What people love about greenland tours.

This is an amazing tour, exploring the world largest island. I am the oldest in the group of young dudes from different parts of the globe. Being an old bloke in the group it’s not easy. Traversing and maneuvering the parched land of Greenland and trekking the icecap…whoa! that’s incredible to feat. Our tour expert Eva is amazing, she walks and talks with full of energy. She knows the area well enough that she could explain with gusto. If you’re looking for comfort tour, this is not for you. Transportation…majority by foot and speed boat. The group of ten bonded together. We’d amazing swaddled moments together. Sleeping in a tent in the middle of nowhere, very very cold, making pee in the middle of the night walking few hundred feet groping in the dark if no flashlight…that was fun, good luck if you trip. Eating our lunch anyplace, anywhere but place good enough to rest and eat. The only issue I’d was buying a few minutes of WiFi to use that didn’t work, waste of money. I want to write more but it’ll be a book….Anyway, thanks to the Tasermiut Tour team but Eva takes the lion’s share.
it was absolutely amazing!!! Trip of a lifetime

Destination must-sees.

Greenland Must See 1

Known as the “Iceberg Capital,” the town of Ilulissat translates to the Greenlandic word for “iceberg.” Nearby is the Ilulissat Icefjord, containing icebergs produced by the Sermeq Kujalleq Glacier. This single Icefjord produces the most icebergs outside of Antarctica, but only a total of 10% of Greenland’s icebergs are created here. This Icefjord was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004.

Greenland Must See 2

Disko Bay is located on the west coast of Greenland and is within the Arctic Circle. Surrounded by a breathtaking natural landscape, take in towering basalt mountains and patches of greenery on the sloping hills. Admire the frosty glaciers scattered throughout the water and dock in Qeqertarsuaq, known as “The Big Island.” Disko Bay is also home to the famous Eqip Sermia Glacier.

Greenland Must See 3

Kangerlussuaq

Glide along the icy waters of the Kangerlussuaq Fjord and take in the snowcapped mountains jutting up out of the tundra. Admire the breathtaking blend of natural beauty through a mix of grassy flatlands and glacial peaks. Over 100 miles long, this massive waterway is one of the main crossroads of Greenland. In Greenlandic, the fjord’s name actually translates to “big fjord.”

Greenland Must See 4

Home to around 100 people, Itilleq is a remote settlement that pays tribute to its Inuit ancestors. Residents make their living hunting, fishing, and trapping. Take in the picturesque village on foot to get a firsthand feel of what life would be like with only the basic necessities. The town strives to preserve their unique heritage and cultural traditions.

Destination Must-Dos

Greenland Must Do 1

Witness the calving of Eqip Sermia Glacier

Stretching over three miles wide, the Eqip Sermia Glacier is one of the most active glaciers in Greenland. Watch as blankets of melting ice slide off the glacier and thunder into the frigid water below. Listen to the booming crash when the air pressure is released, echoing monstrously into the still air. Get close to the glacier to safely take in the shades of white and blue.

Greenland Must Do 2

Enjoy a kaffemik

Feel like a local when you participate in a kaffemik, a traditional celebratory gathering that features coffee, dessert, dancing, and music. In Greenlandic, the name kaffemik translates to "via coffee." Get an inside look at the local community and allow the welcoming lifestyle to embrace you. Warm up with a comforting cup of coffee and join in on the cozy celebration.

Greenland Must Do 3

Tour Sisimiut

In the town of Sisimiut, wooden homes dot the hillsides, a rainbow of vibrant colors that contrast with the surrounding white snow. This area has been inhabited for over 4,500 years and features a quaint blend of historical and modern life. Sisimiut is home to around 5,400 citizens, making it the second-largest city in Greenland. Tour the historic Colonial Quarter, Sisimiut Museum, and the iconic Blue Church.

Greenland Must Do 4

From valleys to hills, Greenland offers some of the best hiking trails in the Arctic Circle. Admire icy waterways and picturesque mountains as you venture along the road less traveled. Strap on your best pair of hiking boots and start climbing – the views will undoubtedly be worth it.

Greenland expert 2

Be prepared to wake up early most days to watch the sun rise over the glaciers and fjords. Due to Greenland’s northern location, daylight appears to last longer in this area so you can make the most of your day.

Greenland Expert 3

Whale watching is a must when in Greenland. From humpback to minke, many different types of whales call Greenland their home. Keep an eye out for these large mammals when they are surfacing.

EPIC Greenland Tours for 2024: The Best Holiday Packages

Greenland is a land of phenomenons with its midnight sun, glacial landscapes, and unique arctic wildlife. Plus, there’s the rare chance to see the skies dance with the northern lights – if you’re  really  lucky. But with the world’s largest island comprising 80% ice and very few roads, getting around Greenland is very difficult if not impossible on your own. That’s why pretty much everyone who visits Greenland does so via some sort of organized tour.

As a marine nation, the best way to absorb the wonders of this icy tundra is by joining a cruise or marine-based adventure. No, don’t panic – Greenland cruises aren’t your typical cruise. You’ll constantly be in and out of your trusty zodiac steed, flitting between the glacial towers and fjords. Fortunately, we have friends in handy places who run fantastic boat trips to Greenland that’ll take you to all the places you want to see.

Now, we know you don’t want to spend your time trawling over different packages. So, we’ve rounded up the best tours in Greenland for you. All you need to do is pack (and save up a few dollars first).

Best Greenland Tour

Best Greenland Tours

Best overall tour in greenland – essential greenland: southern coasts and disko bay, best budget tour of greenland – explore greenland and spitsbergen: fjords and glaciers, best greenland tour for photographers – northwest passage: epic high arctic, best adventure tour in greenland – greenland adventure by sea, land and air, most unique tour in greenland – spitsbergen, jan mayen, greenland and iceland, quick guide to visiting greenland, final thoughts on the best greenland tours.

Not many people can say they’ve explored this unique island nation. This massive realm of glaciers and fjords feels like you’re cruising into an entirely different world.

As we said, all tours in Greenland are marine expeditions. That means you’ll live aboard a comfy ship , stopping off to explore villages and landmass via zodiac boat, kayak, and even helicopter on some tours. All you need to do is decide which parts of Greenland appeal the most to you, and the most convenient port of embarkment/disembarkment. Oh, and how deep your pockets are – Greenland isn’t for shoestring backpackers.

It’s time for you to sail into a part of the world few will venture! Let’s find out which of these Greenland holidays is best for you.

Abandoned Arctic ghost towns, plunging fjords, and colourful Arctic tundra – this trip is a cocktail of culture and natural wonders. Experience the east, south and west coasts of Greenland – each has its own unique features. In the east you can view glaciers deep within the fjords, the south is steeped in Norse history, and the west has icebergs and mountainous landscapes aplenty.

The best Greenland tours give you an opportunity to connect with local communities, and that’s what you’ll do on this agenda. Besides meeting small sheep-farming communities, you’ll get to explore the Greenlandic capital, Nuuk – one of the most northern cities on the planet.

Note that this one starts and ends in Reykjavik, Iceland , if you fancy continuing your arctic adventure.

Southern Coasts and Disko Bay Greenland

Who is this tour best for?

Couples, families, travellers of all ages. Anyone who wants to experience as much of the Greenlandic coastline as possible.

  • Expensive (this will be a theme – we warned you)
  • Some adventure activities (such as kayaking) cost extra and must be booked in advance

greenland tourism packages

  • Number of days: 14
  • Price: $5,943 USD

You might gawk at us when we say this is the best budget tour in Greenland, but as we said – the arctic ain’t cheap. There really is no such thing as a truly bare-bones budget trip for Greenland. This 2-week cruise gives you a glimpse into the unspoiled wilderness of Greenland, Svalbard, and Spitsbergen . Zodiacs and your own two feet will take you even deeper into this glacial paradise of fjords, bays, and inlets.

Spend days gazing out upon frigid ocean horizons looking out for orca, humpback, and minke whales. On land, you might sight arctic foxes and reindeer! You’ll also have the chance to a stop at the most remote town in Greenland – Ittoqqortoormiit – and learn how the 450 inhabitants live. While we’re on dry land, you have a chance to meet some huskies here as well.

This loop trip deposits you back in Longyearbyen, from where you can arrange your onwards travel. Alternatively, you could opt for the Arctic Highlights tour, also offered by GAdventures. This one finishes in Reykjavik, which may be more convenient for your onward travel plans.

Fjords and Glaciers Greenland

Couples, families, bucket-listers, wildlife enthusiasts. Phillip Pullman fans who dreamed of visiting Svalbard. Those hungry for knowledge – your expedition includes daily lectures and educational talks.

  • Arranging your inward and outward travel to Longyearbyen (a territory belonging to Norway) might bump up the costs depending on where you fly from
  • Due to the timings of luggage drop-off and embankment, you will also need to arrange your own accommodation the night prior to the tour

greenland tourism packages

  • Number of days: 17
  • Price: $19,140 USD
  • Group Size: 8 min, 200 max
  • Accommodation type: En suite cruise ship cabins/ comfortable hotel
  • How many meals included: None

Feeling flush and ready for an adventure that you (and your bank manager) will never forget? This epic expedition gets you hiking over permafrost, wildlife spotting, and cruising past fjords, glaciers and icebergs on a daily basis.

You’ll encounter abandoned research stations, places where explorers of old met their demise, and tiny Inuit communities. Pitched as immersive expedition travel, you’ll hear the crash of glacier shards falling into the icy ocean. If you’re up to the challenge, take a polar plunge yourself. All tours in Greenland are a match made in heaven for photographers. But considering the distance you cover in this one, you can get really creative as you document your journey.

Intrepid runs a very similar version to this trip, the Northwest Passage: In the Footsteps of Franklin . It’s the same number of days, same price, and same start/endpoints. However, the cruise hugs the Canadian mainland rather than Greenland.

Epic High Arctic Greenland

Older travellers, couples, bucket-listers, wildlife enthusiasts. Canadians and North Americans (the trip starts and ends in Toronto)

  • Yup – expensive
  • No meals are included and certain activities such as kayaking are not included in the price

Wanna know how to pack like a pro? Well for a start you need the right gear….

These are packing cubes for the globetrotters and compression sacks for the  real adventurers – these babies are a traveller’s best kept secret. They organise yo’ packing and minimise volume too so you can pack MORE.

Or, y’know… you can stick to just chucking it all in your backpack…

  • Accommodation type: Cruise ship cabins (en suite)/ comfortable hotel

Access the depths of Southern Greenland’s fjords by zodiac, kayak, and helicopter, and hike on the Ice Sheet itself. Adventurers will love the chance to hike in this isolated tundra. Deep within the fjord system, you’ll see dramatic landscapes ranging from snow-capped mountains to fields blooming with flowers. Yeah – we know, not exactly what you’d expect from holidays in Greenland of all places, despite the irony of the name.

This tour has a very fluid itinerary, so you can expect each day to bring something unexpected. Beginning and ending in Reykjavik, you can continue your quest in Iceland.

Greenland Adventure by Sea Land Air Greenland

Modern-day adventurers, couples, travellers of all ages, bucket-listers, wildlife enthusiasts.

  • Activities could be hindered if the weather doesn’t cooperate
  • At full capacity, the boat may feel busy

If you think Greenland is a radical destination for travel, wait until you get to Jan Mayen. This is a volcanic island drifting right in the middle of the Arctic Ocean, surrounded by ice. We know, the mind boggles.

Besides this, the trip chucks in all the usual (albeit amazing) suspects. Unforgettable zodiac rides, spectacular fjords and trips peering out trying to spot an elusive polar bear. But, there is no standard arctic circle trip – you just never know what the weather or mother nature will throw at you.

Need to transpose your start and endpoints? Then book the Spitsbergen, East Greenland and Iceland – Northbound tour instead. It’s a very similar route, although it misses Jan Mayen.

Spitsbergen Jan Mayen Greenland

Couples, families, bucket-listers, photographers, wildlife lovers, those interested in geology

  • Another option which is especially pricey
  • Depending on your nationality, you may need visas for three different countries – Norway, Greenland and Iceland. Do check before you book.

Best Time to Visit Greenland

Best Time to Visit in Greenland

With long days and the promise of the midnight sun, summer (June to September) is the typical season to plan a vacation in Greenland. The temperatures are a tad warmer, and you are more likely to sight arctic wildlife. It’s not just travellers who enjoy frolicking in the 24-hour sun! However, the drawback is that there will be increased tourists and those 200-capacity cruisers might fill up easily.

Having said that, we still reckon it’s one of the top hiking spots in North America for the summertime .

While it’s not a guarantee, there is a chance of sighting the Northern Lights in Greenland. You are most likely to spot this phenomenon during dark, clear nights from September until the beginning of April. Choose a winter tour to Greenland if this is high on your agenda.

There’s no right or wrong – whatever time of year you choose to explore Greenland, you’re in for a visual treat.

Travel Insurance for your Greenland Tour

When booking organised trips to Greenland (or anywhere else, for that matter) you will probably need to take out travel insurance. If you rock up to orientation without proof, your CEO is going to send you straight back home.

Realistically, you’re not looking at any imminent danger. But, natural disasters can strike (remember the havoc reaped by Eyjafjallajökull in 2010) and you’ll want that cover just in case. Plus, flights can go bust, and while the chances of theft on your Greenland vacation are slim, breakages or damage to expensive camera gear are less so.

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

What to Pack for Greenland

What to Pack Greenland

One thing you’ll need for any of these tours in Greenland is a strategic packing list. It’s going to be cold, wet, and wintery. In fact, it’ll be downright freezing – this is the Arctic after all. Plus, whichever tour you take, there are some mandatory bits of kit you’ll need. We’ve noted those below, along with a few other essentials.

Below – the VA team should try to link to as many TBB gear review articles as possible – just a reminder.

  • Camera (bring additional memory cards and batteries)
  • Binoculars (highly recommended)
  • Drybag (essential for Zodiac landings)
  • First-aid kit (as well as the obvious essentials, bring a remedy for seasickness. Just in case!)
  • Polarised sunglasses
  • Thermal layers – don’t forget your sexy thermal undies
  • Lighter layers for downtime – all boats are heated sufficiently
  • Fleece/thermal/ down jacket
  • Waterproof trousers (mandatory for any Zodiac landings)
  • Swimsuit (in summer, it is possible to take the polar plunge)
  • Hat, scarf and gloves
  • Footwear with excellent grip (open-toed shoes aren’t permitted in public spaces on the expedition ships)
  • Sunscreen and SPF lip balm
  • Kindle, podcasts, journal , and a pack of cards
  • Outlet adapter (check your booking handbook for electricity voltage onboard)

packable travel medical kit

Things go wrong on the road ALL THE TIME. Be prepared for what life throws at you.

Buy an AMK Travel Medical Kit before you head out on your next adventure – don’t be daft!

And that’s a wrap on the five best tours in Greenland. Now you can evaluate which itinerary speaks to you and go ahead and take the polar plunge to book your arctic voyage.  While all the trips we’ve listed share a common theme of being marine expeditions, the sites do vary significantly. Remember that this expansive island varies depending on which coast you choose to explore. Plus, the further north you sail, the frostier the conditions.

Still can’t decide which Greenland vacation is for you? Our top pick is the Essential Greenland: Southern Coasts and Disko Bay tour. It’s not as costly as the other tours and gives you a well-rounded experience of Greenland’s culture, geology and wildlife.

Whichever trip you pick – Greenland is going to blow your mind. Can we come too?

Because it was necessary to change the dates of the Extra Services (cultural walks/boat trips/etc) of our prepaid tour; we were not adequately dressed for the boat trip thru the icebergs. This was only due to time limitations after arriving from our Iceland flight. Otherwise, everything was wonderful; especially our beautiful view at Hotel Artic!!!!! Erlas Sonja was very nice to work with; we had no issues with any vouchers. Many thanks for making our adventure to Greenland a truly memorable and treasured trip. Our experience was a very positive one. Got your contact from an article in International Travel News written by someone we had met on a trip to Svalbard with several years earlier.

Frequently Asked Questions About Greenland

If you're thinking of visiting Greenland, you might have a few questions. For your convenience we’ve collected the most commonly asked ones below. You can also find more detailed booking and payment information on our general FAQ page .

1. Is Greenland a country?

Greenland is an autonomous country that’s part of the Kingdom of Denmark. It’s self-governing and has representatives within Denmark's parliament.

2. What continent is Greenland on?

Greenland is technically part of the North American continent, but culturally and politically it is closer to Europe.

3. How big is Greenland?

Greenland is the world's largest island and it covers an estimated 2.17 million square kilometres (836,330 square miles) of land.

4. Who discovered Greenland?

The first recorded settlement of Greenland was by Erik Thorvaldsson, or “Erik the Red”. A Norse explorer, he was exiled from Iceland and journeyed North West with his family, looking for a new home. He eventually discovered Greenland in 982.

5. Why is Greenland called Greenland?

Despite its name, around 80% of the country is covered by an enormous ice sheet, meaning it’s more white and blue than green. According to Norse sagas, Greenland’s founder Erik Thorvaldsson named it to attract more people to live there, and not as an accurate description.

Find out more fun facts about Greenland in our blog.

6. What is the population of Greenland?

Greenland has a population of around 56,000, of which 88% majority are Greenlandic Inuit.

7. Who lives in Greenland?

Greenland is inhabited by Greenlandic Inuits and Danes.

8. What language do they speak in Greenland?

Greenlandic is the official language, with Kalaallisut (West Greenlandic) being the standard dialect. There are also different dialects spoken in North, South and East Greenland. Danish and English are also commonly spoken.

9. What is the capital of Greenland?

An important seat of government, tourism and finance, Nuuk is the capital city of Greenland.

10. What to do in Greenland?

One of the most requested activities is to see the local wildlife, with day trips to spot whales and polar bears available in Greenland. Of course, these tours cannot guarantee viewings but they are led by experienced locals who know the land and sea.

Another animal-orientated activity is dog sledding. On these guided day tours, you get to meet a pack of huskies before they pull you along on your sled and speed through the stunning countryside.

Hiking is also a popular activity with visitors to Greenland, many of whom decide to trek the well-known Arctic Circle Trail between Kangerlussuaq and Sisimiut.

Greenland’s towns and cities also have their charms and a visit to the capital Nuuk is not to be missed, with colourful houses, mountainous scenery, museums and galleries to discover.

Taking a voyage to Greenland’s floating glaciers and ice caps is on most visitors' “must-do” list. You’ll get to experience serene sea views and immense icebergs that will take your breath away.

To experience the best of Greenland’s activities and attractions, we recommend visiting in the summer months. If you have your heart set on seeing the northern lights, we'd recommend a trip to Iceland , Lapland or Northern Norway instead.

Find out what to expect in Greenland by reading about Hilmar’s arctic expedition .

11. What's the temperature in Greenland?

Depending on when you visit and the area you explore, temperatures in Greenland can vary from a chilly -50 °C (-58 °F) in the winter to an average of 10 °C (50 °F) during the summer.

12. Do you need a visa to travel to Greenland?

Depending on where you’re visiting from, you may need a visa to visit Greenland. If you have a British, American, Australian, New Zealand or Canadian passport then you won’t need a visa.

However, if you’re from a country that requires a visa to enter Denmark, then you you’ll need to apply for one as Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Please keep in mind, Greenland is not part of the EU, so EU regulations on free movement do not apply.

13. How can I fly to Greenland?

The easiest way to fly to Greenland is via Iceland or Denmark, where you can take a domestic plane to Nuuk or Ilulissat. Keep in mind that when you book a Nordic Visitor package tour to Greenland, your round-trip flights from Iceland to Greenland are included in the tour and organised for you, saving you the bother of booking and coordinating it all yourself.

14. How much luggage can I bring on my flight to Greenland?

On your flight from Iceland to Greenland, you’ll be allowed a checked bag and a carry-on. Your hand luggage should be a maximum of 8 kilograms (17 pounds). Your checked bag should be a max of 20 kg (44 lbs).

15. How much is a trip to Greenland?

You can find the price of your Greenland tour by adding your departure dates to the calendar. Please bear in mind though that, due to the limited availability of flights to Greenland, there might be a supplement charged.

16. Can I choose the arrival date?

Yes, you can choose your arrival date. However, due to limited domestic flights between Iceland and Greenland, we recommend that you book your package from the available dates online to ensure a seamless journey to and from Greenland.

17. How much can I customise my tour?

We can only customise certain aspects for you as dates are limited. You’re able to add nights in Iceland before or after your trip to Greenland, or you can combine your tour with another destination such as Iceland or Denmark. This is why it would be better for you to look through packages, and decide which would best suit your travel wish list.

18. When should I book my flight tickets?

We recommend that you look over flights for timings and dates, but hold off purchasing until you’ve booked your preferred tour and received confirmation from your dedicated travel consultant. Once you’ve had your tour secured, you should then choose and pay for your flights.

Why? Once you’ve been introduced to your travel consultant, you’ll have all the information you need to make informed choices on timings. This is especially important as flights to Greenland are limited. If you have any questions, you can always contact us for booking advice.

19. How should I dress for Greenland?

The weather in Greenland is changeable, so we advise that you prepare for it by dressing and packing sensibly. Day to day, we suggest you wear good walking boots, plenty of thermal woolly layers, and waterproof trousers and coat. Don’t forget to bring a warm hat, socks and gloves as well. These are especially important as temperatures can drop suddenly and you’ll want your extremities to be protected from the cold.

Here’s a basic list of what to bring on your Greenland holiday:

  • Fleece jacket/lightweight wool sweater
  • Rainproof/windproof jacket
  • Waterproof trousers
  • Sturdy walking shoes with a good tread/grip
  • Hat (toque/beanie)
  • Thermal underwear
  • Waterproof hiking boots
  • For icy areas, you may want to bring ice cleats, ice grips or anti-slip soles

Why Travelstride

Additional details, what you should know before going on a greenland tour, what to pack for traveling in greenland.

How best to answer this perennial question - how cold will I be in Greenland? - while encouraging travel to this pristine natural region? While it’s true that the average temperatures do not normally exceed 10° C (50° F) - this being an Arctic climate, after all - let’s focus on the fact that the air quality up there is some of the best in the world.

Take a few deep breaths and drink in those far-reaching views, thanks to the fine air quality and low moisture. If you’re visiting the southern part of Greenland, you can expect slightly higher temperatures - more than 20° C (68° F) during the months of June, July and August.

Pack well, according to the tips below for what to pack for your Greenland tour, and you’ll be ready for anything Mother Nature throws at you.

What to Pack for the Summer in Greenland

  • Bug repellent and a mosquito head net
  • Water bottle or CamelBak
  • Warm jacket
  • Rain jacket and rain pants
  • Sturdy hiking boots
  • Tennis shoes or other comfortable footwear
  • Long underwear
  • Fleece jacket

What to Pack for the Winter in Greenland

  • Long underwear (top and bottom)
  • Waterproof mittens
  • Thin wool gloves to wear inside mittens
  • Fleece pants
  • Goretex (or similar material) pants and jacket
  • Winter boots

Is It Always Cold in Greenland?

This depends on your interpretation of “cold.” The average temperatures in Greenland do not typically exceed 10° C (50° F), yet June through August, you might feel temps into the mid-60s.

While your Greenland tour certainly isn’t going to boast any balmy days, take advantage of the low moisture and excellent air quality to enjoy some of the most far-reaching views you’ll have in any destination on Earth.

Do Only Cruises Visit Greenland?

Cruises to Greenland are a great way to embrace the country’s rugged shoreline and sail in and out of various cities along the coast. Typically, the best time to cruise Greenland is between June and October - the shoreline is more navigable at this time and the temperatures are warmer.

However, cruising is not the only way to visit Greenland. There are several land tours that bring visitors ashore to experience Greenland’s glaciers (including Sermeq Kujalleq, the largest glacier in the world outside of Antarctica), charming cities, UNESCO World Heritage Site, enormous national park, polar bear hunting grounds and more.

What Is the Population of Greenland?

Greenland is the world’s largest island and houses the massive Greenland Ice Sheet, so as you might expect, the population of Greenland is widely dispersed. There are 18 municipalities on the island and this is where the majority of residents live.

Those who don’t choose to live in one of these larger towns  live in villages in outlying areas. Among the residents, you’ll hear the official languages of Greenlandic and Danish, as well as quite a bit of English.

When Is the Best Time to Travel to Greenland?

So, in a country where cold is always expected and the biggest physical characteristic is an enormous ice sheet, when is the best time for a Greenland tour? This depends a bit on what you’re hoping to get out of your Arctic exploration.

Summertime breathes new life into Greenland’s towns and villages, bringing residents out of hibernation for hiking, kayaking and simply sitting with friends to enjoy the midnight sun - from the end of May until the end of July, you will rarely see the sun set.

Hoping to dog sled and catch the best views of the Northern Lights in Greenland? Come between December and March. The days are short, the temperatures are dropping, but usually, the sun is shining bright (even though its for a brief period of time each day).

It’s also possible to start seeing the Aurora Borealis in the autumn, October and November, and this shoulder season also brings with it smaller crowds and lower prices.

Who Are Greenland Tours Good For?

It’s obvious that visiting Greenland is a different animal than, say, a tropical South Pacific vacation, a sensory smorgasbord in Morocco or a culture-packed trip through the capitals of Europe. So, who will enjoy a Greenland tour? We think visiting the world’s largest island is an excellent choice for travelers who:

  • Are flexible . If you’re open minded and aren’t tied down to a particular schedule or must-see list on your Greenland tour, you’re in the right place. The weather can be a little frenetic and may decide for you whether it’s a day for dog sledding or a day to cozy up with a hot buttered rum and a novel.
  • Happy to unplug . Here in one of the most remote areas of the world, you’re not always going to have reliable WiFi. When it is available, it may come at a higher cost that you’re used to. So, take advantage of your Greenland exploration to disconnect and instead, reconnect with your travel companions and the incredible world around you.
  • Like to travel by foot, air or water . Believe it or not, there aren’t many miles of roads in Greenland and none of the towns are connected by road. Be prepared to travel either under your own power (hiking) or by boat or airplane.

A four day intense trip through the fjords of South Greenland: exploring some of the largest glacier fronts in the area with our adventurous zodiac boats, helicopter flight with impresive views of the Inlandis or Greenlandic Polar Ice Cap and unique crampon excursion into the ice. Hotel overnight stays, except a magical night in our wilderness Camp surrounded by glaciers.

Greenland travel packages, route map

As trip highlights:

  • Speed boat transfers among icebergs
  • An overnight stay at the Qaleraliq glacier camp

  • Boat excursion to the glacier fronts of Qaleraliq
  • Admire the Inlandis or Greenland’s Polar Ice Cap
  • Narsaq town
  • Northern lights since mid August

Day 1. Speed boat trip to Narsaq city

Flight from Iceland (Keflavik international airport) or from Copenhagen to Narsarsuaq in South Greenland. Reception at the airport and meeting information. Transfer to the harbor and one hour speed boat trip through the Eriksfjord -where we will meet our first icebergs- to Narsaq, the third most populated city in South Greenland. Your guide will accompany you visiting the local fish market, the fur shop or the Greenlandic museum. Time off to stroll around in the city and enjoy the beauty of its colourful buildings or the harbor.

Overnight stay at the Hotel Narsaq. Twin / Double room with private facilities.

Day 2. Towards the Qaleraliq Glacier Camp

In the morning we will set off for the Qaleraliq Glacier Camp, navigating with our zodiac boat among icebergs towards the ice cap. We will arrive to a magical and isolated camp set on a sandy beach, which contrasts with a spectacular view of the Qaleraliq glacier tongues.

Greenland travel packages, Qaleraliq glacier camp

After enjoying some rest in this magical environment we will navigate along the glacier fronts, admiring the beauty of their vertical ice walls and numerous icebergs as we approach them along their more than 10 kilometres descent to the sea. From there we will start the ice excursion. An impressive hike using crampons (organised to be suitable for all travellers) on one of the oldest masses of ice in the planet. We will explore its crevasses, drains, caves, seracs, and other ice formations, which give an incredible, labyrinthine quality to this glacier. An expert mountain guide, specialist in Glacier Science, will be in charge to ensure the safety of the group during the trip. Picnic lunch in the ice or at the camp. Dinner at the camp, allowing our senses to enjoy the unbelievable views and the thunderclap roar of the icefall from seracs.

Accommodation in 4 bedded basic but comfortable rooms of Domo “loft”.

Our commitments

Environmental sustainability. We believe in a responsible tourism with unspoilt nature of Greenland, so all our trips are planned to have the least possible impact on the environment.

Safety. All our guides are expert about Greenland and know when either it is or it is not convinient to carry out an activity. Our safety records are unmatchable.

Local population. Our Inuit Climate Change Patrol   ensures the maintanance of Inuit traditions by involving local people in utilization of a sustainable tourism.

Inuit Windsled

To collaborate in the deepest knowledge of the most unfamiliar places on the planet and do so without affecting ecosystems. This is the philosophy that marks the Inuit Windsled Project, the only totally ecological vehicle designed for research in Polar lands.

Based on the ancient knowledge of the Inuit peoples, the Windsled developers have managed to create a means of transportation that combines tradition with modern means through kites that harness aeolian energy.

Inuit Climate Change Patrol;

In Thule today sled dogs are still used and the inhabitants go in search of their liveliho od in cloth-lined kayaks, but we are witnessing the last generation of true Inuit hunters. Most of these people are between 45 and 60 years old and the next generation aren’t continuing in these traditions… Are we witnessing  the last dynasty of the Kings of Thule?

This fear is the germ of the Inuit Climate Change Patrol, current project led by Ramon Larramendi (founder of Greenland.net)

View of Kulusuk village in Greenland on a clear sunny day with colourful houses in view

About 4,500 years ago, early man migrated thousands of perilous miles from Canada into Greenland.

And when they got there and saw the ice-covered mountains, glaciers and resident polar bears, they stopped and said ‘Yep, this looks like the spot.’ And who can blame them? It may be cold, but the unfenced wilderness of the world’s biggest (and least populated) island is worth wearing a scarf 11 months of the year for. Although technically still part of Denmark , Greenland is now self-governing and has a proud Inuit culture. And with no crowds, little crime and only a few roads to break up the endless ice flow, it’s easy to see the appeal (just don’t forget that scarf).

Best time to visit greenland.

Generally the summer months of June, July and August are the time to see Greenland, but it does depend what you’re looking for. At midyear the country isn’t as chilly as it can be (temperatures can rise as high as a sweltering 15°C…) and you’ll get to experience the phenomenon of the midnight sun. Of course, if it’s the night lights of the aurora borealis you’re after, the time to go is definitely October through to March, when temperatures can plummet to well below freezing. Pack accordingly.

Geography and environment

When 84 per cent of your country is covered in the world’s largest ice sheet (and the rest is classed as permafrost), geography may seem kind of self-explanatory. But Greenland’s coastal fringes are where most of the magic happens. Plunging fjords, rocky promontories, trundling glaciers calving off into the Labrador Sea. Most of the settlements along the western coast are colourful wooden houses painted every colour of the rainbow. Towns and settlements are virtually cut-off from each other (roads are very rare in Greenland), so most trade and movement is done by sea and air.

Top 5 wildlife experiences in Greenland

1. humpback whale.

Humpback whales migrate to the cooler waters of the Arctic to feed each year. It’s a mammoth journey, often spanning thousands of kilometres (and all at travelling just a few kilometres per hour). That’s probably why humpbacks like to blow off a bit of steam in Greenland. Around Aasiaat, Qeqertarsuaq and Sisimiut between April and November it’s not an uncommon sight to see a 30-tonne humpback leaping clear out of the water.

In the Middle Ages, Inuits and Norse tribesmen would trade narwhal horns for fabulous sums (they were the marine equivalent of a unicorn). Thankfully the horn trade is over and these beautiful toothed whales can swim and eat in peace. They’re usually found in Melville Bay and around Qaanaaq, where their spiralling three-metre tusk can be seen poking through the surface of the water.

3. Polar bear

This is the world’s largest land predator, and the chances of seeing one increase when you’re on the water. Cruising along the coast of west or north-east Greenland is your best shot at spotting one of these creatures, but don’t hold your breath – they can be quite aloof. But the good news is that if they are out there, they are quite easy to see due to their off-white fur standing out against the snow-white ice.

4. Arctic fox

Technically there are two types of Arctic fox in Greenland – the classic white and the blue. Both species change colour depending on the season in order to blend in with the rocky landscape and the polar ice sheet. Arctic foxes live on an almost exclusive diet of lemmings – so when lemming populations drop, so do the number of foxes. Thankfully numbers are strong, and the Arctic fox isn’t a threatened species.

5. White-tailed eagle

Don’t forget to look up every now and then: Greenland has a huge and colourful variety of birdlife. The biggest and most striking bird is the white-tailed eagle (known as the nattoralik in Greenlandic). You’ll usually find them circling along the west coast down to Cape Farewell, hoping to find a cod, char or smaller sea bird to stoop. These birds are as rare as they are beautiful, and are officially a protected species in Greenland.

How to travel to Greenland on a Budget

Jump to chapter

Published: 17/06/2020

Reading time: 7 minutes

It is no secret that Greenland is not a budget travel destination. However, there are ways to reduce the cost of travel to this intensely beautiful and remote Arctic nation. Read on to discover how to get the most bang for your buck when planning your trip to Greenland.

Traveling in the Arctic is not cheap. Iceland and the more northerly reaches of other Scandinavian countries are also quite expensive. But making the trip to Greenland is absolutely worth the money.

Basking in the  Midnight Sun  or the magical  Northern Lights . Seeing  icebergs ,  glaciers , colorful houses and  Inuit culture .  Dog sledding ,  skiing and snowshoeing ,  snowmobiling ,  sailing ,  whale watching ,  kayaking , and  endless hiking trails  await you if you make the journey. Here’s how to make it more affordable.

The tourism industry in Greenland is still developing. Currently, there are a limited number of accommodation options and tour operators so it is best to book as much as you can as early as possible. In particular, if you are thinking about visiting  Ilulissat  in July-August, we advise you book at least 6 months prior to ensure you get your first preferences.

  • Search and book all tours throughout Greenland
  • Book accommodation in Greenland

A large part of the expense of visiting Greenland is contained within the cost of the airfares. By booking your flights early, you may be able to score a good deal. In particular, look for “Takuss” return airfares on  Air Greenland  flights. There are several restrictions (including a minimum stay of 7 days), but the tickets are much cheaper than their normal prices.

  • Book your flights to Greenland

It is also important to note that the checked luggage restriction for both  Air Greenland  and  Air Iceland Connect  is 20kg. Make sure you stay under this limit as it is often strictly enforced and excess baggage fees are expensive.

Visit only one or two areas, maximum

Greenland is an enormous country.  It is one third the size of the USA or Australia, and the size of the whole of Western Europe.

Greenland compared with USA

In addition, there are a limited number of domestic flights each day, so the idea of just hopping on a plane to get to the next place does not work the same in Greenland as it does in other places.

For these reasons, when planning your trip, you should limit yourself to just one or two areas. In particular, we recommend concentrating on just one area if your vacation is 7 days or less.

Flight Itineraries

If you are planning to visit 2 or more areas, see if there is a way to make a round-trip. Although  Kangerlussuaq  is the main international airport, it is also possible to fly directly to  Nuuk  (from Iceland) all year round, and there are usually additional direct routes during the Summer from both Copenhagen and Iceland to  Narsarsuaq  and  Ilulissat .

Some example itineraries:

  • Reykjavik –  Nuuk  –  Ilulissat  – Reykjavik
  • Copenhagen –  Narsarsuaq  –  Nuuk  –  Ilulissat  –  Kangerlussuaq  – Copenhagen
  • Reykjavik –  Kulusuk  ( Tasiilaq ) –  Nuuk  –  Ilulissat  – Reykjavik

In each case, you arrive in Greenland at one location and depart from another. This saves significantly on airfares.

Airbus from Air Greenland in Kangerlussuaq

The best place to get an overview of flights into each major town is in the “How to get there” sections in each of the  Ultimate Guides  here on Guide to Greenland (direct links to each can be found in the footer of the webpage). However, you will need to dive into the details before finalizing your itinerary as some flights only operate a few days each week.

The Sarfaq Ittuk Passenger Ferry

If you plan to visit the South and West coasts of Greenland during April – January, the Sarfaq Ittuk passenger ferry is a great alternative to flying and also cheaper. It runs on a  weekly schedule  from  Qaqortoq  in the South to  Ilulissat  in the North (only as far as Sisimiut during the Winter), with very brief stops in more than 10 destinations along the way.

The entire journey one way takes about 4 days, but it is a lovely, relaxed way to experience Greenland and meet local people. We highly recommend it if you have the time.

The red Sarfaq Ittuk passenger ferry at dock in the habour in Sisimiut

Note that this is not a cruise ship but rather a local ferry, so stops are typically 15 -30 minutes in most ports. The exceptions are Sisimiut (2hrs), Qaqortoq (3hrs), Ilulissat (4 hrs) and Nuuk (13.5 hours northbound, 2 hours southbound). Only during a northbound stopover in Nuuk and perhaps in Ilulissat will you have enough time to book a day tour or do extensive exploring.

Think Beyond Hotels

Another major expense on your trip to Greenland will be accommodation. Almost all major towns in Greenland have at least one 3-star (or better) hotel, but there are other options that may end up being cheaper.

Bar at the Hotel Angmagssalik in Tasiilaq, East Greenland

For super-thrifty and self-sufficient explorers, it is possible to pitch a tent for free almost anywhere in Greenland. Obviously, this is not going to appeal to most people, but it is an option.

The cheapest “real” accommodation is likely to be in a hostel. Many have both dorm rooms and private rooms available, are actually quite lovely inside with large common rooms, and the added advantage is that they provide a kitchen for guests to use (more on this below).

Common area in the Hostel Narsarsuaq in South Greenland

Another possibility is to stay in a guesthouse, B&B, or an apartment.  The “Accommodation” section in each of our  Ultimate Guides  is a great place to find the different options, or you can try  AirBnB  as well.

Prepare your own meals

Almost all food has to be imported to Greenland, which makes eating more expensive than in most other countries.

The cheapest way to save money on food is to buy ingredients from the supermarket or market and prepare most meals yourself. To do so, you will also need to stay in an accommodation that provides a kitchen for guests to use. Alternatively, you could prepare very simple food for two meals and eat out for lunch or dinner.

Shared kitchen at the Hotel Icefjord Apartments in Ilulissat

A top tip if you would like a reasonably cheap hot meal for lunch (in particular) or dinner, is to check out the deli sections of the supermarkets in the larger towns. They often have things like ribs, chicken, hot chips, etc., but may have sold out by evening.  The supermarkets (even in the small settlements) also usually have a good bakery section, where you can buy freshly baked bread and several different kinds of pastries.

We highly recommend that you try some local Greenlandic food while you are visiting, as it is quite different from what you find almost anywhere else in the world. Look for dishes that feature reindeer, musk ox, fish, prawns, seal or whale, as these meats are what have traditionally been (and continue to be) hunted here.

The Traditional Greenlandic Buffet at the Hotel Sisimiut

Most restaurants offer several dishes that feature Greenlandic ingredients or, if you have the opportunity, make sure you indulge in a Greenlandic Buffet. This will allow you to sample a whole range of different foods in the one meal. Check out the “Restaurants and Cafes” section of our  Ultimate Guides  for more information.

While Greenland does have internet, it will generally be much slower than you are used to and also very expensive. In addition, mobile phone coverage is limited to towns and settlements – so as soon as you head out to explore, you will lose reception.

Although some accommodation providers are now including WiFi access in their room prices, if you are staying somewhere that does not, do yourself a favor and unplug for the duration of your visit. Relax and enjoy being unreachable for a while. Just make sure you let your family and friends (and work colleagues) know that they will be unlikely to reach you while you are away.

Be selective with your excursions

While we all want to do as much as possible when we visit a new country, that may just break the bank on a trip to Greenland. There are plenty of things that you can do independently (see our  Ultimate Travel Guides  for ideas), but many of the key experiences can only be done with a guided tour.

  • Find and book a tour anywhere in Greenland

We suggest thinking carefully about your “must-dos” for your visit to Greenland and make a prioritized list. Book as many of the tours as your budget allows, and then be prepared to explore on your own.

Turist kayaking near giant icebergs in the fjord

Book a vacation package

OK – while this is not necessarily the cheapest way to travel, if you want someone else to take care of all the arrangements and logistics for you and you want to just pay a fixed price and know there are no hidden extras – you should consider visiting Greenland on a  vacation package .

  • Search and book all vacation packages

There are holiday packages available to all parts of Greenland, and several also include flights from  Iceland  or  Denmark . These are particularly convenient if you have limited time or are not used to traveling independently.

Flying over beautiful Nuuk Fjord

Come visit us in Greenland

While Greenland may not be the cheapest destination on the planet, it is one of the most spectacular (even if we say so ourselves). It is one of those “bucket list”, “once in a lifetime” experiences that are worth every penny you spend.

Just keep in mind all the cost-saving measures we’ve suggested here as you plan your trip, and we look forward to welcoming you to Greenland!

New analysis highlights the value of foreign tourism in Greenland

In the summer of 2023, eight key players in tourism and society came together to produce an in-depth analysis of the economic impact of foreign tourism in greenland..

Press release: Nuuk, 18 April 2024

greenland tourism packages

In recent years, foreign tourism in Greenland has become an increasingly important part of the country’s economy. In line with this, there is an increased need for solid data and documentation that can support both economic growth in the sector and sustainable development in the area.

In the summer of 2023, eight key players in tourism and society came together to produce an in-depth analysis of the economic impact of foreign tourism in Greenland. Among those involved were Air Greenland, Kalaallit Airports, Bank of Greenland, Bank of Greenland Business Fund, Nalik Ventures, AECO – Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators, Sikuki Nuuk Harbour and Visit Greenland.

Partners believe facts and knowledge are essential for making informed decisions about future priorities and investments, which applies to political decisions and those that happen at the company level. With the prospect of new international airports and a new sector plan for the tourism sector, they want to take joint responsibility for contributing insights that can set the framework for promoting sustainable tourism in and for Greenland.

“A nuanced understanding of foreign tourism’s contribution to the national economy is essential to predict the effects of new investments and decisions. At the same time, we must have a common understanding of the socio-economic benefits tourism currently contributes to Greenland so that together, we can set goals for the economic role we want tourism to play in the country’s future. With the publication of this analysis, it is our common wish to contribute to a fact-based debate on tourism while recognizing the tourism sector as a significant socio-economic contributor,” says Visit Greenland’s CEO, Anne Nivíka Grødem.

The main results from the analysis show the following:

In 2023, foreign tourism contributed with revenue to Greenland of almost DKK 1.9 billion.

Foreign tourism amounted to a gross added value of DKK 1.2 billion, direct taxes of DKK 48 million and duties of DKK 87 billion in 2023.

Foreign tourism directly accounted for 1,075 jobs.

Want to see the next total solar eclipse in 2026? An expert recommends booking travel now.

  • 2026 will be Europe's first total solar eclipse in 27 years.
  • Travelers worldwide will likely head to Spain, Iceland, and Greenland for the event.
  • A hotel expert encouraged travelers to start planning and booking their trips now.

It'll be two decades before the next total solar eclipse hits the US .

Another option: hop on a plane to Europe and turn the 2026 total solar eclipse into a viewing vacation.

Eclipse cartographer Michael Zeiler at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told Space.com that up to 3.7 million people likely traveled for the solar eclipse on Monday.

HotelPlanner's chief communication officer, Philip Ballard, told Business Insider that the eclipse was a major revenue generator for many cities. For places like Austin, Texas, and Rochester, New York, it could have created $1 billion in revenue, Vox reported.

"I would say the total solar eclipse has become a global phenomenon," Ballard said.

Ballard added that the next solar eclipse , which will pass through Iceland, Greenland, and Spain on August 12, 2026, could result in similar tourism and revenue influxes.

And if travelers are considering a trip to Europe for the solar eclipse, Ballard recommends planning your trip now.

Determine your eclipse viewing destination

According to Space.com , 2026 will be Europe's first total solar eclipse in 27 years. Its path will go through Greenland, parts of western Iceland, and northern Spain.

Choosing where to watch the eclipse will be a tough and important decision for travelers.

Iceland and Greenland have some positives. These regions will experience longer totality times, so viewers can watch the eclipse longer. Plus, the sun will be higher in the sky, so finding a spot to watch the eclipse will be less challenging, Space.com reported.

The downside is that these regions are more likely to be cloudy, according to the outlet.

While parts of Spain are likely to offer clearer skies, the eclipse's timing will be shorter and closer to the horizon, which means travelers will need to plan and track down a viewing location with unobstructed views of the western horizon, Space.com reported.

Regardless of the destination, according to the outlet, one bonus is that the strongest meteor shower in the Northern Hemisphere will happen the following night, so travelers can pack two events into one trip.

Book flights and hotels far in advance

Ballard encouraged people to book their hotels in their destination of choice as far in advance as possible.

"You should start looking now and booking hotels now because those cities in the path are already going to be at peak season," Ballard said.

Ballard said it's similar to when a Super Bowl city is determined or a Taylor Swift tour date is announced — you immediately see spikes in bookings. He predicts hotel occupancy rates will hit near-record highs, and room prices may double around the solar eclipse date.

Ballard's general rule of thumb is to book international travel at least three months in advance, but since this is such an anticipated event, booking earlier is smart. His advice is to start discussing plans with friends and family. If you decide on a destination, book a refundable room to keep your options open if plans change.

Regarding purchasing a plane ticket, a study from Expedia states that international travel's sweet spot is at least six months in advance.

According to Expedia, travelers who book six months in advance save an average of 10% more than travelers booking within two months or less.

Skip the hassle of planning altogether and book a solar eclipse tour

Another option is to let a tour operator do the work for you. A handful of tour companies have seen the increased interest in the solar eclipse and launched tours designed around the event.

These tours will have predetermined locations to view the eclipse, hotel blocks reserved, and itineraries highlighting both the region and the eclipse.

However, these can sell out quickly. For example, Space and Telescope created an 11-day tour of Spain around viewing the 2026 solar eclipse. The tour has already sold out as of Wednesday, and the waitlist is full.

Other operators, such as Wilderness Travel and Eclipse Traveler, have similar itineraries for the total eclipse in 2026.
