive you to your hotel in Muscat, where you will stay the night. Oman's capital, Muscat, is a thriving and modern city with stunning, whitewashed homes dotting the picture-perfect shoreline. This city has it all, from cultural landmarks to majestic nature and, with a history of trading and seafaring, offers a vibrant melting pot of international cuisines.

Day2: Muscat Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar On your way to Al Jabal Al Akhdar, or ‘the green mountain’, you will be taken through the charming village of Birkat al Mouz, where you can stroll through the area’s historic ruins and sample delicious dates from one of the many plantations; an authentic Omani experience. Cooler temperatures greet you in the mountains of Al Jabal Al Akhdar. This is where you can admire the famous fruit orchards that are laid out in terraces along the mountain slopes and watered by the falaj (traditional water system). From July to September, a range of fruits, including peaches, pomegranates, apricots, figs, grapes, apples, plums, and pears are grown here, along with almonds and walnuts. From March to April, the fragrance of roses in full bloom fills the air as rose water is distilled in the homes of the villagers. In the villages of Saiq, Wadi Bani Habib, and Al Ain, you can take in the traditional stone dwellings that have only recently been abandoned, and expansive plateaus that offer spectacular panoramas of the peaks, and gorges and valleys below. You will then be driven to your overnight hotel.

Day 3: Al Jabal Al Akhdar – Sharqiya Sands The journey will continue to the historic town of Nizwa. Formerly Oman’s capital, Nizwa is home to a wealth of cultural and architectural sites including the 400 year-old Nizwa Fort and one of the country’s oldest souks, the perfect opportunity to pick up a souvenir. Your next stop will explore a different side of Oman — the magical desert dunes. Nestled in the heart of eastern Oman, Sharqiya Sands is a vast, undulating sea of red and white dunes. You will be driven in a (4WD) on a tour over the playful waves, all while taking in the magnificent and timeless wind-blown desert landscape inhabited by the hospitable Bedouin and their wandering herds of camels. After an exciting day of dune-bashing, you will watch the mesmerising glow of the sun setting behind the sand dunes and spend the night beneath the stars in an overnight camp.

Day 4: Sharqiya Sands - Wadi Bani Khalid – Muscat Heading further south, you will reach the tranquil oasis of Wadi Bani Khalid. A favourite leisure spot among locals, its azure blue fresh-water pools are perfect for a relaxing dip. Next is a trip to Sur, a seaside town. You will be taken to a dhow-building shipyard to see artisans at work using centuries-old techniques, before breaking for lunch (at own cost) and then driving to your next destination along a scenic coastal route. The road winds along the rugged coast, through beautiful valleys, past white sandy beaches and lemon and mango plantations, until you arrive at Wadi Shab. This canyon is home to deep, crystal-clear pools and you may even discover a hidden waterfall inside a cave! If time permits, you will get the chance to stop at the limestone sinkhole in Bimah (Hawiyyat Najm), and the postcard-perfect Fins Beach.

Day 5: Departure to Khasab After breakfast, you will be met by the representative and driven to Muscat International Airport to catch a local flight for your 2-night trip to Khasab.

2 Nights in KHASAB

Day 5: Arrival On your arrival at Khasab Airport, a representative will meet you and drive you to your hotel, where you will stay the night. Khasab is a port city in Oman’s northern peninsula, Musandam. The city is wedged between steep cliffs and the sea, a feature you can't help but appreciate when when you fly in or sail into the harbour.

Day 6: Khasab City Tour The tour begins with a stop at the old Khasab Fort. Within its low, crenellated walls, the fort contains a large central tower which is thought to pre-date the fort itself. Having had extensive restoration work carried out in the late 20th century, the fort’s location offers excellent views and photo opportunities. Leaving the keep, the journey continues along the coastal road for about an hour to Bukha. Enjoy the spectacular scenery as you travel along the ruggedly beautiful coastal route and hone your camera skills at various photo stops. Overlooking the sea and with a backdrop of mountains, Bukha Fort is the final stop of the day and affords more breath-taking views from its gorgeous setting.

Please note: Guides for languages other than English are limited. Should a tour guide for your language be unavailable, the tour will be provided in English. Due to the marked differences between outside temperatures and those found in the places visited as well as the air-conditioned tour vehicle, it is recommended that you take a light jumper or cardigan for your comfort. This tour is unsuitable for guests with mobility problems or who use a wheelchair as it involves long periods of walking on uneven ground.

Day 7: Departure to Salalah You will be driven back to Khasab Airport to depart on your next journey to Salalah.

2 Nights in SALALAH

Day 7: Arrival Salalah, the capital of the Dhofar province, is the colourful and subtropical home to the world’s finest frankincense. The women of Dhofar are famous for their exquisite incense of frankincense, myrrh, sandalwood and flower essences, the aromatic scents filling the air throughout the towns and villages. Through the monsoon season (known as Khareef), the region is endowed with water wealth, which is responsible for the lush greenery that lends it a cooler climate and unique beauty. Once you touch down, your guide will transfer you to your overnight resort, where you can unwind for the evening.

Day 8: Half Day City Tour The first stop of this tour is the Museum of the Frankincense Land, located in the archaeological park for the ancient port of Al Baleed, a UNESCO heritage site. With two interwoven exhibits that detail Oman's lengthy history and maritime legacy, the museum provides a comprehensive look at Oman through the ages. Make a stop at the magnificent Sultan Qaboos Mosque and the official Palace of His Majesty the Sultan, before browsing the shops for high-quality frankincense, traditional Dhofari ornaments, clay incense burners painted with traditional patterns, and vibrant textiles. Your final stop is New Salalah’s gold and silver souq. Hosting a variety of stores, there are several options to shop for beautiful gold and silver ornaments, antique jewellery, beautiful stones, traditional Omani daggers (khanjars) and walking sticks. Once the half-day city tour ends, you will be driven to your hotel where you can relax or explore Salalah at your leisure for the rest of the evening.

Day 9: Departure (Check - Out Time 1200 Hrs ) After breakfast, you will be transported to Salalah International Airport to fly onward to your next destination—wherever that may be!

Scottie Scheffler shoots 73 on Saturday at PGA, snapping streak of 42 consecutive rounds under par

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The streak is over.

Scottie Scheffler shot 2-over 73 in the third round of the PGA Championship, snapping a run of 42 consecutive rounds under par on the PGA TOUR. Tiger Woods holds the record of 52 consecutive under-par rounds, set in 2001.

It was a tale of two rounds for Scheffler at Valhalla Golf Club. After a remarkable second-round 66 on Friday, a testament to his resilience and focus despite his early-morning arrest, Scheffler struggled to maintain the same energy and play on Saturday. The world No. 1 was 4-over through four holes and could not recover.

“I was battling as hard as I could but it seemed every time I birdied, I bogeyed the next hole, which is quite frustrating,” Scheffler said. “I was able to make enough birdies to get a decent round but just way, way too many mistakes today.”

Scheffler made a double-bogey on the par-4 second hole, unable to get the ball on the green after finding thick greenside rough with his approach shot. He three-putted on the third for a bogey and hit his tee shot out of bounds on the drivable par-4 fourth hole. After taking a drop near the green, Scheffler chunked his pitch shot and went on to make a bogey. The reigning Masters champion failed to sustain any momentum the rest of the day. Scheffler made five birdies but immediately bogeyed the next hole on three occasions.

It was an understandable performance, given the chaotic nature of Scheffler’s week. He acknowledged he woke up on Saturday feeling fatigued and didn’t go through his regular pre-round routine.

“I was definitely– did not feel like myself today,” he said. “Yesterday happened and I did my best to recover from it and come out here and compete today. I did a great job yesterday of coming out and competing, riding the adrenaline and this morning was definitely not my usual routine for a round, if that makes sense.”

Irrelevant to the streak, the round was costly in what was a big spot for Scheffler, seeking his fifth TOUR victory this season and the second leg of the major Grand Slam. After entering the day at 9-under, three shots back of the lead, Scheffler walked off the 18th green 7-under, eight shots behind leaders Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa.

It’s likely too big a deficit to overcome, but Scheffler will get a vital part of his team back on Sunday. Ted Scott, Scheffler’s full-time caddie, missed Saturday’s round to attend his daughter’s high school graduation but is expected to return for the final round. Scheffler’s friend Brad Payne filled in during the third round.

Scheffler’s under-par streak dated back to the final round of the 2023 TOUR Championship. His 41 consecutive rounds under par to begin the 2024 TOUR season is the longest streak to begin a season on TOUR since 1983.

“I came out here hoping to have a good round and wasn’t able to get it done which is pretty frustrating but I’ll come back and try again tomorrow,” Scheffler said.

2024 PGA Championship leaderboard: Collin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele top loaded list of contenders

Moving day lived up to its name saturday at the 106th pga championship.

Through 54 holes, the 2024 PGA Championship remains anyone's for the taking. A congested leaderboard filled with about as much star power as one could ask to see enters Sunday's final round at Valhalla Golf Club with some of the top golfers in the game jockeying for positioning attempting to win the second major championship of the season.

Leading the pack are a pair of American thoroughbreds; Collin Morikawa and Xander Schauffele are tied atop the leaderboard at 15 under. The two battled back and forth for most of Saturday's third round only to ultimately settle on the same score with matching birdies on the par-5 18th.

Schauffele will sleep on at least a share of the lead for the third straight night, mirroring his effort from Quail Hollow just a week ago. The Olympic gold medalist was unable to convert his edge into a trophy at the Wells Fargo Championship, but he will hope to have learned from his mistakes to fend off a worthy chasing pack as he seeks his first career major.

That pack obviously includes co-leader Morikawa, who has a chance to join rarified air with another major title. A victory Sunday would represent Morikawa's third career major triumph in just 18 such appearances; that would pull him past the likes of Justin Thomas, Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler, moving him alongside Jordan Spieth in terms of majors won.

Immediately behind the two men is the ever-electric Sahith Theegala at 14 under; he played alongside the two leaders in Saturday's final trio. After an uneasy start, Theegala scratched and clawed his way back into the mix thanks to six birdies across his final 10 holes.

The party doesn't stop there, though, as Shane Lowry joined the 62 club on Saturday with a record-tying performance to catapult his name into this championship at 13 under. He stands just two adrift alongside some of the heaviest hitters in the game: Viktor Hovland and Bryson DeChambeau.

Despite the low scores and despite the lack of traditional major championship conditions, Valhalla Golf Club has once again produced a high-quality major championship leaderboard. It's filled with full-time hitters only, and whoever emerges to claim the Wanamaker Trophy will undoubtedly be a deserving champion.

2024 PGA Championship leaderboard, Round 3

T1. Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa (-15): Both were rock steady for much of the afternoon until a late blink from Schauffele. After making an unlikely birdie on the par-3 14th, Schauffele grabbed a two-stroke lead and quickly made the biggest blunder of his tournament. Pulling his approach into 15 long and left, he ended up making six while Morikawa knocked in his 5-foot birdie bid to take the solo lead.

To Schauffele's credit, he punched back with birdies on the 17th and 18th to climb back into a share of the lead. Perhaps taking an early punch on Saturday (rather than Sunday) will prove to be beneficial as he will have his work cut out for him against Morikawa and the rest of the leaderboard. Morikawa, after an early bogey, played his final 16 holes in 5 under.

3. Sahith Theegala (-14): It did not look good early as Theegala made some poor mistakes with wedges in hand. He short-sided himself on No. 5 with a lob wedge leading to bogey and dropped another soon after. Unable to take advantage of the par-5 7th, Theegala's place in this championship was in jeopardy, but he roared back with vengeance. A back-nine 31 was highlighted by a chip-in on 15 when Schauffele slipped up.

T4. Bryson DeChambeau, Shane Lowry, Viktor Hovland (-13): Wow. What a bunch we have here! Lowry tied the major championship scoring record with his 62 by making just about everything on the greens. Hovland played a ho-hum bogey-free 66 and looks like the player that ran through the FedEx Cup Playoffs last year. Meanwhile, DeChambeau treaded water for most of the day and was buoyed by a chip-in eagle on the par-5 18th to get to 13 under and jump inside the top five. DeChambeau and Lowry have a chance to grab their second majors, while Hovland can make amends for last year's heartbreak where he went toe-to-toe with Brooks Koepka up until a double bogey on the 70th hole of the championship.

"I've got a good chance," DeChambeau said. "I'm not executing to the level that I know I can but playing well enough to give myself a chance, obviously. Got to keep strategizing around this golf course and putting the golf ball in the right areas and miss it in the right place and hit a bunch of greens out here. It's iron play. The key is iron play this week, and [I] haven't done my best but got up-and-down nicely. Man, I made a couple of clutch shots when I needed to."

T7. Justin Rose, Robert MacIntyre (-12) 9. Dean Burmester (-11)

T10. Justin Thomas, Tony Finau, Lee Hodges, Harris English, Austin Eckroat (-10): Thomas was seven off the pace at the 54-hole mark when he won his second PGA two years ago, but the mountain will be inherently steeper this time around given the names ahead of him. Thomas carded his second straight 67 thanks to some short-game heroics, and he enters the final round with an outside chance to claim his third Wanamaker Trophy just down the road from where he grew up. He ranks first in strokes gained tee to green and outside the top 65 in strokes gained putting.

"This week has exceeded all my expectations. It's been better. It's been more fun," Thomas said. "It's been more enjoyable than anything I really thought or could have imagined. I mean, I'm very, very excited for tomorrow, and it should be a lot of fun. But I'm pretty bummed that the week is almost over. Just enjoy tomorrow as much as I can and see what happens."

T15. Lucas Herbert, Keegan Bradley, Taylor Moore, Thomas Detry (-9)

T19. Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Hideki Matsuyama, Tom Kim, Russell Henley (-8): An opening bogey put McIlroy behind the eight ball (literally, he was eight strokes back), but then, he caught fire in the middle portion of his round. Four birdies in a row from Nos. 7-10 catapulted the four-time major champion's name inside the top 10. This streak could have easily been extended with an 11-foot birdie look on No. 11, an 8-foot birdie look on No. 12 and another great chance on No. 13 ... but all three ultimately fell by the wayside. A bogey on the long 14th halted any momentum McIlroy had garnered and made it almost certain his decade-long major drought will leak into next month's U.S. Open.

T24. Scottie Scheffler, Matt Wallace, Ryo Hisatsune, Mark Hubbard (-7): There's a chance the adrenaline that carried Scheffler to his Friday 66 drained his fuel tank down to empty for Saturday's 73 . A double bogey on No. 2 was the result of poor shots, but the next three dropped shots were all due to poor club choices and course management. He misjudged the par-3 3rd by about a club leading to a 3-putt bogey and he made the peculiar decision to try to carve a driver into the short par-4 4th -- when his counterparts were hitting fairway woods – and paid the price with another bogey. The world No. 1 clawed back but by then the damage was done.

Bryson DeChambeau chips in for eagle on the 18th hole to get himself within one of the lead! It wasn't a pretty iron performance from DeChambeau today, but he will head into tomorrow with a real chance at claiming major No. 2. In the same group, Viktor Hovland two putts for birdie to finish at 13 under as well. This leaderboard is something.

WOW, what a swing on 15

Coming to the hole with a two-stroke lead, Xander Schauffele walks off the green now one behind. He makes a brutal double bogey from the middle of the fairway after his second found the long stuff. Before missing his putt for 5, Schauffele saw Sahith Theegala chip in for birdie to get to 13 under (where Schauffele stands). Oh, and by the way, we now have a new leader in Collin Morikawa who makes birdie to get to 14 under.

Justin Thomas posts 10 under

Man, he had a chance to get one more, but that is Justin Thomas's second straight 67. The local lad is five off the pace at the moment and will have to wait and see what the 54-hole deficit is as Xander Schauffele just rolled in a rare birdie on 14 to get to 15 under.

Player That Can Make A Move On Moving Day

Jill Biden to tour Michigan, including the Upper Peninsula

3 day tour oman

First lady Jill Biden will head to Michigan on Thursday, spending three days touring the state with Douglas Emhoff, the husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, as the two hold events at various locations, including Up North.

The White House on Tuesday night announced Biden and Emhoff's itinerary, though no specific locations for the events were provided and it did not appear they would be open to the general public.

The tour was set to begin Thursday afternoon with the two making remarks at a political event in Marquette in the Upper Peninsula.

Following that, the two will fly to the eastern part of the Upper Peninsula, where they will speak at an event held by the Bay Mills Indian Community and the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. Then, on Friday, Biden and Emhoff will join a discussion on health care with the two Native American communities before touring the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie.

Later that day, Biden and Emhoff will fly into Saginaw County and speak at a political event in Midland in the Lower Peninsula before flying from there into Detroit. On Saturday, they will speak at a political event in Detroit before Biden travels to an event in New York City later that day.

President Joe Biden is scheduled to speak Sunday evening at the Detroit NAACP's annual Fight for Freedom Fund dinner in Detroit.

It's been more than a decade since a president held an event in the Upper Peninsula, with Barack Obama visiting Marquette in 2011 . Former President Donald Trump did fly to Menominee in the U.P. in 2020 but that was en route to an event in neighboring Wisconsin .

The 2024 PGA Championship leaderboard is crowded with Americans.

One American notably missing is Tiger Woods after he failed to make the projected cut line at 1-under.
