  • Opening hours: Monday – Sunday, 8am – 4pm
  • Admission: 614 pesos (~$36) (foreigners)/ 272 pesos (Mexican citizens)

There is nothing that beats the thrill of visiting Chichen Itza , a World Wonder, and one of Mexico’s most visited UNES CO heritage sites. Even if it is a little crowded and a longish day trip from Cancun .

The name Chichen Itza literally translates to “the edge of the well where the wise men of the Itza group live”.

Itza were people of the ancient Mayan civilization who became powerful in the Postclassic period, coinciding with the time of rise of Chichen Itza. And of course, the well refers to the sacred cenote at Chichen Itza that you can still see.

What to see at Chichen Itza?

The most important structure at Chichen Itza is the Temple of Kukulcan , a 4-sided pyramid with a shrine on the top. Legend has it that every year Mayan Serpent God, Kukulkan, descends on this pyramid.

Well, this does happen in reality – a mix of science, mythology, and religion. Learn more about it in my post on “ Intriguing facts about Chichen Itza “.

Other interesting structures include the Temple of Warriors, the Great Ball Court, a Wall of Skulls , and the rounded observatory.

Best time to visit Chichen Itza is early in the morning when there are fewer people around.

  • Distance from Cancun: 82 miles (1hr 45mins)
  • Opening hours: Monday – Sunday, 9am – 5pm
  • Admission: 90 + 58 = 148 pesos (~$9)

One of the most visited Mayan ruins near Cancun is the archaeological site of Tulum . Located on a cliff by the Caribbean Sea , Tulum ruins make for an unmissable Cancun attraction .

As evidenced by its location, Tulum was a port city during the Mayan times.

It was established as early as 500 CE but became a prosperous trading hub and reached its zenith in the Late Postclassic period. It was during this time that several important buildings were built in Tulum.

What to see at Tulum Ruins?

The most notable structure here is the main pyramid or the El Castillo which functioned both as a shrine and as a lighthouse.

Other highlights include the Temple of the Descending God, and the beautiful Temple of Frescoes (which still has intact pre-Hispanic Mayan murals).

The major highlight of Tulum ruins is of course the beach and the blue torquiose waters of the Caribbean Sea which make these Mayan ruins special.

Coba pyramid in Yucatan

  • Distance from Cancun: 83 miles (2hrs 10mins)
  • Opening hours: Monday – Sunday, 8am – 5pm
  • Admission: 90 pesos

Coba is yet another iconic Mayan ruin that cannot be missed when in Cancun. It was a powerful Mayan center in the olden times and dominated the Yucatan Peninsula between 600 -900 CE.

There was a time when more than 50,000 residents lived in this huge city. Coba’s might started weaning off when Chichen Itza rose to power in the Postclassic period.

Research suggests that people started settling in Coba as early as 100 BCE. The city developed around five lakes which was a major reason it continued to grow.

Did you know that Coba is actually the original Mayan name of this city? And that it literally translates to ruffled waters?

What to see at Coba?

One of the most interesting things that you will see in Coba is its collection of Sacbe or white stone and plaster roads.

Since the city was a powerful center and literally the hub of all activity, people from smaller towns came to Coba for work and trade. That required roads or sacbe.

There are more than 50 sacbeob (plural for sacbe) in Coba radiating in different directions. The longest one takes you as far as Yaxuna which is 80 miles to the west.

Apart from the sacbe, other highlights at Coba include the tall Nohoch Mul Pyramid, a church, the Pyramid of the Painted Lintel, and several sculpted stelae that give us rich insights into life, rituals, dresses, and ceremonies at Coba.

Best Tours for Coba Mayan Ruins from Cancun

The ruins of Coba and Tulum are just 30 miles apart. Hence, they are easily combined on a full-day archeology tour like this one from Cancun.

Best Mayan Ruins in Cancun Hotel Zone & City

El rey mayan ruins in cancun.

Mayan ruins of El Rey in Cancun

  • Distance from Cancun Hotel Zone: 0
  • Distance from Downtown Cancun: 13 miles (30 mins)
  • Opening hours: Monday – Sunday, 9:00am – 4:30pm
  • Admission: 70 pesos

If you wish to see some ancient Mayan ruins in Cancun and do not want to spend an entire day heading to Chichen Itza and back, then consider the El Rey Archaeological Site. It is located right here in the middle of the Cancun hotel zone.

El Rey literally translates to “The King”. The place was named so after the statue of a king (or a royal character) was discovered here.

El Rey started as a small Mayan settlement around 200 CE and went on to become prominent in the 1200s when it became the hub of maritime trade and fishing along with San Miguelito.

There are theories that suggest that during this time, many people also migrated from the interior of the Yucatan Peninsula . This is also when many of the structures that you see today were constructed.

It takes about an hour to explore the ruins of platforms, walls, and columns of El Rey.

What to see at El Rey Mayan Ruins in Cancun?

The most important building is Building #2 which has a pyramid base and a temple on top.

Buildings #1 and #4 are palaces that once had large audience halls supported by tall colonnades.

You can also visit Museo Maya de Cancun which is just a couple of miles away for a richer insight into the history of this area. By the way, if you love iguanas, you will find a lot of them here.

San Miguelito Archaeological Site

San Miguelito Pyramid

  • Distance from Downtown Cancun: 11 miles (25 mins)
  • Opening hours: Tuesday – Sunday, 9:00am – 5:30pm

San Miguelito is another Mayan site in the Cancun Hotel Zone.

The ruins of San Miguelito are like an extension of El Rey. They are located right within the complex of the Mayan Museum of Cancun . Same ticket for both the museum and the ruins.

Along with El Rey, El Meco, and Isla Mujeres, San Miguelito formed a powerful network of Mayan trading centers in the Post-Classical Period (1200 – 1500 CE).

Trade items mostly included dried fish, salt, and honey for export and obsidian and jade for import. Now that reminds me that the ancient city of Teotihuacan was once a major exporter of obsidian . Interesting connections, right?

What to see at the San Miguelito Ruins in Cancun?

The site is divided into 4 groups: North Set, Chaak Palace, Dragon Set, and South Set.

Chaak Palace is the most impressive with the remains of a large public building.

The South Set is home to the ruins of a small pyramid in Costa Oriental architecture , a style common to the eastern coast of Quintana Roo in the Postclassic period.

Best Tour of San Miguelito Ruins in Cancun

Yamil Lu’um Cancun Ruins

  • Distance from Downtown Cancun: 10 miles (20 mins)

Yet another Mayan ruin located right next to the Hotel Zone in Cancun is the small but pretty site of Yamil Lu’um.

It sits on the top of a small hill on the beach, right in front of the Park Royal Beach Hotel – a great place to stay if you wish to live right next to ancient ruins. However, I would say every hotel in Zona Hotelera is close to one ruin or the other.

What to see at Yamil Lu’um?

There isn’t a ton of stuff to do at Yamil Lu’um. It is basically just the weathered walls of Templo del Alacran or the Scorpion Temple.

The temple is called so because of the remains of a scorpion sculpture found on its walls. It is more popular for the stunning views of the sea it offers.

El Meco Mayan Pyramid in Cancun

El Meco ruins in Cancun

  • Distance from Downtown Cancun: 6 miles (15 mins)
  • Admission: 55 pesos

Located just 20 minutes north of downtown Cancun, the Mayan ruins of El Meco are an absolute hidden gem.

El Meco is home to the tallest Mayan pyramid in the Cancun area and the one of the largest in Yucatan. Yet, it remains hidden behind large trees, shy iguanas, and a general lack of awareness.

Chances are high that you will find this Yucatan pyramid in Cancun completely to yourself when you visit.

Iguana at Chichen Itza

What to see at El Meco Mayan Ruins?

The pyramid here is called El Castillo and is dedicated to Mayan Rain God, Chaac . You can climb up to some stunning views of the city of Cancun, the beach, and the peninsula.

When El Meco started off as a fishing village in the 600 – 900 CE (Late Classic Period), Coba had a strong influence on it. As Chichen Itza went on to become more powerful in the Postclassic era, the effect of Coba waned off. This is probably why we see a strong influence of Chichen Itza in the monuments of El Meco.

Between 1200 and 1500 CE, El Meco became a powerful port in the Yucatan peninsula because it controlled access to the nearby sanctuaries on Isla Mujeres.

Devotees had to pass through El Meco to get to the sacred Temple of Ixchel. This, no doubt, made this once-small fishing town highly influential.

Best Tour of El Meco Ruins in Cancun

  • Here’s a great tour of the El Meco ruins that allows you to see in the remarkable archeological site of El Meco near Cancun in just a few hours.

Bonus: Mayan Museum of Cancun

Mayan Pottery at the Cancun Museum

If you’re planning to visit the Mayan ruins in Cancun and nearby, I highly recommend checking out the displays at the Mayan Museum of Cancun.

Founded by the National Anthropology Institute of Mexico, this museum has a lot of amazing displays that give you an immersive experience of ancient Mayan history and culture.

✦ Pro Tip : For details on what to see and expect at the museum, check out our detailed Visitor’s Guide for Cancun’s Mayan Museum.

Other Mayan Ruins near Cancun, Mexico

Isla mujeres mayan ruins.

The Mayan ruins of Isla Mujeres

Now that we are talking about the Temple of Ixchel, let’s move on to our next destination i.e. the Mayan ruins of Isla Mujeres.

The most prominent structure on Isla Mujeres is the Temple of Goddess Ixchel located on the southern tip of the island.

Ixchel was the Mayan Goddess of fertility, medicine, weaving, and happiness. No doubt, devotees thronged to this sanctuary. It is also possible that this temple was also used as a lighthouse in the ancient times.

There’s an interesting story about how the island got its current name. Seems like only women (priestesses of the temple) inhabited this island in the past.

When the Spanish landed here in 1517, they discovered several statues of Goddess Ixchel and other female members of her family. That is how the Spanish started calling it the Island of Women or Isla Mujeres.

Uxmal Archeological Site

The massive pyramid of Uxmal Mayan Ruins

Yet another amazing Mayan ruin near Cancun is the Archeological Site of Uxmal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Considered one of the most important archaeological sites of Mayan culture, Uxmal is renowned for its majestic Pyramid of the Magician.

The architecture at Uxmal is characteristic of the Puuc style , featuring intricate stone mosaics and detailed facades, which distinguish it from other Mayan sites.

However, remember that Uxmal is among the farthest ruins from Cancun on this list. It can up to 4.5 hours to get to Uxmal from Cancun. Therefore, it is best to do Uxmal on a guided tour from Cancun or plan a DIY trip from Merida instead.

What to see at Uxmal?

The Pyramid of the Magician is a towering monument with a distinct elliptical base quite unusual among the other Mayan ruins in the region. Its size and history make it a must-visit attraction in Mexico.

Another highlight is the Governor’s Palace, a long low building with a stunningly detailed façade, which is a prime example of Puuc architecture.

Further, Uxmal is also an integral part of Ruta Puuc or the Puuc Route , a 60-km stretch that takes you through other Mayan sites depicting this unique architectural form.

If you love history and ancient ruins, then you’ll enjoy visiting other remarkable ancient sites such as Kabah, Xlapak, and Labna on the Puuc Route.

Muyil Mayan Ruins near Cancun

Muyil ruins in Yucatan Mexico

  • Distance from Cancun: 96 miles (2hr 10mins)
  • Opening hours: Monday – Sunday, 9:00am – 3:00pm

Muyil archaeological zone, also known as Muyil-Chunyaxché ruins, gets its current name from a lagoon located nearby.

Once upon a time, Muyil was a thriving Mayan city in the Yucatan Peninsula. It was also one of the earliest.

Settlers began arriving in Muyil as early as 300 BCE long before the grand cities of Chichen Itza, Tulum, and Uxmal came into existence.

In the early Classic period (200 – 600 CE), many Peten-style buildings were built here. To give you some context, this style was common in the ancient Mayan cities of Belize and Guatemala.

Quite possibly, Muyil had strong trade and cultural relations with the rest of Mesoamerica.

The best thing about Muyil ruins is that it is located right next to the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. It is also a few minutes away from the ruins of Tulum which means you can easily combine both of them together on a day trip from Cancun.

Best Tour of Muyil Ruins from Cancun

  • This private tour from Cancun combines three amazing Mayan ruins together – Muyil, Tulum, and Coba. If you love ancient Mayan history, then this tour is for you.

San Gervasio

Ruins of San Gervasio in Cozumel

  • Distance from Cancun: 71 miles (2hr 45mins)
  • Opening hours: Monday – Sunday, 9:00am – 3:30pm

As Chichen Itza rose to power between 1000 – 1500 CE, San Gervasio rose to prominence not just because of its coastal location but also for its reputation as a hub of worship.

It is believed that San Gervasio was a sanctuary of Goddess Ixchel, Mayan god of fertility and medicine. We spoke about her in the section on Isla Mujeres ruins.

Therefore, San Gervasio was an important pilgrimage center for ancient Mayans. Evidence suggests that every Mayan woman tried to visit San Gervasio at least once in her life.

What to see at San Gervasio?

The site is home to several interesting buildings (in ruins now) from the Postclassic period. The small house, the tall house – which could have been the shrine of Goddess Ixchel, the big house, and Los Murcielagos are especially notable.

San Gervasio is one of the largest Mayan ruins on the island of Cozumel and a great addition to your day trip. Check out latest opening hours and prices on the Cozumel Parks website here .

Best Tours of San Gervasio Ruins

Here are a couple of good guided tours that show you the best of Cozumel including the ruins of San Gervasio.

  • A private shore excursion of Cozumel that includes a tour of San Gervasio ruins.
  • Visit San Gervasio ruins, have some beach time, and enjoy a tequila factory trip on this small group tour .

The Mayan monuments at Tulum

Xcaret Archaeological Park

  • Distance from Cancun: 48 miles (1hr 10mins)
  • Opening hours for Xcaret Park: Monday – Sunday, 8:30am – 9pm
  • Admission fee for Xcaret Park: 100+ USD

Originally known as the Polé (refers to merchandise or merchants), Xcaret archaeological park is an ancient Mayan village that lies with the huge Xcaret theme park today.

The name Polé points the village’s importance in Mayan trade and economy. Additionally, it also served as a stopover/departure point for pilgrims traveling to the sanctuary of Goddess Ixchel in San Gervasio, Cozumel.

Because of its location within a theme park, many tourists believe it to be unreal. But that’s not true. These Mayan structures are authentic and date back to more than a 1000 years ago.

The only way to access the ruins is by purchasing a ticket to Xcaret Park which can be super expensive.

However, if you already have plans for Xcaret and wish to see a small Mayan ruins along with it, then don’t forget to step into this Mayan wonderland within the park.

Stunning stucco work at Ek Balam

  • Distance from Cancun: 107 miles (2hrs 20mins)
  • Opening hours: Monday – Sunday, 8:00am – 5:00pm
  • Admission: 531 pesos (~$31) (foreigners) /211 pesos (Mexican nationals)

Of all the Mayan ruins in Yucatan, the ones at Ek Balam were one of my favorites because they are unique.

It is quite common for heritage seekers to club Ek Balam with Chichen Itza on a day trip from Cancun .

What to see at Ek Balam?

In Ek Balam, you will find distinctive stucco structures that you will generally not see anywhere else in Yucatan. Of special interest is a huge monster mouth that has often been denoted as the road to death.

There are also a couple of winged warrior structures which are highly unusual in the Mayan culture. If you are visiting the ruins of Ek Balam , do not forget to check out these special sculptures.

Ek Balam has an extensive complex that was designed according to astronomical principles like many other Mayan cities including Chichen Itza.

Highlights include the main pyramid, the Oval Palace, twin pyramids, and the arched gateway which once connected Ek Balam to a Mayan sacbe.

I find the admission fee a little too steep here – something you might want to consider when planning your Cancun day trip.

Best Tours for Ek Balam Ruins from Cancun

Have a look at this full-day tour that includes Ek Balam, Chichen Itza, and a cenote . If you choose their Cancun hotel pick-up option, tickets to both Ek Balam and Chichen Itza are included in it.

Practical information for visiting Mexican ruins in Cancun

  • Always be sure to refer to the website of INAH Mexico for updated opening hours and admission charges for all archaeological sites in Mexico. INAH, or the National Institute of Anthropology and History, is the government body that protects and preserves these ruins.
  • Several Cancun pyramids were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They are slowly starting to open up. Please check on INAH, Google Reviews, and Tripadvisor before planning.
  • Be sure to get a pair of sturdy walking/climbing shoes, sunglasses, water, and a hat. It can get supremely hot in the Yucatan!
  • There are a few Mayan pyramids near Cancun such as the one at Ek Balam which you can still climb. But I wouldn’t recommend that because of the fragility of the structures. I did climb Ek Balam a few years but I do feel guilty when I recall that those stairs and walls have been badly damaged by years of climbing.
  • If you are planning to see a couple of Mayan ruins, read our guide on how to visit Chichen Itza and Ek Balam on the same day .

Chichen Itza Castillo Mayan Ruins tours from Cancun

The Mayan Ruins at a glance

Did you know that sixteen different Mayan provinces populated the Yucatán Peninsula in the early 16th century? Knowing that it’s easy to see how this area came to be known as the gateway to the Mayan world.

Many fascinating archaeological sites are spread across the Yucatán including Chichen Itza, the Tulum Ruins, Uxmal, the lesser-known Ruta Puuc, Mayapan (my favorite), and many more.

Several of these Mayan ruins have been declared world heritage sites, which is all the more reason to visit!

Cancun itself is home to two Mayan archeological sites (El Rey and San Miguelito) and was an important center of trade during the Mayan era. Although these sites are worth checking out, this post is about more impressive ancient sites that are a bit further away.

It’s easier to visit the ruins on this list with a tour company. If you have been reading my blog for a while you will know that I prefer to travel by car and be more independent.

However, I reckon that looking at this majestic Mayan City with a guide is much more interesting because you also get to learn about the building you are looking at.

Also, tours will help you save time if you are in a rush and want to see as much as you can.

However, if you have time and want to drive your car around the Yucatan Peninsula, you can do that too and hire a guide at the site entrance. They are available at almost every major archeological site.

Now let’s get to the good stuff. Here are the best Mayan ruins excursions for a great day trip from Cancun .

Another super cool archaeological site you won’t want to miss while you’re in the Yucatan is Coba.

These ruins are located between Valladolid and Tulum and are super unique.

What to wear on an excursion to the Cancun Mayan Ruins

Like for every tour, wearing the right clothes and taking the right equipment will make your trip better and much more enjoyable.

So here are my pro tips on what to wear during a Mayan Ruin excursion.

✔️ Dress lightly and comfortably – linen or hiking pants would be ideal, and a top tank or a linen shirt will help with the heat.

✔️ Hiking or tennis shoes will be ideal – although you are not actually hiking, closed shoes will prevent you from being bitten by bugs, like ants or mosquitos as you walk around the archeological sites. For me, these are a lifesaver. You can bring some flip-flops in the backpack for when you will move to the cenote.

✔️ Swimsuit – for the cenote – check out these beautiful and cheap ones from CupShe (my absolute favorite)

✔️ Sunscreen and a hat (but make sure you wash it away before entering the cenote)

CeraVe 100% Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 | Face Sunscreen with Zinc Oxide & Titanium Dioxide for Sensitive Skin | With Hyaluronic Acid, Niacinamide, and Ceramides | 2.5 oz

✔️ Mosquito Repellent – mosquitos are omnipresent in the jungle, so make sure you protect yourself

Sallye Ander No-Bite-Me All Natural Bug Repellent & Insect Repellent - Anti Itch Cream - Safe for Kids and Infants - Repels Mosquitoes,  Fleas, and Ticks - 8 oz - Organic Bug Repellent for Skin

Keep mosquitos away!

OFF! Botanicals Deet-Free Insect Repellent, Plant-Based Bug Spray & Mosquito Repellent, 4 oz

6885 4.5-⭐️ Reviews

✔️ Water bottle – always stay hydrated in Mexico, especially when you go on a tour and stay in the heat for a while. Remember tap water is not drinkable in Cancun , so you can get a cute water bottle and refill it in restaurants or your hotel.

Click on one of the below water bottles to purchase your favorite one ⤵️

IRON °FLASK Sports Water Bottle - 24 Oz - 3 Lids (Narrow Spout Lid) Leak Proof Vacuum Insulated Stainless Steel - Hot & Cold Double Walled Insulated Thermos, Durable Metal Canteen

✔️ Beach Towel – usually hotels provide a beach towel that you can carry on excursions but they are fluffy and big and occupy a lot of space. So you can buy either a cute linen Turkish towel or a more practical quick dry towel.

✔️ Foldable backpack – you can get a nice and cheap foldable backpack on Amazon and use it on these tours to carry your stuff.

Mayan Ruins Tours from Cancun: Final Thoughts

As you can see, there are many incredible Mayan ruins to visit while you’re on vacation in the Mexican Caribbean. I wouldn’t miss out on the big-ticket ruins of Chichen Itza, the gorgeous seaside site of Tulum, and the mystical jungle ruins of Coba and Ek Balam.

No matter which tour you choose, you are bound to have the experience of a lifetime! In between visiting ruins, you can swim in cenotes, explore the colonial streets of Valladolid, eat delicious Yucatec food, and snorkel over coral reefs! It’s going to be awesome!

Maya History

As many as 4,400 ancient Mayan cities have been discovered throughout Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, and El Salvador.

Aguada Fenix is the oldest Maya city discovered to date, built in 1,000 BC.  It was built with platforms rather than pyramids, and is located in the state of Tabasco.

The Maya Empire reached the peak of its influence and power around the sixth century AD.  The Mayans were an agrarian society, but also mastered astronomy, calendar-making, and mathematics.  They left behind impressive architecture and artwork, as well as a hieroglyph system of writing.

Decline of the Mayan Empire

Most of the great cities of the Maya were abandoned by 900 AD, for unknown reasons.  Theories abound: disease, warfare, drought, overpopulation and overuse of the land.  It’s likely that a combination of these factors led to the decline.

But the Maya people survived, and their descendants live throughout the Yucatan Peninsula, Guatemala, and the region.  It’s estimated that as many as 6 million people speak 70 Mayan language dialects today.

Yamil Lu’um | Small Seaside Cancun Mayan Ruins

Travelers might be surprised to find the Yamil Lu’um ancient ruins sandwiched between two modern resorts, the Park Royal Cancun Resort and Westin Lagunamar Ocean Resort.  Located on Cancun’s highest point on Playa Marlin, Yamil Lu’um means “hilly land.”

There are two small structures here, one a temple pyramid and the other likely a lighthouse.  The temple is known as Templo del Alacran, the Scorpion’s Temple, because of the remains of a scorpion sculpture found on the site.  Discovered in 1842, the ruins were likely constructed between 1200 and 1550 AD.

Since the ruins are located on hotel grounds, the only way to reach them is from the beach, unless you’re a guest.  But if you love ruins, or are staying nearby, be sure to make a stop here to take in the views of the ruins with the beach backdrop.

El Rey is a small archaeological site located a few blocks from Playa Delfines, on the lagoon side.  It has to main plazas, a pyramid/temple complex, and other ceremonial structures along the two sacbeob (white roads made of stone) that run the length of the site. Over 500 burials have been identified buried beneath the residential platforms at El Rey.

The original name of the site is not known. In 1909 two English travelers visited the site and found a sculpture of what was interpreted as a monarch or a noble person.  The name El Rey (“the king”) comes from this sculpture, the head of which is preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Cancun.

There is little shade at El Rey, so it’s a good site to visit in the morning. Be sure to bring sunscreen, a hat, water, and comfortable walking shoes.

El Meco Mayan Ruins in Cancun

El Meco Ruins | Cancun Pyramids North of the City

El Meco is a small archaeological zone located along the coast on the northern side of Cancun on the road to Punta Sam.  The site has many shade trees and flowering plants which make it one of the prettiest Mexican ruins sites close to Cancun. It’s also a hidden gem: you’re not likely to encounter many other travelers here.

El Meco began as a small fishing village in 200-600 AD.  It was first linked to Coba, and later to Chichen Itza.  As the town grew, it became an important trading post and port for devotees embarking on pilgrimages to the sacred shrines on Isla Mujeres .

El Meco has the tallest pyramid on the northeast Yucatan Peninsula, an impressive structure called El Castillo.  Some sections of the ruins are closed to visitors or on private property, although iguanas have the run of the place!

These ancient ruins are divided into four sections: North Set, Chaak Palace, Dragon Set, and South Set. Chaak Palace is the largest and most impressive building, with the remains of a shrine.  The other structures, the remains of housing platforms, contain excavations of 50 human burials and artifacts such as basalt, flint, obsidian, quartz, ceramics, copper axes, and other tools.

San Gervasio Mayan Ruins in Cozumel

San Gervasio Ruins | Mayan Ruins in Cozumel

Located on the northern side of the island of Cozumel, San Gervasio is dedicated to the Maya moon deity Ixchel; goddess of childbirth, weaving and medicine.  It’s possible that San Gervasio was one of the main sites of pilgrimage in Mesoamerica, particularly for Mayan women.

San Gervasio is spread out over two square miles, and only a small number of buildings are open to the public.  You can visit Las Manitas, a structure named because of red handprints covering the interior walls.  The Temple of the Murals, which once received offerings from pilgrims to the site, is named for brightly colored, geometric patterns still visible on the walls.

Xcaret Archaeological Zone - Pole Ruins

Xcaret Archaeological Zone | Polé Ruins

The Mayan ruins of Xcaret lie within the modern Xcaret Park, an amusement and ecological theme park near Playa del Carmen.

The original name of the site was Pole, meaning goods or merchandise, signifying that the location was important for commercial trade.  It was also a port where travelers could embark and return via canoe from religious pilgrimages to Cozumel.  The ruins date to around 1000 AD.

Xcaret ruins can only be accessed from within the modern theme park.  Visitors can learn about the Mayan culture by touring the ruins of Xcaret, which means “little inlet” in Mayan, and experience a wide variety of shows and tours. Alongside the ruins, a Mayan village has been recreated for visitors to see how the Maya lived and constructed their homes.

Tulum Mayan Ruins - things to do in Tulum

Tulum Mayan Ruins | Stunning Seaside Setting

The Maya ruins at Tulum are iconic: perched at the edge of a high cliff, with sweeping views of the turquoise Caribbean waters and white sands below.  Tulum was one of the last cities built and lived in by the Maya, dating to 1200 – 1450 AD, although the area was inhabited earlier.  It served as a center of trade, where both sea and land trade routes converged on the Riviera Maya.

Tulum was a walled city on three sides, with the fourth protected by the sea cliff; in fact, Tulum means “wall.”  The original name of the city might have been “Zamas” meaning dawn, since it faces east and sunrises here are certainly stunning! Surviving ceremonial buildings at Tulum include the main temple overlooking the sea, called El Castillo, and several others including one with frescoes inside.

Tulum is a must-see Mayan site, because of its dramatic location and sweeping views.  You can also swim on the private beach, accessible by a long staircase from the cliff, and relax with the enormous resident iguanas.

Affordable Tulum

The Tulum Mayan ruins are easy to visit on a day trip from Cancun.  Be sure to bring a bathing suit, towel, sunscreen and hat (there’s little shade, and the white sacbeob paths reflect a ton of light!).  Bring cash to pay.

Best-Mexico-Ruins-Mayan-Ruins-of-Muyil

Muyil Ruins (Chunyaxche) in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere

The Muyil ruins are located about 15 miles south of Tulum in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere.  Set deep in the lush jungle, Muyil is less impressive Mayan site than Tulum, but also less crowded and touristy.  Ruin-lovers in the area could check it out on a day trip to the biosphere.  The architectural style here is known as “Peten” style, meaning similar construction and design as the ruins at Tikal in Guatemala.

Muyil was one of the earliest Maya cities on the coast, settled as early as 300 BCE.  It is situated on the Sian Ka’an lagoon, a name meaning “where the sky is born.”  (If you visit and see the beauty of the biosphere, you’ll understand how it got this name!)  There is a boardwalk through the jungle that takes you to a lookout over the lagoon.

Get there: You can take a colectivo (shared van) from Tulum, arrange a taxi for the day, or take a tour that combines the ruins with other activities. Be sure to bring sunscreen, bottled water, suitable shoes ( I love these! ), bug spray and a hat, as well as a bathing suit and towel if you plan to swim.  Bring cash to pay.

Ruins in Yucatan State | Yucatan Pyramids From Cancun

Best Mexico Ruins - Mayan Ruins of Chichen Itza - Pyramid of Kukulkan

Chichen Itza | Famous Pyramid of Kukulcan + Mayan Ruins

Chichen Itza is the celebrity entry on this list: it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was voted one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.  It’s also one of the most-visited tourist sites in Mexico, and gets extremely busy during school holidays and the equinoxes!

Chichen Itza was at its peak from 750 to 1200 AD as a center of trade and culture for the Mayan Empire.  It fell into rapid decline around 1200, and was abandoned around 1500 at the time of Spanish colonization. Chichen Itza’s blend of architecture, with stylistic influences from central Mexico and other Maya regions, make it an important Mesoamerican ruin site and a must-see for archaeology enthusiasts.

The surviving monuments at Chichen Itza include the main temple, the famous Pyramid of Kukulkan (also known as El Castillo); the Great Ball Court, the largest of its kind in Mesoamerica; El Caracol, an astronomical observatory; and the Temple of Warriors, an enormous Mayan temple with hundreds of stone columns.  You can also see the Sacred Cenote, where the Maya made offerings of jade, gold, and even sacrifices.

Best Mexico Ruins - Mayan Ruins of Chichen Itza - Platform of the Skulls

At the spring and autumn equinoxes, the Maya believed that the serpent god Kukulcan descended to Earth.  The Kukulcan Pyramid at Chichen Itza dedicated to him creates the illusion of this at the equinox.

Be sure to bring sunscreen, water, suitable shoes, and a hat, as well as a bathing suit and towel if you plan to visit the cenote.

Coba Mayan Ruins from Cancun

Coba | Mayan Pyramids in Yucatan

Coba is one of the first Mexican ruins I visited, and it’s still a favorite.  Exploring its jungle setting and sprawling complex gives you serious Indiana Jones vibes.  Coba sat at the nexus of the largest network of sacbeob in the Maya world, which connected structures within Coba like Nohoch Mul pyramid as well as neighboring ceremonial centers and cities.  The name Coba in Mayan means “waters stirred by the wind,” perhaps due to its place on two large lagoons.

Coba was estimated to have more than 50,000 residents at its peak.  This huge city for its time flourished between 600-900 CE, and was abandoned around the time of the Spanish colonization.  Like all Maya sites, the reason is unknown; although leading theories are drought, disease, overpopulation and destruction of the environment due to overfarming. It’s likely that a combination of factors led to the Maya downfall.

Coba is notable for several reasons.  First, it has a large number of surviving stelae with images and Maya hieroglyphic writing, which give insight into important aspects of Mayan rituals, politics, and history.  Women are depicted in positions of power in some of the stelae scenes.  Also, the largest temple of Coba, Nohoch Mul, can be climbed: it’s 137 feet high (42m), with expansive views over the jungle.

Coba Lagoon - Yucatan Mayan Ruins

The site is large, so it’s easiest to get around by bike which can be rented onsite.  Be sure to bring sunscreen, lots of water, suitable shoes, bug spray and a hat, as well as a bathing suit and towel if you plan to visit cenotes. Bring cash to pay.

Best Mexico Ruins - Maya Ruins of Ek Balam

Ek Balam | Yucatan Mayan Ruins

The lesser-known Maya site of Ek Balam is about 15 miles north of the colonial town of Valladolid, and means “black jaguar” in Mayan.  It’s notable for its well-preserved sculptures and stonework, panoramic views, and a four-sided entry arch.

First settled in 100 BCE, most of the buildings at Ek Balam were constructed around 600-900 CE.  Impressive ruins and must-see sights here include the Acropolis, restored stucco facades, and views of the jungle.  There is also a cenote, X’canche, where you can cool off after your visit.

Get there: Ek Balam can be seen on day trip from other cities in the region like Valladolid, Cancun, Merida, or Tulum.  You can take a taxi or colectivo from the colorful colonial city of Valladolid, or book a tour with transportation.  Be sure to bring sunscreen, water, suitable shoes, bug spray, and a hat, as well as a bathing suit and towel if you plan to visit the cenote.  Bring cash to pay or they do accept credit cards.

READ NEXT: My full guide to visiting Ek Balam and Cenote X’Canche on a day trip or guided tour!

On a clear day, you can see the temples of Chichen Itza and Coba on the horizon from the top of Ek Balam’s Acropolis, which is 90 feet (30m) high.

I was just here again in November, and can confirm that you can still climb the Acropolis! So if you want to be able to climb Mayan ruins, I definitely recommend Ek Balam.

As such an important Mayan site, it warrants paying a guide to really learn why it’s so important and all the things to see at Chichen Itza — otherwise, you’re essentially just looking at rocks 🪨

If you’re not going with a group tour , you can hire a guide on-site.

When arriving at the Chichen Itza entrance gate, you’ll see accredited guides selling day tours for about $1,000 pesos ($50 USD). If you’re planning to hire one, remember to bring enough pesos to pay them.

chichen itza stone mayan - day trips from Merida ruins - day trips from Merida

At Chichen Itza, there are several Mayan pyramids and unique sites to explore. It is a very large site, so plan for at least three hours to see it all.

Also, this really is a place you’ll want to visit with a knowledgeable guide, so consider booking a Cancun to Chichen Itza Tour .

Entering the site, you’ll first see El Castillo (Temple of Kukulcan); the Chichen Itza pyramid you’ve likely seen in photos.

Other notable sites include the Temple of the Warriors , Group of a Thousand Columns , Great Ball Court and Sacred Cenote — where human sacrifices likely took place.

As you’d imagine, the Mayan Ruins at Chichen Itza get very crowded, so arrive as easily as you can.

There’s very little shade at the site, so don’t forget your Water-To-Go Bottle (which also filters your water so you don’t get sick in Mexico), Anti-Bug Eco Sunscreen and a sun hat .

Many visitors say it even feels more authentic, as it’s much less touristy and less crowded.

More of a complete Mayan city than a pyramid site, many will rent a bike to see the whole place, or hire a tricycle-taxi to get around.

cancun mayan pyramids tour

The largest pyramid at Coba Mayan Ruins, Nohoch Mul (AKA Ixmoja) , is actually the tallest pyramid in Yucatan at 137-feet-tall (42 m) and 120 steps to the top.

There’s a rope to hold on to, but this is a bit of a steep climb. However, the views of the entire jungle from the top are worth it.

The Ixmoja pyramid is part of the Nohoch Mul Group , but there are other notable areas at Coba. These include the Chumuc Mul Group , Coba Group and Macanxoc Group .

It is a very large site, so hire a local guide to discover everything that makes the Mayan Coba Ruins so unique.

🤔 Chichen Itza vs Coba Ruins

Of course, the two ruins are both impressive. However, Chichen Itza is quite touristy and crowded, while the Mayan Ruins Coba site is the exact opposite.

Many people also enjoy being able to rent bikes at Coba, for a leisurely ride through the jungle to see all the ruins of Coba.

Also, if you want to climb some Mayan pyramids in Yucatan, you’ll have to head to Coba — because you can’t climb any pyramids or structures at Chichen Itza.

Coba is located in Quintana Roo state, and not too far from all the best Tulum cenotes to swim in after your Coba visit.

It is a visually interesting site, with thatched roofs covering many of the pyramids; a gorgeous contrast with the stone pyramids.

Towards the interior of the buildings, don’t miss the elaborate carved stone statues tucked away beneath the thatched overhangs.

Overlooking the Caribbean Sea at Punta Sur, the southern tip of Isla Mujeres , you’ll find the Ruins of Ixchel Temple.

It sits on the highest elevation point in the entire Yucatan Peninsula , and at the edge of the sea, so historians say this structure functioned as a lighthouse, not a ceremonial center.

Nowadays, it’s one of the best things to do in Isla Mujeres. Besides the ruins themselves, there’s a rock and sculpture garden.

You’ll also see plenty of iguanas who live in the rocks of these ancient Mayan ruins of Mexico. Given it’s beachfront location, this is one of the most beautiful ruins in Yucatan, Mexico .

The actual name of these Mayan ruins is Chunyaxché, though you’ll mostly see it referred to as Muyil (pronounced moo-yeel). It is located just south of Tulum in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, near the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve , a recognized UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

The Muyil Ruins, though not too far from Tulum Ruins, look totally different. At Muyil, you’ll see what is known as Peten architecture, with steep walled pyramids similar to those at the famous Tikal Mayan Ruins in Guatemala.

As Muyil is a smaller Mayan Ruins site, many will combine their visit with a boat tour or float tour (where you float down the river with a guide) of Sian Ka’an.

Admittedly, Uxmal (pronounced oosh-mall) is the farthest of all Mexican Ruins near Cancun on this list. However, it is a Mexico UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s considered the second most important archeological site in the Yucatan, after Chichen Itza.

Though lacking the name recognition of Chichen Itza, the Mayan Ruins Uxmal site is equally impressive — and some say even more so. As it’s less crowded and less touristy, seeing only about one-tenth the yearly visitors as Chichen Itza, many argue Uxmal feels more authentic.

Besides the smaller crowds at Uxmal, you’ll also enjoy all the other perks of an off the beaten path Mexico ruins, like not being approached by hordes of souvenir vendors. Uxmal also provides for a more peaceful visit overall, where you can relax while admiring the site.

Where is Uxmal Mayan Ruins?

Chichen Itza vs Uxmal: Which is better?

While this is a matter of personal preference, as they are both quite impressive, there is one definitive reason you’d want to pick Uxmal.

You can climb the pyramids and buildings at Uxmal, which Chichen Itza does not allow for climbing on any structures.

While visitors can not climb the tallest pyramid in Uxmal, called El Adivino (AKA The Pyramid of the Magician), you can climb the Great Pyramid right next to it.

From the top, you’ll get the most amazing views of Uxmal and the surrounding Yucatan jungle.

You can also climb the other buildings — House of the Birds , House of the Turtles , Nunnery Quadrangle , and more — to see Uxmal’s intricate carved stone designs.

Though Uxmal has the most name recognition, there are actually four other Puuc Ruins sites. The complete list of Puuc Route sites are Sayil , Labna , Kabah , Xlapak and Uxmal — and they all fall under the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation, not just Uxmal.

What is the Puuc Route (Ruta Puuc)?

The Ruta Puuc is a 36-mile-long (58 km) drive that goes along Highway 261/Hopelchen-Uman Highway. Coming from Merida , Uxmal is the first site at 52 miles (84 km) away. If you follow the road heading southeast, you’ll pass Kabah, Sayil, Xlapak and Labna, in that order.

The word puuc means hills in Maya, and though the Yucatan is mostly flat, these five sites are on elevated land areas. Puuc has also come to signify the intricate architectural styles on the carved stone you’ll see on structures at these sites, and the carved masks of the Mayan rain god, Chaac.

The only way to see all the Puuc Route sites is by renting a car in Cancun , as there’s no public transport from Cancun. From Merida, there’s the Ruta Puuc Bus , which has one trip on Sundays with the Oriente bus company.

Puuc Route: Kabah Ruins

tall, large mayan pyramid - day trips from Merida

This ancient city is about 1,300-years-old and has a series of Mexican Mayan temples and structures to climb and explore. Along the walls of the central and most impressive structure, the Palace of Masks , you’ll see a display of more than 300 masks of Chaac, the Mayan Mexico rain god.

  • Kabah means the powerful hand in Maya
  • Can you climb the pyramids at Kabah? Yes
  • Kabah Hours: Open daily, 8am-5pm
  • Kabah Admission: $55 pesos ($2.50USD)

Puuc Route: Sayil Ruins

Archeologists estimate this town had about 10,000 inhabitants during its heyday in 900 AD.

The main structure at Sayil is a long, three-tier palace, and you can walk along the scabe (pathway) to El Mirador (The Lookout), a structure in near-ruin but with a very cool esthetic.

  • Can you climb the pyramids at Sayil? No
  • Sayil Hours: Open daily, 8am-5pm
  • Sayil Admission: $55 pesos ($2.50USD)

Puuc Route: Xlapak Ruins

mayan ruin site made of carved bricks - day trips from Merida

Though the smallest of the Puuc Route sites, it’s FREE to enter, so don’t pass up the chance to explore it. At Xlapak, you’ll find three palaces within separate complexes. Of the three, the main nine-room palace stands with several decorative masks depicting the Mayan god of rain, Chaac .

  • Xlapak means old walls in Maya
  • Can you climb the pyramids at Xlapak? No, there aren’t any large structures
  • Xlapak Hours: Open daily, 8am-5pm

Mayan pyramid

Hi! I was with friends on holiday in Cancun and bought trip to Chichen Itza. It was Mayan pyramid. Very interesting historical place. Guide told about Mayan history. It was amazing experience;)In Chichen Itza were many traders and Souvenir stands but better to buy from a dealer at a bargain price...bargain! In hotel shops souvenirs price was high but the best price was in Chichen Itza area...It was very, very hot do not forget umbrella, caps and cream because sun was very strong!

cancun mayan pyramids tour

Excellent quick response and confirmation. Picked up right on time! Best prices for Xplor at $114 pp. We went on August 29, 2012. Best trip in Cancun!

We booked this excursion through our hotel and it was amazing. Our tour guide was a decedent from the Mayans and was fabulous. He told about their culture, history, and "stories"! It was a long bus ride but they played a movie, offered refreshments/snacks, and gave a tour if you didn't want to watch the movie, there was also a restroom on the bus. It also included lunch and an extra stop at a natural well/spring that one could swim in and jump off the cliffs. We would go again if ever back in the area!

cancun mayan pyramids tour

We booked our trip to Chitzen-Itza last week. We were very dissatisfied with our "cultural" experience. It was clearly a marketing ploy or at best a "canned" tour. The trip was 13 hours in length. The excursion started off with catching a shuttle bus to the main terminal, then headed out, only to stop for a bathroom break and a chance for the driver to peddle his goods. The stop was supposed to be 5 minutes in length, but it was at least twenty minutes. After approximately an hour on the bus we stopped again at a Mayan souvenior shop, that had over priced goods. It was similar to An open mall. We then continued another two hours to the Chitzen-Itza site. We then waited for our tour guide....another 30 minutes. The two hour tour was informative, then we were left to explore on our own. We then headed back to the bus and again waited for other tourists. We drove ten minutes to be promised an authentic Mayan meal, which was far from that. It was a large buffet style meal, which 5 or 6 buses were crowded into. The next venture was to see an underground river. We opted to not partake in the event....as it was an additional 60 pesos per person. The trip back to our hotel was about three hours. When we booked the initial trip we were told it was about 90 minutes from our hotel. Over all a huge disappointment. The ruins were stunning, but not the way to showcase such a wonder. Leave out the commercials and all would be happy. My suggestion would be to contract a private driver or visit a ruin that is closer to cancun.

We booked a tour to Chichen its. The tour as alright in general, however the driver was over 40 minutes late. Then when we got to the shop 5 blocks away (they did pay the taxi), we waited another30 minutes. Then when on the road we stopped at two hotels for more people. We met great people and enjoyed the tour and the cenote! We did not care for the drivers booming music, the lack of high a/c, thetiming of the end time. We almost missed the last ferry to Cozumel by te fast ferry. The guide as okay (Tito Ramirez)we have better and ones that spoke better English. He was not always good at answering questions! The tour was supposed to include bottled water and at the end when they asked for tips we added the money we spent on water ($14 us) and declined to tip! The luch was Medicare, no other patrons in restaurant, probably due to quality of food. Or the fact it was 2:30pm considering we were ready at 7:30am!! No bueno!! The cenote was cool, but by the way, it is no where near the ruins.

This company is a rip off. They will tell u u will get a refund but will never give it to you. Don't use them...

cancun mayan pyramids tour

Chichen Itza is probably the most important city of the Mayan Culture in the Yucatan peninsula and has the most amazing buildings of any other Mayan ancient cities. Chichen Itza is also the largest and most impressive of the Mayan ruins,  is an spectacular and mystical place to visit,  if you only want to do one day trip during your vacation in Cancun, this should be this one. Chichen-Itza (chee-chehn eet-sah) in Maya, was a sacred city of the Itza and the name literally means: "Mouth of the well of the Itza". Located 75 miles east of Merida, the capital of the State of Yucatan, Mexico; it covers an area of approximately six square miles where hundreds of buildings once stood. Now most are mounds but more than thirty may still be seen by tourists. The ruins of Chichen Itza are divided into two groups. One group belongs to the classic Maya Period and was built between the 7th and 10th centuries A.D., at which time the city became a prominent ceremonial center. The other group corresponds to the Maya-Toltec Period, from the later part of the 10th century to the beginning of the 13th century A.D. This area includes the Sacred Well and most of the outstanding ruins.

Kukulkan's pyramid

Possibly the best known construction on the site is Kukulkan's Pyramid. El Castillo (Kukulkan-Quetzalcoatl), a square-based, stepped pyramid that is approximately 75 feet tall. This pyramid was built for astronomical purposes and during the vernal equinox (March 20) and the autumnal equinox (September 21) at about 3pm the sunlight bathes the western balustrade of the pyramid's main stairway. This causes seven isosceles triangles to form imitating the body of a serpent 37 yards long that creeps downwards until it joins the huge serpent's head carved in stone at the bottom of the stairway.

One of the highlights of the Coba ruins is the 130-foot-tall Nohoch Mul . Climbing to the top will reward you with a stunning panorama of the Yucatan Peninsula’s lush jungle, the ruins, and the sacbe, which is a Mayan road network made from bright white rock that was said to glow in the moonlight for night traders.

While not as well-known as Chichen Itza, Ek Balam has its own unique charm as it is less crowded, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the site’s beauty. One of the highlights of Ek Balam is the Acropolis Temple, which offers a stunning view from its six levels. However, visitors should note that there are few amenities available on-site, so it’s important to bring plenty of water.

  • How far is it from Cancun: 9 miles (15 mins)

Looking for a hidden gem in Mexico ? Look no further than El Meco! This Mayan site is just 20 minutes away from downtown Cancun , yet remains unknown to many due to its thick vegetation and lack of recognition. But trust us, it’s worth a visit.

El Meco dates back to the Late Classic Period (600 – 900 AD), and was heavily influenced by the nearby city of Coba during this time. However, its influence waned with the rise of Chichen Itza during the Postclassic era. You can see this in certain architectural elements of the monuments at El Meco, which were heavily influenced by those seen at Chichen Itza.

One of the highlights of El Meco is the El Castillo pyramid, which stands as a testament to the Mayan Rain God Chaac. Climb to the top of this towering structure and take in the breathtaking views of Cancun, its beaches, and the peninsula. It’s a truly awe-inspiring experience!

Snorkeling in Xel-Ha

7. Xel Ha (Mayan meaning: Spring water)

Did you know that there’s a hidden Mayan ruin site just a short distance from Xel Ha , a famous eco-park known for its beautiful lagoon and aquatic activities? This underrated gem may not be on everyone’s radar, but it’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Although relatively small, the site has three distinct structures that you can explore in just one hour. But what makes this archaeological spot truly unique are the stunning frescoes that can be found around the Pyramid of the Birds and House of Jaguar. These captivating ruins are a must-see for anyone visiting Xel Ha.

Isla Mujeres

8. Isla Mujeres Mayan Ruins

The story of how Isla Mujeres got its name is also quite intriguing. In 1517, the Spanish stumbled upon the island and discovered a temple solely inhabited by women, containing numerous statues of Goddess Ixchel and her female relatives. This discovery led the Spanish to name the place “Island of Women” or Isla Mujeres.

The highlight of this island is the Temple of Goddess Ixchel , which is located in the southern corner and served as a symbol of religious worship for many in the past. The temple was dedicated to the goddess responsible for fertility, medicine, and joy, making it a popular destination for her devotees.

There are many options available to you, depending on your preferred mode of transportation and which sites you want to visit. For example, the El Rey ruins are just a quick 20-minute bus ride from downtown Cancun , while Chichen Itza is a bit further away, about 2 1/2 hours by car .

If you’re planning a trip to the Yucatan, having your own vehicle is a great way to explore the region at your own pace. With your own car, you’ll have access to a variety of sights and destinations that may not be reachable by public transportation.

But don’t worry if you don’t have your own wheels! ADO buses stop at certain locations, and there are collectivos (shared taxis) that run between Cancun and other cities like Tulum. Plus, there are plenty of tour companies that offer transportation options as well.

Are there Mayan pyramids in Cancun?

In the Cancun City Hotel Zone, there are three incredible archaeological sites: El Rey, San Miguelito, and Yamil Lu’um. Plus, for those who want to delve even deeper, the Museo Maya de Cancun is also located here.

Traveling to 🇲🇽 Mexico soon?

I recommend these travel resources for Mexico that I personally use:

🏨 Hotels : I have found that Expedia and Booking.com consistently have the best deals on hotels and resorts in Mexico. If you prefer to stay at a vacation rental, check VRBO that is usually cheaper than AirBnB’s added fees!

✈️ Flights : To find the best flight deals to Mexico, I always use Kayak . Remember to subscribe to their price alerts for the travel dates you want. Another great alternative for flight deals is Expedia .

🚗 Rental Cars : I always use and highly recommend Discover Cars because it allows me to compare several car rental companies and view ratings on various factors such as overall value, pick-up procedure, agent efficiency, car condition, and total time taken.

🚙 Cancun   Airport Transportation : For the fastest and easiest way to travel, I suggest arranging a private transfer with Cancun Airport Transportation . Honestly, no better way to travel from the airport to your hotel or resort.

🤿 Tours & Activities: For tours and activities in Mexico, I highly recommend using either Viator or GetYourGuide . These websites offer a full refund if you cancel your booking 24 hours before the start of the tour, and they also provide excellent customer service in case of any issues.

🚨 Travel Insurance: I always suggest purchasing travel insurance as a precaution before traveling, especially after a recent accident in a taxi in Mexico. For short trips, I recommend Travel Insurance Master , whereas for digital nomads, Safety Wing is a better option.

📷 Best Camera for your trip: I always carry with me a GoPro , It’s light, compact, takes great video and pictures, and most importantly, it’s waterproof ! You just can’t go wrong with one. If you are interested in higher quality video and photography, I always carry with me on my trips and highly recommend the Sony A7IV  which I think is the best travel DSLR Camera out there.

☀️ Biodegradable Sunscreen : Remember to include a good sunscreen to protect yourself from the summer sun. I always use and suggest  Sun Bum Sunscreen , which is vegan, reef-friendly, and cruelty-free.

Must-Visit Mayan Ruins Near Cancún, Mexico

The waterfront Mayan ruins at Tulum make a great day trip from Cancún

The folklore, rituals and science of the ancient Mayan civilization are intriguing. Indigenous to parts of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras, the ancient Maya had prolific beliefs regarding life cycles, the cosmos and higher powers. And you can explore what’s left of their culture at different sites throughout the region. From Chichén Itzá to San Miguelito, here are the best Mayan ruins near Cancún.

Book Culture Trip’s exclusive, nine-day Yucatán Peninsula tour and visit the best Mayan ruins in the region for yourself.

Chichén Itzá

The ancient city of Chichén Itzá is among the most iconic of all the Mayan ruins, receiving more than 2m visitors each year. You could spend an entire day admiring these Instagram-worthy structures, but some stand out above the rest. Among them is the Temple of Kukulkán (El Castillo), a stepped pyramid standing 98ft (30m) high; it’s part of the reason Chichén Itzá was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Less accessible than Chichén Itzá, the Cobá ruins, which really merit a day trip, feel more like an Indiana Jones-style jungle adventure, with lush greenery creating an atmospheric setting for this ancient city. Cobá is most notable for having the largest amount of sacbes (white-stone roads) of any ancient Mayan site. You can follow these pathways from the main pyramid to small villages where ancient Mayans used to rest at night. The opportunity to stroll, cycle or be driven around these protected sites makes it the perfect outing from Cancún.

Tulum Ruins

Torn between history and lazing by the Caribbean Sea? Head to the magnificent Tulum site, where ruins stand on a cliff above the waves. This ancient city was once a seaport for traders in jade and turquoise – and with an abundance of theories and myths surrounding certain structures, it’s a fascinating place to explore at your leisure before throwing down your towel and taking a dip.

Want to visit a historic Mayan site but be back in town for nightfall? El Rey, with abundant flora and fauna, is easily accessible from Cancún and makes for a lovely half-day getaway, ensuring you don’t miss valuable clubbing time. Not much information surrounding the various structures can be found on-site, but here’s our advice: hire a private tour guide who’ll be well-versed in spilling well-I-never stories about ancient Mayan customs and beliefs.

Xel-Há is rich in history related to the Mayan people. Archaeologists have traced the importance of these ruins back to the civilization’s belief in the spiritual goddess of fertility. Xel-Há (which means “where water is born”) was used as a place of departure to other sites where rituals were performed. The stories of what happened here are moving, but also notable is the surrounding terrain, which is pockmarked with cenotes (sinkholes) and home to an ecopark. Visit Xel-Há and you could easily end up staying all day.

Ruins of Ixchel Temple

Isla Mujeres is a sliver of coral and sand in the Caribbean shallows just off Cancún. The name, which translates as the Island of Women, was bestowed by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Hernández de Córdoba, who unearthed statues of the goddess Ixchel here while looting in 1517. Just a huddle of stone today, the ruins – thought to be from a lighthouse, not a temple – sit at the end of a trail overlooking the turquoise sea at Punta Sur, in the far south of the island.

El Meco Archaeological Site

You’ll find this cluster of Mayan pyramid ruins a few miles north of Cancún, overlooking the water just south of the Punta Sam boat pier for Isla Mujeres. Thought to have been the ritual center for a small fishing community, it was only cleared in the late 20th century and opened to the public in the 2000s. Immersed in scrubby woodland, it comprises a handful of platforms and one main pyramid, El Castillo, with views over the Caribbean from the summit.

San Miguelito Archeological Site

Opened to the public in 2012, San Miguelito is the northern extension of the partially unearthed Mayan city of El Rey – its ruins are located around (and under) Cancún’s hotels. The site gives a taste of what you can expect at the bigger specimens, with the main pyramid jutting over the bird-filled tropical forest. There’s also an excellent little museum crammed with artifacts.
