Where to go

Dubbed the “City of Falls,” Calbayog boasts of an array of falls and caves that should not be missed when visiting the city.

Bangon Falls

Bangon Falls is a must-see when visiting the city. It has four layers of a spectacular curtain of water cascading into a stream below. For adventure-seekers, hike to the top and enjoy the circular pond, where you can go swimming and even diving.

How to get there: To get to Bangon Falls (also known to locals as Bugtong Falls), take a motorcycle ride of about 15 minutes. Visitors can also choose to hike to the center of Tinaplacan, where the falls is located. The hike takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on your fitness capacity.

Tarangban Falls

What to eat

A trip is not complete without sampling the local fare. Calbayog City definitely has some things to offer for the traveling foodie!

Seafood is another popular fare in Calbayog, and the best place to dine here is at Kamayan sa Carayman. Calbayog is one of the commercial trade centers in Eastern Visayas and is the center of commerce in Samar. Its airport and a seaport make it an ideal gateway to Samar. Calbayog is subdivided into three major districts: Calbayog, Tinambacan, and Oquendo.

Points of interest

Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral

Constructed in 1800s, it is the central church of the Diocese of Calbayog. Considered to be the biggest church in Samar, the Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral being rebuilt and renovated through the years has evolved to a blending of many architectural eras. The old dome, the spire, and the thick walls are what is left from the original Spanish-built old church. In general, the Spanish influence in the architecture and materials used is but revealing.

Nijaga Park

The largest park in the city, it is named after the local hero Benedicto Nijaga. It is located beside the Calbayog River which separates Downtown and Brgy. Obrero which leads to the northern parts of the city. The park also has an artificial replica of Bangon-Bugtong Falls.

Sacred Heart (Julio Cardinal Rosales) Plaza

Located across the Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral and the City Hall, it is a conspicuous plaza with the image of the Sacred Heart where socio-civic and religious activities are held. Its bright lights and relaxing ambiance attract strollers.

Handumanan Museum

Around the city’s main square is the Handumanan Museo de Calbayog. The building was a former jail but is now renovated with a 2-storey 19th-century Filipino building look and houses a museum that tells much of the city’s history. The museum is also a regular host of art exhibits in this part of the country. The building is where the Calbayog City Tourism and Information Office is located as well.

Samar Archeological Museum and Research Center

Located in Christ the King College, opened on April 11, 1970, it is the first museum in Samar Island. It houses a collection of archeological artifacts including burial jars and covers, log coffin, jarlets, cups, howls, saucers and dishes dating back to the 14th Century; coins, heirlooms, old household items, religious items such as saints, altar, chalices, and monstrance.

Natural tourist attractions

Guinogo-an Cave

Situated at the fringes of Barangay Longsob, Oquendo District, Calbayog City. Accessible in a 30-minute ride to Cabugawan plus 50-minute hike to Lungsod Cave. Its large entrance leads to a natural tunnel with an uneven ceiling, some portions touching one’s head giving him an eerie trip through the dark, cool interior.

Mapaso Hot Spring

Located in Barangay Rizal II, Oquendo District, Calbayog City. A 30-minute ride to Oquendo from Calbayog plus 15-minute hike to the spring. “Mapaso” literally means hot. Fresh crustaceans (pokot) abound. They are naturally pinkish resembling scalded shrimps due to the high temperature.

Mawacat Slide

Accessible in a 35-minute ride from Oquendo District, Calbayog City proper to Barangay Mawacat plus 25-minute walk along the foot trail lined with tall shady trees. It is a natural spoon-like formation which inclines more or less by about 45 degrees and stretches 50 meters long. Water flows along this giant cistern and from the top one can slide through the mossy lane to the cool inviting pool below.

Bangon-Bugtong Falls

Located in Brgy. San Joaquin of Calbayog City, an hour-and-15-minute ride to Barangay Tinaplacan plus 45-minute walk to the vicinity of the falls. Among the family of waterfalls of Calbayog City, Bangon, Bugtong Falls is one of the most majestic and spectacular spots that is worth visiting. As one ascends the stream, he will be amazed to see a circular pond about 30 meters in diameter, wide enough for swimming and deep enough for diving. The cascading water seems to come from streams flowing endlessly, resulting from the pressure of its disgorge, which becomes even bigger in volume and noticeable as the time of the day passes. Bugtong Falls is not only a tourist spot but also a potential source of power for Calbayog City and its neighboring localities.

Tabokno Falls

Located in Barangay Cagbayang, Oquendo District, an hour drive from Calbayog City and 40-minute walk from the villages. A beautiful and scenic waterfall. This wonderful creation of nature is a favorite picnic site of local residents and their source of potable water.

Located in Danao, some 14 km toward the western coast of Calbayog City. Made up of seven chambers inhabited by various species of snakes and bats, as evidenced by a good deposit of guano. The cave serves as an initiating place for those who want to acquire a talisman.

Pan-as Falls

Located in Brgy. Pilar, Oquendo District, an hour drive from Calbayog City proper plus 1-hour walk onwards from the village. More than a beauty spot, this falls is the primary source of water for its residents. At places where the cataract is so high, the water falling into the pool below becomes a mere mist.

Binaliw Isle

Located in Brgy. Maguino-o, Tinambacan District, Calbayog City, it is separated from the mainland by the Silangan Channel. A potential deep diving spot, about 40 to 50 meters from the water surface and measuring less than a hectare in area. The islet is surrounded with aquifers equally and uniformly spread at the peripheral limits of the islet with white sand and pebbles. Beneath the deep waters are sea corals of multifarious varieties, rare white pebbles spread all over the floors, 20 types of shells, and ornamental types of aquamarine species – which can all be explored by the diver for as long as in his underwater gear.

Tinago-an Cave

Located in Barangay Lungsod, Oquendo District, Calbayog City. “Tinago-an” means hiding place. Its natural dark tunnels offers excitement and thrill to adventurers.

Malajog Beach

A 40-minute drive from Calbayog City. Grayish sand, blue waters, swaying palm trees, towering rocks, and three balconied cottages give this spot a South Sea island appeal. Magnificent view of sunset behind nearby islands. Made famous by the visits of VIPs, movie stars, and diplomats.

Lologayan Falls

A 45-minute ride to Barangay San Joaquin, Tinambacan District from Calbayog City proper and a 25-minute hike onward to the falls. It is separated from the mainland by the Silangan Channel. A series of towering altars of rugged stones where between its depressions flow ribbon-like cool water that appears to cleanse the hair of a legendary lady. A source of potable water for local folks.

Ton-ok Falls

A 45-minute drive from Calbayog City proper to Sigo plus 30-minute hike to Ton-ok falls. A scenic waterfall hidden in lush tropical vegetation. Nature has placed it out of easy reach to preserve its beauty. A source of hydroelectric power.

A ten-minute drive from Calbayog City proper. Cottages line along its grayish sandy shore. Its cool fresh water, scenic view of Samar Island attracts picnickers and beachcombers.

Bagacay Beach

A 20-minute walk or 7-minute drive from Calbayog City proper. It is located along the Maharlika Highway. An uncrowded pearl white strip of coastline with coconut trees offering a scenic view of islands and towns.

Bolongto Cave

Unveiling the Treasures: Exploring Calbayog City, Samar’s Hidden Gems

by Devie | Aug 16, 2023 | Blog

calbayog city tourism office

Embarking on a journey through time, we uncover the intriguing narrative of Calbayog’s name changes that have left an indelible mark on its identity. The pages of the 1973 annual report hold a pivotal moment—the first appearance of the name “Calbayog.” Drawing from the accounts of Fr. de Huerta, a notable 19th-century Franciscan writer, navigated the transition from its earlier designation as Tiayban to its relocation along the shores of the Hibatang River. In this exploration, a captivating tale unfolds, revealing the intricate evolution of a place that now proudly bears the name Calbayog.

In the present time, Calbayog City is home to around 186,960 residents, as indicated by the 2020 census. Impressively, it holds the sixth spot in the Philippines’ list of largest cities, considering both land and water areas.

My personal journey led me to an intriguing event on August 10, 2023. The Calbayog Tourism Office extended a special invitation to tour operators and influencers from Cebu, including Kapwa Travel, for a captivating 3-day, 2-night familiarization tour. From the moment our feet touched the ground, Calbayog’s hospitality enveloped us—welcoming us with live music and bright smiles.

Once everyone was gathered, we received a comprehensive briefing and were all set to begin the tour. The excitement was palpable as we headed to our accommodations, marking the official start of our exploratory adventure.

Attractions explored:

Malajog Ridge Zipline and Nature Park

Beginning with an orientation, we were informed about the challenge of climbing 1000 steps to reach the peak and witness the area’s beauty. Surrounded by the captivating landscape of Calbayog City, I was irresistibly drawn to the enchantment of Malajog Ridge Zipline and Nature Park—a haven created for nature lovers and thrill-seekers alike. With its wide views and the exciting rush of ziplining, this park is a true escape from the everyday.

Starting my remarkable ziplining expedition, I felt a rush of adrenaline as I glided above the lush canopy. The view gradually opened up, revealing the natural splendor that left me in awe. While gracefully moving through the air, a blend of excitement and tranquility encompassed me—an encounter that was just as astonishing as the breathtaking scenery below. Upon reaching Daraga islet, a boat was ready to take us back to the mainland, where we enjoyed revitalizing drinks to wrap up the thrilling adventure.

Calbayog City | Samar’s Brightest Waray Sunshine

  • 24118 Views
  • August 20th, 2017
  • in Destinations , Philippines

Calbayog City is one town I am honestly having a hard time describing. I am groping for the best word that perfectly fits that feeling of being in a hustling urban setting yet it secretly traps you with whimsical charm & dawdling velocity.

I have visited Calbayog City quite a number of times since I first came in 2012. But back then, I was only there for work & barely had the time to experience it. Other than snippets of the plaza, the church, tinapa & seafood, everything else was all about business meetings.

I haven’t been back since typhoon Yolanda struck Samar & Leyte in late 2013. But I have always been in contact with some local friends on social media. Seeing their posts about how lovely it has become after the tragedy made me yearn to visit it again.

Playing tourist in Calbayog City

Finally, after 4 years I have visited Calbayog City again as a stopover in my recent Luzon to Mindanao solo roadtrip. And this time I was able to experience it as a tourist on a real holiday! No work—-just loads of fun exploring its sights & yes, feasting on local food.

Spanish Quarter

Spanish heritage towns litter around the country. And Calbayog City being one of the Spanish settlements established in 17 th century by Jesuit missionaries is home to many memories of its colonial past.

The Spanish Quarter, tucked right at the heart of the city is a small district filled with rows of heritage buildings. It is laid out in quadricula where the church of Sts. Peter & Paul stands as the town’s focal point since the 1800s.

Around it are houses architectured after principalia mansions & bahay-na-bato, the old square now called Sacred Heart Plaza, the school, the city hall & the first Spanish structure that now houses the City Tourism Office & museum.

Calbayog Zipline & Malajog Ridge Nature Park

No doubt, Calbayog City has the most scenic zipline spots in the country. At 750 meters, it may not be the longest but the view over the turquoise waters of Samar Sea is absolutely fantastic.

The adventure begins with a 915-meter trek along the steep ridges of Malajog. From its scenic summit, a cable connects it to Daraga Islet below. And if you fancy those James Bond-ish maneuvers, this one’s a sure delight.

Malajog Beach

Malajog Beach is where everyone goes especially during weekends. Its shore isn’t swathed with white sand but it definitely has sparkling blue sea perfect for your beach bumming adventure under the Waray sunshine.

Bolongto River Cruise

If you prefer the serene scene, take a cruise down Bolongto River. This 45-minute trip takes you along the hardly seen side of Calbayog City. It is fringed with mangroves, nipa & a massive marble wall. With all of its pretty stillness, this river makes it a wonderful spot for stand-up paddle boarding.

City Forest & Malopalo Marble Park

Framed by lush emerald forest, the Malopalo Marble Park is a sight to behold. The stark palettes of glistening marble walls against the deep hues of greens & blues make it a real standout especially from afar. If spelunking is your game, this place offers a real good caving experience too.

Isla Pawikan & Biyatungan Island

Just across Malajog Beach are Isla Pawikan & Biyatungan Island currently being explored for snorkeling & diving. Initial underwater surveys showed a luminescent underworld teeming with corals & other exotic marine life.

Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Grotto

Since it came about in 2010, the grotto of the Queen of the Most Holy Rosary in Malajog is one of the most visited sights in Calbayog City. This Marian center is a retreat site with a chapel & a simple accommodation for guests.

Nijaga Park

Named after a local hero, Benedicto Nijaga, this riverside park comes to life at night. As dusk falls, everyone gathers here for streetfood. What one thing beautiful about it is they put order & sanitation facilities ensuring a safe venue to enjoy streetfood-dining experience.

Chasing Waterfalls

Calbayog City is also known as a waterfall city with lots of cascades to chase. Among the most popular falls are Bangon, Tarangban & Pan-as. Bangon Falls in Brgy. San Joaquin is the most visited because of its accessibility & multi-tiered chutes.

Surely, no one goes hungry in Calbayog City. Being a coastal town, expect an overload of seafood dishes to fill your gastronomic wanderings. But above its famed Waray cuisine, the city is known for having the best tinapa or smoked fish in the country.

Another must-try here too is Humba de Calbayog, a sweet-salty pork stew uniquely prepared with peanuts.

Calbayog City is the center of trade, commerce, education & tourism in Samar Province . It has a small domestic airport servicing daily flights from Manila & Cebu. It also boasts of premium hotels like Ciriaco & Baypark.

For its secret trappings of quaintness, adventure, convenience & gentility, Calbayog City is truly one town I will never grow tired visiting over & over.

Malajog Beach, Ridge Nature Park and Zipline In One Place Part 2

calbayog city tourism office

A nature trail snaking through dense forest, climbing marble and limestone formations, and along the way stopping by pockets of view decks, and finally ending up at the tip of the land jutting out into the sea, is just half of the adventure that the Malajog Ridge View will be offering to tourists.

The other half of the adventure will be the zip line that starts from a platform at the tip of the ridge and ends at Daraga islet across Malajog Beach. The zip line is estimated to cover a distance of about 850 meters, and hopes to enter into the country’s record book as the first mountain to island zip line.   Read More:   http://www.calbayogjournal.com/calbayog-hopes-malajog-zip-line-will-bring-zip-to-local-tourism

MALAJOG BEACH AND RIDGE PARK

calbayog city tourism office

For the thrill seekers, there is the Calbayog Zipline and Malajog Ridge Nature Park which features a 750m zip line with an elevation of 57 meter above sea level from its launch deck. Guests enjoy the cool sea breeze as they glide over Malajog Beach. At the other end of the zip line is Daraga Islet where the zip line crew awaits your landing. A pump boat will then sail you back to the beach.

The Calbayog Zip line is open every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Walk-in guests are welcome but we highly suggest that you book in advance by calling the Calbayog City Tourism Office through these numbers: 0917-566-2564 (Dia), 0917-586-0389 (Pretty) and 0917-792-4041 (Jesyle).   Read More: https://www.pinasmuna.com/2016/07/travel-guide-calbayog-city.html

Hi Mervs, Nice itinerary pero parang kulang. Di mo sinama ang Guiuan. It's a VERY HISTORIC and BEAUTIFUL place. Research about it. ;) Joel

calbayog city tourism office

Okay, I must admit this is better. ^_^ I got confused with where to set a starting point in Samar after I read your last two post. Thanks for such as detailed info.

calbayog city tourism office

@Joel - that's why this is just a "SAMAR Travel Guide"... I've never been to Guiuan kaya hindi cya kasama dito... Nag side trip lang ako sa Balangiga... I'll create an Eastern Samar Travel Guide pag nakapunta na ako dun... Thanks!

@Glen - thanks for appreciating... hope it would help you when to plan a visit to Samar.. ^_^

I wish I could. ^_^ I'll be having my first vacation from work on October 2012. I'm looking forward to visiting Palawan and I've had downloaded quite a handful of reviews from other Pinoy Travel Bloggers. Do you happen to have posts about Palawan? Thanks. ^_^

@Glen - wo! great choice! I've only been to Coron... Check this out --- http://www.pinoyadventurista.com/search/label/Palawan

Great! Thanks for the link. ^_^

Cool! When in Eastern Samar, do visit the lowly but beautiful town of Sulat (lots of old houses lined up, para ka lang nasa Vigan), the surprisingly vibrant city of Borongan, and Calicoan Island in Guiuan: nice beaches, good diving site. I hope very soon maging operational na ang commercial flights to Guiuan because they have a nice charter airport which used to be a classified airport by the US during the war. And of course the gem that is Guiuan Church...the most beautiful church I've seen in Visayas. :)

I really appreciate this post.It is very informative. :D

ganda po ng mga pics, anyways ask ko lang kung magkano aabutin ang fare mula manila at kung ano ang marecommend mo na means of travel from manila. maraming salamat. DirectionsOnWeb.blogspot.com

Your ITs are very helpful talaga. As always. :D

Very detailed Mervz. Yung walang idea kung saan at paano pumunta ay makakarating talaga. Been to Samar several times pero work related. This will help me pag tourism na ang punta ko hehe

@belladonna - thanks a lot po... cheers!!! ^_^ @Lagalag - Salamat... i would still recommend a direct flight from Manila to Calbayog or Tacloban then from there, travel by land... pwede din naman mag bus ka from Manila if you have time to spare... ^_^

@Elal - Thanks a lot... hope it could help you plan your next trip! ^_^ @Aleah - salamat po... ay ganun? sana nga next time magkaroon ka na ng time for some R&R... nice din kc ang beaches sa Samar especially sa Marabut... :)

Ikaw na talaga ang itinerary expert Mervs! this is very detailed! :)

I haven't been to Samar but I will bookmark this page and use it as reference pag nagka chance ako pumunta. Very informative and useful post!

hi mervz! patrick of DOT8 here.. thanks sa mga blogs mo.. we never got to meet nung nandito ka.. anyway Dir. Tiopes would like to extend her thanks for continuously blogging about Region8. we do hope we could meet up soon.

@Simurg - ahehehe! thanks Francis! @lakwatsero - salamat po.. visit Samar po... it's a nice place and has a lot of thing and places to explore...

@Patrick - salamat patrick... salamat din sa lahat ng help.. please give my regards to Fir Tiopes... till next time po... see you soon! :)

Nice opener for the province of Samar... See Guian as well, Calicoan Island is a hidden paradise there. I've never been there but base from the magazines it is a worthy to discover that hidden of Eastern Samar.

calbayog city tourism office

I am from Borongan but I am ashamed to admit na di ko pa nalibot ang lalawigan na aking pinagmulan. Magagamit ko itong itinerary kung sakaling makauwi ako ngayong taon. :)

hi Pinoy Adventurista, Just asking where did you stay in tacloban city? we'll be in taht city by sun, feb 12, 2012. thanks!

I stayed at GV hotel Tacloban

Just booked a flight here for october! balak ko sana mag biri kaso sabi maalon daw sa ganung panahon? hanap ako ng backup dito sa blog mo mervz :)

nice daw ang Biri... di pa rin ako nakakapunta dun eh... hehehe! enjoy and have fun in Samar! :)

calbayog city tourism office

Hi Pinoy Adventurista! My family is from Samar (Western Samar) and I've spent all the summers of my youth visiting this enchanted province. I know how to speak Waray and really, Samar is the home of my soul. But I'm ashamed to say that I haven't even visited some of the destinations in your post. While I've been to Northern Samar and Samar, I haven't even set foot on Eastern Samar (that's my goal for 2013!) Biri is an awesome place--went there August 2011 and it's simply awe-inspiring :) Thank you for your posts, which simply make me homesick. Must visit the hometown soon :)

calbayog city tourism office

Im from Samar too and been around these sites as well. Tourism is slowly popping now in the province thanks to some individuals leading the way like the pioneers of extreme caving. Samar has also some notable falls to be proud of. Usually when I take friends to tour Samar, I suggest to start from Northern Samar (there's a direct flight from Manila to Catarman) and visit Biri from there. Then the same route as this. Although I haven't been around much in Eastern Samar, it's on the check list with Calicoan Island in Guiuan on top.

HI Pinoy Adventurista! I just wanna ask, how much is the fee if you'll get a local tour guide 'round Eastern Samar?

naku, di po ako sure kung how much, di ko pa kasi na-try... madali lang po mag ikot sa samar, maganda po ang transportation system nila dyan, so i think di na kailangan ng guide... :)
