WHAT IS BLOOD BROTHERS THE MUSICAL ABOUT?

Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences.

It has been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as inevitably it “brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval” (The Daily Mail).

The superb score includes Bright New Day , Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True .

Blood Brothers

Book, Music and Lyrics by Willy Russell

Directed by Bob Thomson and Bill Kenwright

Presented by Bill Kenwright Ltd

Nottingham Theatre Royal – Touring

Tuesday 14 th September – Saturday 18 th September

This legendary musical is one of only three to have exceeded 10,000 performances in the West End. I last saw it over twenty years ago, so I am intrigued to see if Blood Brothers has improved with age. Does it just scratch a populist itch, or will it have retained the power both to entertain and inform?

blood brothers tour nottingham

Blood Brothers inspires a fierce loyalty in its audience. As I arrive at the Theatre Royal, there are droves of excited theatregoers waiting to go inside. It is lovely to see a mix of ages, from schoolchildren to grandparents, all looking happy to be here. The house is packed to the rafters, and it is such a pleasure to see audiences heading back post-lockdown.

Written by Willy Russell, Blood Brothers is the classic tale of twins separated at birth who grow up under very different circumstances. Inevitably, they cross paths along the way, which brings devastating repercussions.

Mrs Johnstone (Lyn Paul) is already burdened with a brood of children when she finds herself ‘back in the club’, this time with the aforementioned twins. Sadly or otherwise, her feckless husband has ‘gone dancing’ elsewhere. In contrast, up at ‘the big house’ where Johnstone cleans, Mrs Lyons (Paula Tappenden) has been struggling to conceive and is desperate for children of her own. A Faustian pact is signed between the two women as the former agrees to hand over one of her babies when the time comes.

blood brothers tour nottingham

Lyn Paul for many fans is the definitive Mrs Johnstone and it is easy to see why. In her farewell tour, she brings the warmth, the wit and the core of steel needed to portray this northern matriarch. Yet the necessary vulnerability is also present and is reflected in her wonderful singing voice. She has a beautiful tone and timbre; sometimes smooth like chocolate, sometimes suitably hard as nails, depending on what the scene demands.

Tonight, Mickey, the son that Mrs Johnstone keeps, is being played by understudy Josh Capper. He is a revelation. Required to age from being ‘nearly eight’ through to adulthood, he plays each stage with thorough conviction. Our sympathies lie with him from his very first entrance and his scenes with Linda (Danielle Corlass) provide several of the show’s best moments. Little gestures such as Mickey wiping his nose on Linda’s sleeve display deft comic touches. Corlass’ performance also stands out. I love the cheekiness she brings to the early scenes, combined with the equally convincing world-weariness of the second act.

Completing the cast is:  Hannah Barr  (Brenda),  Joel Benedict  (Eddie),  Tim Churchill  (Mr Lyons),  Grace Galloway  (Donna Marie/Miss Jones),  Andy Owens  (Perkins),  Robbie Scotcher  (Narrator) and  Danny Taylor  (Sammy). When the full company come together to sing, the sound is glorious. ‘Bright New Day’ at the end of the first act is a particular highlight.

The set for Blood Brothers is cleverly designed and seamlessly changed, from town to countryside, from affluent living room to municipal town hall. The level of detail incorporated into the props is also very notable. I spy a Silver Cross style pram, a Hoover and a Ewbank carpet sweeper. Even the seats on the bus have a genuine period feel. In conjunction with the impeccable costumes, prim blouses and pearls for Mrs Lyons, a floral housecoat for Mrs Johnstone, we are firmly rooted in a bygone Liverpool.

If, like me, you are a sentimental soul, then you cannot fail to be moved by Blood Brothers . It somehow taps into the universal psyche, in the sense that everyone wants to know where they come from, who their tribe is, and more tellingly……. what if? Its themes are universal. The ‘nature versus nurture’ debate rages on, class inequalities cannot be denied, and the treatment of mental health issues is all part of the zeitgeist.

At the end of the performance the cast receives a standing ovation. A quick glance round and nobody remains in their seat. It would seem that Blood Brothers has lost none of its power to enthral and captivate its audience. For this reviewer, it is better than ever .

Review: Blood Brothers at Nottingham Theatre Royal

It may be 30 years old now but the Blood Brothers musical still seems as fresh and popular as the day it was first performed.

There was a packed house and a deserved standing ovation at Nottingham Theatre Royal, where it is being performed until Saturday.

For those who do not know the story, it is the story of the Johnstone twins, Mickey and Eddie, one was kept and one was given away, and they were born and died on the same day.

Blood Brothers UK tour. Photo:-Robert Day (50866225)

For sheer drama — helped by the wonderful score — this musical cannot be beaten.

Lyn Paul, in her farewell tour in the role of Mrs Johnstone, brings plenty of power and emotion to the part of the abandoned mother struggling to make ends meet and virtually forced into giving one of her twins, Eddie, to the wealthy but childless Mrs Lyons.

The sinister narrator (Robbie Sotcher) always lurking in the background, questions the morals of the decision and hints at what is to come.

Terrified that the truth will come out, Mrs Lyons is determined that the twins should never meet but a series of coincidences bring them together and they become blood brothers, not knowing the truth, but as close as brothers — with tragic consequences.

Josh Capper, who played Mickey on press night, excelled in the role, transforming from the poor yet carefree youngster to the troubled young man struggling to support his wife and family — forced to watch while Eddie (Joel Benedict) has everything he needs.

From the first beat of the opening number, Blood Brothers draws you in and keeps you hooked through the highs and lows to the final tear-jerking conclusion. There is little wonder it is still going strong — SH.

Seen by millions all over the world,  Blood Brothers continues to be one of theatre’s favourite musicals. Memorable songs such as “Marilyn Monroe”, “Shoes Upon the Table”, “Easy Terms” and “Tell Me It’s Not True” have become staples of the British musical repertoire.

Blood Brothers is the heart-breaking story of Mickey and Edward, two brothers separated at birth but brought together again through an unlikely friendship. With their familial relationship concealed by their parents, who have striven to keep them apart because of superstitious beliefs, the pair find themselves irreversibly intertwined.

Despite relocating, their lives continue to be tangled, although the deep divisions between Edward’s privileged life and Mickey’s poverty-stricken existence begin to be a burden. As they try to conquer social divisions, their friendship is damaged and they are forced to deal with the harsh realities of class consciousness, with Edward leaving to attend Oxford, whilst Mickey spirals into a life of crime.

As adults, the brothers are caught in a vicious love triangle with Mickey’s childhood sweetheart, Linda. When Mickey is imprisoned, Linda’s subsequent depression forces her into the arms of a conciliatory Edward. A desperate Mickey decides to take action against his fraternal twin, which ultimately exposes their true identities.

Sadly missed – but I suspect it will be back

One of the Great British musicals – hence it’s long run here and Broadway success.

Hope to see it back soon

What an amazing musical, I was gripped from start to finish.. Very upsetting that it will not be showing any longer at phoenix, I hope they change their mind and bring it back!

it was excellent, i recommend it to all you guys xD

Bob obviously watched something else. I saw Blood Brothers over 100 times, mostly at The Phoenix in the West End, and in many other parts of the country, including The Sunderland Empire. When I went, Mrs Johnstone was always LYN PAUL, and she was brilliant in the role. That`s why Bill Kenwright chose her, out of all the women who have ever led the cast, LYN PAUL is the undisputed definitive “Mrs J” of all time. Bob, the show was not/is not terrible, it is gutsy, down to earth pure theatre. An incredible show, which needed little publicity, or big hit records in the pop charts. It has run, and continues to run all over the world, and it will return in triumph to the West End one day because it is real class. A giant amongst musicals…

I first saw Linda Nolan as “Mrs J”……such a powerful voice from a tiny lady, and to recover from cancer is amazing.

Lyn Paul is THE best Mrs J

OMFG. Best thing Ive ever seen live.

Love love love this. I was going to take my fella. I can’t believe it’s not showing at the moment

Fantastic musical- bob’s obviously got no soul!! See 3 different Nolan sisters and lyn paul as Mrs J- always fantastic – heart wrenching- going to see it again soon in Sheffield with the wonderful Marti pellow- long may it reign

Blood Brothers was one of the best shows that I have seen. It was great and so moving such a great story.

This is one of the worlds greatest theatre productions ever and it should not close

It was the best show i ever seen in London. Can’t wait to see it again.

Saw blood brother when it came to cheltenham a few years ago with school – LOVED IT. Took my boyfriend, mum and her partner to see it last week as it came back to cheltenham again, still amazing and I cannot even describe how fantastic the cast were! Maureen Nolan made an amazing Mrs J and the boys playing Sammy, Eddie and Mickey could not have been cast better!

I went to watch Blood Brothers for the first time in the Sheffield theatre last month. I can honestly say it was the best show I have ever seen! I cried, laughed, even winced slightly at the gun shots. Definitely worth watching!

we are currntly doing this in drama at uni it is a very good play bit of a sad one, i hope yopu all like it cause their will never be on e shown ever again,GOODLUCKGUYSSS!

Can’t believe the tour is closing!!!!!!!! MUST MUST MUST come out on DVD?!? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE – maybe a recording of the last night of the tour??? best musical ever! Les Mis is currently sold out courtesy of the film, and the same was shown for Phantom and Mamma Mia – BRING OUT A FILM!

A great show. A good story, songs and simple sets can be just as effective and enjoyable as the big lavish productions. I would like to see it again.

This play is what got my love affair with theatre started as a young boy. A truely fantastic musical/play that brought tears and laughter. You’d have to be mad to not like it!!

OMG Love Blood Brothers…did promise my hubby I would stop going to see it on tour and West End when I reached 50 times…. didnt quite manage it made it to 51 :)…. loved it so much and will miss it

this play is amazing x 🙂

Left me feeling as if I had been a part of the story. I was mesmorised from beginning to the end!

I went to see this last night with My lovely friend thank you. . At the Marlowe Theatre Canterbury. What an amazing show iv seen it in the west end & this show was absolutely fantastic too. Such great acting & singing. At some points you could of heard a pin drop with the whole audience focused on the story on stage. Love it but so sad too . .

I am from Canada and was studying in London for a month in 1993. I has no desire to ever see a musical. But one of the other students wanted me to go to one with her. she chose to go to Blood Brothers… it was life changing. I liked it so much I have been going to musicals ever since. It is still my favorite… I listen to the sound track all the time!

Been to see this tonight for the first time and I must say it was incredible so happy I went and would recommend to anyone…… I would happily go and see this again thankyou for an awesome evening

Went to see Blood Brothers last night at #GrandOperaHouseYork It’s the umpteenth time I’ve seen it & it was great but I must say #GemmaBrodrick was SENSATIONAL as Mrs Lyons! I believe she usually portrays the more minor character of Donna-Marie, but stepped up (literally), into the role of the wretched “other mother” last night. She played Mrs Lyons with such gut-wrenching honesty that you could FEEL her desperation & empathise with her as she became more and more broken and terrified. It is all too easy to play this challenging role as a one-dimensional “rich bitch” but Gemma made you really care, and understand what drives Mrs Lyons. Last night I thought her equally as much of a tragedy as the iconic Mrs Johnstone. The only time I’ve ever felt real sympathy for this difficult character & her journey! Bravo Gemma. Mrs J (played by her understudy, Chloe Taylor – who normally plays Mrs. Lyons – do keep up with me won’t you?) was canny, humorous, oozed pathos and still made you feel as if she was the only one who has ever sung that heart-popping song at the inevitable conclusion! Having said that the entire ensemble were excellent, full of verve and energy, with each member putting their own little stamps on characters which are decades old and, in careless hands, could easily become staid & dull. Standing ovation and four curtain calls! They did #WillyRussell proud! Excellent #BloodBrothers

Was an amazing night and a great birthday surprise whilst in York the acting and singing was amazing a very engaging and thought provoking musical

I’ve seen it a few times and loved it.

Brilliant show. Seen it twice now and the end is so full of emotion which can be felt within the music. Cant wait to see it again. Saw it at crewe on the 6th and the actress who plays the mother has such a strong voice and for me she made me feel the emotion of the play

It was magnificent imply outstanding It was great 4 my last year11 trip

I remember watching this is in school and I absolutely loved it. Hoping to watch it again! – great story line

I’ve only seen blood brothers 9 times all at the Phoenix. It is without doubt the best musical to hit the London stage. I’ve seen different stars as Mrs Johnson and they are were brill, the best I saw was a Barbara Dickinson. It’s a tremendous show and one not to be missed and when on in my area I will attempt to get tickets again.

Blood Brothers resonates with me so much because my dad’s family were a poverty stricken family that was moved from a terrace in a poverty stricken area in Liverpool out to Skem. I hold the show close to my heart from the graffiti on the walls on the set , to the Liverpool backdrop and the incredible job the cast always does of our accent. They do us proud each and every time. I’ve only ever seen Blood Brothers at the Empire and needless to say, there is a standing ovation each and every time Blood Brothers comes home <3

I’m sorry I missed the tour, my late husband and I first saw the show in London when it had only been open a short while, with Kiki Dee as Mrs J. Fantastic show, hope it tours again.

I would like to be an actor in blood brothers

What a show by a supreme showman Good Times Bill Kenwright! Perhaps he should concentrate on theatre and retire from ruining football clubs!

Just watched the Southend on Sea performance, WOW. I have never felt such emotion and passion from all the cast. Truly amazing performance and extremely talented, well acted and well sung. Would definitely wat unit again. 5* and AmAzInG

Very sad to see just a conductor and a computer in the pit in the performance in Derry last night. Really missed the live band.

Saw This in Swindon last Evening – Completely blown away, one of the best Musicals I have ever seen inside or outside of London, Fantastic Voices Superb music, and technically spot on the whole cast and crew were on point. A strong story Powerfully portrayed, with an Emotional hit . this is my New favourite

Review: Blood Brothers at Nottingham Theatre Royal

From start to finish the whole show was spectacular, and is one I would definitely recommend going to see

The cast of Blood Brothers

Over the years I have seen dozens of theatre productions, but Willy Russel's Blood Brother's directed by Bob Tomson and Bill Kenwright could be my new favourite. Throughout the show at Nottingham Theatre Royal had the entire cast had the crowd in the palm of their hand, with the audience laughing and crying throughout the performance.

The performance followed the lives of the Johnstone twins who were separated at birth after their mum could only afford to keep one of them, and gave the other to her boss who was unable to have children. However, the boys found one another and became best friends despite not knowing the truth, until their different backgrounds and jealousy tore them apart and it became too late.

Danny Whitehead was a superb narrator who kept the show consistent and took the audience on the journey of watching the lives and deaths of the Johnstone twins, and no matter what was happening he was never far aware. Mrs Johnstone also stole the hearts of the audience, as Niki Colwell Evans gave a witty and brilliant performance as the mum of almost ten children.

What three words would you use to describe Nottinghamshire? Let us know

blood brothers tour nottingham

There were also plenty of opportunities for the actress to show off her extraordinary voice. During the final moments of the show the audience was silent as she cried over her twin boys, truly giving an unforgettable performance.

Sean Jones and Joe Sleight were the perfect choice for Mickey and Eddie, the Johnstone twins, and tackled the roles perfectly and really showed the twins growing up from just age seven until their deaths. Whilst Joe perfectly showed how posh and naive Eddie was in comparison to the Johnstones, Sean did a great job at being the naughty twin.

He also wowed the audience by showing Mickey's struggle with depression and dependence on drugs in his later years. Gemma Brodrick as Linda and Paula Tappenden as Mrs Lyons also gave truly emotional performances.

Not only was the acting brilliant in this production but so were the songs and choreography, which were all made even better by the live orchestra who did not miss a beat. The set design was also beautiful and helped to seamlessly change scenes.

From start to finish the whole show was spectacular, and is one I would definitely recommend going to see whilst it is still in Nottingham.

Written by award-winning playwright Willy Russell , few musicals have been received with such acclaim as the multi-award-winning BLOOD BROTHERS. Considered 'one of the best musicals ever written' (Sunday Times), Bill Kenwright 's production surpassed 10,000 performances in London's West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the 'Standing Ovation Musical', as inevitably it "brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval" (Daily Mail).

This epic tale of Liverpool life started as a play, performed at a Liverpool comprehensive school in 1981, before opening at  The Liverpool Playhouse  in 1983. The musical has since triumphed across the globe, completing sell out seasons in the US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Japan, and scooping up four awards for Best Musical in London and seven Tony Award nominations on Broadway.

Blood Brothers At Nottingham Theatre Royal Review

Tickets to see the show were gifted to the reviewer and guest for the purposes of writing the review..

Reviewed by H Whetton Wow! Blood Brothers what can I say, it is a simple story of two families from different socio-economic classes, with absolutely nothing in common. It is emotionally charged from the very first scene, great humour, and a fantastic musical score. It is hard to write a review without giving bits of the storyline away, so I apologise in advance for any spoilers. Mrs Johnstone is struggling to get by, she cannot afford to feed her seven children a decent meal and her children are always in trouble. To make things worse her husband just walked out on her. Then there’s Mr and Mrs Lyons, wealthy, owns their own business, nice house, nice area, but the husband works away a lot, and they are desperate for children however, find they cannot.

The play opens with one of my favourite songs ‘Tell me it’s not true’ sung by Niki Colwell Evans who plays Mrs Johnstone. It swiftly moves on to show Mrs Johnstone who is working for Mrs Lyons. However, she has found out that she is pregnant just after her husband has left her. There is a really funny scene where Mrs Lyons puts new shoes on the table and Mrs Johnstone comes rushing in panicking over the shoes being on the table, whilst denying she is superstitious. Mrs Johnstone is in shock the next day with the news that she is carrying twins. This is where your moral judgement and ideals may differ. The one thing Mrs Lyons wants is a child, the one thing Mrs Johnstone has is more than enough of them. A plan is hastily hatched by Mrs Lyons playing on Mrs Johnston’s emotional and financial circumstances along with her superstitions and religious beliefs. Mrs Johnstone begrudgingly agrees that it is best if one of the twins goes to live with the Lyon’s. The next couple of scenes are heart wrenching and emotional, no matter how your morals are sitting it is hard not to feel the pain Mrs Johnstone is going through. Nikki Colwell Evans plays an incredible part, such emotion in her whole demeanour and voice. The narrator played by Danny Whitehead leads the story whilst being both women’s subconscious mind through songs like “Shoes on the table”, yet another great song. He does a wonderful job of keeping the emotion going and reminding the audience of what the women have done.

The twins played by Sean Jones (Mickey Johnstone) and Joe Sleight (Edward Lyons) were so funny as they portrayed the twins as young children. There is a great scene where Mickey is talking to the audience about how he is not ‘seven he’s nearly eight’ and wants to be like his big brother Sammy because he can do anything because is ten. The boys were never meant to meet but children will be children as they don’t care about class in society, only who has got a football or sweets. The two boys become best friends, ‘Blood Brothers’, much to the dismay of their respective parents. Mrs Lyons is convinced there is a plot to take Edward away and starts to suffer with her mental health, so much so that they move away from the city leaving the boys torn apart once again.

Paula Tappenden played the part of Mrs Lyons really well. I just could not feel as sorry for her as I did for Mrs Johnstone as it was her idea in the first place. You know it is a great play and performance when you become invested in the characters being portrayed on stage. In their teenage years Mrs Johnstone is rehoused into the country and the boys meet up again. The second half of the play is when the boys are around eighteen. Edward is at university, oblivious to the socio- economic crisis that was going on, did not really have any idea around money because he had always had it. Whereas Mickey had lost his job, no job equals no money. Edward secured an excellent job with the council, however by this point Mickeys fun loving character has changed. He is suffering from depression and addicted to his medication. He plays the part really well. Then the play takes its final toll on Mickey and Edward with disastrous consequences. Once again Mrs Johnstone is singing ‘Tell me it’s not true’ joined in by cast members. The curtain is drawn in on the evening. The curtains opened to a well-deserved standing ovation. Would I see this play again definitely.
