Todd Barry: The Crowd Work Tour is a 2014 stand-up comedy film that follows Todd Barry, a veteran comedian, as he embarks on a unique comedy tour across the United States. Rather than performing a scripted set each night, Barry relies solely on his quick wit and audience interaction, improvising the entirety of his act through crowd work.
Throughout the film, Barry performs in a variety of venues ranging from small clubs to large theaters, interacting with audience members to create a completely new and unpredictable comedy experience each night. His ability to improvise on the spot is incredibly impressive and results in hilarious banter with members of the audience.
The film includes several of Barry's comedic colleagues and friends, including Robert Buscemi and Daryl Shuttleworth, who join him on tour and provide commentary on his unique approach to stand-up comedy. They discuss the challenges and rewards of crowd work, and how it demands a unique set of skills to keep an audience engaged and entertained for an entire set.
One of the most entertaining aspects of the film is watching Barry interact with different audiences and adapt his material to suit each crowd. He expertly navigates tricky situations, such as hecklers or unresponsive audience members, to keep the show entertaining and fresh.
The film also showcases the various cities and venues that Barry performs in, providing an intimate look at the world of comedy and the hard work that goes into putting on a successful show each night. While the focus is on Barry's crowd work, the film also features several of his more structured jokes and anecdotes, reminding viewers of his talents as a traditional stand-up comedian.
Despite its unconventional approach to stand-up comedy, Todd Barry: The Crowd Work Tour proves to be an entertaining and engaging film that showcases Barry's comedic prowess and ability to connect with an audience. It is a refreshing take on the traditional stand-up comedy special, and a must-watch for fans of Barry's unique brand of comedy.
Overall, Todd Barry: The Crowd Work Tour is a fantastic example of a stand-up comedian pushing boundaries and trying out new, exciting approaches to comedy. It is a film that will leave viewers laughing and appreciating the art of stand-up comedy in a whole new way.
Todd Barry: The Crowd Work Tour is a 2014 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 10 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 7.6.

How would you define yourself?
Is it the job you have? The art you create? The clothes you wear?
Barry takes the time old comedian shtick of crowd work and begins dismantling his audience. "What do you do?" quickly becomes "who are you?" and suddenly our working lives seem absurd and laughable.
"Here we go" Barry growls with predatory anticipation as his victims trip over themselves, unintentionally revealing the real comedy of their lives.
What stands out to me this time is that it seems like audience ego that feeds and strengthens Barry to really start cutting deep. It's only the smiling meekness of Chris, the dog collar maker, that makes Barry back off, suspicious that the victim himself is…

I like Todd Barry, but I didn't particularly like this offering. I'm not sure it's entirely his fault. I think the idea and the product was totally oversold by Louie CK when he sent around his newsletter to his mailing list. I bought it for five bucks expecting to see the master at work.
Mostly Todd just tries to guess what people do for a living and is sometimes right. At that point he usually suggests "this is going to get good," but it never does. There aren't a lot of laughs, not much in the way of witty repartee, and I have to wonder why he bothered doing crowd work exclusively. If you think about it, there are seven…

After witnessing his quick-witted storytelling abilities on last week's episode(s) of Louie, I knew I had to give Todd Barry's work as a stand-up comic a more thorough look-through. And so I did. This is a tour that Barry did last September, but it's not just any tour. It's one in which Barry interacts with his audience and derives his material from that alone, instead of coming prepared. So it's completely unscripted. It could have gone either way, really. But it's clear from this special that Barry's repartee is entirely naturalistic, and that he really is just that good. It's a nice break from the sorts of comedians that I'm usually keen to fuck with, in that what's presented here is hardly ever vulgar or mean-spirited in the least. He's just gained a new fan.

I could gladly watch 100+ hours of this.
Review by JojoWombat ★★★
Todd Barry might be the most cuttingly sarcastic human being on the planet. It felt a bit mean sometimes as he calmly eviscerated the crowd, but also quite funny.
Review by sethbgvt ★★★★
Love Todd Barry, ever since the early 2000’s. But it’s been awhile since I’ve thought about him, until I saw this on Amazon. Now, it’s rekindled my need to revisit him.
Review by autopilot ★★★★
Very funny, laughed out loud watching this in a McDonald’s.
Review by The Ron ★★★
This was my first experience with Todd Barry's stand-up. He's pretty funny and basing an entire tour on improvised crowd work is pretty cool.

Todd Barry makes me laugh. He has an on-stage cool that I envy. Also seems like he has cool taste in music.

I would pay tens of dollars to see unedited footage from this tour; an excellent special I wish was three hours long.

Comfier than it is funny, really... I feel it could have been better executed / cut - show more of the shows, for starters.

Pick of the Day: Surrounded: Crowdwork in the Round (in NYC) 3/9
For quite some time now, comedian multi-hyphenate Mike Falzone has encircled performers with audience members and prohibited them from doing any prepared material and resorting only to crowd work on his creation, Surrounded . It has been a delightful monthly installment at The Hollywood Improv , but is going to be touching down in NYC next week.
That’s right, there will be a special rearranging of the Main Room at The Stand in NYC, probably unlike the club has ever had and the crowd will be as close and on top of the comedians as possibly can be. It’s a special, unique crowd work show (especially because Mike brings such a positive energy to his crowd work show) that feels more like a communal experience rather than being singled out for something you’re wearing by a comic who forgot their next joke.
Surrounded is set for The Stand on Thurs. Mar. 9th at 8PM and 10PM and you can (and should) get tickets here & here respectively for $19.72 ($15 plus fees) a pop.
Pick of the Day: What’s Your Problem, Sir? with Ever Mainard (in LA) 1/12 & 1/26
Two things we’re definitely looking forward to in 2023: the re-rebirth of Lyric Hyperion in Silverlake and way more Ever Mainard . The treasured venue is back on track to be more of what it was right before lockdown thanks to one Sean Casey and part of that will include Ever doing their improvised/crowd-work show that’s always such a superb thrill to be a part of.
Mainard’s penchant for being present and chasing tangents is one of the more enthralling and dynamic things we get to see out here in the LA comedy scene and an opportunity to see that for an hour should absolutely not be missed.
So, on Thurs. Jan. 12th & Jan. 26th (and then every 2nd Thursday after that) at 7:30PM, Mainard will take command of the newly refurbished stage at Lyric Hyperion to round the audience in the best type of chaos. Go get your tickets here right now for $12 a pop.
Pick of the Day: Birthday Double Crowd Work Show with Todd Barry & Natasha Leggero 3/26
Whenever Todd Barry is embarking on his crowd work shows, it’s always worth dropping whatever you have for the night and going. Some of our favorite roast moments come from Natasha Leggero roasting couples on stage or on a podcast with her husband Moshe Kasher.
Barry and Leggero together (along with special guests) should be truly something special and riotous, especially over Zoom (rather than squinting to see who they are talking about in the audience). They’ll be doing a very, very special Birthday Double (Todd and Natasha have the same birthday 3/26) Crowd Work Show via Nowhere Comedy on, of course, Mar. 26th at 5PM PT/8PM ET.
Tickets are $20-$50 and you can (and very, very much should) go get them here .
Pick of the Day: What’s Your Problem, Sir? with Ever Mainard 1/30
The freewheelin’ spirit of Ever Mainard makes their comedy dynamic and enthralling and it’s definitely something we dearly miss seeing live in person.
Thus, we’re really looking forward to the exclusive virtual show they’re doing come Sat. Jan. 30th where it’ll be a deep dive into the eternal question, “What’s your problem?” Mainard is set for this “wild night of vulnerable comedy” that is very likely the bit of the catharsis that many of us need as we can only shout at our walls in quarantine for only so long.
What’s Your Problem, Sir? with Ever Mainard is set to live-stream on Sat. Jan. 30th at 6PM PT/9PM ET. Tickets are going for the nice price of $5 and you can (and should) get them here .
Moshe Kasher’s Crowd Surfing Vol. 1 Really Captures the Joy of Crowd Work
In stand-up comedy, so much of crowd work is dependent on how quick a comedian can be on their feet. There is also a great deal of finesse involved as well. How perceptive one comedian can be from moment-to-moment can be the difference between unraveling into utter chaos and delightfully riding right up to that line.
Moshe Kasher takes great care to not only be as quick as can be with his razor sharp wit and ribbing audience members just the right amount on his new album Crowd Surfing Vol. 1 , but he achieves his goal of making it engaging and captivating for us listeners that weren’t at this particular taping. He succeeds in capturing that lightning in a bottle that is stand-up crowd work by letting audience members tell stories and then slickly threading his commentary throughout. It’s a clever move on Moshe’s part by letting audience stories sort of anchor the “crowd work experience” and then cutting loose with his magnificent blend of high and low brow references, phrasing, and graceful delivery/cadence.
Best of all with Moshe Kasher: Crowd Surfing Vol. 1: A Crowd Work Experience , you can enjoy hearing some truly top shelf riffing with the crowd and have zero worries of being made fun of.
Moshe Kasher: Crowd Surfing Vol. 1: A Crowd Work Experience is available now wherever you get/listen to/stream your comedy albums .
Jay Larson Is Going on a “Mostly Crowd Work Tour”
In this current wave of popularity that crowd work style stand-up comedy is enjoying ( Todd Barry’s Crowd Work Tour, Big Jay Oakerson’s What’s Your F@#king Deal?, Judah Friedlander’s America Is The Greatest Country in the United States ), Jay Larson is a comic whose crowd work you ought to get in on.
Larson is already fantastic at being off-the-cuff and riffing in his normal stand-up and whenever he interacts with the crowd, his questions are so off-beat and refreshing (just listen/watch any of his specials/albums over the years).
Dates and cities are listed above on the lovely poster by Geoff Tice and you can (and should) get your tickets starting this Friday, August 31st at https://www.jaylarsoncomedy.com/tour/ .
Judah Friedlander Holds Up a Funhouse, Crowdwork-Fueled, Mirror to America with His Special “America Is The Greatest Country in the U.S.”
This week, Judah Friedlander ’s latest hour of stand-up dropped in the form of what looks like Netflix’s most gritty looking stand-up special yet.
America Is The Greatest Country in the U.S. , like Dave Attell’s Road Work , is a compilation of several different performances, which gives you a true sense of what watching Friedlander on any given night might be like. You can see his cool wits about him over a plethora of nights pre- and post- 2016 election as he exquisitely does crowd work in NYC’s hallowed comedy club, The Comedy Cellar .
The thesis suggested by the title allows for Judah to satirically point out what makes America #1, spinning our issues of gun control, healthcare, immigration, etc. into positives. Taping it at The Comedy Cellar also brings in a very diverse crowd, often a bunch of international tourists that Judah uses to his advantage when pointing out “why” America, once again, is the best . That being said, Judah does have a few choice digs against Trump that don’t quite break from the premise.
So, when get you chance, be a patriot for once and give Judah Friedlander: America Is The Greatest Country in the United States a watch.
Here’s a Trailer for “Big Jay Oakerson’s What’s Your F@%king Deal?!” Now Streaming at Seeso

Matt Rife has exploded to become one of the biggest comedians in the world through his top performing Netflix special and his remarkable engagement on social media where he has amassed over 18 million followers, and more than 2 billion views globally. As one of the most buzzed about comedians in the business, Rife has been selling-out theaters and arenas around the globe and is currently on his biggest tour to-date with Live Nation, the Matt Rife: ProbleMATTic World Tour.
Rife recently sold out 4 shows at The Dolby Theater in Hollywood, where the Academy Awards are also held. His current tour sold over 600,000 tickets in under 48 hours, to become one of the largest comedy tours in over 20 years. He joined Taylor Swift as the only other live act to break Ticketmaster’s website due to demand.
Rife brings forth his refreshingly genuine presence along with elevated material that is quick witted and vulnerable. From a small town near Columbus Ohio, Matt started performing at the age of fifteen then moved out to Los Angeles two years later where he began his career in Hollywood.
In 2021, Rife self-produced and distributed through YouTube his first one-hour comedy special, "Only Fans" . In April 2023, the comedian bet on himself again and self-released his second stand-up special, "Matthew Steven Rife" on YouTube. The special was taped in Austin, TX and is dedicated to his biggest role model, his grandfather Steven who had recently passed. Only a couple months later, Rife decided to release a crowd work special, Walking Red Flag on YouTube, which has amassed over 10 million views.
On November 15 th , 2023, the comedian released his highly anticipated third stand-up special, Matt Rife: Natural Selection on Netflix, which garnered outstanding numbers including over 10.3 million views in its first two weeks and earning a Top 10 ranking in 42 countries including #1 in US, Canada, and South Africa.
In addition to stand-up, he made his television debut on MTV’s Wild 'N Out as the youngest cast member in history for four seasons before moving on to other MTV properties, such as hosting the reboot of TRL and appearing on The Challenge . Other credits include Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Fresh Off The Boat, BET’s North Of The 10 , and NBC’s comedy competition show Bring The Funny .

Ellen DeGeneres breaks silence on being ‘kicked out of show business’
Ellen DeGeneres has broken her silence on being “kicked out of show business”.
The 66-year-old comedian was forced to end the Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2022 after a Buzzfeed News investigation accused it of fostering a toxic work environment .
“Oh yeah, I got kicked out of show business... I became this one-dimensional character who gave stuff away and danced up steps,” she told a sold-out crowd at her show Ellen’s Last Stand…Up Tour in Los Angeles this week.
“I’m making jokes about what happened to me, but it was devastating.”
DeGeneres also quipped that there are “no mean people in show business”.
