She’s the inspiring subject of Lorenz Knauer’s  feature documentary Jane’s Journey , chronicling the last 20 years of her life as an environmental activist with fervent admiration bordering on cheery hagiography. Overall, film hits the right tone, and its brief but fascinating glimpses into Goodall’s private life distinguishes it from the many TV docs on the lady. Cameos by Angeline Jolie, Pierce Brosnan and Kofi Annan support her environmental mission, which this very positive film will certainly further via television, festivals and schools.

For those unfamiliar with Goodall’s groundbreaking studies of chimpanzees in Tanzania in the 1960s, or for those who confuse her with Dian Fossey and Gorillas in the Mist , as she jokes in the opening scene, Knauer’s doc quickly sketches in her early years. As a young British girl enamoured of animals, she had the luck to be sent to Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania to observe wild chimps, which she continued to study for 45 years through two marriages and raising a son in Africa.

The primatologist of today is shown socializing with chimpanzees in the forest, as her earlier years are recounted. The body of the film describes her nonstop travels and tireless work as a lecturer on environmental issues around the world. Her energy seems limitless as she flies around the globe for the Jane Goodall Institute, visiting local Roots and Shoots groups, which she founded to bring environmental issues to a grassroots community level and which now has branches in 120 countries.

Tall, slender, wearing a gray ponytail and a transcendental smile, Goodall emanates a wise-woman presence that draws the viewer into her anger and desperation over how the world is being thoughtlessly destroyed. Fortunately a message of hope overrides the gloomy statistics. Knauer edits together many of her travels as a U.N. Messenger of Peace, from a chilly reception in North Korea to a warm one in an overcrowded refugee camp in the Congo, to a devastating visit to a poor and depressed Indian reservation in South Dakota. Over and over, she stresses her belief that children will save the world.

Though parts of the film slide inexorably into promoting conservation and animal welfare issues, the partisan feeling is diluted by hints of how Jane’s family life has suffered from her work, once defined by her son Hugo van Lawick as her “obsession.”  Their conflict over his earlier job as a commercial lobster exporter now appears to be over, offering a happy ending to the film as mother, son and grandchildren gambol happily on an African shore.

Positive Messages

The documentary shares Goodall's messages of conservation and animal rights, as well as her commitment to anti-poverty and environmental protection.

Positive Role Models

Goodall is an incredible woman who has dedicated her life to animal rights, research, and conservation issues. She has singularly committed herself to furthering the cause of environmentalism and goes around the world inspiring adults and children to learn more about the world around them. She has influenced and impacted entire communities and, despite her age, manages to find the time to help children through her Roots and Shoots organization.

Violence & Scariness

Mention of some of the difficulties the people in African nations face with poachers, bush meat, and other crises. Goodall discusses the horrors of poaching, rape, and violence that plague certain areas of the world.

Sex, Romance & Nudity

Some footage of Jane kissing her first husband, wildlife photographer Hugo van Lawick, and some discussion of their passionate romance until he became jealous and possessive. Jane also mentions that her second husband, whom she also calls "terribly jealous," was her soul mate.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that this biographical documentary follows the life of English anthropologist Dr. Jane Goodall, who has dedicated herself to championing environmental and animal causes for more than 50 years. There's nothing really inappropriate in the film, but some of the topics -- and the length of the movie -- make it a beter fit for tweens and teens than young kids. Goodall does mention both of her husbands and the romances that led up to her marriages, as well as her husbands' jealousy (there's also footage of her kissing her first husband). Goodall also talks about some of the dangers facing the chimpanzees and the horrors that some communities in Tanzania deal with (bush meat, poaching, rape). Overall, this is an inspiring story of a pioneering women's tireless efforts to promote peace. To stay in the loop on more movies like this, you can sign up for weekly Family Movie Night emails .

What's the Story?

This biographical documentary follows Dr. Jane Goodall's life -- from her earliest years as a budding primatologist to her decision to leave her chimpanzee sanctuary to dedicate herself to traveling around the world to promote peace. Although the film mostly deals with Goodall's milestones as a primatologist, her personal and professional lives are inextricable and filled with sadness (she was married briefly twice -- one marriage ended in divorce and the other with her husband's death). Goodall's life is applauded by colleagues and world figures (and Angelina Jolie ), but her son Grub van Lawick explains some of the personal cost of her dedication.

Is It Any Good?

If JANE'S JOURNEY could be condensed to a tightly edited 70-minute tribute to the admittedly awe-inspiring Goodall, it would make an excellent documentary about a complicated woman. The visuals are beautiful -- especially the scenes in Tanzania's Gombe National Park, which is Goodall's "home." But at just over 100 minutes, the film's substance is too spread out -- spanning everything from Goodall's origins to her shift from Africa-based primatologist to citizen of the world -- to provide more than a passing insight on any period of the famous anthropologist's life. It's understandable, because what a life it's been for Goodall, whose devotion to the chimpanzees seems to have eclipsed every thing else -- even her own son, who's open about his struggles with Goodall throughout the years.

Jolie and other luminaries/Friends of Jane pop up to celebrate Goodall's transition into a world-traveling activist for change. A lot of celebrities hitch their wagons on various "causes," but Jolie has proven herself to be truly globally minded, so her anecdote about how Goodall changed her life is sincerely believable. Another touching moment comes when Goodall visits the Lakota reservation, which has astronomical youth suicide rates. Her impact on the lives of the Lakota community via her Roots and Shoots nonprofit leads a bereaved father to weep, unable to find the words to thank Goodall for caring when no one else did. Ultimately, this film would have benefited from a narrower focus (think Born to Be Wild , which takes half the time to capture two renowned women very similar to, albeit lesser known than, Goodall) or at least a shorter running time. Remarkable as Goodall is, the film tends toward the bland when it should have been as spirited as its subject.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about how they can apply Goodall's messages about peace and conservation to their own lives.

How is Goodall's private life portrayed in relation to her professional life? Did she "balance" life and work well? How does her son feel about growing up with her as a mother?

How is this documentary different than other films about animal rights or environmental issues? Is focusing on person's life more compelling than concentrating on the animals themselves?

Jane’s Journey

Lorenz Knauer's docu "Jane's Journey" wisely keeps its remarkable subject center-stage throughout.

A worshipful tribute to the life and work of Jane Goodall , Lorenz Knauer’s docu “Jane’s Journey” wisely keeps its remarkable subject center-stage throughout, allowing her serene energy to focus the narrative as she recounts her journey from animal conservationist to environmental activist to global humanitarian. Knauer blunders into chirpy advertorial territory with a hokey inspirational montage under an even hokier song midway through, but this mood-destroying passage is mercifully brief. Educational pic could travel almost as extensively as does the indefatigable Goodall, given the soft-spoken, mesmerizing conviction of a woman whom one award presenter dubs an “environmental superstar.”

“Journey”s first leg takes place in Tanzania’s Gombe preserve, where Goodall began as a 23-year-old with no degree or particular training outside of an open mind and love for animals. Present-day HD footage of the white-haired Goodall socializing with chimpanzees alternates with archival excerpts of a young blonde just getting to know the simian locals. These 8mm clips also serve to introduce her first husband, nature photog Hugo van Lawick, while homemovies of an even earlier Goodall illustrate her recollections of English childhood.

Popular on Variety

Once out of Gombe, the docu gets caught up in the whirlwind of activities and obligations that keeps this intrepid primatologist and U.N. Messenger of Peace busy traveling 300 days a year. Knauer presents snippets of her various public appearances, award receptions and speaking engagements on behalf of the Jane Goodall Institute, with particular emphasis placed on the burgeoning Roots and Shoots project, which currently numbers hundreds of grassroots organizations worldwide but started humbly with 16 youths. Formally, this is the docu’s weakest section, dwelling on meet-and-greets and autograph signings with fans.

The final phase of “Journey” features more in-depth jaunts: to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, ravaged by alcoholism and suicide (the site of a Roots and Shoots garden project); to Greenland, where huge slabs of falling ice spectacularly signal the inexorable progress of global warming; to a Congolese refugee camp where the camera zeroes in on the faces of children running alongside the Jeep as Goodall tackles the problem of population displacement.

Pic ends at a Tanzania forest pool where a “hippo whisperer,” whose family has protected the giant beasts for generations, projects his voice across the water, to magical effect.

‘Jane’s Journey’

By Paul Brunick

  • Sept. 15, 2011

This breezy biographical profile of Jane Goodall , the primatologist and “rock star” of conservationism, as one environmentalist introduces her, skimps on intellectual substance but skirts by on the lightly likable charm of its subject, who appears throughout.

After brief recollections of a happy British childhood, Ms. Goodall, now 77, returns to Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania, where some 50 years ago she began her influential research on the social behavior of chimpanzees. Ms. Goodall’s study prompted two major revisions to scientific consensus, demonstrating that chimps were not vegetarian, and that they were capable of fashioning primitive tools.

One interviewee shrugs off criticisms of this work as so much sexism, a dismissal that elides a lively scientific debate. Ms. Goodall’s anthropomorphic engagement with chimps was, literally and figuratively, touchy-feely: she physically engaged them, gave them adorable names like David Greybeard and attributed human emotions like love to their interactions. One of the looming questions about her work is whether her presence exacerbated antisocial aggression , which was then generalized to all apes.

Rather than delving into such issues, “Jane’s Journey” rehashes the banal yet uncomfortably intimate details of Ms. Goodall’s marriages. This same shallowness reduces the remainder of the film, on Ms. Goodall’s environmental advocacy, to little more than fund-raising material for the Jane Goodall Institute (which is, nominally, unaffiliated with the production).

Here perhaps the general superficiality is compounded by a strategic avoidance of divisive political issues. “Sometimes I feel it’s my mission to give people hope,” Ms. Goodall explains, echoing the title of her book, “Reason for Hope.” While I await her presumably forthcoming portrait by Shepard Fairey , I wish “Jane’s Journey” had given me a little more.

Powerful, intimate, inspiring look at the legendary naturalist, activist, and icon. The round the world journey is really just that, an epic journey where Jane travels to every continent and brings hope to everyone she meets. Except the Lakota kids at the Pine Ridge Reservation, who just stare at Jane blankly, and then tear up their own garden and go back to a lifestyle of slow suicide. But as General Custer said, you can't win 'em all.

Offers waaaaay more information and insight into the life and person of Jane Goodall than 2017s "JANE" but unfortunately Knauer does it in the most conventional by-the-numbers style of documentary filmmaking ever. So you end up really wanting to like the film but finding it utterly unsatisfying. Still, 1 star for the ton of important info that far more hypnotic "JANE" didn't even bother to mention.

Jane Goodall is not to be confused with the late Dian Fossey, who was portrayed by Sigourney Weaver in the 80’s film Gorillas in the Mist. This is the very first point made in the documentary Jane’s Journey, a film about the life and work of Jane Goodall, arguably the most famous face of the animal conservation movement. Animal conservation is a personal passion of mine that has intensified over the past 10 years in the face of global mass extinctions and loss of habitats of thousands of species. Ms. Goodall is one of the most inspirational people I know and although I wish this documentary had been better made, it would be difficult to not be similarly inspired by…

Covers a longer period of time than does  'Jane', the more recent, more celebrated biopic, but does it in a duller way. Watch this if you want more info on Jane Goodall, watch the other one for a far better introduction or backgrounder.

You may have the feeling of being stuck at a nice old lady's house while she narrates a meandering slide show in slow, storybook tones.
