Explore the cool side of Jamaica’s rain forest with awesome scenic views, diverse flora and fauna and an abundance of bird species. Hiking to the peak (7,402 feet or 2,256m) of the Blue Mountains to watch the sunrise is for anyone who loves nature and like being active. This tour can be done as 2-3 day tour or can be part of a 7-10 day round tour Jamaica.

With our seven-seater Jeep we will pick you up from your hotel in Negril or any place in Jamaica and drive through Kingston, Papine and Mavis Bank all the way through the mountains to the old, still working, coffee plantation of Whitfield Hall.

Here you sleep in the renovated coffee plantation. Within the house there is no electricity, so night-time light comes from Tilley kerosene pressure lamps and normal kerosene lanterns, which gives a romantic atmosphere. After a delicious dinner you need to sleep early; the hike will start around 3 am to make sure you will be at sunrise at the peak.

The trail is easy to follow with signs every step of the way, although at night it might be much more difficult. Some areas of the path are flat, some parts can be wet, slippery and muddy after rainfall. Other areas have rocky gravel, that make it slightly more difficult to walk.

At the summit you will have time to watch the sunrise and make pictures, drink some water and eat a snack; have a little pause before descending. Remember, it can be very cold this high. When clear sky you might be able to see Cuba, as they say so.

Varying skill levels The Blue Mountain Peak trail falls within the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Short trails are suited for those who would rather a nice easy stroll among the flora and fauna and longer trails for those who like to be more physically challenged. To the summit will be a long trail! Depending on speed the hike to the peak takes 3 – 3.5 hours. Descending another 3 hours. When raining the hike will be cancelled. Of course the hike is also possible as a day hike, leaving at sunrise.

It's about 2:00am and pitch black. A crisp breeze blows the sleep out of your eyes, and you flick on your flashlight. It shines with a dull orange glow, illuminating a fraction of a rugged path. Muscles tight, and bones creaking in the cold, you begin your hike - a seven-mile trek up to the Blue Mountain Peak. The peak is the highest on the island, rising to an altitude of 7,402 feet. In the darkness you climb steadily for four hours. Guided by your flashlight and clinging to the mountain wall, you forge ahead.

The way is narrow and steep, especially at a part known as Jacob's Ladder. But one by one, you conquer each little hurdle. With every step up, the stars seem to get closer. As you near the top, the dark outline of the forest grows on either side, and sometimes the silvery outline of a tree fern catches your eye. Then, the morning light begins to break through the shadows. It becomes a race against the sun. You fight hard to keep going, distracted by the spectacular views that are unfolding. With a sigh of relief you reach the peak. The sun rises over the mist-laced mountains surrounding you. On a clear day, you can see Buff Bay and Port Antonio's Navy Island to the North, and Kingston, Portmore and St Thomas' coast to the south. You even might spot the shadowy form of Cuba, 90 miles to the north. As the strong wind whips around you and the day becomes brighter, you sit seemingly on top of the world, and certainly atop all of Jamaica, knowing you've just conquered The Peak.

You hike down in the daylight, and are surprised not only by the difficulty of the path, but by the botanical richness of the mountains as well. You pass through an elfin forest, where the low canopy makes you feel as though you are walking through a green tunnel. At clear points, breathtaking vistas of the Blue Mountain range open before you. As you descend further, you'll see clusters of tree ferns, bamboo and eucalyptus trees. You'll also notice colorful wildflowers and hundreds of ferns growing alongside the mossy trail. As you travel through this lush tropical forest, birdcalls fill the air, a natural soundtrack for your hike.

Overall, the 14-mile Peak trail takes about seven hours. Starting the trail early in the morning makes for an exciting hike and an incredible view of the sunrise, however, you don't have to follow this popular trend. You can hike in the daylight. If you decide to do the trek in the morning, you can spend the night prior to the hike at either Whitfield Hall or Wildflower Lodge, or camp out at Portland Gap. Both lodges are cosy and rustic, and their staff will make arrangements to pick you up from Kingston or Mavis Bank. They will also organize local guides, and can provide meals on request. Also, in order to drive to the start of the hike near Whitfield Hall, you must have four-wheel drive. Generally, the best time to try the hike is during the Blue Mountains' dry season, which lasts from December to April.

So, if you're looking for a challenging hike and a memorable experience, get your hiking boots on and head for Blue Mountain Peak. Both thrilling and scenic, there is no other trail quite like it on the entire island.

Hike Jamaica – The Blue Mountain Trail Description & Local Hiking Guides

Overview of hiking Jamaica’s Blue Mountain “sunrise” experience:

• Time required: 5 – 8 hours round trip
• Degree of Difficulty: 7 out of 10
• Elevation: Just over 7,450 feet (2,270m) at the highest point.  Actual vertical hiked was just over 3,400 feet (1035m), as the trailhead began around 4,050 feet (1,235m) above sea level
• Distance: About 11.5 miles (18.5km) round trip
• Guide Required: YES – More from the point of view of following the local customs, and for confidence (You don’t have to worry about accidentally wandering off and getting lost on some random side-trail).  Also note that there is a nominal ($20usd per non resident) Park Fee required to hike in the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park (and all Jamaica Parks / Forests).

You can start this Jamaica hike at a Rastafarian lodge situated on Blue Mountain.  After a meal of local red beans & rice, accompanied by various root vegetables, you settle down for a few hours rest/sleep. At 1:30am you wake-up, get dressed and meet the rest of the hiking group – Usually an assortment of locals and visitors to the island, accompanied by Rasta guides.

This hike will likely be very different than anything you’ve ever experienced, as you start off around 2 in the morning in order to catch the sunrise from the peak. It will be fairly cool in the middle of the night, so dress appropriately (in layers, for altitude hiking – not the usual Caribbean). This Jamaica hike starts on an inclined rough road that feeds a couple of properties high in the Mountains. It will be dark, with your headlamps providing the only light . Within a few minutes you’ll be on the famous ‘Jacobs ladder’, which is a long and lazy switchback dirt and gravel road with many ‘washed out’ ruts. It’s fairly steep at this point and you’ll heat up, so you’ll likely want to peel off a layer or two of clothing…

The next section of trail is amazing as it is a well worn path that occasionally takes you through 3-4 foot wide and 3-6 foot deep trench like sections. You’re still going uphill, however it’s not very steep. Due to the darkness, you won’t see much of the trail in advance – Just put one foot in front of the other and kept moving.  You’ll probably want to focus your light and attention on the ground so as to keep your footing. You may come across donkeys standing around on the trail as they are used to haul supplies up to the Portland Gap Ranger station.

It may feel strange not knowing where you are on the mountain, however you’ll probably see some features of the near-by Mountain sides and you’ll feel a refreshing cool breeze as you cross the occasional ridge.

Once you pass through Portland gap, you’re on the final third section of the hike. Be aware, the temperature will likely drop again as you near the top of the mountain .  Suddenly, you’ll be there… At the peak, which is a large flat area with considerable scrub / bushes and a small tower. It will still be dark, so you’ll want to have all your layers of clothes back on again and grab a bite to eat while you wait for the sun to rise. To be clear – It can be very cold up there…  You’ll want to have a winter hat and gloves on!

Take a look around (as best you can) – You’ll probably notice ‘something’ off in the distance in all directions.   As it becomes more and more light out, you’ll realize (Spoiler Alert) that the shapes all around you aren’t neighbouring mountain peaks, but are in fact clouds… You’re above the clouds! As the sun slowly climbs over the horizon, you’ll be able to see the surrounding valleys and distant mountain ranges, as well as Kingston’s twinkling lights below on the coast. You can also see Port Antonio’s distant lights on the other side of the island. Weather permitting, eventually the red ball of fire that is the sun, will become extremely bright and things will start to warm up.  You’ll want to take plenty of pictures at this point.

Once the sun is up, you’ll get a better chance to see what the trail and surrounding areas look like on the way down the mountain.  You’ll see that the top half of the trail is a fairly heavy rain-forest canopy – The occasional breaks allow you to see coffee plantations, valleys, ridges and mountains, as well as some coastline in the distance.

In summary, this is an extremely enjoyable Jamaica hike with mixed degrees of steepness, and at a comfortable (not soaked with sweat like most Caribbean hikes) temperature, with the exception of the peak, which is quite cold for an hour or so. It will take you 3 – 4 hours, taking only a couple quick rest stops, to make it to the top. The views all around the east end of the island under the new rising sun is a special treat – This sunrise hike really is an experience of a lifetime! You’ll probably be joined at the peak by a number of other small groups, however it is still a quiet and un-crowded. As the trail was not overly steep, you’ll probably be able to descend the mountain in 2 – 3 hours without the need for any long breaks.

A Guide To Hiking The Jamaican Blue Mountains

The eastern side of the lush green island of Jamaica is dominated by the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park . The park was designated a UNESCO world heritage site in 2015 due to its unique and diverse flora and fauna, much of it endemic to Jamaica. Magnificently undeveloped, this mountain paradise is best explored on foot. Hiking the Blue Mountains is one of the most rewarding experiences to be had in Jamaica .

The peak of the Blue Mountain sits at a majestic 2256 m (7402 ft), and is made all the more dramatic for the fact that it is possible to see the sea from the top (and from several points on the hike up there). This elevation has a dramatic effect on the climate which is usually several degrees cooler and much damper than at sea level. It is possible to leave Kingston or the coast wearing shorts, and require a coat, hat and umbrella long before the summit is reached. Regardless of fitness levels, there is something for everyone in the Blue Mountains and indeed everyone should make time to visit this area of outstanding natural beauty. It is possible to drive or take a pre-booked taxi to all of the hikes mentioned here.

The Easy – Holywell National Park

By far the most relaxing way to experience the Blue Mountains is to drive up to Holywell National Park. Situated just an hour outside of Kingston at Hardware Gap on the Blue Mountain ridge, Holywell is a beautiful and peaceful place to spend the day. There is a solar-powered visitor centre; picnic sites with fire pits and shelters; toilets; camping sites; and well marked trails. The park is maintained by friendly rangers who are happy to chat about the park and are full of useful and interesting information.

The hikes are all easy, and depending on how many photo stops are made, should only take 30-45 minutes each. The trails are punctuated with information boards detailing local flora and fauna. View-points are marked with wooden platforms ideal for taking that perfect photo – there are outstanding sunrises and sunsets to be seen by those who are up there at the right time of day.

Park in one of the two designated car parks and follow the wooden signs for the trails. No maps are necessary as each trail loops eventually back to the start point. The gradients can be steep at times, but there are magical moments to be had ducking beneath tropical canopies that hang low over paths, or pausing to photograph hummingbirds. Leave the picnic in the car to enjoy at one of the designated sites after the hike. The views from the picnic sites are worth the drive alone.

The Intermediate – Catherine’s Peak

Catherine’s Peak is famous in Jamaica as the location of a mountain spring that supplies much of Jamaica’s bottled natural water. The trail head is in the Jamaica Defence Force’s camp at Newcastle on the road to Holywell and just a 45 minute drive from Kingston .

The road passes right through the middle of the camp, so it isn’t difficult to find. Park the car at the far side of the parade square in the designated spot. Then walk back to the other side of the parade square, keep left and follow the tarmac path up into the army camp. Explain to the lone soldier in the guard post that you wish to walk to Catherine’s Peak and he should oblige by taking details and handing over a permit.

Pass through the single-bar barrier on the left and follow the trail, up and up and up. It takes about about 45 minutes in each direction and gets very steep towards the summit. There is only really one wrong turn that can be taken – into the Clifton Mount coffee farm, a mistake which should soon become apparent.

The peak is marked by radio antenna masts and a triangulation point installed by the original surveyors. If the weather is clear, then the views are spectacular. The descent is back down the same track. After the hike , it is worth either driving the extra 15 minutes to Holywell or stopping at one of the cafes ( Eits or Cafe Blue ) on the road back down to Kingston.

The Hard – The Blue Mountain Peak

The hike to the peak of the Blue Mountain should be on the to-do list of every visitor to Jamaica. The track is well marked and not too steep, but it is a long walk and people who are less than fit might find it difficult. The most popular way to hike to the peak is to spend the night near Penlyne Castle at either Jah B’s or Whitfield Hall , and start out in the early hours hoping to reach the peak by sunrise.

The hike from Whitfield Hall to the peak is circa 10km (six miles) and involves a 1000m (3000ft) gain in elevation. Done at a brisk pace, the summit can be reached in about two and half hours, although a leisurely stroll with frequent stops for photos and food can take twice that. A round trip of between five to eight hours is normal.

Many people opt to use a guide, especially if doing it in the dark and for the first time; however, it is perfectly possible to hike to the peak without a guide. Waterproof and warm jackets are essential, as is water and food. On the hike, the trail passes through Portland Gap, where there is a ranger station (the ranger will collect the park fee as you pass through). This is the last place on the trail to top-up water bottles. It is also possible to camp overnight here, but be prepared to get wet – it rains every day up in the mountains.

As the trail ascends high into the mountains, it is fascinating to observe the changing vegetation – the Elfin Wood near the peak is a magical place. One final word: ignore the people who tell you it is possible to see Cuba from the summit – you’ll be lucky to have a cloudless day.

CANCELLATION POLICY

Flexible: full refund within a limited period.

For cancellations by Guests, cancellation charges depend on when Island Routes receives notice of the cancellation. Minimum cancellation charges are as follows:

Hotel Guests:

24 hours or less: No Refund

48 hours or less: 50% Cancellation Fee

96 hours or less: 25% Cancellation Fee

96+ hours: Full Refund

Shore Excursions:

96 hours or more: Full Refund

Less than 96 hours: No Refund

G r oup Reservations:

60 days prior to tour date: Full Refund

45 days prior to tour date: 50% Cancellation Fee

30 days prior to tour date: 75% Cancellation fee

Less than 30 days prior to tour date: No Refund

All cancellations of, or changes are subject to applicable restrictions. Island Routes Tours will apply any payments made toward the purchase price against any cancellation charges and will refund any balance remaining after the payment of any charges. In order to receive a refund, if applicable, client must request and receive a cancellation confirmation number. The cancellation charges outlined above are liquidated damages and not a penalty. Holiday periods may be subject to additional cancellation charges. NO REFUNDS OR ADJUSTMENTS WILL BE MADE FOR ANY PORTION OF TOUR OR ATTENDANT SERVICES NOT UTILIZED.

Refund Policy: No refunds or adjustments will be made for any portion of your tour not utilized.

Changes to Reservations: All requested changes to reservations are subject to Island Routes' sole discretion, and any changes must be approved in writing.

PREPAID TOUR & EXCURSION RESERVATIONS

By reserving your tour and excursion, you authorize Island Routes Caribbean Adventures to book reservations for the total reservation price. You agree that your credit card will be charged by Island Routes Caribbean Adventures for the total reservation price.

BANK & CREDIT CARD FEES

Some banks and credit cards impose fees for cross-border transactions. By reserving your tour and excursion on this website, you may see an additional cost/fee appearing on your credit card statement. This fee is solely determined by your Bank and/or Credit Card Company and Island Routes Caribbean Adventures takes no responsibility for these associated costs. Tour times and dates may vary based on volume or availability. To the exclusion of tours identified at www.islandroutes.com as being owned by Sunisland Routes and/or Island Routes Tours, there exists no relationship of master and servant or of agency between the Operators of tours and either Sunisland Routes and/or Island Routes Tours, or the hotel. Sunisland Routes and/or Island Routes Tours, and the hotel, do not operate the tours, and for these purposes, the Operators of tours are independent contractors. The Operators of tours are solely responsible for their acts and omissions and Sunisland Routes and/or Island Routes Tours, and the hotel, assume no responsibility for such acts and omissions, or for any injury, loss, damage, sickness or accidents sustained on any of the tours offered for sale , including but not limited to any that occur on and/or during the tour, as well as before and after as part of and/or during transport to/from the tour ‐ again, to the exclusion of tours identified as being owned by Sunisland Routes and/or Island Routes Tours. Without any exclusion, however, Sunisland Routes and/or Island Routes Tours, and the hotel, shall not assume any responsibility for injury, loss or damage to any person that voluntarily participates in cliff diving at any location, including but not limited to Dunn's River Falls or Rick's Café, and/or to any person who voluntarily stops as part of and/or during transport to/from a tour at an unintended destination, meaning one that is separate and apart from the scheduled tour and/or destination. Individuals proceeding in such manner assume any and all responsibility and risk, as this is not a recommended activity. Sunisland Routes and/or Island Routes Tours, and the hotel, in addition shall not assume any responsibility for the loss or damage to money, jewelry, clothing or other valuables that have not been tendered to Management for safe keeping. Please note, for your safety, Guest will not be allowed to participate in helicopter tours and/or transfers if they have undertaken any diving exercise within 24hrs prior to departure of said tour/transfer.

LIMITATION OF DAMAGES

Guest HEREBY ACKNOWLEDGES AND AGREES that Sunisland Routes and/or Island Routes Tours, and the hotel, their parent corporation, affiliates, subsidiaries, insurers, directors, officers, employees, successors, assigns, agents or representatives, SHALL NOT BE LIABLE to Guest for liabilities, claims, actions, damages, cost or expense in any circumstances, for: (A) ANY PERSONAL INJURIES OR PROPERTY DAMAGE ARISING OUT OF OR CAUSED BY ANY ACT OR OMISSION ON THE PART OF ANY Guest(s) and/or Operators of tours, excluding tours identified as being owned by Sunisland Routes and/or Island Routes Tours; (B) EMOTIONAL DISTRESS, MENTAL SUFFERING, OR PSYCHOLOGICAL INJURY OF ANY KIND; OR (C) ANY CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL, PUNITIVE OR EXEMPLARY DAMAGES. This specifically includes but is not limited to liabilities, claims, actions, damages, cost or expense ARISING OUT OF OR CAUSED BY food or drink consumed at third party facilities belonging to third party Operators of tours.

SPECIAL REQUESTS

Sunisland Routes and/or Island Routes Tours cannot guarantee that it will satisfy special requests and we are not responsible if such requests are not met.

PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

Persons with Disabilities: Sunisland Routes and/or Island Routes Tours cannot guarantee that transfer vehicles or tour sites are wheelchair accessible. However, if informed, we will endeavor to make the necessary arrangements. This may however come at an additional cost.

VENUE AND CHOICE OF LAW

ALL CLAIMS WHATSOEVER AGAINST SUNISLAND ROUTES AND/OR ISLAND ROUTES TOURS, ITS AFFILIATES, PARENT COMPANY, SUBSIDIARIES, DIRECTORS, OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES, AGENTS, OR CONTRACTORS, ARISING FROM, IN CONNECTION WITH, OR INCIDENTAL TO THE CONTRACT, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, ANY CLAIMS RELATING TO THE FORMATION, INTERPRETATION, CONSTRUCTION, WAIVER, MODIFICATION, PERFORMANCE, DISCHARGE, OR BREACH OF THE CONTRACT, OR THE EXISTENCE, EXTENT, OR BREACH OF ANY FIDUCIARY DUTY, OR ANY DUTY IN TORT OR PURSUANT TO ANY STATUTE, SHALL BE LITIGATED SOLELY AND EXCLUSIVELY IN THE COUNTRY IN WHICH THE EXCURSION AND/OR TOUR IS OPERATED, AND SHALL BE GOVERNED BY THE LAWS OF THE COUNTRY IN WHICH THE EXCURSION AND/OR TOUR IS OPERATED WITHOUT REGARD TO THE CHOICE OF LAW PRINCIPLES THEREOF.

USE OF GUEST'S LIKENESS

The undersigned Guest(s) irrevocably consents to and authorizes the use and reproduction by Sunisland Routes and/or Island Routes, or anyone authorized by Island Routes, of any and all photographic, video and other visual portrayal(s) of the undersigned Guest(s), their child or ward, for any purpose whatsoever, including but not limited to use in magazines, brochures, flyers, television, internet, and websites displays without further reference or compensation. All rights, title and interest therein (including all worldwide copyrights therein) shall be the sole property of Sunisland Routes and/or Island Routes, or anyone authorized by Island Routes, free from any claims by the undersigned Guest(s) and or any person deriving any rights or interest from such Guest, AND each undersigned Guest(s) UNDERSTANDS AND HEREBY KNOWINGLY AND VOLUNTARILY SO AGREES.

COMPLIANCE WITH LOCAL LAW

Guest is responsible for knowing, obeying and complying with the laws and regulations of their destination, and neither Sunisland Routes and/or Island Routes Tours, nor any Tour Supplier, nor the hotel, has any duty to inform or warn Guest about the destination's laws and/or regulations.

This agreement is governed by the laws of Jamaica. You hereby consent to the exclusive jurisdiction and venue of courts in Jamaica, in all disputes arising out of or relating to the use of this Website. Use of this Website is unauthorized in any jurisdiction that does not give effect to all provisions of these terms and conditions, including, without limitation, this paragraph.

You agree that no joint venture, partnership, employment, or agency relationship exists between you and Island Routes Caribbean Adventures as a result of this agreement or use of this Web site.

What to Expect: Blue Mountain Hiking Tours

The Blue Mountain hiking adventure begins with pickup from your Kingston, Ocho Rios or Port Antonio hotel or a central location. After a brief introduction of the Blue Mountain Hiking Tour activities for the day, we board transportation for a 45-minute to 2 hours drive (based on pick up point) up to Mavis Bank. A 4wd vehicle will take you from Mavis Bank through villages and breathtaking landscapes to Jacob's ladder where the hiking begins. The distance to the top of the Blue Mountain Peak is approximately 7 miles / 11 kilometres.

It is said that on a clear day you can see Cuba from the Blue Mountain Peak. This area is also famous for its' coffee. The Blue Mountain Coffee is pure estate origin coffee. It is produced in a specified zone about 3000 feet above sea-level in cool, misty air that makes for its authentic taste. You will see how coffee is produced and will even be able to savour a delicious cup for yourself. Don’t forget to purchase some extra Blue Mountain Coffee to take home for family and friends, as it may very well be one of the best coffees in the world.

Blue Mountain Tour Options

Sunrise hike.

This tour departs from Kingston, Ocho Rios or Port Antonio and the group will hike to the Peak to meet a beautiful sunrise. 

Daylight Tour Sunset

This tour leaves Kingston, Ocho Rios or Port Antonio and you and your group will hike to the Peak, learning all about the Blue Mountain. Enjoy the most scenic views of the hilly interior and coastline.
