Henry Winkler on being ghosted by Paul McCartney, that 'baloney' John Travolta 'Grease' feud

LOS ANGELES – Here's a big tip when speaking to Henry Winkler : Don't refer to the beloved star of " Happy Days " and HBO's "Barry" as "the nicest guy in Hollywood." He hates that.

Winkler, who just turned 78, constantly acts like the world's coolest guy. And he invited USA TODAY into his home to gleefully tell story after story, only pausing to ask (often) if anyone wanted something to eat from the top-notch spread he laid out on the kitchen table of his Los Angeles home.

But seriously, don't even mention "nice," which many people do.

"I'm not nice," Winker says flatly. "I am grateful. I am joyful. I'm so just happy I'm on this planet."

Check out: USA TODAY's weekly Best-selling Booklist

This unflagging (and slightly peculiar) joy and wonder permeates Winkler's, "Being Henry: The Fonz…And Beyond" , (out now from Celadon Books). The memoir tells Winkler's fever dream of a Hollywood career that incredibly began with the life-changing "Happy Days" The Fonz role dropping one month after the blissfully naive 28-year-old actor landed in Los Angeles. Winkler makes clear he's still appreciating the crazy ride that peaked again as a septuagenarian with his Emmy-winning ride on HBO's "Barry."

  • "Being Henry: The Fonz...and Beyond" at Amazon for $21
  • "Being Henry: The Fonz...and Beyond" at Bookshop.org for $28

He discussed some memorable "Being Henry" points:

Fonzie performed a 'Happy Days' miracle parting a rabid Dallas crowd

"Being Henry" chronicles the "Happy Days" instant success that exploded in 1974, making Winkler the star of every '70s kid's lunch box. His first movie theater date with Stacey, now his wife of 45 years, was spent dealing with incessantly approaching fans.

The Yale Drama School graduate never spoke as The Fonz in public back then in a vain attempt at preventing being typecast as the lovable greaser. But at a Dallas fan event with co-stars including Ron Howard (Fonzie's clean-cut friend Richie) a screaming crowd of frenzied supporters surrounded the group, blocking their waiting cars and safe exit. Winkler went full Fonz."Using Fonz voice, I shouted, 'Alright! You are going to part like the Red Sea. You're not going to touch us,' " the 5-foot-6 Winkler says. "And they actually parted. We walked to the car, got in, and drove off."

Winkler is still waiting for Paul McCartney's return call

Winkler loves his Hollywood star sightings and fills his memoir with giddy encounters like visiting " The Godfather Part II " set where he complimented young Robert De Niro on his f-bomb dialogue artistry. De Niro recalled the touching praise to Winkler decades later.

Some star encounters don't go as well. Like reintroducing himself to Mick Jagger while the rocker was focused on an amorous dinner date. "I slunk out of the restaurant," says Winkler. But his most perfectly excruciating star story involves meeting Paul McCartney on a New York City street and the British rocker passing his phone number on saying, "Let's hang out." The excited Winkler called McCartney "seven or maybe 17 times" and left messages, all unreturned.

"He must have thought 'The Fonz. Very cool. But a stalker. And crazy,'" Winkler says, laughing. "I never heard from him again."

Winkler turned down 'Grease,' but calls reports of Travolta tension 'baloney'

Yes, Winkler was offered the Danny Zuko role in "Grease," but turned it down in a financially painful attempt not to be Fonzie typecast. The part went to '70s sitcom contemporary "Welcome Back, Kotter" star John Travolta , who got rich enough to "literally buy a 747," Winkler says. But no hard feelings. Winkler says that unfounded reports of star strain between him and Travolta are "baloney."

"He was amazing in 'Grease,'" says Winkler. "There was no bad blood. That was all made up. I just got a wonderful note from him saying that he loved 'Barry.' He's a wonderful human being.'"

Burt Reynolds was a pain and a half on 'Cop and a Half'

The rare human who gets a challenging "Being Henry" write-up is '70s icon Burt Reynolds, who starred in the Winkler-directed 1993 comedy " Cop and a Half ."

During a preproduction party thrown at his Florida home, Reynolds flexed his connection to the film's producers at Imagine Entertainment, founded by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard.

"(Reynolds) comes down the stairway, and goes, 'I just got off the phone with Ron Howard, he said that I can fire you anytime I want,'" Winkler recalls.

But Winkler shot right back: "Oh, could you tell me right away? Because I've got another film to prep for."

"Where I got the nerve, I don't know," says Winkler. "I can do in my professional life what I cannot do in my real life."

Winkler was starstruck during his 'Barry' Emmy moment

Some of the funniest behind-the-scenes memoir moments involve Winkler auditioning for "Barry," trying to act nonchalant while speaking with creator and star Bill Hader but dying for the role of bombastic drama teacher Gene Cousineau. Winkler's stress level almost blew up when he got excruciatingly lost on his way to a major "Barry" audition. But, of course, Winkler nabbed the career-resurgent part.

Fast forward to 2018 and Winkler joyously hugging Hader at the Emmy Awards after winning best supporting actor , his first win after several nominations over this career. Walking on the Emmy stage , Winkler went starblind meeting the presenters, " The Crown" stars Matt Smith and Claire Foy .

"I swear, my wife and I had just finished 'The Crown' second season. And there's Prince Philip and the Queen on the stage," says Winkler. "I started telling Matt and Claire what a great season they had. They're looking at me like I'm crazy. I'd completely forgotten why I was there. So I only had 37 seconds to give my speech."

Winkler somehow managed to give beautiful words.

"What an amazing night," Winkler says. "I normally keep my Emmy on the living room table so everyone can see it once they walk in the house. But I moved it to my office because I wanted to use it for my Zoom calls."

It looks like Henry Winkler will be skipping Milwaukee, home of the Bronze Fonz, on upcoming tour for his new memoir

henry winkler book tour

Henry Winkler has announced a book tour for his upcoming memoir, "Being Henry: The Fonz ... and Beyond." And we just have one quick question.

How did Milwaukee — you know, the home of the Bronze Fonz — not make the cut?

And to add insult to injury, our neighbor to the south made the 15-city tour schedule not once, but twice. So no, we will not "sit on it."

Winkler played Arthur Fonzarelli in the set-in-Milwaukee sitcom "Happy Days." While the show may have run in the '70s and '80s, Fonzie remains a beloved Brew City icon.

Winkler's role as "the Fonz" is what launched him into prominence, the memoir's description on publisher Celadon Books' website says.

Since then, Winkler has become an Emmy-award winner , an author, comedian, producer and director. He's been on other uber-popular programs, including "Arrested Development," "Parks and Recreation" and HBO's dark comedy "Barry," which recently had its series finale .

Milwaukee is home to a life-size Bronze Fonz statue

In 2008, a life-size statue in the Fonz's honor was erected in Milwaukee , on the RiverWalk just south of Wells Street downtown. Visit Milwaukee had spearheaded an effort that raised $75,000 for the statue, and artist Gerald Sawyer brought it to life.

It arrived with a lot of fanfare , including a parade and celebs, including the king of cool himself, as well as fellow castmates Anson Williams (Potsie) and Erin Moran (Joanie). Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams, the stars of "Laverne & Shirley," a "Happy Days" spinoff, were also in attendance.

"It is a great honor," Winkler said in a previous Journal Sentinel intervie w . "You cannot be blase about that, no matter how much time goes by."

The landmark has since become one of the most "selfied" in the city. Just last year, there was a stir when the Bronze Fonz disappeared from the RiverWalk to undergo routine maintenance . About 40 people, including Mayor Cavalier Johnson, attended a ceremony marking the statue's return .

Milwaukee missing from book tour schedule

On Monday, Winkler tweeted : "I’m thrilled to announce my tour for my memoir, Being Henry! Am I coming to a city near you?"

Answer: No.

The closest Winkler will get to Wisconsin is Naperville, Ill., on Nov. 3 and Chicago on Nov. 4.

If it's not too late, may we suggest adding one more stop? Perhaps somewhere near the RiverWalk just south of Wells Street downtown.

During the tour, attendees will get to hear stories from Winkler's "legendary career — 50 years in Hollywood, creating some of America’s most beloved characters and stories," receive a copy of "Being Henry" and have an opportunity to meet Winkler after the event, according to Celadon Books' website .

The book, set to be released on Oct. 31, is "filled with profound heart, charm, and self-deprecating humor" and about "so much more than a life in Hollywood and the curse of stardom," the book's description says.

"It is a meaningful testament to the power of sharing truth and kindness and of finding fulfillment within yourself."

Henry Winkler: The Fonz and Beyond

  • 12th Jun 2024 - 3rd Jul 2024

Fresh from touring to sell out audiences in New Zealand and Australia, Henry Winkler is preparing to head to the UK this June. Join him as he shares stories of his life to rejoice in 50 years of an incredible Hollywood career. Told he would never achieve, the Emmy-award-winning actor, bestselling author, director and producer treads the boards with his heart-warming story of success to celebrate his memoir, Being Henry .

Launched into stardom as "The Fonz" in the beloved sitcom Happy Days , Henry has transcended the role that defined a generation of cool. In the enduring glory of that fame, Henry has endeared himself to new generations of fans with iconic roles in shows such as Arrested Development , Parks And Recreation , and Barry .

Dynamic, vivid, hilarious and emotional, Henry will take you from the achingly vulnerable lows to the stratospheres of global acclaim (chiefly his appearance at the 1976 Logies), from the disheartening truth of an upbringing with undiagnosed dyslexia, to the pressures of a role that takes on a life of its own - and the path forward once your wildest dream seems behind you. As if that isn't enough, add to the mix a story about his dogs and a live audience Q&A!

Henry Winkler says: "I could not be more excited to be touring England and Ireland this summer to share stories and insights from my Memoir. I know you'll laugh - maybe cry (have tissues on hand). And I really look forward to taking your questions and meeting you all!!"

Scott Detrow

NPR's Scott Detrow speaks with Henry Winkler about his memoir Being Henry: The Fonz... and Beyond , which details his big break on Happy Days and his mental health journey.

SCOTT DETROW, HOST:

If you were born after, say, 1990, when you think of the actor Henry Winkler, you probably first think of Barry Zuckerkorn, the incompetent lawyer on "Arrested Development."

(SOUNDBITE OF TV SHOW, "ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT")

HENRY WINKLER: (As Barry Zuckerkorn) What are we doing here? What's the plan?

JESSICA WALTER: (As Lucille Bluth) The plan? You're our lawyer.

WINKLER: (As Barry Zuckerkorn) It's a figure of speech.

DETROW: Or maybe the acting teacher Gene Cousineau, on the HBO dark comedy "Barry."

(SOUNDBITE OF TV SHOW, "BARRY")

WINKLER: (As Gene Cousineau) Now, look. You're in a shell. You need to break out, and I've got the perfect antidote for you. You're going to play Blake in "Glengarry Glen Ross," the movie. Here's my only direction. Let the cat out.

DETROW: But for those of us born before 1990, he will always be Arthur Fonzarelli, aka the Fonz, on "Happy Days."

(SOUNDBITE OF TV SHOW, "HAPPY DAYS")

WINKLER: (As Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli) 'Cause I'm the Fonz. Ay. (ph).

MARION ROSS: (As Marion Cunningham) What does that mean?

DETROW: The incredible story of how Winkler got that role is just one part of his new memoir, "Being Henry." And before we started talking about his life and his career, I asked him to read from his book about the moment Winkler became the Fonz.

WINKLER: (Reading) I'm in Hollywood for one week, and I audition for a new series. So how was I going to accomplish this? I had no clue. Then I opened my mouth and something very odd happened. What came out was a voice that was not mine, one I actually never heard before from me - deeper, lower in my chest than any other regular speaking voice, assured, authoritative, rough around the edges. So I pointed to Pasqual (ph) - ay, I said.

DETROW: That scene - first of all, it's just amazing to get a sense of - kind of be present at the creation for such a big pop culture moment. But it gets to so many themes of the book. You were so comfortable and self-assured in character, particularly this character. Why do you think that was so hard, as you think back on it, with all of that work that you've done? Because objectively, you were cool. You were the Fonz.

WINKLER: But that was acting. I was just being who I wanted to be, not who I ever thought I was.

DETROW: Yeah. You know, people sometimes say there's no such thing as an overnight sensation, but you truly were. You went from couchsurfing and awkwardly staying too long with friends in LA as you scrambled for auditions to suddenly being the center of a cultural phenomenon. That must have been so startling.

WINKLER: I have to say, it was startling. It was fun. And I made an appearance in Little Rock, Ark. After we filmed on Friday night, I flew there so I could sign autographs at the mall. And we landed, like, at 11:30 at night. And when I got off the plane, I walked back on the plane because there was a big party going on. And I said to the flight attendant - I said, excuse me, but there are lots of people, and I don't want to, like, disturb their party. Is there a way to walk around it? And she said that party is for you. There were 3,000 people in '50s clothing waiting for me to get off that plane.

DETROW: Wow. You do "Happy Days." It's a huge success. But then the second half of the '80s and basically all the '90s you're doing producing work. You're doing some directing work. But you were in a real funk as an actor because people didn't want to put the Fonz in their movie, in their show. That must have been hard.

WINKLER: Absolutely. When I did "Scream," they said, you know, all right, the director asked you to be in it, but we're not putting your name on the movie or on the poster. It was really bad. That's why I became a producer and tried directing. I wasn't getting work as an actor, which was the dream I've had since I was 7. And it was devastating.

DETROW: Self-consciousness and self-doubt were such a persistent problem for you. When did you realize that you needed to be a little more serious about your mental health, you needed to figure out why you had this self-doubt, you needed to talk to a therapist?

WINKLER: About nine, 10 years ago. I was still functioning as an actor, but my life was not fun. I could only relate to my puppies, my children. Stacey felt left out - my wife. And I found this incredible therapist. And I have to say - I say it in the book - if I were to give this doctor, this woman, a gift, it would have to be the size of a skyscraper. Because only by asking questions or saying - never answering the question, just saying, so what do you think? What do you feel? What's the answer? Pushing me. Pushing, prodding me.

DETROW: Yeah.

WINKLER: That is the umbrella of the book. Starting - being who I thought I should be and not wavering from that very tight structure because of fear that - what happens if I change a little bit? What happens - oh, my God - if this part of me comes out? To being a more authentic human being on the earth.

DETROW: I mean, I have to assume, no question, this helped you so much with your personal relationships and with your family, but how did it help you with your acting?

WINKLER: Oh, my God. Listen. To know yourself is to know the universe.

DETROW: I love that. It had to help on screen too though, right?

WINKLER: I want to be the most talented actor. I want to be Anthony Hopkins. But I could never have played Gene Cousineau without this latter part of my life journey. And that's not even hyperbole. I want to say, definitively, that is true.

DETROW: The last question I have for you is you have done a lot of self-reflection in the last decade or so, but now you've put it to paper. You've written this memoir. Is there anything you realized about yourself writing this book that hadn't fully clicked before?

WINKLER: That is a good question because the thought I had was - my youngest son, Max, was the one who pushed me for years and said, you should write your stories. You got a lot of stories. You should tell these stories. And I said, I can't do it. It seems daunting to me. I go back to it, and it reaffirms an old thought that I've learned so far in my life, and that is, you don't know what you can accomplish until you just try. I've tried to talk my way out of so many adventures that I would have given up if I didn't eventually say, Henry, shut up and just try.

DETROW: That was Henry Winkler. His new memoir is "Being Henry: The Fonz...And Beyond."

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "HAPPY DAYS")

PRATT AND MCCLAIN: (Singing) Ready to race to you. These days are ours, happy and free, those happy days. These days are ours, share them with me. Goodbye grey sky, hello blue. 'Cause nothing can hold me when I hold you. Feels so right. It can't be wrong.

DETROW: And before we let him go, we couldn't resist asking if the Fonz could take us out of the segment.

PRATT AND MCCLAIN: (Singing) Happy and free, those happy days. These days are ours, share them with me...

WINKLER: (As Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli) All right, let me tell you something. You're listening to ALL THINGS CONSIDERED, NPR News. How lucky are your ears?

ABOUT THE BOOK

From Emmy-award winning actor, author, comedian, producer, and director Henry Winkler, a deeply thoughtful memoir of the lifelong effects of stardom and the struggle to become whole.

Henry Winkler, launched into prominence as “The Fonz” in the beloved Happy Days , has transcended the role that made him who he is. Brilliant, funny, and widely-regarded as the nicest man in Hollywood (though he would be the first to tell you that it’s simply not the case, he’s really just grateful to be here), Henry shares in this achingly vulnerable memoir the disheartening truth of his childhood, the difficulties of a life with severe dyslexia, the pressures of a role that takes on a life of its own, and the path forward once your wildest dream seems behind you.

Since the glorious era of Happy Days fame, Henry has endeared himself to a new generation with roles in such adored shows as Arrested Development , Parks and Recreation , and Barry , where he’s been revealed as an actor with immense depth and pathos, a departure from the period of his life when he was so distinctly typecast as The Fonz, he could hardly find work.

Filled with profound heart, charm, and self-deprecating humor, this memoir is a memoir about so much more than a life in Hollywood and the curse of stardom. It is a meaningful testament to the power of sharing truth and kindness and of finding fulfillment within yourself.
