Madonna’s Official Top 40 Biggest Selling Singles

madonna_2011.jpg

She made it through the wilderness, somehow she made it through… and 34 years after her very first hit Holiday, Madonna still gets everybody talking.

There’s plenty to say about her performances, her fashion sense, her pushing of boundaries and buttons when it comes to sex and ageing and religion and art, but to do any of that, Madonna has needed one thing – her massive collection of hits.

And what a back catalogue it is - her Top 40 biggest sellers alone amounts to over 15 million singles sales.

Jump to the full Top 40 , or stick with us as we look over her Top 10, and, yes, we’re doing it in reverse order…

10. Beautiful Stranger (1999)

Outselling seven of Madonna’s chart-toppers is this William Orbit-produced slice of kitsch perfection, from the movie Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.

Possibly the greatest Number 1 that never was for Madge, Beautiful Stranger had strong first-week sales of over 135,000 copies, but could not compete with S Club 7’s debut – Bring It All Back beat her to it, and denied Beautiful Stranger a place in chart history.

SALES: 535,000

CHART FACT: This was the ninth time Madonna had seen a single stall at Number 2 – she’s had 12 runners-up in total.

MADGE FACT: Madonna has only performed this song on tour once, during the Drowned World Tour in 2001.

> See Beautiful Stranger's entire chart run

9. Frozen (1998)

Now that’s what you call a comeback. After a few years off having her first baby Lourdes and making Evita – which won her a Golden Globe – Madonna returned with a new attitude and an album full of trance bangers and trippy beats.

Lead single Frozen was the perfect introduction and kicked off her work with William Orbit, who’d go on to collaborate with her on two further albums.

SALES: 556,000

CHART FACT: Frozen was Madonna’s first Number 1 in eight years – she hadn’t enjoyed a chart-topper since Vogue in 1990.

MADGE FACT: Madonna didn't really go brunette in the video for Frozen; it was a wig. The video was filmed in bright sunshine in the Californian desert, with the 1998 equivalent of about a million Instagram filters over the top to make it look colder.

> Track Frozen's chart progress

8. True Blue (1986)

In many ways, Madonna’s most overlooked Number 1, True Blue came right bang in the middle of the star’s ‘imperial phase’. Written for and about her then-husband Sean Penn, True Blue is very much the unloved stepchild of Madonna’s back catalogue - she rarely performs it on tour.

It didn’t put off anybody buying it, though. While it was Number 1 for just a week, True Blue has outsold some of her more famous Number 1s, including poor old Vogue, which just misses the Top 10.

SALES: 557,000

CHART FACT: True Blue was knocked off Number 1 by EastEnders’ star Nick Berry’s anthem Every Loser Wins. I guess he was proven right that week at least.

> Take a look at the True Blue album's incredible 66-week first run in the Top 40

7. Like A Prayer (1989)

Madonna’s show-stopper and an instant classic, Like A Prayer was the centre of huge controversy upon release – all in a day’s work for Madge, really. A video featuring burning crosses and a violent murder was always going to grab some attention, and thanks to a well-known soft drinks firm pulling the plug on an advertising campaign featuring the song, its notoriety took it all the way to Number 1.

Also, Madonna hair fans, this was the first time she had led a new album campaign as a brunette. She’d do it only once more, on American Life in 2003.

SALES:  614,00

CHART FACT: Like A Prayer spent three weeks at Number 1 before being toppled by the Bangles’ Eternal Flame.

MADGE FACT: The saint who Madonna snogs in the church is widely, and mistakenly, believed to be based on Jesus. That's not true. He's actually supposed to be St. Martin de Porres, the patron saint of those seeking interracial harmony, which makes perfect sense when you watch the video.

> Did you know three versions of Like A Prayer have charted? Check them out

6. Hung Up (2005)

When you start to count up Madonna’s comebacks and reinventions, you run out of fingers pretty quickly. Following what you might call a lukewarm reception to previous album American Life, Madonna decided it was time to crank up the disco beats and fill dance floors up and down the country, which she did with Hung Up, the lead from Confessions On A Dance Floor.

Featuring a mega-famous sample of Abba’s Gimme Gimme Gimme, Hung Up gave Madonna her biggest global hit in years, showed there was plenty of time for us all to get fit enough to buy a leotard and, more importantly, put Madge back at Number 1 where she belonged.

SALES: 626,000

CHART FACT: Hung Up was Madonna’s first Number 1 to spend more than a week at the top since Vogue in 1990.

MADGE FACT: Madonna had a nasty fall from her horse not long before the video was shot and broke her arm and some ribs. She said when she was dancing her arm felt like it was "flapping like a chicken wing". Hung Up's video had a kind of sequel, with the Sorry video picking up where Hung Up left off. Madonna hadn't done this since 1995, when You'll See carried on the story of the Take A Bow video.

> Don't hesitate… look up Hung Up's chart run

Top 5! Are you ready? I’m waaaaaiting…

5. Papa Don’t Preach (1986)

Madonna’s first Number 1 from her classic True Blue album was one of her first major brushes with controversy. Papa Don’t Preach, which told the story of a pregnant teenage girl, angered both anti-abortion and pro-choice campaigners, but political wrangling aside, it was a brilliant pop song.

Madonna’s second Number 1, it ruled the Official Singles Chart for three weeks of summer 1986.

SALES: 651,000

CHART FACT: Papa Don’t Preach ended Wham’s reign at the top with Edge Of Heaven. It was eventually dispatched by Chris de Burgh’s romantic slow-dance classic The Lady In Red.

MADGE FACT: Madonna resurrected her famous 'Italians Do It Better' T-shirt on her 2004 Re-Invention Tour, sometimes switching out the nationality depending on where she was.

> Track Papa Don't Preach's chart run

4. Holiday (1984, 1985, 1990)

The tune where it all began, which was so popular, she released it three times. Landing at Number 6 in winter 1984 and scoring Madonna her first Top 10, the song went on to bigger success the following year. Released in summer, which makes much more sense when you think about it – it’s about taking some time off, after all – Holiday zoomed to Number 2.

Madge obviously thought she might as well have another crack at Number 1 with Holiday, and so in 1991 released it again – as Madonna’s greatest hits mania was in full swing with the release of The Immaculate Collection. This time, it reached Number 5, but three entries in the Top 10 for the same song isn’t bad at all, really.

SALES: 718,000

CHART FACT: So who kept Holiday off the top? Well, it was the lady herself! One week in 1985, Holiday sat at Number 2 right behind Into The Groove at the top of the Official Singles Chart.

MADGE FACT: In the rarely seen official video for Holiday – that we imagine Madonna would probably rather pretend never happened – Madge's brother Christopher can be seen dancing on the left. They'd later have a huge falling out when Christopher wrote a tell-all book, but she's confirmed they're speaking again now.

> Nosey at every single chart hit called Holiday

3. Crazy For You (1985, 1991)

Madonna’s most successful ballad is officially this track that never actually appeared on any of her studio albums. Taken from the frankly dodgy movie Vision Quest – which would later be renamed Crazy For You for reasons we’re sure aren’t that hard to work out – Crazy For You saw Madge slow things down in the middle of the Madonna mania of the mid-eighties and reach Number 2.

Crazy For You was another of her old tunes that got a chance to chart again, coming out again in 1991 and, remarkably, hitting Number 2 once more.

SALES: 782,000

CHART FACT: On its first run, Crazy For You was kept off Number 1 by Sister Sledge’s Frankie. On its return to Number 2 in 1991, it was kept at bay by two records.

The Simpsons’ Do The Bartman (!) held it off first of all, then a rerelease of The Clash’s Should I Stay Or Should I Go leapfrogged over her to take the top spot.

MADGE FACT: Gambler was featured in Vision Quest too.

> Look up Crazy For You in our chart archive

2. Like A Virgin (1984)

This is the one where everything changed for Madonna and she began to resemble the unstoppable force that would dominate pop in the Eighties. The Nile Rodgers-produced track didn’t just kick off the campaign for Madonna’s second album of the same name, Like A Virgin was also the first of an incredible run of 36 consecutive Top 10 entries. No star has bettered that yet.

Also incredible is that Madonna’s second biggest selling single wasn’t even a Number 1 – a question commonly incorrectly guessed in pub quizzes – it reached Number 3.

SALES: 832,000

CHART FACT: Like A Virgin was the 18th bestselling single of 1984.

MADGE FACT: Nile Rodgers, who produced the Like A Virgin album, has said that he was hoping to work with Madonna throughout her career, but his girlfriend didn't get on with actor Sean Penn, who ended up being the first Mr Madonna.

> Check out Madonna's rivals for the top spot

1. Into The Groove (1985)

It’s only right that the song that should rule them all is Her Madgesty’s very first Number 1, the song that started off a run of 13 Number 1 singles, more than any other female artist in British chart history.

Soundtracking Madonna’s big-screen debut in Desperately Seeking Susan, Into The Groove was a huge hit over summer 1985. Despite not having a proper video and thanks in part to not being available on Madonna’s Like A Virgin album – until a reissue solved that problem later on – Into The Groove stormed to the top of the Official Singles Chart and refused to budge for a month.

While Into The Groove may not hold the same affection for many as Holiday or Crazy For You still do, it still pretty much sums up Madonna’s whole ethos. “Only when I’m dancing can I feel this free,” she sings, barely pausing for breath, and she hasn’t stopped busting a move since.

An anthem fit for a queen, Into The Groove takes the throne – it’s her biggest selling song, and you can’t argue with that.

SALES: 878,000. Yep, that’s right, it’s not a million-seller. Madonna is one of the most successful acts of all time to still not nab a million-selling single.

CHART FACTS: Into The Groove is tied with Vogue and 4 Minutes for her longest stint at Number 1 – four weeks. It knocked Eurythmics’ There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart) off the top. It was eventually toppled by UB40 and Chrissie Hynde with their cover of I Got You Babe.

Into The Groove also managed to keep Madonna herself off Number 1 – the rerelease of Holiday sat right behind it from 11–17 August 1985. Coincidentally, that was the week of Madonna’s 27th birthday.

> See the full Top 100 from that week

MADGE FACT: Into The Groove would later feature in a jeans commercial, with a guest appearance from Missy Elliott and with refreshed lyrics. Missy would later team up with Madonna, Britney and Christina on  that MTV VMAs performance in 2003.

Other notable entries

Madonna’s 1990 Number 1 Vogue just misses a Top 10 placing, landing at Number 11 with over 530,000 sales.

Her most recent chart-topper 4 Minutes FT Justin Timberlake is just behind it at 12, with 507,000 copies sold.

Material Girl, a Number 3 hit in 1985 thanks to one of her most iconic videos, has to settle for 16th, with over 385,000 sales.

Justify My Love, which was pretty saucy back in the day, and launched Madonna's first greatest hits album The Immaculate Collection, comes in 23rd with 275,500 sales. The Immaculate Collection is one of the biggest-selling albums of all time.

Fan-favourite Gambler, which Madonna doesn’t seem to be that fond of and can be very hard to track down, finishes 25th, with a sales tally of 270,000. Its sandwiched between two of Madonna’s hugely overlooked hits Dress You Up and Angel, which both reached Number 5 despite having no video! The power of Madonna in 1985 – if you'd have been able to bottle it, you'd have ruled the world.

Madonna’s collaboration with Britney Spears, Me Against The Music, scrapes into the Top 40 at Number 39, but if you’re a Madonna purist and want to know which Madge solo effort Me Against The Music has pushed into 41st place? Well, it’s bad news for Erotica. That lands just outside.

Madonna’s biggest selling single not to go Top 10? That honour belongs to Lucky Star – a Number 14 hit in 1984 and finishing 42nd on her countdown.

This article is actually quite old! 6 years old already!

As 2023 Madonna is celebrating 40 years from her first album and also 65 anniversary in August!

Isn't it time for us to get an update on Madonna best selling songs in UK? Especailly since with streams this certainly changed a lot. Plus she already have 5 singles that passed 1 million chart sales units!

So many singles have been digitally available since! Including "Gambler" that despite being lost is now finally available on iTunes and streaming platforms. I'm pretty sure it did sold something more since it's digital release.

Probably there are some changes and probably you could also do a TOP 65 instead a TOP 40 this time around? So many TOP 10's information missing!

Unfortunally pure sales recently are low and even vinyl releases despite good are quite low addition compared to streaming equivalent numbers (I know "Erotica" 2022 vinyl released added at least 10k units to that single physical sales but most streaming numbers are way bigger than that).

Loved that Madonna song that was called Ghosttown. I'm surprised that didn't make the cut. She needs to make an album with that great sound that's in that song. It just gets into your soul.

This Used To Be My Playground is bought an cassingle (lol), this IS the worst Madonna single EVER. BTW I hated Keep It Together, however the remix...loved it!

I have it in CD-single - it's good.

avatar

Anna Nekrylova

BTW, I highly doubt INTO THE GROOVE is her best selling. If it is than why does it have only Gold certification by BPI? While according to BPI only Hung Up has sold more than 600k in the UK. Who's right? INTO THE GROOVE, LIKE A VIRGIN, CRAZY FOR YOU, HOLIDAY, PAPA DON'T PREACH - are their sales inflated or Madonna just wasn't given BPIs right?

Personally I think all her 00s singles are 10 times better than her 80s. Don't Tell Me and upper all have at least Silver certification by BPI. I was shocked to find "Express Yourself" doesn't have it yet. OMG! EXPRESS YOURSELF - it's so humiliating not to have even a Silver from it((( THE POWER OF GOOD-BYE - why, God? It's better than "Frozen", and it was Grammy-nominated (100%) GIVE IT 2 ME - the same! Only it's better than "4 Minutes". Was also Grammy-nominated (maybe) THIS USED TO BE MY PLAYGROUND - was also Golden Globe-nominated.

RAIN - the best video in the 90s and the most beautiful song from Erotica album! So Karen Carpenter-vibe)

So, these songs are her greatest loosers. If someone wants to fight for freedom and join the revolution they can go and buy THESE records above. #39 ME AGAINST THE MUSIC (WITH BRITNEY SPEARS) - you can save money. It's like bees against honey meaning rock against drugs. I have no idea how much did BMG paid Madge. Please, tell! And that kiss at VMA, too. I bet Madonna regrets her "giving her power through kiss" to Britney. Just kidding.

Article was written before that tour happened. They update the sales figures every year, but just repost the same text.

Then they should update the text too. Lazy journalism.

More.. your top 40 countdown has Holiday and Crazy For You re-releases as 1990. No. Was 1991.

take a bow was #1 for 9 weeks in the top 40 DONT UNDERSTAND??

avatar

Spencer Quintanilha

In the US. Take a Bow peaked at #16 in the UK

Is 'Rebel Heart' not Madonna's 14th Studio album? I would consider 'Im Breathless' a studio album. Its certainly not a soundtrack album, and all the songs on it are studio recordings, and it did contain 'Vogue' after all?????

"I'm Breathless" was specifically recorded to tie in with Tracy. It wasn't Madonna making an album just to make an album, which is what would be considered a studio album. It's much more a piece of marketing that also conveniently worked as a place to park "Vogue", which was not recorded for the project but was originally going to be the B side to "Keep it Together".

tks Brian. we'll agree to disagree lol. i suppose its whatever side of the fence your sitting on. tks for the reply.

Agreed. I'm Breathless was a studio album. All unique songs. Three of them may have made a soundtrack, but all recorded to make a new album.

avatar

It's still a complete Madonna album. I mean let's take Whitney Houston's marketing Bodyguard Soundtrack. In this case it's counted as a complete Whitney Album, though, not all songs are sung by her. But I'm Breathless is quite a different story, it's all Madonna.

avatar

Ricky Manwife Greaves

I would agree but It's a soundtrack so not considered a studio album I also think You Can Dance and Something to Remember should be classed as greatest hits!

avatar

Michael51202800

I know Madonna said in an old interview that I'm Breathless is a Madonna Album, because there is a real Tracy Soundtrack. I don't know why other albums don't count! The average joe sees Madonna-Who's that Girl, You Can Dance, I'm Breatless, Immaculate Collection, GHV2, Evita, Something To Remember, Remixed and Revisted, Celebration, etc... I'm assuming she recorded them in a studio. It's an Album to me! If Whitney Gets Bodyguard, Madonna gets her extras....

I respect European markets... But, this list proves why AMERICA is the best market in music imo... This list is terrible imo... VOGUE is a masterpiece. Why is a MASTERPIECE sitting at number 11. WTF???

But in the UK hung up became #1 and in the US just #7...

my thoughts

Yeah, The UK is better, Madonna has 63 top 10 singles there

Because it sold less copies. Until very recently the UK Chart was based solely on sales, radio has never been a component.

"Hung Up" was #01 on Billboard Download Chart for 2 weeks and 13 weeks #01 on Billboard Single Sales Chart but the song was not getting any airplay.

In UK charts were based only on sales (now have streaming too) but in US they always had airplay too. "Hung Up" didn't have any airplay at first but radios saw the song sitting for 2 weeks on all Single Sales and Download charts and played it a few times - eventually peaking #42 on US airplay.

After "American Life" Madonna was banned by US radios ("American Life" was #01 in single sales in US but peaked #68 on airplay - that's why Hot 100 peak is #37). She did peak TOP 20 on US airplay charts twice later with "4 Minutes" (because of Justin Timberlake) and "Give Me All Your Luvin" (the week of release due to Superbowl the song was played almost every hour during the 4 days before the game as she was performing and singing it).

avatar

aidan morris

i took me forever to realize this is a UK thing and not american since like a virgin was her first number 1 hit

avatar

Like A Virgin was #1 for 6 weeks... but True Blue was not. Who wrote this?

avatar

This is about the UK chart. It's written by the official UK charts company.

avatar

Patrick Cremeans

This isn't about the US. READ you idiot.

Take A Bow, anyone?? WTF?

Take A Bow was only a moderate hit worldwide and peaked at #16 in the UK, ending her streak of 34 consecutive top 10s.

yeah i was scratching my head too.

avatar

Take a Bow is wonderful of course. The first time I heard it I was shocked by its beauty.

I think Like a Prayer will make it. I voted for another Song of personal reasons.

Still shocks me. That and Ghosttown. How did this happen.

And me! Very strange Ghosttown didn't chart at all?!

avatar

It did if you use the good old sales chart rather than this streaming nonsense they came up with from 2014 on. From the last album, Living for Love made #17 (http://www.officialcharts.com/charts/singles-sales-chart/20150301/7509/) and Ghosttown made #65 (http://www.officialcharts.com/charts/singles-sales-chart/20150322/7509/). It actually had two runs, coming in at #65, leaving the top #100, then climbing slowly back up again to a second peak of #70. Maybe if she'd promoted it, it would have done even better. No sign of BIM, but I may have missed it as I have to look at each individual chart, as they don't list them on her page.

Moderate Hit? 7 weeks at number 1 in the US! More than any other M single

Ghost town tanked, because it wasn't her first single..... Livin for Love, just didn't match the video, her vocals are too old lady, talking proper! No intro, i think Livin for love is awesome. Just like celebration: I don't recognize you with your clothes on! Plus radio stations don't want to support her because of The American Life ! A shame I think Madonna still has her 'A "game, but radio will only play Holiday, Vogue and Express Yourself. Sorry for bashing Living for Love and Celebration, but I've edit them without the voice tracks. Just like Bobby Brown he was popular with small rap, but time has passed and radio stations have edit his rap out.... Stick with vocals! It only works for Vogue!

Ghost Town was one of the best vocals ever! She really showed no support for the song. She really only seemed into Livin' for Love and I'm Madonna!

US Chart history means zero in an article about her UK Chart history. TAB was her biggest UK flop since her initial few singles. It ended her unbroken run of 34 top ten hits. Back then music wasn't a worldwide homogeneous market. Billboard was very much into R&B and hip hop, whilst the UK had a much more diverse chart heavily into dance and electronica. Bedtime Story hit no.3, TAB no.16. In the US BS was ignored, and TAB was no.1 for weeks.

She used "Livin' for Love" to promote the album but she did sing more songs in US and Italy when doing her first promo tour.

"Ghosttown" she did once live at iHeart Radio in US when the single was released. " I'm Madonna" she did at Jimmy Fallon but can't remember her promoting that song more when was released as single (the album did returned to US iTunes at #19 when she went to the show).

She did no promo in UK - she only did the Brit Awards... crazy! If she did more promo for her album releases she would sell more. This is not the 80's and 90's. She needs to do TV Shows and sing live.

Moderate hit WORLDWIDE because it peaked #16 in UK and was not very different around the world. Peaked just #17 on European Hot 100, #15 in Australia and #09 in New Zealand.

The only countries where "Take a Bow" peaked #01 were US, Canada and Poland (so 3 countries worldwide - not that much). Only peaked TOP 3 in another 2 countries as was #02 in Italy and #03 in Finland and in most countries missed the TOP 10 or even TOP 20 (peaked just at #25 in France and #34 in Netherlands).

"Secret" was a much bigger worlwide hit peaking #01 in Canada, Finland and Switzerland, #02 in France and Poland, #03 in US and Italy - In UK and Australia peaked #05. Was #04 in European Hot 100.

But "Secret" even being a much bigger hit than "Take a Bow" was still not one of Madonna TOP 40 best selling singles in UK.

Here you can see how different the music tastes and music markets from UK and US are (and rest of Europe it's even more different as UK it's the European music market most similar to US).

avatar

Billboard wasn't "into R&B and hip hop", it reflected radio airplay and sales at the time.

Obviously. Since Billboard isn't in fact a sentient being. I used 'Billboard' as short-handed for US taste.

It wasn't the first single in France and Italy and didn't tank there. Madonna did sang Ghosttown at San Remo festival in Italy to promote it. If only she had promoted the song on UK TV as well I'm sure it would have been at least a TOP 40 Hit.

LONDON, ENGLAND - OCTOBER 14: (Exclusive Coverage) Madonna performs during opening night of The Celebration Tour at The O2 Arena on October 14, 2023 in London, England. (Photo by Kevin Mazur/WireImage for Live Nation)

Four songs into Madonna ’s long-awaited Celebration Tour and a technical hitch gives her a chance to chat for a little longer than was probably planned.

She tells the crowd of her early days being “hungry, broke and scared” in New York, with a lack of support from her father, who wanted her to come back home.

“But I was not about to go back,” she declares. “Because I am not a quitter!”

Popular on Variety

But not Madonna. After postponing the scheduled first leg, the tour finds itself starting – a mere 20 minutes late – at London’s O2 Arena, the very venue where, in 2015, she famously fell down the stairs after a cape malfunction at the BRIT Awards.

Those of us who were close enough to hear the thud as she hit the floor like a pole-axed prize fighter that night were amazed when she simply got back to her feet and got on with the show. And tonight, she metaphorically climbs off the canvas of that hospital stay to reclaim her pop heavyweight crown, a metaphor helpfully supported by the elaborate boxing set-up utilized during the lead-up to the show’s second act.

There are few signs that Madonna was fazed by the fraught run-up, let alone the lengthy “reset” required after her punky rip through “Burning Up.” She may sigh, “This is exactly what you don’t want to happen on your opening night,” but she simply gets her hype man Bob the Drag Queen up to tell jokes, while reminiscing about the days when she would trade “blowjobs for showers” in ‘80s NYC.

And for once, Madonna – whose relentless commitment to the present and future of her music had always previously prevented her from playing the fantasy setlist her catalog seemed to be crying out for – is here to celebrate her four decades at the top with almost every song a fan – whether casual or obsessive – could dream of.

Furthermore, tonight she lays claim not just to her own history, but also to her influence on music and the wider world over the last 40 years. Not for nothing did the set start with “Nothing Really Matters” and its refrain of, “It all comes back to me”.

There are nods to her activism – including a passionate plea for peace between Israel and Palestine and tributes to those we have lost to AIDS – and her trailblazing, via a montage of negative news headlines and video footage from across her career. It’s a timely reminder that, in an age where anyone with a million streams that gets a new haircut can be hailed as “iconic,” Madonna really has achieved that status, over and over.

There are snippets of other people’s music throughout – a snatch of Sam Smith’s “Unholy” here or Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy” there, plus a surprisingly poignant acoustic cover of Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive”. Some of her children make on-stage cameos, and even her ex-husbands appear briefly on screen. There are tributes to Sinead O’Connor and, more controversially, Michael Jackson, via a dubious mash-up of “Billie Jean” with “Like a Virgin”.

But mostly, it’s about Madonna and her songs. Taylor Swift has undoubtedly crystalized the concept of musical ‘eras’ in the public consciousness, but Madonna is no slouch when it comes to giving each phase of her career a distinct look and sound.

And tonight, she flits seamlessly between different stages of her life, sometimes via a costume change, sometimes by climbing into an illuminated portal that sees her fly over the crowd on her way to another time and place.

From the joyous early ‘80s dance-pop of “Get Into the Groove” and “Holiday”; to big ballads such as “Live to Tell” and “Bad Girl”; to the raunch of “Erotica” (in which Madge gets to saucily, um, interact with her younger self via a lookalike in the iconic “Blonde Ambition” get-up) and “Justify My Love”; to the sheer, irresistible pizazz of “Vogue,” “Don’t Tell Me,” “La Isla Bonita,” “Ray of Light,” “Hung Up,” “Like a Prayer” and so many others; this show is proof that there is no such thing as too much Madonna.

True, the lack of a live band occasionally makes things lack a little punch (most notably on a glitchy “Die Another Day”). But overall, tonight shows that while – just like 40 years ago – Madonna still doesn’t know how to quit, boy has she learned how to come back.

But thankfully, she did and, by the end, all the different iterations of Madonna from across the decades are on stage, the lookalikes hugging each other with delight during “Bitch, I’m Madonna,” while the real deal stays center stage and supremely focused.

Still dancing, still singing, still the one and only Madonna.

“Welcome to the party, bitches,” Madonna previously announced for her global Celebration Tour . Initially set for July 2023, Madonna had to postpone the Celebration Tour in June after getting hospitalized due to a bacterial infection. “My first thought when I woke up in the hospital was my children,” Madonna shared in a statement online in July. “My second thought was that I did not want to disappoint anyone who bought tickets for my tour. I also didn’t want to let down the people who worked tirelessly with me over the last few months to create my show. I hate to disappoint anyone.”

During her first week of the Celebration Tour at a stop in Antwerp, Belgium, Madonna took a minute to address her recent hospitalization. “Less than four months ago, I was in a hospital and I was unconscious, and people were thinking, predicting that I might not make it,” Madonna told fans at Belgium’s Sportpaleis Arena. “So, it’s a fucking miracle that I’m here right now. My mother, God bless her, she must be watching over me — she said, ‘Girl, it’s not your time to go.'”

Madonna also recently spoke about the “near-death experience” during her Los Angeles concert in March, even addressing her doctor who was in the audience and the first words she said after getting out of her coma .

“It’s called a near-death experience, and I’m not kidding, it was pretty scary,” Madonna said. “Obviously, I didn’t know for four days because I was in an induced coma, but when I woke up, the first word I said was, ‘No.’ Anyway, that’s what my assistant tells me.”

The icon later told the audience, including this writer, at the Forum, “I’m pretty sure that God was saying to me, ‘You want to come with? You want to come with us, wanna go this way?’ And I said, ‘No!'”

“The oppression of the LGBTQ+ is not only unacceptable and inhumane; it’s creating an unsafe environment; it makes America a dangerous place for our most vulnerable citizens, especially trans women of color,” Madonna shared in a statement on Instagram. “Also, these so-called laws to protect our children are unfounded and pathetic. Anyone with half a brain knows not to fuck with a drag queen. Bob and I will see you from the stage in Nashville where we will celebrate the beauty that is the queer community.”

With dates scheduled throughout April 2024, Madonna will continue to travel all across the United States for the Celebration Tour , including stops in Los Angeles, Palm Springs, and Austin.

Madonna Celebration Tour Set List

Madonna’s tour features some of the legend’s most iconic songs and moments throughout her career.

“Madonna, I dare you to do a world tour and play your greatest motherfuckin’ hits,” Amy Schumer dared the singer in the tour announcement clip , which included appearances from Judd Apatow, Jack Black, Lil Wayne, Diplo, Kate Berlant, Larry Owens, Meg Stalter, Eric Andre, and Bob The Drag Queen, who will support Madonna on the road.

“Four decades … as in, 40 years” Madonna replies. “As in, all those songs?”

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer performs tracks from the opener “Nothing Really Matters” to “La Isla Bonita,” which she also sang with Schumer in the tour announcement clip.

At a recent stop at the Kia Forum in L.A., Madonna’s set list also included “Holiday” from her self-titled debut to the disco anthem “Hung Up” from 2005’s Confessions on a Dance Floor to the title track from 1998’s Ray of Light — there’s no shortage of Madonna’s greatest songs to choose from.

Madonna tells fans it is 'a miracle that I’m alive' at Celebration tour concert

madonna best selling tour

NEW YORK – “No one is more surprised that I have made it this far than me. I didn’t think I was gonna make it this summer, but … here I am.”

With that address after the first three songs of her Celebration Tour, Madonna bridged 40 years of pop stardom with one very frightening health incident in June, a blunt assessment of both her atypical longevity and the fragility of her – or anyone’s − future.

A week after concluding a 27-show outing through Europe with her career-spanning production, Madonna , 65, reactivated her elaborate tour Wednesday at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, the first of three sold-out shows at the venue as part of her North American sprint through April.

Neither age nor consideration will sway Madonna’s stubborn fixation with taking the stage at a time when most concertgoers are preparing for work the next morning – 10:50 on this night. Plenty of fans who have experienced her aversion to punctuality on previous tours have vowed to stay away, but forgiveness is quick among Madonna devotees, a colorful crowd dotted with feather boas, sequins and corsets who packed the venue to the rafters.

Though Madonna has never been one for nostalgia and cozy reminiscing, she is also shrewd enough to note the popularity of her younger peers unspooling their musical stories (so far) with stadium blowouts.

If anyone deserves a bow in the spotlight, it’s the undisputed Queen of Pop. She bulldozed every adversity after moving to New York from Detroit at 19, circumvented her vocal limitations with crafty originality and hustle, developed into an ace businesswoman and musical tastemaker, and remains an inspiration for many.

Madonna doesn’t need to be out there, wonky left knee sheathed in a sleeve , teetering atop chairs and skipping through a glistening “Open Your Heart” with her nimble posse of dancers or gliding over the crowd in a Plexiglas box to sing, quite robustly, the lovely “Live to Tell.”

But tell her she can’t do something and she’d likely reference her 2015 hit, played near the end of this two-hour-plus spectacle: “Bitch, I’m Madonna.”

Madonna Celebration Tour: See the setlist for her iconic career-spanning show

Madonna turns reflective: ‘I feel like I’m one of the lucky ones’

This Celebration Tour was almost anything but triumphant after Madonna spent several days in the ICU this summer because of a severe bacterial infection, which prompted the postponement of her North American dates until now.

Her elation at being back on stage was unmistakable not only through her comments −“You have no idea the enthusiasm, the joy, coming out of my pores,” she said before strapping on a guitar to play “I Love New York” for the first time this tour – but through her movements.

An onstage camera captured refreshingly real shots of her cavorting with her team during “Holiday” (with a bit of Chic’s “I Want Your Love” nestled into the groove) and her “Vogue” routine of judging her stylishly clad dancers – including daughter Estere − as they sashayed down the lighted stage runway was a goofy giggle-fest.

One of the most poignant moments in a show packed with visuals including a spinning circular stage − tiered to evoke memories of the wedding cake from her iconic 1984 MTV VMAs performance – unique video scrolls that rolled open in various spots around the arena and pyramids of lasers, came with Madonna and a guitar.

Shortly after engaging in the thumbs-hooked-through-belt-loops dance routine for the stuttering country-pop of “Don’t Tell Me,” Madonna again chatted with fans.

“It’s a miracle that I’m alive,” she said. “I feel like I’m one of the lucky ones. … Let’s take a moment to be grateful.”

With that, she asked the crowd to turn on their phone lights and dived into a deliberate rendition of Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive,” her voice unaccompanied save for the song’s basic guitar chords.

It was simple, yet stirring, and it made for an unconventional segue into “La Isla Bonita” – with son David Banda on guitar – which, weirdly, worked.

Madonna is still selling sex, but does it have the same effect?

Madonna has always used sex to not only titillate, but also to needle her critics. Even four decades into a career, she isn’t going to limit the raunch factor in her shows.

It’s debatable whether the simulated masturbation on a red velvet bed with a “Vogue”-era doppelganger – staged between the hypnotic chug of “Erotica” and “Justify My Love” – was provocative or a shrug-inducing callback to her 1990 Blond Ambition tour, when those salacious simulations almost got her arrested.

In her red-and-black negligee and knee-high black boots, Madonna cut a seductive figure. But watching her get devoured in a sea of writhing bodies and pet and kiss her topless male and female dancers before a tone-shifting “Hung Up” wasn’t nearly as stimulating as her artful lighted-carousel presentation of “Like a Prayer,” another classic creation of agitation in its time (1989) that now feels subdued.

Madonna has traversed so many musical styles, birthed so many trends whether via fashion, song or attitude, and shattered more glass ceilings that nothing short of a six-hour show coupled with a documentary would fully illuminate the archives of her career.

But The Celebration Tour is an effective commemoration of a woman who has fulfilled every accomplishment yet still possesses a scrappy drive.

“It’s important to never forget where you came from,” Madonna said from the stage. “Always remember the struggle.”

You have to respect Madonna’s idea of a nostalgia trip.

Standing onstage before an adoring audience of thousands Monday night at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, the pop icon flashed back 40-something years to the evening in the early 1980s when she debuted her song “Burning Up” for a smaller and more hostile crowd at New York’s legendary CBGB.

“People were screaming at me, ‘Show us your tits!’” she recalled. “And at the time, I didn’t have any tits because I wasn’t eating.” She laughed. “Being broke and homeless and friendless and jobless and foodless and anorexic — it was not a vibe.”

Monday’s concert was the first of five at the Forum on Madonna’s Celebration Tour — a career-spanning road show meant to “tell you the story of my life,” as she put it not long into the two-hour-and-15-minute performance. In the age of Taylor Swift’s world-conquering Eras Tour, that retrospective framing can seem like the obvious choice for a musician with a catalog as deep as Madonna’s.

Yet the 65-year-old singer has always resisted a play-the-hits approach in favor of showcasing her latest work (as in the intimate theater dates she did in 2019 and 2020 behind her most recent studio album, “ Madame X ”). So it made sense that she felt a bit of explanation was in order.

“I hope you can handle it,” she told her fans, “’cause just imagine: I had to live it.”

Only a churl would deny Madonna the right to a victory lap, so monumental is her standing in pop history — not just as a maker of indelible songs and genre-defining videos but also as a cultural pathbreaker whose commitment to feminist and queer ideals continues to open lanes in the mainstream even now.

“You can all thank me for allowing you to have the courage to come out,” she said Monday, which is certainly one way to describe the work of ally-ship that’s long distinguished her career.

For a tour called Celebration, though, this show — with more than two dozen of Madonna’s songs divided into seven acts — was curiously short on joy; again and again, she brought the crowd’s attention to the indignities as opposed to the victories of her ascent, as in the CBGB anecdote or in a little skit before “Holiday” in which she acted out being turned away by a doorman at the Paradise Garage.

Late in the night, she spoke for a few minutes about the “near-death experience” she suffered last summer that forced her to postpone the tour’s launch and left her nearly unable to walk from her house to her backyard.

“I know that sounds insane, but it was difficult then,” she said. “I didn’t know when I could get up again and when I could be myself again and when I would have my energy back.”

That she was telling us this from a stage — and with her trusted doctor in the house, she pointed out — was, of course, its own triumph. Yet Madonna’s performance rarely tapped into the sense of abandon you’d hope would accompany such a win. The result was easy to admire but not always easy to love.

Overly moody arrangements of once-ebullient hits like “Hung Up,” “Ray of Light” and “Like a Prayer” didn’t help; nor did the baffling decision to forgo all-timers such as “Music,” “Borderline,” “Secret” and “Lucky Star” to make room for the likes of Madonna’s forgettable Bond theme, “Die Another Day.” “Like a Virgin” was part of the show but only as a prerecorded mash-up with Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” that played as digital silhouettes of the two superstars were projected onto a screen. (As costume-change distractions went, it beat the vaguely pagan fire ritual undertaken by several of her dancers.)

Could you say that the life story Madonna promised to tell cohered Monday with any discernible logic? Not in a show that inexplicably jammed together the pugnacious “Human Nature” and the yearning “Crazy for You.” That’s not a problem, per se: A pop concert is a theater of personality and craft, not one of plot or character development. But a narrative this messy needed more razzle-dazzle.

Madonna being Madonna, she couldn’t help but dole out some during a few moments at the Forum. “Vogue” was a high point that had her dancers (including one of the singer’s daughters) competing in a rowdy ballroom tableau judged by Madonna and comedian Eric André. “Live to Tell” was a moving tribute to people who’d died of AIDS complications; “Take a Bow” was another gorgeous ballad, with Madonna’s strongest vocal of the night.

And then there was her surprising acoustic rendition of “Express Yourself,” for which she tweaked the song’s familiar intro — “Come on girls, do you believe in love?” — to include “boys,” “theys” and “thems.” On record, “Express Yourself” is a battering ram of industrial-funk encouragement; it exhorts the listener to create his or her own destiny. Here, as Madonna sang and strummed a guitar, the song seemed to acknowledge the cost of that process while urging us on all the same.

“Rehearsals began over a year ago with almost a 2 month break waiting for me recover from a near death experience,” she continued, referring to the shows she had to postpone due to her severe bacterial infection and subsequent hospitalization last year. “They never stopped practicing… they never stopped cheering me on and supporting me … They were also going to school and rehearsing every night. !! . am so very proud of all of them.”

Madonna is also mom to daughter Lourdes Leon, whom she shares with ex-boyfriend Carlos Leon, and son Rocco Ritchie, whom she shares with ex-husband Guy Ritchie. She and the director went on to adopt David shortly after the “Material Girl” singer founded her charity organization Raising Malawi in 2006. Later, she adopted Mercy, then Stella and Estere — all three of whom are also from Malawi — as a single mother.

The new post comes one day after Madonna opened up about touring with her kids in an interview with W Magazine . “When I go on tour, nothing brings me more happiness to know, we are all working on the same show creating the magic together,” she told the publication. “It would be boring if they were just traveling from hotel to hotel, and occasionally coming to watch the show.”

“Of course, I am also their mother so sometimes we get on each other’s nerves,” she added. “We are a family of artists but are also a family and that’s what happens.”

Madonna Joined by Salma Hayek for ‘Vogue' in Mexico City as Celebration Tour Wraps

Salma Hayek helped Madonna bring her career-spanning Celebration Tour to a close in Mexico City, where the actress appeared on the Queen of Pop's stage during her performance of "Vogue" at the Palacio De Los Deportes Friday night (April 26).

The number had Hayek, dressed in an ensemble inspired by Frida Kahlo, joining in to guest judge the tour dancers' vogueing. (Hayek portrayed the iconic painter in the 2002 biopic Frida , for which she received an Oscar nomination for best actress.)

Hayek reacted to her experience with Madonna on Instagram in a post on Saturday, writing, "Thank you so much @madonna for letting me be a part of your iconic celebration tour. This unforgettable night goes in my bag of precious treasures."

Madonna has just one show left on her current itinerary, a free concert on May 4 at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, that Visit Rio officials said is forecast to bring in two million fans. Entrance to the show, sponsored by Itaú Bank, is on a first-come, first-served basis on the day of the event. Fans who can't attend will be able to watch the show broadcast live on TV Globo.

Mexico City hosted Madonna for a series of five concerts at the Palacio De Los Deportes. Last weekend, on Saturday, April 20, the singer spoke of her love of Mexican culture and Kahlo, telling the audience how she discovered the painter's art as a young girl.

"As you know, I have a great history, a long history with Mexico," said Madonna, who reportedly met with the Kahlo family at their home in the city neighborhood of El Pedregal.

"When I was a girl," she said, "I discovered Frida Kahlo. I went to the only museum that existed in Detroit, and there were Diego Rivera murals everywhere, but to be honest, I was more interested in a small picture in a corner, of a beautiful woman with her hair gathered in braids and intense eyes."

The Celebration Tour kicked off in the fall, after a delayed start due to Madonna's hospitalization for a serious bacterial infection over the summer.

Madonna's four decade-long career-spanning world tour, The Celebration Tour , is nearly at its conclusion . After opening last October following months of delay, the tour finally wrapped its planned list of shows last week.

The 65-year-old played Mexico City on April 26, bringing out celebrity guest Salma Hayek for the concert's voguing segment ( dressed in a Frida Kahlo-inspired outfit ), and shared a new social media post looking back on her expansive tour and legacy as an artist.

The last show of the tour ended in Mexico City in the most magical way," she wrote. "Frida Kahlo came to visit and made me the happiest girl in the world!"

"Not only was my show complete in Mexico – but my entire artistic career!!" Madonna penned. "For she has always been my eternal muse cheering me on through the good times and the bad."

She shared a word of gratitude for Salma and her fans, adding: "Thank You @salmahayek for making it possible. And Thank You to my fans, not only in Mexico but all over the world. We did it together!! 80 shows! I feel Love."

Approximately 8.6 million drivers are nabbed for speeding each year, with Infiniti drivers being the ... [+] most likely to get caught exceeding the limit.

Back in the 1960’s and early 1970’s, auto enthusiasts were enamored by a breed of otherwise unassuming family cars that were packed with the largest engines that could fit under their average-size hoods for the sake of lightning-quick straight-line acceleration. Unfortunately, the so-called muscle car era would be suddenly sidelined by a knockout combination punch of sky-high insurance rates and both rising gas prices and shortages (and the ensuing fuel economy standards) resulting from the 1973 oil crisis.

Pundits opined that might mark the end of high-performance cars as we knew them – indeed the Chevrolet Corvette would have to soldier on for a time with fewer than 200 horsepower – but the industry soon evolved and brought speed back into the vehicular equation. Thanks to turbocharging, direct fuel-injection and other engine technologies, today’s cars, trucks and SUVs are quicker than ever, with some full-electric models able to approach and even break the 1,000-horsepower barrier, and do so with instant and continuous torque.

One might conclude that the most outrageously powered hypercars would be the ones most frequently cited for exceeding posted speed limits among the approximately 8.6 million drivers nabbed for speeding each year. However, a study conducted by the insurance website Insurify.com determined that’s not at all the case.

Rather, Insurify’s study of over 4.6 million car insurance applications found that European and Asian brands are most likely to be pulled over for speeding. Models from otherwise sedate luxury automaker Infiniti are the most frequently cited, with 8.7% of its drivers receiving speeding tickets.

The least frequently cited brands include Cadillac with 5.4% of drivers nailed for speeding, Tesla at only 5% and safety-minded Volvo with just 2.7% of its motorists caught exceeding the limit. The national average among all brands is 7.1%.

Your Best Look Yet At The New iPhone 16

Hundreds of russian troops gathered out in the open they didn t know the ukrainians had aimed four atacms rockets at them, the richest person in every state 2024.

Of note, the models most often nabbed among the most-ticketed brands listed below are in fact on the sportier side, but are hardly among the most fleet-footed in production. In Infiniti’s case it’s the Nissan Z-based G37 coupe being the most ticketed model in its otherwise conservative fleet, with 10.7% of its drivers being cited for exceeding the speed limit. On the other hand, the fast and furious Audi SQ5 SUV was found to be that brand’s best-behaved model with regard to speed-limit violations, with just 1.5% of drivers ticketed.

Of note, despite their traditional affinity for acceleration, none of the domestic brands, nor any of the exotic European sports car makers made Insurify’s most-frequently-ticketed list.

Of course, not only can speeding violations cost cited motorists as much as $600 or more depending on the jurisdiction and/or the number of miles over the limit, they’ll also boost one’s car insurance rates by hundreds or even a several thousand dollars annually, and exact legal fees and missed work days for court appearances for the most serious violations. Collecting multiple tickets can lead to even more serious penalties, including suspension of one’s driver’s license.

Madonna finally speaks out on ‘near-death’ experience after being in induced coma

Madonna finally speaks out on ‘near-death’ experience after being in induced coma

The pop icon took to instagram to share the emotional post.

Rhiannon Ingle

Madonna has spoken out on her 'near-death' experience after being put in an induced coma.

The 65-year-old 'Holiday' singer , who has been treating fans to her critically-acclaimed Celebration Tour , left people terrified last June after her management team revealed she'd been admitted to the intensive care unit following a serious bacterial infection .

Fears over the singer's health only intensified after reports emerged that Madonna had been induced into a coma , after she was said to have been found unresponsive in her New York City apartment.

Madonna was able to get back to her home in the Big Apple about a week later, and a few days after that, she shared a statement to thank those who had sent her 'positive energy, prayers and words of healing and encouragement'.

She was scheduled to kick off her 40th anniversary Celebration Tour , all about 'highlighting her unmatched catalog of music from the past 40-plus years', last July but had to postpone it to start in October instead.

Since then, the pop icon has opened up about the traumatic ordeal and shared a sweet message to her entourage.

She took to Instagram yesterday (25 April) to share an update with her 19.3 million followers.

She posted a series of sweet snaps of herself and her team including musicians and dancers who see referred to as her ' children '.

Madonna captioned the photo dump: "On the day before our 80th show of the Celebration Tour I need to acknowledge my incredibly talented children who carried me through this Journey each of them bringing their own unique talent to the stage."

She explained that rehearsals began 'over a year ago' with almost a two-month break waiting for the singer to 'recover from a near-death experience'.

"They never stopped practicing… they never stopped cheering me on and supporting me," Madonna continued. "Their enthusiasm kept me Going!!!

"They were also going to school and rehearsing every night. !! . am so very proud of all of them."

The Grammy award-winning hit-maker continued: "I think what my children learned the most this year of rehearsing and performing is that if you want to follow your dreams, you have to work hard for them.

"And if all of them choose something different later in life, they will never forget this year of blood, sweat, and tears. Nor will I."

She aptly signed off the heartfelt post adding: "It’s a CELEBRATION!"

Earlier this year, Madonna delved into further detail about her time spent in a coma , even going as far as revealing what her first word was when she awoke.

"This show every night is not really so hard on me physically. It’s hard on me emotionally because I’m really telling you the story of my life," she gushed.

"My heart is on my sleeve. I’ve fallen off a lot of horses and broken a lot of bones… but nothing can stop me."

After her assistant revealed that her first word was 'No!', Madonna went on: "I’m pretty sure that was God saying to me, 'Do you want to come? Want to come up with me?'"
