A complete guide to Hatta: What to do, where to stay and how to get there

From adventures in the mountains to beekeeping farms, here's everything you need to know before visiting.

Hatta has come a long way since Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, announced plans to transform the town into a major tourism destination in 2021.

An inland beach, lake and cable-driven mountain railway are coming, while an aerial adventure park opened in September. The Hollywood-style Hatta marker broke the Guinness World Record for the tallest landmark sign that same month.

The mountainous Dubai town is also an ideal camping site as the UAE welcomes its cooler months .

Hatta is an exclave of the emirate that sits on the border with Oman, and benefits from some fantastic natural scenery and a more laid-back pace of life than the UAE's big cities.

Less than a two-hour drive from Dubai, it’s a good pick for a weekend escape and close enough for a mini-daycation. In winter, Hatta is the go-to spot for hiking, biking, kayaking and adventure, while in summer it's worth a visit for its cooler climes.

And with several new projects in the pipeline, now is the time to go before Hatta becomes a bucket-list destination.

The Hatta Beach Project will create new investment opportunities for the region's private sector.

The Hatta Beach Project will create new investment opportunities for the region's private sector.

If you're planning a trip out east, here's everything you need to know before you go – from where to stay and what to do when you're there, to where to go for the best local food in town.

Is Hatta in Dubai?

Hatta's Hollywood-style sign that is visible from afar

Hatta is part of the Dubai emirate, but it is not located within the city’s main boundaries. Instead, it lies about 130 kilometres south-east of the city, high in the Hajar Mountains.

Formerly part of Oman, the town was given to Dubai around 1850 when the Omanis realised that they were no longer able to defend it against Buraimi tribes. These days, it's a popular spot for families living in Dubai to escape to in the summer thanks to its cooler temperatures. The town retains much of its Omani laid-back pace of life.

How to get there

Getting to Hatta involves a journey of about 90 minutes by car from Dubai and the Sharjah-Kalba route is typically the fastest. From Abu Dhabi, you're looking at a two-and-a-half-hour road trip.

If you’re coming by public transport, you'll need to get to Al Sabkha Bus Station in Dubai where you can hop on the E16 bus. The bus takes a little more than two hours to reach Hatta.

What's the weather like?

Because of its location in the mountains, Hatta’s climate is a few degrees cooler than central Dubai thanks to its higher altitude. While this doesn't make too much of a difference in summer, you will feel it's a little less humid.

In winter, it helps to remember that there's a temperature difference, especially if you're staying in one of the mountaintop locations where the evenings can feel quite cold – so don't forget to pack a sweater.

What to see and do in Hatta

While there's plenty to see and do in Hatta year-round, keep in mind that it's a seasonal destination where things often close or scale back in the summer months. Hatta Wadi Hub and all related activities tend to close from May each year, and reopen in October.

Hike through Hatta Mountain Conservation Area

Hatta Mountain Conservation area is a trekking spot with views of the Hatta Lake

Dubai's only mountain refuge for endangered animals and plants, this region has the largest population of the endangered Arabian tahr in the country. It's also a great hiking spot. Trek through the foothills of the mountains, climbing over rugged terrain. Stop to take a few pictures at Hatta Lake – a striking blue sheet of water amid the sandy-coloured surroundings. As you hike, keep an eye out for the elusive Arabian sand cat. Security clearance from the municipality is required to enter the reserve but the areas around the dams are open to the public.

Even better, you can bring your pup along on the kayak with you. Check ahead if it's open or not, as the activity is seasonal.

Visit Hatta Heritage Village

The Hatta Heritage Village is popular with tourists who want to see the not too distant past of life in the Emirates. This restored traditional village is one of the oldest in the country, dating back to about the third century BC. Carefully reconstructed stone houses and water wells sit among two watchtowers, a traditional majlis and a fort. There’s also a nice collection of old photographs detailing traditional life in Hatta, a basket-weaving area and a museum space showcasing old tools and weapons. The Al Sharia palm tree farm next door has a great example of the ancient falaj irrigation system.

Find some vintage music

Vintage cassettes on sale in Hatta

Interestingly, Hatta seems to have a thriving vintage CD and cassette business. There’s more than a handful of tiny music stores in the town, all with faded window posters that are packed floor to ceiling with eclectic music collections. Try Audio Records next to Jabal Hatta Hypermarket if you want to pick up some traditional Khaleeji tunes or fancy giving lesser-known Omani artists a whirl. If you look hard enough, you’ll also find English offerings, typically sold without a track-list which makes for very interesting road trip tune-age.

Hatta Hypermarket

Jabal Hatta Hypermarket has an eclectic collection of things for sale including giant pool floats and souvenirs

Are you a bargain hunter? If so, you'll love the random finds available in Jabal Hatta Hypermarket on the Dubai-Hatta Road. Stocking everything from toys, clothes, kitchen equipment, luggage, sweets, groceries, beauty products and more, it's also got some Hatta souvenirs. Not worth a visit on its own, but definitely worth stopping by for any last-minute staycation snacks or purchases such as board games and colourful pool floats from Dh20.

See the world's largest inclined mural

The Hatta Mural depicts the UAE's founding fathers

Perhaps the last thing you might expect to see in the middle of the Hatta mountains is some street art. But you can picnic under the world's largest inclined mural, which is a portrait of the founding fathers of the UAE. Located near Hatta Dam, guests staying in the Sedr Trailers Resort will pass the painting on their way to camp. Part of Dubai's Street Art Project, the mammoth image portrays Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum.

There's plenty of space for children to run and play, plus running tracks and sports fields. At the highest point of the mountain park is a tower, which offers great vantage points of the surrounding Hajar Mountain range and the village.

When is the best time to visit Hatta?

While Hatta does benefit from slightly cooler temperatures than Dubai thanks to its location in the Hajar mountains, it's still best to wait for the winter months to safely make the most of its outdoor offering. In fact, many of its attractions close over the summer, with the season usually beginning around mid-September. However, we'd suggest waiting until at least October for the best of the weather. The peak season runs until April, with attractions usually closing for the season around mid-May.

Travelling to Hatta

The easiest way to get to Hatta is to drive. The scenic Sharjah-Kalba route, via the E102 highway, is the quickest option, taking around 90 minutes from Downtown Dubai. While there are some stations en route, it's best to fill up with petrol (and snacks) in the city before heading on your way.

If you don't have a car though, there are still several options for getting to Hatta. An express bus route runs between 7am and 7pm each day, connecting Dubai Mall Bus Station to Hatta Bus Station. The service operates at two hour intervals, and costs $6.80. From Hatta bus station, you can jump on the Hatta Hop on Hop off, which runs every 30 minutes, and passes by Hatta Wadi Hub, Hatta Hill Park, Hatta Dam and the Heritage Village.

If you a fuss-free option, you can grab a taxi, which will cost around $80 one way. Taxis can be hailed at the roadside or booked via the Careem app from Dubai.

Elsewhere, Hatta Dome Park is a novel option, offering a luxury glamping experience close to one of Hatta's main attractions, Hatta Wadi Hub. The clear-fronted domes offer incredible mountain views, and each comes with an attached terrace and camping chairs. Inside, domes have comfortable double beds, air conditioning and wooden floors, as well as wifi, a mini-bar fridge, television and private barbecue area.

On Hatta's hillside, you'll find Damani Lodges Resort, which consists of 20 stilted huts, each of which has its own private deck. Inside, you'll find comfortable beds and bathrooms, as well as Wi-Fi and a television, although you'll likely be too busy stargazing to make use of it. Sedr Trailers , Hatta's third glamping option, differs from your average trailer park. The site features thirteen repurposed Airstream trailers, located on the banks of Hatta Dam. The trailers are only reachable by 4x4, which Sedr Trailers staff operate. The sleek silver trailers come with a lantern-lit covered terrace and days beds, while inside, there's a compact dining and kitchen area, and comfortable bed. Guests will also have access to a communal barbecue area and on-site food trucks.

The Hatta mountains are also home to several mountain bike trails. Again, the trails are well sign posted, and bikes can be rented on site.

Ariel Adventure Park

New for this season at Hatta Wadi Hub is the Ariel Adventure Park. Spread over 39 platforms, the new attraction offers a high ropes course, as well as a giant swing and free fall, 45 degree zip line and a leap of faith.

Hatta Dam

Another of the area's main draw is Hatta Dam, with its piercing blue waters and surrounding terracotta peaks. Initially built to service the area's water and electricity needs, the dam is now a hive of activity, including kayaking, paddleboarding and canoeing. Boats and equipment are available to rent from the dam's banks, and pets are also welcome – so long as they don a life jacket. If you're an early riser, it's worth waking up to see the sunrise over the dam – it's a spectacular sight.

Hatta Fort

Constructed in 1896, Hatta Fort is a great place to get acquainted with the area's history. The fort is an important landmark, as it served as a defence frontier and residence in the past. The building and its 11-metre-high watch tower were restored in 1995 using century-old mountain stone and mud-brick construction techniques. The fort is a short walk from the Al Shari’a site, a palm oasis that still uses the traditional falaj watering system.

Where to eat in Hatta

While many people who visit bring their own picnic or barbecue supplies, there are several places to eat in Hatta. If you're glamping, food trucks such as Sedr Bites , Taste of Hatta and Damani Bites offer light snacks and sandwiches which can be delivered straight to your hut or trailer. Al Hajarain , located at Hatta Heritage Village, serves Emirati cuisine made with ingredients farmed in the area. Traditional restaurant Tanor Lahm is famous for its slow-cooked lamb, prepared for hours in a traditional underground oven, while Hatta Wild Cafe , located at Hatta Wadi Hub, sells caffeine and snacks to fuel you before setting off into the wild.

Hatta (Dubai): Best Things to Do and Travel Tips (2023)

Hatta is a scenic village located in a remote mountainous area of the UAE, right on the border with Oman. It is an exclave of the Emirate of Dubai and one of the most popular summer destinations for locals who are drawn here by the less sultry climate and the many options for outdoor activities.

One of Hatta’s main attractions is Hatta Dam Lake , a stunning mountain lake with emerald green waters, which is one of the most popular kayaking and hiking destinations. The fascinating surrounding mountainous landscape is the ideal destination for wadi bashing, hiking and biking.

Hatta is also one of the most popular border crossings between the UAE and Oman , making it a very interesting stop for those traveling through the two countries.

What you will find in this guide to visiting Hatta:

Hatta: Things to Know Before You Go

Best things to do in hatta, best hatta’s hotels, camping and resorts, best restaurants in hatta, how to get to hatta.

Hatta is one of the most scenic places in the UAE : located on the border with Oman and nestled in the rugged Hajar Mountains , Hatta is a village rich in history, legends and traditions, but above all it is a great destination for outdoor activities.

Hatta’s sheikhdom is undoubtedly one of the most remote and authentic places in the United Arab Emirates, and its geography is quite curious. Hatta is in fact an exclave of the Emirate of Dubai , surrounded by the border with Oman to the east and the south, by the Ajman’s exclave of Masfout to the west (with the nearby exclave of Sayh Mudayrah , also belonging to the Emirate of Ajman ), and from a dozen villages belonging to the Emirate of Ras al-Khaimah to the north. This makes Hatta a perfect example of the complex political geography of the UAE.

Hatta is located about 130 km from Dubai , about 2 hours driving. Its atmosphere of an old frontier village and the beautiful surrounding mountainous landscape make it the ideal destination to enjoy a break from the hustle and bustle of Dubai. Hatta is in fact a quiet village with a relaxed atmosphere, which is why many locals come here on weekends to spend free time with their families.

Situated between the beautiful Hajar Mountains , which dominate the Emirate of Ras al-Khaimah and northern Oman, Hatta offers hundreds of kilometers of hiking trails and is a very popular destination for hiking and cycling enthusiasts.

Hatta Kayak Dubai UAE

Once Hatta was a territory of Oman , its ownership was transferred to the Emirate of Dubai at the end of the 19th century, when the Sultan of Oman realized the impossibility of defending the village from the other local tribes who were settling in the area.

Even today in Hatta it is possible to see some towers and fortresses dating back to the end of the 19th century, as well as the ancient Juma Mosque , dating back to 1760. In the surroundings, the remains of the traditional water supply system (falaj) are still visible, but what makes World famous Hatta is the Hatta Dam : a hydroelectric power station built in the early 1990s. Its emerald-green lake is one of Hatta’s main attractions.

The Hatta Dam could become one of the most powerful hydroelectric plants in the Middle East in the coming years and expansion works are underway.

Hatta appears to travelers as a fabulous oasis in the desert: the Hatta Springs form the stunning lake of the Hatta Dam, a popular destination for kayaking. Nearby there is the scenic Hatta Green Lake , a beautiful emerald lake surrounded by mountains, and the so-called wadis, a sort of canyon that depending on the season can be flooded or dry, popular destinations for 4WD trips, so-called wadi bashing.

Being in the mountains, Hatta also has a much more pleasant climate than the coast, making it a popular summer destination where locals and expats take refuge in its beautiful resorts , glamping sites and hotels to escape the Dubai summer heat.

Explore the Old Village of Hatta

Despite being part of the Emirate of Dubai, Hatta seems a long way from the modernity and glitz of the north coast cities. The village has maintained its old charm over time, here you can visit old artisan shops and traditional farms.

The artisans of Hatta still produce jewelry and artifacts in copper, leather and clay. In the surroundings of the village you will still be able to see traces of traditional agriculture, in particular here the cultivation of date palms is quite famous. Dates are used as food, while wood and fibers are used as building materials and for making carpets and handicrafts.

Hatta Dam & Hatta Kayak

A short distance from the village is the beautiful Hatta Dam Lake , with its scenic emerald waters. While it looks like a fabulous mountain lake, it is a man-made lake, built in the early 1990s to improve the region’s water supply and produce green energy.

The Hatta Dam Lake is one of the most famous attractions in the region: you can admire it from the different viewpoints, some reachable directly by car. In fact, right near the Hatta Dam there is a large free parking ( GPS: 24.78377, 56.11435 ) and from here you can walk to the dam to have a beautiful view of the lake.

Hiking trails also start near the Hatta Dam, allowing you to have a better view of the lake and the dramatic surrounding mountainous landscape.

The most popular thing to do at Hatta Dam is kayaking and boating on the calm waters of the lake. In Hatta there are several agencies that rent kayaks and boats, although in the peak periods (in the summer and in the months between November and February) it is best to book online. Even the best hotels and campgrounds in Hatta offer hiking and kayaking packages.

Hatta Kayak Dubai UAE

Hatta Wadi Hub

Hatta Wadi Hub is the place to be for outdoor enthusiasts. It is the main tourist center of Hatta: it is here that most of the excursions and outdoor activities start. There are playgrounds and attractions for kids, but also lots of things to do for adults.

Also in the surrounding area are some of Hatta’s best glamping sites , such as the Hatta Damani Lodges Resort , which offers excellent accommodation in rooms, tents, lodges and caravans, with great views and a nice atmosphere.

Not far away is the fabulous Hatta Sedr Trailers Resort which offers very original American-style caravan accommodation. It is a beautiful luxury glamping equipped with every comfort and located in a decidedly scenic valley.

In the surroundings of the Hatta Wabi Hub there are over 50 km of cycle paths of varying difficulty, from those for beginners to the more challenging ones. You can rent mountain bikes from the shops at Hatta Wabi Hub, which can also provide you with more information on the trails. A map of Hatta’s bike shops and trails is available here .

Horseback riding is another popular activity in Hatta. Hatta Fort Horses is a famous riding school and offers the chance to ride one of their beautiful Arabian horses.

The bravest will be able to experience the thrill of parachuting: the mountains around Hatta are famous destinations for paragliding and parachuting . These activities are also organized by Hatta Wabi Hub’s shops and nearby hotels, campsites and resorts.

The most popular activity, besides kayaking of course, is hiking: around Hatta there are 5 official hiking trails , with a total length of over 30 km. The trails allow you to explore the surrounding mountains and enjoy beautiful views of the desolate mountainous landscape and Hatta Lakes. You can find a map of the trails here .

Hatta Heritage Village

The Hatta Heritage Village , located in the heart of the town, is one of the most interesting attractions in the region: an authentic Arab village dating back to the 3rd century BC, carefully restored and open to visitors. This is the ideal place to find out more about the local history and culture.

The Hatta Heritage Village is made up of over 300 traditional buildings , stone houses, huts and old fortresses that look like sand castles. You will be able to see the two watchtowers dating back to the end of the 19th century, some wells and the traditional water supply systems.

Visiting the Hatta Heritage Village you will be able to discover many interesting things about local customs, through photographic exhibitions and displays of weapons and artifacts. You will also be able to see some traditional shops and the Bait Al Wali , the former local ruler’s house.

One of the most interesting things to see in Hatta are the remains of the ancient Falaj water supply systems, which over the centuries have allowed locals to live here and farm the arid lands of the region. The water is transported here from the surrounding mountains, through channels and tunnels that are several kilometers long.

Hatta Fortress Tower UAE

Hatta Fortress

The Hatta Fortress dates back to 1896 and is one of the most important in the region, built to defend these important trading outposts and oases from enemy attacks.

The fortress is characterized by two 11-meter-high watchtowers , whose peculiarity is that once they were accessible only from an opening located about 3 meters high, so the guards had to use ropes to enter them which were then retracted.

Hatta Honey

Hatta is also famous for its delicious honey. Here, in fact, there is the Hatta Honeybee Garden , a center that combines the production of honey, in its hives, using organic and traditional methods, with the education of visitors on pollinators and beekeeping.

Hatta Honey is a high quality product, 100% natural and unfiltered. It is sold in the shop located in the Honeybee Garden (open every day) in different sizes and packs.

The most interesting thing, however, is the guided tour, called the Bee World Discovery Package , which allows you to discover many interesting things about honey production, beekeeping techniques and pollinators. The tour includes watching some videos and a tour of the Honeybee Garden, where you can see the beehives and learn more about beekeeping techniques.

Hatta 360 Observatory

One of Hatta’s watchtowers now houses the Hatta 360 Observatory , a vantage point that allows you to have a nice view of the village and surrounding mountains.

The government of Dubai’s has big plans for Hatta, in fact an impressive visitor center is being built around the village and the lake, with a cable car that will take you to the top of the mountain where an amazing observation deck will be built and which should be called Dubai Mountain Peak .

JA Hatta Fort Hotel

The JA Hatta Fort Hotel is located in a quiet and scenic area just outside the center of Hatta , surrounded by a wonderful garden and a beautiful mountainous landscape. It offers excellent accommodation overlooking the Hajar Mountains , in spacious, modern rooms equipped with every amenity. The rooms have beautiful terraces and guests have free access to the 2 swimming pools, the beautiful spa and the sports center where you can practice tennis, golf, archery and much more. The hotel restaurant , serving international cuisine, is also very good. The JA Hatta Fort Hotel is conveniently located just along the road from Dubai to Hatta.

Hatta Damani Lodges Resort

Located in the middle of a scenic mountainous landscape, a few kilometers from the center of Hatta and right next to the famous Hatta Wadi Hub , the Hatta Damani Lodges Resort offers beautiful accommodation in rooms equipped with every comfort. The glamping-style accommodations (luxury camping) are also very beautiful, such as those in tents (including the transparent domes to see the starry sky of the desert). Hatta Damani Lodges Resort also organizes excursions in and around Hatta.

Hatta Sedr Trailers Resort

Located near Hatta Dam Lake , the Hatta Sedr Trailers Resort offers fabulous old-fashioned caravan accommodation set amidst a stunning mountainous landscape. You will have a beautiful view of the lake and you will be able to enjoy a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere . The accommodations are equipped with every comfort, including a nice terrace, private bathroom and barbecue.

Among the best places to eat in Hatta , besides the JA Hatta Fort Hotel’s restaurant which serves excellent international cuisine, is the Al Hajarian Restaurant located in the Hatta Heritage Village serving traditional Emirati specialties.

The Tanoor Restaurant is also very good, serving excellent local specialties in an informal setting. Try the meat specialties, such as lamb. Another good place to eat is Bab Alsham Restaurant , which serves good and inexpensive Syrian and Lebanese specialties such as hummus, falafel and mixed salads.

Hatta is well connected with Dubai : it’s just 1.5 – 2 hours of driving along very scenic roads that cross the desert passing by the wonderful red dunes of Lahbab and Al Badayer . The shortest route would be the one that goes straight from Al Madam to Masfut and Hatta through the territory of Oman, but the border is only open to citizens of the UAE and Oman (and may sometimes be closed).

For this the best solution is to take the E44 which goes towards the outskirts of Dubai , from there take the E611 (Emirates Road) and then the E102 Sharjah-Kalba Road . The E102 is a freeway that will take you directly to Hatta, which you will reach with a short detour.

Otherwise you could take the scenic E44 (Dubai-Hatta Rd) and then continue on the new E66 .

The E102 passes through the Sharjah Desert and near the village of Maleha , while the E44 passes through the Dubai Desert , near Lahbab and Al Badayer . The roads are in excellent condition.

Set amidst the backdrop of the spectacular Hajar mountains on the border of Oman, is the heritage village of Hatta in Dubai. Hatta is a popular destination with locals and expatriates, with its astounding dams, water activities and extreme sports on offer. It’s also the perfect weekend destination to escape the freneticism of the city, with a plethora of quaint accommodation options available. These include sprawling resorts, boutique hotels, private personal lodges, airstream trailers, panoramic dome glamping tents, regular camping sites and luxury mansions to name a few! Most of these facilities are dotted around Hatta with picturesque views of the mountains and nearby oasis.

hatta oman tourist places

The crown jewel of Hatta is its magnificent dam, which drives tourism by way of picnics, hiking, photography and water sports such as kayaking. Due to its raised altitude compared to Dubai city, Hatta’s cooler mountainous climate brings in many people wishing to escape the heat in the summer months.

As a special extra to this itinerary, don’t miss out on the Al Hefaiyah Conservation Centre, where you’ll have the rare opportunity to spot an endangered Arabian leopard!

Where is Hatta?

The extraordinary thing about the UAE is that its 7 emirates have boundaries that extend far beyond many would expect. This is the case with Hatta. It is located about 70-90 minute drive from Dubai International Airport in a small exclave of Dubai Emirate, in a pocket at the northern tip of the main body of Oman. This dates back to 1971 when the boundaries of the UAE emirates were being drawn up.

If you’re a tourist, the best way to reach Hatta is by private vehicle. Any of the three international airports have car hire options and this is essential for a pleasant stay within Hatta. There is so much to see and do and no reliable public transport in this tiny town so you’ll maximise your options if you have your own wheels. The exception to this may be if you taxi to one of the hotels which has shuttles to the activities hubs, however even these shuttles are not reliably operational. You’ll effectively be confined to your accommodation and there’s no guarantee you’ll find a taxi back to the airport. Advice: hire a car!

Where should I stay?

As mentioned there are a multitude of accommodation options to suit both individuals, couples, families and friends. I’d highly recommend checking the official website for a comprehensive overview of these.

For this reason, we chose the JA Hatta Fort Hotel , which had extensive facilities and attractions, including a kids pool, an adults only pool and a daily evening movie played outdoors on the big screen! The rooms were incredibly spacious, with a private terrace overlooking the mountains and famous ‘Hatta’ sign and an extensive buffet breakfast spread each morning.

Paddle boat on Swan Lake

Hatta is well known for its many lakes and first on our itinerary was a drive to the serene Swan Lake. It’s not huge but it is home to a huge flock of ducks. Perched between the mountains and Hatta town, it comes alive in the evening with Swan-shaped paddle boats that can be hired for a fee, as well as food trucks to feed visitors.

Walk around Hatta Heritage Village

Next up is a trip to Hatta Heritage Village, a renovated 3000 year old traditional mountain village. Designed to give visitors an insight into ancient Emirati life, this near-perfect condition restoration showcases a cluster of farms chiselled by a freshwater anal, quaint shops selling customary collections and an archaeological cemetery.

hatta oman tourist places

All structures are built with mud, fronds, palm tree trunks, stone and reed, mirroring original designs. The Hatta Heritage Village of Dubai is located inside a historic fort. Keep a look out for artefacts on local music, weaponry, palm-tree products, weaving, traditional dress, handicrafts and old society!

Climb the South Tower, Hatta Heritage Village

After wandering around the Heritage Village, continue up the path to climb the South Tower of the Hatta fortress. From here you’ll have 360 degree views of Hatta, including the stunning mountains and oasis.

hatta oman tourist places

Climb the North Tower

Across the road from the Heritage Village, is a narrow unsigned pathway that leads upwards to the North Tower of the ancient fortress. A simple 5 – 10 minute hike will see you reach the top and it’s worth it for the rustic untouched feel that is different to the restored and cultivated South Tower.

hatta oman tourist places

Rehydrate at Al Hajarain rest area

Adjacent the Heritage Village is a small rest area called Al Hajarain, kindly maintained by the Al Hajarain restaurant. This is an open, air conditioned and carpeted rest area, where thirsty guests can rehydrate with bottled water within a cool space. You can’t beat Middle Eastern hospitality and this was a well received find, after walking around in the April midday heat.

Visit Green Lake (Al Ghabra Dam)

Sadly the Green Lake was closed during our trip to Hatta. It will be closed for the foreseeable future due to site construction and maintenance.

Enjoy the vista at Hatta Dam

Hatta Dam is the undeniable icon of this town and is famed for its glorious turquoise waters, stunning vistas from a height and the surrounding mountains that create a natural amphitheatre around it. You’ll need to drive up a steep road to reach the summit of the dam. Visitors can then traverse the dam structure to a small parking area where it’s possible to get out and take a few snaps.

hatta oman tourist places

The Dam has a huge mural of past Emirati leaders painted upon it, which is unmissable from the main parking area below. This depicts the UAE’s founding fathers, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum.

There is no better way to experience the scenic views than from the water so plan some time to hire a kayak, canoe or paddle boat!

Sign up for adventure and activities at Hatta Wadi Hub

Hatta Wadi Hub is the centre of all exteme (and less extreme) activities in the region. It’s virtually impossible to list them all but includes ziplining, zorbing, hiking, mountain biking, wall climbing, archery, axe throwing, the ‘big plunge’, tube sliding, an inflatable maze, rovers, e-bikes, a splash mountain and ATVs! There is honestly something for all ages, sizes and interests!

hatta oman tourist places

The Wadi Hub looks like something out of an American Western ranch, with rusted cars sawn in half and perched in the nearby desert and an information centre and restaurants with an old era facade. Surrounding the info centre are many of the activities, as well as the Damani accommodation lodges behind it.

hatta oman tourist places

Drive to Suhail Lake & see oryx at the Hatta Mountain Conservation Area

A short (unpaved) drive from the Hatta Wadi Hub is Suhail Lake and the Hatta Mountain Conservation Area. This is home to a fenced area of oryx, an Arabian antelope that is the national animal of the UAE. We found this road to be slightly hazardous so did not continue on to the pen of oryx. Fortunately we have seen them on previous trips however, for first time guests it may be worthwhile enquiring as to the best access route to see them.

Relax at JA Hatta Fort Hotel & Resort Pool

As mentioned, we had a delightful stay at the JA Hatta Fort Hotel & Resort Pool! For locals with the Entertainer app, you can also find 2 nights for 1 deals periodically which makes the stay even more cost effective. Having visited in April with the summer sun looming, we were thanking our lucky stars to have some relaxation time by the adults pool. Situated on a terrace overlooking Hatta, you’ll feel enveloped by the mountains and palm trees which wrap around the pool from afar. A team of hotel staff provide impeccable service and are quick to offer a list of welcomed drinks and cocktails poolside.

hatta oman tourist places

Climb the JA Hatta Fort Hotel mountain for sundowners

Another excellent feature to the JA Hatta Fort Hotel is its extensive grounds and curated gardens. Our villa overlooked a small hill which garnered our curiosity and we decided to climb up one evening for the sunset. It’s possible to take drinks up here and so we enjoyed a few Coronas with fresh lime at the top! The trek is not cumbersome and takes approximately 10-15 minutes. Along the way are various levelled areas with seating and tables for visitors to take rest.

hatta oman tourist places

The piece de resistance however, is at the top of the hill. With 360 degree panoramic views around Hatta, we felt completely secluded and separate from the rest of the town and spent a couple of hours sinking into the seats and watching the sun change colours on its descent below the horizon.

Hatta has a Hollywood-style capitalised sign on one of its hills which can be captured perfectly from this spot.

hatta oman tourist places

Enjoy local cuisine at Jeema Restaurant

One of the frequently recommended restaurants on website reviews is Jeema Restaurant, at JA Hatta Fort Hotel. We visited during the month of Ramadan and opted for their buffet Iftar meal but were also given the option to purchase a la carte. On the menu was seafood, slow cooked lamb, Arabic rice, mezze plate options, a variety of salads and a comprehensive dessert selection. The wine menu was also comprehensive.

hatta oman tourist places

Complete the evening at JA Hatta Fort Hotel rooftop bar

The evening was complete with a few nightcaps at the sizeable Roumoul rooftop bar , with views over the front entrance garden and fountain. Indoor seating is also available for the scorching summer days. There are limited places to buy alcohol in Hatta and its hotels (even at night) but JA Hatta Hotel is one of them.

Hatta Honey Bee Discovery Centre

This important centre is the first specialised garden in the Middle East and North Africa that offers tours, workshops, and hands-on projects to help visitors discover the amazing world of honey bees. With an area of 16,000 square metres, the bee sanctuary contains 300 of the 4,000 beehives that are owned by Hatta Honey all over the UAE. Tours are interactive and informative and the kids will love it! It is also home to hundreds of indigenous and exotic trees, such as Samar, Ghaf, and Sidr.

Visit the Al Hefaiyah Conservation Centre

For those with a little more time, just an hour’s drive from Hatta is this gem of a reserve we found near Kalba, Sharjah Emirate! Spread over 12 square kilometres is this park that is home to over 30 native mountain and desert species. It has remarkable air conditioned indoor exhibits which host snakes, lizards, hedgehogs and scorpions, as well as larger enclosures for the Arabian wolf, tahr, caracal, desert lynx, striped hyena and dassie.

hatta oman tourist places

Visitors are in for a real treat because the Al Hefaiyah Conservation Centre also houses one of the critically endangered Arabian leopards, so rare that less than 250 remain in the wild today.

hatta oman tourist places

Guests can meander through the indoor exhibits at their own pace and are then shown around in a private golf buggy to see the same animals from an outdoor vantage point. The centre is dedicated to conservation and community education, in order to protect the delicate landscape and its vulnerable wildlife for future generations.

How to Get to Hatta From Dubai

Hatta is the ideal destination for renting a car in Dubai and self-driving .

If travelling from the city of Dubai, you need to take the Sharjah-Kalba route and follow the signs to Hatta. The route is approximately 90 minutes long.

If travelling from Abu Dhabi, you need to take the same route, and it may take you at least 2.5 hours to complete the journey.

There is also the option to use public transport to reach Hatta. A new service has been launched by the RTA, the H02 Hatta Express , which starts at Dubai Mall Station and goes directly to Hatta Bus Station.

  • The route is operated by deluxe coaches with bathrooms onboard, aircon and wifi
  • The route operates from 7:00 AM to 7:00 Pm ith buses every 2 hours
  • The journey costs AED 25 per person one-way

We believe this has replaced the previous E16 route which used to operate from Al Sabkha Bus Station in Deira and make multiple stops.

The sun catching the mountains and water of Hatta Dubai UAE

The number of tourists visiting Hatta has increased considerably in the past few years, and plans for new developmental projects in Hatta are underway.

In a few year’s time, you can expect to find here:

  • A 504m-long cable car which will pass over the Hatta Dam Lake.
  • The ‘ Hatta Sustainable waterfalls ’ project, which will use the slope of the upper dam to create a natural waterfall. All the water used in the waterfall will be collected at the end of the stream, recycled and pumped back to the top of the dam.
  • The ‘ Dubai Mountain Peak ’ at Jebel Umm Al Nisour, the highest natural summit in Dubai, 1,300 metres above sea level.
  •  The construction of hiking trails to Jebel Umm Al Nisour.
  • Hotels with cave-like interiors featuring rocky walls and views of the Hatta lake and mountain range.

Hatta was host to the country’s 50th National Day celebrations in December 2021.

Yes, Hatta is in the emirate of Dubai, though you do drive through parts of Sharjah emirate to get there as it’s an enclave. There are no formal borders to cross, though; you get there by private car in under 2 hours from most parts of Dubai City.

Yes, like most of the country, Hatta experiences the extreme heat of summer. HOWEVER, it can be significantly cooler in the winter. You will find it’s always a few degrees cooler than the coastal cities throughout the year.

As soon as you’re away from the beaches in Dubai, the dress code is a little more conservative. We’d suggest if you are taking part in any of the adventure activities to wear something comfortable and sporting. Probably best you leave your bikini at home for the water sports though, ladies, it would be a courtesy to your other guests to wear something more like bike shorts and a tank top. Just visiting the cultural sights of parks, do aim to dress conservatively covering knees and shoulders as a rule of thumb. Something loose and breathable during the day is a great choice, especially if you’ll visit the heritage village and historic sites. For nighttime in winter, definitely pack yourself a sweater and maybe some warmer trousers, it can get chilly in the mountains. Campers may want even more warm layers.

"The Land of Adventures!"

Hatta tourism.

Staying true to the vision of the founders of the United Arab Emirates of expanding into modern horizons while sticking to its roots, Hatta is an amalgamation of adventure and culture. It is an exclave of the United Arab Emirates and is located high above in the Hajar Mountains. Cosseted in the mighty heights, it is landlocked by Oman, Ajman and Ras-Al-Khaimah. Popular for Kayaking and other adventure sports such as kayaking, hiking, climbing and camping - Hatta's economy mainly rests on tourism.

Hatta gives a sneak peek of the rural culture, heritage and lifestyle during old times. On getting here, one can gauge the evolution of Dubai from a dusty hot desert to a glittering city with the most amazing skyline and thrilling activities to enjoy. It was restored in the year 2001 and was open for tourists for sightseeing and sports like biking, hiking, kayaking, swimming etc to name a few. Rocky roads, campsites, hill parks, bike trails, lakes lined with palm trees is an exquisite experience in itself.

What to do in hatta.

  • Washroom facilities are scarce here. But you will find public washrooms near the Hatta Dam and near Hatta Culture Centre.
  • The days might be hot but at times Hatta is cooler than Dubai. Do keep something warm with you just in case there is a change in the weather.
  • There is good access to clean drinking water but when it comes to mountain cycling, it is recommended to carry your own water since you will be doing it for two to three hours and might not find water on the way.
  • Hire a skilled driver to drive you to Hatta as driving in this terrain is not everyone’s cup of tea.
  • Plan your visit in a way that you don’t have to drive at night owing to the risks attached to the terrain.
  • If you are going for Kayaking, opt for a paddleboat instead of the usual one.

By Car: The fastest, most flexible, and easiest way to get to Hatta from Dubai, or any other emirate, is by car. If you are visiting UAE, the best option is to rent a car (petrol in UAE is cheap: approx. AED 2 per liter). That being said, a one-way ride will cost as little as 19-27 AED. You can get a great deal on a rental car using a reliable Discover Cars booking site.

By Bus: Public buses are a less common means of transportation across the UAE, and not many people use them. However, if you have extra time to spare and are not willing to drive, a super cheap option is to take around 2.45 hours bus ride for AED 10 one way. You can check the schedule on RTA website. Bus E16 is operating daily from Sabkha Bus Station in Deira, Dubai to Hatta Bus Station. You must have NOL card to use public bus and metro services in Dubai. Note that in Hatta, you may need to catch a taxi to get to some of the locations such as Hatta Dam, or Hatta Wadi Hub as they are a few kilometers away from the bus station.

By Taxi: This is by far the costliest option out of all (unless you are coming in a helicopter). It will leave you AED 230- AED 290 short for only a one-way ride.

Tour operators: If you are short on time, and also want the trip to be fully organized for you, covering all the major sights in Hatta, then you can confidently book yourself a guided day trip. There is plenty of great half-day and full-day Hatta tours available to conveniently book with VIATOR and Tripadvisor (they also offer 24-hour free cancelation policy and hotel in Dubai pick-up).

TOP 10 things to do in Hatta, UAE

1. go hiking in hatta, dubai (a guide to the hatta sign).

Hatta is the largest national park in Dubai. Therefore, one of the best things to do in Hatta is to trek the clearly marked beautiful trails winding at the foothills and wadis of the Hajar mountains .

Both beginners and experienced hikers will find their perfect route by following color-graded Hatta’s hiking trails which span a total of 32.6km. Currently, this is the longest signposted trail network in the UAE.

things to do in hatta, dubai hiking, Hatta mountain sign aerial view

The starting point of the trails is at Hatta Wadi Hub . From here you can choose your preferred route. Signboard maps are displayed at Hatta Wadi Hub and indicate the distances and difficulty level of each trail. The shortest trek is only 1km, while the longest one is 7.5km with an elevation gain of almost 800 meters above sea level.

If you are a complete beginner, start with the easiest leveled walks across green trails. Then, when confident enough, you can progress to the blue and red routes. The most experienced hikers have the more adventurous option of exploring the black trails.

Note that Hatta hiking trails intersect with each other. This allows you to create your own route that covers each level of difficulty. In my humble opinion, green trails are super easy, and suitable even for little kids as it is a simple walk without any elevation gain. Therefore, even without much hiking experience, one can still head directly to the blue trails.

The views along the trails are impressive. You will enjoy the scenery of the laid-back town of Hatta surrounded by gorgeous Hajar mountains. Those views can be seen better while trekking at higher elevation sections. While at other parts of the trails you may feel far away from civilization as you will be completely surrounded by mountains.

Finally, when approaching Hatta, you will definitely spot a famous sign, called the “Hollywood sign of Hatta”. A couple of trekking routes can take you up there if you are curious to check it out from up close. I was keen on getting up there, therefore I am sharing a couple of options on how to hike to the Hatta Sign below.

How to hike to Hatta “Hollywood” sign?

woman hiking at hatta mountain trails with hatta hollywood sign in the background- best things to do in hatta

Option 1- a loop. Distance ~7.5km, time 2.5 hours, Max elevation 385 M. Highlights: views of Hatta town, farms, donkeys, goats, narrow mountain trails, some scrambling over the rocky hill, Hatta sign.

When I hiked to the Hatta sign, I did not start at Hatta Hub where most of people do.  Instead, after passing the Hatta roundabout with a fort in the middle, I took the first right to a side road that leads to Sheikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Dam. I parked on the road next to the bridge crossing over the earlier mentioned dam and water ponds. Google coordinates 24.814433, 56.143075.

I made my hiking route a bit more adventurous, as I skipped some sections of the marked trails. I approached the Hatta sign from its front (a usual way is reaching it from the back). Once I got close enough to the Hatta sign, I just took a shortcut and climbed the rocky hill up. On my way back down from the sign I took the dirt road which is used for carts. This dirt road is behind the Hatta sign.

My route covers bits of red, blue, and green sections of the Hatta trail network. Therefore, advisable for intermediate hikers.

best things to do in hatta- hiking hatta trails

The waypoints to follow:

  • Cross the bridge and then you can either go left or right. On your left, there is the gate to the farm. If it is open, you can just take the path crossing the farm. Alternatively, you can take the right and follow the fence of the farm until the end.
  • Look for a signpost called Asaf, Google coordinates 24.807194, 56.139144. Then head left – look for a narrow mountain trail which you have to follow. It will gradually take you higher.
  • Always keep left when following the trails. You will come across some signposts reminding you are on the marked trails. Soon you will be able to see the Hatta sign.
  • Continue walking until around this point: 24.805310, 56.146623. From here, you can just climb up the hill directly towards the sign. The climb is a little steep, with an instant elevation gain of 70 meters. However, it is not technical, just mind the loose rocks.
  • You now reached Hatta Sign. To go back, go behind the sign. You can follow the signposts of the trails- those are very scenic mountain paths. Aim toward the left-hand side, as you need to come back down. Alternatively, just take a wide dirt road used for carts- easy option but not as beautiful as the first one.
  • Once down the hill, continue straight until around this point 24.811389, 56.156569. Then turn left and follow green trails by walking parallel to the mountain. On the way, you will pass some water ponds surrounded by very high grass, as well as one smaller bridge (you have to go under it). Continue until you reach the starting point.

I have recorded this trail on Wikiloc here .

Option 2- one way. Distance (return) ~5 KM, time ~2 hours, Max elevation 385 M. Highlights: farms, donkeys, goats, narrow mountain trails, Hatta sign.

If you prefer to keep it simpler and easier, a shorter way is to start at Hatta Hub. The waypoints to follow:

  • From Hatta Hub head towards the hiking trails and start with the Green 1 trail. Continue until the signpost that says, Reem.
  • From Reem, follow the direction of the sign towards Thamaam , still on the same green 1 route.
  • Once you reach the Thamaam signpost, head left in the direction of Washq . Now you are on the green 4 route which goes through a dry river bed (wadi) but it is still an easy walk. You will soon reach a signpost called Ja’ada
  • From here follow the blue 1 route towards Qa’taa signpost. From Qa’taa you start heading uphill.
  • Once you reach Qa’taa , take the right and follow the blue 2 route towards the Dhabi signpost. You will be able to see the Hatta sign from the back when hiking. Always keep right.
  • From the Dhabi signpost continue following the blue 2 route all the way up to Wa’el – HATTA sign spot.

This route has a steep incline; however, it is not difficult. Pace yourself and you will soon reach the famous Hollywood sign of Hatta with fantastic views overlooking the mountains, bits of Hatta town, and farms.

Come back to the Hatta Hub following exact same route.

What is the best time for hiking in the Hatta mountains?

During the winter months from November to March, you can hike at any time of the day as the temperatures are mild and nice. However, in summer you must wake up as early as 4 am to reach the starting point before the crazy heats kick in. Therefore, if you are heading out for a hike in Hatta anytime from May to September, it is advisable to start very early (5 am-6 am) in the morning and stick to the shorter routes to avoid the heat. October and April are the shoulder seasons for hiking in the UAE, therefore morning and late afternoons are suitable for trekking in Hatta.

How to prepare for the hike in Hatta?

The key factors  you must always   consider when preparing for any hike in the UAE are hot summer temperatures, cold winter nights, the possibility of rain, unforgiving rough terrain, and your experience and knowledge about a similar environment.

Therefore, being well prepared for the hike will make your experience much more pleasant.

Here is my checklist of how to be prepared for hiking in UAE

  • Sufficient amount of water – crucial for any hike. For the UAE where the weather is hot all year round, take extra than you think you may need.
  • Lightweight power snacks like dates, bananas, protein bars. Also, electrolyte drink aside from water makes wander after long sweaty hours.
  • Sturdy footwear with good grip . The terrains are rough and rocky. Therefore, it is very important you are wearing shoes, ideally mid-ankle height, that has good grip, to prevent you slipping and twisting your legs. I have been hiking in my Columbia boots since I started, and I am so far happy with it.
  • Comfy and functional backpack . For a half-day hike you don’t need much supplies to fit in. Still, a backpack with a good back support and, ideally, a space for water bladder, makes a difference. Check out this Osprey backpack chich is great for day hikes.
  • Get a water bladder if you are planning to make hiking a regular acitivty. Water bladder has a straw. This means you don’t have to remove your backpack when you want to drink water. Also, water, when filled in the bladder, is evenly distributed in the backpack. I use my two or three liter camel backs (depending on how long the hike is). You can check prices here on Amazon .
  • Sunsreen, cap and sun glasses. Sun is harsh, so make sure to protect yourself.
  • Comfy sweat wicking clothes. I usually hike in gym or hiking leggings and t-shirts. For winter months, I through in a lightweight fleece as morning and evening can be chilly.
  • Hiking poles. It is not a must but very helpful for the descending part. It can be quite tough for the knees when climbing down. For the light weight foldable trekking poles check this pair at Amazon .
  • Basic first aid kit. Terrains are rough and sometimes mini injuries can happen. Even as simple as getting a blister. So having plaster for this type of emergency can really make or break your hike.
  • Power bank to keep your phone charged.
  • GPS device or a Wkiloc app with an accurate trail recording. Check Garmin GPS device on Amazon .
  • A rechargeable torchlight in case you end up hiking in the dark. If you want to keep your hands free, then a powerful rechargeable headlamp is a perfect solution.

HAVE A SAFE HIKE AND, PLEASE, KEEP THE NATURE CLEAN!

2. Explore Hatta on a mountain bike

If you love mountain cycling, Hatta is a place to go! Starting from the same before mentioned adventure park of Hatta Wadi Hub, the mountain bike trail network covers 52 km. It is color-graded according to difficulty (green-easy, blue-intermediate, red-advanced, black- experts). Note that mountain bike trails are in the same area as the hiking trails but they aren’t the same trails and have different markings. Just be aware of the hikers when riding.

On a bike, you will be able to tackle even larger grounds surrounded by beautiful landscapes of the Hatta mountains. Needless to say, it is a faster but by far more extreme way than hiking. UAE mountain terrains are rough and full of rocks to watch out for. Mountain bike trails at more advanced sections are steep, therefore, you must be experienced in maneuvering your two-wheel ride. If not, start warming up at the easiest green trails.

Highlights of the mountain trails in Hatta: along the way, you will pass farmlands, rocky hills, and natural pools, and you might even discover a few hidden oases.

Can I rent a mountain bike in Hatta?

Yes, if you don’t have your own, then you can rent a mountain bike starting at 65 AED per hour (the price depends on the size of the bike) from The Bike Shop located at the Hatta Wadi Hub complex.

3. Enjoy serene nature while kayaking at the spectacular Hatta Water Dam

hatta dam view from kayak

Hatta is home to the photographer’s beloved gorgeous Hatta Dam which is built over a teal color lake. The fascinating water dam welcomes you to glide through its waters in a kayak. Kayaking is one of the best activities in Hatta and a great refresher from boiling desert heat during the summer months.

You can rent your single or double kayak at the Hatta Kayak rental kiosk next to the dam at a price of AED 60 (single) or AED 120 (double). You can also rent different kinds of water vehicles like water donuts and pedal boats.

Hatta kayak kiosk

Usually, there are plenty of kayaks available at Hatta Dam, but if you are going on a Friday, you may want to secure one in advance. The contact number for Hatta Kayaks is +971566162111.

  • Alternatively, you can book a full-day Hatta sightseeing tour , which includes kayaking, and other amazing stops on the way to Hatta (Showka, and Buhais geology park in Mleiha). Tour starts from Dubai (hotel pick-up available). Click here to check prices and availability.

Hatta water dam, also called Hatta Lake, is a spectacular sight on its own. Therefore, even if you are not planning to kayak, it is worth stopping by. Come during the sunset or sunrise to witness this spectacular panorama of calm teal waters set against the rough-hewn mountains.

4. See the World’s Largest Inclined Mural at Hatta Dam

A very unexpected sight in Hatta is a massive graffiti of the founding fathers of the UAE- the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum. The huge mural was painted for the occasion of the National Day of the UAE some years back. Today it is a little faded due to the sun (hopefully it will soon get some freshen up). The mural is located at Hatta Dam parking.

Parking at Hatta Dam

There is plenty of free parking space available at the bottom of Hatta Dam where the mural is. Sometimes, in the case of a busy weekend, or events happening at the Dam (such as National Holiday), you might not be allowed to drive all the way up to the Dam’s bridge (this is where the wonderful views are revealed from). It is something to take into consideration as the road leading up is quite steep (good leg workout though).

Hatta Dam park is busy during the national holiday of UAE

For those of you who love it all organized, I recommend a half-day guided tour at Viator . It includes a kayaking and sightseeing tour of Hatta town (with hotel pick up from Dubai). Or, spend a great full day in Hatta, and see it all with Full Day Hatta Tour which includes kayaking and offers Dubai Hotel pick-up.

5. Camp under the stars in Hatta

Hatta qualifies as one of the best camping locations in the UAE for multiple reasons. There are plenty of great overnight camping spots surrounded by beautiful landscapes. Some of them are closer to civilization and even offer the convenience of having washrooms and food within reach of a hand, while some are pure wild escapes for the real nature adventurers. Another advantage is that Hatta has an access to the body of water (the dam and multiple smaller artificial lakes), which makes camping here more refreshing that just a completely dry desert.

It is advisable to camp at designated spots in Hatta. That being said, you might not be completely alone at those spots. However, you can always get a little bit more adventurous and head deeper into the mountains to find your solo pitch.

Let’s explore our options below.

Free camping at designated spots. Although there are quite a few places dedicated to camping, some of the popular ones get pretty crowded.

However, you can still find great places a little bit out of the beaten path. One great option is by the lake, which is further away from the mainstream places but still close enough to civilization. It is called BBQ and Cap Site. You can park there and pitch your tent by the lake. Note that there are no amenities like washrooms and no food trucks or shops within walking distance. Therefore, you must come prepared with your supplies. Note: this place still can get busy during the weekends.

Paid camping with amenities. If you do not fancy it too wild, there is an option to have a golden middle between being in the wilderness and having all the amenities a few steps away. Hatta Wadi Hub offers a paid campsite from AED 129 to AED 199 to pitch a tent, and AED 299 to AED 399 for a campervan at a designated camping area which allows you to use their BBQ spots, washroom, and have a few food trucks close by as well. Note: this camping spot is next to an adventure park, therefore, suits those who want to combine their stay in nature with some fun activities and do not mind a bit of a crowd as many families love to come there.

drone-aerial-Hatta-Dam-Hike-Secret-Canyon-trail-UAE-6

Camping in the mountains. Those of you, who are more adventurous and love the raw wilderness, can always explore your own options inside the mountains. Note that the terrain is very rocky, so you will definitely need an extra mattress for a more comfortable sleep under the stars.

Is it safe to camp in Hatta, Dubai?

The UAE being one of the safest countries in the world makes the camping experience very attractive as well. The only things to watch out for are snakes and scorpions. Although those do not attack people as many may often think, you need to watch out for your steps, especially at night when they are out and about.

6. Go glamping at the foothills of the Hatta mountains.

For those of you who want more comfort but still stay surrounded by nature, a luxurious glamping experience with a fantastic outdoor setup would be a perfect solution. Therefore, going glamping is yet another awesome experience in Hatta, Dubai.

One of the best spots where luxury meets outdoors and does it in a uniquely stylish way is the first region’s “trailer hotel” The Sedr Trailer Resort . Nestled in the Hajar Mountains right at the banks of the mesmerizing Hatta Dam and tucked away from the streets of Hatta town, The Sedr Trailers are the perfect staycation in nature.

The resort is comprised of a selection of 13 gleaming trailers parked around a huge area amidst the mountains. Each trailer is fully equipped with the most important tools and facilities: kitchen, shower, beds, living area, and private BBQ area where you can have a bonfire under the stars.

Before we go into the details exploring the incredible Hatta Dam and Reservoir, let’s take a moment to marvel at the remarkable engineering that brought it to life.

The Hatta Dam is an impressive concrete gravity dam created through the collaboration of the French company Coyne et Bellier and a Swiss contractor, Impregilo, with the support of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA).

Construction commenced in 1985 and spanned five years, costing approximately 70 million USD.

Reaching a towering height of 80 meters and stretching 300 meters in length, the Hatta Dam can hold a staggering 165 million cubic meters of water.

This reservoir spans an impressive 2.4 square kilometers and boasts a serene shoreline that stretches 7 kilometers.

On a significant day, January 8, 1990, the Hatta Dam was inaugurated by the esteemed late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Dubai’s former ruler, whose visionary leadership spearheaded numerous development projects across the city.

Among his most ambitious endeavors was the Hatta Dam, designed to provide a dependable water source for Dubai’s burgeoning population and industries, while also fostering tourism and recreational opportunities in the area.

Nestled within the striking Hajar Mountains, the Hatta Dam and Reservoir form an essential part of the vast Al Hajar Mountains range, stretching from northern Oman to eastern UAE.

These mountains are renowned for their rugged terrain, deep valleys, and towering peaks, soaring magnificently to heights of up to 3,000 meters above sea level.

Situated at a remarkable altitude of 200 meters above sea level, the Hatta Dam finds itself cradled in a valley, flanked by two majestic mountains, presenting a setting of unparalleled beauty that captivates the eye.
