Cybex Cloud Z2 i-Size car seat review

Cybex Cloud Z2 review

  • Frances Leate

In a nutshell

A sleek, safe, durable car seat with bags of style, a 180-degree rotation and in-car recline – but to use these features you will need to purchase the separate isofix base

What we tested

  • Stylish, great safety features, travel system compatible, 180-degree spin, adjustable headrest, recline feature, can be used with a seatbelt or base
  • Base must be bought separately, can only recline and rotate with base

Cybex Cloud z2 recline view from the side

German brand Cybex launched their best-selling, award-winning infant car seat – the Cybex Cloud Z i-Size – 3 years ago. Their newest version, the Cybex Cloud Z2 i-Size, launched late last year. The Cloud Z2 car seat has the same award-winning features as the previous model – the side impact wings, adjustable headrest, and 180-degree spin functionality – but with some new features that make it an even more appealing purchase.

The biggest difference between the Cloud Z and Cloud Z2 is in the seat's recline function. While the original Cloud Z could be adjusted to a flatter angle only when attached to a pushchair chassis, the new model allows the seat to semi-recline in the car, and to lie completely flat when used outside the vehicle.

The Cloud Z2 is compatible with a wide range of strollers, working as part of a travel system, and it can be installed in your car using either an isofix base or your seatbelt. The car seat comes in a variety of vibrant colourways, and retails at a fairly reasonable price for a premium product; similar to the BeSafe iZI Modular AX1 i-Size car seat, £309, and the Maxi-Cosi Pearl 360 i-Size car seat, £299.95. Although, you will need to buy the isofix base separately, which bumps up the cost. And you'll pay extra if you opt for a seat with a designer finish (the Fashion Collection and Design Collaboration models start at £339.95).

Frances, a journalist from Essex, tested the Cybex Cloud Z2 car seat in Deep Black, with her partner Paul and their 6-month-old daughter Cora, in their mini SUV on long and short journeys. They also used it alongside their Minu V2 stroller for trips to the shops and local walks and on a trip abroad.

Reviewer with baby in Cybex Cloud z2 car seat

What were your first impressions of the Cybex Cloud Z2?

As soon as I pulled the Cybex Cloud Z2 out of the box, it was clear this wasn’t any old car seat. It looked sleek, almost futuristic, and very stylish in the Deep Black colourway with attractive silver straps. It definitely lived up to my expectations. The material of the UPF50+canopy, which promises to protect your baby from the sun, wind and outside noise, felt particularly luxurious. I also noticed the bottom is curved and can be rocked gently, which I really liked, because you can potentially keep your baby sleeping for longer when you bring them in from the car.

How do you install the Cybex Cloud Z2 car seat?

  • The best way to install the Cybex Z2 i-Size is by using the Base Z2 , which retails for £209.95, and which is also compatible with the Sirona Z2 car seat for when you need the next size up for your growing babe. This is great as it saves you having to buy another base if you decide to stick with the same brand.
  • You can also use the Cybex Cloud Z2 car seat with just a seat belt in the traditional way if you don’t have isofix connectors in your car – handy if you have an older car without connectors, or you want to use the car seat in a relative or friend’s vehicle from time to time. When I did use the car seat with a seatbelt it felt very secure and hardly moved at all.
  • I found having a choice of installation really appealing. We previously had a car seat that could only be used with the base, meaning Cora’s grandparents, who live in Ireland, had to buy a separate car seat as we couldn’t take the seat and base on the plane. However, for the majority of the time, we used the Cloud Z2 the base, with the idea we would probably purchase the Sirona Z2 when Cora outgrew the Cloud Z2 anyway, so it seemed like a worthwhile purchase.

Is it easy to install?

I found the Cloud Z2 car seat incredibly easy to install – the easiest car seat I’ve ever installed, in fact. It took a matter of minutes. Used alongside the Base Z2, you simply slot the seat onto the base – the traffic light system on the base will turn from red to green to let you know it’s been placed correctly and is secure. I found this quite reassuring. It almost seemed too easy, I was worried I hadn’t done it correctly. The instructions were easy to follow, only I did struggle to find them at first! They were tucked into the back of the car seat.

How does the Cybex Cloud Z2 compare to similar car seats for this age range?

There are a number of similar car seats to the Cloud Z2 on the market at around the same price point. For example, the Maxi-Cosi Pearl 360 i-Size car seat (£299.95) rotates, lies flat and can be attached to a variety of pushchairs. Previously, I had the carrycot-style Nuna Cari next car seat (£250) in which Cora could lie completely flat. I liked it but it took up a lot of space. The Cybex is completely different. It's compact and still allows your baby to lie semi-reclined while travelling, which is arguably safer than a carrycot-style seat.

How is the Cloud Z2 different to the original Cybex Cloud Z car seat?

The Cloud Z2 is very similar to the original Cloud Z model, however, the new model allows the seat to semi-recline in the car and to lie completely flat when used outside the vehicle, either on the floor or attached to a pram as part of a travel system. The Cloud Z could only be reclined outside the vehicle, so these new features are a great addition. It’s important to note the car seat will only lie flat when used outside of your car. Still, being able to recline the seat at all while travelling was helpful, especially on long journeys – Cora looked much more relaxed and comfortable.

One of the selling points of both the original Cloud Z and the latest version is its ability to spin 180 degrees, meaning you can turn the seat to face the door when you are putting your baby in and out of the car. The spin mechanism has apparently been made even easier by the updated Z2 base which now has a larger handle on the side. I haven’t used the original seat, but I can say the V2 version is staggeringly easy to use.

What are the Cybex Cloud Z2 car seat’s best safety features?

The Cloud Z2 i-Size has a Linear Side-impact Protection (L.S.P.) System, basically little wings on either side of the car seat that tuck in when not in use and can be pulled out before heading off on a journey. These are designed to increase protection on the road in a side collision. Cybex says this can reduce the force of a side impact by up to 25% by channeling the impact away from your child.

This is incredibly comforting to know, although I found that I didn’t always remember to pull them out before heading off! I think it would have been brilliant if they came out automatically, or if they were a bright colour, as it might have reminded me to pull the wings out each time.

Cybex Cloud z2 Linear Side-impact Protection

How big is the Cybex Cloud Z2 car seat?

The car seat itself is very compact, measuring L64.5-75cmxW44cmxH38-60.5cm. Once fitted in place, using the base, I found there was space for another child (in a car seat) or 2 more adults to sit in the rear passenger seat of our Toyota CHR mini SUV if needed. I liked that I could sit comfortably in the back with Cora when my husband was driving, and there was room for my changing bag and shopping bags beside me.

Is the Cybex Cloud Z2 car seat rear and forward facing?

No – this car seat only works rear facing, which is the safest way for a baby to travel. For babies weighing more than 13kg, you will need to purchase the Sirona Z2, which can be used rear or forward facing with the same base.

Does the Cybex Cloud Z2 car seat rotate?

Yes, and I think the 180-degree rotation really does make life easier. Cora can be a bit wriggly, now, and getting her in and out of her old car seat involved a lot of stretching and leaning over. I think this feature could be particularly invaluable if you're placing a newborn in the car after having a c-section, as it involves no twisting or turning, something I personally dreaded in those early days.

You can also turn your baby to face the front of the car, useful when you are taking a break in your journey and want to be able to see your baby. You can't travel with the seat in a forward-facing position, though.

The transition from sideways door-facing to rear-facing is effortless, thanks to the innovative rotation mechanism of the Base Z2 – you just lift a lever on the side and turn gently. After using a car seat with the spin function I can’t even imagine going back to using a seat that doesn’t rotate. I found this to be kinder to my back and arms, and also just a much more pleasant experience for both me and Cora as we could clearly see each other while I fitted her in.

How comfortable did your child find the Cloud Z2 car seat?

At 6 months, Cora was already too old to benefit from the newborn insert, but it looked very comfy, and, again, the material felt and looked expensive. She seemed relaxed and happy in the seat on the move. She would usually stay asleep while the Z2 car seat was attached to my Minu stroller, or when I brought her into the house and put away my shopping. This was unusual for her. She usually wakes up as soon as I step foot back in the house, so I think she found the seat pretty comfortable. I also loved the fact I could gently rock the seat and put the hood up, to comfort her and protect her from any noises.

What are the straps like on the Cybex Cloud Z2 car seat?

I love the straps! Often, straps are my personal bugbear with prams and car seats because I find I have to adjust them all the time, or the clips move around the straps, something that is guaranteed to stress me out, especially with a cranky baby. But the clips of the Cybex Cloud Z2 stayed firmly attached to the straps, so I wasn’t fiddling around trying to get them into position. The straps fell easily to the side and out of the way while I put Cora in the seat. Adjusting them was a very simple and straightforward process with minimal pulling and tugging. The 3-point harness felt so sturdy, and, as with everything about this car seat, the straps look fantastic in an attractive silver colour.

Does the Cybex Cloud Z2 car seat feel robust?

Yes, I feel like this car seat is really going to go the distance. The materials feel premium, and it seems like such a solid, durable piece of kit, I expect it to look and work the same after plenty of use. I also really like the fact that the fabric covers are machine washable so you can keep it looking new and lovely for longer.

Does it recline?

Yes, the Cybex Cloud Z2 car seat does recline. I found the in-car recline feature very easy to operate, you simply pull the lever at the back of the seat. The seat cannot lie completely flat in the car but it does when attached to a stroller or pram.

Is the headrest on the Cybex Cloud Z2 car seat adjustable?

Very. The headrest of the Cybex Cloud Z2 can be extended to 12 different positions, which means it literally grows with your child. We only adjusted it once in the month we had the car seat to review, so it’s hard to say how useful this feature will be or if that many positions are necessary. It was very easy to adjust, though.

How easy is the Cybex Cloud Z2 car seat to clean and keep clean?

The Cloud Z2 stayed really clean while testing – the material isn’t the sort to scuff easily, so I didn’t need to clean it. To be honest, I wouldn’t clean it unless I really had to, as with a baby there’s enough washing to do anyway. But, I do think the fact the cover is machine washable is a handy feature.

2 pictures of Cybex Cloud z2 in car

How heavy is the Cybex Cloud Z2 car seat?

The car seat weighs 4.6kg, which is very light compared with similar seats. The Cloud Z2 is lighter than the original Z car seat, weighing 4.6kg compared with 4.8kg, however, I have to say I actually found the car seat quite heavy to carry when Cora was in it and even when it was empty. The fact you could place it in the car from the sideways, car door position, did definitely help, but I struggled a bit to lift it off and on the Minu V2. To me, this was the biggest downside of the car seat, although I appreciate that it weighs less than many similar car seats.

Does the car seat have a sun hood?

The sun hood on the Cybex Cloud Z2 car seat is lovely – a generous size, offering UPF50+ protection. It was very handy on a sunny winter’s day while we drove around, protecting Cora from the sun coming in through the window. It was so effective we even removed our sunshade on the car as we didn’t need it with this car seat. The sun hood went up and down very smoothly and effectively.

What age range is the Cybex Cloud Z2 car seat suitable for?

This car seat is suitable for babies from newborn to approximately 24 months (up to 13kg). It's worth noting, Cybex also makes the Sirona Z2 car seat (£304.95), which can be used for babies from birth, with the newborn insert, up to approximately 4 years of age (18kg). If you were being budget conscious, and you weren’t bothered about using the Cybex Cloud Z2 as part of a travel system, you could skip the Cloud altogether and just purchase the Sirona, which has a 360-degree spin function and 5 recline positions.

Does the Cybex Cloud Z2 car seat work as part of a travel system?

The Cloud Z2 is compatible with all Cybex pushchairs, as well as a number of other models by brands including Bugaboo, iCandy, Silver Cross, Stokke, UPPAbaby, Joolz and Babyzen, although you will need to buy adapters separately. I think if you’re happy to purchase the raincover and footmuff for the car seat, the Cloud Z2 would work well as a complete travel system. It’s easy to put the seat on and take the pram frame off with the adapters, my only issue was that I had to unclip and unbutton the hood and the bumper bar of my UPPAbaby Minu V2 to do this, which is easy enough but a faff I could have done without.

Any additional accessories you can buy?

  • Base Z2, £209.95
  • Cloud Z2 i-Size Summer Cover, £54.95
  • Baby Car Seat Insect Net, £24.95
  • Baby Car Seat Rain Cover, £24.95
  • Snogga Mini 2, £74.95
  • Platinum Winter Footmuff Mini, £154.95
  • SensorSafe infant Safety Kit, £54.95

I’d say the base is an essential purchase for everyday ease of use. None of the others are ‘must buys’ but are definitely helpful if you want to use the Cybex Cloud Z2 as a travel system.

What features did you particularly like about the Cybex Cloud Z2 car seat?

As mentioned previously, the 180-degree spin feature is an absolute game changer and the additional safety features like the Linear Side-impact Protection (L.S.P.) System really did put my mind at ease while driving Cora around. The fact it can be used as a complete travel system and attach to a variety of prams and strollers is another great feature.

Now you’ve tested it, what would you have wanted to know before buying the Cybex Cloud Z2 car seat?

It would have been useful to know exactly what accessories it came with and what you’d need to use it effectively as an all-weather travel system, such as the adapters, foot muff and raincover.

Is the Cybex Cloud Z2 car seat worth the money?

This is definitely a premium car seat, but I actually think it’s pretty good value –although keep in mind that purchasing the Z2 base will also set you back an additional £209.95. My only reservation is that you could potentially save some money by skipping the Cybex Cloud Z2 altogether and use the Sirona Z2 instead, as this is suitable for a newborn with the insert. The only downside is that you can’t attach the Sirona Z2 to a compatible stroller or pram and use it as a travel system – but for me, and the way I want to use it, that isn’t really an issue.

How does it compare to similar car seats?

MadeForMums verdict:

The Cybex Cloud Z2 is a sleek, stylish car seat that's designed to go the distance. It has lots of useful extras, including 180-degree rotation and the option to recline the seat, plus, enhanced safety elements to help give parents peace of mind. It delivers looks-wise with premium materials and luxury touches throughout.

The seat is perfect for those with newborns who often make long journeys, who don’t want to sacrifice on style. The fact you can install the car seat using a seatbelt offers some versatility of use. But, if you want to make the most of the car seat’s functionality, you will need to invest in the Base Z2 and this does add to the cost. The Cybex Cloud Z2 is a great piece of kit that’s well worth the money if your budget can stretch.

Testing the Cybex Cloud Z2 i-Size

With the Cloud series, Cybex have developed an ergonomic lie-flat position. Building on this innovation the newest Cloud Z2 can also be placed in a semi-reclined position while in the car. Our parent testers loved this new feature, allowing for greater comfort for the child without compromising on safety while on the road.

"As a current user of the Cybex Cloud Z car seat, I was very excited to try this new version! The Cloud Z2 is very similar to the original one however the new feature of being able to lie it flat in the car is a great addition. This feature would mean a young baby could stay in the car seat for longer which is amazing for longer car journeys. This car seat is very safe and I appreciate all the additional safety features it has, but still looks stylish with a sleek and modern design."

"This is a fantastic car seat overall. The near lay-flat position is a brilliant feature and provides comfort for the baby. It makes being on the go a lot smoother when the baby can take a nap in a lying down position."

The ability to swivel the car seat was also a favourite feature of our testers: "Loved this product. It is simple to install, comfortable for my little one and makes life so much easier with a newborn and a toddler. The swivel feature makes it quick easy to put my newborn in, which is a massive bonus."

Other parents also praised the hood, and the ease with which the car seat attaches to the base: "I loved this car seat, I would definitely buy it if I needed a new car seat. It was easy to use. I liked that it was isofix so you know it’s secure and your child is safe. The base lets you know easily if you’ve fitted it properly, it even beeps if you have it positioned incorrectly. It was easy to spin and lift the car seat off at the base. It’s a great size seat so baby looked very comfortable. The lie flat feature helped of the baby fell asleep in the car seat. The integrated hood was one of my favourite features, folds down easily and gives great UV protection."

Final thoughts

The only thing commented on was the weight, some reviews said it was hard to carry baby in the car seat.

Cybex Cloud Z Review

Quick Summary: As far as infant carriers go, the Cybex Cloud Z does it all, and more! It has all of the features that you would expect from a car seat from birth, including the latest safety features and functions to make life easier. All of the test results from Which? and ADAC give it ‘Good' ratings and commend it for giving excellent crash protection. We love the lie-flat recline as it means that baby is safer and comfier if kept in the car seat when you are out and about. It also takes away another worry or pressure from new parents thinking about how long they have been in the seat when sleeping. No-one likes to wake a sleeping baby!

Whats good?

  • Great longevity - up to around 18 months
  • Lie-flat recline position out of the car
  • Swivelling ISOFIX base
  • Side-impact protection
  • Base Z can be used for the next-stage seat

Whats not so good?

  • Takes a little while to get used to the positioning of the Cloud Z on the Base Z

Table of contents

Installation, day to day use.

If you liked the Cybex Cloud Q, then you will love the Cloud Z! As well as being 15% lighter, the Cloud Z is used with the modular Base Z which has an innovative rotating mechanism, making it the only infant carrier currently available with this feature. Outside the car, the lie-flat position allows your baby to sleep in a comfier and safer position with no time limit.

cybex cloud z travel system

To comply with the i-Size or R129 regulations, the Cybex Cloud Z should be used with the Base Z. To install the base, you first need to fold out the load leg until it locks into position. Next you need to release the ISOFIX connectors on each side by squeezing the front and back buttons and push them as far out as they will extend. Sitting the base on the vehicle seat, line up the connectors with the ISOFIX points in your car and push on until you hear a click and the green indicators on either side show. Then the base needs pushing as far back as it will go so that the brace is touching the vehicle back rest.

cybex cloud z travel system

Finally, adjust the load leg. The button on the front of the leg allows it to drop down into the footwell of your car. Once extended enough, the middle colour block on the top of the base will turn green and the alarm will stop. This alarm is designed to carry on beeping if the base is not installed correctly. It will also later alert you if you go over really rough terrain and the leg becomes dislodged.

Once the base is installed, you can add the infant carrier on to the base! This can take a little while to get used to as you need to place the back of the seat over the raised section on the base and onto both locking bars. After a few go's you'll know the position it needs to be. The swivel base must be in the side loading position or rear facing position. When travelling, the Cloud Z's handle needs to be in the upright position. The seat should also be in the sitting position rather than reclined as it cannot be fitted on the base whilst in the lie-flat position.

cybex cloud z travel system

The last thing to do is pull the linear side-impact protection panels out from the side that is closest to the vehicle door. The yellow arrow tags just underneath are a great reminder to do this! Thanks to this side-impact protection and the car seat's flexible shell, the first impact forces of an accident are reduced by up to 25%, channeling them away from your child.

Although it sounds like a few stages to complete, it is actually very quick and easy to fit the three points of the base into the car, and then pop the Cloud Z on top! To remove the car seat from the base, pull the button at the front of the base and lift the Cloud Z up.

cybex cloud z travel system

For regulation purposes, it is better to use the Cloud Z with the ISOFIX Base Z, but it can also be fitted in to the car with the vehicle's seat belt. It uses the same method as other infant carriers, with the lap belt over the child's legs and through the blue belt guides. Once tightened, the horizontal part of the belt has to be passed around the back of the seat and through the blue belt guide and tightened again. You will also need to pull out the side-impact protection panel from the side that is closest to the door. The same as when used on the base, the handle needs to be in the upright position and the seat up in the sitting position rather than being reclined. Being in the reclined position actually locks off the belt guides to make it more obvious that it can't be fitted this way.

The Cloud Z has lots of great features that make day to day life with a newborn easier! It can be used from birth up to 87cm, which is around 18 months depending on the child. Definitely the longest lasting infant carrier that we have come across!

cybex cloud z travel system

The Cybex Cloud Z has recently been awarded a Which? Best Buy Award. They rated it for having excellent overall crash protection, a spacious seat, practical features, is easy to install, is simple to use, has good instructions and clear warnings and is travel system compatible. It has also tested very well in the ADAC Car Seat Test with a Good (1.7) rating, where they found that there is a very low risk of injury in both side and head on collisions and it was easy to install and use.

cybex cloud z travel system

Getting in and out of the car with a tiny newborn or toddler can be tricky, especially if you have limited room in the car park. We love the fact that the Base Z has 180 degrees rotation! The Cloud Z is currently the only infant carrier that offers this swivel feature on a modular base. To spin the car seat, there is a grey and green button on either side to slide, you only need to use the buttons closest to you though. It's quick and easy to do and makes a big difference to getting your child in and out of the car. Thanks to clever technology in the base, the infant carrier can only be spun to face the door and back to rear-facing. This is called Driving Direction Control and prevents the misuse of the car seat, which can so often happen.

cybex cloud z travel system

Research has shown that newborn babies shouldn't be left in their car seat for longer than 30 minutes, due to the scrunched, upright position that they are kept in. This can cause increased heart and breathing rates and lowered blood oxygen levels. The Cloud Z helps babies and eases parent's worries by giving them the option of a lie-flat position when out of the car, so when you use it on your pushchair chassis as part of a travel system or while out and about. It's quick and easy to make this transition with the button on the back of the seat. It does need to be reverted back to the seated position in the car though and won't attach to the base or allow for seat belt fitting when reclined.

cybex cloud z travel system

As the Cloud Z is compatible with universal adaptors, it will fit on most pushchairs. Just make sure that you have the correct adaptors and check the pushchair or car seat compatibility list to see if it has been safety tested.

To help keep baby shaded in the car or when you are using it on your pushchair, it comes with a large hood that is independent of the handle. With a solid edge, it keeps a nice shape and can be pulled far over the child. The stretchy fabric offers good protection and is UPF 50+ rated.

cybex cloud z travel system

Inside the seat is a removable newborn inlay that has to be used until the baby is 60cm. It has more padding and so offers more protection to a small newborn baby.

A three point harness is used to secure the child in the seat. The harness is integrated with the headrest so can be adjusted in height with one movement. Just pull the ring at the back of the headrest and move up or down! Couldn't be easier to move through the 11 different positions.

cybex cloud z travel system

There is the option to add on a SensorSafe clip to the harness for an extra £50. This clever little clip just threads onto the harness and is designed to alert the parent to potential dangers to the child while they are travelling in their seat. The SensorSafe connects to your mobile phone with Bluetooth and will set off an alarm if the child unfastens their harness, takes their arms out of the straps, gets too hot or cold, is in the seat for too long, or is left unattended!

cybex cloud z travel system

When your child outgrows the Cloud Z infant carrier, you can continue to use the Base Z with the next stage car seat, the Cybex Sirona Z. This seat can be used from 45-105 cm, up to a maximum of 18kg - so around birth to 4 years old. We love that you can use the car seat rear-facing for the entire time that you use it. Alternatively, you can also forward face after 15 months. The Driving Direction Control is also used on this seat. It ensures that the forward-facing position is not used before the child is at least 16 months old and 76 cm tall by detecting when the harness is moved up into that position, before allowing it to rotate forwards. The base makes it really easy to use with the same swivel feature that you use with the Cloud Z. To make the child comfortable and to grow with them, it features a 12-step adjustable headrest and 5 reclining positions.

cybex cloud z travel system

As far as infant carriers go, the Cybex Cloud Z does it all, and more!

The fact that this is the only infant carrier that fits on a swivel base is also a massive plus and USP for it. Being able to swivel the seat to the car door makes it much easier to get baby in and out. You can then continue to use the base with your next stage car seat, the Sirona Z.

It looks great too - modern and an almost futuristic shape, but with comfort and safety for the child considered first.

Guide to Cybex Z range: Cloud Z2, Sirona Z2 and Base Z2

Choosing your baby’s first car seat can feel quite daunting. There’s so much information to take in and absorb and, because your little one’s safety is your number one priority, you want to feel confident you’re making the right choice.

In the following guide, we provide an overview of the Cybex Z Line Modular System, one of the safest choices for transporting your baby by car.

A system combining 1 base and 2 seats, Cloud Z allows you to use the same base from birth to approximately 4 years. Z has the highest safety ratings, excellent reviews, and is designed with unique smart technology while still being simple and easy to use.

Cybex Cloud Z2

The Cybex Cloud Z2 i-Size car seat comes under the new R129 i-size regulation meaning it follows the safest standard for new car seats. It has an optimised Linear Side-impact Protection (L.S.P) system, which significantly increases your child’s safety in a side-impact collision.

It’s designed for babies aged from birth to approximately 18 months or more specifically, a height of 45cm-87cm. It can hold a maximum weight of 13 kg.

What makes Cybex Cloud Z2 different?

One of the reasons Cloud Z is so popular is due to its unique ergonomic lie-flat position that can be used outside of the car. This allows you to lay your baby flat on a pushchair chassis without the need for a carrycot.   This can make life much easier and convenient when struggling for space in the car boot, or if you simply find yourself out for longer than expected without your carrycot.

The Cloud Z lets you effortlessly move your little one from car to pram chassis, keeping them comfortable and secure at all times.

Additionally, when the Cloud Z car seat is combined with the Cybex Z base, it can be rotated towards the car door for ease of fitting and securing your baby in the car.

The Cybex Cloud Z is available in 6 different seat fabric ranges:

  • Cybex Cloud Z
  • Cybex Cloud Z Plus
  • Cybex Cloud Z Sensorsafe
  • Cybex Cloud Z Plus Sensorsafe
  • Cybex Cloud Z Fashion collections
  • Cybex Cloud Z Designer Collections by Karolina Kurkova and Ferrari

Cybex Cloud Z2 additional features

  • XXL fold-away sun canopy with UPF50+
  • Adjustable headrest
  • Linear Side-Impact Protection
  • Sensorsafe Smart Technology (purchased separately unless stated otherwise)
  • Swivel Z Base (purchased separately)

You can check the Cloud Z compatibility with your car here .

Cybex Sirona Z2

Similarly to Cloud Z, the Cybex Sirona Z2 comes under the R129 i-Size regulation, so is also tested to the latest standards and features the Linear Side-impact Protection System.

It’s designed for babies from birth to approx 4 years or, more specifically, heights of 45cm-105cm and can take a maximum weight of 18 kg.

While the Cybex Sirona Z is suitable for use from birth it cannot be connected to any pushchair chassis, meaning it’s not suitable as a travel system. This removes the convenience of being able to transfer your baby from car to pushchair frame without waking or disturbing him.

However, the Sirona Z car seat does rotate, making it easier to place your baby in and out of the car while taking some strain from your back, especially as your little one transitions to the toddler years.

The Sirona Z is both rearward facing and forward facing but as it is an i-Size car seat, your baby must stay rearward facing until at least 15 months of age. It's also equipped with Driving Direction Control D.D.C, which prevents any misuse of the forward-facing position. In reality, this means it will not allow the seat to fully rotate forward until the harness is set to a minimum of 76cm (the approx height of a 15-month-old).

The Sirona Z cannot be used without a car seat base, unlike the Cloud Z car seat which can be fitted with a seat belt (although this means it’s not i-size compliant).

The Cybex Sirona Z is available in 5 different seat fabric ranges:

  • Cybex Sirona Z
  • Cybex Sirona Z Plus
  • Cybex Sirona Z Sensorsafe
  • Cybex Sirona Z Plus Sensorsafe
  • Cybex Sirona Z Designer Collections by Ferrari

Cybex Sirona Z additional features

  • Linear Side-impact Protection
  • Rear-facing car seat
  • Height adjustable headrest
  • One-hand recline and rotation function
  • Rotating seat

You can check the Cybex Sirona Z compatibility with your car here .

Cybex base Z2

The Cybex base Z2 is a reliable, secure car seat base for the new Z Line range.

It includes an innovative rotating function, not only for the second stage seat but for the infant carrier too. This is a huge breakthrough in the infant car seat industry, as it offers parents the best of both worlds. Being able to detach your baby’s seat combined with the convenience of a rotating base for easy installation in and out of the car is hugely beneficial and a key reason why Cloud Z car seat bases are so popular.

What makes the Cybex Z base even more appealing is it can be used until your child reaches 105cm tall, regardless of which way you use the seats.

SensorSafe is another car seat safety advancement from Cybex. It involves connecting to your smartphone and once set up can alert you to the following risks and dangers:

  • The car temperature being too high.
  • The harness being unbuckled
  • Your child left unattended.
  • Your child being seated for too long

Le Cybex Cloud Z i-Size can be installed using the vehicle safety belt or with one of the two bases compatible Base Z or the Base Z One. To fit into any vehicle, the Cybex Cloud Z i-Size can be used without a base. In this case, it is simply attached using the 3-point seat belt of the vehicle. The various belt guides located on the sides and rear of the seat make installing the cosy quick and easy. Don't forget that the car seat cannot be used with a 2-point safety belt or a lap belt.

Belt guides for the Cybex Cloud Z i-Size cosy

Installing the seat on one of the two Cybex bases provides additional security, notably by limiting the number of risk of incorrect installation. Once the base has been securely positioned using the isofix fixing system The Cloud Z i-Size simply clips onto the base and removes at the touch of a button in just a few seconds. This way, there's no need to fasten the seat with a safety belt every time you want to use it in the car.

Installing the Cybex Cloud Z i-Size with the Z base

Looks great – despite the in-your-face colour. It’s well made and the movements of the handle and sunshade are smooth and sleek. I’m impressed.

Do you need to buy a base to use the Cybex Cloud Z?

You don’t have to buy the base – the Cloud Z can be installed using your car’s seatbelt, but this then means it’s no longer classified as i-Size (as i-Size requires ISOFIX fitting). However, you still get the additional side-impact protection and the car seat still exceeds current safety requirements. If you’re set on using an ISOFIX base, then it’s reassuring to know that the Cloud Z can still be used safely in an alternative car, such as grandparents’, without needing to use the base.

Fellow reviewer Christy says, “We found it really easy to install when we borrowed my father-in-law’s VW Golf, which doesn’t have ISOFIX. You just feed the 3-point belt around the seat, making sure it hooks into certain points, and clip the belt in as usual. However, it’s not as convenient as using the base.”

The compatible base is the Cybex Base Z, a rotating base that has an RRP of £184.95. It’s another big cost but is part of what Cybex call its Z-line modular system – which means it can be used with the next stage up Cybex car seat – the Sirona Z i-Size (birth to approx 4 years). This means, if you stay with Cybex car seats, you can use 1 base from newborn to 4 years – and the £184.95 starts to look like good value.

How is the Cybex Cloud Z i-Size car seat different to the Cloud Q?

The Cloud Z i-Size differs from the popular Cybex Cloud Q in that it is i-Size compatible when used with the base. i-Size regulations require a higher level of side-impact protection and the Cloud Z features what Cybex calls Linear Side-impact Protection (LSP). The Cloud Z is also 15% lighter than the Cloud Q. Given that the two car seats boast a similar price tag I’d personally choose the Cloud Z i-Size.

What age is the car seat suitable for?

The Cloud Z i-Size is suitable from birth to 13kg. Interestingly, Cybex states 13kg is equivalent to around 18 months, whereas most manufacturers (and MadeForMums) use the more common comparison of 12-15 months. My son is 17 months but not yet 13kg, so a great test of Cybex’s claim of 18 months. While at the end of Cybex’s suggested age range, the rear-facing seat is a little snug but does fit him.

Reviewer Christy tested the seat with her son from birth. She says, “It’s a great seat for newborns, with thick padding, a newborn insert and the option to make it flatter outside the car so there’s less worry about keeping them in it for too long. I felt really confident bringing our son home from hospital in the Cloud and his frequent naps suggest he finds it comfy.”

How do you install the Cybex Cloud Z i-Size car seat in the car?

The car seat can be belted into the car quite easily or you can use it with the Cybex Base Z to install it with ISOFIX fixings (which you need in order to fully comply with i-Size standards). In common with 80% of parents we surveyed*, I found the seat straightforward to install. For added reassurance, there’s a noise sensor to alert you if the base isn’t sitting correctly.

I would definitely choose to use the car seat with the ISOFIX base rather than belt. It feels more secure, and is quick and easy – much less faffing around when you’re running late and trying to get the family into the car!

Mum of 3 Christy agrees, adding, “Once we’ve got the older children strapped in, it’s so nice to be able to quickly click my newborn’s Cloud seat into the base. It’s always a rush to get going before he starts crying as the car motion sends him off to sleep, so speed is the name of the game!

“If he is fussing and I’m stressed, the base is so easy and clear to use that I don’t worry about whether I’ve installed the seat correctly the way I might using the seatbelt method.”

How do you install the Base Z?

Follow Cybex’s instructions and checks, which include useful online videos, but in a nutshell:

  • Slide each of the base’s 2 ISOFIX prongs into the corresponding ISOFIX plugs in the car
  • Extend the Base Z leg so it’s touching the floor of the car’s footwell
  • To make the process easier, you can use the plastic ISOFIX guides included with the seat, which help open up the gap between the car seat cushions so you can find the plugs more easily
  • Check relevant ‘traffic light’ at the front of the base is green

How easy is it to use the base with the seat?

Christy, who tested it with her newborn baby, says, “I hadn’t used a base before and it was a real eye-opener, making the seat much nicer to use. I did find it a bit fiddly to slot the seat into place at first, but it got easier with practice.

“And removing the seat from the base is really easy. If you want, you can rotate it round towards you – there’s a button on either side of the rotating plate and you only need to press one of them in order to unlock it. Then to unlock the seat, simply raise the button at the front of the base and lift the Cloud Z out.”

cybex cloud z travel system

How useful did you find the Sensorsafe with the Cloud Z?

Christy says, “I don’t think my son would have the dexterity to unbuckle the clip before he outgrows the seat, although I can see it would be a handy feature on Cybex’s seats for toddlers and older children.

“As a parent with a newborn baby, the temperature gauge and 2-hour warning were of most interest.

“Once set up, the app is pretty simple to follow. You have to keep the app open throughout your journey, and the homepage confirms the clip is buckled, and tells you the ambient temperature around your baby (with green colouring and the word ‘optimal’ when it’s in a safe range of 8-34 degrees).

“Travelling in July, it said the car interior was around 32-34 degrees on most journeys, which surprised me because it certainly didn’t feel that warm and we had the air conditioning on. When my baby’s legs felt cool at one point I put a blanket over him, and around 15 minutes later a red alert flashed up to say the temperature around him was too hot. His legs did feel a bit warm, so I removed the blanket and the app confirmed the temperature dropped to a safer level. I check him regularly anyway, but it was helpful here.”

Decided to go camping again with my daughter, my husband, Ali. Took on a great adventure trip to Cloudland Canyon State Park in northwestern Georgia. Brings back memories of cooking meals out over campfires, setting up campsites, and especially sweating out more than enough perspiration. Last night we roasted hot dogs over burning embers and made s’mores. Today planning on going to Rock Coty again in Chattanooga and then white water rafting on the Ocoee River. Here are some initials videos and photos.

I rode Moscow's metro for a day, and it blew New York's subway system away

The Moscow Metro is a delightful paradox; how is one of the largest metro systems in the world also one of the most efficient?

Moskovsky Metropoliten opened in 1935, offering one train line and 13 stations. By 2017, the system ballooned to 229 stations connected by 14 lines. Today there are 215 miles of track, making it the fifth-largest metro system in the world.

It continues to be developed aggressively. In September 2016, the metro opened a new line called the Central Circle. It traces a ring around the historical center of the city, connecting with every other line. They are on track to add nearly 100 new miles of track and 75 new stations by 2020.

There’s even free wi-fi for every passenger.

We took a ride around the Moscow Metro to show how it leaves other mass transit systems in the dust.

The first leg of our journey took us from Zhulebino in the southeast to the nearly-central Park Kultury. We made one transfer, passing through 14 stations in total. It took about 40 minutes.

cybex cloud z travel system

We started at Zhulebino Station, deep in the suburbs of Moscow. Note the distinctive red “M” logo, which you'll be seeing more of.

cybex cloud z travel system

There were automated machines for buying a metro ticket just around the corner, but human attendants also work at every station. Their help is surely needed: daily metro ridership in Moscow averages just under 7 million people, occasionally peaking at more than 9 million.

cybex cloud z travel system

One-way tickets cost 55 rubles and round-trip tickets are 110 (that’s $0.94 USD and $1.88 USD respectively). Rides are discounted to 35 rubles each ($0.60 USD) if you buy a reusable metro card like this one.

cybex cloud z travel system

The trains run approximately every three minutes, so we never waited too long. On the busier lines, trains will arrive every 40 seconds.

cybex cloud z travel system

The scene on board was one of conventional urban commuting. Passengers read, talked, or browsed the internet using the free wi-fi available on every train car.

cybex cloud z travel system

A lit-up display listed station names and kept us updated on our progress toward our intermediary destination: Kuznetsky Most, where we would make our transfer to Lubyanka Station.

cybex cloud z travel system

Some Russian subway ads are unusual. For example, this creepy clown logo is an advertisement for an opera performance called “Game.”

cybex cloud z travel system

We arrived at Kuznetsky Most after 20 minutes, and then it was time to make our transfer to the red line.

cybex cloud z travel system

Signage embedded in the floor made transferring pretty easy. We just had to keep pace with the rest of the hurried commuters.

cybex cloud z travel system

Moscow’s metro system is not only one of the largest in the world, but also one of the deepest. Large, looming escalators like these are a daily sight for Russian commuters entering, exiting, or transferring stations. Stay to the right if you want to ride it patiently, stay to the left if you’re climbing the stairs.

cybex cloud z travel system

Then we waited for the train that carried us to Park Kultury, completing this leg of the trip. Naturally, the train arrived after just a couple minutes.

cybex cloud z travel system

We arrived, dashed up the stairs, and turned just in time to take this picture of the train leaving Park Kultury. The red LED clocks displayed two times: the current time, and the total elapsed time since the last train left the station.

cybex cloud z travel system

“Vykhod v gorod” means “exit to the city,” an important Russian phrase for every metro rider to know.

cybex cloud z travel system

There has been a subtle push in recent years to make the Moscow metro system more accessible to those who don’t understand Russian. They’ve added automated station announcements in English, for example, and some metro maps display station names in Latin characters instead of Cyrillic to help tourists approximate the sounds.

Here’s what our next metro trip looked like. We were headed to a lunch meeting near Mayakovskaya Station, widely reputed as one of the most beautiful stations in the system.

cybex cloud z travel system

Back to Park Kultury, where we rode an escalator deep underground. There’s our familiar red M.

cybex cloud z travel system

A few stops and one transfer later, we arrived at the stunning Mayakovskaya Station. How many metro stations do you know that have marble floors and ornamental light fixtures?

cybex cloud z travel system

We would have admired the scenery for longer, but we were running late and lunch was calling.

cybex cloud z travel system

Then we headed to Kievskaya Station on Novy Arbat Street, something like Moscow’s Broadway.

cybex cloud z travel system

We weren’t in a big rush at this point, so we were free to admire some of the artwork on display in the stations.

cybex cloud z travel system

There were sculptures, paintings, and other artwork on display in most stations. The Moscow Metro is not only efficient and reliable, but it’s also uniquely decorated.

cybex cloud z travel system

Then it was time for dinner. We decided on some buffalo wings on Novy Arbat.

cybex cloud z travel system

Predictably, we needed to take another huge escalator to get to street level.

cybex cloud z travel system

Bellies full of wings, we headed back to the same station with our dining companion, Sasha. Putting the final punctuation on this train-centric day, Sasha refilled his metro card with the station attendant.

cybex cloud z travel system

New York’s MTA executives could learn a few things from this metro system. There are never service changes or delays, your non-rush-hour rides are quite comfortable, and there’s beautiful, free internet for everyone with a connected device. Even when they’re traveling hundreds of feet underground, the Russians are doing it in style.

Wheelchair Travel

Moscow Public Transportation

The public transportation system in Moscow is moderately accessible, much to the surprise of many. Use of this transportation network will require some planning for disabled travelers, especially those in wheelchairs. An ability to understand and recognize the Cyrillic alphabet will also make its use much easier for travelers of all abilities. The city’s subway system is not accessible to wheelchairs. The vast majority of city buses and trolley buses offer step-free access.

Metro Subway

The Moscow Metro Subway is spread across 12 lines and serves 196 stations throughout the city. While some stations have recently had elevators installed, the system cannot be considered wheelchair accessible. Large gaps of up to 6 inches exist between the subway train and station platforms. Trains are often not level with the platform and require a step up of a similar distance.

Stations without elevators require travelers to ascend or descend long flights of stairs. I strongly recommend that you use the accessible city bus network and avoid the subway.

City Bus and Trolleybus System

Moscow is served by an increasingly modern city bus system with hundreds of routes/lines. Every major city street is served by at least one bus line. Busses are numbered and lettered with route information. The network consists of normal, gas-powered city buses and the largest electricity-powered trolleybus system in the world.

The majority of city buses and trolleybuses now have lowered floors and are wheelchair accessible. The door at the center of the bus is equipped with a manual ramp which the bus operator will extend for wheelchair users. These ramps can be quite steep, but the bus operator can assist with pushing the wheelchair up the ramp. Wheelchair accessible buses are equipped with a securement space for wheelchairs with tie downs/straps and a seatbelt. Priority reserved seating is available for seniors and persons with disabilities.

All wheelchair accessible buses are marked with the international symbol of access (the wheelchair icon) at the center door or on the front of the vehicle. Wheelchair entry is possible only through the center door, where the retractable or fold out ramp is located. Wheelchair travelers ride the city bus and trolleybus free of charge. You should flag down the approaching bus if wish to ride, so that the operator can maneuver the bus close to the curb for ramp deployment.

On-street rail trams

The City of Moscow is served by 44 on street tram lines, which run on recessed rails and are powered by electricity. All trams require riders to climb several steps in order to access the passenger cabin. There are no implements which make wheelchair access possible. Disabled travelers should plan to avoid any routes which require the use of a tram. City buses adequately serve all parts of the city in which the trams operate.

City Sightseeing Moscow Hop-on/off Tour Bus

Although it is not managed by the city, the City Sightseeing Moscow tour bus travels to all of the major sights in Moscow and allows patrons to hop-on and hop-off at nearly 40 stops. The bus stops at or near all of the sights I have reviewed on this website. The next bus is available 30-40 minutes after the one before and the entire route circle takes 60 minutes to complete. Buses are wheelchair accessible, with fold-out ramps at the rear doors. One dedicated wheelchair space is available on each bus.

Passengers are provided with a set of headphones which can be plugged in to the at-seat ports. An audio guide is available in multiple languages, including English. Tickets for adults, good for 24 hours from the time of purchase, are available for 700 RUB. They can be purchased online with credit card, or onboard the bus with cash.  Tickets are provided free of charge to wheelchair users and for other persons with proof of disability. Discounts are also available to seniors with identification. For additional information on the Moscow City Sightseeing Bus or to download route maps, visit  city-sightseeing.com .

Moscow street navigation system

Overview   Process

By the request of the Committee for Architecture and Urban Planning of Moscow and the Main Architectural and Planning Office of Moscomarchitecture recommendations on improvement of city street navigation were developed at the studio. The recommendations are assembled into a guide book and cover typefaces, colors, pictograms and layout principles for house number and street name plates.

Pedestrian zone plates

Pedestrian zones in Moscow are small streets with narrow sidewalks and facade buildings many of which are listed. These streets are used by residents for leisure and are included in many walking and tourist guides, making aesthetics of house plates especially important.

moscow pedestrian navigation granatniy

The plates are typeset conforming to the technical documentation approved by the Moscow authorities and based on available manufacturing capabilities. Different formats are available for use with long and short names of city toponyms.

Typefaces: Staromoskovsky and Direct-Mos

Plates for the whole city

The second, simpler, design of the plates is made to be installed throughout the entire city with the exception for pedestrian zones.

Two sizes of plates are available—small and large. In each individual case the choice is made according to the number of characters in the name of the street.

For residential areas where houses are not placed along a street and are separated by considerable distances, vertical combination plates were developed with large and highly visible house numbers.

moscow pedestrian navigation napolniy

For reasons of economy it is acceptable to produce plates that combine the street name and the house number.

moscow pedestrian navigation strastnoy

An original typeface, Staromoskovsky, was created for use on the plates. The face is designed in the spirit of traditional Moscow street name plates.

Street signs

Street signs indicate the location of important city objects, organizations and landmarks. They are made in the form of either free-standing structures or panel brackets for mounting on lighting and utility poles. The signs contain the name of the object in two languages, its pictogram, address and walking time in minutes. To simplify typesetting and make comprehension of long official names of state organizations easier, universal rules for their abbreviation were created. All texts on the signs are typed with the Direct-Mos typeface—a modified version of the Direct typeface created specifically for navigation.

moscow pedestrian navigation sign objects

Besides the traditional blue background of the signs, a new brown one was proposed to visually separate cultural objects. Pictograms are used as a secondary navigation element. They convey the message even to those who do not know the language, as well as improve legibility of information from a distance, in bad weather conditions, in low light and so on, as their optical density is higher than that of text.

The whole system of city street navigation is based on strict and coherent graphic principles. Some elements are common for all media: color scheme, typefaces and pictograms, positions of direction arrows. Unified layout allows to easily identify signs as elements of the navigation system and provide for their comfortable use, reducing the time needed to understand the logic behind the system.
