Cymru Wales

A unique family of fonts created to represent wales to the world....

A contemporary font family designed to represent Wales to the world in an authentic and creative way, putting the provenance and unique linguistic traits of the Welsh language front and centre. Whilst the bespoke typefaces take cues from the Welsh typographical heritage, special care was taken not to wander into the territory of pastiche or parody. All three commissions were developed in close collaboration with the Colophon Foundry with additional consultancy from Joseph Burrin.

Initially to create a single typeface that embodies the Welsh spirit and has the ability to communicate a ‘sense of place’ without the support of the extended (graphic) kit of parts. This resulted in the creation of Cymru Wales Sans but it soon became obvious that a broader and richer offering in terms of typographical hierarchy was needed. This lead to the commissioning of Cymru Wales Serif. A third, linked commission was the creation of Cymru Sans Transport for the Welsh Government’s ‘Transport for Wales’ organisation, which shares many aspects of the core Wales nation brand.

As well as taking cues from the Welsh typographical heritage — such as Llyfr Du Caerfyrddin, (the Black Book of Carmarthen) and Llyfr Coch Hergest, (Red Book of Hergest) — we sought inspiration from other languages such as Icelandic and also Arabic script for its exuberant and cursive character forms. Our aim with Cymru Wales Sans was to create a contemporary European ‘Sans with a unique 'sense of place' baked in — a trait that its ‘Serif’ equivalent would share — but given its more flowing single-line gestures and cursive forms it displays additional character defining traits such as the open bowls that feature in the B, d, dd, g, P, R and &.

All three commissions were developed with the Colophon Type Foundry with additional consultancy from Joseph Burrin.

As is so often the case with a high profile rebrand the core logo or marque becomes the ‘hero’ element. However, with the Cymru Wales brand the bespoke font family quickly assumed this position, overtaking the Ddraig Goch (or Welsh Dragon).

“The Cymru Wales font family is an outstanding fusion of historic Welsh and contemporary, accessible typography. The trailblazing placement of disabled people at the heart of the Cymru Wales typeface design contributes directly to its high degree of legibility. The creation of unique Welsh digraphs provide a visual highlight to the phonic which is elegant, educational and quite simply genius. Once introduced into the public domain Cymru Wales has huge potential to promote 'a sense of place' and 'identity', making Wales and the Welsh language very relevant in the 21st century.”

Our aim with the Cymru Wales font family was to create contemporary European typefaces with a unique personality and a 'sense of place' baked in. The key to the latter were the eight digraphs (unique letter combinations) that feature in the Welsh alphabet as well as the curved 'd' character that has quickly become the cornerstone of both the Sans and Serif.

Further stylistic elements

Given a serif typeface’s flowing single-line gestures and cursive forms, Cymru Wales Serif displays additional character defining traits such as the open bowls that feature in the B, d, dd, g, P, R and &.

Informal and informal in tandem…

Two years after the creation of CW Sans it became obvious that a broader and richer offering in terms of typographical hierarchy was needed. Cymru Wales Serif is designed for longer, editorial reads. Using both typefaces together offer designers an extensive and layered ‘kit of parts’.

Accessibility

Independent accessibility research has proven that the core characters of ‘Cymru Wales Sans’ are more legible than ‘Arial’ whilst those of ‘Cymru Wales Serif’ are more legible than ‘Times New Roman’. And crucially, rather than being deemed as ‘linguistic obstacles’, the digraphs were perceived as valuable educational legibility assets — highlighting the fact they are actually different characters, that in turn are pronounced differently.

Different strokes for different folks

5 sectors. 1 font family..

Each pillar of the Welsh Government needed a distinct graphic language as they target very different markets and therefore need to present a unique and ownable personality whilst also being firmly rooted in the overarching ‘mother brand’. We assigned different weights and cuts of the font family to each of the sectors. To illustrate this ‘Trade & Invest’ (being business orientated) uses CW Sans uppercase, whereas ‘Tourism’ requires a more approachable and informal graphic language and so uses CW Sans Medium, set in sentence case.

Creative Wales

Breaking things up.

‘Creative Wales’ required a looser and more spirited ‘language’ and so we created a customised, slithered version of CW Serif which naturally lends itself to animation.

The ‘Food & Drink’ sector

TFW Cymru Transport

Created exclusively for Transport for Wales, 'Cymru Sans Transport' is an all-caps affair based on 'Cymru Wales Sans' and sees the letters stencilled in a utilitarian manner which also references TfW’s core 'T' roundel.

Moving forward

Whilst first and foremost our aim was to create a font family for the Cymru Wales Brand, that would represent Wales in an authentic and creative way externally, we also aimed to educate people on the characteristics and sounds of our unique language. With careful application these typefaces can help evolve our identity as a nation. With these foundations now in place, we're looking at further ways to introduce the typefaces into ‘the everyday’. One (currently speculative) project is 'CAMBRIA' — ‘A Journal of Record for Wales’.

As part of a thorough rebrand by Amsterdam- and Cardiff-based design studio Smörgåsbord, we were commissioned by the Tourism department of the Welsh Government to create a new type family for all things Welsh. The brief was to create a series of fonts that would contemporise the country’s forward-facing tourism materials while also nodding to Wales’ history within the larger context of Great Britain and the world.

visit wales font

Though rooted in the Latin alphabet, the written Welsh language omits certain Roman stalwarts (j, k, q, v, x, z) and comprises 28 total characters with the inclusion of eight digraphs, or letter-combinations.

visit wales font

These digraphs — ultimately treated as true ligatures in the instances of Ch, ch, dd, Ff, ff, Ll, Th, th — would come to set the tone for the proposal put forth: a series of three typefaces, each with Standard and Headline variants, the latter of which would put the provenance of the Welsh language front and center.

visit wales font

Looking to the history of the land itself, we took cues from Celtic and Gaelic typographies to inform several of the consonants (d, h, l, m, n, u), taking special care not to wander into the territory of pastiche or parody. These forms comprised the infrastructure for the more expressive, headline cut of the type family (Cymru — Welsh for ‘Wales’), while Wales Sans acted as the more staid (and, indeed, English-language) counterpart.

Opentype coding then allowed end-users at smörgåsbord and beyond to fluidly switch back and forth between english-language and welsh-language settings, while also giving designers a tool with which to create visual and cultural gestures within the typography itself. in addition, with the help and credentials of a welsh language professor — and because, really, this is the kind of stuff we strangely live for — we revived a long-dormant medieval welsh variant of the letterform ‘v’ (whose roman counterpart had since been omitted from written welsh)..

visit wales font

In imbuing the commission with more than its original brief asked for, the creation of Cymru Sans & Wales Sans gave the foundry a means of pursuing historical research while also increasing the value and versatility of the outcome for the client.

A new national identity: Smörgåsbord Studio rebrands Wales

Wales has been given a rebrand by Smörgåsbord Studio. The new identity eschews many of the tired and nostalgic cliches about the country to provide a contemporary and multifunctional brand for the Welsh Government. A new campaign, Year of Legends featuring actor Luke Evans, is bringing the message to new audiences and shows the nation as a place to visit, trade, invest and live .

“We were charged with creating a compelling and visually consistent approach to help reveal new, engaging stories to complement the country’s rich history, beauty and culture,” says Smörgåsbord’s Dylan Griffith. “A nation brand built to be applied across all consumer facing government sectors – from tourism through to business to food & drink."

The brand incorporates a core marque, a bespoke typeface, tone of voice and photography guidelines, and advice on experiential initiatives. “It draws together disparate strands of activity, creating a ‘glue’ that unites the great people and places of Wales: digitally, physically and culturally,” says Smörgåsbord.

“The core idea can be summarised as ‘inherently Welsh with a global outlook,” says Dylan. “A unified brand approach with the power to create a confident new way of thinking and behaving. At its heart is a contemporary rendering of the familiar Dragon icon that re-establishes the link with our national flag.”

Developed by Colophon Foundry, the bespoke typeface , Cymru Wales Sans, is inspired by Welsh Typographical heritage and incorporates digraphs that are unique to the Welsh language. Dylan explains, “Our research informed the look, feel and personality of several of the consonants (d, h, l, m, n, u) and crucially five of the eight diagraphs that are wholly unique to the Welsh language, Ch, ch, dd, Ff, ff, Ll, Th, th.”

The Welsh fonts selection

Choose a suitable font that supports the Welsh language. We have a vast collection of font families to meet any creative needs, whether you are working on extensive text blocks, crafting headings for websites or printed publications, printing on various materials, including fabric, or designing signs and posters. Each of the fonts includes the Welsh alphabet. A wide range of characters, currency and punctuation symbols, font styles, and OpenType features will allow you to apply the same Welsh fonts to different projects. Characters of the extended Latin writing system that include diacritical marks will increase the options of using the font for any country. Each font demonstrates flawless technical quality. Many fonts in our collection include a variable font style that can be used to create a unique style for your project. With the help of tags, you can select a font that aligns with your desired style and identity: geometric or dynamic, versatile or classic, powerful or delicate. The search feature categorized by purpose will also be useful, as you can look for fonts suitable for magazines, websites, newsletters, or advertising. Each font from the collection can be customized technically or graphically. Customization gives an opportunity to add or remove a letter, add the company's logo, or reduce the character set to make the resulting font file lighter. With the Trial License, a free testing period is available for the studio's fonts. To get the Trial License, click the "Trial font" button and fill out the form. The trial font is identical to its commercial version in character and technical set. A typeface has been designed for the Welsh language

A typeface has been created for the Welsh language which celebrate the country’s heritage.

The fonts have been designed by the Cardiff office of design studio Smörgåsbord, in collaboration with the Colophon Foundry. Graphic designer Joseph Burrin also consulted.

visit wales font

The three fonts that make up the Cymru Wales typeface are Cymru Wales Sans (originally created in 2017), Cymru Wales Serif and Cymru Sans Transport, which is used for Transport for Wales (TfW).

Welsh is one of the oldest living languages in Europe, but only 29.8% of the country’s population are able to speak it. This is the first time that the Welsh alphabet has been translated into a digital typeface. It is part of a wider ambition for the Welsh Government’s plans to have 1m Welsh speakers by 2050.

The typeface is part of the Wales Nation brand, and has been commissioned by the Welsh government.

Design inspiration

visit wales font

The aim for the project was to create “contemporary European typefaces with a unique personality and a ‘sense of place’ baked in”, according to Smörgåsbord. The studio designed during the country’s identity branding – including the original Cymru Wales Serif typeface – two years ago. That place branding showcased a “painterly” red dragon .

During the research period, the studio looked at “Welsh typographical heritage”, such as the Black Book of Carmarthen (thought to be the earliest surviving manuscript written purely in Welsh) and the Red Book of Gerfest, a 13th century manuscript also written in Welsh.

The studio also looked to other languages such as Icelandic and Arabic for inspiration, owing to their “exuberant and cursive character forms”. Smörgåsbord also looked to the tradition of stone letter carving in Wales. However, the studio was careful not to “wander into the territory of pastiche or parody”.

visit wales font

There were language-specific considerations involved in designing these new typefaces. The Welsh language has eight digraphs, a pairing of two letters that represents one sound. The curved ‘d’ character also became a “cornerstone” of both the Serif and Sans versions.

Cymru Wales Serif and Cymru Wales Transport

visit wales font

Since the introduction of the original typeface two years ago, Smörgåsbord said that it became “obvious” that a wider range was needed. Cymru Wales Serif is designed for “longer, editorial reads”, and can be used in collaboration with the original Sans font.

visit wales font

A third font, Cymru Sans Transport, has been created for TfW. It is all-caps and based on CW Sans, and does not contain any of the digraphs. The letters are stencilled in a “utilitarian manner”, which is also a nod to TfW’s ‘T’ roundel.

visit wales font

Creating a “distinct graphic language”

Different sectors of the Welsh government target different audiences. To meet these needs, the studio assigned different weights and cuts of the fonts for each of the sectors. The Trade & Invest sector uses the Sans typeface in uppercase. Tourism, meanwhile, needed something more “approachable and informal graphic language” and uses Sans Medium in sentence case.

Creative Wales, a new agency within the government that promotes growth in the creative industries, uses a “slithered” version of the Serif typeface.

Greater legibility

According to independent accessibility research, there is a greater degree of legibility for these new fonts. Cymru Wales Sans is more legible than Arial, and Cymru Wales Serif is more legible than Times New Roman.

In the above animation, CW Serif is depicted in red while the Sans version is green.

Prince William forced to cancel royal visit last-minute

The prince of wales has made a last minute decision to cancel a planned royal engagement.

Rebecca Lewis

The Prince of Wales has made a last minute decision to cancel a trip which had been planned for May 23 2024.

The Prince will no longer attend the scheduled engagement following updated guidance from   Buckingham Palace , and in a statement to HELLO!, Kensington Palace said: "We look forward to rescheduling in the future and are extremely sorry to anyone who has already travelled."

Smiling Prince William shaking guest's hand at Buckingham Palace

The decision comes after King Charles and Queen Camilla announced a change to their own schedules  as a result of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak revealing a general election would take place on Thursday July 4, 2024.

Releasing a statement on Wednesday, the royal couple confirmed all royal engagements "which may appear to divert attention or distract from the election campaign," had been canceled or postponed. Buckingham Palace said the King and Queen sent their "sincere apologies" to those affected.

The news comes after King Charles met with the PM on Wednesday and agreed with his request to dissolve Parliament.

The monarch welcomed the Prime Minister to Buckingham Palace in October 2022. Rishi Sunak told the King "the country is behind you", following his cancer diagnosis

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said on Wednesday: "Following the Prime Minister's statement this afternoon calling a General Election, the royal family will, in accordance with normal procedure, postpone engagements that may appear to divert attention or distract from the election campaign. Their Majesties send their sincere apologies to any of those who may be affected as a result."

The results of the July 4 election will determine if Rishi Sunak's Conservative Party is voted out of government. If so, the King will be set for the third prime minister of his short reign. He welcomed Mr Sunak as his second PM just six weeks after acceding to the throne, following the resignation of Liz Truss.

The royal couple's appearances in Portsmouth and Normandy in June to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day will go ahead as scheduled.

While they are due to join the Ministry of Defence and Royal British Legion's commemorative event at the British Normandy Memorial at Ver-sur-Mer, Prince William is due to mark the poignant anniversary alongside the Canadian government  at Juno Beach Centre.

He will be joined by Canadian armed forces personnel and World War II veterans. The father-of-three is also expected to attend the international commemorative ceremony at Omaha Beach, and he will be joined by veterans and 25 world heads of state.

School holidays

The Prince of Wales is likely to take a break from royal duties next week and spend the May half-term holiday with Prince George, ten, Princess Charlotte, nine, and six-year-old Prince Louis.

While Kensington Palace never disclose details of the Wales family's private plans, they often spend the children's school holidays at their Norfolk home, Anmer Hall.

Upon his return to work after the half-term break, William will take part in D-Day commemorations at the beginning of June.

It's also been widely reported that William will be an usher at the Duke of Westminster's wedding to Olivia Henson at Chester Cathedral on 7 June. Hugh Grosvenor, 7th Duke of Westminster is godfather to the Wales's son, Prince George, and Prince Harry and Meghan's son, Prince Archie.

The Princess of Wales, who is receiving preventative chemotherapy following a cancer diagnosis, is not expected to attend.

Wales has become the first UK nation to join the metaverse.

The launch of Wales in the metaverse hopes to give virtual visitors from all over the world the chance to see what the country has to offer.

Tourism body Visit Wales has created the immersive experience with the aim of platforming some of Wales's experiences and attractions.

Around 600 million people visit the metaverse each year, across a number of platforms.

The Welsh metaverse is being hosted on platform Spatial.

Organisers say they believe Wales is also the first European nation to use this approach to market itself as a tourism destination.

The announcement comes after a report by a committee of MPs published last July found Wales "lacked a coherent brand" to attract overseas visitors.

Presenter of Doctor Who Unleashed and former gaming journalist Steffan Powell attended the launch.

He said the metaverse experience would give potential visitors to Wales "a flavour of all the exciting things you can see and do on a holiday in Wales".

The Welsh government's tourism minister, Hannah Blythyn, said the metaverse had been created "to reach new audiences".

"By showcasing some of the best Wales has to offer visitors in this incredibly innovative way, we're putting Wales in an online sphere where millions of people already meet every day," she added.

Visitors to the virtual Wales can take on quests including building an interactive itinerary which includes real-life Wales-based activities.

"Wales punches above its weight when it comes to innovation and technology," said iCreate founder Dawn Lyle.

"We're excited to be a part of this initiative, with the virtual space opening up new worlds of possibility to reach new audiences."

The Wales metaverse has now opened to the public and can be entered on smartphones, tablets, laptops, computers and via Meta Quest headsets.

Why Kate Middleton's Tatler portrait has divided fans

The Princess Of Wales

A new portrait of the Princess of Wales is provoking strong reactions , just days after a controversial  likeness of King Charles III  was revealed.

Tatler magazine shared the cover art for its July 2024 edition on  social media , featuring a portrait of the former Kate Middleton by British-Zambian artist Hannah Uzor, a “fellow mother of three,” per the publication.

This is Tatler's third annual cover portrait. Prior years featured art of Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III.

In the forefront of a gradient blue background, the painting shows Kate in a floor-length white gown and cape with a blue sash and pendant. Her hands are folded back into one another as she dons a tiara and her hair pulled back low. She appears to be wearing the same dress she wore to King Charles’ first state banquet.

On social media, the portrait has stirred a wide range of reactions, with many saying the portrayal lacks a resemblance to the princess.

“What a horrible portrait for a beautiful Woman,” one person commented.

Another wrote, “This is not HRH The Princess of Wales. God knows who it is, but it is not HRH.”

Another commented, “This is not resembling her at all.”

“I really respect the artist but I also don’t see Catherine here,” one person added.

Some did seem to see the vision, though.

One commented, “Love this so much,” with three red heart emoji.

“This is so lovely,” another wrote.

TODAY.com has reached out to Tatler Magazine and Uzor, but has not heard back by the time of publication.

What does Kate’s portrait mean?

Uzor’s approach to art, according to her website , is “driven by her interest in history, particularly, diasporic culture and its manifestation in personal and public memory.”

Her 2020 series of portraits highlighted figures from the African diaspora who played a role in English history.

The artist told Tatler of Kate, “She has really risen up to her role. She was born for this. She carries herself with such dignity, elegance and grace.”

Watching  Kate’s video in which she announced  she was undergoing cancer treatment affected the portrait “without a doubt,” Uzor said.

“All my portraits are made up of layers of a personality, constructed from everything I can find about them,” Uzor told Tatler.

The “green-blue” hue of the background was inspired by Kate’s eye color, “and also trying to get elements of being in a garden and on water.” She cited rowing being one of Kate’s favorite sports.

What does this have to do with King Charles’ portrait?

The release comes days after a  controversial portrait of Charles  was unveiled May 14.

British artist Jonathan Yeo painted the  dramatic depiction of the 75-year-old king , which stands as the first official portrait of Charles since his  coronation in May 2023 .

In the painting, Charles stands in the red uniform of the Welsh Guards. He poses amid a red background with his hands over a sword. On the king’s right shoulder, a monarch butterfly hovers.

Yeo  told the BBC  that he opted to depict Charles in his military uniform as he would appear in the traditional royal portraiture in the past.

He said he wanted to “make reference to the traditions of royal portraiture but in a way that reflects a 21st century monarchy,” according a statement released by Buckingham Palace last year.

As for the “vivid color” red, Yeo said on his  website  that the shade was intended to “echo the uniform’s bright red tunic, not only resonating with the royal heritage found in many historical portraits but also injecting a dynamic, contemporary jolt into the genre with its uniformly powerful hue.”

The monarch butterfly was Yeo’s way of of illustrating how Charles’ role in the royal family has evolved over the years, he told the BBC.

“In history of art, the butterfly symbolizes metamorphosis and rebirth,” explained Yeo, who was commissioned by The Drapers’ Company to paint Charles portrait in 2020 when he was still the Prince of Wales.

Along with also being a symbol of the king’s environmental causes, Yeo said on his website that the butterfly is a “visual contrast to the military steeliness of the uniform and sword.”

Catherine, Princess of Wales portrait becomes latest royal painting to spark debate

visit wales font

By Jack Guy, CNN

(CNN) — A new portrait of Catherine, Princess of Wales has stoked controversy online, with some royal fans criticizing the work for its portrayal of the future British Queen.

The painting, by British-Zambian artist Hannah Uzor, features on the cover of the July issue of Tatler magazine. It aims to honor the “strength and dignity” of the princess, according to a statement from the publication sent to CNN Thursday.

It depicts Catherine during her appearance at the first state banquet of King Charles III’s reign, and Uzor said she studied photographs of the princess in the process of creating the work.

“When you can’t meet the sitter in person, you have to look at everything you can find and piece together the subtle human moments revealed in different photographs: do they have a particular way of standing or holding their head or hands? Do they have a recurrent gesture?,” she said in the statement.

Uzor also revealed that Kate’s recent video announcing a cancer diagnosis informed the work.

“All my portraits are made up of layers of a personality, constructed from everything I can find about them,” she said in the statement.

However, not everybody appreciated the portrayal of the princess.

“This is dreadful – somehow, I’m not sure the artist is a fan of the Princess – it looks like a bad GCSE project,” reads one comment under a post from Tatler on X.

“This looks nothing like the Princess of Wales. It’s so awful, it’s disrespectful,” reads another.

“I agree with the sentiments of strength and dignity but the portrait lacks any resemblance to the Princess of Wales,” said another.

However, some did praise the work, with one calling the painting “beautiful.”

“Am I the only person who likes this? It’s art, not a photo,” wrote another commenter.

And it wasn’t just social media users who reacted to the painting.

Alastair Sooke, chief art critic at UK newspaper The Daily Telegraph, said in an article that the painting was “intolerably bad” and “shows no flicker of resemblance to its subject.”

“Has there been a flatter, more lifeless royal portrait in living memory?” Sooke wrote. “Beneath a Lego-like helmet of unmodulated, monotonously brown ‘hair,’ this Princess of Wales has as much charisma as a naff figurine atop a wedding cake.”

Kate Mansey, royal editor at The Times of London, was also non-plus.

“I’m not quite sure what to say about this one, except, hmm…” she wrote on X.

The backlash follows a similar discussion surrounding the first official portrait of King Charles III since his coronation, which was revealed earlier this month.

The 8.5 by 6.5-foot painting by British artist Jonathan Yeo depicts the monarch wearing the uniform of the Welsh Guards, sword in hand, against a fiery red background that appears to almost swallow him whole, as a butterfly looks like it’s about to land on his shoulder.

While the King is reportedly happy with the portrait, others criticized the lurid red brushstrokes, with one person likening it to a “poster for a horror film.”

Conservatives defend record and Labour call for change as election campaigns kick off in Wales

  • General election
  • Prime Minister

visit wales font

The run-up to the election has well and truly kicked off in Wales, with the country's main parties setting out their plans for the future.

The Prime Minister visited the Vale of Glamorgan on Thursday morning promising investment into the country and taking aim at the Welsh Government's record on NHS waiting lists.

Meanwhile, in north Wales the First Minister told voters people want to see change at the election, urging people on the street that Labour will "make the country work" for them.

On Wednesday, Rishi Sunak announced the country would go to the polls on 4 July. But despite a long six weeks of campaigning ahead, all sides hit the ground running on day one.

The Prime Minister visits South Wales

The Prime Minister met brewery staff in the Vale of Glamorgan where he discussed his party’s achievements during a brief campaign stop.

He promised to act boldly and to deliver a secure future for people in Wales if he is re-elected in July.

Defending his track record, Mr Sunak said he had invested in north Wales rail electrification, created two freeports and helped ease the cost of living crisis for millions of people.

The Prime Minister took aim at the Welsh Labour Government's record on the NHS. He said, "the NHS in Wales are squarely down to the Welsh Labour government who have more funding ahead than the rest of the UK".

However, in an early gaffe for the Prime Minister, he also asked if the workers were looking forward to the football later this summer as a potential source of revenue, despite Wales not qualifying for the Euro 2024 tournament.

A little way down the road, voters in Barry were unconvinced with the all the parties' promises. One said, "I just wish they'd do a better job than they are doing", adding she hasn't got any faith in any of the parties.

Another told us she was undecided ahead of the election, but wanted politicians to do more to support small independent businesses and bring down energy costs.

The First Minister in North Wales

Meanwhile, the First Minister was in Rhyl. Vaughan Gething urged voters not to "give up on politics", adding "there is a positive choice for Labour".

"It really is time for change at a UK government level. Two Labour governments working together I think can deliver for Wales and Britain", he said.

Speaking to ITV Wales, voters in the former Labour strongholds along the north Wales coast seemed divided. The so-called 'red wall' in north Wales collapsed in 2019 with the Vale of Clwyd, Wrexham, Clwyd South and Ynys Mon all turning conservative.

This time around, the Labour Party are expected to pour their efforts into regaining these constituencies.

Constituents in Rhyl told us they want to see change from any future government, with an emphasis on the health service. Though, some told us they might not go to the polls at all in July.

One vote told us she wants change, adding "we have to go forward, don't we. There's no point standing still, especially when things aren't working."

Another lady told us she was sick of politics - "I've gone right off it now", she said.

Plaid canvassing in West Wales

In Carmarthenshire, Plaid Cymru representatives hit the streets to drum up support. The party's leader, Rhun ap Iorwerth told ITV "Plaid offers that alternative to the red vs blue, that gives us a chance to be heard at Westminster."

At the moment there is only one Plaid Cymru member of parliament, Liz Saville Roberts.

Mr ap Iorwerth has previously attacked both the Conservatives and Labour's records, accusing the parties of not putting Wales interests first. He said, "The Tories have crashed the economy and hard-working people are still paying the price of high bills.

"Labour, on the other hand, just take Wales for granted. None of the London parties will put Wales first", he said.

By YURAS KARMANAU and DASHA LITVINOVA

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday evening arrived in Belarus for a two-day visit. The Russian leader’s trip to the neighboring and allied country is one of several he is taking as he begins his fifth term in office. Putin traveled to China earlier this month, and is expected in Uzbekistan on Sunday. In Belarus, Putin is to hold talks with his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko. Russia used Belarus as a staging ground in the war in Ukraine and moved some of its tactical nuclear weapons there.

Visitor levy or 'tourism tax'

There are no imminent plans to introduce a visitor levy in Wales. A consultation launched on 20 September 2022 outlining proposals for a visitor levy, which local authorities could choose to apply or not. The careful process of developing proposals for a visitor levy, translating them into legislation, and then implementation spans years, and would ultimately be subject to approval by the Senedd. Visitor levies are commonplace across the world, with revenues used to the benefit of local communities, tourists and businesses. A levy would be discretionary for local authorities based on the needs of their areas.
