Everything You Need to Know About Being a Baseball Parent
5 Things You Need to Know Before Going to Ripken Experience
Everything you need to know before heading to a baseball tournament at the Ripken Experience in Aberdeen, Maryland.
If your team is considering entering a baseball tournament at the Ripken Experience, definitely do it. But before you go, check out our tips.
What is the Ripken Experience in Aberdeen?
The Ripken Experience is a sprawling baseball wonderland located right off Route 95 in Aberdeen, Maryland, which happens to be Cal Ripken’s hometown. Like college towns that are dominated by the local university, Aberdeen has become a “youth baseball town,” with hotels and restaurants catering to the baseball visitors.
Ripken hosts regular tournaments, starting in frigid March and going all the way to frigid November. Click here for their tournament schedule.
Ripken should definitely be on your East Coast tournament bucket list, along with:
- Cooperstown
- Frozen Ropes -and-
- Sports at the Beach
1. Ripken Experience Lets You Use USSSA Bats and Doesn’t Require USA Bats
Yes, the killer Marucci CAT USSSA bat that you bought during a Christmas sale, but haven’t been able to use legally in a game, is legal at Ripken. Unlike Little League and other youth baseball organizations, Ripken doesn’t require USA bats. So you will be seeing home runs at the tournament.
We actually stationed the little brother of one our players in the outfield to catch home run balls for mementos.
2. Ripken Experience has Both Turf and Grass Fields
Before the tournament, I asked a bunch of people if Ripken had dirt or turf fields, because I wanted to know what shoes to bring for my son, and couldn’t get a straight answer. I also had no luck finding the information online.
It turns out that Ripken has turf fields, dirt fields, and some hybrid fields with turf in the infield and dirt in the outfield. So bring both shoes. My son plays infield and outfield, so he actually had to change shoes between innings.
For a quick reference, here are the composition of the Ripken fields:
- Camden Yards : turf field
- Citizens Bank Park : turf infield, grass outfield
- Fenway Park : grass field
- Memorial Stadium : grass field
- Nationals Park : turf infield, grass outfield
- Wrigley Park : grass field
3. Bring a Folding Chair to Ripken Experience or You Might be Doing a Lot of Standing
Camden Yards is like a minor league field complete with stadium seating, but for the other fields you’re generally going to have bring your own chair.
4. Ripken is Not Good for Young Kids
I brought my younger son to Ripken Experience, and he had a blast snagging foul balls and home runs during games (they tell you to return the balls that leave the field, but that command is largely ignored and we left the tournament with a bounty of about 20 balls).
For younger kids, or children who are not going to be happy running around in search of free baseballs, you’re going to struggle to keep them busy at Ripken. One good thing for these kids is that they space out your games. For example, we had one game Friday and one game Saturday, and there wasn’t down time at the facility during those days. Sunday is single-elimination play, so there’s the potential to be there for a while.
I know this is not always feasible, but I went to the tournament with only my two sons, and left my little one at home.
5. It’s Okay to Inquire About Your Kid’s Playing Time Before Heading to a Baseball Tournament
This is somewhat controversial, but I think it’s best for all parties if parents know BEFORE the tournament if the coach doesn’t plan on playing their kid much. One kid on our team basically sat the whole tournament, and I felt horrible for the parents, who had taken time off work, driven all the way to Maryland, and rented a room for two nights.
From my experience, coaches often feel a lot more pressure to win at big tournaments like Ripken and deviate from their normal practices for playing time. It’s not uncommon to see coaches play “ringers,” who have not played for the team during the season, and sit kids who’ve been mainstays in the lineup up to that point.
One thing about youth sports in general is that parents who have been previously happy about the coaching can flip out over a single perceived slight. I’ve even seen parents pull a kid from a team over decreased playing time during a tournament. Yes, this is reactionary, but we are all capable of emotional outbursts when it comes to our kids and sports.
Coaches at Ripken generally did a good job at playing all their players, batting the entire team eve though you are not required to, and rotating kids in the field. But if you think there’s a chance your kids is going to mostly sit, it’s not wrong to ask the coach about playing time before you commit to the tournament.
More Thoughts on Ripken
Read below for more about Ripken:
- Parking . The parking is amazing. It’s doesn’t cost anything and spaces are bountiful.
- No admission fee . Yes! It doesn’t cost a penny to enter the facility.
- Bring food . They do have concession stands, but unless you really like hotdogs and soda it pays to bring some food. Tragically, the nacho cheese machine was broken when we were there.
- Hotels. The Marriot Hotel at the facility is super cool, but the other hotels are perfectly fine, much cheaper, and only about five minutes from the fields. Our team got a team discount at one hotel, so definitely try to do that.
- Camden Yards is by far the best field . It’s a shame if you go to Ripken and don’t get to play at Camden yards, which is like a real minor league park modeled after the Orioles stadium. My son absolutely loved playing at that field. The other fields are basically the same as nice Little League fields with a nod to a famous park. For example, Fenway Park was a normal field with a tall green fence in left field.

These teams will play 30-60 games during the season. Once the teams are selected, and if the weather permits, some managers may choose to hold workouts in the fall. Most teams begin to train indoors in January (about 1.5 - 3 hours per week). In the spring, all boys will be required to participate in the PAA in-house program, which begins in April, in addition to their games in the travel league. In-house practices/games are held on either Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursday, or Saturdays. The travel team schedule also begins in April, with the regular season running into June, depending on the age group. Teams may choose to play in the Suburban Travel League, USABL league, or just play tournaments. To avoid conflicts with in-house, designated travel days are Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Some teams will also participate in open tournaments on weekends. District Tournament play begins in late June. Continued success could lead teams beyond the State Tournament (early July) into the Regional Tournament (late July), and ultimately the World Series (early August).
Players are expected to attend practices and games as outlined by the individual team manager. Our teams must have priority to ensure a competitive program. Likewise, due to the post-season tournament schedule, players must be available into early August. An extremely successful season could continue as far as mid August.
Cost to play travel baseball ranges between $500 and $1000 depending on the age. Managers and/or team parents fundraise to pay for additional costs beyond the initial team fees

SHASTA CAL RIPKEN BASEBALL
Shasta Cal Ripken is excited to facilitate more baseball to more youth in the Redding and outlying areas. Currently, we are prepping for spring 2024 baseball. If you love baseball, you will love being part of Shasta Cal Ripken Baseball.
Which division does your child belong?
T-Ball $70 Co-ed ballplayers ages 4-6 learn hitting and fielding fundamentals in a supportive team environment.
Rookie $80 Designed primarily for co-ed ballplayers ages 7-9, this division makes use of a pitching machine to allow for more hittable balls at the plate and more action in the field. Runs will be counted, and three outs will change the half inning.
Minor $85 Recommended for ballplayers ages 9-11. Players build and refine their fundamental skills while developing game strategy and teamwork. In most regions, participants first experience post-season tournament competition in this level, leading through local, state, regional tournaments on the way to the World Series.
Major Division$110 The most experienced level of Cal Ripken Baseball, recommended for 11 and 12 year old players. Cal Ripken Baseball rules more closely resemble high school baseball rules, but implements some special rules as necessary for the development and welfare of this age group.

MAJORS AND AAA – COMPETITION LEVELS
Majors is a higher level of play than AAA. Typical Majors teams have players from more than one city, have been together for multiple seasons, have more physically developed players, more depth on the mound and in the lineup, or some combination of those.
We strongly encourage anyone who is on the fence to start the season in the Majors division. The goal of AAA tournaments is not to give a team the best shot of winning but to separate teams who will not be in any way, shape or form competitive with each another. For example, if you are hesitant to play Majors because you believe you will be .500 and instead choose AAA to win tournaments, you are missing the point and hindering development opportunities. Players grow when they figure out how to compete at the edge of their abilities, not when they take advantage of players who are not at their level yet. AAA exists to give more players more time to even the field while developing.
GSL Tournaments may suggest teams move up and or down based on results. Typically, if a team is over .750 or under .250 winning percentage with an average run differential of +or- 5.5/game, we will recommend they move either up or down.
Each age group (9-14u) will have the option to select AAA or Majors within your age division. Our foremost goal is to provide the proper level of competition to every team in order to promote growth, development and a positive experience.
The rules are the same within each division regardless of AAA or Majors (with the exception of 10u Majors being leadoff and 10u AAA being no leadoff). 10u Majors plays on 46′ mounds and 70′ bases while AAA plays on 46′ mound and 60′ bases.
When registering, please keep this in mind: If there were unlimited teams each weekend and we could split divisions however we would like, we would do the following:
- 8u would combine and play with 9u AAA
- 9u Majors would combine and play with 10u AAA
- 10u Majors compete better with 11u AAA than 10u AAA – this also ensures they can play leadoff and dropped third strikes. 11u throws from 50′ rather than 46′.
- If there are not enough 11u Majors teams, we would recommend playing up with the 12u AAA rather than down with the 11u AAA.
We will never make any adjustments without first checking with teams, but as a rule of thumb this is a good way to measure which division to choose.
Early registration opens October 1 and closes January 1. Teams who register and complete payment prior to January 1 will receive a $50 discount per event. There will be a price increase for the 2023 season due to the continued rise in costs of services, primarily but not limited to fields and umpires. All offline payments for high school events must be received prior to May 1. Not collecting checks in season allows our staff to focus on the event. Checks can be made out to GSL Tournaments and mailed to PO Box 64628, University Place, WA 98464 . Please list the tournament(s) in the memo. Any online payments received within 2 weeks of an event will have a $50 late fee charge.

Holliday's debut in No. 7 brings Cal Ripken Sr.'s contributions to Baltimore back to the forefront
BALTIMORE (AP) — In many ways, the timing was perfect when the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation held a ceremony at a Baltimore middle school Thursday.
Ripken, the late father of the Hall of Fame shortstop with the same name, has been on the minds of many Orioles fans this week.
That's because prized prospect Jackson Holliday was called up to the major leagues Wednesday, and the infielder is wearing No. 7 for the Orioles. That was Ripken Sr.'s number, and it hadn't been worn by a member of the team since he was still coaching in 1992.
Cal Ripken Jr. said he got a call Wednesday morning from Fred Tyler, the Orioles' clubhouse and equipment manager, about giving the number to Holliday.
“It kind of brings back Dad's contribution, Dad's name, how much he loved the Orioles,” said Ripken Jr., who was at Thursday's event at Lansdowne Middle School in Baltimore. “All those things kind of come flooding back, and I think that's all positive.”
Holliday is the 21st Orioles player to wear No. 7, according to Baseball Reference . That does not include Ripken Sr., who never played in the big leagues but was a manager and coach in Baltimore. When Billy Ripken reached the majors in 1987 with the Orioles, it meant Ripken Sr. was able to manage both him and brother Cal Jr. on the same team.
Billy Ripken was the last Baltimore player to wear No. 7, doing so in 1988. That was the year Ripken Sr. was fired as manager, but he would return to the team as a coach.
Ripken Sr. died in 1999. The foundation bearing his name works to strengthen underserved communities. On Thursday, the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation and Exelon Foundation held a ceremony at Lansdowne to launch a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) center. The opening marked the 500th STEM center for the foundation.
“It's good to celebrate numbers as points in your success,” Ripken Jr. said. “But then you also, it will give you new goals. ... The 500 is a big, round number. We're extremely proud of that, in a relatively short period of time, and we're going to continue to build youth development parks to create those opportunities for kids.”
The Orioles were in Boston when Holliday made his debut, but they're back home Friday night to start a series against Milwaukee . That was already going to be an interesting three-game set after the Brewers traded star pitcher Corbin Burnes to Baltimore during the offseason. Now the anticipation also includes Holliday's home debut at Camden Yards.
Holliday's No. 7 is the same number his father, Matt, wore for much of his big league career. Jackson Holliday was the No. 1 pick in 2022 draft, and nowadays, fans can easily track the progress of a prospect like that as he moves through the minor leagues.
“There is a little bit more of a buildup,” Ripken said. “That goes both ways. When you’re learning, sometimes you’re struggling, you’re making mistakes, and you don’t want anybody to see you learning. But then once you get good, you like all the attention in the world.”
Ripken made his debut on Aug. 10, 1981. He entered the game for the Orioles as a pinch-runner in the 12th inning — and scored the winning run on a hit by John Lowenstein.
There were certainly bigger stories around baseball at the time. That was the first day of games after a lengthy strike interrupted the season, and it was also the day Pete Rose broke Stan Musial's National League record for career hits.
Holliday, on the other hand, drew plenty of attention when he made his debut. He didn't seem daunted.
“He's 20 years old, but you saw him in the interviews last night — very poised, very confident in what he's doing. He wasn't overwhelmed by the big leagues,” Ripken said. “He might've been pressing just a little bit, because how can you not when the excitement is generated like that? But he'll settle in and he'll do well.”

Jackson Holliday will be first Oriole to wear No. 7 since 1988; Ripken family responds
Baltimore Orioles top prospect Jackson Holliday will wear No. 7 with the MLB club, the team announced Wednesday.
Holliday , 20, got the call to the majors on Wednesday. He will become the first player to wear the No. 7 jersey for the Orioles since Bill Ripken in 1988 and the seventh player to wear it in team history.
The number had been unofficially retired since former Orioles manager and coach Cal Ripken Sr. died in 1999.
Holliday's choice of number also follows in the footsteps of his father, seven-time MLB All-Star Matt Holliday, who wore it with the St. Louis Cardinals from 2010-2016.

Cal Ripken Jr. was quick to dismiss any concerns that his family might be upset about Holliday's choice of number.
"Our family is thrilled that [Jackson Holliday] will be wearing dad's #7 … Excited to watch him play!" he wrote on social media platform X.
Cal Jr.'s brother, Bill, concurred with the sentiment when asked for his thoughts on MLB Network show "MLB Central."
"I'm all on board with it," he said.
Orioles' young stars: Next man up: MLB's top prospect Jackson Holliday joins in
Jackson Holliday career
The Orioles selected Jackson Holliday with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft. Since then, he's risen up the ranks of the Minor Leagues at a torrid pace to become MLB Pipeline's No. 1 overall prospect by the start of this season.
Through 10 games in Triple-A this year, Holliday slashed .333/.482/.595 with two home runs and five doubles making up half of his 14 total hits.
He is projected to slot into the lineup at second base next to 22-year-old shortstop Gunnar Henderson, the 2023 American League Rookie of the Year.
Watch: Jackson Holliday hears he's been called up
Baltimore orioles next game.
The Orioles play the second game in their series against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday at 6:10 p.m. ET. The team returns home to play the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday at 6:10 p.m. ET.
Jackson Holliday fun facts
- When Holliday makes his MLB debut, he will be the second-youngest player in the major leagues. The other two players rounding out MLB's youngest three, coincidentally, are also named Jackson: the Brewers' Jackson Chourio and the San Diego Padres' Jackson Merrill.
- ESPN MLB reporter Buster Olney (kind of) predicted this moment back in 2013, when Holliday was nine years old. "Matt Holliday's son: Future All-Star," he wrote on X (then-Twitter) 11 years ago.
Notably, Matt Holliday has another son, Ethan, who was six years old at the time and may be a top pick in the 2025 MLB Draft.

The Sports Report: Lakers will play at New Orleans in play-in round

Howdy, I’m your host, Houston Mitchell. Let’s get right to the news.

You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Los Angeles Times.
From Dan Woike : Your eyes would tell you quickly.
The Lakers , at their very best this season, have received the kind of all-around dominance from L eBron James that made him the best player in the league — a surefire ticket to the end when winning mattered most.
But with 39 years on his bones and 21 seasons worth of mileage on his legs, James has had to pick his spots. On the nights when James has been able to play with his foot on the gas on both ends of the court, the Lakers have been as difficult to beat as any team. In the games when age and fatigue keep James glued to the paint, closing out on a shooter with his eyes instead of his effort, they’ve been in trouble.
Sunday, in their final game of the regular season and in desperate need of a win, coach Darvin Ham had a feeling which version of James he’d get.
“When we see that type of energy, it’s great,” Ham said before the game. “It lets us know — he’s pretty much always locked in, but again, we understand the stakes.”
The Lakers looked the way they were because James looked the way he was.
Offensively, his court vision carved the Pelicans apart. Defensively, he tortured Zion Williamson and took the Pelicans’ biggest threat totally out of the game. He had a double-double by halftime and a triple-double before the end of the 124-108 win .
“It just sets a tone,” Ham said of James’ play.

From Broderick Turner : Kawhi Leonard sat on the Clippers bench Sunday once again dressed in a sweatsuit, right next to Paul George, who was next to James Harden, the team’s three stars not playing in the final regular-season game before the team begins the playoffs.
The big mystery surrounds Leonard and his status for the Clippers’ first-round series against the Dallas Mavericks that will start Sunday at Crypto.com Arena. He didn’t play against the Houston Rockets at home Sunday because of right knee inflammation. He has missed the last eight games with knee issues.
The fourth-seeded Clippers made no assurances that Leonard would play when the series starts.
“He’s not playing today,” Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said before his team’s 116-105 loss to the Rockets in L.A.’s last regular-season game before moving to Intuit Dome in Inglewood next season.

From Jack Harris : For so-called superteams like the Dodgers included, there is a universal kryptonite from which even a $300-million payroll isn’t immune.
In a 6-3 loss to the San Diego Padres on Sunday, the Dodgers issued 14 of them, shooting themselves in the foot again and again and again to drop a three-game weekend series at Chavez Ravine.
Free passes hadn’t exactly been an issue for the Dodgers this season. Entering Sunday, they had the 11th-lowest walk rate in the majors.
But between James Paxton ’s wild command (he walked eight in five-plus innings) and more shaky performances from the underbelly of a worn-out bullpen (culminating with a tiebreaking three-spot against J.P. Feyereisen in the seventh inning), the team’s fifth loss in its last nine games felt entirely of its own making.
Not since 1962 had a Dodgers pitching staff walked so many batters in a single game.

Masataka Yoshida hit his first homer of the season, one of three home runs by Boston on Sunday, and the Red Sox beat the Angels 5-4 .
The designated hitter Yoshida hit his off reliever José Suarez in the sixth inning and scored a runner. Tyler O’Neill and Triston Casas hit back-to-back two-out homers in the first off Angels left-hander Tyler Anderson (2-1).
“The pitch count was up and we took advantage of Suarez out there with Masa,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “It was a good one, good game plan.”
After going seven scoreless innings in each of his first two starts, Anderson went 4 1/3, giving up three runs on four hits and three walks (one intentional) with four strikeouts.

USC BASKETBALL
From Thuc Nhi Nguyen : As JuJu Watkins wiped tears from her eyes with the corner of her jersey after USC’s season-ending loss to Connecticut in the NCAA regional final, UConn coach Geno Auriemma gave Watkins two encouraging pats on the back. He said a few words into the freshman’s ear.
What did the legendary coach tell USC ’s heartbroken star who set the NCAA Division I freshman scoring record in the crushing defeat?
“Go pro,” Auriemma joked later .
But even with the legendary coach’s light-hearted encouragement, Watkins probably won’t hear her name called in the WNBA draft until 2027.
To be eligible for the draft, domestic players must turn 22 years old during the calendar year of the event or have graduated from a four-year university prior to, or within the three months after, the draft.
USC FOOTBALL
From Thuc Nhi Nguyen : Isaiah Raikes’ nameplate over his locker barely had settled in, but USC ’s latest great hope at defensive line already is looking for a new home.
Raikes and defensive back Tre’Quon Fegans were removed from USC’s online roster this weekend amid their plans to enter the transfer portal when it opens Monday. As players flirted with , backed out of and entered the portal, discussion around the spring transfer window lingered over the final two weeks of USC’s spring practices, but coach Lincoln Riley emphasized that if the Trojans “lose a couple of guys, then we’ll replace them.”
USC also lost freshman offensive lineman Jason Zandamela to the portal this week, but Raikes’ departure leaves a more urgent 6-foot-2, 320-pound hole in the interior of the defensive line. The nose tackle from Texas A&M was expected to anchor the front along with Bear Alexander .

THE MASTERS
From Sam Farmer : Scottie Scheffler said all last week that he would pull out of the Masters if his expectant wife went into labor during the tournament.
Instead, Scheffler delivered a second green jacket.
The world’s No. 1 player was true to form Sunday, remaining steady through “Amen Corner” when the rest of his top competitors got wobbly during that brutal stretch comprising 11th, 12th and 13th holes at Augusta National.
It was the second Masters victory for Scheffler since 2022, and this third win in the past four tour events. Last month, he won the Arnold Palmer Invitational and Players Championship, and finished tied for second in the Houston Open.
Scheffler said he never allowed himself to relax with the lead. He shot a four-under-par 68 on Sunday, won the Masters at minus-11, beating runner-up Ludvig Aberg by four strokes.
