Napa Valley Wine Trolley – Daily Tour

Explore California wine country aboard one of the Napa Valley Wine Trolleys, which resemble San Francisco's iconic open-air cable cars. The six-hour Daily Tour stops at three wineries in the lower half of the valley; specific wineries vary from day to day. Thanks to generally good weather year-round, California's Napa and Sonoma Valleys welcome visitors throughout the year. But if you want a genuinely idyllic wine country experience, the best time to visit is in the late summer and early fall—roughly late August through mid-September—when vines are still weighed down by massive clusters of grapes and wineries are aflutter with harvest activity. The days are still plenty long, with warm, sunny days and cool nights.

Harvest Time in Napa and Sonoma

Peak tourist season in Napa and Sonoma also coincides with harvest season. While harvest season variers year-by-year due to weather and other factors, most wineries start picking grapes in August and continue through October. While visiting at this time of year is ideal, simply because of great weather and an abundance of activities, wineries are much busier, and you can expect to see higher rates for accommodations, increased traffic, and more massive crowds at tasting rooms and vineyards.

Fire Season in Wine Country

Fires are an increasing threat throughout California, and both Sonoma and Napa have been subject to large-scale blazes over the past several years. Wildfires are most common in the late fall and winter when dead vegetation and high winds can quickly spark flames.

With California's wine country drawing more than 20 million visitors each year and employing 325,000 people, winemakers worry that the threat of fire will keep visitors away. In all reality, it shouldn't. Even after the fires, most of the surrounding wineries, tasting rooms, hotels, and other businesses were open as usual.

Spring in Napa and Sonoma can be variable, with a mix of rainy and sunny days, but overall, this is a beautiful time of year to visit—as long as you don't mind bare vines. At this time of year, the vineyards are just sprouting their first shoots, which is called "bud break." Temperatures are typically in the 60s and 70s F, with nights cooling to the mid-40s and 50s F.

• The Napa Valley Marathon takes place each year in March, running 26.2 miles from Napa to Calistoga.
• Kendall-Jackson's farm-to-table dinner series kicks off in early May. These open-air feasts are held in the stunning gardens at the Kendall-Jackson Estate gardens and feature a curated menu from the winery's culinary team, master gardener, and winemaker. They're held throughout the spring, summer, and fall but sell out quickly.

Summertime in Wine Country means bright, sunny, and long days. Vineyards are typically lush and green by this point, and crowds and traffic can be intense. Even though wineries aren't quite as active as they are during harvest, there's still plenty of activity as winemakers groom their vines and keep an eye out for the first clusters of grapes starting to form. Harvest of grapes for sparkling wine can kick off as soon as August some years. Rain is rare during the summer months, and temperatures are usually quite warm—with daily highs in the mid-80s F and sometimes even higher.

Fall in wine country is prime time for harvest and other activities, but tasting rooms can be crowded as visitors flock to the region to see fall colors and ripe grape clusters on the vines. Most of the actual harvest takes place under cover of night, to keep the grapes cool, but many wineries host special events, including blending seminars and in-depth tours. Temperatures fluctuate throughout the fall, with some stretches in September seeing high temperatures well into the 80s F, and lows dipping into the 40s F at night. This is mostly a dry season, with minimal rainfall.

All the crowds associated with harvest are gone and, while the vines are now bare until the following year, the lack of people means that you'll find empty tasting rooms and peaceful tours. As a bonus, California's winter weather is still much milder than many other destinations. While this is the rainiest time of the year, temperatures often still hover in the 50s and 60s F. Olive oil harvest takes place in November and December and, if you visit in February, you'll likely catch sight of the vibrant yellow mustard flowers blooming throughout the valleys.

A land of sunshine, grapevine-covered hills and more wineries than you could ever dream of, California Wine Country beckons wine lovers from all over the globe with its laid-back West Coast charm. 

That said, a little planning goes a long way when it comes to traveling to this wine wonderland. Here are our tips to help you maximize your time and money in one of California’s most popular destinations. 

Winery tasting and tour reservations  

Reservation policies differ at almost every winery; some allow walk-ins while others require appointments in advance. We recommend booking reservations when possible even when they aren’t required, especially on weekends when the valley lights up with activity.

Wineries usually have tours a few times each day, with the last tour running around 3:30 or 4:00pm, so keep this in mind when planning which wineries you want to tour versus the ones where you simply want to enjoy a tasting. Tasting reservation windows usually run a bit later in the day. 

It can be tempting to rush around to as many wineries as you can fit into your itinerary, but we recommend taking it slow and truly enjoying each location – nobody likes feeling rushed through their glass of wine. Tastings usually take around an hour and a half, especially if there is a tour included, and can stretch longer if you’re enjoying the setting. 

Traveling with a group 

Restaurants and wineries in wine country are not keen on splitting checks for groups, and things can get a bit crazy when it comes to organizing finances after a day full of meals and wine tastings. We recommend using a bill-splitting app like Splitwise , which has incredible versatility when it comes to entering payments and settling up. Users can create groups, assign costs to specific individuals within that group and easily pay using Venmo at the end of the trip. Other bill-splitting apps include Settle Up and Splittr . 

Vacation rentals in wine country

Vacation rental companies like AirBnB and VRBO are hugely popular across the United States, and California is no different. However, Napa Valley instituted laws in 2016 reining in vacation rentals, and properties have to register with and be approved by the local government; a public  list details all the addresses in Napa that are legally operating as vacation rentals. That said, homeowners are still hosting plenty of unregistered AirBnB options, but as a traveler, be aware not every listing is legal.  Sonoma’s policies are more lax than its neighbor.

Transportation hacks  

Drinking wine all day is bound to lead to a buzz. Designated drivers are your best bet for safe, responsible exploration of wine country, but there are plenty of other options should all members of the group want to partake. 

Ride services like Uber and Lyft frequent the valley; share costs with friends and hop along from winery to winery without worry. The area is not big – Napa Valley is only about 30 miles from top to bottom – so rideshare costs remain reasonable.

California wine country also has plenty of driving services to help visitors travel safely from destination to destination – try Beau Wine Tours or Magnum Tours .

Should I buy a bottle? Tasting fees and bottle shipping

Wineries offer wine tastings in the hope their visitors will buy a bottle (or several) after its conclusion, and tastings in wine country aren’t free, generally running around $35-45 dollars. Some wineries will waive tasting fees if you buy a bottle, while others require more of a commitment (a multiple-bottle purchase, or a wine-club membership). Always ask about the policy, because it’s generally not advertised. 

If you do find that perfect bottle of cabernet sauvignon you’d like to bring home, it’s often more budget-friendly to take the wine with you rather than having the winery ship it. Shipping services like Buffalo Shipping Post in Napa specialize in wine and offer special insulated boxes and insurance to protect against breakage and loss. If you are a US resident, be aware some states don’t allow direct shipments of alcohol; make sure you can send your bottles home before purchasing.

If you only have a few bottles and are taking to the skies to make it home, checking a bag is also an option. However, wine is more likely to break and most airlines now charge checked-bag fees, so compare shipping fees with bag fees and make the call that’s best for you.

Finding deals in California wine country

California wine country isn’t exactly a budget destination, but you can find some savings along the way. If wine is your thing and you envision returning to the valleys in the future, a wine club membership at your favorite winery could be a good option. Generally, memberships afford perks like free tours and tastings, as well as discounts at sister properties. 

Other cost-savers include apps like Winery Finder, which offer 2-for-1 deals at more than 100 wineries after you get through a $10 paywall.

The first half of the trip goes through the SF Bay area, with a short stop at the Golden Gate Bridge. Then, you will be brought to the Oxbow Public Market, where you can grab a coffee, get breakfast, or simply go for a stroll.

The tour then heads to a boutique winery in Napa Valley for a tasting, where the cost will be waived if you buy a bottle.

The next stop is lunch at the historic Sonoma Square. Here, you can sample some of the region’s delicacies or pick up a bottle of wine and sit down for a picnic-style lunch.

If you feel like sampling more wines from other tasting rooms, you can add them to your itinerary and visit after lunch. From thereon, the second leg of the tour will take you to a boutique winery in Sonoma.

After learning all about the process of crafting wine, the tour concludes with a scenic drive back to SF.

Napa Valley: Silverado Trail

This country road has only two lanes that are flanked by gorgeous large oak trees and spectacular views of the sprawling surrounding vineyards. Napa Valley is commonly referred to as an adult theme park — and for good reason. It’s home to several of the most well-respected wineries in the entire world. Here you will also find Michelin-starred eateries like The Restaurant at Meadowood. 

Transport yourself to the Mediterranean with a visit to Castillo di Amoroso winery to indulge in wine tasting with a medieval flair, or enjoy some well-deserved rest and relaxation at one of the luxurious spas in Napa Valley. The Silverado Trail boasts equally as pretty scenery as Highway 29 but is much less congested. It runs through Napa Valley all the way to Calistoga, and as can be expected, the surrounding views are a real sight to behold. 

If you want to experience everything that Napa Valley has to offer, then follow “The Trail.” Dozens of wonderful wineries and picnic points line your path along the way, so you will really be spoilt for choice when it comes to food and drink options. 

Some of the most famous wineries like Judd’s Hill and Signorello Estate Winery can be found along this trail as well. If you’re looking for something more quaint, there are plenty of small yet equally as high quality wineries in the area such as Fantesca Estate and Winery in St. Helena. Continuing north along the Silverado trail and you will find yourself surrounded by gorgeous Coast Range Mountains, If you keep driving, you will soon reach Calistoga, famous for its mineral pools and hot springs. The Wine Road

Sonoma County is a key player in California’s wine country and no visit would be complete without a drive through its scenic landscapes and vineyards. Sonoma has risen in popularity over recent years thanks to shorter wait times for restaurants and wine tastings than those experienced in Napa Valley, along with its more casual vibe. Placer County

The wineries of Placer County can all be found between Lake Tahoe and Sacramento. Visitors can enjoy bolder varieties of wine here, reminiscent of those found in Italy and Spain thanks to warmer temperatures over the summer months. If you’re excited by the idea of soaking in the views of breathtaking mountain vistas during a lazy afternoon spent sipping wine and reading a good book, then Placer County won’t disappoint.

With wineries often located in regions with striking surroundings, it's no surprise that many organized visits highlight the features that make these locations one-of-a-kind. Whether viewing vineyards from up in the sky, pairing wine with creative elements, or showcasing the natural wonders that make up the landscapes, there are plenty of ways to expand your love of wine beyond the glass. Of course, you'll also get to taste the wine as you explore these unique winery tours from around the world.

1. Hot air balloon ride at Bodegas Muga (Haro, Spain)

Start your tour of Bodegas Muga in Haro, Spain with a bird's-eye view after being whisked off to a hot air balloon awaiting inflation. Along with a group of visitors, you'll assist in the pre-departure process before taking off above the vineyards and surrounding areas. For a premium price, opt for the private package and soar high with only your select group of guests.

Located in the region of Rioja, Bodegas Muga has no shortage of dazzling landscapes to view. Now, Campo alla Sughera is introducing an immersive virtual reality experience that goes beyond viticultural innovation. Whereas some wineries offer the chance to take part in the laborious harvest, this tour provides insider knowledge without the backbreaking work.

Simply don a VR visor and witness the many stages of a vineyard and winery during harvest time, from hand-picking the juicy grapes on the vines to transferring them to the tanks in the cellar. Additionally, guests will be guided through the physical winery, cellar, and vineyards to see where the magic truly takes place. Finally, the tour ends with a tasting that includes four of Campo alla Sughera's top wines made with varieties like cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, and merlot, offering visitors a peak experience from start to finish.

3. Icewine experience at Inniskillin (Niagara, Canada)

Although it's not exclusive to Canada, the country's viticultural repertoire is commonly associated with icewine. In Niagara, Ontario, Inniskillin is arguably responsible for much of this international clout, winning a top award at Vinexpo in Bordeaux, France in 1991. Since, the winery continues to produce exceptional icewine (and plenty of other styles as well), offering an icewine experience for guests who want to take a closer look at the chilly process.

To understand everything you need to know about icewine , taste a flight of three wines, sampling them in assorted glasses to savor the elements that make each one distinct. Sparkling icewine and assorted grape varieties provide a broader tasting experience for novices and aficionados alike. Additionally, a few tasty morsels accompany the wine samples, highlighting some of the many ways of pairing icewine. Considering the premium price of a bottle of icewine, partaking in this tour is a valuable way to discover what you love most about this unique style.

4. Underground cellar labyrinth at Cricova Winery (Moldova)

Anyone with a fear of confined spaces might want to skip out on Cricova Winery's underground cellar labyrinth tour. The Moldovan winery is home to what it describes as a "subterranean city" with streets holding endless rows of wine casks. Designed following extensive limestone excavation (to build a neighboring city), the roads are almost 300 feet below ground, making it all the more exciting to venture down during the guided tour. The maze of lanes stretches for around 75 miles, holding over one million wine bottles.

The tour makes its way through segments of the route by transporting guests on a small train and can be combined with a wine-tasting flight in one of the underground tasting rooms. You might even catch sight of exclusive wine collections belonging to Putin and other political figures. Cricova is known for its traditional method of sparkling wine, but you can also taste wines made with cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, sauvignon blanc, and muscat.

5. Blend your own wine at d'Arenberg (McLaren Vale, Australia)

A little work never hurt. At d'Arenberg in McLaren Vale, South Australia, winery guests get to step into the role of a winemaker at The Blending Bench. The real heavy lifting is done for you ahead of time, as the grapes have already been harvested, pressed, and fermented. Instead, you'll be presented with three samples of shiraz wine to blend at your discretion. McLaren Vale is home to some of the top shiraz vines in Australia, so you'll be working with the best.

Aside from highlighting the nuances of the different base wines, the process will finetune your senses and assist you in identifying the qualities you prefer in your wine. There's plenty of sipping involved as you hone in on the individual characteristics. You won't be going home empty-handed, either. Once you've completed your custom blend, it's transferred to a 750-milliliter bottle that you can take home to enjoy at your leisure. If you want to expand on this experience, pair it with an eight-course dinner with wine at the on-site restaurant.

6. Underwater cellar dive at Edivo Vina (Hrvatska, Croatia)

Scuba diving and wine don't usually go hand in hand, but at Edivo Vina in Hrvatska, Croatia, an underwater cellar awaits exploration. The winery doesn't age all of its wine in the Adriatic Sea, but a selection of  Croatian coral wine is aged in the watery depths . Made with local Croatian grapes, the wine is transferred to glass bottles and stored in amphora vessels before being submerged in steel cages around 60-80 feet below the surface and nestled in a shipwreck. The cool, stable climate and tranquil setting appear to be optimal for the wine's maturation process.

Following a short boat ride to the site, certified divers can venture down to the cellar with a PADI instructor. All of the required equipment is available for rent, making it a fun way to dive and see an underwater winery on the same tour. Following the dive, a mixed selection of wines (aged above and below water) is available for tasting along with light snacks at Edivo Wine Bar.

7. Art museum tasting at Hess Persson Estates (Napa, California)

For many oenophiles, wine is an art, so it makes sense to combine a sensory tasting experience with a visual arts one. At Hess Person Estates in Napa Valley, the two come together seamlessly with the on-site art gallery. Art lovers can tour the Hess Collection Contemporary Art Museum with the director of art, who spent dozens of years familiarizing himself with the pieces alongside the founder. Engage with the dynamic works in a small group as you explore the various meanings and sensations that arise.
