Live Review: Dead Kennedys set Southampton sizzling at the 1865

dead kennedys tour 2022 review

California's original Punk rebels kicked off their 2023 UK tour on the South Coast at the sweatiest gig I've been to for a long time..

The enduring popularity of Dead Kennedys was evident at a jam-packed 1865 in sunny Southampton last Friday, where the band played the first date of their current UK tour, named the “ DH Power Tour ” in tribute to their late drummer DH Peligro – this being their first set of performances since DH’s untimely passing.

Glasgow’s Pïss Bäth were up first in the support slot. Very much a Hardcore Punk band, their set took no prisoners! The four lads played a loud showcase of their own material, plus a cover of ZZ Top ‘s Sharp Dressed Man, as the place got warmer and warmer. The singer jettisoned his T-shirt (was it the heat or to show off his tattoos?), the drummer (who very much reminded me of a younger Jet Black from The Stranglers ) pounded his kit like he was bashing rivets into a ship, while the guitarist ripped out some complex and surprisingly melodic riffs. The band have released their material online or on cassette only,  a different way to get their music out there ..

Piss Bath

Before officially starting their set, East Bay Ray , Ron “Skip” Greer and  Klaus Flouride came out onstage to give a heartfelt tribute to their late drummer, DH Peligro , who sadly passed away last autumn, after a fall likely caused by a drugs overdose. Speaking with Skip after the show, he revealed that DH had been suffering badly from cancer, latterly becoming more unwell, so although DH tragically went before his time it was unlikely he’d have survived to play another round of shows.  “ We’re doing this for you, our brother “, said Skip before they exited to prepare for their opening number.

DH Peligro

Having never been to a DKs gig before, I wasn’t sure how crazy it would get.. fortunately I was with 3 pals (thank you Andrew, Jim and George!) so I was hoping I would be ok.. We were stood opposite East Bay Ray which was perfect – we were just outside of the main mosh pit, and I got to witness those amazing, classic DK guitar riffs! Ray is a unique player, seeing his style up close was a special experience.

DKs East Bay Ray

The band haven’t shaken up their set list for a while, so there was nothing new for those who had seen them before, but as DKs hadn’t played in the UK since August 2019, few were complaining! All of the fan favourites were included; Police Truck , Let’s Lynch the Landlord , Kill The Poor , Too Drunk to Fuck and main set closer California Über Alles . The crowd really did go wild – fortunately I only got jabbed hard in the kidney once (why do people ram their elbows into others?) after which it was just the usual jumping and pushing.

DKs Klaus Flouride

Skip provocatively brought up the subject of the King’s Cornonation, to which the audience reponse was a hail of hearty boos! Even more provocatively he said something about football – “ Which I know as soccer ..” followed shortly thereafter by a fight in the crowd – somebody said something about somebody else’s team apparently.. Security were on it, and those involved all went back to moshing soon afterwards! Skip also took the time to douse us liberally with water from the water bottles on stage – perhaps we did all look in need of cooling down. It didn’t help me though, my glasses don’t come with windscreen wipers, and I didn’t have a single item of clothing to wipe them that wasn’t sweat-soaked! (possibly TMI).

DKs Skip Greer

Tour drummer Santi Guardiola was very impressive – a powerful young man from Argentina who has previously played in many bands, including Peligro , Thorne , Phenagen and Black Oil . A natural choice, being a friend and drummer for DH Peligro’s band Peligro, and also the DK drum tech since 2011, Santi did DH proud with an excellent performance, driving the songs at full speed – “ He’s forced East Bay Ray to speed up! ” grinned Skip during our chat later.

DKs Santi Guardiola

After not one, but two encores, including Holiday in Cambodia with plenty of audience participation, the band came down to shake hands, thank the gig-goers, and in Skip’s case pose for selfies and speak at length with fans. He comes across as genuinely appreciative of the audience, and also very grateful to be playing these shows. This was unexpected and refreshing in a world were bands often disappear after the gig and refuse to engage with the public at all! Good man!

Review: Dead Kennedys complete their European tour in Birmingham

  • Dead Kennedys completed their European tour at the O2 Academy on June 26th
  • Support was provided by Otherkin
  • Old songs sit comfortably alongside brand new covers and fresh takes on fan favourites

Since they reuniting back in 2001, Dead Kennedys have toured the world delivering razor sharp performances of old favourites in sweaty rooms where leather clad survivors of the 1980s hardcore scene rub shoulders with curious young punks.

dead kennedys tour 2022 review

The tour itself, however, is not without controversy, and notable by his absence is original vocalist Jello Biafra, who has repeatedly poured scorn on the notion of a full reunion, satirizing their current incarnation with his 2005 collaboration with Melvins, ‘Those Dumb Punk Kids Will Buy Anything’. During their performance the group elegantly sidestep potential disappointment, or comparisons with their younger selves, by simply not allowing the audience time to dwell on any of this.

dead kennedys tour 2022 review

Current vocalist Ron “Skip” Greer seems to delight in the role of pantomime villain and spends lengthy parts of the set riling the crowd with extended monologues, taking in topics ranging from the current state of the American economy to local football club West Bromwich Albion.

dead kennedys tour 2022 review

Despite the furious protestations of a hand full of grumbling older punks, these offer a fitting backdrop for a furiously aggressive set which sits old classics such as, ‘Too Drunk to Fuck’ and ‘Holiday in Cambodia’, alongside surf rock covers of Taylor Swifts ‘Shake it Off’ and Elvis Presley’s ‘Viva Las Vegas’.

dead kennedys tour 2022 review

Perhaps the most interesting thing about these rants is that they also afford the group an opportunity to update some of their older hits for a younger audience. In particular a riotous version of ‘MTV Get Off the Air’ is re-branded ‘MP3 Get Off The Net’, in a bid to lampoon a generation of online bloggers.

dead kennedys tour 2022 review

The group power through another furious 25 minutes, twisting, yelping and clambering in an out of the audience, before leaving as quickly as they arrived.

dead kennedys tour 2022 review

Support was provided by Dublin four piece Otherkin , who worked hard to energize a crowd who, for the most part, are still finding their way into the venue towards the later part of the set. Shirtless and sweating, front-man Luke Reilly prowls the stage throughout their set, leaping from the drum riser and spitting brattish, sneering lyrics against a backdrop of pounding rhythm guitar. A set highlight comes in the form of ‘She’s a Boy’, which built around Luddite drum patterns and school yard chanting, invokes the spirit of the Ramones.

The Razor's Edge

Live Review: Dead Kennedys – Manchester

dead kennedys tour 2022 review

Live Review: Dead Kennedys - Academy 2, Manchester 10th May 2023 Support: Piss Bath Words: Dan Barnes Photos: Rich Price Photography

Described by Stephen Blush in his seminal work on the subject as being the band who “set the ground rules for everything Hardcore since Day One.” (115); Dead Kennedys might be forty-five years into their illustrious career, but their potent messages of non-conformity and rebellion still rings as true today as they did back when they were written.

We had Black Flag in town at the end of January and tonight, Dead Kennedys have all-but sold out the Academy 2, the demographic being a fairly even split between those too young to have been alive when Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables kicked its way into the public consciousness back in 1980, to those old enough to have been profoundly affected by the band’s world view.

Before the show begins, Ray, Skip and Klaus walk to the centre of the stage and pay their tribute to DH Peligro following the drummer’s death last year. It’s a sombre moment that couldn’t have fit within the body of tonight’s performance due to the general melee and irreverence inherent in the band’s shows.

Ecstasy of Gold acts as the intro-tape and the band return, this time like sugared-up toddlers, full of insane energy that surely belies the advanced years of the members. Forward to Death, Winnebago Warrior and Police Beat open the set, with the latter built around a Sixties-era Californian surf vibe; it also sees the first of (ironically) many crowd surfers going over the top tonight, with the perpetually in motion pit spitting up body after body throughout the show.

Buzzbomb and Let’s Lynch the Landlord confirm that Skip’s fifteen year tenure at Dead Kennedys microphone means he’s not phased by the size of the shoes he’s filling; the bouncing floor of the Academy 2 suggests Landlord’s unbelievably catchy hook will be lodged in the mind all the way home.

For the intro to Jock-O-Rama, the only visit to Frankenchrist tonight, Skip goes into a series of deliberately contentious comments about Monarchy, Politics and Brexit but agrees the one thing everyone can be on the same page with is football. I mean, in Manchester, I ask you!

The Swiftian satire of Kill the Poor has almost every voice in the room at full volume, MP3 Get Off the Web is a savage rejection of modern technology and Too Drunk to Fuck sees Skip dad dancing worse than Jobo from Skids.

It’s heartening to see the torch being passed to a new generation of Punks who have turned out en masse to enjoy the show. Pink Mohawk has been going strong since support act, Piss Bath, came on and looks to be ready to carry on all night – oh, to be young again!

The post punk vibes of Moon Over Marin is at odds with their cover of Napalm Death’s Nazi Punks Fuck Off and the surf vibes return for California Über Alles, including an audience participation section which brings the set to a close.

Dead Kennedys return for an encore of Bleed for Me, Elvis’ Viva Las Vegas, with Skip adorning it neck towel to honour the King (I mean Elvis, rather than Charles) and Holiday in Cambodia before leaving the stage. A second encore of Chemical Warfare is packed full of snotty punk attitude, yet also featuring a fragment of Synyrd’s Sweet Home Alabama, sending us out into the May Manchester evening sure that we have just seen something a bit special.

There would always be a few bumps in the road of any band with as many years under their belts as Dead Kennedys, but the legacy of some of the Eighties most caustic anthems of protest shouldn’t sit on shelves gathering dust; they need to be out there and played live, reminding us why we loved them in the first place and educating the next generation as to the power of music.
