Slang dictionary

What does  drip mean.

Leaks drip , yes, but when you’ve got the drip or are dripping , it means in slang that your look or style is extremely fashionable or sexy.

Related words

Where does drip come from.

drip or trip

If you have the drip , it means you have swagger , especially in how you look. You’re hot. You’re cool. You’re on point . You’ve got the sauce. You’re, you know, [insert “awesome” slang term here].

Drip appears to be a metaphor: You’re dripping with money, designer clothes, or confidence. Or as Bruno Mars sang on his January 2018 “Finesse (Remix)” with Cardi B: “We out here drippin’ in finesse / It don’t make no sense.”

Its origin is disputed, including among rappers. The hip-hop blog  HipHopDX claims that the word originates in the 2000s Atlanta rap scene while a 2018  Urban Dictionary entry argues it comes from early 2010s Jersey City, New Jersey slang. However, it might also be a teen TV show from the late 2000s, Zoey 101 , that introduced  dripping as slang for “cool.”

Ima say this one time only ! I Don’t Give a Flying Fucc about The Word DRIP ! Or Who ever say Dey created it ! BuT I make HITS and i really put dat Shit On 🤷🏾‍♂️ No Capp ! — Yung Gunna (@1GunnaGunna) October 21, 2018

The drip was popularized by the rapper who herself we’ve already seen  dripping : Cardi B. Her 2018 hit “Drip” drips with rapper bravado: “Came through drippin’ (drip drip) / Diamonds on my wrist, they drippin’ (ice) .”

Examples of drip

Who uses drip.

Thanks to Cardi B, drip often appears in the phrase  come through dripping , e.g., I came through drippin’ tonight with my red bottoms.

This phrase is a favorite of people posting outfit pics on Instagram and Twitter when they feel especially have the drip or are dripping in designer goods.

Take a good guess at which Nigerian President was standing next to Jimmy Carter in this picture. Meanwhile this was taken in October,1977 inside the White House. Before I forget, peep the dripping Yoruba swag while rocking the black leather shoes. The starch on the Agbada 👌🏾 pic.twitter.com/gLoG7Rgty8 — Kennedy™ (@Ken_3dy) October 17, 2018

Drip  is especially applied to people’s outfits, if you didn’t catch that. You wouldn’t really say you that an event was so  drip . Better to use another slang word, like  lit , for those situations.

Don’t get too caught up in yourself, though, or you’ll be called out for being arrogant —for stunting , or “showing off.”  It’s a fine line between having the  drip and flexin’ too   drip .

y’all really don’t be dripping like y’all think y’all r :/ — KT ❁❥ (@Notorious___FIG) October 18, 2018

Postnasal Drip: Causes and How to Get Relief

Drainage of Mucus Down the Back of Your Throat

  • When to See a Provider

Postnasal drip occurs when  mucus  in your nose drains down the back of your throat. This may happen because your body produces more mucus than it needs or is not able to clear it as quickly as usual.

Mucus itself isn't harmful and actually protects you from illness and provides lubrication. That said, postnasal drip can be bothersome if it causes itchiness or a tickle in your throat, a cough, frequent throat clearing, or hoarseness.

Postnasal drip may be temporary—for example, it often will clear up after an infection passes. It can also become chronic, such as if you have allergies or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Treatment for postnasal drip can help with symptoms as well as addressing the underlying cause.

This article explains the symptoms and causes of postnasal drip, as well as how it's diagnosed and treated.

Postnasal Drip Symptoms

The symptoms of postnasal drip are generally mild and include:

  • A burning feeling in your throat
  • Losing your voice
  • Persistent cough (postnasal drip is also known as upper airway cough syndrome)
  • Scratchy, tickling, or itching in the back of your throat
  • Sore throat
  • The sensation of a lump in the back of your throat
  • Throat clearing
  • Watery eyes

These symptoms can get better or worse throughout the day. For example, you may feel worse after lying down for a while or after talking for a long time.

Postnasal drip generally lasts for a few days or weeks, depending on the cause. If it becomes chronic, you may have it for months.

Postnasal drip is not dangerous. However, some activities—like skiing or scuba diving, which require wearing a mask—can be uncomfortable if you have postnasal drip.

When to See a Healthcare Provider

If you have postnasal drip a few times per year and it gets better on its own, you probably don’t need to worry about it.

However, if you have postnasal drip often or for more than a few weeks, you should talk to your healthcare provider. You should also call your provider if you have postnasal drip in conjunction with:

  • Difficulty swallowing , trouble breathing, or a choking feeling
  • Moderate to heavy blood in your nasal secretions
  • Dyspnea (shortness of breath)
  • Foul-smelling mucus
  • Fever, vomiting, or ear pain (signs of an infection that needs medical treatment)

What Causes Postnasal Drip?

The cause of postnasal drip can be categorized as short-term conditions, sudden triggers, or longer-lasting (chronic) issues.

Temporary Conditions

Some temporary conditions that can cause postnasal drip include:

  • Infections like sinusitis , the common cold , influenza, cytomegalovirus (CMV) , respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) , adenovirus , and strep throat
  • Seasonal allergies
  • Pregnancy-induced rhinitis
  • Hormone fluctuations

Sudden Triggers

Sudden triggers that can cause postnasal drip include:

  • Eating spicy foods
  • Eating dairy products
  • Exercise-induced rhinitis
  • A foreign object stuck in the nose
  • Pet allergies

Chronic Conditions

Chronic causes of postnasal drip include:

  • GERD, or chronic acid reflux
  • Allergies to mold, dust, or dander
  • Anatomical abnormalities such as a deviated septum or enlarged turbinates
  • Medications such as birth control and drugs to lower blood pressure
  • Rebound congestion due to overuse of pseudoephedrine nasal sprays
  • Swallowing problems

Postnasal drip is usually diagnosed based on your symptoms and a physical exam. If your provider is unsure of the diagnosis, they may want you to have allergy testing, imaging, or other tests to look for a cause.

Physical Examination

If you have a fever, your postnasal drip could be caused by an infection. Your provider will look in the back of your throat to see if there is any redness or swelling and ask if you have any other signs of infection (such as headaches, fever, chills, and muscle aches).

If your phlegm is tinged with blood, it could be a sign of a more serious infection. For example, your provider may need to do other tests to look for problems in your lungs.

Allergy Testing

If your postnasal drip symptoms tend to come back every few days or weeks and get better between episodes, then you could be having an allergic reaction or sensitivity to something in your environment (e.g., pollen, food).

Your provider may want you to keep a diary of your symptoms and note what you ate and what you were doing before your symptoms happened. (For example, were you gardening outside or playing with your pets?)  Allergy testing  can also help pinpoint postnasal drip triggers.

If you have postnasal drip most of the time, it could be from an anatomical cause, such as a deviated septum.

You will need a physical exam and imaging tests to look for any shape or size variations in parts of your body (like your nose) that could be causing your symptoms.

Interventional Tests

If your provider thinks you have something like GERD, you might need special tests such as:

  • Direct laryngoscopy to look at your upper throat with a scope
  • 24-hour pH probe to test for acid reflux
  • Esophagogastroduodenoscopy to check the lining of your esophagus, stomach, and small intestine

How to Stop Postnasal Drip

There are several strategies for  treating postnasal drip . If it’s mild and you don’t have it all the time, you can probably manage postnasal drip symptoms at home. If it’s more of a constant or severe problem, you might need medication or surgery to fix the cause of postnasal drip.

Home Remedies

There are some general lifestyle tips you can try that may make it easier to deal with postnasal drip, no matter what’s causing it.

  • Drink plenty of water to lubricate your throat and keep your mucus thin (and less bothersome).
  • Use a cool-mist humidifier at night while you sleep.
  • Try rinsing your nasal passageways with a neti pot .
  • Use a vaporizer or diffuser with essential oils, such as peppermint or eucalyptus.

What About Chicken Soup?

In one often-cited study, classic chicken soup lowered white blood cells ( neutrophils ) in the upper airways of people with colds, which seemed to help with symptoms. Experts say that any hot liquid (not just soup) can thin mucus and may help with postnasal drip.

Over-the-Counter Treatments

If you also have symptoms like congestion, sore throat, and cough along with postnasal drip, you can try some over-the-counter (OTC) treatments including:

  • Tylenol (acetaminophen) or cough lozenges for sore throat
  • Claritin ( loratadine ) and Benadryl ( diphenhydramine ), antihistamines that can ease allergy symptoms
  • Sudafed ( pseudoephedrine ) for congestion
  • Medicated nasal spray, such as Afrin (oxymetazoline) , to make breathing more comfortable
  • Mucinex ( guaifenesin ) to loosen up mucus
  • Saline nasal spray to clear blocked nasal passages
  • Vapor rubs to help you breathe easier
  • Nasal irrigation (with a neti pot or another method)

Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist before using any new treatments or medications, even those you get OTC. You should not use decongestants for more than three days in a row.

Prescription Medications

There are also prescription medications that can be used to treat postnasal drip or the underlying cause of it.

For persistent postnasal drip or postnasal drip that’s complicated by asthma, a provider may prescribe a medication called Atrovent (ipratropium bromide) or a steroid. If you have a bacterial or fungal respiratory infection, you may need antibiotics or antifungals to treat it.

GERD needs a treatment strategy that includes medications and lifestyle changes, such as avoiding fatty and spicy foods, taking acid-reducing medications, and sleeping with your head slightly elevated.

It's a big leap from occasional postnasal drip to surgery, but if your symptoms are hard to treat or the cause is anatomical (e.g., the structure of your sinuses), it could be fixed with a procedure.

Surgeries that may be done for various causes of postnasal drip include:

  • Sinus surgery
  • Submucosal resection of the septum
  • Septoplasty
  • Turbinate reduction

Many people have postnasal drip from time to time and it's usually nothing to worry about. The symptoms, like an itchy throat, coughing, hoarseness, and watery eyes, can be irritating but are usually not serious.

Postnasal drip usually goes away on its own. If it doesn’t, or the symptoms get worse, see your provider to find out what’s causing it. In some cases, treating postnasal drip comes down to avoiding triggers, making lifestyle changes, or treating an underlying condition. If you have postnasal drip because of a structural problem, you might need surgery to fix it.

Hello everyone, Would it be possible to use the preposition in after the noun trip instead of to ? In that case, is there any difference in meaning? Example: - a) The had organized a trip in [region/state/defined area/city - e.g. Normandy, California, the Alps, Berlin ] - b) They were on a trip in [region/state/defined area/city] Thank you .

"in" and "to" in a sentence about trips have slightly different meanings. They had organized a trip in Normandy. This sounds like they are already in Normandy, traveling around and seeing things. They had organized a trip to Normandy. This sounds like they are still back at home, waiting for the trip to start. But really, the difference is not very big, and everyone would understand you whichever word you used.

sdgraham

If you are trying to emphasize that they visited several places in that location I would use "around". They organized a trip around Normandy.

How airline "drip pricing" can disguise the true cost of flying

By Megan Cerullo

Edited By Alain Sherter

Updated on: April 24, 2024 / 2:47 PM EDT / CBS News

With many airlines now hawking "unbundled" fares, it's easy for travelers to mistake low advertised prices for cheap plane tickets . But for consumers eager to get the best deal on flights heading into the summer travel season, it pays to learn how "drip pricing" can make airfare more expensive.

Indeed, selecting the cheapest base fare is no longer the best way to get a good deal, according to travel experts. That's because airlines now routinely charge more money for "extras" such as seat assignments,  checked bags , snacks or wifi.

"Nobody likes feeling nickel-and-dimed, like the price they saw for a flight was a bait and switch," Scott Keyes, founder and CEO of travel site Going.com, told CBS MoneyWatch.

Here's what to consider. At first glance, the initial pricing for a flight you find on an online travel site might seem temptingly low. But after factoring in the cost of selecting your seat, checking bags and other add-ons, the fare can end up being much higher — as much or more than an all-inclusive fare.

This model, commonly referred to as drip pricing, can certainly boost an airline's revenue, and proponents say it benefits consumers by allowing them to pay only for the perks they truly value. For their part, critics say it makes it harder to determine the true cost of flying and to compare prices among airlines.

Keyes traces drip pricing back to 2008, when airlines began charging passengers to check second bags. That allowed full-service carriers to offer a lower-cost, no-frills ticket in order to compete with budget carriers.

"That lower headline price brought people in — then they started adding seat-selection fees," Keyes said. "It's an innovation from the budget airlines that the entire industry has copied and that full-service airlines have adopted for themselves."

"It makes it very difficult"

For consumers, however, the problem with unbundling fares is it makes it trickier to compare what different airlines charge for tickets, experts told CBS MoneyWatch.

"It makes it very difficult to find out what the all-in price will be," said Columbia Business School marketing professor Vicki Morwitz, who authored a  report on how consumers react to drip pricing.

Her research shows that consumers tend to book the ticket option that looks cheaper upfront, but costs more once add-ons are factored in.  "Consumers make a mistake and spend more money than they needed to spend," she explained.

Jay Sorensen, president of IdeaWorks, a consultancy that has advised U.S. airlines, agrees that drip pricing makes comparing airline ticket prices more complicated. But he still thinks it can benefit consumers by letting them pay for the extras they want, while leaving behind those that aren't important to them.

"The outcome is of course that it's more difficult to compare between different products and airlines," he said. "While that's true, airlines, as profit-seeking companies, are under no obligation to make it easier to compare with their competitors."

Sorensen compared the experience of booking airfare today to shopping for groceries.

"You roll in with your shopping cart, and as you walk through the aisles you toss stuff in your cart," he said. "You buy a base fare, and as you go through the booking path you add things to the cart, like a checked bag, seat assignment, or pay to book a meal or other services," he said. "That's dramatically different from the way travel was once sold in U.S."

  • 1.2 Engine Overheating

  • 1.3.3 Fix Mixed Liquids

Common issues [ ]

Car maintenance [ ].

The absolute bare essentials a car needs to work is a motor , multiple wheels , some fuel and gas to function.

Fuel, whether gas or diesel, is obtainable in gas canisters and must be poured into the fuel inlet located on the side of the car. Oil is pre-included in the engine and can be refilled by accessing a lid situated on the engine itself. However, players must ensure they use the correct type of fuel.

Engine Overheating [ ]

The heat gauge

The heat gauge

To prevent the engine from overheating, a radiator is essential. Radiators utilize water to cool the engine, so it's crucial to only fill them with water. Additionally, the radiator should be installed in the front of the car, behind the grill.

Liquid Depletion or Mishandling, Repairs [ ]

FuelGauge

The fuel gauge

If your car unexpectedly stops functioning without any visible damage, it's important to check the fuel tank. Here are some potential issues that could arise:

  • Using the wrong type of fuel: Please read the engine table to find the correct fuel type for your engine.
  • Mixed fuel: An engine will only accept its designated type of fuel. If there is any other liquid besides the correct fuel type in the fuel tank, the engine will not function.
  • No fuel left: You'll need to refill the gas tank as the fuel has run out.

Check the engine; it might have run out of oil. If you run out of oil, you won't be able to drive until you refill the oil reservoir. The oil reservoir is located on top of the engine itself. Oil, like other liquids, can be found in various structures.

Fix Mixed Liquids [ ]

If you fill your car with a gas canister filled with multiple liquids, the car won't run. Here is how you fix this:

  • Mixed liquids in the fuel tank: Remove BOTH wheels on the side of the fuel inlet. Then open the lid. The liquid should start to pour out. Close the lid once all unwanted liquid is poured out and put on the tyres.
  • In engine or radiator: Take it, and turn it upside down. Then open the lid and the contents should pour out. Make sure to close the lid in time to not lose precious oil or water.
  • In canisters: See engine/radiator instructions.
  • Going too fast with any vehicle is something you never want to do, running into even the smallest rock at high speeds will detach everything on your car (including parts).
  • Water in the Radiator is not a necessity to make the car work, but it's recommended to not overheat the engine which will make the car turn off.
  • The van is faster than the car (at least top-speed wise). It's recommended that they drive the van, as it has more storage and more capacity.
