Experience Stepping Stones – Historic Home of Bill & Lois Wilson

A journey to Stepping Stones  is special. Some travel from thousands of miles to see where Bill Wilson, cofounder of Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.), and Lois, cofounder of Al-Anon Family Groups (A.F.G.) lived, worked, and greeted visitors and friends.

Upstairs you will picture Lois working at her desk, sowing the seeds of Al-Anon Family Groups . Contemplate the time she spent in the mid-1900s arranging historic photographs and material in the “Gallery,” where you can browse the memorabilia and her notes about many items. Think about the origins of the collection’s nearly 10,000 authentic items, including many gifts.

Then walk up the hill to Bill’s writing studio, “Wit’s End.” See his large oak desk and consider his thoughtful deliberation in writing over 100 A.A. Grapevine magazine articles, including those that evolved into the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions book. Imagine the fireplace alight as Bill responded to letters from around the world and drafted speeches to be given in front of audiences at A.A. International Conventions, the U.S. Senate, and medical society meetings. See the cigarette burn marks along the edges of his desk. View the bed with the Southwestern blanket that Lois fashioned into a bedspread and wonder if Bill rested there during bouts of depression or writer’s block. Imagine the visits with friends who gave him the wall hangings featuring the Serenity Prayer in various languages. See his spiritual advisor Father Ed Dowling’s cane and crucifix. These are just a few of the timeless artifacts in the cinderblock retreat that Bill built with a friend from A.A.

Wander the gardens and grounds just like Bill and Lois did. Read the historic markers and dive into the display of archive highlights in the Welcome Center. Enjoy a cup of coffee and browse the gift shop before and after your tour.

My Travel Shop is the online extension of a national network of Travel Experience Stores owned and operated by Argo Icarus Travel (Pty) Ltd. The company has been in operation since 1996 specializing in the retail of quality travel accessories and services. International Driving Permit (IDP) is a legal document that provides validity of your local driving licence as well as easing the burden in the event of an accident.

Advantages of International Driving Permits (IDP)

IDP is a legal travel document regulated by the United Nations, and it is for your protection and safety. IDPs can be helpful if you find yourself in need of identification or assistance. Your IDP is a valid form of identification in more than 150 countries worldwide and contains your name, photo and driver information in several languages – so it is understandable to most of the local officials and authorities of the countries you visit

Carnet de Passage en Douane (CPD) is the international customs document, which covers the temporary admission of motor vehicles. “Passport” for your car!

The Carnet de Passages en Douane, or CPD is an international customs declaration identifying the vehicle crossing country borders on its route. This action of crossing borders consequently may imply several temporary importations throughout the journey. It is also the internationally-recognized guarantee of the payment of any customs duties and import taxes chargeable if the vehicle is not re-exported or if any other problem arises. It facilitates travellers the entry into the country of final destination as well as a smooth and quicker border crossing, with fewer formalities, and without on-the-spot payment of guarantees in the countries in between while driving your vehicle to another country.

Advantage of Carnet de Passage (CPD)

• Using a Carnet is an alternative to leaving a cash security deposit with a foreign government and reimbursement formalities.
• Eliminates the need for national temporary importation documents
• Facilitates entry formalities at border posts and port of entries. Most countries will accept carnets and some prefer to use their own documentation.
