14 Best Things to do in Montego Bay, Jamaica

' src=

Jamaica is a Caribbean Island off the coast of Honduras, close to Haiti and Cuba. It’s a popular tourist destination, and (amongst many other things) it’s famous for Rastafarian culture, being the birthplace of Bob Marley, and giving the world jerk chicken!

The island offers a combination of nature, sand, and sea. Montego Bay is one of the island’s main coastal resort destinations and Jamaica’s second largest city. It’s a hub for tourists of all walks of life.

The city’s surrounding beaches, lively nightclubs, and nearby nature spots make it the perfect base for your time in Jamaica. You’re going to love the rum bars, laid-back atmosphere, and uplifting music.

Explore old plantations or marvel at the marine wildlife on snorkeling expeditions are just some of the things to do in Montego Bay. Or escape into the jungle canopy where stunning rivers and waterfalls weave themselves effortlessly into the landscape.

14. Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville

Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville

Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville is best described as a destination with a bit of everything. It’s essentially a water park, restaurant, and nightclub all in one!

Their margaritas are notoriously delicious — you can’t leave Montego Bay without having at least one (or two). Their sunset patio has spectacular views of the sun setting over the sea, and once the sun goes down the dancehall and reggae tunes begin!

Their 120 foot water slide runs off the side of the venue and throws you into the air before you come crashing into the sea, it’s extra thrilling a few margaritas in!

13. Ras Natango Gallery and Garden

Ras Natango Gallery and Garden

The Ras Natango Gallery and Garden is a unique spot where you can combine a stroll through nature and a visit to art exhibitions. Most of the masterpieces are Ras Natango’s — this incredible self-taught artist runs the gardens and galleries.

Quaint and colorful, the gallery and gardens are nestled in the hills overlooking Montego Bay. They are a botanical haven of local flora and birds. You can catch a glimpse of up to 18 of Jamaica’s 28 endemic birds here!

This tropical retreat is the perfect place to come if you’re seeking a little solitude and respite.

12. Sam Sharpe Square

Sam Sharpe Square

Come and catch a glimpse of Jamaica in the 1800s in this little square at the heart of downtown Montego Bay. It was named after the anti-slavery activist Sam Sharpe who is considered a Jamaican National Hero.

In 1831, on Christmas day, a mass protest led by Sharpe broke out. The city’s slaves refused to work. This was a huge act of rebellion, which lead to the Kensington Estate Great House being set alight and simultaneously began the slave rebellion in Jamaica.

The monument in the center of the square explores the struggles he faced as a humanitarian activist. History aside, it’s also a bustling area of the city; there are lots of vendors!

Make sure you visit the Montego Bay Museum and The Cage whilst you’re there too.

11. Rocklands Bird Sanctuary

Rocklands Bird Sanctuary

Birdwatchers gather, we’ve got something special in store for you! This little bird sanctuary is home to some of the island’s finest bird species, and they aren’t afraid to get up close.

Habituated to humans, the birds are extremely friendly and some will even come and land on you! You’ll be given a bottle of sweetened water you can feed them with to give them an extra incentive to approach you. The vibrant hummingbirds will be the avian highlight of your trip.

The story of how the sanctuary began is as humbling as your time here will be. The house’s old owner, an enthusiastic nature lover, used to walk through the hills feeding the birds. They got used to her and started following her home. She’s passed away now, but her legacy lives on at the Rocklands Bird Sanctuary.

10. YS Falls

YS Falls

YS Falls has a mix of activities suited to adventure and relaxation seekers alike. The main attraction is the collection of falls that cascade from pool to pool, forming a tier of beautiful waterfalls.

Cool off under the gushing falls or soak in the natural spring pool. Pack a book and a picnic for the day and spend some time relaxing in the YS Falls tropical gardens after.

If you’re looking for a little more adventure, head into the canopy and try out the thrilling canopy rides!

9. Mystic Mountain

Mystic Mountain

Mystic Mountain is a popular attraction for families. It’s just an hour and a half drive away from Montego Bay, so you won’t have to travel far before you get to this tropical theme park.

The adventure begins right away. As soon as you arrive you’ll hop on the Sky Explorer chairlift that soars into the air and takes you up the mountain to the main attractions. Along the way there are great views of the Ocho Rios town below your feet!

Add all the tours to your trip, so you can zipline through the canopy and ride on the bobsled themed rollercoaster once you get to the top. There is also a pool with a waterslide, a restaurant, and gift shop!

8. Greenwood Great House

Greenwood Great House

This grand house and its little estate offers a little glimpse into Jamaica’s past. The home of colonial settlers, the property was built in the late 1700s by Elizabeth Barrett-Browning’s cousin, Richard Barrett. The family were amongst the first settlers in Jamaica.

On your tour of the property you’ll listen to the phonograph in the old ballroom and get a feel of what a Jamaican Victorian-era property looked like when you belonged to the island’s elite. The Greenwood Great House also boasts the island’s largest musical instrument collection and plantation books library.

The house was one of the few to survive the slave rebellion of Christmas 1831 undamaged, so it allows you the unique chance to see period furnishings and features.

7. Mayfield Falls

Mayfield Falls

These breathtaking tiered falls in the hills are surrounded by greenery and wildlife. It’s the perfect setting for a rejuvenating day on the doorstep of Montego Bay!

Just over an hour away from Montego Bay, the drive there is as a part of the experience too, you’ll wind through thick jungle-like vegetation that will get you excited for what’s ahead!

Next embark on the scenic river walk to get to the falls. Once you’re there, cool down in the various pools and soak up the natural beauty of Mayfield Falls.

You can hike around the falls if you get restless, or come with a guide and explore the underwater caves and have a giggle in the natural (though cold) jacuzzis, like the Washing Machine.

6. Croydon Plantation

Croydon Plantation

This exotic coffee and pineapple plantation is located at the foot of the Catadupa Mountains near Montego Bay — the views are second to none!

You’ll get to see the trees of various nuts, like cashews and macadamia (google a cashew tree, the nut’s original appearance is bound to surprise you!) and sample delicious tropical fruits, like sugar cane, jackfruit, and of course the plantation’s trademark pineapples!

Take a tour and learn about the plantation’s history, taste an authentic Jamaican lunch, and find out all about how they produce their aromatic coffee and sweet honey.

5. Jungle Ziplining

Jungle Ziplining

The most iconic zipline adventures near Montego Bay are at the Montpelier Jungle Outpost. The property was once a sugar plantation. It’s a short hike to the estate, past the stunning Montpelier waterfall and the Great River.

Their jungle ziplines lead you up into the trees and winding through the canopy. You’ll start to get butterflies in your tummy as you pick up speed and the adrenaline rushes through your body!

You can also go kayaking and river tubing from the Montpelier Jungle Outpost, so it’s the perfect place to come if you want a full day of adventure! Families will especially love it here.

4. Dunns River Falls

Dunns River Falls

The Dunns River Falls look like a scene out of a kids fairy-tale book. The river trickles over smooth copper rocks and fills the natural pools at the foot of the falls.

The cool river water cascades 1,000 feet down the rock and there’s a pristine natural pool at the bottom. It’s not too deep, so it’s a great swimming spot for families with little kids.

If you want to venture further upstream, you can walk up the waterfall on the step-like rocks and explore the surrounding landscape! Dunns River Falls are about an hour and a half drive away from Montego Bay.

3. Rose Hall Great House

Rose Hall Great House

Rose Hall is grand and elegant, though it has a somewhat cottage-like exterior (but it’s considerably bigger than a cottage!). Built back in 1780, the Great House was one of the larger sugar plantation mansions on the island.

It was owned by Annie Palmer, also known as the White Witch. She’s rumored to have been a master of witchcraft and voodoo and is thought to have murdered various husbands and lovers.

She was later murdered by Takoo, one of the plantation’s slaves. Even today it’s thought the house is still haunted by her…

They run day tours and evening tours in candlelight. It’ll be a day of mystery, dark magic, and history combined!

2. Doctor’s Cave Beach

Doctor's Cave Beach

Come and spend a lazy day on this quintessentially tropical beach! The glistening turquoise waters and bright white sand entice locals and visitors from near and far.

Tall palm trees line the beach and hide the hotels and restaurants just behind their canopy. Curiously, the beach was once privately owned by Doctor Alexander James McCatty, hence its peculiar name.

It’s a hotspot for snorkeling as there are coral reefs just off shore that attract the most vibrant and tropical marine life. You can try out lots of different watersports at Doctor’s Cave Beach too!

1. Bamboo Rafting Martha Brae

Bamboo Rafting Martha Brae

The Martha Brae river was supposedly named after an Arawak witch who was allegedly forced to tell Spanish settlers where a secret stash of gold lay along the river. However, using her sorcery she changed the course of the river and concealed the gold forever.

Hop on a bamboo raft and let the river sweep you away. The trip is serene, silent, and tranquil. As you slowly cruise down the river you’ll mostly pass through rainforest. There are a few little villages and towns along the way too.

The Martha Brae river is just 40 minutes away from Montego Bay! This unique and stunning adventure should be at the top of your holiday itinerary.

Best Time to Visit Montego Bay

Montego Bay sees by far the most visitors in July, August and December when the weather is hot and there is very little rain. Outside of these busy months are much quieter and cheaper with the dry season of January to April being the best time to visit.

At the start of ‘winter’, holidaymakers start to pour in for Christmas and New Year’s, relaxing in its resorts and sunbathing on their stunning sands. Prices are at their highest though with its restaurants, bars and beaches all packed.

Up to April, the city sees temperatures average 29 to 30°C (84 to 86°F) with the humidity also lower than later in the year. These months are ideal for touring about the isle or catamaran cruises along its scenic coast. The Jazz and Blues Festival and carnival celebrations are also going on then.

May through November is much calmer and less crowded as this is the hurricane season in the Caribbean. The bad weather can make visiting its resorts much less pleasant.

As July and August are much drier and people have summer holidays, many visit then. The days are sunny and warm with exciting events like the Reggae SumFest taking place. Many Americans also visit in November around Thanksgiving.

Montego Bay is one of the top tourist destinations in Jamaica if not the entire Caribbean, welcoming visitors arriving by air via Sangster International Airport and sea from the multitude of cruise ships docked at the enormous cruise port downtown. The capital of St. James Parish, Montego Bay was founded in the 16th century by Spanish colonizers and today is home to scores of swanky resorts aiming to cater to every available budget. When visitors aren't relaxing on MoBay's beaches, there are countless options for fun and entertainment.

Get Outdoors on a Guided Tour

Island Routes

If you're gunning for more activities during your trip to Montego Bay, Island Routes offers a variety of half-day and full-day outdoor adventures like catamaran and snorkeling cruises, zip lining and river tubing day trips, deep sea sport fishing excursions, and dolphin encounters. You can also sign up for Jamaican cooking classes, horseback riding, ATV rides, and Blue Mountain bicycle tours. Other popular day trips, like bamboo river rafting on the Martha Brae River, nighttime swims at Luminous Lagoon, and eco-adventure tours of Good Hope Estate are also available.

For a memorable only-in-Jamaica kind of experience, try one of the Drive Your Own Adventure tours in Montego Bay or nearby Negril (about a 90-minute drive down the West Coast), which let you cruise around town in your own Mini Cooper as you explore some of the area's top sights and attractions at your own pace.

Do a Day Trip to Dunn's River Falls

narvikk / Getty Images

Located about 90-minutes away near Ocho Rios, Dunn's River Falls makes a great day trip, whether you decide to rent a car and explore more of the island or embark on a guided tour from Montego Bay. Besides enjoying panoramic views of the falls, you can also make the 960-foot climb up them, have a picnic in the gardens, and shop for souvenirs at the local craft market.

The beautiful terraced waterfall complex is also close to Nine Mile, the birthplace of Bob Marley. Stop by to learn more about his fascinating life at the museum (tours are given by local Rastafarian guides), or pay your respects at his final resting place.

Swim in the Healing Waters of Doctor's Cave Beach

In the 1920s, a British osteopath claimed that the turquoise waters of Doctor's Cave Beach had curative properties. Practically overnight, the cove transformed into one of Jamaica's most popular beaches. It's still one of the island's most popular beaches , though it can get overcrowded when cruise ships are docked in Montego Bay. Its proximity to downtown, just steps away from the hip Gloucester Avenue, and cerulean waters keep it a favorite spot of sand all year long.

Be aware that since Doctor's Cave Beach is a private beach, travelers do have to pay to use it. That said, your admission goes toward maintaining the onsite bathrooms, restaurants, and snorkel equipment rental facilities. With crystal clear water and tropical fish swimming about, you'll definitely want to snorkel here.

Hand Feed Birds and Get Ecological

Just the name of this Montego Bay bird sanctuary sounds relaxing. The Ahhh...Ras Natango Gallery and Garden houses all kinds of local birds and tropical plants, all while offering cliffside views overlooking the bay. This little slice of Eden is a great escape from the hordes of beach tourists and cruise passengers who are less likely to make it up to the gardens. It's about a 15-minute drive from the city center, though you can opt to include round-trip transportation from Montego Bay with your ticket.

Apart from the sheer beauty of the park, one of the highlights here is being able to hand feed the local wildlife, such as hummingbirds and lizards. Everything at the park is used intentionally, reused when possible, and the owners make it a point to teach visitors about sustainability. In addition to the flora and fauna, there's a gift shop featuring crafts made by local artists.

Enjoy an Eco-Adventure at Good Hope Estate

Visit Jamaica

Tour company Chukka Caribbean Adventures has converted the grounds of the historic Good Hope Estate, founded in 1774, into a playground for thrill-seekers while at the same time, preserving the stately home for tours.

Several packages and passes are available, with most including a combination of house tours, rum tastings, a chance to swim in the estate's pool as well as other adventure activities like zip-lining, ATV tours, river tubing, or taking on the challenge course. Carriage rides are also available for those not so thrill-inclined, making Good Hope Estate a fun and relaxing day trip that's worth the 45-minute drive from Montego Bay to Falmouth.

Tour Cockpit Country

Not far from Good Hope Estate, Cockpit Country is Jamaica's wildest outback, a land of steep hills and deep valleys that once helped escaped slaves known as Maroons elude and outlast their former masters for centuries. Today, it's one of Jamaica's top ecotourism destinations, and where you can also visit several still-thriving Maroon communities .

Popular activities in this part of the island include hiking, biking, kayaking, and caving. Check with local tour companies like Island Routes and Chukka to see which half- and full-day Cockpit Country tours you can do from Montego Bay.

Take a Nighttime Cruise to Luminous Lagoon

To experience Jamaica's bioluminescent bay—the only natural nighttime attraction on the island—head to the Glistening Waters Hotel before sunset to catch a nightly tour of Luminous Lagoon.

Tour boats leave from the hotel and cruise into a quiet corner of the lagoon inhabited by microscopic sea creatures that light up in response to movement. It's cool enough to see the effect when the boat moves through the water, but the real thrills happen when you jump in and see the glowing swirls and eddies created when you move your hands and feet. Meanwhile, your always-entertaining boat captain and guide are there to explain the science behind the display and share interesting stories about Jamaican life and culture.

Sample Some Jerk Cuisine

Spicy Jamaican jerk cuisine is world-famous, and Montego Bay is home to two of the best purveyors on the planet: Scotchie's and The Pork Pit. Scotchie's is a quirky roadside stand along Highway A1 (Falmouth Road) that serves jerk chicken, pork, and fish with sides of yam, breadfruit, rice and peas, and festivals (Jamaican dumplings). The backyard flavor of the place is enhanced with an open bar, where you can order Red Stripes and rum drinks to sip from on chairs made of old beer kegs.

Back in Montego Bay, check out The Pork Pit on Gloucester Avenue. As with Scotchie's, the jerk food here is cooked over big open fires fed with pimento wood with a dry rub for flavor, not sauce. You'll find the perfect balance here, as it's popular among locals, not overrun with tourists, and not too far of a walk from the rest of the action downtown.

Shop, Sip, and Snack in Downtown MoBay

Ritcharnd Moskow / Wikimedia Commons

This Caribbean port of call offers duty-free shopping as well as the boozy temptations of the "Hip Strip," the downtown nightlife zone that's home to the Montego Bay Margaritaville outpost and its famous water slide, among other popular dance clubs.

For a classic Jamaican-style lunch, grab a cold Red Stripe and a crusty "pattie" filled with beef, chicken, vegetables, or cheese at one of Montego Bay's many restaurants. While Juici Patties and Tastee Patties are great chains that offer these dishes, many locals swear by Stanley's . Take a few Jamaican patties to go and head to Doctor's Cave Beach (mentioned above) for a seaside snack.

Go on a Haunted Tour of Rose Hall Great House

While tours of Rose Hall Great House are available during the day and at night , evening tours are best in order to set the mood for creepy tales about this haunted 1770 plantation house and its legendary dark past. Stop by the onsite pub, located in the estate's former dungeon, where slaves were once held as they awaited punishment by the cruel plantation owner's wife, Annee Palmer, known island-wide as the White Witch of Rose Hall.

Rose Hall is open for tours daily, while haunted nighttime tours of the estate happen Friday through Sunday evenings. For a go-big-or-go-home approach, consider the Annee's Escape package, which includes a guided tour of Rose Hall, championship golf at one or both of its courses, a shopping experience, Jamaican-style lunch, and special access to a private beach and pool. You can also tour the nearby Cinnamon Hill Great House , where Johnny Cash and his wife, June Carter Cash, once lived.

Climb Aboard the Big Bamboo With Martha Brae River Rafting

For a romantic excursion, grab your beloved and float down the Martha Brae River on a bamboo raft. Tours with Jamaica Rafting include round-trip transfers from your hotel, a 75-minute guided trip down the river, a complimentary fruit drink upon arrival, and a visit to Miss Martha's Herb Garden.

Tours begin about 20 miles from Montego Bay in the Rafter's Village, a six-acre recreational facility complete with a souvenir shop, bar, lounge, restrooms, a picnic area, and a swimming pool. The three-mile journey down the Martha Brae River passes through thick jungles, skirts quiet Jamaican towns, and includes a stop where you can purchase handicrafts from local artisans.

Admire Jamaican Art at the Montego Bay Cultural Centre

The Montego Bay Cultural Centre is the fine-arts capital of western Jamaica and houses a gallery and museum containing paintings, sculptures, and other works of art celebrating the island's rich cultural heritage and artistic traditions.

Opened in 2014 in historic Sam Sharpe Square in the heart of the Montego Bay Craft Market, you'll find exhibits featuring ancient Jamaican arts and crafts as well as rotating displays on such topics as Rastafarian culture. It's open daily and makes a great rainy day activity or a nice break from the beach if you've soaked up just a little too much sun.

Savor the Flavor of an Appleton Estate Rum Tour

While Jamaica and Barbados continue to compete for the title of rum capital of the Caribbean, in Jamaica, the clear rum champ is Appleton Estate, producer of fine mixing rums and sublime sippers. You'll have to take a two-hour journey down back roads from Montego Bay to reach it, but once you're there, you'll be able to tour the distillery and sample a variety of rums. The 21-year is pricey but smooth and you can always sleep off your buzz on the ride back to your hotel.

Renovated and reopened in 2018, the Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience includes complimentary welcome cocktails, a 75 to 90-minute guided tasting led by local rum experts, a movie about the rum industry in an on-site cinema, and an interactive tour through the Estate itself. Appleton Estate is open Thursday to Saturday. Reserve your tour in advance to avoid disappointment as these are quite popular.

Montego Bay , commonly referred to as MoBay, is the second largest city in the island nation Jamaica . It has a population of 428,000 people (2018). Montego Bay is the capital of St. James Parish, one of the 14 parishes of Jamaica.

Understand [ edit ]

Christopher Columbus sailed into the bay in 1494 and named it "El Golfo de Buen Tiempo" or Fair Weather Bay. The first record of a Spanish settlement here shows it as Monterias. The Spaniards hunted the herds of wild hogs that used to roam the hills and produced and exported 'hog butter' or lard. The name Montego derives from the Spanish "manteca" meaning lard, and Montego Bay is shown on some ancient maps as Lard Bay, or Bahia de Manteca in Spanish.

Due in part to its location on the island's north shore, Montego Bay has long since earned the title of 'tourist capital of Jamaica.' It receives the bulk of international flights, and is home to Sangster International Airport, the larger of Jamaica's two main international airports. It is a tourist destination known for its duty-free shopping, cruise line terminal, and the sheltered Doctor's Cave beach with clear turquoise waters, which is one of the most famous beaches on the island.

Montego Freeport , built in the 1960s on what was called the Bogue Islands, is the port of Montego Bay. The Montego Freeport terminal consists of five primary berths two of which are dedicated exclusively for cruise shipping. There is a telecommunications centre for cruise passengers (and crew), snack and refreshment stand.

Transportation is available from the terminal building, supervised by the Jamaica Tourist Board, which also maintains a visitor information booth. Montego Freeport is about 3 km south of town. Taxis to downtown MoBay cost about US$10. Shuttle bus service from the cruise ship pier to downtown City Centre Shopping Mall for US$2 per person each way.

Get around [ edit ]

By foot [ edit ]

Gloucester Avenue-which is lined with tourist hotels, shops, and restaurants-has sidewalks on both sides and is best visited on foot. Aside from this road, walking may be considerably less safe.

By bus, taxi [ edit ]

Buses, minibuses and route taxis arrive and depart from the transportation station off Barnett St at the south end of St James St. There’s an inspector’s office (7AM-6PM) inside the gate where you can ask for the departure point of the bus you’re seeking.

Montego Bay Metro (952-5500; 19A Union St) is the municipal bus service (around J$100). Montego Bay Metro now operates three routes: Greenwood to City Centre; Sandy Bay to City Centre; and Cambridge to City Centre.

Taxis are readily available, but as with all cities be aware that some drivers will be less honest or reliable than others. follow your instincts; never get into an unmarked car with someone who offers you a ride, and stick with taxi services you recognize. Your hotel can suggest trustworthy drivers. Reliable driver (as used by the Bird's Nest and Five Gable include Frankly (local ☏ +1 876 581 5712 ) and Smith (local ☏ +1 786 787 7889 )

Dunn's River Falls

One of Jamaica's most famous natural features, Dunn's River Falls tumble down 180 meters of smooth limestone terraces into the sea.

The falls lie about a 90-minute drive from Montego Bay, near Ocho Rios. They are a popular day trip, and you can combine a visit here with a tour of Nine Mile, the birthplace of legendary reggae musician Bob Marley.

The Jamaica Combo Tour: Dunn's River Falls and Bob Marley's Nine Mile tour packs plenty of fun into one full day. The tour begins with an informative guided visit to Nine Mile, where you can learn about Bob Marley's life as you wander through the village. After a traditional Jamaican lunch, hike to the top of Dunn's River Falls and cool off in its terraced pools. If you want to pack even more attractions into your day, you can add an optional night boat ride on the Luminous Lagoon .

Rose Hall Great House

Overlooking the ocean, about 20 minutes from Montego Bay, Rose Hall Great House is a restored plantation home built in 1770 . According to legend, Annie Palmer (the White Witch of Rose Hall) ruled here with cruelty and possessed black magic powers that would eventually seal her husband's grim fate.

Today, her home is decorated with furniture from the period, and you can step back in time on a guided tour of the house .

If you're looking to up the excitement factor, the spine-chilling candlelit night tour is one of the most unique things to do in Montego Bay for couples who don't mind a creepy trip. Some claim to have seen the ghost of the White Witch drifting through the Great House.

Address: Rose Hall Hwy, Rose Hall Estate, Rose Hall, Montego Bay

Doctor's Cave Beach

At Doctor's Cave Beach and Bathing Club , white sands fringe clear, calm waters that some believe are fed by mineral springs.

In the early 1920s, a famous British osteopath declared that the water had curative powers after swimming here — a claim that helped shape the future of Montego Bay by luring visitors from around the world. Hotels sprung up along the beach, and the area became a tourist hot spot.

Today, the beach is as popular as ever, and it's often crowded with cruise ship passengers, despite the admission charge. This is also a popular place for families and couples to go snorkeling in Montego Bay.

Amenities at the beach include changerooms, restaurants, and gift shops, and you can also rent beach equipment.

If you prefer to have less people sharing your Montego Bay beach experience, Cornwall Beach is right next door and also offers decent snorkeling and picture-perfect white sand and blue sea.

Address: Gloucester Ave, Montego Bay

YS Falls

Taking a day trip to YS Falls is one of the best things to do in Montego Bay. This natural wonderland is packed with fun things to do for families and romantic escapes for couples looking for a little R&R.

Enjoy a long soak in the natural fresh spring pools . At only four feet deep, it's easy to lounge in the main pool for hours, even if you're traveling with kids. The garden pool is a bit quieter and more secluded, a perfect place for an amorous interlude in a cabana.

The falls are the main reason people visit this beautiful point of interest. Seven tiers of cascades welcome visitors to bask in their tranquil beauty.

Hang from a rope swing , whoosh 40 feet above the falls on a zipline, or wander along the well-maintained paths through the jungle. You won't be at a loss for fun things to do at this exciting attraction. When hunger strikes, visit the on-site restaurant for a tasty bite.

On the YS Falls and Black River Safari Guided Tour , you can enjoy the refreshing cascades at the falls and enjoy a relaxing ride on a pontoon boat down the Black River. Transportation, hotel pickup and drop-off, and lunch are all included.

Martha Brae River Rafting

Rafting the Martha Brae River is one of the most peaceful and romantic things to do in Montego Bay. It's also a relaxing way to soak up the lush scenery of Jamaica's countryside.

The trip involves drifting down five kilometers of jungle-fringed river on bamboo rafts poled by local guides. Along the way, you can learn about the local flora and fauna. Some guides also serenade you with reggae songs.

Trips leave from the Martha Brae Rafting Village, about 32 kilometers from Montego Bay. Amenities here include picnic grounds, swimming pools, restrooms, souvenir shops, a lounge area, and a medicinal garden. It's a good idea to bring your swimsuit in case you want to take a dip before or during your rafting adventure.

Sign up for the Private Martha Brae River Bamboo Rafting Tour , and a driver will pick you up at your Montego Bay hotel and take you to the launching point in an air-conditioned vehicle. Then, you'll enjoy a private float down the river aboard a 50-foot raft.

River tubing is another fun way to float Jamaica's jungle rivers. From Montego Bay, these trips usually take place on the Great River and include an exhilarating chance to shoot some rapids.

The Hip Strip: Gloucester Avenue

Also known as the "Hip Strip," Gloucester Avenue is a famous street near Doctor's Cave Beach . It's packed with shops, cafés, and entertainment venues, and most days, it heaves with cruise ship passengers.

This is a popular place for tourists to go shopping in Montego Bay — you'll find all the usual souvenirs here. If you're planning on browsing, be prepared to deal with persistent vendors.

Besides a colorful array of kitschy knickknacks and T-shirt shops, you'll also find art galleries and cafés along this bustling strip, and this is a popular stop on the Jamaica nightlife circuit.

Mayfield Falls is a beauty. While not technically in Montego Bay, the 80-minute-long journey to this Westmoreland attraction is more than worth your time.

While the falls here aren't massive, they are small, gorgeous, and easy to explore, not to mention the perfect size for splashing in and walking through or behind. Here, you can visit 21 natural pools and underwater caves.

Plus, Mayfield Falls is one of the only places where tourists can scramble up, over, and around some of Jamaica's best waterfalls , and enjoy "showering" and being massaged under the tumbling cascades.

You can make a visit here even easier by booking the Original Mayfield Falls Tour . This full-day excursion includes transport to and from Mayfield Falls, as well as entrance fees and a guided tour.

Insider's tip: Pack a towel and wear water shoes as the stones are quite slippery—they are covered in water, after all. Also, you'll want to have some cash on hand, as there's a café on-site and an opportunity to rent water shoes and a locker.

Cinnamon Hill Golf Course

Playing golf at the Cinnamon Hill Golf Course gives tourists the coveted experience of feeling the soft ocean breeze tickling their faces while putting for par. One moment, you'll be staring out at stunning Caribbean Sea views. Another, you'll be hitting your way through the trees inland. There's even a waterfall to enjoy.

This 18-hole course is located at Rose Hall. It's a par-72 designed to challenge the most avid of golfers. There are four sets of tees, so everyone from junior to senior golfers can enjoy a round or two.

The front nine are wide open, while the back nine are tighter and peppered with lush vegetation. You can see the sea from at least 17 of the holes, so bring a camera. The second tee reaches towards the historic Rose Hall Great House, and there's also an ancient aqueduct on-site.

Didn't pack clubs? No worries. You can rent them, and golf shoes, right here.

Croydon Plantation

Tucked in the foothills of the Catadupa Mountains, Croydon Plantation is a 132-acre working farm with magnificent views of the surrounding countryside.

The plantation's main crops are coffee, pineapples, plantains, and citrus, and they also produce honey. During the tour, you can learn about the different crops, sample the produce, and sip drinks made from the plantation's fresh fruit as you stroll around the beautiful grounds.

After your tour, enjoy a barbecue lunch topped off with Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee. This is a perfect spot for a couples' getaway.

Ziplining in Jamaica

Looking for an adrenaline rush? Sign up for an exhilarating ziplining experience. Flying through Jamaica's jungle canopies also gives you a unique perspective of this tropical island, and it's a fun thing to do for families with older kids.

If you want to pack even more adventure into your day, consider the Chukka Zipline, River Tubing, and ATV Safari Adventure Combo from Montego Bay . On this half-day tour, you'll ride ATVs on rugged trails through a historic estate, soar through the jungle canopy on a zipline, and navigate rapids on a Great River tubing adventure. Hotel pickup and drop-off and a traditional Jamaican lunch are included.

Rocklands Bird Sanctuary

If you're a birder, nature lover, or photography enthusiast, don't miss Rocklands Bird Sanctuary. At this delightful family-run attraction, you can view, photograph, and hand-feed exotic and endemic birds.

Upon arrival, guests are provided with a bottle of nectar, bird seed, and a comfortable place to sit. Almost instantly, hummingbirds descend to drink from the bottles and perch on your finger, and other birds flock to eat the seed.

Jamaican orioles and banaquits are some of the many species of birds you can see here, and don't forget to look for Jamaica's national bird, the regal long-tailed doctor bird.

Accessed down a rugged, twisting road, Rocklands lies about a 30-minute drive away from downtown Montego Bay. But you can make it easy by booking a Round-trip shuttle to Rockland Bird Sanctuary . They'll pick you up and drop you off directly at your hotel.

Address: Rocklands Road, Wiltshire, Jamaica

Hummingbird feeding from tropical blooms in Montego Bay

Clinging to a hillside high in the mountains, with spectacular views over Montego Bay, Ahhh... Ras Natango Gallery and Garden is an eco-tourism gem.

This outdoor gallery and botanic garden is the labor of love of the Williams family, who strive to recycle and repurpose everything on the property and love to share their garden and environmental ethics with visitors on educational tours.

Orchids, bromeliads, bougainvillea, ginger, fruit trees, and other tropical plants flourish in the terraced rock gardens, and the garden is also a haven for birds , with more than 18 species spotted on the grounds, including many hummingbirds. Art classes are also available.

Entrance includes a free shuttle from Montego Bay about 15 minutes away, and lunch is available for an extra fee. This is also a favorite spot to buy unique, locally-made artwork and souvenirs.

Address: 1 Ras Natango Way, Camrose District

Greenwood Great House | Rostasedlacek / Shutterstock.com

If you're interested in soaking up a fascinating slice of Jamaican history, head to the Greenwood Great House for a guided tour.

Nestled in the hills a few miles off the highway, it was once owned by the family of famous English poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning. The antique-filled home is more than 200 years old and is one of the best-preserved great houses in Jamaica .

Highlights of a tour include the well-maintained antique furniture; a library of rare books; and a fascinating collection of musical instruments, including a rosewood piano, barrel organ, and music box. Almost stealing the show, however, are the panoramic vistas of the surrounding countryside.

Sam Sharpe Square

The central feature of Montego Bay, Sam Sharpe Square offers a gritty slice of important Jamaican history.

It commemorates Sharpe, a slave and local Baptist deacon who advocated passive resistance to force the planters to comply with emancipation. Sharpe was hanged in what was then Charles Square. After independence, Sam Sharpe was made a National Hero, and the square was named in his honor. Today, the square is packed with street vendors and traffic, but it's a key place to visit on most sightseeing tours.

Also in the square, the Cage was built in 1806 as an overnight jail for runaway slaves, disorderly seamen, and vagrants.

Two blocks east of the square, lies Burchell Memorial Baptist Church, established in 1824, where Samuel Sharpe was a deacon. His remains are buried in the vault.

For first-time visitors to Montego Bay, the best place to stay for seeing all the sights is along the main beach area near Doctor's Cave Beach. Gloucester Avenue, the "Hip Strip," is also near here, with its art galleries, restaurants, and shops. For those seeking a little more seclusion, the stretches of beach northeast and south of town are home to most of the exclusive, upscale resorts. Here are some highly rated hotels in these areas:

Luxury Hotels:

  • Nestled in a 400-acre private estate, about 13 minutes' drive northeast of the Hip Strip, is the family-friendly Half Moon . The resort encompasses impressive recreational facilities, including a private beach, an award-winning spa, equestrian center, tennis and squash courts, a children's playground, and a golf course.
  • Catering to couples, Sandals Royal Caribbean Resort and Private Island is a romantic all-inclusive option with a British bent and a Georgian-style great house, while Secrets Wild Orchid Montego Bay presides over a peninsula south of town with more than a mile of private beach. Both of these latter resorts lie about 12 minutes by car to the "Hip Strip."

Mid-Range Hotels:

  • Less than 10 minutes from the airport, the beachfront Holiday Inn Resort Montego Bay is a great mid-range option with its all-inclusive rates, spa, volleyball courts, and sprawling outdoor swimming pools.
  • Within walking distance of Doctor's Cave Beach, Royal Decameron Montego Beach is popular for its central location, great staff, and good-value all-inclusive rates.
  • Also near Doctor's Cave Beach, SeaGarden Beach Resort is a family-run all-inclusive resort that offers great value for money, as well as an authentic Jamaican vibe.

Budget Hotels:

  • A short walk to town and Doctor's Cave Beach, about two kilometers from the airport, Toby's Resort is a value-packed budget option, with two pools, a restaurant, and free Wi-Fi.
  • Another popular value option is Deja Resort on the Hip Strip. Bright rooms, a lovely pool, and easy access to Doctor's Cave Beach are highlights.
  • Full-Day Tour : An adventurous way to explore more of the island is by booking a tour of the Blue Hole, Secret Falls, and Dunn's River Falls . Tourists are picked up from their hotels and taken to these three top attractions, with slowdowns to take photos at other popular spots (i.e. the Rose Hall Great House) along the way. At the Blue Hole, you'll hike through the jungle to Secret Falls. At Dunn's River Falls, you'll be able to trek up the falls and swim in the natural pools before enjoying a delicious lunch.

Jamaica Travel Guide

Overview of Maenporth Beach.

Montego Bay & Northwest Coast

Home to the nation’s largest airport and a busy Caribbean cruise terminal, Montego Bay is many people’s first view of Jamaica before they get whisked off to the surrounding beaches, golf courses and all-inclusive resorts. So it's ironic that, barring MoBay's excellent dining scene, most of the area’s attractions are found outside Jamaica's second city. The north coast is replete with plantation-era history, from its well-preserved plantation houses to the historic core of Falmouth. Inland, adventure beckons, from hiking and spelunking in Cockpit Country – a roadless wilderness of hidden caves and eerily silent hills that is disorientating, even to hardened locals – to rafting and zip-lining through the jungle. Filling in the gaps is a dense network of small towns and tiny villages that pulsate with the rawness and romance of everyday Jamaican life.
